Rotherham Council helps to keep more money in the local economy by increasing its local spend Rotherham Council is keeping more money in the local economy after increasing the amount of money it spends locally to more than £122 million. The Council’s Annual Social Value Report shows that local spending has risen by £77.3m, from £44.8 million in 2019/20 to £122.1 million in 2024/25, bringing greater benefit to residents, communities and the local economy. mayor tackles rural crime watch out - spiders about! doncaster road repairs South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has backed countryside communities in the county in their fightback against rural crime by providing a funding pot to help rural communities guard against crime. The South Yorkshire Rural Crime Initiative was launched earlier this year in response to the crimes and issues that blight rural communities, such as anti-social behaviour, theft, vandalism and fly-tipping. Backed with funding to the tune of £443,000 from SYMCA the initiative aims to protect rural communities and businesses, including farmers, from criminal behaviour. Among the initiatives funded was £20,000 for a mobile unit that South Yorkshire Police can deploy to support rural communities, alongside around £360,000 for Rural Crime Initiative grants. So far 115 grants have been awarded to rural residents and businesses across South Yorkshire to help them to equip their land and properties to better guard against crime. Funding has supported the purchase of equipment such as CCTV, wildlife cameras, drones, lighting, intruder alarms, trackers and property-marking kits, as well as physical security measures including gates, fencing and antipoaching barriers. The applications have been supported with advice and guidance from South Yorkshire Police officers. Kilvinder Vigurs, Deputy Mayor said: “I have been raising the profile of rural crime in order to bring it to the attention of the wider public. Our county is blessed with some beautiful rural landscapes, but this can often hide social problems that might be more visible in our urban spaces. I am pleased that the rural crime initiative launched earlier in the year has been able to help some of our rural communities. It was designed to help guard against criminal behaviour and support farmers, businesses and rural residents secure their homes, premises and livelihoods against crime and anti-social behaviour. The is an important step in helping people financially through practical measures such as CCTV,
security lighting and other crime‑prevention technologies. We are also showing we are here for all out communities in South Yorkshire” Farmer Joe Seele is one of those who has benefitted from the Rural Crime Initiative scheme. He said people routinely dump rubbish in the lanes around his land. The theft of machinery, fuel and crops plus the damage caused by off road bikes and quads directly delays harvesting and reduces yields. And that means less money to already hard-pressed farming communities. Damage to infrastructure can also affect food safety and availability. In all, the costs from the effects of rural crime in South Yorkshire runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds every year, and that doesn’t take into account the emotional cost to the victims. SYMCA, together with South Yorkshire Police, has made the financial support available to buy and install crime prevention products and materials with the aim of reducing rural crime and fear of crime, bringing offenders to justice and keeping communities safe. Police have also steppedup engagement and enforcement across the county to tackle rural crime, and linking in with local councils to tackle issues such as fly tipping and vandalism. The scourge of rural crime is often underappreciated in the wider community. Given the fact that properties affected are often isolated and remote the effects of rural crime are much less visible to the public. But its effects can reverberate beyond those immediately affected, through increased costs for security and insurance, as well as reduced investment in local economies and depopulation. It also undermines the sense of safety and trust that holds rural communities together. You can report rural and wildlife crimes by calling 101. If a crime is in action, always call 999. September marks one of the busiest periods for spider sightings in British homes, as male house spiders become more active while searching for a mate. But while homeowners might be checking windows and doors, there are other less obvious areas of the home that are easily overlooked as temperatures begin to fall. According to leading expert Rob Nezard, the start of autumn is a good opportunity to check behind radiators, around pipework and in other rarely disturbed areas, particularly as households prepare to switch their heating back on. And it isn’t just spiders homeowners may notice more of. As conditions become colder and wetter, mice, slugs and insects can also find their way into homes through gaps or seek out sheltered areas. Rob explains the autumn home mistakes worth checking now. Not checking the gaps around your radiator pipes One of the least obvious places to inspect is where heating pipes disappear through floors or walls. Small gaps can sometimes be left around pipework, particularly in older properties or where flooring and skirting have been changed. Rob says: “People automatically check their windows and doors when they think about gaps into the home, but I’d also look at where pipes pass through walls and floors. ” Never cleaning behind the radiator Behind a radiator is one of those areas many of us rarely see, let alone clean. Dust, cobwebs and debris can build up behind and underneath radiators, while the area can remain relatively undisturbed for long periods. Rob says homeowners should add it to their pre-winter clean. “Radiators need good airflow around them, so autumn is a sensible time to clear the area and make sure furniture, boxes or piles of clothes aren’t crowding them.” Pushing boxes and furniture against radiators Autumn often means summer items, fans and seasonal belongings are packed away, but avoid creating piles of storage around radiators. Not only can clutter create quiet, undisturbed spaces, it can also
interfere with heat circulating around the room. “Try to keep the area immediately around your radiator reasonably clear,” says Rob. Sealing every vent because you’re worried about draughts As energy bills rise and temperatures fall, homeowners naturally start looking for ways to stop heat escaping. But Rob warns there is an important difference between dealing with an unwanted draught and blocking ventilation designed into the property. “The rule I’d use is: deal with unwanted gaps, but don’t block intentional ventilation without understanding what it does.” Turning the heating up instead of dealing with damp A cold, damp-feeling room can make people instinctively reach for the thermostat. However, repeatedly increasing the temperature isn’t a substitute for working out why a room has excessive condensation or damp. Moisture can also make parts of the home more hospitable to some insects and slugs, potentially creating another reason for spiders to stick around if prey is available. Overheating the house and then opening the windows Another surprisingly common autumn habit is turning the heating up, becoming too warm and then opening a window to compensate. During spider season, open windows and doors can provide another route into the property. Rob says: “Try lowering the thermostat or adjusting the radiator rather than overheating the space in the first place.” Assuming your warm radiator is attracting spiders Finally, seeing a spider beside a radiator doesn’t necessarily mean it has been attracted there by the heat. Spider activity naturally becomes more noticeable at this time of year, particularly as males move around searching for females. Rob says: “Use switching the heating back on as your reminder. Clean behind the radiators, clear clutter, look for obvious gaps around visible pipework and check for signs of excessive moisture.”
An extensive programme of road improvements is now underway in Doncaster, with City of Doncaster Council investing heavily in highways repairs and maintenance over the next four years. This has been made possible through a combination of increased funding from the Government and additional council funding allocated by Mayor Ros Jones as part of her Capital Budget in February, a total of £60 million has been set aside to bring these ambitious plans to fruition. This is a record commitment for the City of Doncaster that effectively doubles the annual spend that would normally be allocated to its road maintenance. This investment enables the council to take a more proactive approach to improving Doncaster’s highway network, with works that will ensure local roads are safer, more durable and generally in better condition. Some of these treatments are already in progress, with 46 miles of road having been resurfaced since April alone. Once the first year of the investment has concluded, it is expected that council teams will have resurfaced around 80 miles of road and completed 48 resurfacing schemes (roughly four times as many as they would in a typical year). This would mean that 8% of Doncaster’s entire road network will have received improvements
in the span of just twelve months, with the aspiration being for this to reach at least 30% by the time the four-year programme has finished. Speaking about this investment, Councillor Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment and Housing, said: “Keeping everyone moving safely around Doncaster is a top priority for the council. By investing £60 million into highways maintenance over the next four years, we are taking a more proactive approach that will yield great benefits for the people of our city. Focussing on longterm improvements, as opposed to reactive repairs, this programme of works will improve the lasting condition and safety of our road network, reduce the need for unplanned disruptions in the future, and ultimately deliver better value for residents.” The £60 million investment complements wider efforts to improve local roads. Earlier in the year, the council also introduced new measures to strengthen its pothole repairs. Among other things, teams updated their repair specifications, started making use of more effective materials, and began employing the latest techniques to address issues earlier and more effectively.
Plans to make Sheffield’s neighbourhood streets safer, more accessible and easier to use for people of all ages and abilities are set to move forward through a new trial of innovative crossing improvements. A report going to Sheffield City Council’s Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee recommends progress of the Improving Neighbourhood Junctions trial, which aims to help people walk and wheel around their communities more safely, confidently and independently. The project will introduce a package of improvements at selected locations, including side road zebra crossings, upgraded dropped kerbs, tactile paving and other accessibility measures designed to make crossing side roads easier and safer. The trial forms part of Sheffield’s commitment to creating neighbourhoods where everyone can get around comfortably and access schools, shops, parks, public transport. Research from trials elsewhere in the UK suggests that side road zebra crossings can significantly increase the likelihood of drivers giving way to people crossing, helping to improve safety and confidence for pedestrians. The scheme is expected to particularly benefit children, older people, disabled people and families. As well as delivering practical improvements, the trial will provide valuable evidence to help shape the future of street design and accessibility improvements. The project is being funded through the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), with
monitoring, evaluation and awareness-raising activities also supporting the trial. Before any crossings are installed, further feasibility work, research and community engagement will take place to help shape the final designs and ensure they meet local needs. If approved, preparatory work will begin ahead of a proposed installation programme in summer 2027. The project supports the ambitions set out in Sheffield’s Transport Vision and the council’s commitment to creating a pedestrian-friendly city, while encouraging more people to choose walking and wheeling for everyday journeys. It is guided by South Yorkshire’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy - a region wide plan led by SYMCA to build safer neighbourhoods, strengthen community engagement, and create connected routes to opportunities. Jefferson Nwokeoma of Sheffield City Council said: “Everyone should be able to move around their neighbourhood safely and confidently, regardless of their age or ability. These improvements have the potential to make a real difference to everyday journeys by creating streets that are more welcoming, accessible and easier to use. Whether it’s walking to school, reaching the bus stop, visiting local shops or simply getting around independently, we want Sheffield’s streets to work better for everyone. This trial will help us understand how these improvements can support safer and more inclusive neighbourhoods across the city.”

COMMUNITY RALLIES TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR MUCH-LOVED CINEMA
The BBC is reporting that nearly 4,000 people have signed a petition to save a project to redevelop a community cinema. Last week, Reform-led Barnsley Council decided to pull funding for works at Penistone Town Hall, which is home to Penistone Paramount cinema reported Victoria Sheer on bbc.co.uk . Council leader William Brown said the authority would continue to work with partners to “find the best way forward” for the town. Marie Tidball, Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has since set up a petition to reverse the decision, which she said was indefensible and undermined the building. The building in Shrewsbury Road dates back to 1914 and
was originally built to house the Carnegie Free Library, council chamber and assembly hall. According to the parish council, the assembly hall was converted into a cinema and had been used as such for more than 100 years. The building is still owned by Barnsley Council but the business itself is operated by Penistone Town Council, and run by a team of dedicated staff. On Thursday, Barnsley Council said it had taken the “difficult” decision to stop the project as part of a review of its capital programme. “The reason for this decision is that we need to ensure every pound of public money delivers the greatest possible benefit for all Barnsley residents,” said Brown. “We are committed to investing
in all of our communities, and this review will help make sure future investment is focused where it can have the greatest impact and deliver best value for our residents.” Tidball said she was “disappointed by the shocking decision” and said she was frustrated she had not been consulted or engaged with. “This decision cannot be justified. Other projects in other principal town areas, as part of the Principal Towns fund programme, have reached much later stages of investment,” she wrote online. “In Penistone, we’ve had funding on initial works at the town hall, but work on the Paramount was the next stage we were all looking forward to - the jewel in the crown of our great town.
“This flies in the face of what our government is doing nationally to make our high streets thrive and bring our communities together.” The council previously said the
work would be funded through the overarching £35m Funding for Principal Towns projects, external. Some of the money was used in 2024 to repair the roof of the old
town hall. The BBC has asked the authority to clarify how much of the £35m funding had been allocated to Penistone Paramount.

We got one point. There are a lot of things we want to do better. “First half, I think, in general, we were good on the ball. They were very, very compact, but I thought we were good. The next level is to have
a higher ball speed so we can move them around a little bit quicker. “The next step is also to bypass more opponents and also to have more situations where we speed up the game. But it’s not so easy because they are physically strong, they are very compact. “We then had more moments where we created good chances. But, of course, we want to have more.” Although Wednesday didn’t reach their highest levels, the draw was enough to keep them top of the table ahead of next weekend’s clash
