man with a pram is now a sheffield legend John Burkhill, affectionately known as “The Man with the Pram”, was recognised for his extraordinary fundraising achievements and decades of service to charitable causes. Having raised more than £1.2 million for Macmillan Cancer Support, John has become one of Sheffield’s best-known and most admired community champions. The unveiling ceremony took place outside Sheffield Town Hall on Tuesday 29 September, before invited guests gather for a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor. John lost his wife, June, to breast cancer in 1992 – a year to the day after they lost their daughter, Karen, during a routine procedure at the age of 29. The pram
which John has used to become an iconic figure and collect money was originally bought for Karen as a baby. He fundraises for Macmillan in their memory, pushing his late daughter’s pram, purchased in 1961, across the city and in every race, he participates in, sporting his distinct green wig and foam hand. John has spent decades raising money and awareness for good causes, particularly cancer charities. His decorated pram has become a familiar sight at events, parades and fundraising activities across Sheffield. Through his work as the “Man with the Pram”, he has raised more than £1.2 million for Macmillan Cancer Support. With his trademark green wig and charity pram, John has become a Sheffield icon.
His fundraising adventures have seen him take on epic walking challenges across the UK, often covering hundreds of miles to raise money for charity. Along the way, he has inspired thousands of people to donate, volunteer and support good causes, while shining a spotlight on the generosity of communities in Sheffield and beyond. The Sheffield Legends scheme celebrates people who have made an outstanding contribution to the city and its communities. The plaque will recognise John’s commitment to helping others and the lasting impact he has had on generations of Sheffield residents. The Sheffield Legends plaque will stand as a permanent tribute to John’s contribution and to
the generosity, community spirit and resilience he represents. Councillor Andrew Sangar, Lord Mayor of Sheffield said: “John Burkhill is one of Sheffield’s best-known and most loved community champions. Following personal tragedy, he devoted his life to helping others and has gone on to raise more than £1.2 million for Macmillan. His kindness, determination and generosity have touched countless lives and made a real difference across our city. It is only fitting that we recognise his remarkable contribution with a Sheffield Legends plaque.” John commented “Sheffield has always been my home and the people of this city have supported me every step of the way. I’m incredibly proud
and humbled to receive this recognition. If my fundraising has encouraged even one person to support Macmillan or help someone affected by cancer, then every mile and every push of the pram has been worthwhile. As long as I’m able, I’ll keep pushing the pram, raising awareness and supporting Macmillan.” And Sarah Peet of macmillan said: “We are incredibly proud and thrilled that John has been honoured in this way by his beloved city and the people of Sheffield. We are also eternally grateful to John and the amazing people of Sheffield who have supported him over the last 2 decades to raise over £1.2 million for Macmillan Cancer Support.

new strategy for south yorks autumn bugs? - check this out it’s out of this world! Leaders from across South Yorkshire came together on Friday (18 September) to launch a new shared strategy for the region, setting out a long-term vision to improve opportunities, health and prosperity for people across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The South Yorkshire Strategy is built around three ambitions: helping every person in South Yorkshire stay near and go far, making South Yorkshire the healthiest region in the country, and ensuring every community is connected and proud of its place. It has been developed in partnership with local authorities, businesses, the NHS, education providers, community organisations and residents. It brings together the ambitions, priorities and evidence that will help shape decision-making and investment across the region over the coming decade. The launch event, held at Barnsley Civic, brought together organisations and stakeholders who helped shape the strategy through months of engagement, collaboration and consultation. Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “South Yorkshire’s story has always been written by people coming together to get things done and that same spirit sits at the heart of our strategy. Over the last year, businesses, public services, community organisations and local people have helped shape a shared vision for South Yorkshire. They’ve told us what matters most: good jobs and opportunity, healthier lives, strong communities, and places people can be proud to call home. It isn’t a strategy that belongs to SYMCA or any single organisation. It’s a strategy that belongs to South Yorkshire. It’s our collective commitment to creating a place where every person can stay near and go far, the healthiest region in the country, where every community is connected and proud to call this place home. Now the real work begins. The success of the strategy won’t be measured by the words on the pages, but by the difference it makes in people’s lives over the years ahead. If we continue to work together with the same
ambition, energy and determination that got us here, I’m confident South Yorkshire’s best days are still ahead of us.” The strategy was informed by engagement carried out across South Yorkshire, alongside evidence, existing plans and the expertise of partners throughout the region. It is designed to provide a shared framework for action while recognising the distinct strengths and identities of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. Louisa Harrison Walker OBE, CEO of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce said: “Sheffield Chamber is proud to support a strategy that enables people to ‘stay near and go far’- accessing good jobs, skills and opportunities close to home, while giving them the confidence and connections to succeed nationally and globally. By working together, we can create a thriving South Yorkshire where businesses grow, talent flourishes and no one feels they must leave the region to fulfil their potential.” Chris Edwards, Chief Executive of NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “NHS South Yorkshire is fully committed to ambition two to make South Yorkshire the healthiest region in the country. We want to enable everyone to live healthier lives and to reach their full potential. We want to make sure health outcomes are determined by where people live and not by how much they earn, so everyone can have the opportunity to live well.” The strategy is being published alongside South Yorkshire’s Growth Plan, the region’s longterm economic strategy. The final plan builds on the vision published last year and sets out a clear programme of action to deliver growth and opportunity across South Yorkshire. The South Yorkshire Strategy was endorsed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Board last week and marks the beginning of a new phase of collective action across the region. Homeowners are being urged to carry out five simple checks as spiders, woodlice and silverfish become more noticeable around the house this autumn. Brits could be forgiven for thinking the summer would never end after the UK recorded its hottest summer on record. But as temperatures drop and windows start closing, homeowners are being warned to keep an eye out for some unwelcome visitors creeping indoors. From spiders and woodlice to silverfish, the appearance of certain bugs around the home can sometimes be more than just an autumn nuisance. Experts say repeated sightings could point to damp, excess moisture or gaps around the property that need attention. George Edwards of Timberwise, said: “Seeing the occasional spider or woodlouse is perfectly normal. What’s worth paying attention to is when you keep seeing the same insect in the same part of the house.” Here are five checks homeowners should make before autumn gets into full swing. 1. Check bathrooms and kitchens for damp Finding the odd silverfish in your home isn’t necessarily a reason to panic. But if they keep turning up in bathrooms, kitchens or utility rooms, it could be time to investigate. Silverfish thrive in damp conditions, meaning repeated sightings can be a clue that an area isn’t drying out properly. Edwards said: “If you’re regularly seeing them round a bathroom or utility room, start looking for why that area’s staying damp. Check under sinks, round baths and showers, behind appliances and round pipework.” 2. Don’t simply squash woodlice Woodlice might be harmless, but repeatedly finding them indoors could be a sign that something is attracting them into the property. They need damp conditions to survive, so homeowners who spot a regular stream of them should check the areas around doors, walls and air bricks. Edwards said: “Check moisture round door thresholds, air bricks and outside walls, and whether leaves or vegetation have built up against the building. The insect itself might do no damage at all, but
whatever’s attracting it usually needs sorting.” 3. Look for the gaps bugs are using to get inside Spiders are another familiar sight as summer gives way to autumn. House spiders become more noticeable from August into October, with males leaving their webs to search for mates. That can mean more of them making their way indoors through open windows, doors and tiny gaps around the property. But there is a simple way to reduce the number of unwanted visitors. “Check gaps round window frames, doors, pipes and cables,” Edwards said. “Draught excluders, insect screens and properly sealed openings do the job, and they prepare the house for colder weather at the same time.” 4. Clear your gutters before the autumn rain arrives Gutters might not be the most exciting job on the household to-do list, but experts say autumn is exactly when homeowners should be checking them. After a dry summer, fallen leaves can quickly clog gutters and downpipes once autumn arrives. That can leave rainwater spilling over walls or pooling around the base of the property. Edwards said: “Water needs somewhere to go other than down the walls or pooling round the base of the building. Good maintenance is mostly about stopping moisture reaching somewhere it shouldn’t in the first place.” 5. Don’t shut the house up completely As temperatures fall, most people naturally start closing windows and spending more time indoors. But everyday activities such as showering, cooking and drying clothes continue to pump moisture into the air. Without enough ventilation, that moisture can settle on cold surfaces and contribute to condensation. Edwards said. “Keep extractor fans working and don’t block air vents, or condensation starts building on the coldest surfaces.” His advice is to pay attention if the same insects keep appearing in the same place. “If you keep finding the same insects in one spot, or there’s condensation, staining or a musty smell, that’s when the property itself is worth a proper look,” Edwards added.
The free event is now in its 12th year and attracts thousands of visitors to Sheffield city centre each year. Taking place across a range of city centre locations, Out of This World celebrates all things weird, wonderful and otherworldly. Visitors can expect a packed programme of street entertainment, live demonstrations, comic book characters, family activities, fairground rides, street food stalls and much more. The Winter Garden, Tudor Square, Town Hall and Peace Gardens will host the sci-fi, comic book, gaming and fantasy areas. Visitors can meet characters including Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Ghostbusters and Doctor Who, look out for Daleks, browse stalls and displays, and visit the Retro Gaming room. There will also be meet and greets with children’s film and animation characters, K Pop Demon Hunters interactive sessions with the Huntrix, and Scales and Tails in the Town Hall, where visitors can meet lizards and snakes. Time Travellers Professor Weft and Miss Warp will also bring their Victorian Time Machine to the event. Millennium Square, the Town Hall and Peace Gardens will become home to the Magic and Illusion Zone. The programme includes Dangerous Steve’s Sideshow, Professor Jon’s Flea Circus, Sam the Scam’s Beat the
Cheat, and creative magic sessions with Rachel the Enchantress. Magic Dave will lead sci-fi themed workshops for beginners, with the chance to learn tricks and take home simple conjuring props. Tickets are free but must be collected from the steward in front of the Town Hall to secure a place. The Halloween Zone will spread across Town Hall Square, the Town Hall, Peace Gardens, Pinstone Street and Fargate. Visitors are encouraged to wear Halloween fancy dress and enjoy family-friendly spooky entertainment. Trick and Treat will bring tricks and comedy from their wagon of weirdness, while the Pre Hee Men will appear with their prehistoric pet bird, Peep. Local dance groups Funky Dance Fever and Razzmataz will perform, and visitors can meet The Prisoner in his Halloween cage in the Peace Gardens. The classic Ghost Train will return to Fargate, the Ghostbusters will be on patrol, and the Plumber Drummer will provide a lively soundtrack with his unusual instruments. Trade stalls and caterers will also be based around the event. Out of This World will take place from 10.30am to 5.30pm on Sunday 25 October across Sheffield city centre. Entry is free and no booking is required.
St John’s 2026 Save a Life September campaign has put the power of first aid into more people’s hands as they aim to teach at least 500,000 people vital lifesaving skills. Choking Choking means the airway is partly or completely blocked, often by food. Ask if they are choking, and advise them to try to cough, but if they can’t, and are unable to speak and are very distressed, you will have to help them. Give the person up to five sharp back blows, between the shoulder blades. You need to support them to lean forwards while you give these and check after each blow to see if anything has come out. If five back blows don’t work, give up to five abdominal thrusts. To do these, stand behind them, put your arms around their waist putting a clenched fist midway between the belly button and the bottom of their chest. Grasp this hand with your other hand and pull inwards and upwards. Check between each thrust to see if it has worked. Alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts calling 999 if the blockage does not clear. Be aware they may become unresponsive and need CPR. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using a defibrillator If someone suffers a cardiac arrest, they will not be breathing normally and their heart stops. With no help, they are unlikely to survive, but by alerting the emergency services and starting CPR, we can increase their chances. If someone collapses, call 999 and then start chest compressions. Kneel beside them, placing your hands one on top of the
other in the centre of their chest, and with your shoulders directly over their body push down hard and fast, letting your hands come up fully between compressions. If trained, give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. The call handler will tell you what to do and tell anyone with you to fetch a nearby available defibrillator. Once the defibrillator arrives, turn it on and follow the instructions making sure chest compressions continue. Bleeding & haemorrhage The priority is to stop the bleeding. Make sure the area is safe for you, and if you have them, put on first aid gloves. Cover and raise the wound with a clean nonfluffy cloth, or a sterile dressing and apply direct pressure to the wound. If there is an object in the wound, don’t remove it but apply pressure each side of the object to push the edges together. Call the emergency services for advice while maintaining pressure. The loss of blood may cause the person to develop shock, so, if possible, lie them down, raising and supporting their legs, and loosen tight clothing. A cover over them will help. If the bleeding is not controlled and comes through the dressing, remove it, and reapply pressure using a new pad. If the injury is very severe, the call handler may advise on how to improvise a tourniquet. We hope that you will never need to use these skills, but it is much better to be prepared. crossed wires’ major impact on local economy Crossed Wires has announced a landmark year, with this year’s independent economic assessment confirming the 2026 festival generated £6.65 million in total economic impact, demonstrating the growing value of the event to Sheffield’s visitor economy. After doubling footfall to 50,000 attendees in 2026, the festival has further cemented its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing cultural festivals. Alongside its strong local community roots, just over half (52%) of festivalgoers travelled from outside of South Yorkshire, with 40% outside the UK North and Midlands, and Londoners sitting within the top five domestic tourists. International tickets continued to sell in the festival’s third year too, bringing audiences from America, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain,
France, Canada and Australia to Sheffield as part of their UK summer plans. Catering to a broad appetite for live podcasts across ages, 2026 headliners ranged between Get A Grip with Vicky Pattison and Angela Scanlon to Elis James and John Robins. This was reflected in almost an even spread of ages spanning 25-65 years old: Over a quarter (28%) of attendees were aged 25-34, over a third (34%) aged 35-44 and another third (32%) aged 45-64. Founded just three years ago, Crossed Wires has rapidly evolved from an ambitious start-up festival into a nationally significant event, attracting audiences from across the UK and beyond. With visitors travelling from across the country, Crossed Wires now sits alongside major city events such as the World Snooker Championship and Tramlines Festival as one of Sheffield’s most significant drivers
of tourism, visitor spend and economic activity. The 2026 festival brought together some of the biggest names in podcasting, broadcasting, comedy, sport and entertainment, drawing visitors from across the country and transforming venues throughout Sheffield into a celebration of live audio, storytelling and culture. Jili Buyabu’s slide rule pass into the box for Bradshaw was evidence of that, as the former Barnsley man found himself in the area at a tight angle and took on an early snapshot which Booth was down to save smartly. The Millers appeared to be in a 4-4-2 formation with experience in abundance at the top end of the pitch with Mullin and Bradshaw the personnel. The pair showed good synergy 10 minutes before the break as the former played a first time ball around the corner and in behind the defence, looking to release Bradshaw, who was on the same wavelength but just unable to get to it as a defender recovered in time. As the break approached, a wonderful searching pass out to the left flank from Josh Austerfield set Buyabu in motion where he tried to pick out the run of Mullin but couldn’t steer the delivery beyond the outstretched leg of Luke Offord. Mullin wouldn’t need a second invitation the next time the ball went into the Crewe area though and after some nice build up down the right from Nemane, Spence guided the ball towards the six yard box, where the former Wrexham man improvised brilliantly to redirect the ball into the far side of the goal and level it back up at 1-1. Iorfa then very nearly atoned for his own goal from a carbon copy of the manner in which it came, and at the same end of the ground, too. Spence’s high corner
was well-attacked by the central defender, who had enough purchase on his header to send it goalward before it was blocked en-route and subsequently cleared. Some lovely footwork from Aljofree in the rearguard then sent Alex forward Josh March for a hot dog before he clipped a lovely ball down the line for Buyabu, who couldn’t quite keep the ball in with his cross at the byline as the Millers continued to improve. With just shy of an hour on the clock, Mullin threatened a second of the afternoon and a fifth of the season. This time he looked to execute a very different finish as he broke for goal after a turnover in possession and lashed a long-range effort at goal which Booth was once again equal to. Bruce introduced a trio of changes with Marvin Kaleta, Jayce Fitzgerald and Joe Rafferty all entering the fray. It was the former of those whose creativity up the right very nearly saw him get an assist with his first touches of the football as he delivered a delightful low cross, which flashed across goal and agonisingly out of reach of Buyabu who was arriving at the far post but couldn’t make contact. Those substitutions gave the Millers another gear with Kaleta in particular adding some forward momentum. Another dart in which he combined with Mullin eventually fell for Ashley, who crashed a strike at goal which needed a very good save this time from Booth to
keep it at 1-1. Ashley had looked to have carried as much threat as anyone in red on the Crewe goal and did so again on 65 minutes when he leapt in a packed penalty area to direct a header from Fitzgerald’s centre towards goal, only to see Booth there to make the claim. Kaleta had been a real outlet on the right-hand side since his introduction and continued to prove that way as the game moved into the final 20 minutes. His low cross after being set free by Mullin very nearly picked out the late arrival of Fitzgerald into the box before Crewe once again hacked it away. Fitzgerald has looked confident beyond his tender years since joining the Millers and showed no sign of changing that attitude when he lined up a longranger on 72 minutes, which perhaps did catch Booth unawares, but couldn’t find the far corner of the goal it was intended for as it flew wide. It was almost last-gasp heartbreak for the Millers when the visitors had the ball in the back of the net, but the strike wasn’t to stand. Despite an inch perfect pass into the path of Jack Lancaster coupled with a tidy finish past Julian Eyestone, the linesman had his flag raised, bringing an abrupt end to the celebrations that had begun in the away end. Both sides continued to push for the elusive winner, but it wasn’t to be and proceedings ended level
