firefighter frank honoured by red plaque

A commemorative plaque was unveiled in Sheffield on Thursday to honour firefighter Frank Mallinson, who died in the line of duty on this day 57 years ago. The plaque is located at Brown’s Bar, Norfolk Street, where a fire broke out on 7 August 1968 at what was then the Little Mermaid Café.

Frank Mallinson was seriously injured by an explosion at the incident, and was taken to hospital where he died eight days later.

He was 28 years old, and lived in Sheffield with his wife and two

children.

150 firefighters attended his funeral in Sheffield that month at City Road Crematorium, forming a guard of honour.

The plaque is part of the Red Plaque project, run by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and funded by the Firefighters 100 Lottery.

The event was organised by FBU South Yorkshire officials, and the ceremony was attended by serving and retired firefighters; FBU representatives including the general secretary; and

representatives of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright said:

“Every firefighter who dies in the line of duty leaves behind family, friends, and colleagues whose lives are changed forever. And with each tragedy, we’re reminded of how important it is to learn, to act, and to do everything we can to stop it from happening again. These plaques are placed in communities across

the country as a lasting reminder of the firefighters who gave their lives. They help ensure those individuals aren’t forgotten—and that their stories remain part of local history. Today is about remembering Frank, and provide a

respectful and fitting tribute for his friends, family and colleagues — Frank was a firefighter who gave his service to others, and who will always be remembered by the Fire Brigades Union.

sector safari extended reducing fly-tipping

Sheffield City Council has launched a new campaign, ‘Your Rubbish, Your Responsibility’ to raise awareness about responsible waste disposal and to reduce fly-tipping across the city. Everyone should be able to live in great neighbourhoods that they are happy to call home, but all too often fly-tipping blights our landscape.

Councillor Joe Otten commented “We are aware that there are criminals who illegally fly-tip and this is an issue that we will continue to tackle. Waste gets into their hands in different ways and through this campaign we are highlighting just how much residents can help us combat this. Statistics show that the incorrect disposal of household waste accounts for more than half of all fly-tipped waste both locally and nationally. Everyone has a legal duty to dispose of their waste correctly. This campaign highlights the options available, how to avoid unknowingly fly-tipping, and the consequences for those who break the rules. It is important residents are aware that they have a legal ‘duty of care’ to dispose of their waste correctly. Anyone who offers to dispose of waste for a fee should be an authorised waste carrier and it’s the responsibility of householders to carry out all checks that we outline. If waste is taken from your house by an unauthorised waste carrier and then fly-tipped, you can be liable and given a fixed penalty notice or even prosecuted. The same waste carrier authority checks apply to scrap metal collectors and items of scrap should not be placed outside your property in the hope that a scrap collector is passing by. We are asking residents to do the right checks to help us eliminate this type of activity and protect our environment. ” Many people who are interviewed after they have either deposited waste inappropriately at bring sites, by street litter bins or passed their waste to a third-party claim that they didn’t realise that they had committed an offence at all. This work is designed to make sure that everyone knows the difference between correct and incorrect disposal of waste. The

evidence shows that most people think of fly-tipping as a rogue operator dumping a lot of waste on a country lane, in a watercourse or in a farmer’s field but that accounts for a much smaller percentage of overall fly tipping. Those offenders most likely know that what they are doing is unacceptable and unlawful.

The campaign supports the Council’s Sheffield Fly Tipping Reduction Strategy 2025-2026–together we reduce fly-tipping, and whilst the figures show that fly-tipping in Sheffield has reduced from 12,366 incidents per year in 2021/22 to 11,387 in 2022/23, many cases still stem from residents unknowingly using illegal waste carriers.

Key advice for residents is to:

• check that waste carriers are registered (look for a CBDL or CBDU number

• verify registration on the Environment Agency’s public register

• pay by card and request

a receipt

• ask where your waste is going and how it will be disposed of

• note the registration of the vehicle being used to transport your waste

• report fly-tipping if you see it taking place Council waste services provide residents with:

• Blue and black bin collections

• Five free household waste recycling centres

• Chargeable green bin and bulky waste collections (up to twelve items can be collected)

Residents are reminded that fly-tipping includes:

• putting white goods or scrap metal out for collection on the street. All scrap collections should be arranged with an authorised collector

• leaving extra bags next to domestic bins

• misusing recycling points

• placing unwanted but useable items free for collection on the street. Instead, these can be placed outside within the boundary of a property, donated to friends and neighbours, given to a charity organisation, or advertised as available for collection

Residents are urged not to touch or move flytipped waste, as it may be hazardous or contain evidence and report:

• Fly-tipping: www. sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 2734567

• Illegal waste carriers to the Environment Agency

Bin lorries are being used in an innovative project to map mobile phone coverage across South Yorkshire to help to identify signal ‘not spots’ and improve digital connectivity for residents and businesses.

The 12-month, £34,000 project, being funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), will allow residents to check their coverage at home, on the commute and at work so that they can make an informed choice before signing up to a mobile deal.

Working with mobile analytics specialists Streetwave, the project is gathering real-time data on mobile signal strength, upload and download speeds, and network frequency across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. It uses Streetwave’s specialist measuring equipment, which is being carried on recycling trucks and street sweepers during their regular rounds. The data collected will then be used to create a free, clickable online map and postcode checker, allowing people to see which of the UK’s four main mobile network operators – EE, 02, Three and Vodafone, offer the best coverage in their area.

The project has begun in Barnsley and will

be rolled out across Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham, with a second full round of mapping to follow to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Mayor Oliver Coppard, said: “Digital connectivity isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. Whether it’s accessing public services, running a business or just staying in touch with friends and family. Too many people in South Yorkshire are still stuck in mobile ‘not spots’ where coverage is patchy or non-existent. That’s why it’s important this project is giving us the data we need to change. To make sure everyone in South Yorkshire can get the signal they need, wherever they live.”

This vital mapping project will provide a detailed, street-by-street view of mobile connectivity and coverage, helping to highlight areas with poor or no signal, supporting SYMCA’s work to push for better coverage across the region and assist local authority planning teams when considering applications for new masts and infrastructure. The postcode checker and interactive map will go live once data collection is complete in each area.

It’s expected that initially Barnsley’s data will be available to the public in the coming weeks.

water usage falling

Yorkshire Water says that customers careful efforts to save water have done more than Storm Floris to protect water levels this week, as domestic water usage across the county has fallen by 10% since temporary hosepipe restrictions came into effect on 11 July. Reservoir stocks have dropped by 2.7% over the past week due to rivers being low which means the company has not been able to abstract as much water from them as they normally would so they have had to rely on water from reservoirs to compensate. River levels have now improved so river abstractions are increasing in accordance with permits. Although Yorkshire did see some rainfall later on in the week, February through to July has been exceptionally warm and dry so sustained rainfall is needed to make its way into reservoirs and recharge them. The ground is very dry at the moment so it is taking longer than normal for rainfall to saturate reservoir catchments.

Dave Kaye of Yorkshire Water, said: “Gardens

were grateful for the rainfall over the last couple of days, despite the intermittent downpours as Storm Floris passed over the region, reservoir levels fell by 2.7% over the last seven days. Total stocks dropped to 44.7%, well below the average of 75.9% for this time of year, as we continue to distribute over 1.2 billion litres of water every day. Customers are the real powerhouse here and we’d like to thank those who put away their hosepipes to help save water where they can in what has been an extremely dry 2025. Since restrictions were put in place, we’ve seen a 10% reduction in domestic water use which is really helping to reduce the strain on our reservoirs.

We are doing our bit as our teams continue to work around the clock to find and fix leaks as quickly as they can. We’d like to thank our customers for their vigilance in spotting and reporting leaks when they see them.”

SheffieLd Set to weLcoMe L andMark 10th edition of britiSh art Show

Sheffield is one of five UK cities selected to host the major, multi-site exhibition.

Sheffield has been named as one of the host cities for the British Art Show – one of the UK’s most prestigious art events. This landmark multi-venue exhibition will tour to Sheffield in October 2027 thanks to a partnership between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Museums, Site Gallery, Yorkshire Artspace and Arts Catalyst.

British Art Show 10 opens in Coventry later this year, before touring to Swansea, Bristol, Sheffield and Newcastle Gateshead. This tenth edition marks the first time the

exhibition will travel to five cities across the UK in its most extensive presentation to date. Returning to Sheffield for the first time since 1985, British Art Show 10 will go on display across multiple venues in the city, including Graves Gallery, Millennium Gallery, Site Gallery and Yorkshire Artspace, and will be accompanied be a vibrant programme of events, display and activities.

British Art Show is the largest and most significant recurring exhibition of contemporary art in the UK. Kirstie Hamilton, Director of Programmes at Sheffield Museum said “We are thrilled to see the British Art

Show return to Sheffield, over 40 years since it was first established in the city. The concept of the British Art Show was informed by Sheffield’s then Director of Arts, Frank Constantine in the 1970s, so it is fitting that it should return to the city for this landmark 10th iteration. We are delighted to be working with Ekow Eshun, the team at Hayward Gallery Touring and our colleagues in the city to bring the most engaging British contemporary art to Sheffield. Visual art is an important aspect of the city’s past and present, and as we look to the future of the Graves Gallery, we’re excited to be able to introduce dialogues with the works in the exhibition

and Sheffield’s own significant visual art collection. In making the best in contemporary art available to people on their doorstep, we have a fantastic opportunity to start meaningful conversations and inspire the next generation of Sheffield artists.”

It was launched here in Sheffield in 1979 and takes place every five years. Over the past four decades, the exhibition has reached over 2.3 million people, highlighted new trends in contemporary art and reflected a changing Britain.

Under the vision of Ekow Eshun, who has been announced curator of British Art Show 10,

the exhibit will provide a vital overview of the most exciting art produced in the UK during the past five years. Further information about the Southbank Centre’s 75th

anniversary programme will be announced in September, but will include a national programme that visits all four nations of the UK, of which the British Art Show is part.

FOOTBALLR UNDUP

United’s 2025/26 campaign began with defeat at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening. Despite a goal from Tyrese Campbell, the Blades suffered an opening day reversal at the hands of the Robins. New boss Sellés selected two summer arrivals for their full league debuts for the Blades, with Bindon and Barry named in the starting XI as Soumaré and Ukaki were named amongst the substitutes. Hamer captained the side, with Robinson fit enough for a place on the bench. City started brightly and opened the scoring on five minutes through a TWINE free kick following a Hamer foul, but after a couple of corners in quick succession, the hosts restored parity in the 14th minute with CAMPBELL smashing home from inside the penalty area after O’Hare won the ball back high and claimed the assist. Barry and Burrows were both denied by Vitek in quick succession, but it was the visitors who scored the third goal of the game as MCCRORIE struck low and hard into Cooper’s far post after Riis and then Twine had fashioned the opening from a direct break forward. The Blades continued to enjoy the better of the game, with Barry again denied before the interval, prior to Vitek

making himself big to save from Peck who try to divert Seriki’s shot into the goal. The second period got off to the worse possible start as MEHMETTI added a third less than a minute after the restart and on 51 minutes, TWINE was fortunate to see his shot deflect off Bindon and wrong foot Cooper before nestling in the net. United made a triple change as the hour mark approached, with Robinson, Oné and Cannon thrown into the action, but with the clocking against the Blades, Riis wasted a big chance to add to City’s tally, before substitute McCallum stung the palms of Vitek at the other end. With time running out, United piled on the pressure, but Knight somehow blocked Cannon from close range before Peck was acrobatically denied by the impressive Vitek as City saw out five minutes of added time to leave with the spoils. Rubén Sellés said he will shoulder the blame for Saturday’s opening day loss to Bristol City at Bramall Lane. Reflecting on the 4-1 reversal against the Robins, Sellés remarked: “Obviously I’m massively disappointed, we came to have a good performance in front of our fans, but nothing went the way we wanted. There are some tactical aspects we must improve, but

LA PLATA S.C.

after we’d equalised, we had chances to change the dynamic of the game, we didn’t, and they did. Their third goal was a massive factor in the game and then we concede the fourth one too quick. There are a lot of things to improve and that was not good enough from anyone, starting from my side. We were not good in transition, defensively we were too open in the centre of the pitch, we never recovered in the proper way, they won too many second balls. We need to be more organised and structured.” Sellés added: “It is my responsibility to make us more structured in those moments, if we’d have scored a second and third it would be my responsibility also, so it is down to me to make the team realise these are key moments and we can’t be left open. If we can’t score a goal when we are on top, we have to make sure it doesn’t happen on the opposite side, those are the moments we weren’t good enough and must correct. I will not make excuses.”

sad Owls unluCKy

Ten-man Wednesday battled the odds for much of their Championship opener but ultimately succumbed to huge favourites Leicester. Seemingly heading for a point with three minutes of regular time to go, the Owls conceded a late winner to rather harshly leave the King Power empty-handed. It was a bittersweet afternoon for Nathaniel Chalobah, who scored his first goal in SWFC colours before withdrawing through injury. Jannik Vestergaard levelled and Wednesday had to see out the contest without Barry Bannan as the skipper picked up two quickfire yellow cards. And Wout Faes concluded matters, heading home a corner to keep the points in the Midlands. The Owls started well enough but the hosts were first to show when Luke Thomas forced Pierce Charles into a smart save at full stretch. Wednesday motored upfield and came within a whisker of taking the lead. Chalobah’s daisycutter was heading into the far corner until the merest of fingertips from Jakub Stolarczyk diverted the ball onto

the post. But luck was on Chalobah’s side as the visitors hit the front on 26 minutes. Yan Valery did ever so well down the right, riding the challenge of his marker, and pulled back invitingly for Chalobah to open his account with the aid of a hefty deflection. The goal was effectively his last contribution as the midfielder promptly limped out of the action but despite the Foxes finding more endeavour towards half time – Vestergaard somehow headed wide from close range – Wednesday held the advantage at the break. But it didn’t last as Leicester cranked up the pressure from the restart and were rewarded on 54 minutes. A quick freekick found Vestergaard in space and the Dane atoned for his earlier miss with a convincing finish from eight yards. The Owls were dealt a further blow when the impressive Valery gave way to injury and it was all hands to the pump. The task was greater still when Bannan saw an earlier yellow upgraded to red and eyes were fixed on the clock from the Wednesday end as the

Foxes launched waves of attacks. And after Charles spectacularly denied Patson Daka with a stunning save, Leicester scored from the resulting corner, with Faes glancing high into the roof of the net. Henrik Pedersen cut a proud figure following his managerial debut with the Owls. Wednesday had taken the lead through Nathaniel Chalobah and despite the Foxes’ comeback, the Dane felt his side’s performance should act as a blueprint for future games. Pedersen said: “I’m very, very proud of the performance from the boys. With all they have been through in the last weeks, to deliver such a great performance, I’m so proud of the boys. We played with big confidence in the beginning, we were really well prepared and the boys, in the difficult phases where we didn’t have the ball, kept up their tactical discipline. It’s frustrating, but the performance behind the result was amazing from the boys, and this is the basis for the future.”

Grant McCann lavished praise on Rovers’ substitutes for their impact on the win at Mansfield Town. McCann used his five substitute options within a seven minute spell midway through the second half. McCann said. “I know Bails will get the credit with the two goals but the impact of the lads that came off the bench and how strong we were. We looked in the ascendency. I could feel we were going to get a goal and when we got that, I could feel that we were going to get the winner. We tried to go and win the game. The changes we made - we brought every attacking player we had onto the pitch. The boys came off the bench and just added an extra bounce to us.

We’re going to need that this year. It’s not that the lads who started the game didn’t do really well but we need the bounce from the bench. We saw it so many times last season where we scored late goals. It’s never about what’s on the pitch at the start of the game. It’s what the whole dynamic of the day is, who’s going to come on and affect the game.”

Rotherham United made the long trek home empty-handed following a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Stevenage in Sky Bet League One. Jamie Reid’s first-half header proved the difference between the teams – who both tasted victory on the opening day – but it was Stevenage, who maintained their unblemished record with victory at the Lamex Stadium. The Millers – who were far from their best in Hertfordshire - made one change to their starting line-up. Zak Jules was suspended after his sending off against Port Vale for two bookable offences but Millers boss Matt Hamshaw was able to call upon the services of Sean Raggett for the first time under his stewardship following a long-standing knee complaint.
