SHEFFIELD NAMED AS ONE OF THE WORLDʼS TOP SPORTING CITIES Sheffield is in distinguished company this week, as it is announced as one of the finalists in the International Sports Events Management (ISEM) Awards Sports City category. Sheffield has been pitched against some large global cities in a final shortlist which also includes Shenzen, China; Melbourne, Australia; Dubai, UAE; Dusseldorf, Germany; and UK cities Manchester and London. The Awards take place

next week. Councillor Helen MirfinBoukouris, Cabinet Member for Business, Jobs and Growth at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is fantastic news for Sheffield and is a real testament to the hard work that Sheffield City Council, Marketing Sheffield its city partners, Welcome to Yorkshire and UK Sport put into establishing this city on the global sporting map. For Sheffield to appear alongside these massive international names is

a real achievement and clearly demonstrates that this work is paying off.” The ISEM Awards are the industry’s flagship Awards and honour sports event management industry leaders through the acknowledgment of outstanding performance and service excellence in the organising of major sports events. The black tie awards evening will recognise and reward companies and individuals for their work over the last year. 2011 has seen the

biggest programme of sporting events that Sheffield has ever seen with a value to the local economy of over £8 million which is further recognition that the sport, leisure and tourism sectors are some of the keys to unlocking growth and wealth for the region. The 2011 programme includes eight world championships or world level events, three European level championship events, twenty national championships, and

four mass participation events with more than 25,000 participants. The city has also signed up many international Olympic and Paralympic teams to hold preGames training camps in Sheffield over the coming year in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The camps will bring in over £250,000 to the city’s economy. Councillor MirfinBoukouris continued: “Sheffield has world class sports facilities

and is becoming internationally renowned for its ability to deliver large scale events which is clear from our fantastic 2011 programme. We’re also delighted to be welcoming elite sportspeople from all over the globe to hold their pre-Games training camps in the city. Therefore, we are proud to be in the running for such a great accolade in the run up to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.”
