A Public Spaces Protection Order will come into force in Sheffield city centre on Monday 7 April 2025.

Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) are used by local authorities to help tackle anti-social behaviour in a particular area. Their purpose is to make public spaces safer and improve the quality of life for the local community. They work by setting out conditions and prohibiting certain activities, such as drinking alcohol, within a defined area, that apply to everyone.

Breaking the conditions of a PSPO is a criminal offence and can be enforced by local authorities and police. In Sheffield, the decision to introduce a PSPO in the city centre was agreed

at a Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee meeting on December 9 2024. This decision followed extensive consultation and feedback from the public.

Councillor Kurtis Crossland, Chair of Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council says: “Everyone wants a safe and inviting city centre to live in or visit. We are working hard to ensure this, and that the area is the very best that it can be with residents and visitors having an enjoyable and positive experience when they visit. Sheffield is one of the safest cities in the country and a PSPO would work towards keeping it that way. It’s about protecting people and stopping anti-social behaviour that

might make anyone feel unsafe or insecure.”

Superintendent Paul Ferguson, of South Yorkshire Police:

“We recognise there have been some issues in the city centre which existing legislation does not allow police or local authority officers to challenge as robustly as we would like.

“The prohibitions which our PSPO will introduce have been shaped through public feedback and our own colleagues’ recognition of the problems we come across. Its introduction will help officers shift standards of behaviour in the city centre through taking early action to prevent the types of anti-social behaviour that affect residents, visitors, and businesses in our city centre.

“Our teams are trained in how to implement the new powers introduced by the PSPO and they will be used proportionately and progressively with the aim of preventing harm to individuals and the wider community.”

From Monday 7 April 2025, the Sheffield City Council City Centre Public Spaces Protection Order 2024 will come into effect.

The order outlines a number of things that will be prohibited within the city centre boundary, including:

• Alcohol in streets

• Begging

• Loitering

• Drug use

• Urination and/or defecation

A committee report in

January 2024 outlined evidence to suggest that a PSPO was needed to address anti-social behaviour in parts of the city centre that was considered to be continuous and unreasonable. Councillors agreed to consult on the draft PSPO.

Members of the public were asked for their views on the draft PSPO and the draft boundaries for which areas a PSPO would cover. 1,205 individuals and 77 organisations responded to the consultation and just over two thirds of individual respondents thought Sheffield City Council should introduce a PSPO in the city centre, with 87% of organisations saying that they agreed with the introduction of a PSPO.

appeal for Sheffield Blitz Artefacts to Expand Museum exhibition

The Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trust is calling on the public to help bring history to life by loaning treasured artefacts, family heirlooms, and memorabilia related to the Sheffield Blitz.

As part of the Blitz Kids Project — funded by a £91,280 grant from The National Lottery — the permanent exhibition dedicated to the attacks at the National Emergency Services Museum is set to double in size in the coming months.

To ensure the expanded display tells the most powerful and personal story possible, the museum is asking the people of Sheffield if they have something they think might suit the exhibition. Items previously displayed have included coins pulled from the wreckage of the Marples Hotel, which was flattened during the Luftwaffe attacks of December 1940. The coins had fused together from the extreme heat, serving as a poignant reminder of the tragic loss of life inside the building. There’s also a bible – the only item that survived a direct hit on a Sheffield home. These deeply personal objects help illustrate the devastating impact of the blitz, making the history tangible for future generations.

Thousands of visitors a year already visit the Sheffield Blitz exhibition at the city’s National Emergency Services Museum.

A new book featuring the stories of 'blitz kids'—the last generation to have lived through the attacks – is presently in production. The funding is also supporting a series of educational and community engagement activities, including training for volunteers in interview recording, web design, and research.

If you have an item with a connection to the Sheffield Blitz and would consider loaning or donating, please get in touch with the Sheffield Emergency Services Museum on 0114 249 1999 or email info@visitnesm.org.uk

on saturday 26th april 2025, abbeydale Live will launch with over 50 live acts performing across 14 venues, the festival will transform abbeydale road into a one-day showcase of music, independence, and community collaboration. Born from the energy of local traders, artists, and neighbours, Abbeydale Live has its roots in shared challenges and a desire to see the area thrive. The event is produced by the Abbeydale Traders Association, which formed in 2022

in the wake of a series of break-ins affecting small businesses along the road. Since then, what started as mutual support has grown into something much bigger—helped along by a successful bid to the Economic Recovery Fund, and the creation of the Independent Abbeydale brand. This year’s event builds on the success of Independent Abbeydale’s 2024 pilot autumn festival, with an even wider mix of music, performances and activities taking place in venues up and down

the street. From pubs and cafés to bars and bottle shops, each space is hosting something different—and all of it free. The line-up features acts like the Langsett Dance Orchestra, University of Sheffield Big Band, Montuno, and emerging performers from WaterBear Music College. The full artist line-up will be released closer to the time. The festival’s production is being overseen by Tim Foulerton-Walker, a seasoned programmer and event coordinator with deep roots in Sheffield’s cultural scene.

Alongside the live venues, a Buskers Corner by the Greek Village will bring a street performance element to the day, with pop-up performances dotted around shopfronts and side streets. Families are also catered for, with Broadfield Park transformed into a kids’ area hosted by Everyone Active (formerly Sheffield City Trust). Entertainment will include appearances by crowd favourite Benoit the Magician, as well as activities for all ages throughout the day.

help for homelessness

A ‘newspaper’ that highlights the support available across the city to those experiencing rough sleeping, homelessness or vulnerability has been relaunched after being brought back into print.

A special event was held at Sheffield’s Winter Garden on Tuesday 25th March where members of the public could meet professionals who work to support those experiencing homelessness. As well as raising awareness with the public, people learned who to turn to if either they may be at risk of homelessness in future, or if they are concerned about somebody they know.

Here, they could also pick up a copy of the brand new edition of the Help us Help ‘newspaper’, which has been brought back into print. Developed in partnership with Supertram and the Help Us Help Steering Group, its mission is to raise awareness about homelessness and the efforts being made to support those in need.

The event ran from 1pm to 5pm, and featured many organisations involved in supporting those in need. These included, amongst others, Framework, Shelter, South Yorkshire Police, The Archer Project and Ben’s Centre.

Visitors could learn about the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and the multi-agency approach to providing support, as well as the signposting on where to turn to get people support.

Thanks to support from Sheffield BID, 4,000 copies have already been distributed to more than 220 outlets across the city centre, Broomhill and Kelham Island, from cafes to independent shops, libraries and cinemas.

Cllr Douglas Johnson said “It was great to be in attendance at this launch event to see the finished product that has been brilliantly put together by partners coming together. Homelessness and rough sleeping has

been on the increase nationally. Helping people who need support is a complex issue, and only by working together can partners continue to offer that support and drive homelessness figures down.”

Cllr Kurtis Crossland commented “Supporting the launch of the Help Us Help newspaper is more than just raising awareness— it’s about fostering a safer, more compassionate community. By amplifying the voices of those experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping, we are building a community where everyone feels safe and supported within Sheffield – particularly those who need us when experiencing difficulties.”

And James Stewart, Supertram’s Head of Customer Service and Operations explained “We met with our colleagues at Sheffield City Council to discuss the work that they do and we were quite happy to support. We’re based in the city centre, so it’s important to us to help the communities we serve in the areas that we operate in.”

Diane Jarvis of BID spoke about the newspaper:

“Help Us Help performs crucial work daily, supporting individuals who find themselves sleeping rough on the city centre streets. Through our partnership, a variety of services are offered to assist those most in need.

The newspaper plays a vital role in spreading the message that support is available. We urge the business community to review the updated newspaper and visit the Help us Help website for the latest information on how to support those experiencing homelessness.”

Now the ‘newspaper’ has been launched, it will be distributed across multiple channels to maximize reach, as well as being available to download from the Help Us Help website.

debt problems? tackle them!

Debt can really drag us down, nagging at the back of our minds, but it’s absolutely possible to tackle it with the right approach. Now is the perfect time to make a new financial start, and personal loan experts share seven tips to help reduce your debt for good.

Step 1 - Take ownership of your debt

The first and most important step to tackling debt starts with your mindset. What you need to do is accept it and see it for what it is - a numbers game, not a character flaw. The more debt you pay off, the closer you are to financial control and freedom. Think about debt in a very clinical way - simply get cracking on paying it off as quickly as you can, with the least amount of interest.

Step 2 - Clarify exactly how much you owe Bite the bullet and write it all down - how much you owe, the APR you’re paying on each debt, and what your minimum payments are for each. Once you face it, you can start to fix it. Debt is a numbers game, and there is no number too large to be reduced.

Step 3 - Decide the best method to pay off your debt

There are two tried and true methods of tackling debt - the debt snowball method and the debt avalanche method. Both work, and it’s important to assess each one and decide which method is better for you,.

• Debt snowball method. The debt snowball method taps into basic human psychology, encouraging you to build motivation by paying off your smallest debt first. The sense of reward you get from paying this off, propels you to keep going.

• Debt avalanche method. The debt avalanche method focuses on paying off your highest interest (and therefore most expensive) debt. Paying off your most costly debts first is the fastest and most powerful way to free up your money.

Step 4 - SLASH interest payments to clear your debt faster

• Talk to your lenders about lowering your interest rate. Lenders can be surprisingly understanding about negotiating a lower interest rate - especially if you’ve previously paid on time. Be open

about your situation and demonstrate a willingness to work with them on a solution.

• Transfer your debt. A great way to reduce interest on your debt is to transfer it to a 0% balance transfer or money transfer credit card, with an interest-free period of 12-18 months. You’ll now owe your new card but at a far lower rate.

Tip: It’s better to transfer some of your debt, even if you can’t transfer all of it.

Step 5 - Create a rock solid repayment plan

Put together a timeline with a realistic end date by which you expect to have paid off your debt. Then, set up key check-in dates along the way - for example, if your timeline is two years for debt repayment, set check-in reminders every three months. You will use these check-in times to examine your debt repayment progress and see if you’re on track, or whether you need to adjust the timeline or make some changes. Set minimum debt repayments to automatically leave your bank account, and make sure you never miss a payment.

Step 6 - Cut back on unnecessary expenses

It’s a no-brainer that the more money you have, the faster you can pay off debt - and the more money you can save for the future. Finding extra money doesn’t have to be as dramatic as taking on an extra job (although you can do this if you have the time). Cancel subscriptions you don’t use, and sell anything that you don’t need - old clothes in good condition, furniture and old but usable tech.

Step 7 - Commit to rewriting your financial future

In order to break the patterns that led you to get into debt in the first place, you need to think about how you got here. Remember - this isn’t about shaming you for your past, but safeguarding your future, so that you can enjoy financial freedom. Recognise your triggers for overspending, and write down what you want from a debtfree future, to remind yourself every day of the importance of a debt-free life.

The experts add: “Taking the first step to tackle your debt is a brave onebut it’s well worth it. “

students support charity

Sporty students aimed to be the top dogs on campus when they took on a mammoth charity challenge.

Members of Sheffield Sabres, the University of Sheffield’s American Football team, were taking part in a sponsored 12-hour ‘Spinathon’ in aid of local charity Support Dogs. Up to 100 members of the team were due to chip in to the feat, each cycling ‘shifts’ on two static bikes throughout the event, which took place on Friday, March 28 at the university’s Student’s Union. They aimed to reach 142 miles on each bike – representing the number of families Support Dogs has helped over the last year. Their target is £500. The team were even more keen to help Sheffield-based Support Dogs, which trains and provides assistance dogs to help autistic children, as well as adults with epilepsy or a physical disability, to live safer, more independent lives, after some members attended one of the charity’s Meet the Dogs events.

There, they heard how the remarkable dogs have helped to transform the lives of clients, including wheelchair user Amanda Davidson, a former Police officer who was injured in the line of duty and whose support dog Chris assists her with a range of tasks, from helping her into her wheelchair to helping her to get dressed. They also heard how

Brogan Evans’ life was transformed by epilepsy seizure alert dog Wadsley, who gives her a 100 per cent reliable warning up to 50 minutes in advance of a seizure, enabling her to carry on living her life and enjoying sports such as rugby.

Afterwards, treasurer Will said: “We are very keen to help and would love to do more. I love dogs – hearing about the work of Support Dogs has been extra special. It’s amazing what they can do, especially the epilepsy seizure alert dogs and how they are so specific on the alert time they gave in advance of each seizure. ”

Tosin Akintola is charity and sponsorship secretary of the team, which played its first season in 2000 and whose previous charity events include a ‘Liftathon’ in which they collectively lifted over 200,000kg. The 23-year-old said: “I’ve heard how the dogs are trained to help people with epileptic seizures, as well as with autism or a physical disability. I’m a medical student myself, so to hear how these dogs can help people from children all the way up to adults is really amazing to see. I feel it’s a really worthwhile cause to support.”

Rita Howson, chief executive of Support Dogs, said: “We’re so grateful to Sheffield Sabres for their fantastic efforts in helping our charity. We can’t wait to hear how it went.”

“yes to quit” campaign

The Yes to Quit campaign has launched across TV, radio, transport links and social media this week, throughout Yorkshire and the Humber. It asks audiences ‘what will you miss?’ more than smoking, such as weddings, births or quality time with others, that two in three smokers will miss by dying too soon unless they quit. The campaign coincides with the Tobacco and Vapes Bill’s progression through Parliament, which aims to create a smoke-free generation by restricting the sale of tobacco products and regulating vaping. Tobacco remains one of the most preventable causes of ill health, disability, and death; and there are at least 16,000 hospital admissions due to smoking and around 5,900 deaths in South Yorkshire per year. Whilst rates of smoking are falling in South Yorkshire, down to around 150,000 smokers, we are continuously pushing to lower these numbers even further.

The Yes to Quit website, yestoquit.co.uk, shares information about ways to quit and links to local stop smoking services.

“This campaign is a stark reminder that smoking kills two in three longterm smokers – claiming over 7,500 lives each year in Yorkshire and Humber alone. That’s why we are uniting across the region to help people quit and protect future generations from ever starting. The Third Reading of the historic Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a once-in-a-generation chance to protect people from this uniquely lethal product and make it easier for smokers to quit for good. Most people who smoke want to stop, and with the right support – whether stop smoking services, quitting aids, or switching completely to vaping – it’s much easier. Thousands successfully quit every year and live healthier, longer lives. If you’ve tried before, don’t stop trying. Your next attempt could be the one that works.”

Chris Wilder hailed Friday’s success over Coventry City as a ‘good night’ for his players and the supporters, as the Blades regained top spot in the table. Reflecting on the 26th win of the campaign after goals from Gustavo Hamer,
