CAMPAIGN AGAINST ALCOHOL PRICE HIKE This month the Government will begin reviewing formal responses to their 10 week Alcohol Strategy Consultation, which proposes an alcohol price hike and a ban on multi-buy promotions in shops and offlicences. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has launched a campaign via www. whyshouldwepaymore. co.uk encouraging the public to speak out against the price hikes that they believe will punish the vast majority of responsible drinkers and won’t address the real causes of alcohol misuse.
New polling by ComRes on behalf of the campaign reveals that those in Yorkshire and Humberside do not believe that the proposed price hikes will be effective. The research showed that: · 68% believe that the Government’s plans to increase the price of alcohol will not reduce alcohol-related antisocial behaviour · Fewer than one in four overall (15%) support minimum unit pricing · 52% of the population claim they would feel angry at being punished for others’ irresponsible drinking · 87% of people believe that binge drinking will
continue irrespective of the plans to set higher alcohol prices · 61% believe people would take more ‘party drugs’ instead of drinking alcohol if minimum pricing was introduced The proposed 45p minimum unit price will, according to the Government’s own figures, cost consumers in England and Wales more than £1 billion pounds extra per year[1]. Research from the Centre for Economics and Business Research also shows that it will hit the poorest hardest – with the lowest 30% of earners bearing the brunt.
Miles Beale, Chief Executive of the WSTA, said: “Our campaign website www. whyshouldwepaymore. co.uk allows the public to get in touch with their local MP, through email or Twitter, to learn more and voice their opposition to minimum unit pricing. They can also sign an online petition and calculate the costs of the policy on their shopping baskets.” “Evidence shows that there is no simple link between alcohol price and harm and we do not believe that increasing the price of alcohol will effectively tackle problem drinking. The
polling out today shows that less than one in four people in Yorkshire and Humberside region support minimum unit pricing, while just over two in three people think it won’t change drink-related anti-social behaviour and almost nine in ten say it won’t stop binge drinking.” “The UK already has some of the highest alcohol prices in Europe, and given that alcohol consumption has fallen by 13% since 2004, these radical plans to increase the price of alcohol seem completely unfair, untargeted and ineffective.”
