who was given an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list at the weekend. Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Sylvia Dunkley said: “Jessica will be a wonderful addition to the city’s ‘walk of fame’. She is a great ambassador for the city across the world and is an ideal role model for young people, not just in Sheffield, but nationally. “There were many very worthy nominations for this year’s honour, but she truly deserves to become a Sheffield Legend, as one of the greatest athletes of

her generation.” Jessica will be inducted into the walk of fame in a ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor and Leader of the Council, Councillor Julie Dore, outside the Town Hall on Monday (20 June) at 12.15pm. After progressing through junior and youth competitions, Jessica hit the international headlines in her first senior championships for the English team in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she was a surprise bronze medal winner in the heptathlon. Jessica is now a double

Outdoor and Indoor World Champion after winning the Gold medals in Berlin and Doha. She became World Outdoor Heptathlon Champion at Berlin 2009 and World Indoor Pentathlon Champion at Doha 2010 - setting a new pentathlon championship record with 4,937 points. Last year Jessica became European Heptathlon Champion in Barcelona with 6,823 points – scoring a new personal best and new championship record. Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

‘Big Jimmy, an extraordinarily handsome man decided he had the responsibility to marry the perfect woman so they could produce beautiful children beyond compare. With that as his mission he began searching for the perfect woman. Shortly there after he met a farmer who had three stunning, gorgeous daughters that positively took his breath away. So he explained his mission to the farmer, asking for permission to marry one of them. The farmer simply replied, ‘They’re lookin’ to get married,so you came to the right place. Look ‘em over and pick the one you want.’ Jimmy dated the first daughter. The next day the farmer asked for the man’s opinion. ‘Well,’ said Jimmy, ‘she’s just a weeeeee bit, not that you can hardly notice...pigeon-toed.’ The farmer nodded and suggested Jimmy date one of the other girls; so Jimmy went out with the second daughter. The next day, the farmer again asked how things went.‘Well,’Jimmy replied, ‘she’s just a weeeeee bit, not that you can hardly tell...cross-eyed.’ The farmer nodded and suggested he date the third girl to see if things might be better. So he did. The next morning Jimmy rushed in exclaiming,’She’s perfect, just perfect. She’s the one I want to marry’ So they were wed right away .Months later the bairn wuz born. When Jimmy visited the nursery he was horrified: the bairn was the ugliest, most pathetic human you can imagine. He rushed to his father-in-law asking how such a thing could happen considering the beauty of the parents. ‘Well,’ explained the farmer, ‘She was just a weeeeee bit, not that you could hardly tell...Pregnant when you met her.’

I don’t much care for mobile phone apps. Playing games on a screen the size of a hobbit’s lunchbox is a basically case of poking away in random directions with a stubby digit until you get to some sort of climax (sort of like a teenager’s first fumbling behind ASDA on the Parkway). However, after the rather fantastic Angry Birds, mobile phone games have gone galactic with all manner of weird and wonderful ways to waste your time. And two of the best are currently Feed Me Oil and Rocket Bunnies. Feed Me Oil In Feed Me Oil, you are given a limited number of tools to fill up a container with oil that pours from a pipe. The items range from fans, platforms, and waterwheels, and the trick is to set up the tools just right so the oil flows from the pipe to the tank in the most efficient way possible. It’s a puzzle game that’s pure simplicity, and one that’s currently at number one on iTunes. It’s not hard to see why, for it’s easy to play and genuinely challenging and if you like puzzle games, then Feed Me Oil is a sure-fire hit. Rocket Bunnies The bunny has featured many times in popular culture: Buggs Bunny, the Ravin’ Rabbids, that fat “paedophile” from failed soap, Eldorado. And who could forget the Playboy bunnies? Those gals serve a vital purpose in society, for without them, countless wives would have to fake headaches on a nightly basis. But, being the model citizen that I am, I have no dealings with such tawdry nonsense. In fact, I spend my time playing games and reviewing them for you. I’m so virtuous! It has to be said that I do love bunnies, their cute little cottontails and their twitching noses, so, it was love at first sight for Rocket Bunnies, where you play a rabbit on a rocket (why not) and it’s your job to guide said lapine across a stellar backdrop carefully choosing your moment to race from planet to planet eating carrots and avoiding the many hazards in your way. The faster you eat all the carrots, the better the score, which gives you stars which you can spend to access new maps. It’s as simple as that. Of course, you’ve got all manner of fiendish devices to thwart your extra-terrestrial exploration, including space spiders, lightning walls and exploding bombs. With a lot of polish and some truly addictive gameplay, this is a particularly endearing game and, at just 59p it’s well worth the price. It’s my Game of the Month!

NEWS

THE SATURDAYS

The Saturdays announce their first ever arena tour. After a sellout tour earlier this year and with the highly anticipated release of their new album this autumn, Frankie, Mollie, Una, Vanessa and Rochelle have announced their biggest tour to date, a massive 11 date ARENA tour.. The tour will see them playing at some of the biggest indoor venues the in UK this December, including the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on Tuesday 15th December. Tickets priced £32.50. £26.50 (booking fee may apply) go on general sale Friday 17th June at 9am. With all of this in mind, it’s clear that while The Saturdays were ‘big’ before, they are about to get ‘HUGE’. “The thought that we are about to take on arenas sends a shiver down my spine,” Rochelle comments, “it’s everything we’ve ever dreamed of as a band – and we know the end of the year is going to come around so fast. Playing an arena is a terrifying, but most exciting thought!” The girls already know that they’ll be performing material from their forthcoming – and as yet, unnamed, album. Although they do say the fabulously bold and edgy first single Notorious is a good indication of what’s to come, a tougher, edgier sound. “It’s very current,” says Una. “We still have our pop edge, but this time around we’ve taken things a bit more dancey.” Frankie adds: “And we want to reflect that in our live show. We want it to be like one big giant party. The best night out you can have this December!” Undoubtedly, the UK’s biggest and most consistently high-hitting girl band, with over 650,000 Facebook fans and a combined 1 million followers on twitter, The Saturdays have sold over 2 million singles and albums in the UK alone. The Saturdays have also had nine Top 10 UK singles, including huge hits Higher feat Flo Rida, Missing You and Ego, the girls have racked up over 35 million total views on YouTube. Tickets for The Saturdays at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield go on general sale Friday 17th June 9am, priced £32.50, £26.50 (booking fee may apply). Tickets are available online at www.motorpointarena. co.uk, by phone on 0114 256 5656 and in person at the Arena box office.

honour those who teach and respect those who share knowledge. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

The Way of the Witch People often hear the word ‘witch’ and immediately think of Black Magic. There are some black witches but the majority are white with good souls. Their beliefs are different to most religions as they usually worship nature and the Goddess. They have Pagan beliefs and celebrate the Sabbats (festivals, spaced at approximately even intervals throughout the year). They use various rituals to celebrate the seasons which are called Solstice. I wondered where the title of ‘witch’ originated from and so I set my stall to find out. During the year 1930, in England, the late Dr. Gerald Brousseau Gardner stumbled upon a witches’ coven and there he discovered the true meaning of witch craft. The word ‘witch’ stems from the Anglo Saxon word for ‘Wicca’ which means wise one or sorceress. Wicca is an Earth religion and instead of worshiping in a church rituals are held outside. Wicca celebrates the beauty of the moon, stars and sun promoting a life in harmony with nature. Wiccans believe in the Three Fold Law and justice ( The Karma Law). The Craft - What is it exactly? The craft is accepting, generous and loving. It is a gentle, unobtrusive and supportive way of life that embraces nature. The Craft is a serious religion and made Witchcraft a popular way to worship. What do they worship? There are thirteen principles of Wiccan belief. In 1974 the Council of American Witches decided that witches needed to be seen in a new light - as normal people, not the hateful, devil worshipers portrayed in the media. The thirteen principles were drafted by Gnosticus a former chairman of the American Council. I am abbreviating the principles because they are too long for this article. They state that: (1) Witches are attuned to the natural rhythm of life forces, marked by phases of the moon. (2) Witches live in harmony with nature. (3) Witches acknowledge greater power.

(7) Witches see religion as magic, a world view and philosophy of life that they can identify as Witchcraft the Wiccan way (8) Calling yourself a witch does not make you one as there are rules to follow. Living in harmony is what they want. (9) Witches work within a role that gives meaning to the development of the universe.

(11) Witches are not threatened by debates, history of the craft, their origins, the legitimacy of different traditions.

(12) Witches do not accept the concept of ‘absolute evil’ nor do they worship any entity known as `Satan` or the devil. They do not seek power through the suffering of others (13) Witches seek nature to help people and their own well being. A little bit heavy but we need to know the witchcraft principles. I can agree, I work within the thirteen principles even though I am not a Witch. I use herbs, candles , incense and love nature. One of my pleasures is to find rare foliage, flowers or herbs that I can use for medicinal purposes. Any questions to psychicglynis@talktalk.net or Mob 07811632353

Sheffield City Council and Veolia Environmental Services are announcing the launch of the ‘revamped’ green sack service for those areas of the city that do not have a green bin. From Monday 20th June, Veolia are changing the way that residents can recycle their garden waste from the home. Changes to the existing green sack service means: • You can choose to provide your own green sacks • You will have a scheduled collection every 4 weeks • You have a collection week rather than a collection day so your sacks will be collected at some point during your collection week • We will collect green sacks from April to October Residents will still be able to collect 6 green sacks at a time free of charge from local libraries, housing offices or other outlets. Please visit: www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield or call: 0114 273 4567 for a full list of outlets. However, residents can now also provide their own sacks as long as they are green and

suitable for garden waste. Residents should only use thick green plastic sacks as thin plastic sacks often split easily. Councillor Leigh Bramall, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport said: “Having listened to feedback received from residents, we have made a number of changes to the green sack collection service. The changes mean that residents will receive a regular collection of up to 6 sacks every 4 weeks and can choose to provide their own green sacks or collect them free of charge from one of the many outlets across the city – whatever is easiest for them.” Residents should look out for leaflets that will drop through letterboxes across Sheffield over the next three weeks, providing more information about the changes together with a calendar of collection dates. Approximately 20% of the average household’s rubbish is made up of green garden waste. If this waste ends up in the black wheeled bin, a valuable resource that could be turned into compost is wasted. Residents can keep their gardens clean and tidy and help us to recycle garden waste by using the green sack collection service. Green sacks are for: leaves, hedge and plant clippings, twigs, small branches, prunings, grass mowings, weeds and cut flowers. For more information on green sacks and other ways of disposing of garden waste, including home composting, please visit: www.veolia. co.uk/sheffield or call: 0114 273 4567. FISHY CAMRA LAUNCHES NATIONAL RAFFLE SOMETHING GOING ON CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has this week launched its National Raffle for 2011 in a bid to raise valuable campaigning funds for the ongoing battle to save the Great British pub. The launch of the Raffle comes at a time when 1,300 pubs shut their doors in 2010, causing the loss of more than 13,000 jobs. While CAMRA’s dedicated members have campaigned for 40 years to save their locals, the organisation believes the next 40 years will present greater threats to community life - through the loss of local amenities such as pubs - than ever before. Colin Valentine, CAMRA National Chairman, said: ‘CAMRA has campaigned tirelessly for 40 years to save valued community pubs from closure, and without

the dedicated efforts of our members, we feel the issue of pub closures would be even more severe. ‘In the face of chronic under investment, problems with UK planning laws, eye watering beer taxation levels, and continued issues with the way large pub companies are operated, we currently experience uncertain times in the pub industry. ‘With the launch of this Raffle today, CAMRA is seeking to raise much needed campaigning funds in order to help continue to safeguard the future of community pubs and champion them as invaluable local amenities. All proceeds will go towards helping us to act locally through campaigns such as Local Pubs Week, which encourage more people to visit the pub, as well as helping us hammer home the

pub closure message to central Government when we lobby politicians.’ CAMRA’s National Raffle 2011 is open to both members and non-members alike. The top prize this year is £3000, with £1,000 and £500 going to second and third places respectively. CAMRA has also organised fantastic beery prizes for 20 other winners. The deadline for entering the National Raffle is Monday September 19th 2011, with the draw taking place a week after on September 26th. Members and non members who would like to donate to CAMRA’s pub campaigning funds directly can also visit www. camra.org.uk/donate.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Apart from playing some great tunes we do end up covering some interesting and sometimes bizarre things here on Magic. I mentioned the other day that I’ve been suffering with a pong in my kitchen. Years ago after a cholesterol test a nurse gave me some dietary advice and happened to mention that canned fish can be very good for you. Quite often I’ve heeded the warning and enjoyed pilchards, sardines and even herring. For the first time in ages a couple of weeks ago I had a tin of mackerel in tomato sauce at lunchtime. After eating half one day I put the remains in a Tupperware container to enjoy the next. Some time long afterwards the smell lingered and even got worse although I’d finished it all and even mopped out the fridge. I even spent one day where it felt like the smell was coming from everybody else I met which was odd. May be I’ve been getting too used to it!! Thank you for all the recommendations that came in – White vinegar and warm water, a sliced lemon and coffee granules in a muslin cloth shoved in at the back. I’m now in the middle of some urgent de-icing and taking all this on board, so hopefully that will be the end of it. Anyway, a world away from my smelly fridge it is of course Father’s Day on Sunday and we have an X box prize to give away complete with console and Kinnect technology plus copies of triple CD ‘Dad Rocks’. Just tune in for the winning tracks, call when you hear one and you could win the CD package and get yourself in the grand prize draw as well.

Transforming notorious rock venue Corporation into a groove mister’s paradise, something very strange indeed happened on the evening of Saturday 4th June. Unlike most gigs that pass through Corps door’s, Fun Lovin’ Criminals contradicted the traditional post-punk, rock band genre that attracts audiences on most weekends… contradicted this by oozing seriously infectious funk rays, bringing some NYC soul to this joint…hell Fun Lovin’ Criminals had us all exactly where they wanted… well and truly in the mood baby! Letting the audience know that he was ‘in Sheffield with friends, getting this party started…’ front man Huey Morgan has a certain je ne sais quoi about him-whether it be his comfortable stage presence or the chemistry he sparks between his crowd, he is a sure master at working the floor. Perfectly demonstrated in tracks such as ‘Too Hot,’ Huey not only feels what he is singing, but clearly has passion for what he does so well. With this characteristically deep vocals and ‘soul man’ image, through the entirety of the ninety minute set, Corporation took on the form of a shady underground jazz club in the heart of New York City. Strange… Although finding someone under the age of twenty in the crowd was, let’s be honest, about as unusual as seeing Fun Lovin’ Criminals at Corp, a highlight of the evening came with the opening riffs of ‘The Grave and the Constant,’ funk-infused number from the bands first album ‘Come Find Yourself’ in 1996. A clear indication of the threepiece’s hugely successful musical ability, Brian Leiser

Empire was reportedly eventually found floating in Chelsea Harbour in the early hours of the morning), and the band’s full-blown main stage ‘comeback’ show at this year’s Download Festival, The Darkness make their return to touring with an extensive UK run in November 2011. This is the original line-up’s first tour since 2005, and the largest selection of British towns the band has performed in on one tour since they were still riding around in a clapped-out transit van. When the band released their debut album ‘Permission To Land’ in 2003 they exploded into the UK’s consciousness with a fresh and exciting sound, look and attitude. Playing every show as if they were headlining Wembley Stadium they embraced the classic rock sounds of the 70’s and 80’s and gave it a unique updated sound for the new millennium. Countless chart hits followed, 3 Brit Awards, millions of albums sales and sold out tours before they called it a day in 2006. After Download this weekend the band will play several European festivals before returning to concentrate on finishing their third album … do hold your breath! See The Darkness bring the light …. Anvil has been on a rock ‘n’ roll journey for the past three decades, but it has become a very public rocket ride into the musical and pop culture stratosphere only recently. And that’s their dedication to their music. Ever since the award-winning documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil propelled the Canadian band from their respectable, hard-earned status as a band revered by the likes of Metallica, Motorhead and Guns N’ Roses, Anvil founding members, vocalist/guitarist Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, have made sure that one thing remains constant. Rather than shy away from the publicity, the attention and the casual fans that are a product of this rock doc, Anvil, rounded out by bassist Glenn Five, are embracing it. “We are going after it with a vengeance,” Kudlow declared. “That’s how we think about life in general. Enjoy every minute, like you are winning the Cup!” While most bands that have been around as long as Anvil may be on their last legs, there’s a renewed vim and vigor surrounding Anvil. That type of renewal is not common to a band with three decades of history, but Anvil have done the necessary legwork work to allow their band to be one of the most relevant heavy metal bands in existence, even as they enjoy a new and muchdeserved measure of success. It’s as though they truly have arrived with Juggernaut of Justice, their fourteenth studio album was via The End Records on May 10th. follow in this vein, all of which didn’t disappoint when performed at Don Valley Bowl. A major highlight of the night came with the opening riffs of Sheffield anthem ‘Mardy Bum,’ of which was acoustically sung by both Turner and the audience. Word perfect throughout, this melancholy pace was furthered by ‘Cornerstone,’ an alternative take on the standard love song from the four piece’s third album. ‘I Bet that you look good on the dance floor’ brought us all out of the blissful daze we all seemed to be incarcerated in, with the spontaneous eruptions of mosh-pits and crowd surfing littering the tent. ‘505’ was declared as ‘the last one for you lot tonight,’ which no doubt struck an honest, local connection with the audience…at the end of the day these are just four boys from High Green who have done well for themselves. Never underselling their talent however, after a very short stint off stage, The Arctic Monkeys returned for a three song encore to include ‘When the sun goes down’ and ‘Florescent Adolescent.’ Masters of subtlety, the band gave closure to the set with ‘A Certain Romance,’ the closing track off ‘Whatever People Say I am, that’s what I’m not.’ Indirectly thanking the audience for supporting them from day one, the Arctic Monkeys deserve all the credit and success they get. A show that will be imprinted in the minds of many people for a long long time, who’s up for Hometown gig round two? Sign us up!

REVIEWby KT Evans ARTIC MONKEYS 11/06/11

‘Thank you so much Sheffield…we should make arrangements to do this again sometime,’ schmoozes Alex Turner to his crowd of adorning fans at the last date of the Arctic Monkeys hometown gigs, ‘… we’re so grateful for you lot coming here.’ Although four hugely successful albums now under their belt, Arctic Monkeys are and will remain Sheffield’s very own belonging; with chants of ‘High Green’ and ‘Yorkshire’ erupting from the 10,000 + audience, no one will let the Arctic Monkeys dismiss their roots… and nor, it seems, will they forget. Supporting one of the most talked about shows in Sheffield’s musical history, Mabel Love followed by up-and-coming Anna Calvi got the ball rolling, with upbeat numbers to kick off the evenings events. Although both did put up a good case in pulling the crowds into the make-shift, festival-esque tent, it seemed the weather (which, surprisingly wasn’t rain) resulted in more people sunning themselves than actually watching two out of the three supporting groups. Attempting and succeeding to increase audience numbers (maybe he’s just got first class pulling power?) Miles Kane shone a whole new perspective onto vintage indie. With ‘Rearrange’ arguably receiving the best reaction off his set, Kane has a certain suave-sophistication about him, which ensured he won over the now hyped up audience, who it seemed had now well and truly put on their ‘dancing shoes.’ A short interlude commenced which saw the entire audience sing along to Hot Chocolate’s ‘You Sexy Thing,’ (not sure about believing in miracles, this was just down right bizarre) to be cut short for the hugely anticipated main event of the night. Blasting their way onto the stage with ‘The View from the afternoon,’ co-incidentally the opening track off their very first album, The Arctic Monkeys from the word ‘go’ not only had the audience eating from their hands, but also demonstrated they are masters in setting the mood. Strobe lighting and smoke machines came as standard, with a black and white screening of the entire concert behind the band themselves. Aiding the authentic indie image of the four-piece, this allowed everyone a chance to catch a glimpse of Sheffield’s royalty, along with four other screens dotted around the perimeter of the tent. A perfect example to indicate that variety really is the spice of life, the Arctic Monkeys set comprised of a successful balance of tracks from all four albums, not only promoting their new release ‘Suck it and See,’ but also deep rooting their monumental back catalogue. Tracks such as ‘Don’t sit down ‘cause I’ve moved you chair’ have ironically humorous lyrics (‘run with scissors through a chip pan fire fight’) indicating that after the somewhat dark and twisted world of ‘Humbug,’ Arctic Monkeys have resurrected their sense of humour and light-heartedness to produce a sarcastically sophisticated new album. Other tracks ‘Brick by Brick’ and ‘The Hell Cat Spangled Shalalala’

juggled both the trumpet and keys throughout; a hard ask however unquestionably delivered with ease. ‘We Have All The Time In The World,’ followed which, smooth and sophisticated, saw Huey take on the role of love connoisseur to successfully schmooze his way through the slower paced number. Other tracks, ‘Loco’ and ‘Scooby Snacks’ proceeded this, which arguably the best of the night, saw the crowd efficiently sing back their lyrics to atmospherically speaking, create an electrifying edge. Although leaving the stage towards the latter half of the set, the audience were having none of it, with chants of ‘FLC’ attracting the band back for a four song encore. Finally declaring ‘I told you these mother f***ers wouldn’t let us down,’ it’s pretty safe to say the feeling, Huey Morgan, is mutual…

PETS CORNER

NEUTERING Every year vets treats thousands of pets suffering from illnesses such as pyometra (a life-threatening infection of the womb), prostate disease and cancer of the mammary glands; illnesses which could have been prevented by neutering. Most people are aware that neutering their pets helps to stop unwanted pregnancies, therefore reducing the numbers of stray and abandoned pets. However, many pet owners don’t realise the potentially lifesaving health benefits also associated with this procedure. PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “It is upsetting for owners when pets become critically ill with conditions that could have been prevented by neutering.“ An additional benefit of neutering can be reducing aggressive behaviour. Neutered male cats, for example, are less likely to roam and fight, which in turn reduces their chances of getting feline AIDS (FIV) which is spread by bites and scratches. Owners should speak to their vet for advice about reducing aggression; which may or may not include neutering. Sean continues: “Neutering is a vital part of responsible pet care, and has important health benefits. It also allows very social animals, such as rabbits, to be kept together without producing unwanted offspring. PDSA recommends that all owners speak to their vet about the health and welfare benefits of getting their pet neutered.” Pet owners interested in finding out more can get a free copy of PDSA’s Neutering leaflet by logging onto www.pdsa.org.uk/ leaflets. The leaflet is also available from PDSA PetAid hospitals and charity stores across the UK or by calling freephone 0800 917 2509. PDSA offers affordable preventive services, including neutering, microchipping and vaccinations to eligible clients at all PDSA PetAid hospitals. To be eligible for PDSA treatment, pet owners must be in receipt of either Council Tax Benefit or Housing Benefit and live within the designated catchment area of a PDSA PetAid service. For more information about PDSA PetAid services or eligibility please visit www.pdsa.org.uk or call freephone 0800 731 2502.

Angler’s Corner by Clint Walker

After giving a few ideas last week about doing something different with your baits to get an edge over your fellow anglers, here are a couple more suggestions........ How about scraping the skin of the boilie to increase the surface area? By using a blade to trim the bait, the increased surface area increases scent and flavour leakage into the surrounding water and disrupts the circular shape of the boilie which can often fool a wary fish. Dips and glugs can be a fantastic way to enhance the attractiveness of a boilie. By steeping the baits for a few minutes, hours or even days in some instances, the baits will draw in flavour via the osmotic process, which will then released when immersed in lake water to create a cloud of scent in the immediate vicinity of your hook bait. What about water? Soaking baits in lake water for a day or two will give them a ‘washed out’ appearance which may fool very wary fish on pressured waters into believing that the baits have been in the water for a prolonged period and therefore present less of a risk! A sneaky tip which has resulted in the downfall of some notable captures! One of my favourite ways of giving my baits a quick ‘push’ is to wrap my hook offering in paste. A chopped boilie on the hair provides a good anchor to wrap paste around and prevent it flying off on casting. It is important to leave the hook point clear of the paste so it doesn’t impede the strike as this is sometimes an ‘instant’ method which can give immediate reaction. Many of the readymade pastes break down fairly quickly, so it makes sense to use one with a slower rate of ‘melt’ to keep fish digging around looking for the source of the attractor. The careful use of PVA can bring good results, allowing a small amount of freebies to be placed close or under the hook bait. Readily available ‘stick’ ground bait mixes now give the angler the option of passing the hook length through the PVA mesh ‘stick’ and securing it with the hook before reattaching to the main line. This gives the added advantage of disguising the last couple of inches of hook link, which is covered by bait, in addition to putting scent and flavour into the water. Walnut sized mesh bags and bigger solid bags are also a great way to bring fish to your hook bait. By filling a solid bag with a small amount of oil based liquid flavour (nothing else) before casting out, you are guaranteed to introduce maximum flavour for minimum effort! The possibilities to up your chances are limited only by what you can think of; casting a boilie out is only the start of it, so let your imagination run wild! Don’t just follow the crowd, think about your angling and what you can do to boost your catch rates; an angler who thinks more, catches more!

Racing Form

by Timelord

The big meeting this week is Royal Ascot where some of the best equine talent in the world will be on show. As always with this meeting, where there is good prize money on offer, there are many big fields but also some small but very select ones – but all promising to offer top class fare. There are several Group class contests every day and it all looks like being truly exciting action. On Saturday there are supplementary races to BBC Royal Ascot coverage with another eight events being broadcast by Channel 4 from Newmarket, Ayr and Redcar. With so much racing there isn’t enough space to give in-depth analysis for each race so this week I am simply making a selection for each race. PRE-SEASON FINALISED

LEEDS AND STOKE TICKET DETAILS

United’s final pre-season test ahead of the forthcoming season will be against Blackpool. Ian Holloway’s side, who were relegated from the Premiership despite impressing the nation, will visit Bramall Lane on Sunday 31st July (3pm kick-off). The game will not only conclude Danny Wilson’s preparations ahead of the League One campaign, but it will also close United’s annual and popular Open Day, which will be staged on the same day. Meanwhile, United will face two of Malta’s bestknown teams during the training camp on the Mediterranean Island. Sliema Wanderers will provide the opposition on Monday 18th July at Ta’ Qali, whilst on Wednesday 20th July, the Blades face Hibernians at the Paola Stadium. United’s pre-season fixtures, for the first team, are now complete. Trips to Sheffield FC, Worksop Town and Malta will precede home games against Doncaster Rovers and Blackpool. Boss Wilson said: “We’ve selected Doncaster and Blackpool for good reason. Both are well known for playing attractive football - similar to the way I want us to play - and therefore it will be a good barometer.” Ticket information and news of a special offer for supporters’ to be part of the Maltese trip will be announced shortly. United’s Carling Cup first round opponents will be announced on Thursday ahead of the release of Friday’s npower League One fixtures.

Sheffield Wednesday can now confirm ticket prices for the pre-season friendly games against Leeds United and Stoke City at Hillsborough. Tickets in advance are priced at £12 for adults and £6 for concessions and will be available to buy from 9.00am tomorrow morning (Saturday 11 June). Supporters can purchase their tickets from the online shop at swfc.co.uk/shop which includes the option of printing tickets at home, or alternatively, in person from the Owls Megastore. Local rivals Leeds visit Hillsborough on Saturday 23 July, while Premiership side Stoke will serve as testing S6 opponents ahead of the new campaign on Saturday 30 July. For the clash against Leeds, the South Stand and Kop will be open for Owls fans, while the North Stand will be open for disabled supporters only. The Stoke game will see the North and South Stands open to Owls fans. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 1.00pm. Ticket prices on the turnstiles are to be confirmed.

DANNY EYES TARGETS BLADES NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Players are on Danny Wilson’s immediate agenda. The new Gaffer has been making contact with the current squad, whilst also making enquiries about possible new additions. He says: “We have got our targets and players we would like to bring in. Relegation means there have to be cuts so we have to try and balance the books too, because it isn’t going to be an open cheque. We have got to cut our cloth according to League One.” “We have spoken to quite a few players that we’d like to bring in; this club is an attraction in itself because it is massive. The only downside at this moment in time is it is in League One, but in my view we can still attract a better calibre of player. “I would like to think that if the money is right and two or three clubs are vying for a certain player then we would be the first choice and let’s hope the fresh faces give everyone a lift. “I think we are light in a few areas, out wide we haven’t got players in abundance and that is a similar case in the full-back areas. We have also got a few injuries to carry straight into the season, with the likes of Morgs, Johnny Ertl and Andy Taylor - and that is before we start.” Of the existing players, Wilson added: “The ones that have been available we have spoken to, but in the majority of cases a lot are on holiday and we will have to wait until we report back for pre-season. “We have received a positive reaction from the ones we have spoken to. Everyone needs assurances, where possible, and we have asked for total commitment to the cause and they have bought into that. “I suppose you could say it is a clean sheet from which to build from. The unfortunate thing at the present time is we don’t know who will be here and June is traditionally a dead month unless you are a big hitter in the Premiership. “We have got to wait and see if anyone is going to try and take our players, if not then that is fine, if they are then we will deal with it when it comes along.”

SCOTT DELIGHTED AT TRIO MILLERS NEWS www.themillers.co.uk

Andy Scott’s squad for next season is beginning to take shape with the Millers manager revealing his delight at keeping hold of Jamie Annerson, Dale Tonge and Ollie Banks. All three recently committed their future to the club with Scott hinting that they are set to feature heavily for the Millers next season. “I am very pleased to keep hold of them,” he told Millers Player. “Jamie showed at the end of last year that he was more than capable of filling the position, so that will give us good competition for places in that area. He is a good young ‘keeper who will only get better. “Ollie is an unknown quantity but we have seen that he has ability,” added Scott. “He will be training with the first team full time from preseason so hopefully he will improve from that experience, and establish himself in the squad. “Tongey has had his problems with injury over the last couple of years but he is a good age, he has played plenty of games, he knows the league and he is a great lad to have around the place. He is a good footballer with plenty of energy, who wants to improve and a really good professional.” Scott also revealed last week terms are close to being agreed with Jason Taylor, whilst he has also been busy bringing in Ben Pringle from Derby and Gareth Evans from Bradford.

CLOSE DEFEAT

ICE HOCKEY By Sarah Youle

SHEFFIELD will be left wondering what might have been after a dramatic 46-43 Premier League defeat at Scunthorpe on Friday. The Tigers looked to be heading to victory leading by two-points going into the final race, but then saw those hopes disappear as both guest Richard Hall and skipper Ricky Ashworth were both excluded. Hall was the first to fall on the first bend, but with Ashworth well clear in front the race win would have still have given Eric Boocock’s men a narrow victory. However, he also fell and with Hall not under power when the race was stopped it left the Scunthorpe duo of Ben Wilson and Tero Aarnio to ride unopposed in the re-run for the most unlikely of victories. All appeared to be going so well as a couple of early 5-1s had put them into an eight-point lead and, even when the Scorpions responded to reduce the deficit, Emiliano Sanchez and Simon Lambert quickly restored the eight-point advantage with a maximum in Heat 8. Scunthorpe then replied with a 5-1 of their own one race later, but Heat 10 saw Ashworth beat home favourite David Howe from the start and Hugh Skidmore passed Thomas Jorgensen for a Tigers 4-2. Hall then sensationally passed the home pair of Tero Aarnio and David Howe on his way to a share of the points in Heat 13, but when the same Scorpions duo raced to a 4-2 in Heat 13 the Tigers advantage was reduced to just four (41-37). Another home 4-2 then followed in the penultimate race after a Lambert fall, but with the match almost won in the final race it all suddenly slipped away in the most dramatic of finishes. SCUNTHORPE 46: Ben Wilson 12, Tero Aarnio 11+2, David Howe 8, Steve Worrall 6+2, Viktor Bergstrom 6+1, Thomas Jorgensen 2, Joe Haines 1+1 SHEFFIELD 43: Richard Hall 10, Ricky Ashworth 10, Hugh Skidmore 6+1, Shane Parker 6, Simon Lambert 4+2, Ashley Birks 4+1, Emiliano Sanchez 3

The Sheffield Steelers last week announced the re-signing of power forward Neil Clark. Clark will also be completing his MBA studies at University of Sheffield. In his first season with the club last year he scored 37 goals, totalling 69 points in all. “We need more of the same from him next year,” said head coach Ryan Finnerty, “his goals will be crucial for us. I like his style of play, I like the way he goes to the net and he battles. I think with Neil and Colt King we will have two very dangerous and powerful wingers that will create havoc and cause many problems for our opponents.” Another new signing for the club is Chad Huttel. Huttel, 22, is fresh out of his US college hockey career, and had offers from many places, including Europe and the East Coast Hockey League. “I like the fact that Coach (Finnerty) was so direct,” said Huttel “he told me what was expected of me, how he wanted things doing and what was expected of me as a Steeler, what it meant to be a Steeler. He also told me that we were expected to win every night and that he wanted to win every trophy on offer next year – I like that, I like that pressure and that expectation.” The Sheffield Steelers Supporters Club are in the process of planning their trip to Herning in Denmark to see the club compete in the Continental Cup later this year. Prices will be announced soon and anyone wishing to join the trip can contact Sandra at steeltravel@ googlemail.com to be put on the list.
