Skyline Enterprises, a New Zealand-based sector leader in adventure tourism, is advancing plans to transform the former ski village site at Sheffield’s Parkwood Springs into a major new leisure development.
A planning application is expected later this year. Skyline said it has agreed a strategic framework with Sheffield City Council, establishing a shared commitment to unlock the long‑derelict site, which is one mile north of Sheffield city centre. The proposed development, which would bring forward a landmark visitor
destination for the city, would be delivered in multiple phases. While the final mix of attractions is still being refined, the first phase would include Skyline’s signature gravity fed downhill karting attraction (Luge), alongside a family playground, food and beverage offering, and an indoor attraction. A zipline and surf wave experience remain key elements of the site’s longer term vision, while dry ski slopes are also being explored as a potential future addition.
A public consultation on the proposals is expected to launch in September, providing
local residents, businesses and stakeholders with an opportunity to learn more about the proposals and provide feedback ahead of a planning application submission later this year. The project will also support better connections between Parkwood Springs, Neepsend and Kelham Island. It sits alongside wider investment from Sheffield City Council in the surrounding area, with a new access road, junction upgrades, and site improvements designed to support traffic flow and future visitor numbers.

This week Sheffield welcomes the British Transplant Games –one of the UK’s most inspiring sporting events.
Sheffield is proud to host thousands of transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, and supporters from across the country as they come together to celebrate the lifechanging gift of organ donation.
The Games showcase the incredible impact
of transplantation, giving people the chance to live active, healthy lives and take part in sport. They also provide an important opportunity to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage conversations that could help save lives in the future.
The British Transplant Games are the flagship project of the charity Transplant Sport and have been in existence for over 45 years when
the first “Transplant Olympics” took place in Portsmouth in 1978. At that time, these Games were an international event and included teams from France, Greece and even the USA. Since these early beginnings with competitors, affectionately known as “99 blooming miracles”, the Games have grown and are held every year in different cities throughout the UK.

mayor’s office issues latest updates on summer travel

improvements will get underway over the summer holidays, as part of a wider £110 million investment to improve the network.
The essential works will focus on replacing track, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings which are in need of renewal after over 30 years in operation
The £3.5 million of improvements this summer are part of South Yorkshire’s wider People’s Network vision – creating a better-connected public transport system that makes it easier, greener and more reliable for people to travel. Investing in Supertram is a key part of building a network that links communities to jobs, education and opportunities.
The first phase of work is now in progress and will run until Friday 7 August, where the focus will be on replacing rails near Herdings Park. During this phase, the Purple route will run a limited service between Cathedral and Gleadless Townend.
The works will then move onto the major junction of all tram routes, known as the Delta junction, which sits on Commercial Street bridge above the Park Square roundabout, near to Hyde Park and Fitzalan Square, in Sheffield city centre.
The Delta junction is of vital importance to the network with over 440 trams running across it every day, serving all lines on the network.
During this second phase of works – which will run from Saturday 8 August to Monday 31 August – the full junction will be replaced including new track, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings. Works will also take place near Hyde Park to replace the tracks as they cross Bernard Road.
Whilst Blue, Yellow, Purple and Tram Train services will continue to run, all services across the network will be subject to changes to their routes and timetables to accommodate the works.
Replacement buses will be provided to help keep people moving to those areas which cannot be served by the tram network. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
The works have been scheduled during the school summer holidays when passenger numbers
on the network are lower.

“This multi-million pound investment we’re making will create a more reliable network for all of us who depend on Supertram every day. The investment is essential if we’re going to build a tram network that is fit for the future and will serve us well in the next 30 years.
“We know carrying out this work will mean some disruption during the school holidays, and we’re grateful for everyone’s understanding while it’s completed.
“Supertram is at the heart of the South Yorkshire People’s Network that we’re building together – creating a public transport system that is more reliable, better connected and makes it easier for everyone to get to work, education and opportunities.”
From 8 August, all tram services will operate to revised routes and timetables.
Replacement buses will run between Cathedral and Granville Road for connection to the Purple and Blue routes, and between Cathedral and Woodbourn Road for the Yellow and Tram Train routes.
All valid tram and multimodal tickets will be accepted for travel on the replacement bus services. Customers can buy their ticket in advance using the TSY Mobile app, or from a tram conductor. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased from the bus driver using contactless card or cash payments when boarding.
Longer journey times are likely, particularly during peak periods.
To minimise disruption, we recommend those travelling in the area plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
Families across South Yorkshire will be able to save money this summer, with children aged 5 to 15 travelling free on participating local bus services and Supertram throughout August.
The offer, which runs from 1 to 31 August 2026, is part of the Great British Summer Savings scheme, with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority funding the extension of free travel for 5 to 15-year-olds on Supertram.
There is no registration required for the August offer, with unlimited free journeys
available for eligible children on participating services. The summer saving is designed to help families cut the cost of getting out and about during the school holidays, whether they are visiting friends and family, heading to summer activities, going to sports clubs, or enjoying days out across South Yorkshire. It also sits alongside South Yorkshire’s existing free and discounted travel offers for young people. In Barnsley, under 18year-olds can continue to benefit from free travel with a Barnsley MiCard, while young people under 21 across South Yorkshire can access cheaper fares with a Zoom Travel Pass.
Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Free public transport has changed lives for young people and families in Barnsley, and I couldn’t be prouder of that scheme. We’re now building on what we’ve started, making it happen in Sheffield and working to extend that support across South Yorkshire through our People’s Network. I’m really pleased that families right across South Yorkshire are going to get a taste over the summer holidays of what free public transport can do. We’ve gone further than the Government’s summer travel scheme by extending free travel to Supertram too, meaning children and young people under 16 can travel for free on buses and trams throughout August. Summer should be a chance for families to enjoy themselves and make the most of everything South Yorkshire has to offer. We’ll help families save money over the holidays now, while continuing our work to give every young person more freedom and access to opportunity, and every family a little more money in their pocket.”
Families can travel by bus and tram to reach parks, museums, leisure centres, libraries, events, high streets, visitor attractions and community activities across the region.

Gas pipes installed beneath Crookes, Sheffield, and surrounding roads to supply gas to the local community will soon be upgraded to continue serving future generations of Sheffield residents.

Mayor Coppard said: “Today’s announcement is a huge step in the right direction for two reasons.
“Firstly, we’re the most centralised country in the developed world, and have been for far too long. By committing to fiscal devolution, the Prime Minister is delivering on his promise to rebalance our country, allowing places like South Yorkshire to break free from control by London and the Treasury. Secondly, and even more importantly, we’ll now be able to take a long term view of investment and spending decisions. That simply hasn’t been possible up to this point. By giving us a long-term, steady funding source, we’ll have the freedom and flexibility to invest in the future, to respond to the challenges and opportunities we know best. Places like mine have had to go cap in hand to Westminster and Whitehall for far too long, but the Government is now making clear that it will be Mayors who will have the powers and resources to make the big decisions that impact our places, our communities and our economy.” And the Mayor has called on East Midlands Railway (EMR) to temporarily scrap First Class designations, opening up all carriages to passengers equally, so no one is left standing in overcrowded trains while seats remain unused. The call comes after EMR announced significant service reductions on routes linking Sheffield with the East Midlands and London, following ongoing reliability and maintenance problems impacting its train fleet. The disruption has led to cancelled services, shorter trains and increased chance of overcrowding for passengers. Although train managers do have the option to declassify first class carriages when trains are busy, the Mayor wants EMR to introduce a blanket agreement across all Intercity services, to help tackle overcrowding while the operator continues to run fewer services.
A CENTRE of excellence, focused on developing and improving the outcomes of South Yorkshire’s young people and the people who teach them, is expanding into new city premises.
South Yorkshire Teaching Hub, operated by Chorus Trust, is one of 87 national Teaching School Hubs, and centres around teacher training and development, supporting schools and empowering teaching professionals by delivering professional development at every stage of their career. The new 3,750 sqft centre opening at ARBA Group’s Meadowhall Business Park, will help bring together all the teaching expertise from over 318 schools in the region and education partners to support recruitment, training, development and retention of teachers within South Yorkshire schools.
The hub was previously based at Silverdale School, with the new larger Meadowhall Business Park offices offering greater opportunities for collaboration from state of the art offices, meeting rooms and events space. MBP will open for the new academic term in September with new job opportunities expected to be created adding to the 14-strong team. The centre of excellence will occupy the ground floor in the popular development. Emma Cooper from South Yorkshire Teaching Hub said: “We are
proud to serve the local community of Sheffield and Rotherham and this is the ideal location for us to offer and extend access to our education community, share opportunities, showcase great practice and provide training and development opportunities for all. This move is a real chance for growth with increased capacity, opportunities for events, networking and collaboration. The hub will offer support to those who want to join the teaching profession, find new, exciting roles working in the region’s schools, discover exciting opportunities regionally, further their professional development and find out more about what’s going on in teaching in the region. The new base will bring our services all under one roof in a fantastic space, in a great location with excellent transport links.” The hub’s remit is to deliver the DfE’s ‘golden thread’ of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE), and National Professional Qualifications (NPQs); be the nucleus for the community, ensuring opportunities and initiatives are shared; shine a spotlight on the amazing practice taking place in the region; act as a bridge to connect all education colleagues and partners in the region and share news, research and papers related to education.
Major work to replace nearly 800 metres of gas pipes - equivalent to around eight football pitch lengths - is scheduled to commence on Monday 27 July and will last for approximately 20 weeks. Cadent, which manages the local gas network, will be carrying out a project which will see gas mains being replaced in order to future proof the network and ready pipes for the introduction of more environmentally friendly gases, like biomethane. For the safety of engineers and residents, and to minimise disruption, the project will be completed in phases, with traffic management measures in place throughout the works. During phases where road closures are required, only one road will be closed at a time, with all work completed before moving on to the next road or junction. Each phase is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete, including backfilling excavation sites. All work within a phase will be completed before progressing to the next section of the project to help reduce the impact on residents and road users. Traffic lights will be in place and manually controlled between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Outside of these hours, the traffic management measures will be removed. With less than six weeks to go until Rock N Roll Circus returns to Sheffield, organisers have revealed fresh details of what promises to be the festival’s biggest and most exciting city edition yet.
Returning to Don Valley Bowl from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August, Bank Holiday Weekend, the award-winning event will bring together around 40 live artists and 40 circus acts, transforming the heart of South Yorkshire into one of Britain’s most distinctive destinations for live music, immersive entertainment and contemporary circus.
Now firmly established as one of Sheffield’s standout annual events, Rock N Roll Circus returns with an expanded festival experience, an upgraded VIP offering, a new GA+ area and four unforgettable days celebrating the city that helped shape its identity. At the centre of
it all is the festival’s iconic Big Top.
Rather than watching headline artists from the far reaches of a festival field, audiences experience every major performance beneath canvas, creating an atmosphere that combines the energy of an arena show with the intimacy of a theatre production.
This year’s programme opens as The Kooks perform Inside In / Inside Out in full to mark its 20th anniversary, joined by Sheffield heroes Milburn, celebrating Well, Well, Well in full, and indie favourite Miles Kane.

Across the weekend, Rock N Roll Circus continues to champion the next generation of British music with the same passion it gives established headliners.
Rock N Roll Circus’ second stage, the Discovery Stage, once again provides a platform for emerging artists from Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond, sitting alongside a packed programme of breakthrough acts performing across the festival. Artists including The Molotovs, Gurriers, Basht., Bleech 9:3, The
North, The Clause, Day We Ran, Heidi Curtis, Goo, Sundress,
and Sonni Mills underline the festival’s commitment to discovering tomorrow’s headline acts. That story continues through a new generation of musicians carrying forward some of Britain’s most celebrated musical legacies.
Festivalgoers will see Cruz Beckham and The Breakers make one of the band’s biggest festival appearances to date, while Spanish Horses, featuring guitarist Albert Cocker, son of Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, and Villanelle, fronted by Gene Gallagher, demonstrate how British guitar music continues to evolve through a new generation of artists.

weekend, with aerialists, acrobats, stilt walkers, fire performers and roaming theatrical characters ensuring the entertainment never stops between headline sets.
Returning for another year is internationally acclaimed high-wire performer Ellis Grover, who has been part of the Rock N Roll Circus family since the very beginning and now tours with Gary Barlow and Take That, while Sheffield audiences will also be treated to remarkable performances from one of the city’s own world-class unicycle artists. Towering above it all will be the festival’s spectacular life-sized mechanical elephant, roaming the site as part of an immersive circus programme that continues to blur the line between festival and theatre.
Food and drink remains another defining part of the Rock N Roll Circus experience, with organisers bringing together some
of Yorkshire’s best independent traders alongside award-winning street food from across the UK. Festivalgoers can expect everything from the legendary Yorkshire Burrito to acclaimed local favourites Unit Burger, authentic Greek Street Food, and indulgent creations from God Save The Toasties, alongside independent bars, expanded hospitality spaces and upgraded premium experiences that have become a hallmark of the festival. The Blades ended the pre-season campaign unbeaten - finishing with a draw in Germany against VfL Bochum - a twin city of Sheffield.
Boss Chris Wilder named a strong team with almost 2,000 Blades fans making the trip to North Rhine-Westphalia. Striker Patrick Bamford missed out as he has remained in Yorkshire as his partner is set to give birth.
In their own impressive arena, Bochum, who play in Germany’s second tier, made the brighter start. Miyoshi was denied by Cooper, Hoffman shot wide and Taz danced through tackles before Cooper made another save, all in the opening 15 minutes.
United’s first effort was from a Hamer pass but O’Hare’s curler was punched away by goalkeeper Horn. The remaining chances of the half dropped to the home side but Cooper again saved from Crimaldi and when he was breached, Baptiste made a block from Miyoshi.

latest uPdates On tHe Owls
In a move that comes as no great surprise, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club can confirm the departure of Iké Ugbo.
The striker has joined Cypriot top-flight side Apollon Limassol on a season-long loan. Ugbo joined the Owls, initially on loan, in January 2024. The move became permanent the following summer.
The 27-year-old has made 81 appearances for Wednesday across all competitions, scoring nine goals.
Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said: “After a difficult period, Iké asked the club to facilitate a fresh start this summer, with the objective getting back to his best for the benefit of himself and the club. We have
worked collaboratively together throughout the off season to identify the right opportunity and believe we have secured something we are all happy with. We all go into this next chapter with positivity and optimism, and wish Iké well.”
The build-up now begins for the Owls’ first competitive fixture of the new campaign.

And the Owls are delighted to announce the permanent transfer of Ashley Maynard-Brewer. The goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract at Hillsborough and arrives with significant League One experience, having made 70 third-tier appearances for Charton Athletic. Maynard-Brewer joins the Owls as a free agent having departed Scottish Premiership side Dundee United.
This follows on from news of the the signing of Mason Burstow from Premier League side Hull
City.
The 22-year-old striker joins the Owls on a season-long loan.
Burstow brings significant League One experience to Hillsborough having played a key role for Bolton Wanderers last term on loan as they achieved promotion from the third tier.
He scored 12 goals for the Trotters en route to the play-off final, where Bolton triumphed to reach the Championship.
Burstow is out to emulate that tally in S6 and anticipates an exciting year ahead.
He said: “The club is in an upward direction and I’m very happy and excited to be part of it. I’ve got a benchmark now that I’ve set from last season and I only want to improve and add more goals and
get another trophy. The gaffer is very passionate in the way he speaks and his tactical and technical analysis, and the detail, is top. It’s going to help me develop my game and add to what I achieved last year. I’ve played against Wednesday away and home and the fans are always a big voice. They always seem to out-sing everyone so I’m glad to be on the other side of it!”

Paul MullIn annOunCed FOr MIllers
Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the signing of experienced forward Paul Mullin, who has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium subject to EFL and FA ratification as well as international clearance.
The arrival of the Merseyside-born striker sees him become the sixth player to join the Millers so far during the Summer transfer window, and the second this week, following on from Tuesday’s signing of Jili Buyabu.
Mullin would spend time in the academy systems of both Everton
and Liverpool, before he made the move to fellow Yorkshire outfit Huddersfield Town’s youth sides. After impressing at both Under 18 and Under 21 level, the talismanic forward would go onto sign a one-year deal with the Terriers, although he would fail to make a firstteam appearance.
In the Summer of 2014, Mullin would find himself at Morecambe where he would go on to score his very first professional goal in his league debut for the Shrimps where he was introduced as a substitute, scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 win.
In just under three years
at the club, the energetic forward would make over 100 appearances, finding the back of the net 25 times. The next couple of years would see Mullin turn out for both Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers, before signing for Cambridge United on a six-month loan deal in January 2020. Mullin clearly impressed at the Sky Bet League Two outfit as he was awarded a permanent one-year contract the very next Summer, and it proved to be a real astute piece of business by the U’s.
On the 27th March, Mullin would score his 25th league goal of the season, a strike that saw
him break the record for the most league goals scored in a single season by a Cambridge United player, a feat that would see a stand at the Abbey Stadium renamed the “Paul Mullin stand” for the remainder of the campaign. The forward would go onto record 32 goals that season, picking up the Sky Bet League Two Golden Boot, the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Season, as well as achieving promotion to the third tier of English football. The clinical nature of Mullin was to continue once more as Wrexham returned to the Football League in the 2023/24
season, with the striker netting 24 times in the league, as well as picking up his 100th goal in a Wrexham shirt during this campaign. The fairytale story of the Red Dragons would further play out as they achieved backto-back promotions at the first time of asking, with Mullin being a real catalyst to catapulting Wrexham into Sky Bet League One. Most recently Mullin has added further EFL experience onto his CV in Sky Bet League One, with loan spells coming at both Bradford City and most recently Wigan Athletic.
