The four organisations are forming the “City Football Alliance”, which will be chaired by the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA and will formalise a relationship that will see the main deliverers of football working together strategically across the city.

Chief Executive James Hope-Gill, said “this is a fantastic opportunity for the whole of the game to benefit as we work together both to develop the game as well as using

the power of football to make a difference in the community. Football is not only a great game to play and to watch, it can also be a force for good which brings communities together, improves health, provides coaching and volunteering opportunities for local people and provides positive activities for our young people. The new City Football Alliance is a great opportunity to bring together the main parties involved in football to help maximise the benefits of the game for boys and girls and for adults of all ages.”

Consultation has already

taken place with various agencies and has shown that football can make a positive contribution to key aims of organisations such as the police, primary health trusts and schools.

Both professional football clubs in the City do a tremendous amount of work in the community and the “City Football Alliance” will allow this work to be more strategic for the city as better coordination of the work takes place meaning that resources can be better used as any duplication of work will be avoided.

This week, I am afraid, I have to commence proceedings with a massive moan. I refer to the events surrounding the proposed referendum, wanted by more than two thirds of the population, regarding our continued links with the European Union. Whether or not we should, or should not break with Europe is not the issue, although my views on the subject are well known, it is the bullying tactics of all the parties, by their use of the party whips, to enforce their members to vote against it that really gets my goat. The eighty one Tory rebels who defied the government are to be admired, in particular aide Adam Holloway, who resigned his position on a matter of principle, that being that he was not prepared to go back on a promise he made to the people who elected him in the first place. He quite rightly says that he did not stand for parliament to cede powers from Westminster to remote officials who are beyond democratic control, but wanted decisions to be taken closer to the people they affect and not to Brussels.

He made those opinions very clear at the last general election, and was elected on that basis. His principles would not allow him to go back on his word to his constituents, on the basis that patriotism is putting your countries interests before your own. It is a great pity that every politician, from whichever party they represent do not have the same morality. The Euro is near to collapse, and the International Monetary Fund is prepared to step in to boost the Eurozone bailout fund. As Britain is a major contributor to this, it will be left to the British taxpayers to foot the bill for the countries in the Eurozone who have proved incapable of managing their own financial affairs. It is high time for this country to stand on its own two feet, administer laws domestically, and not from the Strasbourg court, close the doors to all, and get on with the serious business of putting our own country back to where it used to be.

My table at the Mercury Awards evening at Crookes Club was a bit like celebrity squares, with the oldest working comedian Bobby Dennis accompanied by his very talented daughter Caroline, who has appeared in Hi De Hi, toured

with Laughter in the Rain, the story of Neil Sedaka, and is kept busy entertaining on the cruise ships. Also on my table were Roy and Jackie Toaduff, winners of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Diana Edwards, who is Agnetha in top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, as well as being half of top duo Agnetha and Frida, as well as being a prolific solo artiste, the legendary Glen Dale, lead singer with top sixties band The Fortunes who was with his son David, who is a very good singer in his own right. Top disc jockey, Gary Sinclair, soon to open his own bar in Sheffield and the lovely Sunny Daye, the artiste’s artiste made this table a pleasure to be on.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mercury for giving me the opportunity to invite my nearest and dearest to this fabulous evening of entertainment, and also the wonderful surprise of getting Catherine Cooper to dedicate my favourite song, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, to me. Catherine made a fabulous job with this song, looked very beautiful, and it is no surprise to me that she is having a very successful solo career.

The evening’s entertainment was superb, and was well hosted by Stephanie King and Gary Phillips, both multi award winners. Apart from Catherine Cooper and top comedian Jimmy Carol, all the award winners were new to me. I imagine that the evening will be well reported elsewhere in this newspaper and I shall therefore be brief in my comments.

A visitor to the graveyard couldn’t help noticing a man kneeling in front of a gravestone, clasping his hands and sobbing. The visitor went a bit closer and could hear what the man was saying. ‘Why did you have to die?’ he was repeating, ‘Why did you have to die?’ Feeling he ought to do something, the visitor laid his hand on the man’s shoulder. ‘Was it someone you loved very much?’ he asked gently.

The man looked up at him and said, ‘no, I never met him, he was my wife’s first husband.’

Puss in Boots This Shrek spinoff stars, oh, do I really need to spell it out? The clue’s in the title! A full review coming soon, but if you like Shrek, then this will be a must see movie on its release on December 9th.

Absolutely Fabulous Edwina and Patsy are back in a trio of specials due to be shown over Christmas and the new year. But, will the drunken duo still sparkle after being away from our screens for so long?

MCFLY LAUNCH BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION TO FIND TOUR SUPPORT ACTS

Mcfly have launched a Battle of the Bands competition to choose the opening act on each of the 26 dates of their new March/April 2012 tour.

This tour will go to all corners of the UK and will go on sale on Saturday 26th November from www.livenation.co.uk The Battle of The Bands has been inspired by the annual competition run by US travelling Festival ‘Warped Tour’. McFly will pick the winners for each of the 26 dates from the top 50 bands voted for by fans.The huge competition that will be hosted on the band’s official website www.mcfly.com.

Haunted Britain Britain is reputed to be the most haunted country in the world!We are all intrigued by ghosts and spirits and with that comes hauntings! Maybe these stories are tongue in cheek but to the people who experience them they are very real!

The smugglers of old are a fascinating subject. In one particular tale smugglers were playing cards in Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire. In walked a man dressed in black wearing a cloak that covered his feet. The tavern owner was a sea captain who became suspicious of this new fellow and dropped his cards to look at his feet. What he saw scared him to death -the person had cloved feet - the Devil himself! They made a swift exit that night.

the man, who found shelter at an Inn. The Inn keeper told him `you are a very lucky man to have survived.` Sadly the man died ten days later from a heart attack.

Carbrook Hall John Bright was the previous owner of Carbrook Hall. The ghost occasionally roams the hall and has been seen on many occasions.

The Old Queens Head on Pond Street Now i do know this pub is haunted because I have seen the ghost myself. The pub was built in 1400 and has had many alterations, no doubt confusing this particular ghost. I needed the toilet when I visited the pub, and as I walked in a man stood in front of me.

When I told the landlady thereWW was a man loitering around the toilets she said “Oh, its only the ghost!”

Boots the Chemist in Fargate Strange it may be, but apparently Boots the Chemist in Fargate is haunted! The ghost manifests itself as a man in a top hat, dark coat and cape, carrying a cane. (He sounds a bit like a Goth to me!). He uses the lift, walks across the floor and out through a wall. So next time I am in Boots I will make a note of looking for him!

Bagdale Hall in Whitby There is a headless ghost that roams Bagdale Hall, believed to be previous owner Brown Bushell (1609-1651) a traitor and a turncoat.

He was beheaded for piracy and treason in 1651. Apparently Brown Bushell has been seen walking up and down the stairs headless by a maid. In another incident a chef working More ghost stories next week! at Bagdale became concerned that noone was psychicglynis@talktalk.net serving the old fellow in the dining room. He Mob: 07811632353 described the gentleman and it was indeed Brown Bushell - this time with his head on.

The Barguest - The Black Dog The Barguest is a massive black dog that haunts the moors looking for victims. Such spectral dogs are said to exist in other areas.

It is said anyone who sees the barguest will die, as theses creatures are an omen of death. .A man walking in Egton Bridge in North Yorkshire came across the evil Barguest - the hound let out a tremendous howl and chased

CITY MARKS HOW TO KEEP DATES FOR HONOUR FOR THE WARM AND WELL YOUR DIARY WOMEN OF STEEL IN COLD WEATHER ‘Right not Charity’ Sheffield is to pay honour to its Women of Steel.

In recognition of the women of Sheffield who served their city and country by working in the steel industry and factories during World War I and World War II, Sheffield City Council will unveil a commemorative plaque on Saturday, 5 November at 2:45pm.

The plaque will be unveiled by four of the Women of Steel, a female apprentice from Sheffield’s steel industry, the Lord Mayor and Leader of the Council, representing women in Sheffield’s industry and life in the past present and future.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: “The plaque unveiling is just part of our plans to pay our city’s Women of Steel the respect and honour that they deserve.

Their valiant efforts were a crucial part of the contribution Sheffield’s industry made to the war effort in both world wars.

“We are keen that both the plaque and the statue are seen not just as a memorial to a remarkable group of women but an inspiration for the future and hope people will join us in the celebrations.”

The plaque unveiling will take place from 2:45pm on Saturday 5 November at Barkers Pool, and will be followed by a free Tea Dance in the Winter Garden from 3:30pm until 5:30pm.

The council is also working on a longer term project for a Women of Steel statue. Following consultation with a group of the Women of Steel, their preference is for a figurative statue, probably made of bronze, in the city centre.

The long term project has an ambitious target of November 2012 for completion. The Council has committed £28K so far with a fundraising target for a further £120K. Sheffield fundraising expert David Heugh is working with the council to help secure the additional funding.

The first stage of the fundraising campaign will be focused on raising money from local businesses, and charitable trusts and foundations. A public fundraising campaign will be launched next year once the artist’s design is finalised.

The Council will appoint an artist before Christmas who will work with the Women of Steel and the wider public to produce a model for the work by the end of April 2012.

• Wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days.

Keep your main living room at around 18-21°C (64-70°F), and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F). If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before you go to sleep.

Icy conditions Icy pavements and roads can be very slippery.

Take extra care if you go out and wear boots or shoes with good grip on the soles. The Met Office advises putting grit or cat litter on paths and driveways to lessen the risk of slipping. It adds that you should wait until the roads have been gritted if you’re travelling by car.

Bear in mind that black ice on pavements or roads might not be clearly visible, and that compacted snow may turn to ice and become slippery.

Cold weather is especially dangerous for older people or people with serious illnesses, so check up on them if you can.

People with heart or respiratory (breathing) problems may have worse symptoms during a cold spell and for several days after temperatures return to normal.

Sheffield Silver Surfers Back to School at High Storrs It’s back to school for some former High Storrs students and Sheffield learners, as free IT taster sessions come to the school this November.

The innovative scheme, run in collaboration with UK Online Centres, will see youngsters sharing their IT knowledge with elderly learners from the local community.

This initiative is part of Go On Sheffield, which asks members of the public to give an hour of their time to learn new IT skills that could help transform their lives. Youngsters will have a chance to develop skills such as active listening and helping and guiding learners. They will be supported by teachers and UK Online Centre staff.

Janet Wright, Head of Faculty for Maths, Computing and Enterprise, said: ‘Here at High Storrs we are really excited about this project, which will see our students sharing their skills with members of the community who are new to IT. We are really looking forward to welcoming our ‘guest students’.

WHY USE A SOLICITOR IN COMMUNITY CARE DISPUTES? 1. 4. Using a solicitor shows you are serious Local authorities can be very slow in dealing with complaints. A complainant who has hired a Solicitor is showing that they are serious and won’t be fobbed off.

The votes had been counted; the winners had been announced; and on Thursday a packed crowd filled Crookes Club to celebrate the Mercury Awards 2011 – and what a fantastic night we were treated to!

With so many first time winners, it was always going to be a real treat – as it turned out, it was a night to remember for both the audience and the acts themselves, as each and every performance justified the readers’ choice in each category. Many people ask how we decide what each performer does – the answer is that we simply ask the acts themselves to pick their favourite songs and enjoy themselves!

No Clubland Awards ceremony would be complete without Steph King and Gary Philips as the hosts, and they opened the show with a real swing, duetting with a brilliant troup of young dancers from Steph’s own Stage Show.

Next up was young Amelia Davies – voted Best Newcomer of 2011. Amelia was extremely nervous before going on stage – but she really had no need to be.

She blasted out a short set of her favourite numbers with a stage presence that truly belied her age and experience, and left to a well-deserved standing ovation.

Jimmy Carol was yet again clubland’s choice as best comedian – and ten minutes of his usual irreverent humour demonstrated why readers perennially vote him as Best Comedy Act of 2011. Slick, polished, mixing old and new material together – he is a consummate professional and continues to perform at a level head and shoulders above the rest of his peers.

Most clubgoers will be familiar with the Best female Vocalist of 2011, Bev Brookes. Constantly in demand on the circuit, it was only fitting that both her talent and her hard work should be finally be recognised by receiving the ultimate accolade from our readers, and a trio of upbeat numbers were duly delivered in Bev’s own livewire style.

Closing the first half were young girl group Halo – voted Best Vocal Group of 2011. Again these girls have a presence which belies their young age. Despite the lack of a sound check (due to technical issues!) they were quickly into their stride, with four superb numbers which allowed each of the girls in turn to take on the lead vocals and prove that they have superb voices individually as well as together.

It was unfortunate that our original guest, Harry Gration, was unable to present the awards as planned due to his recent illness. However we are indebted to Radio Sheffield’s Howard Pressman, who stepped in at short notice to make the presentations along with our category sponsors. All at the Mercury send Harry our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Recipients this year of the Lifetime Achievement Award were Dronfield couple Roy and Jackie Toaduff, Clubland legends and international stars, who never forgot their South Yorkshire Clubland roots and would always return from wherever they were in the world to ensure they were able to perform noon and night on Christmas Day at Crookes Club! As it turned out, there was an unexpected personal touch from Howard as he made the presentation – the Pressman family spent several weeks as

guests of the Chantry Hotel in Dronfield – Roy and Jackie’s home for many years – and he was able to recount some personal stories which gave the audience an insight into the lives of these great entertainers.

Opening the second half, we were proud to introduce yet another graduate of the Steph King Academy, eighteen year old Catherine Cooper, who gave a special performance dedicated to our long-time columnist Howard Copley of his favourite song, and the song which won her the “Stars of the Future” Competition – “The first time ever I saw your face.” We are delighted to report that, for once, Howard was lost for words.

Next up was Best Tribute Act 2011 Davy Nicholls, only the second winner of this category which we introduced in 2010 to reflect the new trend. His Michael Buble show demonstrated his superb vocal ranges and his love of swing, as he delivered renditions of some top classics that had the audience swinging along.

Elli Gent is your choice as 2011 Best All Round Entertainer, and this Pontefract lass only had time for two songs, as the flow of comedy in between the numbers demonstrated why she has become such a crowd favourite this year. Genuinely funny and with a great voice (not many female vocalists can do justice to a big Meatloaf number!) you must catch her act when she performs in your club!

Best Male Vocalist 2011 saw yet another young performer up on stage. Tristan Drew was our readers’ ultimate choice in what is always one of the most fiercely contested categories, and Tristan had to see off the challenge of a record number of nominees to land the prize. Not many acts are working harder at the moment – his name appears without fail in the Clubland adverts virtually every week, and his excellent set rounded off a great night for the Al Crossland Agency, who landed four award winners this year!

Closing the show were CoAst – Best Live Band 2011. We must add our own personal thanks to these lads who helped the show run smoothly by offering the use of their PA for the evening, and especially Mini – who spent all night on the sound desk to ensure we heard the best of the acts. These lads are unashamed rockers, and they filled the dance floor in rousing fashion with a selection of great rock classics, ensuring that everyone went home having enjoyed a night to remember.

All in all a great show, and many regular attendees commented that it had been the best show for years!

PPL DEBATE KEEPS RUNNING PPL’s decision to extend the consultation period on plans for huge fee rises in its Specially Featured Entertainment (SFE) tariff has been welcomed by those in the trade threatened with rises of up to 4000% in the cost of DJ nights at their venues.

Early responses have persuaded PPL to write to its users with a view to entering a “further substantial period of dialogue with all sections of the industry before any conclusions are reached” and that, other than inflationlinked rises, there will be no

implementation of new tariffs until January 2013 at the earliest.

The worry however is that at this stage, PPL has given no indication as to whether they are reconsidering their position on this matter.

Radio Nightingale is a registered charity and each week we hold at least one collection to raise funds for the station. This is in the foyer of the Rotherham General Hospital on Monday evenings between 6.00pm and 8.30pm.

The visitors to the hospital are extremely generous and we’re really pleased with the contribution this makes towards our ongoing running costs. However it is only a part of the money we need to deliver the station so we are looking to expand into a Thursday evening but don’t have enough volunteers for this session. If you could offer any time, preferably on a regular basis (that could be just one evening per month), to help Radio Nightingale in these collections it would be very much appreciated.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes there is nothing better than treating yourself when you’ve finished work for a couple of days.

Judging on the queues at my local fish and chip shop I think there are a number of people who do exactly what I do on a Friday night to see in the weekend. Last week I opened the lines for your suggestions for ‘fish and chip’ themed songs.

We had lots of suggestions from ‘It’s Getting Batter’ from Mama Cass to ‘Cod Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys.

I just spent a very pleasant weekend in Vienna, taking in some of the sights along with visiting some very old and quite grand cafés. That’s very nice, you might say but what has that got to do with clubs and their history? Surely Vienna is famous for its coffee and pastries, Mozart, Strauss, waltzes and the Danube which are al a far cry from our humble clubs.

But it’s not such a far cry, especially when taking a step back in history which readers know I am fond of doing!

Vienna at the crossroads of the 20th century was a city brimming with culture of al sorts, still one of the capitals of the huge but failing AustroHungarian Empire, and buzzing with life as old met the new, East met West. The rich and those aspiring to the higher echelons of society frequented the famous Viennese cafés which were part of its vibrant cultural life. Are you still finding it hard to make a link to clubs? These cafes had many similarities to clubs even if their clientele were much more well-to-do than our working class miners, steelworkers and weavers. The rich Viennese men enjoyed their games such as billiards, dominoes and cards just as much as ‘our’ men did even though miles and cultures apart. They were also partial to some entertainment. In the pursuit of these activities, they were like working class men in England in their in preferring the all-male camaraderie. In comparative terms, Vienna’s fin de siecle café society exhibited similar trends and ambiguities towards women. They were allowed in the cafes only as employees or entertainers though some did run cafés. They were not strictly speaking membersonly institutions but certain cafés did like to restrict who made use of them and some had artistic and political leanings.

Clubs also did in the early days, providing spaces for political debate as did the Viennese cafés. Coffee may have been the preferred drink rather than a pint of beer but there was alcohol available and in many ways, the cafés acted like clubs where the billiard table may take pride of place. It strikes me that when you look around the world, the differences are harder to find than the similarities and forming some sort of club appears as a common human trait, whether in a grand old café or a not so beautiful building over here.

Ok ok so hold your horses...nothing as of yet is confirmed, but from what we’ve heard, it’s worth getting excited for...big style. Sheffield’s ‘space invaders’ Mercury Rising are set to storm the steel cities music scene with their unique taste of powerful electronic verses rhythmic synths, resulting in a one-off sound for the three piece.

With their brand new EP release now set in motion, the sky really is the limit for passionate trio.

‘We’re all about four main things,’ explains lead vocalist Steve Edwards, former lead vocalist of The Lords of Flatbrush, Sheffield’s own experimental group who found fame on a national level. ‘Faith, love, betrayal and death...our album is the violence of colour where worlds collide.’ This is a band who quite clearly believe in their product and...let’s be honest...who are we to argue? Driven, focused and sure as hell in the know about where to directly pitch their acquired sound, Mercury Rising are clearly all about the music, which they all believe will go far. ‘We believe in what we’ve written, what we do and hope people will also get it.’

An album set to be released in the new year, Mercury Rising are to bring their eclectic live show to the Harley on Saturday 12th November, which will see the trio preview their newly produced demos. A venue which has hosted the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Toddla T, The XX and Anna Calvi to name but a few, The Harley boasts to be one of the city’s best music venues with an ‘eclectic array of music to feast your ear on!’ Regular hosts of Sheffield’s premium club night to go in collaboration with Harley Live, the live musical aspect of the venue, monthly Dubcentral, X Ray horse and Club Utopia are all resident events within the popular boozer.

Love him, hate him, or let’s be honest, not really have much of an opinion on him, DJ Producer and music extraordinaire Skrillex has announced dates for the UK leg of his first ever world tour which will hit our shores from November of this year.

Famed for working with huge names within the music industry, Skrillex is all over everyone’s lips at the minute, currently at the forefront of the world’s hugely dominant dubstep movement. A show definitely not to be missed if you’re a dance floor fan, Skrillex will be performing at Sheffield’s Leadmill on 28th November.

Not restricting himself to stereotypes or genre conventions, Sonny Moore aka Skrillex has worked with acts across the entire spectrum, allowing America’s biggest breakthrough artist to have a portfolio more versatile than the little black dress. Having produced and mixed for the likes of Lady Gaga, La Roux through to Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizons, Skrillex has moved on to release his first independent EP ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ which has seen the DJ gain international superstardom. Released in conjunction with electronic legend Deadmau5, Skrillex’s debut release dominated beatport, the world’s largest dance floor online community and epicentre for all things electro. Snatching the number one spot in the online chart, eight of the songs also broke into the highly sought after top ten, a first for such a powerful dubstep movement.

Along with smashing dance floors, club scenes and raves around the world on an almost over nightly turn, Skrillex also brought his infamous live show to London’s Victoria Park last week, where he played to over 25,000 thousand spectators. Primary support to fellow dubstepper Deadmau5, this saw Skrillex projected onto the mainstream masses, enabling the young star to stamp his own individual mark on the viewing masses.

Along with this, Skrillex also performed at this year’s Creamfield’s along with the UK Global Gathering Festival, rounding off a hugely successful career for the frontrunner in dub and electro.

Commenting on his upcoming tour, Skrillex voiced his excitement and anticipation for such a huge prospect which lay ahead. ‘This is going to be an incredible tour, I wanted a diverse line-up and I wanted to showcase great music, great people and great times!’ Joining Skrillex as support on the UK leg of his world tour included Flux Pavillion and KOAN Sound.

After last week’s T&G show, this week it was back to normal and a few hours of fishing...I’ve been in fairly regular contact with the editorial team at Coarse Angling Today magazine who have, in turn, been in contact with Pallatrax who back me in my fishing. The magazine have been after new content and are looking to feature other companies, hence I have been tasked with an article for the publication......

I’m not overly keen on ‘fishing to order’; I always have an element of self doubt if I’m under pressure, but this week went swimmingly for a change! I visited one of my favourite Staffordshire day ticket venues, Baden Hall, to try and put something together; finding a subject is the most difficult part for me, once I’ve decided , I’ve got some focus, but thinking something up is tough sometimes!

I chose to write about fishing ‘the method’ which, if I’m honest, has probably been done to death, but, to make it different, I didn’t use a method feeder. I used a Pallatrax Stonze instead, which allows me to wrap a stiff ground bait mix around it and leaves me without a manmade artificial lump of plastic or lead in the middle of my feed. The Stonze come in a variety of sizes, and, as I was fishing for match sized carp, I chose to use a Back Stonze which is far smaller than the usual Stonze and is really designed to work like a back lead and pin down the mainline behind your rig. In this instance though, I used it because I felt it would create less disturbance when it hit the water and wouldn’t overfeed the fish...

The Old Match Pool has a good head of fish between 2-8lbs with some belting barbel as well which can cause trouble if you don’t tackle up accordingly; with this in mind, 8lbs mainline and 6lbs hook link with a size 14 hook completed the rig which was baited with two ‘squabs’, a new bait from Pallatrax which is a 10mm anti eject hook bait to give fish something different to deal with. My chosen swim had an island margin at about 50 yards range, a sunken plateau and 4 feet of water in front of me.

The stonze was loaded with an appropriate method mix, the hook bait buried within and the whole lot was cast towards the island; time to sit and wait....

I didn’t have that long to wait though;- after just a couple of minutes, the tip was twitching and bouncing all over the place as hungry carp attacked the bait, and, when the first one found the hook bait, it almost ripped the rod off the rest! Not a big fish at just 4lbs, but a very encouraging start. The action continued with a series of carp to around 5lbs, but after four hours fishing, I’d amassed around 65-70lbs of plump carp and had plenty to write about, so I was happy; don’t you love it when a plan comes together???

This Saturday is the last day of the 2011 Flat season which closes with the traditional Doncaster meeting of the November handicap. Over the sticks the season is just getting into top gear and Wincanton hosts the Badger Ales Trophy meeting which includes the Elite Hurdle(a Grade 2 limited handicap), the Rising Stars Novices Chase (also Grade 2) and the Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase (a Listed race). Over in Ireland Down Royal puts on the Grade 1 JN Wine Chase which always attracts a top class field. Also this Friday and Saturday is the Breeders’ Cup from Churchill Downs.

I shall start with the Down Royal Grade 1 JN Wine Chase which is at 2.20 on Saturday: Quito de la Roque is currently a worthy ante-post favourite at a best priced 5/2. He has won his last four on the bounce, including a Grade 1 14 length beating of Western Charmer at the Punchestown Festival. He could well continue that sequence here but may find that he has his work cut out to do so with some strong opposition to beat. I like Neil Mulholland’s Midnight Chase (13/2 best price)

who had a great season last time culminating in a fifth place in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Champion Chaser Sizing Europe (currently 6/1) is stepping up in distance again after a fortunate victory last time when Rubi Light (currently 10/3) had his measure over two and a half miles at Gowran Park only to fall at the last and present the race to Sizing Europe.

Sizing Europe looks up against it here over this distance but Rubi Light re-opposes here and could go well again so should not be lightly dismissed. In that race at Gowran Park Coolcashin (current best price 33/1) finished one and three-quarter lengths second to Sizing Europe and may not be out of this at a big price. However, the one I like best of all is Jessie Harrington’s tough 3 mile chaser Bostons Angel who already has three Grade 1 chases to his name and won the RSA Chase at Cheltenham in March. He is currently on offer at a best priced 4/1 and may not be shorter on the day so hold your bets until then.

At Wincanton only the Elite Hurdle and the Badger Ales Trophy are to be shown live.

2.45 Elite Hurdle: Paul Nicholls’ previous winner Celestial Halo looks sure to go close but has significant opposition in Grandouet, Overturn and Oldrik. Of these three I am siding with Overturn who will love this track and being out in front. He is a difficult animal to get past on his day and should take all the beating. Of the rest Numide might go well at big odds and warrants an each way saver.

3.20 Badger Ales Trophy Handicap: Jeremy Scott’s Gone to Lunch is the selection, having won here by eight lengths over three and a half miles last time out. He should lack nothing in fitness, comes from a stable that is going well at present and has a Grade 2 Novice Chase on his CV to boot. Intac, who finished second to the selection last time may be the one to chase him home although others with reasonable chances are: Meanus Dandy; Qulinton; The Minack; Hello Bud; Madison du Berlais and Nudge and Nurdle.

If the Grade 2 Rising Stars Novices Chase were to be shown on TV it may pay to have a close look at Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Mad Moose who could be good value to defeat Petito and Silviniaco Conti.

At Doncaster there are four races due to be televised: 2.00 Betfred The Bonus King Handicap, 7 furlongs, Class 2.

In a tightly –knit affair the vote goes to last time out course and distance winner Mia’s Boy who may be able to follow up. He will not have it all his own way however with Valery Borzov, Kiwi Bay, Cheveton, Docofthebay and Beckermet providing some pretty stern opposition (among others).

2.35 Betfred Goals Galore EBF “Sir Percy” Gillies Fillies’ Stakes, 10 furlongs, Listed, Class 2: My choice here is Sir Henry Cecil’s hat-trick seeking top weight, Principal Role. Of the opposition I am most fearful of Lucy Wadham’s All Analena, George Margarson’s Starkat and Mark Johnston’s Oceanway while several of the recent winners in the field cannot be ruled out either.

A winner last time out at Nottingham where he beat Absinthe quite impressively by three and a half lengths, staying on well, he should find this test just about ideal. Jockey Gary Bartley takes off a handy 3lb into the bargain. The Betchworth Kid usually runs well at this venue but his style of running doesn’t appeal as he has to come through horse late on and therefore needs lots of luck in running. One that does appeal however is Enroller who could be ready to strike. He is my biggest danger to the selection and is “saver” material. Finally, if Mark

MILLERS NEWS 2011/12 STILL NO WIN AT HOME MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United made it three draws in succession with a 1-1 draw at Northampton Town today. Gareth Evans gave the visitors the best possible start, but an own-goal midway through the first-half left the game all square.

Andy Scott made just one change to the side that drew at Morecambe on Tuesday night by recalling Logan in place of Andy Warrington.

The Millers got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after just 73 seconds. Danny Schofield capitalised on a loose pass to find Alex Revell who headed into the path of Evans to smash home his sixth goal of the season.

Michael Jacobs fired across goal on 13 minutes for the home side as they looked to get back in the game, but nobody could get on the end of it. This was followed moments later by a header well wide from Kevin Langmead and a shot that flew high over the bar by Michael Jacobs. Despite starting the game confidently, they suffered a blow on 25 minutes. Adebayo Akinfenwa broke from midfield before playing in the impressive Lewis Young on the right. His low cross was then spilled by the ‘keeper, who despite his best efforts couldn’t prevent the ball from crossing the line.

It was a double blow for the Millers as moments later, Michael Raynes had to be stretchered off following an awkward fall in the centre of the field. However, Luke Foster took to the field, and the Millers were immediately in the ascendancy; Danny Harrison’s curling effort was kept out by Sam Walker after good work by Revell on the left.

Clearly high on confidence from his two goals last week, Lewis Grabban shot early from Revell’s through ball, forcing the ‘keeper to push it away low to his right. Harrison eventually collected the follow-up but couldn’t get his shot on target.The final chance of the half almost resulted in a ricochet putting the home side in front. Jason Taylor did well to block the cross but his clearance cannoned off the head of Jacobs and bounced just wide of the Millers goal. Rotherham tested the busy Walker once again four minutes into the second half, when Schofield tried his luck with a free-kick, 25 yards out that was saved well by the Cobblers stopper. Moments later, Harley and Mullins combined from a free-kick, and when the latter headed into the path of Schofield, Ben Tozer had to be alert to clear for a corner. Harley once again took the resulting set-piece and Harrison’s excellent header had to be cleared off the line by new signing Derek Niven.

An excellent run by substitute Chris Holroyd created a crossing opportunity but when Evans’ cut-back found Foster on the edge of the area his connection wasn’t clean and the ball spun wide. The home side’s standout player from the first-half Jacobs was in the action again as the clock ticked over to the 83rd minute. With one touch and an impressive turn of pace, he rounded Logan and tried to slide home from the angle, only to be denied by the retreating Foster.

With three minutes remaining, Logan was on hand once again to tip over the bar Niven’s drive from the edge of the area following a fine run down the left by Chris Arthur.

The Rovers made changes to the team that started against Portsmouth. Shelton Martis, Richard Naylor and James Hayter came in for Sam Hird, John Oster and Billy Sharp.

The Rovers got the game going and won a corner in the fourth minute but this came to nothing. Minutes later Barnes put in a good cross from the right to give Bennett a hesader from ten yards but the keeper saved. Then Sullivan put a clearance from the left of his goal straight to Jutkiewicz who headed back to the empty goal but Sullivan got back to make the save. In the 19th minute, a corner to the Rovers was placed by Stock to the far post where it skimmed off the top of Barnes head and wide. Five minutes later and Bennett hit a low shot from 25yards that Murphy, going down to his right, saved at the foot of the post. Then a great run down the Rovers left brought a corner to the Rovers but it came to nought.

The visitors were trying hard at this stage to get their game going. On the half hour a well worked corner to the Rovers had Stock crossing to the far post where Naylor got in a good header but Murphy saved under the bar. From this the visitors attacked down their right culminating in CLINGAN trying his luck from 30 yards with a tremendous shot high into the far corner of the net in the 31st minute. Coventry now had their tails up and two minutes later Baker received from a corner on the left and from the edge of the penalty area hit a fierce drive that Sullivan had to leap and tip over the bar. the second half and he was straight into the action with a fine run to the byline and a low cross to the near post caused problems for the Coventry defence before they cleared. Then a corner to the Rovers was cleasred and minutes later a Coventry corner was cleasred. A good run by Bennett ended with him firing over the bar from 25yards in the 53rd minute. The Rovers then pressed hard, First a corner brought no reward then a good build-up down the Rovers right finished with Bennett firing wide from the edge of the penalty area. As the hour mark came up another great build-up down the Rovers right led to Coppinger chipping to the middle for HAYTER to sweep the ball into the net and equalise the score.

The Rovers were now well in the game but in the 69th minute Christie got forward and hit a cracker from 30yards that went just wide of the far post.

Straight to the other end where Stock fired wide from 25 yards. Then Keogh broke down the right for Coventry before crossing low to the middle but nobody got a touch. An attack by the Rovers foundered in the 79th minute and a quick break

by Coventry put them two against Naylor, who managed to hold them up until the Rovers defence regrouped although Jutkiewicz eventually got a shot in but Sullivan saved. Back came the Rovers to gain a corner which produced another break out of defence for the visitors as Keogh went down their right. He was held up before giving the ball to McDonald who shot straight at Sullivan. The Rovers won a free kick in the 85th minute about 30 yards out, which Gillett hit so well that the keeper got the barest touch to tip over the bar. Four minutes of added time failed to bring a winner for either side.

Gary Megson was delighted with his side’s performance as the Owls returned to winning ways on Saturday at Wycombe Wanderers.

Goals from Jose Semedo and Ryan Lowe overcame the home side as Wednesday kept the heat on top two Charlton and Huddersfield, both of whom also posted three points.

The afternoon was marred only for Megson by referee Chris Sarginson sending the Owls boss to the stands, seemingly for dissent.

Megson said: “I am delighted because I thought that was a terrific performance. We have scored twice, “I was talking recently to one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen and he said if you don’t have the passion, then who will? So I don’t think I can change now.”

Megson was full of praise for strike duo Chris O’Grady and Ryan Lowe, who played together for the first time since joining the club this season.

The manager added: “Ryan is a really good player and Chris is really starting to show what he can do as well. Ryan has got his goal, he’s sharp and has played really well.

“Chris struggled to get into the game in the first ten minutes but for the next 80 he was terrific.

“I also thought Clinton did well when he came on and when Gary Madine comes back we will have four quality strikers and that’s what we need because we are Sheffield Wednesday.”

FRUSTRATION FOR BLADES IN EIGHT GOAL THRILLER MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

On Halloween weekend, scary defending contributed to an eight-goal thriller at Bramall Lane.United came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 and then 4-3 in an entertaining fixture against Exeter City.

Matt Phillips added two more to his Blades tally, whilst Billy Clarke and Matt Lowton were also on target for the Blades, against the Grecians who came into the fixture on the back of successive victories.

Boss Wilson named an unchanged team after the midweek success over MK Dons.

There was just one amendment to the bench where the fit-again Porter replaced Flynn. Exeter, after their win at Walsall on Tuesday, also started with the same team.

Unsurprisingly, United continued with the 4-4-2 formation in front of teenage goalkeeper Long but the home side was forced to kick towards the Kop in the first half. United saw a lot of early possession, without penetrating, and the visitors, with their first attack, won a corner off Collins but Archibald-Henville headed over. The Blades failed to heed the warning and the visitors did take the lead with the very next attack. From a hopeful punt, Williams had ample opportunity to clear but was attempting to shepherd the ball back to Long when NARDIELLO nipped in and was presented with the easiest of tap ins to open the scoring. Clarke fired wide as United looked to respond immediately, whilst Phillips was looking lively down the right flank. However, it was the visitors who went close to a second with a stinging long-ranger from Dunne, which Long gathered at the second attempt with Nardiello looking to convert the rebound.

A 25-yard free-kick from Clarke was on target but saved by Krysiak and disaster struck once more on 23 minutes as Exeter added a second. United’s defence backed off and NOBLE took the invitation to shoot from 20 yards, although his effort did take a big deflection to beat Long.

From Lowton’s cross, Phillips had a shot blocked as United looked for a way back into the game, but the visitors went close to adding a third when Maguire and Lowton failed to make challenges and Long was forced to parry away from Sercombe.

Late in the half, however, United forced the visitors back continually. From Maguire’s run, a Phillips shot needed turning around the post by Krysiak, whilst crosses were pinged in by Quinn and Lowton.

Golbourne must have considered himself lucky to be still on the pitch after ramming his head into Quinn but his team-mates were not so fortunate as United pulled a goal-back as the referee’s watch ticked around to 45 minutes. Clarke knocked the ball wide and from a cross by Williams, PHILLIPS found the target, although there appeared to be a major deflection off Archibald-Henville. The one-minute of added time saw the Blades searching for a leveller but Cresswell was unable to turn

Cresswell was also the first to have a notable effort in the second half but he headed on to the roof of the net from Quinn’s free-kick. Exeter were forced into an early change but the Blades were well on top and Clarke, sneaking in amongst two defenders, headed over from a cross

by Phillips. Twice in less than 60 seconds the Blades were denied by the athleticism of Krysiak. The visiting goalkeeper clawed the ball away from Coles, who was attempting to clear a Quinn cross and then, from the resulting corner, Krysiak dived low to his right to push away a header by Collins, which was destined for the bottom corner. It was the referee’s turn to save Exeter next. Clarke’s through ball down the left channel saw Archibald-Henville slip and pull down Evans, who had just been introduced. The offence looked to be inside the penalty area, but Mr Coote gave United a free-kick on the edge of the box and showed a yellow card to the defender.

From the set-piece, Evans hammered the ball against the backside of Sercombe.

Lowton headed wide and Evans had a shot blocked as the intense pressure continued.

It appeared that a leveller was imminent and it arrived on 65 minutes. Montgomery found Phillips on the left, he laid off to Williams and from the resulting cross, CLARKE turned the ball home, through the legs of Krysiak. The Grecians were reeling and went behind five minutes later, just after an Evans shot was deflected wide

by Archibald-Henville. From the resulting corner, Quinn’s delivery saw Maguire head down and LOWTON was ideally placed to touch home from close range.

Evans fired another long-range effort wide before United made a double substitution, just as the game entered the final ten minutes - Doyle and Porter introduced for the tiring McDonald and Clarke. However, just a minute later, Exeter were back in the game. From a United corner, the visitors counter-attacked and from Nardiello’s cross, O’FLYNN cushioned header beat Long, although there was a suspicion of offside. The entertainment continued with United regaining the lead with the next attack. Maguire’s pass was headed down

by Evans and after Porter stepped aside, PHILLIPS produced a composed finish, drilling into the bottom corner to make it 4-3. The lead, though, lasted a minute.

DUNNE raced onto a through ball and coolly slotted past the advancing Long.

Supporters of both sides were struggling to draw breath and were still digesting the goals when four minutes of added time was announced United looked nervous at the back, whilst Quinn floated in a couple of crosses, but there was not to be any further late drama as both sides picked up a point.

Manager Danny Wilson was dismayed after seeing his Blades team only share the spoils in an eight goal thriller at Bramall Lane.

“You can’t really legislate for individual mistakes, we had showed great resilience to get back into the game after going two down. We didn’t reach the tempo early on that we wanted or needed to be at for a game like that,” explained the manager. In a game which left supporters breathless as goals came thick and fast, Danny talked about his side’s second half improvement.

He said: “In the first half we didn’t do enough to hurt them, but the second half was different. We got in behind them and attacked well down the sides.

We scored good goals, which we were pleased with and then we needed to shut up shop. “We got ourselves in some really poor starting positions on the goals we conceded in the second half and that in itself is very annoying,” said Wilson. The Blades manager wasn’t willing to blame luck for the draw but couldn’t help notice the rub not going with his team at times. “Two of their goals were deflections and we thought crikey is this not going to be our day.” Not looking for excuses though, Wilson was forthright in his views on what cost his team two points in the drawn game.“We didn’t defend as well as we did on Tuesday night and that was a big difference. When you score four at home you should win the game. The draw for the first round of the F.A. Cup sponsored by Budweiser has been made. The Blades have been drawn to play at home against Oxford United. The game will be played over the weekend of 12th November at Bramall Lane.

It is a game that will see former United defender Chris Wilder return to to the Lane with his Oxford United side who are currently in fourth place in League Two. Chris Wilder played as a full back over one hundred times during his career with United.

Sheffield United’s fans have been allocated just under 2000 tickets for the local derby with neighbours Chesterfield at the B2Net Stadium on Saturday 26th November.

A full house is expected for the first league clash between the clubs in many years. Tickets went on sale on Monday 31st october, with allocatio based on Loyalty Points - check the website www.sufc.co.uk for details of sale.

In addition, United have announced a range of corporate packages which include lunch and coach travel to the stadium, and prices start from £75 + VAT. Full details are availabe from the Commercial Department.

Tickets are also now on sale for the Jonhstones Paint Trophy Round 3 match at Bramall Lane against Bradford on November 8th. Prices for the game start from just £8 for adults, although not all areas of the ground will be open for this game.
