THOUSANDS SIGN UP FOR SHEFFIELD HALF MARATHON

The snow may have been falling across Sheffield, but it hasn’t stopped more than 2,000 eager runners already signing up to take part in this year’s SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon.

The event, renowned for attracting runners from all ages, backgrounds and abilities, again promises to be one of the biggest participation events in Sheffield’s sporting calendar.

Race officials have also confirmed that the 2013 race will definitely go ahead, despite confirmation from Sheffield City Council that the closure and demolition of Don

Valley Stadium is under consideration.

Organisers of the popular race, which this year has 10,000 places up for grabs, are therefore urging runners to take part in what could be the last ever start and finish from Don Valley Stadium.

Margaret Lilley, chair of the Sheffield Half Marathon organising committee, said: “It’s great to see that more than 2,000 runners are already showing their support for the city’s oldest road race.

“We also want to reassure runners again that the race is definitely going ahead, despite the news about Don Valley Stadium.

“This could be the last chance that runners get to experience the amazing atmosphere at the stadium on race day, so we really would urge people to sign up and be a part of it. If it is our last ever race at the stadium, we want to go out with a bang before we find a new venue for 2014.”

The official charities for 2013 are: Myasthenia Gravis Association, St Luke’s Hospice, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Support Dogs, Breast Cancer Care and the Children’s Hospital Charity, Safe at Last and

the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders (SAYLS).

The SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 12 May 2013 at Don Valley Stadium at 9:00am. As well as the half marathon, the SIG Insulations Sheffield Fun

Run will also take place.

QUADROPHENIA TO ALBERT SNODGRASS THE ARENA

THE WHO, one of rock’s legendary and defining bands, has announced a UK arena tour where they’ll perform their iconic 1973 double album QUADROPHENIA in its entirety, along with a selection of WHO classics. The tour stops off at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Tuesday 18th June 2013. Tickets priced £60, £65, £70 (subject to booking fee) go on sale Friday 1st February at 9am.

This marks a welcome return to Yorkshire for the band who have performed at the Arena on two previous occasions in 2000 and 2007. Their first live album ‘Live At Leeds’ recorded at the University of Leeds in 1970 is widely regarded as one of the greatest live albums of all time.

The UK tour follows on from a hugely successful North American tour, praised by press and fans alike as probably the definitive interpretation of Quadrophenia and “a rock ‘n’ roll lover’s dream come true” (Telegram.com, Boston).

“QUADROPHENIA is their (The Who’s) boldest and most fully realized albums,” writes Rolling Stone, “but it’s never quite gotten the live show it deserves – until now”.

The critically acclaimed QUADROPHENIA marked the British band’s second rock opera (after Tommy), raised the bar for rock albums as an art form, hit #2 on the UK album chart and massively influenced the future of UK style, fashion and culture – from Paul Weller to Bradley Wiggins, from Paul Smith to Noel Gallagher. The album’s title is a variation on the popular usage of the medical diagnostic term schizophrenia and exemplifies the four varying personalities of the band members who created the album. IGN placed QUADROPHENIA at No. 1 on its list of the greatest classic rock albums of all time and Q magazine placed QUADROPHENIA on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. It features such classic WHO songs as “The Real Me,” “5:15” and “Love Reign o’er Me.” The band, founded in 1964, brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane. Each of them was a pioneer.

Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl.

The film QUADROPHENIA starred a young Sting, Phil Daniels, Ray Winstone, Trevor Laird and Lesley Ash. John Lydon (Rotten) was screen tested for a part, but the idea was dropped when insurance became an issue! QUADROPHENIA became one of the key influential, independent British movies, alongside other gritty real life films (known as ‘angry young man films’), like “Scum”, “The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner” and “Look Back In Anger”.

This new concert version of QUADROPHENIA, personally directed by Roger Daltrey, focuses on the original album and replaces the narrative used in previous stage versions with powerful imagery projected on an array of massive screens, designed to support, complement and propel the musical content of the work by setting it in the context of the history of the band. This is achieved to startling effect.

“Quadrophenia and its coming-of-age story unfolded in songs that blended nuance and noise, a spectacle grand and gritty,” writes the Orlando Sentinel.

The Who’s 8-date UK tour features founding members ROGER DALTREY and PETE TOWNSHEND, who will be joined by Zak Starkey (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Simon Townshend (guitar/backing vocals), John Corey (keyboards), Loren Gold (keyboards/backing vocals) and Frank Simes (musical director, keyboards/backing vocals).

If you practise positive magic you will receive blessings in return but witches also know that those who practice negative magic will ultimately destroy themselves.

Follow these tips to keep you and your family warm and well in extremely cold weather.

To keep warm and well during spells of cold weather: • Draw your curtains at dusk and keep your doors closed to block out draughts.

• Have regular hot drinks and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible. Eating regularly helps keep energy levels up during winter.

• Wear several light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer).

• Keep as active in your home as possible.

• Wrap up warm and wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside on cold days.

Keep your main living room at around 1821°C (65-70°F), and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F). If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep.

The Met Office has get ready for winter advice and some suggestions for practical things that you can do to prepare for winter weather, including cold, ice and snow, high winds and flooding. The advice also tells you ways of saving money.

Travel in icy weather Icy pavements and roads can be very slippery.

Take extra care if you go out and wear boots or shoes with good grip on the soles. The Met Office advises putting grit or cat litter on paths and driveways to lessen the risk of slipping. It adds that you should wait until the roads have been gritted if you’re travelling by car. The Highways Agency offers useful advice for road users on travelling in snow and freezing conditions.

Bear in mind that black ice on pavements or roads might not be clearly visible, and that compacted snow may turn to ice and become slippery.

How to find weather warnings The Met Office provide the weather forecasts for broadcasts on radio and TV, so listen in to these bulletins regularly to keep up to date with the weather. Severe weather warnings are also issued on the Met Office website, through the Met Office twitter feed, or you can ring the Weather Desk on 0870 900 0100.

How cold weather affects your health Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to cold weather.

Cold weather is especially dangerous for older people or people with serious illnesses, so check up on them if you can. Read how to spot and treat hypothermia.

People with heart or respiratory (breathing) problems may have worse symptoms during a cold spell and for several days after temperatures return to normal.

Starting on Friday 25th of January, Heeley Walk and Talk is a new, exciting three month project funded by the South Community Assembly and based at Heeley City Farm in Heeley, Sheffield.

Project leaders at the Farm are inviting Heeley residents, both past and present, to come and share their memories over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake and contribute to an Oral history project. Visitors will also get a chance to look at the community archive which has been produced by Heeley Heritage volunteers, and includes archaeological finds from digs on the Heeley City Farm site.

As well as the coffee mornings, where people can share their memories in more detail, visitors can also take part in a short, guided walk around the Heeley area with the Farm’s Health Champions and Sally Rodgers, and learn more about the history of Heeley.

Meet at 10am in front of the South Yorkshire Energy Centre (SYEC) at the Farm and if you don’t fancy a walk you’re welcome to come inside for a chat and some cake!”

The Heritage Walks take place at 10am every Friday morning between the 25th of January and the 29th March initially although they will continue into the spring.

The special Reminiscence Coffee Mornings will be running alongside the Heritage Walks on the 25th Jan, the 1st,8th & 22nd Feb and 1st March between 10 am and 12.30pm in SYEC. During February Half term there will be additional family Walk and Talk activities everyday between Monday 18th and Friday 22nd February. These will include games, activities, crafts and an archaeological finds workshop.

The project will finish with a celebration event on the 16th of March 10am to 2pm.

A Barnsley man who died in a house fire in Gawber could have been saved if his home had been properly fitted with smoke alarms, an inquest found.

The man died when fire tore through the single storey detached bungalow in May last year.

The blaze started in the kitchen and is thought to have been caused by a faulty fridge.

But fire service investigators also found a smoke alarm inside the property that tragically had not been fitted to the ceiling.

South Yorkshire Coroner Christopher Dorries, recording a narrative verdict, said: “Unfortunately, whilst there was a smoke alarm present within the property it was not appropriately fitted to a ceiling and would not have given him early warning of the smoke and fire gasses.

“It is likely that he would have had sufficient time to escape in the circumstances had the alarm been properly fitted and working.”

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Mick Mason, said: “This tragic incident is the clearest possible evidence as to why people should make sure their homes are fitted with working smoke alarms and test them regularly.”

Smoke alarms should be fitted on every level of your home, on the ceiling and ideally in the middle of a room or on a hallway or landing.

The batteries should never be taken out and alarms should be regularly tested to make sure they are working properly.

Missing a train connection needn’t be a bad thing, especially if you are meant to make your link at Doncaster.

I was recently passing through there with my colleague Karen but we missed our train to Grimsby by a few minutes.

It was dark and cold and hanging around the station for almost an hour was not an appealing prospect. Rather than stay put on the chilly platform or have yet another cup of station coffee in the same-as-everywhere-else cafe, I remembered there would be pleasant shelter nearbyDoncaster Trades Club. It’s conveniently located, after all, right next to the station in the Frenchgate shopping centre.

Dougie, in charge of the door, was still sat in his work station by the entrance and recalled my previous visit there almost two years ago. It was Tuesday, late afternoon, and many people were leaving the club. This might not look to be a good thing, with evening coming on: shouldn’t people be going in instead? Not so here as the club’s unique position in this modern shopping centre means that they can attract people for afternoon concerts and shows, often with lunch included. The club can be very busy early to mid-afternoon when shows are on with those folk weary with shopping but keen for a bit of social life and entertainment calling in.

Tuesday is a busy day and as one crowd leaves, those who have been at work all day can stop by for a pint and a chat with fellow members or game of snooker in the games room.

The club has a long history in the city but had to move, literally, with the times when the Frenchgate Centre was planned. The land was needed as part of the development but they were offered this prime location, which is also right near to the bus station as well. It’s a location that the club management seem to be making the most of and gives them an advantage over some ailing clubs that now look isolated with poor transport links. We missed a connection but found a nice warm place to spend our time and a cheering drink. Karen liked the club a lot and has now joined the ranks of club historians! We drank to the club being right there when we needed one and hope that it continues to thrive.

O’h O2 Academy, how we love you. How we would give you a rib crunching hug and sloppy wet kisses if you were a person (and we knew you. If not we would get thrown in the clanger). We digress. Easily one of the major highlights of February, Australia’s The Getaway Plan are set to perform at Sheffield’s Academy2 on 6th February, meaning we can get our shorts and shades on, making the four piece feel nice and at home right? Or not…

With their debut album, “Other Voices, Other Rooms” peaking at number one within the Australian Independent Charts back in 2008, The Getaway Plans are bringing over their fuelled up live show to the UK masses. Their punchy rock anthems and explosive vocals have ensured this Melbourne piece are a band to get excited about. Each track spits out energy in abundance, a certified characteristic of the band who fail not to deliver big with every aspect of their performance. The bands second album, “Requiem” ran much in the same way. Having been released back in 2011, the project went straight in at number two on the Australian Indie Chart and number 17 on the full Australian album charts. Granting the band a much deserved entry into the main stream masses, it’s evident how ready they now are to take over the UK. The quartet have recently released their new single “Phantoms” through Warner Bros records. Produced by the three-time Grammy winner David Bottrill (Muse, Tool, Stone Sour), ‘Phantoms’ offers a calling card for The Getaway Plan’s ambitious and anthemic alt-rock attack. When The Getaway Plan first previewed ‘Phantoms’ on their official site, their Facebook page gained 10,000 new followers in just a few days…hell if you don’t believe us, go check it out for yourself! The new single sums up all that is The Getaway Plan. It’s bold, brash and sure as hell packs a punch…all we can is we’re in for a treat when this is played live.

Exploring and discovering exciting new musicians and bands is exactly what a summer spent at festivals should all be about.

Whether you’re into rock, metal, pop, indie or drum and bass, there really is a live event set up for anybody who enjoys nothing more than exploring a weekend packed full of pure adrenaline pumped action. Live At Leeds, held over May Bank Holiday offers exactly that…an enormous slice of tuneful fun catered to anybody with an alternative taste in music, the three day weekender warmly invited you to sample their jam-packed line up…

Headlining the event and easily one of the most abstract performers to grace the current indie scene, Darwin Deez are one of the front runners within Live at Leeds. Stemming from New York City, the five piece are set to release their second studio album, “Songs For Imaginative People” on 11th February, a hugely anticipated project from NME’s Top 10 most coolest bands.

Also holding the reigns and tipping the bill, Everything Everything. Forming in late 2007, this group have gone on to become the UK’s most successful underground indie pack. Not only do they create abstract pieces with enough groove to make Stevie Wonder hot under the collar, they also smashed the charts with their latest release “Arc,” booming in at number five on the UK album charts.

With their number one single “Feel The Love” remaining the soundtrack of summer 2012 for the vast majority of party lovers across the country, Rudimental are set to offer up their one off set at Live At Leeds. This Hackney raised set of DJ’s are clearly all about the music… creating explosive remixes of some of the charts most loved anthems, the quintet will release their self-titled debut album in February. And hell if their previous singles are anything to go by, we’re all in for a damn massive treat.

Ok ok so you know all about the big names, but what about the up-and-coming performers you can sink your teeth into (not literally, biting people really isn’t socially acceptable). Widely known in Sheffield for performing a belter of a set at Tramlines, southern trio Theme Park are lined-up for the Leeds weekender. Sheffield’s The Crookes are quickly becoming the most talked about alternative groups throughout BBC Radio 1, not to mention Arlissa, Lewis Watson and the 1975.

TV is proliferated with reality shows of the worst calibre. On the top of my hit list today is Celebrity Wedding Planner, but it’s not the show, but the people who agree to feature on said trash that surprise me. After all, who in their right mind would let a celebrity plan their wedding?

It’s boggling these utter morons give the go ahead for Z listers to get their inept hands on their wedding plans - and worse - that they think it’s OK to get cross about the choices said zelebs make while fumbling their way through the process. Last week it was Amy Childs and her camp companion, Harry Derbidge donning the pre-marital helmet. Childs is a woman who makes goldfish seem intelligent. She can barely walk and chew gum at the same time.

She shouldn’t be allowed into the community, yet she’s continually on our screens, setting an appalling example for young girls everywhere and spouting her ultra vapid nonsense about whatever her pea-sized brain can cope with at the time. You get what you pay for and surely, if you let these people organise your wedding, then as you’ve paid nothing, you should expect nothing in return.

Or is that logic only evident to me?

Rylan and Speidi, I’m sure Channel 4 is positively foaming at the mouth for letting the show go. Davina hasn’t handled those kinds of numbers since she gave hand jobs to the unwashed masses…

I’m talking about when she cleaned cars for charity back before she was famous. Sheesh, you lot have such dirty minds! It’s always in the gutter with you…

I really don’t like watching shows that promote bad feeling. I want to see happy people fooling around and having a laugh, not threatening and bitching about each other, yet this year’s Celebrity Big Brother saw more than its fair share of nasty deeds, most of which were carried out by married couple, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag (Speidi). These two are among the most vile celebrities ever to feature on television: delusional, probably completely mad, and certainly off the rails, the British public lapped them up, so much so that they kept the barking mad duo (and I don’t mean that in an ‘oh, how cute is that?’ kind of way, but the ‘foaming at the mouth kind of way’, right up to the final. You simply never knew what was going on with those two, yet whatever they said or did, you could sense the quasi-malevolent undertones. They were like brainwashed members of a bizarre cult, saying one thing and meaning another.

They called the house an ‘orgy house’ (with all the hugging) yet I didn’t hear Spencer complain when Heidi showed just how ‘handy’ she could be in the bedroom…

I imagine Channel 5 producers are right now trying to work out how they can top the duo in the next series… presumably by putting a serial killer in the house - “Will Peter Sutcliffe please come to the diary room” (too much?) –- but it’s this sensationalist crap that gets viewing watching in the millions. And while so many are eager to watch this stuff, which is basically a blood sport without any physical violence, TV producers are going to continue giving us exactly what the baying public desire! Which means another decade of the same mindless trash on our screens.

With the recent spell of blizzards and freezing temperatures, it’s hardly surprising that the dark and gloomy days of winter threaten to dampen our spirits. Without a prolonged period of daily sunlight exposure, the winter blues can easily set in and one in 15 of us in the UK will suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD Syndrome) which can bring on depression, fatigue and, sometimes, a craving for carbohydrate or sweet foods and lead to weight gain.

The good news is that fresh air, green spaces and regular physical activity can help ward off depression. I’ve come to the conclusion that January, fishing and me do not mix! Last year in the same month, I managed to reverse over two of my favourite rods, then get a puncture, then have my van reversed into all on the same blank trip.....this year, I’ve had another disaster!

A trip to the lovely snow shrouded River Derwent had been planned for a few days, and after vainly trying a new stretch, I returned to a familiar haunt near Borrowash. As I approached the carp park, I was advised it was a ‘little slippy’ by the bailiff who had just had to dig his own vehicle out but regardless, I thought I would be able to position my van on a slight downward slope which would allow me to exit later on....

As I merrily angled away with my lure rod, absently searching swims for pike or perch, the weather warmed slightly; only a degree or two, but unbeknownst to me, just enough to start melting the previously hard packed snow..... A few hours later, I’d soundly blanked and unfortunately lost one of my favoured ‘firetiger’ lures in an unseen snag before decided to call it a day and return to the van.

Having packed away the tackle, I engaged first gear and proceeded to sink up to the wheel hubs in what was now just slush and soft mud!

After a frantic hour of slipping and sliding towards a large railed fence, putting a couple of dents in the van and almost ruining both tyres and clutch, it was time to admit defeat and call for help. After a quick call to the club secretary (to obtain the farmers number) a fantastic chap named Jim (club bailiff) arrived with a shovel and proceeded to spend another hour in my company digging a pair of tracks to get me back on the road. To get to the point, Jim had travelled from his home some miles away at the behest of the secretary, interrupted his dinner, helped me with some tough work and then, after I’d offered considerable recompense for both his time, effort and kindness, turned me down with a smile and best wishes! What a guy!

So, there are still gentlemen to be found on the bank; Jim, although retired, took the trouble to assist both myself and two other vehicles off the car park, then locked the gates behind us as he bid us farewell and did it only for the benefit of club members, the reputation of the club and out of the goodness of his heart... for no other reason and I’m sure Jim is a true reflection of the thousands of club committee members up and down the country who give time and effort on behalf of us anglers who are happy enough to moan and groan but contribute little apart from complaint. I’ve been on a committee, it’s a thankless task, so just this once, I thought I’d use my column to say thank you; to Jim and the thousands of others like him who make angling a real pleasure!

The Channel 4 coverage this weekend comes from Sandown, Ffos Las and Wetherby, with four races from Sandown, two from Ffos Las and one from Wetherby scheduled to be shown. Just a note of caution however – once again several intended participants are entered in more than one race so check carefully on the day for your selections’ engagements.

Sandown: 1.50 Betfred “The Home of Goals Galore” Handicap Chase, Class 2, 5yo+, 0-145, 2m: There are five last time out winners in this field with four of them seeking hat tricks. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Rody was the one of these one to do best by my clock last time, followed

by Changing Times and then Dunowen Point.

However, Paul Nicholls may have the answer to this puzzle with the relatively lightly raced Toubab. A 13 length second to Sprinter Sacre at Aintree last term was followed by a third place to the unbeaten chaser William’s Wishes on his opening run of this season. That form looks pretty decent in the light of what those two have achieved. Others to take the eye in a goodlooking contest are: Pigeon Island; Keki Buku; Eastlake; Falcon Island; and King Edmund.

2.25 Betfred Mobile Lotto Challengers Novices’ Chase (Registered as Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase), Grade 1, 5yo+, 2m 4f 110yds: Based purely on the time he recorded last time out a chance is taken here on Colin Tizzard’s Third Intention who may set off at a decent price, given the other entries in this field. Nicky Henderson’s Captain Conan has looked every inch a chaser to follow in his first two chases.

However, the defeat of Hinterland the other day has slightly taken the gloss of his last win and he may start at an unreasonably short price, given his connections. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Changing Times has my best overall rating and is also seeking a hat trick. He is however entered in the previous race. Lucinda Russell’s Tap Night is also chasing a three-timer (and is unexposed over fences) and Houblon des Obeaux is no back number but looks destined to run in the 3.20 at Wetherby.

3.00 Betfred “The Bonus King” and Levy Board Heroes Handicap Hurdle, Grade 3, 4yo+, 2m 6f: Luke Dace’s American Spin beat Philip Hobbs’ Pateese by two lengths at Haydock last May but Pateese is now two pounds better off with that rival so, at these weights, there may be nothing between them here. Consigliere reverts to hurdling having won a chase last time out in a decent time. Others to record speed ratings last time out were: San Telm; Shotgun Paddy; Prima Porta; and Arkose. However, with American Spin looking a bit flat so far this term and with Pateese having joint top rating and being well clear on last time out figures the selection has to go to him.

3.35 Betfred Masters Handicap Chase, Class 2, 5yo+, 3m 110yds: In the light of his exploits at what seems to be his favourite track, Haydock, I have slight reservations about Cannington Brook going this way round particularly with the topography of this track being so different from that of Haydock. However he recorded the best last time out figure of these when winning there and that just about merits his selection in my book.

Roberto Goldback’s Hennessy run also merits much respect but he seems a bit flat to me last time out. The selection may therefore be given most to do by Duke of Lucca, Cappa Bleu, Keppols Hill, Brackloon High, Dashing George and Mister Hyde.

Ffos Las: 2.05 William Hill Welsh Champion Hurdle, (Limited Handicap), Class 2, 4yo+, 2m 4f: My overall top rated animal in this race is Double Ross, followed closely by El Dancer, Any Given Day, Peckhamecho, Timesawastin and Miss Milborne and any one of these could spring back to peak form in an open and competitive race.

However, recently I have been selecting those that have done best last time out and so, based purely on his last time out performance, The Romford Pele gets a narrow vote to land his hat trick.

Nevertheless, with two other hat trick seekers (Trop Fort and Tanerko Emery) and another last

time out winner (Oscara Dara) in the field, not to mention the above highly rated runners, he may not find things too easy. In addition to these Sametegal, Prima Porta and Constant Contact all recorded ratings in my system in their last runs and could go well.

2.40 William Hill West Wales National (Handicap Chase), Class 2, 5yo+, 3m 4f: Red Rocco and Shaking Hands are both chasing hat tricks and should run well but there are a few others with good chances also. Arbor Supreme, Our Island and Incentivise finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the Welsh National at Chepstow and that form may well hold up here. Cannington Brook is another with a live chance at a track that may quite suit his style of running. Top weight Junior isn’t out of this by any means, nor is Ballabriggs, and Cappa Bleu should not be overlooked either. An intriguing and competitive race looks assured with the final selection falling on Arbor Supreme, who should go well with only a feather weight to carry.

Wetherby: 3.20 Totepool.com Towton Novices’ Chase, Grade 2, 5yo+, 3m 1f: Yet another field with multiple last time out scorers is assembled here. Sue Smith has three entries in Fill the Power, Yurok and Vintage Star. She also has the two that recorded the best speed ratings last time out in Fill the Power and Vintage Star. It is Vintage Star who gets the nod having won easily last time out by 28 lengths from a decent yardstick in King’s Grace, who was himself 20 lengths ahead of the third horse Hollins that day. This might turn out to be pretty fair form. Of the others Goulanes looks an obvious danger and won for this column at Cheltenham in November. Also looking dangerous are: Houblon des Obeaux (this looks to be his intended engagement from a handful); Red Rocco; Real Milan; Fourjacks; Buddy Bolero; and Super Duty.

Last week’s results: With racing abandoned at Doncaster there was only the Cheltenham meeting where there were selections. Sprinter Sacre duly won in his own inimitable fashion. Four of the reserves ran in the Argento Chase at 2.25, with the selection falling on Grands Crus. He was pulled up along with Weird Al but the other two fought out the finish with Cape Tribulation (7/1) just out-battling Imperial Commander (7/2) to the line in a titanic struggle – a superb end to a really good race.

In the 3.00 race At Fishers Cross beat The New One by a neck after the pair pulled well clear of Coneygree. This could be a race to follow as the others had decent form in the book. Finally Knockara Beau ran a really good race only to be found wanting at the end but this could also be a benchmark race for the World Hurdle as Reve de Sivola is beginning to look like a true contender for that crown in the absence of Big Buck’s.

After non runners the eventual selections were: Cheltenham: 1.50 Sprinter Sacre – won @ 1/5 2.25 Grands Crus - pulled up (5/2) 3.00 The New One – 2nd @ 4/5 3.35 Knockara Beau – 4th @ 25/1 With no bet recommended in Sprinter Sacre’s race the financial outcome was a three point loss to one point level stakes.

FUNDING NEEDED ROVERS PLAY EVANS GUTTED ROTHERHAM

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans was once again left ruing individual errors that saw his side slump to a 3-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers. The Millers, who were 1-0 down midway through the first half due to a Lee Brown penalty, were reduced to 10 men just before the break. In the second period Ellis Harrison doubled the lead and Joe Anyinsah sealed the game for the Pirates.

“We didn’t play at all did we,” said Millers boss Steve Evans. “At the end of the day we can’t make the individual errors we did and then expect to get a result. No team at any level can justify those mistakes as individuals and in this league as it has proved with Bristol Rovers, or any team a head start it’s very difficult. We don’t just give a goal to them, we give them three goals. They’re all total individual errors.”

The Millers enjoyed plenty of possession in the first-half, but were unable to break down John Ward’s resolute backline, frustrating the Millers boss despite signs of encouragement in the second period.

“I think the stats show they had four efforts on goal and scored three. They looked much better than us at times, but one thing we did do is that we got a performance out of them in the second half in terms of grit and effort. We get going again and then another individual error came in,” Evans added.

A slight positive from the game saw David Noble return to the side after three and a half months out of action and scored a stunning goal within minutes of coming on the pitch.

“Well I think it signifies how we played today by saying David Noble has come on and played well. David Noble is a top player and we miss him when he’s not in the team and we’ve been fighting to get David back to fitness,” the Millers boss concluded.

TO LEAVE

Jason Taylor has had his contract terminated by mutual consent, and will be joining Cheltenham Town.

The midfielder, 26, has agreed terms with the Robins this afternoon following a medical, signing a two-and-a-half year deal with the Whaddon Road club.

Following Taylor’s departure manager Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk: “It would be fair to say that we have a number of outstanding central midfield players but the permanent capture of Lee Frecklington, and the return from injury by David Noble allows me to let Jason to move onto pastures new.

“The lad has been excellent for me and the Millers, but given the options we now have his match time was going to be limited and the player himself wants to play regular first-team football. The decision made for him to move on suits both parties.

“I have a gentlemen’s agreement with Mark Yates at Cheltenham Town that the player will not participate against us when we travel to the south west later in the season.”

Doncaster born athlete Craig McCann who featured at the 2012 London Paralympic games, has returned home to train at the Keepmoat stadium.

The Team GB Fencer hopes he can fulfil his ambition and working towards the medals table at the next Olympics, after a fairly unsuccessful time in London for the fencing team.

However, the team have had funding cut and without outside help, McCann will not be able to make it to Rio. “We desperately need private donations to help us along the way. We (McCann and fellow Olympian Gemma Collis) are looking at needing around about £1000 a competition for both of us and double that for others.”

Collis, who was also present, said: “If we can’t get the support we need in order to get to the international competitions, we just can’t qualify.

“You qualify through the world rankings and without entering in the international’s we can’t get the points to get there”.

The team finished eighth at the games, which is something McCann was disappointed with.

“In terms of personal results we did nowhere near as well as we should, but it was the team’s first time at the games so it is all about getting the experience.

Although being disappointed, McCann does believe in himself and the team and that they can do much better in four years should they compete.

“It was very fast to get here over two years.

I wanted to do rowing, but to spend the year building up to London as Britain’s number one and the experience of this summer, will hopefully help get us on the medals table.”

Rovers, as part of Club Doncaster have let both McCann and Collis use the facilities at the Keepmoat at no cost which enables them to train off-season.

“We’re really fortunate to be able to train here at the stadium, without having to worry about getting even more funding to cover that.

“The facilities are perfect for what we want to do, and help us with everything we need.”

Rovers Travelled to Manchester United’s Carrington Training Ground.

Rovers’ players and management travelled today over to Manchester United’s Carrington training ground this week to take on a strong reserve side.

Brian Flynn had looked to get a game with the team not playing last Saturday due to MK Dons still being in the FA Cup. With Bury coming next Saturday it was important to get all the lads a competitive run out especially Martin Woods coming back from injury. Rovers lost 2-1 with a good individual goal from Kyle Bennett.

It was good experience for the young lads Johnny Maxted and Liam Wakefield, who both had good games. Martin Woods got 50 minutes under his belt and came through alright plus Kyle scored a good individual goal from the edge of the box”.

United’s journey in cup competitions this season is over after Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round defeat at Reading.

The margin of victory is harsh on the Blades who, for periods, put the Premiership side on the back foot, with Jamie Murphy going close on a couple of occasions.

Chris Porter and Neill Collins returned from injury for Danny Wilson, who will take a number of positives from the encounter at the Madejski Stadium.

Porter returned to United’s starting line up for the tie, replacing Flynn, who dropped to the bench and was joined by the fit-again Collins. Reading were captained by ex Blade Leigertwood. The return of Porter saw him partnered with ex Royal Kitson in attack, with Murphy and Blackman the support from the flanks.

There was little to report before the third minute when everyone inside the Madejski - including Messrs McDermott and Wilson - rose to their feet and applauded in appreciation of the efforts of former Blades and Reading defender Chris Armstrong, who had to retire from the game early. The committed full-back wore the number 3 shirt at both clubs.

However, it was just the home fans cheering on six minutes when Reading took the lead. Robson-Kanu delivered a cross from the left and HUNT outjumped Westlake to head across Long and into the net.

McMahon curled a free-kick over in response and the Blades went close to levelling on 18 minutes. McDonald’s ball to Blackman wide on the right was perfect and the latter danced around his marker and passed across goal where Maguire got a slight touch but the ball rolled just wide of the post.

After Reading’s opener, United saw a lot of the ball. Blackman was prominent, McDonald tried his luck from distance on a couple of occasions, whilst another McMahon free-kick was deflected wide. On 33 minutes, the visitors created another

good chance, on this occasion Murphy was prominent and swung in a cross for Porter to head just wide.

United’s attempts to level continued. Porter flicked on for Kitson to find Murphy, whose shot was straight at Federici, and then Blackman almost got on the end of a searching McDonald pass.

However, the good work was ruined on 40 minutes when Reading added a second. Long pushed away a Le Fondre shot but the young goalkeeper could do little when LEIGERTWOOD stepped inside Doyle and fired into the top corner from 20 yards.

The Blades trudged off at the break but their endeavours did not deserve a twogoal disadvantage and at the start of the second period it was visitors who were quickly on the offensive, challenging from a Blackman corner and crosses from Higginbotham and Murphy.

But fortune was with the home side, that was obvious with the third goal on 50 minutes. After escaping Maguire, HUNT connected with McCleary’s cross with a scuffed effort that got the better of Long.

It became four soon after, this time McCLEARY was the finisher, turning inside Westlake on United’s left before picking his spot in the opposite corner. Between the third and fourth goals, Kitson volleyed over for the Blades.

Flynn replaced Porter with Blackman moving to a central role, whilst just after the hour goalkeeper Federici had to push away a shot from McDonald. From the subsequent corner, Maguire and Doyle were involved in a melee before Kitson laid off to Murphy, who saw his shot beat Federici but Kelly kicked off the line.

Youth was given a chance on 69 minutes when Whitehouse replaced McDonald, soon after Collins returned to the action, wearing a protective mask, taking over from Westlake with Higginbotham moving out to left back.

The Blades went close to pulling a goal back when Flynn was free to meet a Blackman cross but the header was just wide. It would have been a consolation

and the least the visitors deserved but home side took their place in the fifth round draw after an uneventful closing spell.

Danny Wilson was delighted to see influential defender Neill Collins return to action at The Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

After a month on the sidelines following surgery on a triple fracture to his cheekbone on Boxing Day, Collins played the last 14 minutes of the 4-0 defeat against Reading, sporting a protective face mask.

Wilson commented: “It was a massive plus to get Neill (Collins) back into the thick of the action.

“He is a lad desperate to play and you saw with him wearing the mask, which he has gone through to make himself available earlier than expected.

“With a bit of luck now, the weather is clearing we will get a full week on the training ground and he should be raring to go come Friday night.”

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s interest in Nick Blackman is common knowledge, but Wilson, who reserved a special word for the recently departed Danny Philliskirk, says he is unsure on Blackman’s long-term future.

The Gaffer concluded: “It is business as normal with regards to Nick (Blackman).

I would obviously like to keep him, but if he does move on we must act quickly to replace him. Let’s just see what happens as the week progresses.

“Danny (Philliskirk) has struggled to force his way into the reckoning, so given the expectation level at this club we felt it was best for both parties if he moved on.

“He is a great young professional and that is why we wanted to help him move his career forward.”

Kevin McCabe remains confident the Blades will seal a return to the Championship this season, despite a disappointing run of results in January.

Speaking prior to Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Reading, the owner emphasised the Blades find themselves restricted in the transfer market as all clubs in League One and Two do, but insists strengthening the playing squad remains priority.

McCabe said: “I don’t see as much as Danny (Wilson) as I should with living on the continent but we had a good heart-toheart at the weekend and everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction.

“The financial situation is challenging because Sheffield United, for one, aren’t used to this Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP). Every time you look to bring a player in you have to be mindful that you aren’t going to break the limit.

“It is the biggest puzzle ever. I am naturally instinctive and last January I made the decision to let Danny bring in Will Hoskins.”

Although the Blades are currently fifth in the table, eight points off second place, McCabe is convinced the Blades will produce the goods to seal promotion back to England’s second tier.

He concluded: “I expect us, like the fans do, to be at the top, but I am sure we will get there in the next three months or so. Unfortunately we have been cursed with injuries to several key players and that has been frustrating for everyone connected with the club.

“We aren’t kidding ourselves, though, we know we need to get promoted this season and that is why we are going to recruit before Thursday’s deadline.”

A remarkable late comeback at The Valley saw the Owls come from one goal down to win 2-1 on Saturday.

Johnnie Jackson’s early second half strike looked to be sending the Owls home empty-handed but Reda Johnson levelled late to seemingly rescue a point.

But Leroy Lita, who was making his first Owls appearance, netted a last minute winner to turn the game on its head as Wednesday posted three valuable Championship points.

There was a place in the starting line up for debutant Danny Pugh who penned a loan deal at Hillsborough until the end of the season earlier in the week.

With both sides keen to keep up their good run of form, there was an early edge to the contest, highlighted by a firm Giles Coke challenge on Dale Stephens that saw the midfielder pick up an early yellow card.

Wednesday were first to pose a meaningful threat on goal after 20 minutes when Pugh picked out an unmarked Antony Gardner from a corner but the defender’s header was cleared off the line by Cedric Evina.

The Addicks, though, had a golden chance to take the lead through ex-Owl Michael Morrison ten minutes before the break.

Matt Taylor headed back into the danger zone for Morrison, who launched himself at the ball from six yards out – only to see his effort cannon back off the crossbar.

Owls boss Dave Jones then introduced loan recruit Lita into the action on 55 minutes as Wednesday looked to up the ante in the final third.

Jermaine Johnson sent a low arrowed drive wide after a pacey burst down the middle before Lita tested Hamer with a firm low strike that the Addicks keeper managed to push away from danger.

The width of the upright was all that prevented Wagstaff from strengthening Charlton’s grip on the game just past the hour.

Leroy Lita has nailed his temporary colours to the mast in pledging to do all in his power to aid the Owls’ climb from the Championship relegation zone.

The prolific marksman snatched a late winner on his debut at Charlton and in doing so duly lived up to his pre-match billing after his loan switch from Swansea on Friday.

The travelling triumph – Wednesday’s fourth win in five on the road – saw Dave Jones’ side leapfrog Ipswich in the table and pull six points clear of third-bottom Peterborough.

Lita said: “I’ve come here to hopefully score some goals for the team and push us up the table.

“The gaffer’s not told me to come here and play and create lots of chances, he wants me to put the ball in the back of the net.

“It’s always good to score a goal on your debut. But the most important thing was the three points.

“We put in a good shift, we kept at it right until the end and the boys got the reward they deserved.

“It’s important to take one game at a time, the Charlton game was a huge win but now we have a game against one of the toughest teams in the division against Brighton.”

More conversant with plying his trade at the opposite end of the table, Lita is nevertheless relishing the prospect of aiding the Owls’ bid for survival.

The 28-year-old is in S6 for the rest of the season and remains confident that he can help make a difference.

He added: “It’s a challenge for me to come here and score goals and help the team. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a relegation battle.

“I’m here to try and chip in with the goals, and that’s what I intend to do.

“Whether I’ve been playing or not, I’ve never lost my confidence.

“I know how passionate the Sheffield Wednesday supporters are. This is a good club and they want to be going in the right direction.”

Dave Jones praised the energy levels of his players after a stunning late double at The Valley saw the Owls post a memorable win.

Strikes at the last from Reda Johnson and debutant loanee Leroy Lita overturned Johnnie Jackson’s opener for Charlton as the visitors reaped the reward for an impressive display in the capital.

Jones said: “I’m pleased as much as anything else with the energy and drive that the players showed towards the end of the game.

“It shows the commitment that they have and the spirit around the place.

“We would all have been really disappointed had we not taken anything from the game because we thoroughly deserved it.

“I was pleased for the new lads – we only met up with them at the hotel on Friday night – they have settled in well and shown their quality.

“Leroy has scored goals all his career and it was a scruffy one but he won’t be too concerned about that.

“The good strikers get the scruffy goals and he is certainly a good striker.

“Danny has played that role for a long time, in the Premiership and the Championship, he knows it inside out.”

The win at The Valley takes Wednesday six points clear of the drop zone but Jones is focused only on the progress of his team and the club.

He added: “The table will take care of itself so long as we keep doing the right things and picking up the points.

“I know everyone wants it now, and I understand that, but this football club has come a long way in a short space of time.

“I have said all along that this is a work in progress. We have a tremendous camaraderie at the football club, the players are a great group to work with, now we need to keep these good things going.”
