MUSIC FANS COUNTDOWN TO TRAMLINES With only two weeks to go until this year’s Tramlines music festival all eyes are on Sheffield for what is shaping up to be an amazing weekend.

Chart topping acts like Tinchy Stryder and Professor Green have been added to the bill as well as a second day for the New Music Stage.

Sunday’s New Music Stage will be curated

The local

rock outfit have always been firm supporters of the festival and this year they’ll bring their own brand of magic to Sunday’s proceedings.

Kate Hewett, Tramlines Booker said: “Rolo agreed to play the festival ages ago and we promised them that if we could expand the New Music Stage to two days, the second would be theirs.

We’ve literally only just confirmed Sunday but Rolo have done us proud.

by Rolo, Grammatics and much more. It’s been a rush, but it gives Sunday a real boost and is a crucial step in building the weekend programme.”

Local house legends The All Seeing I (who now play out as IMonster) open up the Memorial Hall on Sunday to create an Audiovisual Zone with Sheffield’s world class music industry event, Sensoria. The Audiovisual Zone creates a fantastic chill out area in one of Sheffield’s finest music spaces, at the City Hall and just round the corner from the New Music Stage, with offerings from Animat, The Cinematic

Film Orchestra, the Hunt the Horn and many more.

As well as headliner Tinchy Stryder, Olly Murs beefs up the early pop offering on the main stage on Saturday, proving there can be life after X factor with or without the high trousered one.

Sunday promises a raucous end to the festival.

Post Punk legends Echo and the Bunnymen will be providing a suitable main stage finish, while 65 Days of Static and the Dum Dum Girls will take the hardcore into the wee small hours.

From Focus, through the blues and ale trail, to a hard rock finish, Tramlines shows off the diversity of music supported by Sheffield.

And all for nothing! Just turn up and enjoy.

Well holiday season is well and truly upon us; now don’t get me wrong every one is entitled to a holiday but why do people all go at the same time?

All this sun and sea leaves us a bit short on the volunteer front, so we are looking for people who can step into the breach and get started providing assistance in the general delivery of the station activities. How much time you give is up to you and you can fit into any of our general duties of request collecting, assisting presenters in the broadcasting of programmes, and general admin duties alternatively we have specific roles available, see below. Ideally we’d like people to stay a bit longer than the summer holidays but even so if you’re on a long break from university and are looking for something to do with your time this summer we’d be interested to hear from you too. In fact anyone who is interested and can offer a little time, do get in touch and let’s see where you can help Radio Nightingale to help the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN The Whole of Spain will be celebrating at the moment, along with a few soccer widows in England that the world cup has finally come to a close. Of course this is for very different reasons.

Spain, the current European champions, has followed that tremendous feat by lifting the world crown. The football widows have now regained possession of their husbands and sons, who for the past month have been pre-occupied with nothing other than football.

Imagine the frenzy if we had a team that could compete at the highest level. Spain were worthy winners, much to my chagrin as I had a fairly large bet on Holland.

Diego Forlan, quite rightly named as the player of the competition, was outstanding throughout, and his contribution had much to do with the excellent showing of Uraguay. Another celebrity to emerge has been Paul, the psychic octopus, who had a hundred per cent success rate, predicting the match winner throughout. His modus operandi was to pick one of two food items in a tank. As octopi only live for a maximum of five years, punters will not be able to rely on his tips at the next world cup in four years time and William Hill will not have to close his account.

I have heard many stories of gigs being cancelled, as the venue have opined that there is not room for football and entertainment on the same evening. With a little bit of forward planning, it would not have been rocket science for the act not to be booked in the first place. I feel genuinely sorry for

acts involved in this, as there is precious little work about as it is.

Popular local singer/songwriter, now living in Selby, had his Saturday gig cancelled with three days notice, and a hastily arranged fill in gig was also cancelled. Venues that treat artistes so shabbily should be blacklisted by all other acts, which would be an instant cure to the problem. If I had my way, these venues would not even get a carol singer at Christmas.

My Benson and Hedges diet, although very successful,(I am now within two pounds of my target weight of twelve stones and seven pounds, from a starting point of fourteen stones and four pounds) has had an unfortunate side effect.

I have a chest infection which is more powerful than my first course of anti-biotics. I am now on a second course of stronger stuff. My doctor sent me for a chest x-ray, describing me on the card for the radiologist as ‘persistent cough, weight loss and smoker.’ Whatever happened to kind, generous and handsome?

The big story of the week has been that of Raoul Moat, who straight after his release from prison is alleged to have sought revenge on his girlfriend for breaking off the relationship and getting with someone else. He is alleged to have shot the boyfriend of only one week dead and seriously injuring his ex girlfriend and then gone on the run wounding a police officer.

The whole country has been very condemnatory, and I try to see the other side of the coin. The man has obviously had a severe

I am not saying what he did was right, or justified, I am just trying to get some perspective of why this tragedy occurred in the first place, with the needless loss of two lives.

Apparently, on facebook, he has attained some form of hero status, which is of course ridiculous. Two thousand people pressed the ‘like’ button for a memorial to him. At the end of the day, he is still someone’s son and somebody’s father.

We visited what has become a favourite pub of mine, the Steelmelters at Killamarsh, on Friday night to see my dear and close friend, Sunny Daye, and I have to say she was magnificent, losing none of that amazing talent and stagecraft that I have enjoyed for so many years.

The benefit night for my good pal, Glen Dale, who has had a leg amputated, has now been finalised.

The venue is Wadsley wmc, and a fantastic show which includes an appearance by Hi De Hi’s Paul Shane, great entertainment from amongst others, Sunny Daye, Cassie Kennedy, Robin Good, Glen’s two singing sons, Dave Lee and Lee Johns, and compered by the best all rounder , Gary Phillips.

It got crowded in heaven so, for one day and one day only, it was decided to only accept people who had really bad day on the day they died.

St. Peter was standing at the pearly gates and said to the first man, “Tell me about the day you died.” The man said, “Oh, it was awful. I was sure my wife was having an affair, so I came home early to catch her with him. I searched all over the apartment but couldn’t find him anywhere.

So I went out onto the balcony, we live on the 25th floor, and found this man hanging over the edge by his fingertips. I went inside, got a hammer, and started hitting his hands. He fell, but landed in some bushes. So, I got the refrigerator and pushed it over the balcony and it crushed him. The strain of the act gave me a heart attack, of which I died from.”

St. Peter couldn’t deny that this was a pretty bad day, and since it was a crime of passion, he let the man in. He then asked the next man in line about the day he died.

“Well, sir, it was awful,” said the second man. “I was doing aerobics on the balcony of my 26th floor apartment when I twisted my ankle and slipped over the edge.

I managed to grab the balcony of the apartment below, but some maniac came out and started pounding on my fingers with a hammer. Luckily I landed in some bushes. But, then the guy dropped a refrigerator on me!”

St. Peter chuckled, let him into heaven and decided he could really start to enjoy this job. “Tell me about the day you died?” he said to the third man in line. “OK, picture this; I’m naked, hiding inside a refrigerator....”

LIAM ʻEXCELSʻ THROUGH COUNCIL SCHEME Since he was seven-years old Liam Richards’ life has been shaped by a love of martial arts. The sport has improved his health and fitness and also helped him cope with school bullies when he was a youngster.

With encouragement and support from Sheffield City Council’s enterprise programme, the 21 year-old from Sheffield has used his passion for martial arts to set up his own business teaching others the skill and philosophy behind kickboxing and karate.

Liam said: “Through martial arts I learned how to defend myself and became more focused, fitter and healthier. But one of the main benefits for me was that it gave me the confidence to help me cope with bullying at school. I wanted to be able to pass my skills on.”

Liam began teaching martial arts classes to youngsters and adults under the Excel brand two-and-a half years ago. His classes quickly grew in popularity and he outgrew the rented rooms at his local gym.

His popularity as one-half of martial arts dance duo Strike, has also raised the profile of Liam’s venture. Liam and his Strike partner Danny Ball appeared on the popular television talent show in 2008, reaching the finals with their show-stopping martial arts skills and acrobatics.

The next stage of Liam’s business venture was made possible thanks to advice and financial assistance from Sheffield City Council’s enterprise programme Liam explained: “I have been in contact with the council’s enterprise programme for about four months. The meetings with enterprise coaches have been really useful as they helped me get sponsorship, showed me how to do a business plan and helped me concentrate on the financial side of setting up a business. That was really useful in particular as people like me may have the motivation and determination to make

a business work but it showed me that I need to concentrate on how to make it work financially too.

Liam went on to open Excel Martial Arts Academy, based at Holbrook Industrial Estate, Beighton, Sheffield. The academy was formally opened in June 2010 following a celebratory event at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

Children and adults attended the event to see awe-inspiring demonstrations and try their hand at kickboxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, street and break-dance workshops, alongside celebrity guest, former Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson.

Liam said: “I also received £1,000 funding from the enterprise programme which I spent on gym mats for the academy. This was a massive help as I don’t think I would have been able to afford the set-up costs without that initial financial help. My students now have a modern and fully equipped venue in which to practice and learn.”

The Academy has since gone from strength to strength and currently teaches about 160 children and 30 adults, and has appointed a second instructor, Liam Eccles.

The Excel Martial Arts Academy is also complimented by Partner Company Excel Dance – run

by Liam’s 19-year-old sister Sharnie Richards. Sharnie teaches complimentary sports and dance activities such as street dance, break-dancing and cheerleading.

Freelance employees also offer personal training, circuit training, Pilates and yoga. Excel Dance is also located at Holbrook Industrial Estate.

Excel is family friendly with sports and dance activities to suit all ages and abilities.

There are ‘Mini Strike’ classes for toddlers aged three to five-years-old and ‘Mini Movers’ is designed to inspire tots to dance. Women can also attend ladies only sessions.

Excel is also becoming a wellknown name within Sheffield’s schools, through visits to inspire and teach martial arts. Liam hopes that martial arts will become a popular activity in schools alongside traditional sports such as football and athletics.

“Martial art is a great way of helping children get fit and healthy but we also teach youngsters life skills such as respect, perseverance, confidence, discipline and how to deal with bullying. I find that youngsters don’t need to use their martial arts training when dealing with bullies, it’s about having confidence. One 10-year-old boy in particular had been expelled from school and since I’ve taught him martial arts he has developed into a hard working and respectful child. That’s what inspires and motivates me,” Liam said.

In future Liam plans to franchise the business and if this is successful the Excel Martial Arts Academy may be a familiar name in many more towns across Yorkshire.

Liam said: “I’m not from a business background so the help and advice from the enterprise programme was so helpful. The link between Strike and the enterprise programme is something I definitely want to continue.

The meetings with the coaches will really help me with business planning and has helped me focus on the financial implications of developing my business. Going forward this will be essential to make Excel work.”

A FLAT MINOR IN SHEFFIELD! Elliot Minor started as a duo, Alex Davies and Ed Minton, who met at school when they were thirteen. Davies had previously been studying to be a concert violinist, but Minton introduced him to rock acts such as Green Day, Blink 182, and Something Corporate. In 2005, after they left Uppingham, they took a gap year to focus on their music.

Davies bumped into childhood friend Dan Hetherton when they were both picking up younger brothers and invited him to a band practice. He joined as the band’s drummer, and later they recruited Dan’s brother, Ed, to play bass. Davies kept in contact with another childhood friend, Ali Paul, who joined as their keyboardist. They named themselves The Academy, though later changed the name due to legal reasons. Davies built a simple recording studio at his home, called Mavehole Studios, in which they started to record more songs. Virtually all of their promotion was done through MySpace networking. In 2006, Elliot Minor won a

Sepultura are a phenomenon. For over twenty years, the band from Brazil has been delivering a brutal mix of metal, hardcore, thrash, punk and tribal that could hardly be more intense or more passionate.

What had begun in Belo Horizonte in 1984 soon turned into a metal hurricane of threatening proportions and has taken on undreamed of dimensions since the enlistment of American vocalist Derrick Green in 1998. You have to experience this band live on stage to understand the fascination that this South-American act holds. Being the first Brazilian metal band to succeed abroad, they were invited to the select group of headliners at the second edition of the Rock in Rio festival. After their unprecedented success abroad the band played a free outdoors gig in Sao Paulo in the Charles Muller Square, just outside Pacaembu Stadium, as a huge party to compensate for the long time they were away from their homeland. Unfortunately among the crowd of over 40.000 enthusiastic and excited fans, things ran out of control and

MySpace competition to support McFly on their Greatest Hits tour with an audience of over 13,000 at Newcastle. And they signed to an independent label Repossession Records, run by their manager, Gary Ashley.

Their first single, “Parallel Worlds”, reached No 31 on the UK Official Charts; and subsequent singles, “Jessica”, “The White One Is Evil”, and “Still Figuring Out”, all reached the top 30. They went on to sign a distribution deal with Warner and recorded their debut album in Santa Monica, California, with Jim Wirt. It debuted on April 14th, 2008. Many of the songs from the album were written during their school days, and upon release, the album managed to debut at No 6 on the UK Albums Chart and at No 30 on the Irish Albums Chart. That same year, Elliot Minor played at several large music festivals, including T in the Park, Reading and Leeds, and the Download Festival. They made an appearance on Jo Whiley’s Radio 1’s Live Lounge – Volume 3, recording a cover of Take That’s “Rule the World”. And their song “Running Away” was featured on the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics coverage (not a bad year then). The band took a break from touring to write their second album, Solaris. And In June 2009, the band announced that their distribution deal with Warner had come to an end, and that they

For years to come all their concerts in Brazil would only happened after long and harsh negotiations. But their most important work was released in 1993, with a stunning party in a medieval castle in England, where the press from all over the globe met. With the CHAOS AD album the band incorporated some unexpected elements to their brutal sound, like the Brazilian rhythms in the instrumental piece Kaiowas. Ever since this album came out, bringing new ideas, concepts and cultures in their music it has now become Sepultura’s trademark.

Territory was the first single off CHAOS AD. And the Territory video clip was shot in Israel, which was a huge step forward for a Brazilian metal band. The band then won the MTV Video Music Awards for best video of the year in Brazil. The band went on to break numerous records and collected many awards, and despite lineup changes the band are still going strong and you can catch them live in Sheffield when they play the Corp on the 15th.

TRAMLINES @ THE CITY HALL Sheffield City Hall will once again be playing a key part in this year’s Tramlines music festival, which is set to take over the city from 23 - 25 July 2010.

The City Hall’s involvement has been stepped up from last year as the venue is set to host the festival’s New Music Stage on both Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July.

The iconic grade II listed building will once again create a dramatic backdrop as a stage is set to be built on the City Hall steps. Tramlines organisers are intending the New Music Stage, sponsored by Exposed Magazine, to compliment the Main Stage events taking place on Devonshire Green, by offering a more alternative selection of acts.

For the Saturday, notable music webzineDrowned in Sound have lined up an exciting roster of new and emerging bands such as Dinosaur Pile Up, Chapel Club and The Twilight Sad, with Blood Red Shoes in the headlining slot.

On Sunday Sheffield experimental rock outfit, Rolo Tomassi are set to curate the stage drafting in the likes of friends Gallops and Grammatics to perform. Rolo Tomassi themselves will perform a set before headliners Gallows round off the weekend.

The doors of the Memorial Hall will also be flung open to the general public on Sunday as the organisers of Sheffield’ Sensoria Festival of film and music will be joining forces with the members of I Monster to create The Audio Visual Zone. This will include live performances from Animat, The Abstract Film Orchestra, The Pony Harvest, Skywatchers and Tara Busch, while the walls of the Memorial Hall will provide a canvas for an array of visual displays set against these performances. The Audio Visual Zone is set to utilise the venue in a way that has never been seen before whilst also providing a chilled environment that festival goers can relax in, should they wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the rest of the festival.

In true spirit of Tramlines all these events are free of charge and no tickets are needed.

artist: Pendulum Single: Witchcraft release date: 19th July The second single from their hardhitting ‘Immersion’ album. They’re already being accused, unfairly I think, of being a one trip pony.

Ok, they have hit on a formula that works and this single does have the very similar parts to it that make a Pendulum single.

But this is only the second album where they’ve hit on this particular style. So I say let them go with it and take it to its extreme. If you buy an album by a band and you love it, it can be a tad disappointing if you then buy the follow up and it’s something completely different. I think what Pendulum have done is taken all the best elements of their previous album and extend them throughout ‘Immersion’.

It is a relentless album and delivers, not just what is written on the can, but takes that staple new sound and homes it to perfection.

You will recognise the arrangement on this, slow vocal intro, steady build up and then BANG! The “drum and bass drums” (if get what I mean) crash in and the synth riffs start. This does have a lighter synth sound that isn’t dissimilar to pan pipes (take that as a positive) which I really like. But we then get a second riff that follows which is more the staple Pendulum sound. Its fast, its catchy and it’ll pack dancefloors. A few people are now going against this band but I believe that it’s just musical snobbery. Once you start to get big success you then get the inevitable big criticism. I prefer to judge people by the quality they produce and this is quality!

artist: Diana Vickers Single: The Boy Who... release date: 19th July Here we have one of the finalists of the past series of X-Factor. She stood out from most of the other female vocalists, mainly I think because of her Sandie Shaw kinda “no shoe wearing hippy chick persona”. Her vocals were/are a little different to what gets past the early judging panels on that program. It’s a sort of little girl breathy style that is quite appealing and it makes a nice change.

The problem we have here though is, once again, the wrong kind of music for the artist. This is a very average throwaway pop song. Little girls may like it but it aint gonna appeal to anyone over 12. She could’ve handled a more up to date Blondie or even a slight rockier style. She also has the danger of becoming annoying with her vocal style, it could start to irritate rather than intrigue.

artist: Goldfrapp Single: Alive release date: Out Now The original of this has been out for a few weeks now. But this re-mix is brand new and I had to mention it on here.

Goldfrapp have been a bit weak of late.

Not really hitting the heights of ‘Black Cherry’ I’m sorry to say. So they’ve been given the “Rock” treatment with this new mix. Trying to give it some balls………I applaud that wholeheartedly. The guitars on this are full on, heavy and brilliant. It sounds like Korn have trampled all over Goldfrapp’s studio. There is just one problem though…………….it just doesn’t fit?

It sounds as if someone’s got a guitar and drum track from some other song and just stuck it under the original track. This is a brilliant idea, terribly executed. Shame.

The Doncaster/Leeds based 5 piece set out to carve their own niche with a unique blend of lighthearted power- pop.

With their debut E.P, So Make Your Move out in July, the group aims to give the musical masses something to smile about. Summerlin’s Drew Lawson (vocals), Ben Jackson (guitar, vocals), Jake Greenwood (bass), Lee Whitaker (guitar) and Liam Broad (drums) met while their current bands were falling apart and were immediately bonded by their shared love of pop music and party. They began playing music together and in turn created Summerlin in Late 2008.

This week I would like to start with a little announcement - at the end of March 2011, after 16 years, I will be hanging up my frilly shirt and red hanky.

I will be putting my Meatloaf show into retirement to concentrate on ‘2real’ with Glyn. It was not an easy decision to make but we both feel that ‘2real’ is the way forward. I would like to thank my current partner in crime Gaynor for the last 12 months. I have loved working with her and have appreciated her dedication and commitment. I would like to thank Harry and Cliff for working hard to look after ‘Fallen from Hell’ and also to all the agents that booked us. Big thanks also go out to Karen, the girls, Jo and Phil, Donna, and Paul for all their help.

Thanks to Rik, Neil and Neil, and Jim for their commitment during the ‘2 Out of 3 Days’ but most of all an enormous thank you to all the people who have supported the Meatloaf show. Many many thanks!

Please look out for the ‘Fallen from Hell’ performance dates and come and join us for a beer.

A date to let you know about is Thursday the 29th of July when ‘2real’ will be joined by a number of other acts to take part in a

charity night. The charity night will take place at the Grove Social Club, Conisbrough and will raise money for Breast Cancer. It is a ticket do and they are selling fast!

Tickets can be purchased at the club. Get yourself down and have a cracking night!

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I said that a well known Sheffield band was getting back together with their old lead singer - well, the band is ‘Steeler’ and the singer Lee Warris. Lee Warris of ‘Frite Nite’ fame is currently in rehearsals with the rest of the lads putting together what is going to be a cracking show and to be honest one that I can’t wait to see.

Well, the world cup is over and Spain are now champions of the world. I think now is the time to book a holiday to Spain, put on a Spanish football shirt and get free ale every night. I’m not sure if it will work but it has got to be worth a try.

The other night I went to see ‘The Steve Milton Band’. They are old mates of mine and I have to say that they are just as good as ever.

They have been doing the pub circuit for a million years, with Ian on drums, Joe on keys, Steve up front, Fingers on bass and the wonderful John Fox on lead guitar. They are a brilliant band and if you like rock and blues music then it really doesn’t get any better.

I would like to begin by apologising to any readers who were disappointed not to find my column in last week’s issue – I had an extremely busy week at work!

However, I have a great deal to report this week.

On Friday night I went down to Queen’s Social Club to see Stephanie King’s ‘Stars of the Future’ stage show. I was pleasantly surprised to find the club nearly full to capacity.

The production showcased a vast array of young talent with participants ranging in age from 7 to 17 years. What a show these kids put on! Each young performer put their heart and soul into their act.

Not only were the performances of an exceptionally high standard but many of the performers showed an amazing stage presence. I enjoyed every part of the show, and I was by no means alone in this opinion. Everyone I spoke to after the show was full of praise. YOUNG MUSICIANS PLAN ROCK TRIBUTE TO BEST FRIEND ʻBEANʼ Young musicians in Rotherham are planning to host a rock, indie and metal festival in memory of their good friend Rob ‘Bean’ Crook who died in a road accident in January at just 23 years old.

His funeral was attended by several hundred people including some of the bands he followed. Bean’s Friends also created a new band called “Bean’s Bizkits” who cover songs from Bean’s favourite bands. They proved so popular that the idea for the ‘Bean Fest’ was born.

The idea was supported heavily by Facebook users and a date for the festival has been set for Saturday July 24.

“Bean’s Bizkits” have gone on to get good reviews after performing at several sell-out shows in town. The band’s vocalist Philip Whitehead said: “I hope we are demonstrating a positive way of grieving to help other people if they find themselves in similar circumstances.”

All proceeds from the event will go to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, a charity chosen by Bean’s parents Dorothy and Dennis Crook.

The festival is free of charge but fundraising will take place through voluntary donations/ bucket collections on the day and an auction for specially donated prizes.

As well as Bean’s Bizkits the line-up will include Monte Carlo $afe Crackers, Sporadic Slaughter and many more acts. As well as live music, the festival will also feature a comedian, hypnotist and DJs. The festival will take place at The Star Inn (High Street, Rawmarsh) between noon and midnight. The live music will start at 12 noon and finishes around 9pm - each performance is scheduled to last around 30 minutes.

ULTRAVOX BACK ON THE ROAD

Having interviewed Midge Ure about 10 minutes ago I can’t help but be impressed by his enthusiasm. You would have thought that he was 21 years old and embarking on his first nationwide tour.

Ultravox will be appearing at the 02 Academy Sheffield on Wednesday 25th August.

Following their amazing 15 date comeback sell out tour of the UK, which included two outstanding shows at Hammersmith Apollo and The Roundhouse in London this year, Ultravox have today announced a some UK tour dates in April 2010 on the eve of their first European Tour in 25 years.

Due to phenomenal public demand, Ultravox have ventured out on the road again, aptly named ‘Return To Eden Part II’ this follows amazing fan reaction and very high critical acclaim and stellar reviews from the media. The band’s line up of Midge Ure, Chris Cross, Warren Cann and Billy Currie, will perform shows across the UK and Europe.

Fans can look forward to the band performing material from all their albums, including Vienna, Rage in Eden and Quartet and material not covered in the last tour.

Ultravox were one of one of the primary exponents of the British electronic pop music movement of the early 1980’s.

Well as I write this, I’m dreading the call in from the nurses to have some minor surgery done on my right eye.

I am terrible with needles at the best of times but am assured it’s relatively quick and painless. However, I’ve been warned as well that I may need to wear a patch for a day or so.

The snag is that I am quite short sighted in my left eye though, so might be forced to wear my driving glasses over the top of the patch in order to maintain good vision on the other side, which may look a bit odd. May be I could get a Lord Charles style monocle?

Anyway, all this to one side, Rod Stewart is coming to Sheffield next Tuesday. Would you like to see the legend of leopard skin in concert?

Volunteers help older people reduce risk of falls

My landlord won’t carry out repairs to the property, what can I do?

Your landlord has an obligation to ensure the property is maintained in an adequate state of repair.

If essential repairs are not carried out on the property it may be possible to take legal action to force your landlord to comply with their legal obligations. What are my landlord’s obligations towards repairs?

Laws exist which oblige landlords to maintain properties in an adequate state of repair. The Landlord and Tenant Act of 1985 sets out the statutory duties of landlords, including: • Keeping the structure of the building in good repair, including: o guttering o drains and external pipes o the roof o exterior walls o windows and doors • Keeping systems used for heating and hot water in good repair.

• Keeping systems used for the supply of essential services in working order. This means: o electricity o gas o sanitation (including sinks, baths, toilets) o water What are the obligations of a tenant?

Tenants also have obligations to their landlord and the property they reside in. These include: • paying the rent as agreed • paying utility bills such as gas and electricity if this was agreed with the landlord • in most cases paying the council tax, water and sewerage charges • keeping the property reasonably clean • not damaging the property and ensuring your guests do not damage the property • using the heating properly • carrying our minor maintenance, like checking smoke alarm batteries If you do cause damage to the property or supplied furnishings then the landlord may be able to charge you for the cost of repairs or withhold some or all of your deposit.

THREE VALLEYS BEER FESTIVAL A number of pubs in the S18 and S17 area are teaming up on Saturday 17th July for a festival of real ale and entertainment.

Each pub will offer an expanded selection of cask conditioned beers, with some also offering traditional cider, food, music and other attractions.

A free bus service is being laid on, running every hour between Dronfield railway station and all the eleven pubs, with festival goers able to hop on and

off the bus as they please to try the different beers and attractions each venue has to offer.

Local breweries featured will include Thornbridge, Barlow, Abbeydale, Kelham Island, Peak Ales, Bradfield, Steel City Brewing and Oakwell Brewery. There will also be some interesting beers from further a field too. In the cider department, look out for Woodthorpe Hall cider, produced on a small scale in Holmesfield.

The pubs have been encouraged to put this

event on by the local branch of the campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), who saw the idea as a good opportunity to not just have a party but to encourage people to see what the pubs in the local communities have to offer and try some different craft brewed real ales and good quality artisan ciders, rather than sitting at home in front of the telly drinking cheap, mass produced booze from the supermarket!

SPOTLIGHT ON KILLAMARSH

Killamarsh is a town in North East Derbyshire.

It borders South Yorkshire to its North and West. It lies between Halfway and Mosborough to the West, Renishaw to the South, Beighton & Sothall to the North West, Wales to the North East, Harthill to its East and the Rother Valley Country Park to its north.

Killamarsh was mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Chinewoldemaresc or Chinewolde meaning “Cynewalds Marsh”.

The parish church of St. Giles contains gravestones dating back to the Saxon era as well as masonry work from the 12th century, and many stained glass windows. A number of Public houses in Killamarsh are over 300 years old. Domesday records Killamarsh as belonging to Hascoit Musard and being valued at 12 pence.

The community originally grew from a farming community, self sufficient in agricultural and dairy produce since the Middle Ages. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Killamarsh became a thriving mining town as the burgeoning Sheffield iron industry demanded coal and transport links with Sheffield matured. Coal has been mined in Killamarsh since at least the 15th century, but the first major mining operation opened at Norwood resulting in an almost doubling of the Killamarsh population between 1861 and 1871. The last two “pits”, Westthorpe and High Moor, are now gone, casualties of the early 80s pit closure programme.

The river Rother which flanks Killamarsh had provided power to grain mills since the earliest times and was used by ironmongers and smiths from the late 18th century. Killamarsh Forge drew the special wire used in the core of the 2nd trans-Atlantic telegraph cable laid by the SS Great Eastern in 1866 as well as other equipment used in the splicing operations.

Killamarsh is roughly the same distance to Sheffield, Chesterfield and Rotherham.

Sheffield became the dominant connecting city as its burgeoning iron and steel industry demanded coal, and the road between Killamarsh and Sheffield was upgraded.

Three railway lines once made their way through the west side of the town. The first was the North Midland Railway route from Derby to Leeds, later part of the Midland Railway and later still the LMS, whose station was Killamarsh West, located on the section known as the “Old Road” - the original direct route between Chesterfield and Rotherham avoiding Sheffield. The station closed to passengers in February 1954 and the line itself in July the same year, but it remains in use as a freight route, though some passenger trains are occasionally diverted this way. The second was

the main line of the Great Central Railway (later part of the LNER); the Killamarsh station here was Killamarsh Central. This closed in March 1963, the line itself in September 1966 to passengers and completely in 1981 after remaining partially in use serving Arkwright colliery near Staveley - the route today is part of the Trans-Pennine Trail.

Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver grew up in Killamarsh before joining Mansfield Town’s youth academy.

He later signed by Manchester City, stepping up to the first team where played over 200 games. After groundbreaking surgery following a long term knee injury, part of his rehabilitation was going on loan to his favourite team Sheffield Wednesday before joining Charlton Athletic, Dundee United and Burnley.

Richard Hinds also grew up in Killamarsh and is now a member of the first team squad at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club after spells with other clubs, including Scunthorpe United.

SLIMMING WORLDʼS GREATEST LOSER Cabbie loses more than half his body weight to take Slimming World’s Greatest Loser title

Former cab driver Mike Smith (57) nearly lost his life to a blood clot when doctors dismissed his increasing breathlessness as a side effect of his 33st weight.

In fact, he had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism – a direct result of his fast-food diet and long hours behind the steering wheel in his job as a taxi driver. The truth luckily came to light when his wife, a former nurse, insisted on emergency treatment.

Then his GP warned that without a change in lifestyle, Mike was at serious risk of another DVT. It was the scare the father of two from Beighton, Sheffield, needed to turn his life around after a 30year struggle with weight gain.

“I was living on crisps, bottles of pop and chocolate. I tried lots of diets but found them all too hard to fit into my daily routine and odd hours. As the weight climbed, my health suffered. I had sleep apnoea and found it hard to get about”.

“My wife showed me an article in Slimming World magazine about a local chap who’d lost weight at Lynne’s Eckington group. It set me thinking ‘I could to that too’ so I decided to go along,” says Mike.

“The first night I sat outside the Eckington Civic Centre for about 20 minutes waiti ng to see if any other men went inside. Finally I followed two men in – only to find they were going to play bingo! I sat at the back and tried to hide, but still I was made very welcome

by Lynne and the rest of the group. It is great that everything is done in a safe confidential and non-judgemental environment, the support I had from Lynne and my fellow members has been the key to my success right from the start.

I lost 7lb in my first week and haven’t looked back.

“The best thing is I’ve never once felt hungry – in fact I’m eating more than I used to. I like a good helping of meat and love curries

I’ve had some stunning match results from local fisheries this week as the hot weather continues to give productive conditions. Garbolino Lindholme hosted a qualifying round of the National ‘Fish o Mania’ competition backed by Sky Sports this week which is testament to the quality of match angling available at the venue.

The weekly open matches have thrown up fantastic weights for competitors; Tim Russel (Garbolino) fished pellets on ‘the method’ to take the Tuesday match with 119lbs, closely followed by Total Fishing’s Wayne Galpin with over 114lb! It got better on Thursday with a winning net of 149lbs, and then the Friday afternoon session saw Pete Turner use prawns to snaffle an amazing 179lbs from peg 63 on Oasis Lake. There are still a few places left for the Garbolino Lindholme 5 day match festival. Beginning on July 26th, the cost for the 5 days is just £120 which includes food after each match. £15 per day pools, top 5 finishers take the prizes. Sponsored by Garbolino, 1st place takes home £2000 and a top notch pole with other cash and tackle awards for the next best bags! Phillip Sanderson of Chapeltown and District AA sent a short report about the over 60’s match held on Westwood Reservoir, High Green this week. 1st place on the day went to Ken Weller with a mixed bag of fish for a top weight of 38lbs 8ozs. One or two nice barbel came out during the match which was beset with rain at the end of the match to give everyone a good soaking before the drive home! More details on 01142845424.

I know that recent reports of fish being taken ‘for the pot’ by anglers who are originally from outside the UK have caused uproar in angling circles. There was an article (since apologised for, but too little too late if you ask me....) in a UK based Russian newspaper advocating and recommending the removal of carp for ‘carp soup’!

It’s not just pools and lakes that have been affected, local rivers have also been subjected to illegal netting by newcomers to the country. The Angling Trust and EA have expressed concern about the issue, but ultimately it will come down to you and I to police the banks and inform the authorities of any foul play. Whilst I would not recommend anglers becoming embroiled in arguments on the bank with people who may be happy to use violence, it is worth keeping a pen and paper to record details of car registrations and descriptions before reporting the incident. Whilst I accept that some cultures consider taking fish as part of their accepted daily life, it isn’t over here, so leave well alone and let us all enjoy the fishing!! We will be watching......

OFF TO MARKET HORSE RACING

This weekend is mundane stuff in the main. There are a couple of group races to look at, the Weatherbys’ Super Sprint at Newbury, the summer jumps at Market Rasen and, over at The Curragh on Sunday there is the Irish Oaks which looks like being a good race.

Starting off at Market Rasen on Saturday: The Listed Totescoop6 Summer Hurdle is run at 2.00 o’clock. It has attracted a large entry of in-form horses so getting the winner will be tricky. However three that stand out to me are Pure Faith (on a four-timer and in the form of its life), Levera (hasn’t raced for quite a while but seems well treated on old form, if fit) and Son of Flicka.

It is this last-named individual that seems to me to have the best chance.

It was a winner last time out in a very commendable time. Trainer Donald McCain can do little wrong at present and has his string in fine fettle.

At 3.35 on the same card they run the Listed Totesport.com Summer Chase.

Again this has attracted a very good entry of in-form horses. Narrowing this one down is also a challenge but my five-strong shortlist comprises: Brooklyn Brownie (a course and distance winner that was only just touched off in the Midlands Summer National at Uttoxeter recently); Stagecoach Amber (seems to be on the upgrade having run two good races on its last two starts); Tempsford and No Panic (two recent course and distance winners that ran really well last time, both beating Chorizo by a neck so there shouldn’t be much between them this time) and Polyfast .This Nicky Henderson inmate is my selection. He ran an absolute cracker of a race at Worcester on his last start, beating Franchoek by 10 lengths with Stagecoach Amber a further 15 lengths adrift. He looks to be in great form, comes from a top stable and has beaten a fair yardstick in Stagecoach Amber by quite some way last time out. I like him a lot but there is still plenty of competition amongst the rest so the price on offer shouldn’t

be too prohibitive.

At Newbury on Friday the Rose Bowl Stakes at 3.10 has attracted a very competitive field. Godolphin’s Al Aasifh is my top rated but he disappointed badly at Royal Ascot and looks best left alone until returning to form. Richard Hannon is carrying all before him this year and his best entry looks to be Cape to Rio (a non-runner at Newmarket last week). The one I like best however is Ed McMahon’s Temple Meads. A winner of his only start in a good time he looks sure to have a bright future.

One word of caution is that he is also entered for the Weatherbys’ Super Sprint the following day. If he ducks out of the Friday race for the Super Sprint on Saturday take the hint.

On Saturday at Newbury the Super Sprint looks a very difficult puzzle with lots of unexposed youngsters from top stables in opposition. If he lines up here I would select Temple Meads but not without some trepidation. As usual in this race Richard Hannon is mob handed – watch for jockey bookings to determine which probably has his best chance. Of the others I have Rod Millman’s Rosina Grey top rated, followed closely by Johnny Portman’s Never Can Stop and Mick Channon’s Golden Shine. All three look likely to be balloted out however if the other entrants stand their ground. The northern challenge is headed by Tim Easterby’s Mappin Time, Richard Fahey’s Arctic Feeling and Tom Dascombe’s Ballista, all of whom look likely to run if connections so choose. If Temple Meads doesn’t run then I have no selection here – the race is too difficult.

Earlier on the same card at Newbury in the Group 3 Shadwell Stakes I am going for Barney McGrew to make it two from two for this column. If he gets out in front again he could take some pegging back, as at Newcastle recently. To my mind the big danger is Markab although High Standing and Doncaster Rover could prove troublesome also.

At The Curragh on Saturday in the Group 3 Tote.com Minstrel Stakes at 3.40 Aidan O’Brien’s Emperor Claudius looks to have a favourite’s chance, having won his last three starts, including a Listed race last time. However, I like the look of Jeremy Noseda’s Arabian Gleam and think that he can lift this prize for the English. Of the other challengers Clive Cox’s Beacon Lodge, Edward Lynam’s Excelerate and Liam McAteer’s Croisultan each have decent chances to upset the likely

favourite at reasonable odds.

On Sunday in the Irish Oaks French trainer Alain Royer-Dupre has a strong hand. His French Oaks winner Sarafina can come out on top here and rates my nap of the weekend. In the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes at 2.35 Dunboyne Express can keep the trophy at home.

NO HAPPY RETURN TO THE VALLEY RUGBY LEAGUE

Back to Don Valley but it wasn’t a happy return as Barrow Raiders edged the game in the second half.

The Eagles had to settle for a losing bonus point which helps keep their bid for a play-off place on track.

The Eagles were in the game until a three try burst late in the second half as Barrow, inspired by half-back Jamie Rooney stormed into the lead.

A try in the final minute from Trevor Exton gave the Eagles the consolation of a losing bonus point as they go into three away games.

The Eagles forwards worked hard with big sets from prop Ryan Hepworth and on loan back rower Mike Burnett.

Rooney was key to Barrow success with his kicking game exploiting the setting sun in the faces of the Eagles players in the second half.

The first half saw the Eagles start well then lose their way as they gave away penalties and possession to Barrow before they came back to level on the stroke of half-time.

Prop forward Mitch Stringer blasted over from close in for the first try with winger Tim Bergin, who has taken on the kicking role, adding the goal to give the Eagles an early lead.

Bergin added a penalty goal but Barrow were coming back with Rooney causing the Eagles problems with his burst and kicking game.

Former Eagles back row Martin Ostler forced his way over and was awarded the try by the video referee and a touchdown from centre Liam Harrison followed by a Rooney goal gave Barrow the lead.

Winger Andy Ballard’s try and Rooney’s goal stretched the Raiders lead but on half-time Matty Brooks made a 30-metre break before sending fullback

Misi Taulapapa in for the try and Bergin’s goal levelled the score at 14-14.

Barrow took the lead back soon after the restart with a try from Chris Young converted by Rooney but the Eagles hit back with fullback Misi Taulapapa crossing and Bergin adding the two points.

The crucial point in the game came as the Eagles had two tries ruled out by the video referee before Barrow took control with tries from winger Andreas Bauer, centre Ned Catic and hooker Nathan Mossop with Rooney kicking two goals.

Right on the hooter a bonus point was salvaged as back rower Trevor Exton took Craig Cook’s short pass on the burst for a consolation try. Bergin added the goal.

The Austrian international, a capture in the summer, joined the other four new signings on show at Field Mill as the Blades slipped to a 1-0 defeat against David Holdsworth’s team.

The result, however, was of little consequence to Ertl, who spent time in midfield and central defence in the fixture. He said: “I’m a versatile player, I can fit in anywhere - I just like to roll my sleeves up and give 100 per cent.

“The result was not a major issue, it was just nice to get started with the matches, I’m really enjoying my time with the club.

“The first game is about fitness and the legs feel a bit heavy but that is normal, the training sessions have been hard so far but that will serve us well later in the season.”

Ertl and the Blades squad jet off to Malta on Monday for further pre-season work and a mini round robin tournament with Maltese teams Hibernians and Vittoriosa Stars.

Ertl added: “I’ve been to Malta before, we played on the island with the Austrian national team it is a beautiful place.

“When I went there it was February but I’m told it is really hot now. We’ll be training twice every day before the match so it will be hard work.”

Sheffield Wednesday have secured the signature of international striker Clinton Morrison, who joins the Owls on a free transfer signing a two-year deal.

The 37-cap Republic of Ireland forward becomes Alan Irvine’s eighth summer signing and underlines Wednesday’s intent to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Morrison will significantly bolster Irvine’s attack given an impressive ratio of around one goal in every three games from a career spanning 14 years to date. The Tooting product has scored 151 goals in total from 413 starts in all competitions.

The vastly experienced striker began his career with Crystal Palace in 1997 before moving to Birmingham City for £4.2m five years later. He rejoined Palace in 2005 for £2m before his second stint at Selhurst Park ended in 2008, when the 31-year-old signed for Coventry City.

Morrison was out of contract at the Ricoh Arena this summer and joins Chris Sedgwick, Jon Otsemobor, Paul Heffernan, Daniel Jones, Giles Coke, Gary Teale and Neil Mellor as Irvine’s summer signings.

The striker’s squad number will be 30.

KOZZY IN LANE RETURN

He added that the Club was still waiting for specialists’ reports on loan signing Simon Walton’s knee scan after he damaged it at Mansfield at the weekend.

He told Wednesday Player: “It’s been a long and tough week but it has been beneficial. We are definitely heading in the right direction in terms of fitness.

“I knew it was going to be tough and it didn’t disappoint us in that respect. The lads have all worked hard, everyone got on with it and we look fit and strong.”

Wednesday continue their pre-season campaign with two matches this evening against Stocksbridge Park Steels and Hallam FC, followed by a trip to Grimsby on Saturday.

With the new season approaching, Sedgwick will be looking to increase his match sharpness and use the remaining friendlies to prepare fully for kick-off on 7 August.

He added: “Everyone wants to be in that team on the first day of the season and everyone is looking to impress the manager and try to get in there. These games are when we have got to do it.”
