electric studios expands creative hub for young people & adults Sheffield’s Electric Studios is expanding its creative programme with a new home for Stand & Be Counted Theatre, giving young people and adults a dedicated space for performances, workshops and collaboration. The move comes as the venue heads into an autumn of live music and club nights, including Milburn’s hometown celebration of 20 years of Well Well Well. When Electric Studios opened in March, it set out an ambition to bring touring artists, Sheffield’s

music communities and emerging creative talent together under one roof. Welcoming Stand & Be Counted gives that ambition a new dimension, with theatre and opportunities to make and share work alongside the venue’s live music programme. Following a major refurbishment of the former Leadmill nightclub on Leadmill Road, the building now combines a highercapacity music venue with co-working and creative spaces. Stand & Be Counted’s new home spans two floors,

with offices, a shared studio for exhibitions or installations and a main workshop area suitable for performances for up to 60 people. The UK’s first theatre company of sanctuary and an associate company of Sheffield Theatres, Stand & Be Counted works with people of all ages seeking sanctuary. Its new base gives those communities a home to develop projects, meet and perform, with thousands of people expected to use the space each year. Rosie MacPherson, joint CEO of Stand & Be

Counted Theatre, said: “This is such an exciting prospect, because it gives us a home for our creative communities and a space to share our world of sanctuary. Moving into Electric Studios gives us the stability we need but also the thrill of being part of such an exciting creative community. There is so much history and inspiration in the fabric of the building. From this month, we will be welcoming thousands of people into the new space every year.” The development builds on plans outlined at

the March opening for visual arts activity and free studio access to help young people rehearse, record and develop new work. Sheffield artist Kid Acne is also establishing a base in the building. Jamie Duggan has also announced Electric Studios as a new home for Sheffield’s bassline community following Tank’s closure. With Wired Events bringing club nights to the venue, the programme builds on another important part of the city’s music culture. Nicole Jewitt, Community and Arts Project Manager, said:“What’s exciting

about SBC moving in is that it’s starting to show what we’ve talked about from the beginning, that this building can be about much more than just gigs and club nights. We’ve now got people making theatre, running workshops, developing projects and using the building every week alongside the live programme. It feels like the creative community around Electric is really starting to take shape, and I’m excited to see what grows from having all these different people working under one roof.”

sheffield 10k raises thousands

News, Information and Advice public health director report brown This year’s Director of Public Health report focuses on collective action in our communities, which when empowered, help keep people healthy and happy. The report defines collective action as working together toward a shared goal or purpose and highlights how when communities and organisations pool their resources and strengths, they can achieve more than anyone could alone - whether that’s improving health, influencing decisions, or solving community problems. Working together involves listening to people and communities, learning from experiences, and using that knowledge to guide action. Examples of excellent community action included in the report show how Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre re-opened as a community-run hub supported by over 100 volunteers alongside paid staff following a risk of closure due to budget constraints and social enterprise ‘Printed by Us’, which supports people who have experienced homelessness or other challenges by providing structured and supported employment and skills building opportunities, as part of a local charity The Archer Project. Two other powerful examples given in the report of communities working successfully together are Dore Open Door Lunch Club, a long-running community group that offers older adults a warm, familiar place to share a weekly meal and companionship, sustained in part by a small Sheffield City Council Grant, and Clean Zone Community Network in Burngreave, which supports people who are struggling with the cost of living and are on a low income. The report reiterates how collective action is important for health, wellbeing and the economy, looks at how collective action can be measured, discusses what helps and supports communities to take collective action, how key organisations can help and emphasises the importance of voice, influence, and participation. Current examples of community action in the city are recognised as demonstrating that:

• Passionate people make a big difference • Community development and community anchors can create the connections needed for action • Communities care about spaces • Large institutions have much to learn from these approaches in their own programmes and services • Collaboration multiplies successes • Adaptable and holistic support in community settings works Last year, Sheffield City Council launched a new Communities Strategy and in early 2026, the council launched One Sheffield, Many Communities which celebrates the different communities that make Sheffield the city that it is. Nationally, the NHS Neighbourhood Health Framework recognises the impact of community-led support where people feel more control over their health and care. This is being translated into a Sheffield vision for neighbourhood health by local partners which aims to grow community power through long lasting partnerships. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “These examples and the others that we reference show the breadth and extent to which people in our communities can and do work together to create enormous benefit. They recognise what can be developed in their hands to shape, craft, inspire and facilitate and then they work together to make it happen. During all of this they are building the health and wellbeing of individuals, strengthening resilience in their communities, and building better futures. As we say in the report, community is the cornerstone of prevention, and community-led and based support can have a huge impact where other approaches struggle. Developing healthy places and communities is one of the building blocks in the Fair and Healthy Sheffield Plan, with supporting communities to work together and take action a main priority.”

recycling bins for doncaster

From 1st October, households in Doncaster will receive their annual bin collection calendar through their door. Information included helps residents keep track of when their collection days are, what goes where and how to put other items out for collection such as batteries and vapes, which can now be collected at the kerbside if contained in a clear plastic bag on your blue recycling bin. This year, calendars also carry an important message to residents that their recycling service will be changing in 2027, with the introduction of the new Brown Bin to the recycling family. This will bring Doncaster in line with new Government rules that state councils are required by law to collect paper and card separately to other recyclable materials. Currently, households in Doncaster that receive a bin collection typically split their waste into four different bins: • Blue bin for recycling • Black bin for nonrecyclable waste • Green bin for garden waste • Green box for glass However, under the changes, the blue bin will be used solely for paper and card. The new ‘brown bin’ will be used for other dried recyclable items, including: • Liquid cartons (Tetra Pak, Pure-Pak), such as soup and juice cartons • Tins, Cans and Foil • Empty aerosols • Plastic bottles and bottle lids • Plastic pots, tubs and trays • Metal lids from glass bottles and jars Glass will still be collected using the green box. Black bins will remain in place for all other waste. Bin collections will remain on a fortnightly cycle (recycling oneweek, black bins the next). More information on the delivery of the brown bins and what to expect will be announced later in the year.

backing for castle hill park timetable timetable for design and construction professional Atherevised delivery of Castle of the park to make sure Hill Park has been the remains are both body for developed to ensure properly preserved for the original vision for future generations and, the park is realised funerals where feasible, displayed and the site’s unique A national campaign to raise standards in the funeral sector has secured cross-party political backing from three MPs. The Funeral Officiant Authority (FOA), was launched in May by experienced celebrants Sacha Mulligan and Michelle Harvey, to vet and standardise funeral celebrants and ministers across the UK. The FOA is fighting to introduce clearer professional standards for those conducting funeral ceremonies across the UK, and their work comes in the wake of a string of scandals. These include the shocking case of Robert Bush who was recently jailed after admitting 67 offences, including 30 of preventing the lawful burial of a body. At present there is no formal regulation preventing individuals from conducting funeral ceremonies without recognised training, vetting or accountability processes. Now, in a major step forward, the FOA’s campaign has now secured the support of four MPs. They include Mark Sewards, the Labour MP for Leeds and West Morley who has spoken publicly about this issue many times in the past. He said: “Bereaved families deserve to know that everyone involved in their loved one’s funeral will act with care and professionalism. Any work that gives families greater peace of mind is welcome, which is why I support the Funeral Officiant Authority’s efforts to strengthen safeguards and transparency among funeral celebrants and officiants. As I continue to press the Government for full regulation of the funeral sector, the FOA’s work can improve standards and protect families.” Gareth Bacon, Conservative MP for Orpington said “I would lend my support to a form of registration for celebrants and I am reassured to know that this is also the aim of professional Celebrants and Funeral Directors.”

heritage is preserved. While the park will open later than originally anticipated, the changes will ensure the remains of Sheffield’s medieval Castle are properly preserved, celebrated and incorporated into a landmark new public space on the historic Castlegate site. Sheffield City Council continues to proactively work closely with Historic England, the Local Planning Authority, the Castlegate Board, including the Friends of Sheffield Castle and the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust, and the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service to agree the most appropriate approach to preserving and presenting the remains on site. The evolving nature of excavations and understanding of archaeological remains, together with specialist requirements associated with integrating these and the deculverted River Sheaf into the park, have added significant complexity as the project has progressed, making this one of the council most complex regeneration projects. Through their investigations, they now have a greater understanding of the nature and extent of the archaeology. These findings are having to be integrated into the

for people to enjoy in the new park. The revised approach will help ensure the full ambition and vision for the park is realised. This will include revealing the River Sheaf, creating an events space as the focus for the local community and play opportunities for children, as well as keeping the site’s history at the forefront of the design. Key elements of the archaeology, hidden for centuries, will be displayed and interpreted as part of the finished scheme, allowing visitors to experience a walk through over 800 years of Sheffield history. The agreed exposing of the culverted river works on the River Sheaf through the site, including a fish pass to allow salmon and other species to go up the Sheaf, continues to make strong progress. This has been helped by the extended period of dry weather over the summer. Further progress on the river is dependent on the weather conditions remaining favourable as the project continues. The current programme indicates that the completed park and the River Sheaf works are expected to be delivered together by summer 2028. The financial implications of the revised programme are currently being assessed.

Thousands of runners, volunteers and spectators came together in Sheffield today for the return of the Sheffield 10K, creating a fantastic celebration of running, fundraising and community spirit. The event was followed by the ever-popular Mini and Junior races, which inspired the next generation of runners to get involved. Starting in the heart of the city on Arundel Gate, participants took on a scenic route through some of Sheffield’s most iconic green spaces, including Endcliffe Park, Bingham Park and the Botanical Gardens, before heading back into the city centre for a memorable finish-line experience. As with all Run For All events, charity remained at the heart of the day. Thousands of pounds were raised for a wide range of local and national causes, including the event’s partner charities Framework, Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Paces, Rain Rescue, Roundabout, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, Sheffield Young Carers, Sheffield Futures, St Luke’s and Sheffield Cat Shelter. The event once again demonstrated the power of running to make a positive difference in communities across the region. While fundraising and personal achievement were central to the day’s success, there was also fierce competition at the front of the field, with some of the region’s leading athletes battling for top honours. In the men’s race, Leo Cossham claimed victory in a time of 31:56. Daniel Hallam secured second place in 32:18, while

Jake Leng completed the podium in third with a time of 32:53. The women’s race saw Claire Frankland take the win in an impressive 36:01. Hannah Morrison finished second in 37:53, closely followed by Charlotte Slack, who claimed third place in 38:14. Adding to the excitement, the Mini and Junior events gave hundreds of young runners the opportunity to experience the thrill of race day, crossing the finish line to enthusiastic cheers from family and friends. The Corporate Challenge also returned, bringing together businesses and organisations from across the region to compete as teams, adding an extra element of camaraderie and friendly competition to the day. Tristan Batley-Kyle, Operations Director at Run For All said: “A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in the Sheffield 10K today. From those chasing personal bests to runners taking on their first 10K, every participant should be incredibly proud of their achievement. The atmosphere across the city has been fantastic, and we’d like to thank our runners, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and charity partners for making the event such a success. Together, they have helped create a memorable day while raising vital funds for charities and good causes.”

Strictly Come Dancing Live takes the magic of the BBC TV show and turns it up to another level. From the moment audiences step into the arena, they’ll be swept up in an electric atmosphere of pure joy, surrounded by thousands of fellow Strictly fans coming together to experience all the glitz and

glamour of the live tour. Head judge Shirley Ballas said: “I just love the Strictly tour and all the banter that I have with Anton and Craig! It’s the best way to start the year and I can’t wait to see our incredible fans all over the country.” Anton Du Beke said: “I love the Strictly Tour for many reasons but particularly that we get to see the audiences all around the country and they can experience how fantastic the dancers are. Sitting behind the judges’ desk is always a joy and it’s the best way to start the new year.” Craig Revel Horwood said: “This FAB-U-LOUS live tour is great fun for all of us and gives audiences the chance to see our spectacular cast of celebrities and professional dancers in a whole new way. Dust off your dancing shoes darlings, it is not to be missed!”

On the Strictly Live Tour there is one very important decision to be made at every show – and that decision is not in the hands of the judges: which couple will lift the Glitterball Trophy? The judges are there to critique and provide their invaluable opinions on each

dance routine, but they do not hold the power. This lies with the audience, who can vote using their mobile phones to decide who is the winner. Each tour performance will host a British Sign Language interpreter, who will be displayed on two

very large screens on either side of the stage so that the audiences can book tickets and sit almost anywhere in the arena to enjoy the experience with family and friends. The event comes on 26 January to Sheffield Utilita Arena (Tuesday 26 at 2.30pm & 7.30pm)

a vicar of dibley christmas!

Experience Sheffield’s extraordinary musical legacy reimagined by string trio Simply Strings in an atmospheric candlelit setting. Featuring music from ABC, The Human League, Arctic Monkeys and Richard Hawley, this intimate concert celebrates the sounds of a city that has shaped British music for generations.

Geraldine’s back—and Dibley is as gloriously chaotic as ever! Join the villagers of Dibley for a laugh-outloud stage play packed with classic comedy, unforgettable moments and all the eccentricity that made the television series a national favourite. Featuring famous storylines, familiar faces, and culminating in the hilariously disastrous Nativity, this is an evening of sharp comedy and plenty of laughs from start to finish in a celebration of one of Britain’s most iconic sitcoms.

After winning the FIFPRO Player Voice Award last year, Vaulks was given a grant from the PFA to

Blades women lose out in tight game United Women fell to a narrow defeat in another match of fine margins as two second half efforts from range swung the match in favour of unbeaten Ipswich Town. The Blades made one change as Sophie Harwood replaced the injured Chloe Warrington, and it was United who started the better side as Ella Kinzett had the first attempt three minutes into the match. Lucy Quinn then saw a cross come back off the

dedicate to his charitable endeavours and opted to bring the gold-level Workplace Pledge to S6. Vaulks said: “When I received PFA funding, the first club I wanted to help was Sheffield Wednesday. “They’ve obviously been through a lot in the last few years as a football club and I had two great years there as a player, so it just felt right to give back. I want to thank the PFA for supporting me with the funding and I’m very much look forward to this collaboration.” Mike McCarthy, founder of The Baton of Hope, said: “It is heartening to welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the Baton of Hope Workplace Pledge. With Sheffield United also having signed up, both of this great city’s major football clubs are showing a shared commitment to suicide prevention. Despite greater awareness of

mental health, far too many lives are still lost to suicide. By helping staff, players and supporters recognise when someone may be struggling and know how to respond, these clubs can make a real difference across Sheffield and beyond.” Wednesday club captain Liam Palmer said: “We’re all aware of the alarming statistics surrounding suicide, so I’m very pleased to see the club joining this important initiative and look forward to taking part in the sessions. In my time as a player, the attitudes towards discussing your emotions as a young man have improved, but there’s always more we can all do, so to spread the message across the Sheffield Wednesday family is another leap forward.”

crossbar before Amy Andrews went even closer, a volleyed effort hitting the woodwork and bouncing down close to going over the line, but play was waved on despite United’s appeals. Sian Rogers then made good saves from Megan Hornby and another on half-time, but in between that both Charlie Devlin and Andrews had efforts saved by Lysianne Proulx. The second half started in the same fashion as Tilly Bristow had a shot deflected wide, but the first blow came just before the hour mark when Hornby found the net from long range. And with 20 minutes to go another effort from distance doubled the visitors’ lead, this time Princess Ademiluyi finding the top corner with a powerful shot.

United responded through substitute Connie Scofield as the midfielder cut in and fired home her first Blades goal, and that swung momentum back United’s way as the Blades threw everything at the Tractor Girls late on. Ava Baker saw another effort narrowly deflected wide but it was the visitors who held on to take home the three points.

Ex-Sheffield United and EFL stalwart, Billy Sharp, has landed the latest club of his footballing career, although the identity will certainly surprise plenty of people. The 40-year-old is, as proven by the statistics, the greatest goalscorer the Championship has ever seen in modern times, scoring 130 times in English football’s second tier across 397 appearances since its rebrand in 2004. It is impossible to think of Sharp’s lengthy career, throughout which he has starred in all of the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two, without his three spells

at Sheffield United, with the latter certainly bringing plenty of success at Bramall Lane, largely under Chris Wilder. However, whilst Sharp will no doubt be wishing his boyhood club well for the coming months, those who have adored him in S2 and fellow South Yorkshire side, Doncaster Rovers, in particular, will now hope to see him banging the goals in, in a different format. Throughout his senior career, Sharp has scored a total of 299 goals in 813 appearances, as well as racking up 78 assists in the process. Last season, the experienced forward scored 14 times in all competitions

for Doncaster, with his final outing for the Reds seeing him clinch a hat-trick against Peterborough United on the last day of the season. He has since expressed a desire to continue playing despite questions over potential retirement, and supporters can now see the Steel City native turning out for N5 FC of Baller League UK. The Baller League concept was first introduced in the UK in 2025, and it was claimed earlier this year by CEO, Felix Starck, “I still think that we’re going to see Premier League teams in Baller League sooner than later.”The six-a-side competition begins its fourth season on October 12th, with

matches mainly taking place in London’s Copper Box Arena. As well as being coached by former Arsenal and German international goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, N5 UK also boast the likes of Ryan Tunnicliffe, Joe Bennett, Mustapha Carayol and Nile Ranger among their ranks. Sharp’s passion for the game at all levels is clearly infectious, and his involvement with Baller League UK will certainly help the concept gain more traction due to his stature, especially in the EFL. However, he has clearly been keeping himself busy in recent times, revealing that he even has plans to feature in the dugout,

potentially with Sheffield United. “Yeah, obviously timing and opportunities, they come at different times and, like I say, I’ve prepared for that. I’ve done my - well they’re called diplomas now. I’ve done my B license and my A license. I’m on my LMA managers diploma. I’m coaching at the minute as well,” said Sharp. “That is something I want to do. I want to be a manager. I’d love to manage Sheffield United one day, but there’s so much work to go into before that that could possibly happen.”

mercy but Dominic Iorfa came to Rotherham’s rescue with a superb block against all the odds. The Millers gradually grew into the game and Paul Mullin came close to meeting a Kaleta cross, and it was déjà vu moments later when the Rotherham skipper came agonisingly close to tapping home from another fine Kaleta run and cross, but he failed to make a telling connection. On the half-hour mark, Rotherham produced their move of the half which ended when Kaleta released Hall, who planted a cross, which was bravely blocked by Charlie Cummins en-route to goal with a number of away attackers lurking for a tap in. Luca Woodhouse became

the first to see yellow for unceremoniously bundling over Kaleta in full flow before Austerfield had a shot blocked in the last act of the half following good build-up work from Kaleta and Mullin. The Millers had the first sight of goal in the second 45 when Jili Buyabu cleverly exchanged passes with Mullin, and the Sheffield United loanee took aim from a tight angle, but his rising effort cleared the crossbar and also the stand housing the Millers travelling contingent behind the goal. The game needed a spark and it got one when Exeter opened the scoring six minutes into the half. There looked little danger for the Millers until Cummins clever pass found Birch in space, and the City wingman delivered a near post cross, and Scully got

in front of Ngwenya before turning the ball home from close range. The Millers responded positively to the setback and a neat through-ball presented Mullin with the chance to strike, but Bycroft appeared to get the slightest of tip overs to deny him. The Millers were looking for a route back into the game, and they appealed more in hope than in expectation when Spence lost his footing under the challenge of Cummins in the box, but the referee took no further action. The Millers failed to sustain any kind of late rally – with only rare glimpses of the home goal including Mullin’s miscued effort with the last kick of the game – while Cummins’ late booking for a foul on Spence failed to take the gloss off Exeter’s victory

millers away-day blank Rotherham United returned from their largest journey in Sky Bet League Two emptyhanded as Anthony Scully had a debut to remember for Exeter City, as his second half strike settled the Devon clash in his side’s favour. The Millers struggled to find their best form at St James Park, and Exeter City – under the stewardship of former Millers boss Matt Taylor – earned just their second win of the campaign – with just fifth goal of the season thanks to Scully’s effort. Millers head coach Alex Bruce made three changes to his starting line-up for the trip to the South West following their home draw with Crewe Alexandra in their last home outing. Kieran

Ngwenya cut short his international duty with Trinidad and Tobago to line-up in a Millers back four. Manchester United Jayce Fitzgerald was part of a midfield three while Marvin Kaleta was rewarded for his substitute cameo against the Railwaymen with a starting berth. Kian Spence, Aaron Nemane and Tom Bradshaw – all starters last week – were named on the visitors bench. The Millers made a slow start, and they had an early scare when Josh Gordon looked to get on the end of a ricochet, and Julian Eyestone, in an attempt to snuff out the threat, could only divert the ball to Anthony Scully, who looked a certain scorer on his City debut, when he had an unguarded goal at his
