LAST CHANCE TO NOMINATE YOUR SHEFFIELD LEGEND It’s your last chance to have a say in who you would like to join the exclusive ‘walk of fame’ outside Sheffield’s Town Hall. Members of the public are being invited to nominate their Sheffield Legend for 2010 and join the likes of local heroes Sean Bean, Def Leppard, Seb Coe and Michael Palin. The people of Sheffield are being asked to nominate their favourites, then an independent panel will be given the tough task of choosing this year’s Legend. Sheffield Legends honour the city’s heroes from various walks
of life – from the arts to science and from sport to industry. They have a special plaque set into the pavement ‘Hollywood Boulevard-style’ – believed to be the first of its kind in this country. Those honoured will be invited for an ‘unveiling’ ceremony outside the Town Hall in the heart of the city. When the initiative was launched five years ago hundreds of nominations for their heroes to become Sheffield Legends were received from the public through the post and via the internet. These were considered by an independent Selection Board representing
various sectors in the city - the arts, sport, education, media and modern businesses - which was chaired by the Lord Mayor. Lord Mayor, Cllr Graham Oxley said: “This is an ideal opportunity to nominate those who have brought recognition to Sheffield at national or international level. We already have some wonderful Legends in our ‘walk of fame’ and there are several personalities who have a strong claim to join them.” Those eligible for the awards must either have been born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city and must have achieved recognition

Celebrating 150 years of Fish and Chips 1860 –There is still a lot of debate about whether the first fish and chip shop opened in London or the North. Was the first chip shop Joseph Malin’s in London’s East End, or was it Mr Lee’s chippie on Oldham market, Lancashire? 1863 – Mr Lee, expanded and opened a chip shop in Oldham town, the second chip shop to be opened in Britain – according to Joseph Malin that is! 1920 – The mechanical potato peeler was invented, which was a great boon for chippies, as traditional chips are made from peeled potatoes. But remember you can cook chips with their skins on – they taste great and it saves time too 1920 onwards – Fish and chips shops were called ‘Fried Fish Shops’ and as can be seen at the Black Country Museum, where a replica chippie from Willenhall can be seen, they were often converted from the front room of a house
1940 – Fish and Chips were one of the few foods that were not rationed during World War 11 1960’s - Today’s most popular potato variety, the Maris Piper was first commercially grown

Fried fish began in working-class London at the beginning of Queen Victoria’s Reign, selling the leftovers from Billingsgate fish market. Fried ‘chipped’ potatoes appeared in Lancashire around the 1860s the two were served together somewhere around 1870.

New data reveals that the average person in Sheffield is clinically overweight, with a BMI of 27 . Now anyone concerned about their weight and health, or that of their family or loved ones, is being invited to join a campaign to tackle obesity in the area. The ‘Let’s Beat It Together in Sheffield campaign has been launched by Slimming World after their UK BMI map showed that six out of 10 people in Yorkshire and the Humber are overweight or obese, placing them at risk of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The national slimming club, the UK’s leading weight loss company, has now launched a community weight loss challenge in key parts of the region. Sheffield Slimming World groups are on a mission
to raise awareness in the local community of the benefits of healthy eating and moderate activity. The message is that with the right support, making small changes to our daily routines can be easy and can make a huge difference to our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The campaign will encourage local residents in communities across the whole nation to join a 12 week challenge to tackle obesity. KELHAM ISLAND TAVERN WINS NATIONAL TITLE CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today crowned the Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield, as its National Pub of the Year for 2009. Last year, the Kelham Island Tavern picked up the same award, making it the first pub in CAMRA’s history to win its most coveted accolade in consecutive years. Only two other pubs have ever won the award twice- the Fat Cat, Norwich (1998, 2004), and the Swan, Little Totham, Essex (2002, 2005). CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year competition analyses all the criteria that make a good pub including the quality of the beer, atmosphere, décor, customer service, and all-round value of the pub visit. The competition is overseen by CAMRA’s 110,000-strong membership. On a local level, the pub has held the title of CAMRA Yorkshire Regional Pub of the Year on four occasions. The pub is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide
Sirs On my clubland travels I heard that the Handsworth Social Club faces closure; having spoke to a couple of committee men people can rest assured that it isn’t - nothing but rumours. In fact the latest committee have done a very good job at getting the club out of the red and into the black. So it s well done to them. Having said that, it s stillan uphill struggle without its missing weekend members. It s said that the previous committee turned the club into a creche; I.e. children running about uncontrolled etc; that s mainly why the members kept away. But I m glad to say that s all changed. the fewer children who now come occasionally are well behaved and under control. We ve all had to put up with the no smoking bar, price increases, but can club goers imagine Handsworth without its clubs; so come on members, support your clubs, you are needed. Both players are doing a tremendous job and the band is stronger as a result.” However, the versatility doesn’t end there: percussionists Nikki Turnbull and Tim Parris have both taken up brass instruments and turn out regularly with Stannington Training Band on flugel horn and euphonium. Also sharing his musical skills, Training Band trombonist, Mikael Thery, has just signed up as 3rd percussionist for the senior band!
When Stannington Brass Band play at The Yorkshire Regional Championship in Bradford next month there will be a new rising star in the principal trombone seat. Fourteen year old Lewis Bettles, who lives in Stannington, joined the band in 2008 as third percussionist. Multi-talented, he soon earned his stripes at concerts and contests, performing xylophone and trombone solos with a confidence and proficiency that many of his older counterparts would envy. Playing since the age of 9, Lewis has a place at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music studying trombone and percussion as well attending Bradfield School in Sheffield where he’s working towards 11 GCSE’s. His talents have not gone unnoticed by Musical Director, Derek Renshaw, who commented “Stannington is very fortunate to have such versatility within the band and this allows us more options

G CASINO REFLECTS ON OPENING MONTHS What prompted Rank Group to move its casino in Sheffield from the old Grosvenor Casino site, to the former Mecca Bingo site on Duchess Road? Since the launch of the first G Casino in 2006, the modern and contemporary brand has been a success story for Rank Group and we have a big ambition for the creation of twenty G Casinos in the UK by 2012. We have a continuing mission to change perceptions of casinos and position them alongside any other mainstream leisure destination. The new G Casino offers a fun and friendly atmosphere with a fantastic late-night bar and restaurant, live entertainment, along with regular poker tournaments for experienced players and beginners alike. How have your first couple of months as the General Manager of the G Casino Sheffield been? Since the launch of the casino in early December, we have enjoyed a fantastic gaming atmosphere and a great relationship with both our new and old members. The casino has a great team of staff behind it, and regularly working with them to ensure we offer great customer service and share gaming knowledge, is a great job to have. Although I manage the team, each role is important to ensure that G Casino remains a fantastic night out for both experienced gamers and beginners just looking for some fun. What challenges have you faced in your role? What I love about my job is that each day is different, and I find myself being presented with a new challenge to overcome every day. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? I really enjoy my job, otherwise I wouldn’t have been in the industry for twenty-nine years. Probably the most fun has been at the launch party in December, where I got to meet a whole host

of local people, and we really did the new casino justice. Seeing the casino in operation is also incredibly rewarding, as it’s great to see people enjoying themselves, which they tell me all the time! I also love seeing my team develop and really succeed in their jobs. They have great fun interacting with the customers, which gives them personal satisfaction, so it’s a win-win situation. How have local people taken to the casino as an entertainment spot? The reaction of the local people to the new casino is fantastic, with people coming to use the facilities for nights out, even without playing the games. We believe the G Casino offers a completely different night out to anything on offer already in Sheffield. Coupled with unrivalled customer service and a wide choice of activities, including a late-night bar, 60-seater restaurant, sports lounge, gaming tables and 100 seat Poker Room, the casino also features live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night. How have you enticed new members, who may not have regularly used the old Grosvenor Casino? I actually don’t think we need to entice them so to speak. There was a lot of hype about the new casino when we opened so I think people were intrigued to see what the new venue looked like. Once they can in they’ve realised it’s a fantastic place to come for a night out. We also run promotions throughout the year which are targeted at different customer segments, whether it’s poker, table gaming, or food and beverage. In addition, we have a range of great value Experience Packages available to all our customers, which offer everything you need for a night out and are particularly popular with
newcomers to the casino. Have you held any events that have been particularly popular within the community? We regularly host a range of events and get involved with charity fundraising to help the community and wider causes. We recently managed to raise funds for the Haiti disaster, as well as host regular poker tournaments and a fun Wags night. We also have a national charity partner, Marie Curie Cancer Care, and will be planning many different kinds of events to raise money for them throughout the rest of the year. An event that we are particularly looking forward to is the national G Casino talent search ‘G’s Got Talent’, which is coming to Sheffield for the regional heats and north final in February and March. This looks to be a fun event, with local people competing for a performing contract with Stage Palm Entertainments. We are really looking forward to showcasing all of the talent that Sheffield has to offer, and hopefully one of our local acts can win the entire competition! What new facilities does the G Casino Sheffield offer that the old Grosvenor didn’t have? The biggest wow is the look and feel of the G Casino. The contemporary design makes it a really nice place to socialise. The new casino has far more floor space, allowing us to vastly expand the services we offer, as well as entirely re-vamp the interior to create a much more modern-looking venue. The casino features 10 gaming tables, and 33 electronic gaming terminals which are linked to live roulette games, as well as an automated wheel and semiautomated blackjack game. We also have a dedicated card room, with 110 seats, offering private poker tuition, as well as national poker events, such as the GUKPT. The casino’s lounge and restaurant offers space for members to relax and eat a wide variety of dishes, whilst the late night cocktail bar is a great place for nights out.

In 2007, a nomadic reindeer herder in north-western Siberia came across what he initially thought was a reindeer carcass. This carcass actually turned out to be one of the most important discoveries of recent times; the most perfectly preserved woolly mammoth ever unearthed. Only a few mammoths have previously been found, but none in such an astounding condition. This one-month-old baby mammoth named Lyuba, walked the tundra around 40,000 years ago and despite being in perfect health, mysteriously died. News of Lyuba quickly spread around the world and many questions about why she died, what she can reveal about the ice age and climate change, if her DNA can be analysed, what amazing facts could be brought to light have fascinated the scientific community ever since. Now, an elite team of paleontologists and zoologists, computer science and genetics expert take on the gripping, world-wide forensic investigation in Waking the Baby Mammoth in the hope of finding answers about this creature’s life.

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was: “Name seven advantages of “Mothers Milk.” Worth 70 points or none at all. One student, who had partied late the night before, was frustrated to think of seven advantages. He wrote: 1. It is perfect formula for the child. 2. It provides immunity against several diseases. 3. It is always at the right temperature. 4. It is inexpensive. 5. It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6. It is always available as needed. And then, the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang, indicating the end of the test, he wrote: 7. It comes in such cute containers. He got an “A”.
It takes something special to get me out of the house when the weather is freezing outside and I had no problem on Thursday night braving the elements to go along to see an old friend of mine, and excellent entertainer, Tom Collins. Tom’s friendly personality and superb vocal talent always guarantees a great night out, and he always manages to find one or two in the audience and involves them in his act, not least of all his father who has an excellent singing voice. As I have been in a serious relationship with Caron, the one true love of my life for eleven months, this year was our first valentines day together and I wanted to make it a bit special for her. When she presented me with a dozen red roses, it made me feel that my present to her, some shampoo and conditioner, was a bit cheapskate and less than romantic. I resolved therefore to make Saturday and Sunday night a bit special. I had booked to tickets for a valentine’s dinner at Dronfields Hilltop Club. The evening ws a
great success with excellent food together with top class cabaret provided by long standing local top duo The Cadillacs who I was delighted to hear them mention their former frontman, the late great Barrie Glynn. Top of the bill was a comedian I had not seen before, Yorkshireman Joey Howard who was absolutely hilarious for an hour and a half. The night was an unqualified success for organiser Dick Armitage who does much to ensure the success of this well run club. So far so good in my efforts to ensure that Caron had a great weekend and Sunday night we went to the Mill at Brimington which is owned by former Sheffield Wednesday and England centre half Peter Swan, which is run by his son Flick. Unfortunately the romantic night stuttered a bit when Peter came down in the bar. No prizes for guessing who I spent the whole night talking to about the good old days and football in general. Fortunately, we had also gone out with a couple of good friends, both female,
so Caron had the opportunity for some girlie talk and I escaped unscathed. We are now in the run up to the general election, where with any luck we shall be rid of the present lot in power and it will be left to David Cameron to lead us out of recession and put the great back in Great Britain. Apparently this government will handsomely reward anybody informing on any benefit cheats, with as much as five hundred pounds. This is turning this country into a nation of bounty hunters. There is a great deal wrong with things in this country with disturbing racist texts circulating on a daily basis. Unless something is done to close the door to immigrants, I fear much civil unrest. At present, we are the most heavily taxed nation in the western world and the money generated is spent supporting many non-British people and fighting other countries wars. How stupid is that? Golden pop phenomenon Mika presents his dazzling live show after gaining millions of fans worldwide The singer arrives in Sheffield on the 18th with an exclusive show at The O2 Academy. MIKA (born Michael Holbrook Penniman) is Beirut-born, and was raised in both Paris and London. He first appeared on Radio 1 in September 2006, and has a background in classical songwriting. His long awaited first album “Life In Cartoon Motion” was commercially released in 2007. It has a coming of age theme, and deals with the transition from childhood to his current position in life. The second single from the album Grace Kelly seemed to garner more media attention, it took the UK charts by storm;
Grace Kelly charted at Nº3 with downloads alone, and then went straight to the Nº1 spot! He will be performing songs from his new second album “The Boy Who Knew Too Much” and the main single from that album is “We Are Golden”. (So expect to hear that little ditty live). Recently Mika gave an overthe-top performance during his sold-out show in Los Angeles. He has struggled to get radio airplay in the US, but the L.A. show brought out a large and loyal following who sang along to every chorus and cheered loudly at every spectacle. “We’ve had trouble with radio in this country, but ours is a career that’s based on playing live,” Mika told the crowd before launching into ‘Grace Kelly’. The evening began with a giant balloon that popped to reveal a woman inside dressed as an angel, only hinting at the antics to come. During ‘Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)’, Mika’s

ode to large ladies, a giant female blow-up doll hovered over the stage while three scantily-clad, plus-size women performed a dance routine replete with flips and cartwheels alongside the singer. Later, a giant skeleton marionette trotted onto the stage and gave Mika a big hug. Before the night was through, the singer engaged in a shirtless drum-off with his tiara-wearing drummer on flower-covered steel trashcans. The audience ate it up, shouting and cheering more vigorously the camper things got. reviews by presley artist: The Human League DVD: Live at The Dome Feb release date: Mon 22nd Technically this is a re-release but Drag wasn’t around 5 years ago so we’re gonna review it………….so there! Probably along with Def Leppard the League are this cities biggest musical exponent. When I first heard their two first albums I was knocked sideways. Reproduction and then Travelogue were like nothing I’d ever heard before. It was so cool to be into the League, they were very underground, hardly anyone new who they were and that was appealing also. If you’re into electronic music then these two albums are a necessity to have in your collection. They also did the best version of ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ that’s ever been released. Then the band split into two, producing Heaven 17 and a two member Human League. Phil Oakey got the girls into the band, no need to go over the infamous story. They wanted to be more like Donna Summer than Kraftwerk and then like magic they’re No.1 all over the world……….brilliant! To the small hardcore of underground fans this was a bit galling at the time, to suddenly get everyone on the street saying “Hey have you heard of The Human League?

The thing is, I didn’t expect this collaboration at all. It’s gonna boost Lady GaGa’s career massively in America. I’m glad about that because whatever you may think of her at least she’s bought a bit of weird glam back into music and I applaud that. So does this odd collaboration work………….hell yeah! It sounds totally natural, as if they’ve been working together for years. The only one annoying thing for me is that to please the American market (I reckon) they’ve put that irritating

With brilliant keyboardist Neil Sutton and electronic wizard David Beavers, the sounds on this gig are not only spot on but have a freshness about them and feel totally modern. Apart from the huge amount of hits, for example ‘Love Action’ ‘The Lebanon’ ‘Fascination’ Don’t You Want Me’ ‘Human’ Mirror Man’…………… and tons more. You also get songs such as ‘Tell Me When’ ‘Heart Like A Wheel’ and ‘All I Ever Wanted’ which may not be quite so well known but are fantastic singles, easily as good as their biggest hits. Then at the end, when they do ‘Empire State Human’ from their very early repertoire you realise that all is good in the world. The staging on this gig is great too, very unusually everything is white and it’s such a striking image that it looks brilliant on TV. They’re from Sheffield, you’re from Sheffield (and aroundabouts) so go out and buy it! Plus look out for brand new material from the League sometime, hopefully this year, inside knowledge tells me it’s a bit darker and a bit edgier, but shhhhh……. you didn’t hear it from me. effect on parts of the vocal that is on virtually every American rap/ pop tune nowadays. But that aside, a good pop song fuelled with a bit of soul.

We needed a little more of that but I am not going to have a pop at the lads because it was a hard game and I am pleased with the result,” he added. Gary Roberts netted the crucial second goal and Ronnie was pleased with the attacking contribution of his midfield: “It was a great finish and with a little bit of luck we might see more of that. These discussions have been with a view to find an appropriate structure that will allow us to become part of the Wednesday family. “What I can confirm is that at no stage have we discussed the possibility of buying shares in Sheffield Wednesday plc. We are pursuing a deal by which our capital and skills can be utilised to assist the current management team, led by Chairman Lee Strafford and Chief Executive Nick Parker, to fully implement their business plan for the Club. “We have been impressed, not just by the rich history of Sheffield Wednesday, but with the opportunity that exists to work with the current management and once again make the Club a major force within English football. “That said, there is no guarantee that any deal will be completed. DOMINANT BLADES SECURE HOME WIN
The Blades dominated in all areas on the way to completing a Championship double over Bristol City. Second half goals from strikers Henri Camara and Darius Henderson - his fourth over the Robins this season - ensured United ended a run of four games without a defeat. There were a number of impressive performers as United kept the pressure on the division’s top six. Bunn returned in goal as one of four changes made to the starting line up by Blackwell. The attacking trio of Ward, Camara and Henderson were also recalled. Bennett, Quinn, Evans and Cresswell missed out but all took up places on the bench. Teenager Bartley made his home debut, whilst for the visitors Iwelumo started after signing on loan from Wolves. Within United’s 4-4-2 system, Henderson and Camara were the new front two with Ward and Yeates adding pace and trickery from the flanks. The back four remained unchanged. As in the previous week’s home encounter, the opening minutes saw Bunn attempting to recover from a collision with an opposition striker. This time it was Agyemang and the goalkeeper who went for the same ball but on this occasion Bunn did not need treatment. City’s front two of Iwelumo and Agyemang both had weak headers in the opening five minutes and, for United, Ward’s delivery from the left was straight across the face of goal and Williamson’s delicate chip drifted into the arms of Gerken. From as early as 15 minutes it was clear that Ward and Yeates would be switching wings in order to drag the City defenders out of position, the duo combined on 17 minutes but Camara
could not find the target. Twice, in the space of a couple of minutes, Henderson had the chance to open the scoring but he was unable to test Gerken with headers. The first, from Geary’s cross, was wide despite the big man being unmarked and then he headed over, under pressure from Orr, follow a deep Ward cross. Sproule’s long range effort was straight at Bunn and Geary was the first to be booked, for a foul on Nyatanga, but United had started brightly and Ward, Yeates and Williamson were involved in some neat stuff approaching the City penalty area. Bartley made an impression at both ends of the pitch, firstly preventing Iwelumo getting a shot in from Orr’s cross and then marauding forward to find himself on the end of a halfclearance, but his shot deflected off Fontaine before falling nicely for the visiting goalkeeper. Gerken was called upon twice to save from Yeates, a former teammate at Colchester, as half-time approached. The first was from a powerful volley from 25-yards and then the stopper gathered a cross under his bar. With Montgomery and Williamson dominating the midfield battle and Ward and Yeates looking a threat from the wide areas, United could feel themselves unlucky not to have the lead when the referee’s half-time whistle blew. Within 70 seconds of the restart Camara poked an effort at Gerken, which proved to be a taster of things to come. On 49 minutes Bartley’s ball down the right channel saw CAMARA produce a fabulous first touch before firing into the top corner of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance. The striker then led the lengthy celebrations in front of the Kop. Hartley and Nyatanga were both
booked for the visitors and City’s attempts to get back into the game - Orr shooting well over and Bunn collecting a Sproule cross in front of Agyemang were jaded. Back at the other end, United added a deserved second just past the hour mark. Ward, on the left, delivered an inswinging cross and HENDERSON nipped in ahead of Carey and added the necessary flick to beat Gerken. To compound City’s day, Carey’s header from Hartley’s corner struck the top of the crossbar and then Gerken and Fontaine were involved in a sickening collision. Fortunately, both players were fit to continue. Not content with sitting on the lead, the Blades continued to attack and Gerken denied Camara on two occasions in the same move. Quinn replaced the tiring Camara and Cresswell came on for Henderson but Blackwell maintained the 4-4-2 formation right to the end - which included five stoppage time minutes. Gaffer’s verdict Kevin Blackwell got the response he wanted from his ailing squad against Bristol City and said: “I thought we were excellent today and really took the game to them. At half-time I asked the lads to try and be more purposeful in the final third of the pitch because we had had a lot of possession around the edge of their area without really penetrating. “And we started the secondhalf well and kept going and it was the best we have played in quite a while. The team looked accomplished and the movement and chances we created were very pleasing. “We had the players who can play with the ball all wanted to be on the ball this afternoon. Players like Yeates are comfortable with the ball at his feet, Lee Williamson the same, and Jamie Ward was a bit more like his old self - there was so much more purpose and freedom of expression from us. Darius Henderson, recalled to the starting line-up after being on the bench in midweek, netted United’s second goal and put in a shift worthy of his manager’s belief in him: “He showed that he is so much more than just a big target man. I spoke to him beforehand and asked him to go out and show people how good he is and he even dropped too deep at times.” Blackwell kept the same defence which in itself is a rarity these days and said afterwards: “I was so proud of the back four considering how little they have played together and young Kyle Bartley came through it with flying colours. “For an eighteen year old he showed great composure under terrific physical pressure from Chris Iwelumo. Perhaps Gary Johnson thought that was going to be our Achilles heel but Kyle met the challenge and played from there. “But he also had some valuable help from Nyron Nosworthy who talked him through his two games with us. “I thought Bristol City came for a point and we had to grind them down, but we were patient and weren’t afraid to take an extra touch to try and make something happen instead of panicking.” With Bartley becoming the 20th debutant already this season and thus demonstrating the problems faced by the frustrated manager who knows again that injury will cause more disruption in midweek: “I would love to keep this set of players fit and keep the same team because it showed real potential, but that is not going to happen for Tuesday at Forest because two players from today are injured and already out.”

Football’s unwritten rule There are many factors that make up the unwritten football mantra. One is that football is undoubtedly a results business. Another is that football fans can be as demanding as any set of people on the planet. So after Sheffield United’s first win in five games against Bristol City on Saturday, both of these are worthy of discussion. During the recent mini-run of four games without a win, a lot has been said on internet message boards and radio phone-ins about Kevin Blackwell, the style of football Sheffield United employs, the quality of players in our squad and every other element that seemingly might be affecting our promotion push. It has often been said that we don’t play a particularly attractive brand of football, but fans can generally get over this, if that football is bringing about positive results. There is no doubt Blackwell’s record as Blades chief has been exemplary, and his win percentage rivals that of any manager in my living memory. It is when the results falter slightly, and one-dimensional performances are combined with negative results, that fans frustrations boil over. That being said, the quality of football played at times against Bristol City makes a mockery of all the disagreements that have gone on between Blades followers of late. In essence we are our own worst enemy. As fans we know we are capable of turning out the sort of performance that enabled us to sweep a poor Bristol outfit aside with consummate ease. Kevin Blackwell set a marker with the quality of his team selection on Saturday, and the players set a standard with their performances. But by showing us this quality of football on a semi-regular basis, we are naturally going to want more of it. So a bit more of the same Mr Blackwell, and there may still be life in the season yet.
