TACKLING SERIOUS VIOLENCE AND KNIFE CRIME The South Yorkshire Deputy Mayor will be chairing the next public Community Confidence Board in Doncaster later this month, where discussions will focus on South Yorkshire Police’s approach to reducing serious violence and knife crime, and their work with partners through a public health approach. Residents, community groups, partner organisations and stakeholders across South Yorkshire are being invited to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Doncaster Corn Exchange, Market Place, Doncaster, DN1 1LQ, on Wednesday 30 September from 5pm to 7pm. The Community Confidence Board provides a public forum
where communities can hear directly from South Yorkshire Police, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), and partner organisations. The purpose is to join in discussions, ask questions and influence decisionmaking on issues that matter most to local communities. Building on the success of the inaugural Board meeting, held in Sheffield, which focused on trust and confidence in policing, the September meeting will explore the scale and impact of serious violence across South Yorkshire, the response to knife crime, and the role that partnership working plays in preventing harm and keeping communities safe. Kilvinder Vigurs, Deputy
Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “The Mayor, Oliver Coppard, made a commitment to developing a forum where the public of South Yorkshire could ask questions relating to things that matter to them relating to police and crime. We want this conversation to reach across the county. “The next event will focus on reducing serious violence and knife crime. We know it requires more than enforcement alone. It demands a joined-up approach that brings together policing, education, health services, local authorities, community organisations and local people to understand the causes of violence and intervene early to prevent harm. “The Community
Confidence Board provides an important opportunity for residents, partners and those with lived experience to hear directly from decision-makers, ask questions and shape the conversation about how we make our communities safer. “I would encourage anyone with an interest in this issue, whether as a resident, professional, volunteer or community representative, to attend and take part in what I hope will be an open and constructive discussion.” The meeting will bring together representatives from policing, local authorities, education, health, community safety partnerships, voluntary and community organisations, youth services, and people with

10 tips to stop being scammed solar power boost for buildings sheffield 10k returns A consumer expert has warned Brits they need to be increasingly vigilant about fraud and scams after criminals stole nearly £1.3 billion through payment fraud and scams in the UK last year. Jane Hawkes has shared her advice to help people avoid falling foul of fraud which now accounts for roughly 41% of all crime against individuals. According to Citizens Advice, online shopping traps remain the most common personal scam and two-thirds of authorised scams originate online, frequently through social media platforms and digital ads. Ten tips to avoid falling foul of fraudsters. 1. Start from the company’s official website Never click on a customer service link sent to you by someone on social media, WhatsApp, email or even a complaints platform. Type the company’s web address yourself or use an app you already have. 2. Treat unsolicited ‘help’ with suspicion If you’ve posted a complaint publicly and suddenly someone contacts you saying they can resolve it, stop and check. Scammers know that people who are already frustrated with a company are particularly receptive to offers of help. 3. Check the account, not just the name or logo There’s nothing to stop someone setting up a convincing looking account with a company logo and tricking you into thinking you are finally getting somewhere with your complaint. A scammer can copy a company’s name, profile picture, branding and even verification-style imagery. 4. Never move a complaint somewhere simply because you’re asked to Be particularly cautious if someone says, “DM me,” “message us on WhatsApp,” or “contact this number and we’ll sort it out.” Don’t move platforms: Independently find the company’s official contact details and use those instead. 5. Ask who you’re actually talking to It’s perfectly reasonable to ask: “Am I speaking to a human customerservice agent or an AI assistant?” Don’t assume that because a conversation feels natural
that there’s a person at the other end. 6. Don’t mistake a convincing conversation for proof of authenticity AI can now produce remarkably plausible replies, understand context and mimic the tone of a helpful customer-service representative. Good grammar, empathy and detailed replies are no longer proof that someone is genuine. 7. Never give security information to ‘verify’ your identity A genuine company may need to establish who you are, but be extremely wary of anyone asking for passwords, one-time passcodes, PINs, full card details or banking credentials. Never read out a verification code that has just arrived on your phone because someone claiming to be customer services asks you to. 8. Check information independently If an alleged agent gives you a phone number, email address, payment link or website, don’t automatically use it. Find the company’s contact details independently and ask whether the person, case number or proposed procedure is genuine. Use a different route to verify the first route. 9. Don’t pay to get your complaint ‘unblocked’ or refunded One particularly sneaky tactic is telling consumers that a refund, compensation payment or account recovery requires a fee, deposit or ‘verification payment’. 10. Don’t download any apps to process a refund One common way scammers, particularly those operating abroad, are defrauding people is by getting them to download apps which allow you to transfer money from your bank account to an account on an app set up in your name. As soon as you’ve made the transfer, they will then change the password and take your money. Legitimate companies will not use third party apps to process refunds. Bonus Tip! You don’t have to keep responding just because someone claims to be customer services. Say you’ll contact the company through its official channel instead. A genuine customer-service team shouldn’t object to you independently verifying who you’re dealing with.
Nine community buildings across Sheffield are set to benefit from new solar panels as part of a major investment in renewable energy, helping reduce running costs, cut carbon emissions and support the city’s net zero ambitions. An additional £350,000 from Sheffield City Council’s Local Renewable Energy Fund (LREF) has been earmarked for the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at nine community buildings across the city, including libraries and community centres. The investment will support sites at Bradway Annex, Burngreave Vestry, Norfolk Park Community Centre, Firth Park Community Centre, Firth Park Library, Sharrow Lane (Grange Crescent), Verdon Street Community Resource Centre, Chapeltown Library and Tinsley Community Centre. The latest phase of work builds on previous energy efficiency improvements delivered through the programme, including the installation of LED lighting. Once complete, the solar panels will generate renewable electricity on site, reducing the buildings’ reliance on the national grid and lowering energy bills. The Local Renewable Energy Fund was established in 2022 through a £3.5 million allocation of Community Infrastructure Levy funding. The programme supports renewable energy and energy reduction projects across council-owned community hubs, helping ensure vital local facilities remain sustainable and affordable to operate. The proposed investment will increase the overall programme budget for these works to £677,031, including earlier feasibility studies and LED upgrades. As well as delivering long-term financial savings, the project will help reduce carbon emissions from council buildings and contribute to Sheffield’s wider climate commitments. The business case estimates the investment could pay for itself within six to eight years through energy savings. The project will include surveys, design work, procurement and installation of roof-mounted solar
arrays, with works delivered through the Northern Procurement Alliance framework. Once completed, the improvements will provide immediate environmental benefits while strengthening the resilience and sustainability of community facilities across Sheffield. Will Stewart of the Council said: “This investment is great news for communities across Sheffield. By installing solar panels on some of our most valued community buildings, we’re helping reduce energy costs, cutting carbon emissions and creating more sustainable spaces for residents to use and enjoy. It’s a practical step towards our net zero ambitions while ensuring community centres and libraries can continue to thrive for years to come.” And in further news from the Council, plans to bring over 200 new social rent homes to communities across Sheffield have moved a step closer, as councillors are asked to support the sale of council-owned land for affordable housing development. The proposals, due to be considered by Sheffield City Council’s Finance and Performance Policy Committee on 21 September, would see underused brownfield sites across the city sold to Housing Associations to deliver 100% affordable homes for social rent. The sale of the previously developed land at less than market value is an investment by the Council in local neighbourhoods, providing much needed affordable housing at social rent. The developments would offer a wide range of residents, including families, older people, young people and those with medical or disability-related priorities a place to live they can call their own. The sites are located in Darnall, Wincobank, Gleadless Valley, the city centre, Stocksbridge, Hollins End and Colley, helping to create new housing opportunities in communities across Sheffield. If approved, the sites can deliver over 200 social rent homes, significantly more than would typically be secured through standard open-market development.
Participants of all ages and abilities are preparing to take to the streets of Yorkshire’s Steel City as the Sheffield 10K returns on the 27th September, welcoming thousands of runners for a celebration of community, fitness and fundraising. Starting at 9.30am, entrants will begin and end their journey on Arundel Gate, following a scenic route past some of Sheffield’s most iconic landmarks, including Endcliffe Park, Bingham Park and the Botanical Gardens, before heading back into the city centre for the much-anticipated finish line. As with all Run For All events, the Sheffield 10K is expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity. The event’s official partner charities are Framework, Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Paces, Rain Rescue, Roundabout, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, Sheffield Young Carers, Sheffield Futures, St Luke’s and Sheffield Cats Shelter. Runners can also look forward to the unrivalled support for which Sheffield has become renowned. Thousands of spectators are expected to line the route, creating a vibrant atmosphere and providing encouragement from start to finish. Adding to the excitement will be the Sheffield 10K Corporate Challenge, which sees teams from local businesses compete for the title of Corporate Challenge Champions. The initiative promotes
teamwork, camaraderie and positive physical and mental wellbeing in the workplace. The popular Mini and Junior events will also return, giving younger runners the opportunity to be part of the action. Chip timing will now be included in the Junior events, adding an extra layer of excitement for participants. With places still available, people of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to sign up and be part of one of South Yorkshire’s most inspiring and inclusive running events. The operator of a regulated waste facility in Sheffield who did not have an environmental permit has been handed a 39-week suspended prison sentence. Following an investigation by the Environment Agency, Mohammed Tager, 38, of Verdon Street, Sheffield was sentenced at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on 16 September. He had previously pleaded guilty to operating a regulated facility without an environmental permit. The Court sentenced Mr Tager to 39 weeks in custody suspended for 18 months, also requiring him to undertake 180 hours of unpaid work during that time. He must also pay a victim surcharge of £187, and a £2,000 contribution towards prosecution costs. Following two successful prosecutions of Tager’s co-defendants earlier this year, the illegal waste site at the Former Stanley Works in Rutland Road, Sheffield has now been fully cleared. Ben Hocking, Area Environment Manager for the Environment Agency in Yorkshire, said: “We are glad to see Tager’s offending has been brought to justice. The case showed he had a total disregard for the law, the environment, and the local community. He repeatedly ignored warnings and notices issued by our officers, who have worked incredibly hard to take action against him along with his co-defendants who were sentenced in April. Following the sentencing of the codefendants, we were pleased to see that the site has now been fully cleared. This result shows that we will not hesitate
to take action against those who breach the law.” The Environment Agency first visited the site on 7 July 2022 and found a large amount of mixed waste to be present. The Environment Agency told the occupier he could not store waste without a permit, and on 10th October 2022, he was given six weeks to clear it. In January 2023, officers inspected the site and found none of the waste had been cleared, and in fact new waste had accumulated. The Agency subsequently served a formal notice requiring the site to be cleared by 5 June 2023. The notice was not complied with. The Environment Agency made more requests for waste to stop being brought on to the site and for it to be cleared. In late 2024 and early 2025, complaints were received about the burning of waste, and the operator was advised by Sheffield City Council to cease burning, which was impacting on local residents. The Environment Agency is stepping up its action on waste crime as part of its new 10 Point Plan - building on existing work and partnerships, the focused, sustained programme of action strengthens prevention, improves detection and delivers more consistent enforcement. In August, Prime Minister Andy Burnham set out government plans to tackle waste crime. Anyone who suspects illegal waste activity is asked to report it to the Environment Agency’s 24-hour hotline - 0800 807060 - or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
