FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR YORKSHIRE UNPLUGGED M.V. MOBILITY At the end of last month the Yorkshire Unplugged competition judges sat in a darkened room to sift through hundreds of applications from hopeful acoustic acts. As time moves on the room fills with stale smoke, dirty mugs and empty packets of crisps or whatever else can be consumed to keep concentration and stamina high each mildly starved judge (high on caffeine, excitement, and an eagerness to eat a decent meal) puts forward the argument for their favourite act to perform in this year’s competition. Competition organiser and judge Sam Wherrett states “Considering this is the inaugural year of the competition we’ve been inundated with top

quality entries. Each act had its own unique style and qualities making this a very hard decision indeed. We would like to encourage all those who did not make it into the live heats to persevere with their music careers. With a little more practice, experience, and maybe a little bit of fortune next year’s competition could be theirs. We would also like to wish the very best of luck to those who have made it through to the live heat stages of the competition. You truly are one of the best of the best and we look forward to seeing you perform at what is set to be a series of fantastic heats.” The competition is being held at the Forum Café Bar on Division Street. The first heat will take

place on Thursday 15th March and will feature an eclectic range of artists from across the region including (in no particular order) ‘Alex Young’, ‘Steph Stephenson’, the finger-picked poetry of ‘Captives On The Carousel’, ‘Harry David’, and ‘Jack & Asher’. The second heat will take place a week later and feature up and coming acts including ‘Andrew Tregoning’, Alternative acoustic York based band ‘Climbing Trees’, ‘Joe Banfi’, percussive blues duo the ‘Don Barrel Gents’, West Yorkshire based anti-folk band ‘Old Man Pie’, and a stripped back set from Sheffield Indie rock band The Twin Bears. The third heat is made up of singer-songwriter

‘Martin Goldsack’; Barnsley based performers ‘Liberty Train’; ‘Matt Longden’; ‘Jodi’; story telling; finger clicking, folk band, ‘The Savoy Ballroom’; and alternative folk band ‘Ichabod’. Competing in heat four (the penultimate heat) Martin Plock, Leeds based student RIZ, Sheffield’s acoustic hip-hop blend ‘Spit N String’, Adam Pond, Joni Tuson, & Chris Welburn. The last heat before the final (heat five) will include Zapp Brannigan, Tom Prendergast, Chelsea Alice Scott, Mark Nicholas, Bardford acoustic pop folk band JonPaul Palombo, and finally, Hull based alternative acoustic rock band ‘Compass’. After looking at the

confirmed line-ups coorganiser Sam Middleton stated “There is no clear winner. On any given night, any of the acts could make it through to the final. There is clearly plenty of talent in the region competing for one huge prize. This year’s competition is going to be bigger and better than we had ever thought.” Prizes include the chance to sign the competitions prestigious ‘Golden Guitar’, a promotional photoshoot with Charlie Barker Photography, £1000 of recording time courtesy of Dan Worrall Recording, and a main stage slot at Limetree Music and Arts Festival.
