ed sheeran makes surprise visit to sheffield

Global star Ed Sheeran surprised young, aspiring musicians at the iconic Red Tape Studios in Sheffield last Thursday (16/5).

The Shape of You star met with young people to speak about their experiences and their ambitions for their careers.

While visiting, Ed met with young people who work with TRACKS at Sheffield Music School and students from Hinde House and All Saints Schools, supported by Sheffield Music Hub. He heard some of their original work, learned more about their aspirations and how the music services in the city support their ambitions of breaking into the

industry. Tracks offers a music-based alternative provision for secondary age children in receipt of free school meals or for looked after children.

The students have access to a full suite of recording studios, providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills in song writing, production, rapping, singing and more.

Ed also took part in a special performance with a number of young musicians who were thrilled to get the opportunity to sing alongside the Grammy Award winner.

As well as meeting young people, he was able to speak with the dedicated staff at the Sheffield Music Hub and Tracks

as well as a number of music teachers from Sheffield schools. They spoke about the great work taking place in Sheffield despite significant challenges in music education due to a reduction in public service funding. The surprise appearance was organised by the Sheffield Music Hub team at Sheffield City Council.

Speaking about the visit, Ian Naylor, Head of Music Education Sheffield at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield has a rich musical heritage and is committed to developing homegrown talent and seeing our creative industries thrive. It’s been a pleasure to host Ed today and see first-

the city is unwavering, most notably the development of the £15m Harmony Works project.

Two police officers who disarmed and detained a man who had just killed both his parents have won a South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Award.

On Sunday 27 November 2022, a woman called South Yorkshire Police saying she was deeply concerned for her elderly parents’ safety. She reported attending their address in the Totley area of Sheffield and seeing her brother in a distressed state, telling her not to enter the property. PC Anna Kelsey and PC Nicola Burn attended the incident and were met by the very worried daughter. She told them that her brother was still inside the house with her parents. They reassured her and entered the house, where they found the suspect at the top of the stairs. He was wearing only his underwear, was covered in blood, and was holding a large knife.

PC Kelsey recalled: “I had recently been Taser trained, and I actually went in with my Taser unholstered, by my side. We came to the bottom of the stairs and the suspect was at the top of the stairs holding a dagger in his hand. It was long and jagged and he was pushing it into his stomach – his stomach and hands were covered in blood. We asked him if we could come up and have a chat with him, but he said, ‘No, don’t come any closer’. We asked him why he had the knife and he told us, ‘Because I’ve just killed both my parents’. All the time, I kept passing updates to the control room. The man said that if we went upstairs, he would kill us. They teach you in Taser training not to Taser someone at height, as there was a risk of him falling down the stairs onto us with a knife, so it was

pretty intense working out what to do.”

PC Burn added: “I was in pure shock. I thought, it’s real, it’s not just a training scenario. I’d never been in this situation before. But luckily the training kicked in and Anna and I realised it was definitely a Taser job. He could easily throw a weapon at us and our main priority was to get upstairs and check on his parents, to see if there was anything we could do to help them or him.”

PC Burn managed to take a step up the stairs, which caused the man to take a step back, and she fired her Taser, causing him to fall to the floor. The officers ran up the stairs and PC Burn recalls: “He still had the knife in his hand, and he started raising it again, so I didn’t know if he was going to throw it. When I saw the Taser had made a perfect connection, it was a moment of relief that I knew we had a couple of seconds to detain the male and have him secure so that he couldn’t be a threat to us or anyone else in the house.”

Back-up officers arrived on the scene and the man was taken to hospital. In July 2023, the man went to court and pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility. Psychiatrists agreed that he was suffering from a serious mental disorder and he was sent to a secure hospital. Both PC Burn and PC Kelsey were affected by the horrific scenes they had seen and the fear that they too could have been attacked. PC Kelsey said afterwards: “It was horrible; you don’t realise until you go to something like that how traumatic it is. If it had been a singlecrewed officer that wasn’t Taser trained, it could have been a whole different story.”

When they were told they’d been nominated for South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards, PC Kelsey said: “I’m really honoured. We’re under such scrutiny from the public, so to get recognition for doing something good is important. It’s nice to get this alongside Nicola as well, because we went through it together.”PC Burn said: “Unfortunately it’s not often you get really good praise. But I do feel proud. It’s nice also to get praise for treating the man like a human being who was going through a crisis and making sure he was okay, which a lot of officers would struggle to do after they’ve just seen what he’s done to someone. But that’s your job. You have to treat everyone the same, no matter what’s happened.”

South Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Steve Kent said: “Throughout this extremely distressing incident, Anna and Nicola were highly professional and remained calm under some of the toughest circumstances an officer could face. Both officers carried out their duties and followed their Taser training to the highest standard. Their communication skills and aftercare for the suspect were also astounding, despite being in extremely stressful and overwhelming circumstances. We are very proud of them – they are very deserving winners of an award.”

PC Burn and PC Kelsey will attend the South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards on Thursday 23 May. At the event a winner will be announced who will travel to London for the National Police Federation Bravery Awards in July.

lITTER vOlUNTEERs waNTEd!

Environmental charity

Keep Britain Tidy is looking for volunteers who are leading in the war on litter pollution in their communities to become part of its national #LitterHeroes Ambassador programme as the charity marks its 70th anniversary. There are currently 27 ambassadors located around South Yorkshire and the aim is to increase that number even further.

#LitterHeroes Ambassadors work across England’s regions supporting communities to carry out year-round litter-picking activities to tackle the more than two million pieces of rubbish that are dropped every day. They also encourage other pro-environmental activities, promoting and taking part in Keep Britain Tidy’s campaigns including the Great British Spring Clean and Buy Nothing New Month.

Keep Britain Tidy, which was originally established by the Women’s Institute in 1954, is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who already run existing litter-picking groups across South Yorkshire that organise at least four events a year.

The charity’s Chief Executive, Allison OgdenNewton OBE, said: “As we celebrate 70 years of Keep Britain Tidy, we want to say a huge thank you to all of our extraordinary volunteers who, over the years, have inspired us and helped shape our work. Our environment, our wildlife and our oceans are increasingly threatened by the seemingly endless stream of plastic pollution that finds its way on to our streets, parks and beaches so we need to find more inspirational volunteers who can join us in the fight to protect them. Litterpicking is a very easy and highly visible way of making a difference.”

New research from home assistance provider HomeServe has revealed the culprit behind persistent power outages plaguing households in South Yorkshire – the humble toaster.

According to HomeServe’s findings, a significant number of power disruptions in the region have been directly linked to faulty toasters. The statistics speak for themselves, with more than 142,000 instances of power outages attributed to these seemingly innocuous kitchen appliances and a number experiencing after effects like a smell of smoke (9%) and even an electrical fire (10%) when appliances blow their fuses. Of course, even without a fire or smell of smoke, a power outage is disruptive - leading to food spoilage, hindering work-from-home setups, and affecting daily routines. However, despite there being a seemingly simple fix for these electrical hiccups, 16% of respondents admitted uncertainty about how to check and reset a fuse with 6% not even knowing where their fuse box is located. And it’s not just those in South Yorkshire who are having issues with their fuses. Nearly two-fifths (39%) of adults in the UK have experienced a power outage in their homes at some stage, with breakfast favourites such as toasters (9%), and electric kettles (8%) being the most common culprits.

The NHS in South Yorkshire is urging people to choose wisely for their healthcare needs as health services are currently extremely busy.

Accident and emergency departments (also known as A&E) across the region are experiencing extremely high levels of patient need, well above the seasonal average.

People attending A&E with injuries or conditions that aren’t serious or life threatening may have to wait a very long time to be seen, so it’s important that you are prepared and know how to get help if needed during this time.

Over these busy periods, people are asked to think ahead and to choose the right service for their healthcare needs.

• Save time by seeking medical advice and booking appointments online via the NHS App or your GP practice website

• Use 111.nhs.uk if it’s not an emergency and you need health advice quickly. The expert team will be able to help you get the care you need.

• You should only call 999 for an ambulance in an emergency, when it is life-threatening or very serious – for example, signs of a heart attack or stroke, severe breathing difficulties, severe injuries or heavy bleeding.

• It is a good idea to have a small stock of basic

medicines at home for minor illness or injury. These may include paracetamol, plasters, indigestion remedy and anti-diarrhoeal medicine.

• Visit your local community pharmacy for medical advice and treatments for things like colds, tummy troubles, rashes, and pains, as well as common conditions like insect bites, urine infections, sore throats and ear ache.

Welcoming Jayne Dunn the new Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield

Cllr Jayne Dunn has been voted in as the new Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield and inaugurated at Sheffield City Council’s Annual General Meeting. Attendees in the chamber included Cllr Nabeela Mowlana, who said the new Lord Mayor, “Exemplified the qualities of a true leader” and was a person who “acts with integrity” and “unwaivering dedication”. Jayne is the city’s 127th Lord Mayor and welcomed her role by saying “I am truly honoured to have been elected as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield” in the chamber. “Since I was elected in 2012, I have seen this duty taken by 11 Lord Mayors, what each Lord Mayor has clearly tried to do is represent the people, their history, cultures, and communities. At every event, function, the Lord Mayor should make people feel special, and this is what I intend to do.”

Jayne was first elected to the Council in 2012 as member for the Broomhill ward and has represented the Southey ward since 2016. “When I became a councillor, it was about changing lives, what I have seen over the last 12 years is the Lord Mayor is a role that can reach out to everyone. Sheffield’s strength is its pride, people and Henderson’s Relish of course.” During her time as a councillor, Jayne has held a number of positions and gained a broad range of experience.

Over her career as a councillor, Jayne has taken on a number of important roles including as Cabinet Member for Housing and for Education and Skills. Jayne has also chaired the Licensing and Planning committees and is currently the chair of the South Yorkshire Pensions Authority. In each of these roles, Jayne has championed the voice and lived experience of those who are vulnerable, and has worked hard to improve their life chances and experiences of services. Jayne has also raised awareness of menopause and period equality issues, including working cross party helping to design the City’s first Period Equality Charter.

Lord Mayor of Sheffield Jayne Dunn said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield. This role is about boosting pride and representing what is great about our city - for me Sheffield’s strength is its people. Throughout my life in Sheffield, the good times and the bad, I have been lucky to live in a community that looks after each other. As Lord Mayor, I will make sure that the achievements of our residents and the dedication they show to the city is given a platform. Born and raised in Sheffield, Jayne attended King Ecgbert’s School in Dore and studied at Granville College.

Jayne was a single mum who raised her son on social security and lived in social housing after being evicted out of her home.

After retraining at college, Jayne went on to set up her own business, a beauty salon, and has been a selfemployed trader in Broomhill since 2000.

Jayne is experienced at raising money for local charities, including trekking the Sahara to raise funds for local youth homeless charity, Roundabout. During the pandemic lockdowns, Jayne painted to raise money for local causes. In her spare time, Jayne enjoys painting, running and yoga.

Safari adventure comes to Crystal Peaks for half term fun

The spectacle and adventure of life on safari comes to Crystal Peaks with a week of spring half term holiday activities.

Starting on Monday May 27 and going all the way through to Friday, May 31 the free family fun sessions will all have a wildlife safari theme. Held in the Crystal Peaks central atrium from 11am to 3pm, the first craft activity will feature a chance to make lizard models.

On Tuesday, participants will make snake mobiles, while on Wednesday it will be parrot puppets. Thursday’s session will feature animal masks and the week comes to an end on Friday with the noisiest activity, elephant blowers.

The LeadmiLL: CourT baTTLe begins over fuTure of sheffieLd venue

Lawyers representing The Leadmill have claimed its landlord’s intention to continue running the well-known Sheffield music venue in the same vein breaches human rights law reports Steve Jones at BBC News. The site was bought in 2017 by Electric Group, which in 2022 served an eviction notice on tenants The Leadmill Ltd.

A hearing to determine The Leadmill’s future began in Leeds on Monday.

Electric Group’s legal team said they would give the venue a new name and were not in breach of the law.

There would also be no reference to the venue’s original existence as a flour mill in its new name, Electric Group boss Dominic Madden told the BBC.

Tom Hickman KC, representing The Leadmill Ltd, said it would

be a violation of Article 1 of the Human Rights Act - protecting a person’s right to property - if Electric Group was to be allowed to “exploit” the “good will” built up by the current management by running the venue in “precisely the same way”.

Representing Mr Madden, Wayne Clark rejected the claim that continuing to run The Leadmill as a music venue and nightclub was a breach of human rights law, telling the hearing: “With respect to my learned friend, he’s reading far too much into it.”

Nicholas Trompeter KC, who also represented The Leadmill Ltd at Monday’s hearing, said the terms of the current operator’s lease agreement stated that it could remove any “improvements”fixtures and fittings - made to the venue. Alternatively, it would be entitled

to compensation if they were left behind.

The amount of fixtures and fittings that could be removed was “very extensive”, he added.

They included the main dancefloor, a toilet block and an air ventilation system that could result in a new roof being required if removed.

“In the event that those fixtures and fittings are removed it’s probably not an exaggeration to say that the premises would be left as a brittle shell, a bit like the old flour mill it once was,” Mr Trompeter added.

A report, commissioned by The Leadmill Ltd’s legal team, estimated the subsequent cost of getting the venue back up and running would be about £4.7m - a cost Mr Madden had not evidenced he could afford, Mr Trompeter said.

Representing Mr Madden, Mr Clark said his client had access to a £2m loan to pay for improvements “plus more if they needed it”.

On the potential stripping of the venue, he added: “I have never encountered, ever, a wall and a roof being part of a tenant’s fixtures”.

In response to a claim from Mr Trompeter that Electric Group would be unable to fulfil a legal obligation to open and run the venue in a timely manner because of the “improvements” needed, Mr Clark said: “We are ready to go in and run our own business.”

At the start of the hearing The Leadmill Ltd’s legal team applied for an adjournment on the basis of needing more time to respond to evidence submitted by Mr Madden’s legal team, and a new legal team for the venue putting forward fresh arguments.

New vision for creativity in Sheffield to be influenced by local people

Sheffield residents are being asked to have their say on what art and culture should look like for the city in the future.

Local people, from all of Sheffield’s communities, are to be asked to make their contribution to a new Culture Strategy for the city, and what the focus of the strategy should be.

They’ll be asked how culture should be celebrated for the benefit of local people and visitors alike, as well as what changes, skills and knowledge are needed to ensure the arts sector, and people apart of it, can flourish.

The city-wide consultation forms part of the Sheffield Culture Strategy 2024, which is being developed to address some of the long-standing obstacles faced by creatives living and working in the city.

The overarching ambition of the strategy is to develop Sheffield’s cultural offer and ensure the city is creative, prosperous, diverse and full of opportunity for its residents. It is being championed by the Culture Collective and Culture Consortium, and funded by Sheffield City Council, the University of Sheffield and Arts Council England.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economy, Skills and Development Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

“We want to ensure that everyone who lives, works and visits

Sheffield can benefit from all of the wonderful arts and culture we have here.

“We want our culture sector to thrive. This includes celebrating Sheffield and promoting all we have to offer to the rest of the country, and beyond. It also means ensuring this is a city full of opportunity for inspiring musicians, makers and other creatives.

“To do this, we need to hear from Sheffield people, and find out what they want to see from this strategy, from the Council and from all of the partners and organisations involved in creating this new vision.”

Joe Kriss Director of Sheffieldbased social enterprise, Opus Independents, who are part of the strategy team, added:

“Sheffield has a really exciting cultural offer but there is much more we can do together if we create the right opportunities for

new collaborations and growth. We hope this work will lay the foundations for a new path forward for the city's creative communities.” Sheffield’s creative sector have already had their say on the new vision. In the first phase of its development a short survey was launched aimed at local makers, musicians, artists, and designers.

A baseline audit of the city’s cultural sector has also taken place, which highlighted areas of growth and opportunity for the city as well as challenges to overcome. The audit, along with the outcomes of both consultations with public and Individuals working in the sector, will be used to inform the new strategy, which will be launched later this year.

Doncaster Rovers snap up sought-after midfielder Sbarra

Doncaster Rovers are delighted to confirm the arrival of midfielder Joe Sbarra as the first new signing of the summer.

The 25-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the option of a further year and arrives at the EcoPower Stadium fresh from featuring in both this season’s National League play-off and FA Trophy finals at Wembley.

Energetic playmaker Sbarra was in high demand following his departure from Solihull Moors, where he grew his reputation during a four-year spell. And he says the plans laid out to him by manager Grant McCann ensured he knew Rovers were the right club for him.

“It’s a quick turnaround and I’m just delighted to get it over the line,” he said.

“From the first conversation with the gaffer,

for the club, whilst Ahmedhodžić and Osborn were recalled, with Larouci, Souza and Brooks dropping to the bench. McBurnie and Jebbison also featured amongst the substitutes, the latter for the first time this term.

United started positively with Brereton Diaz firing over after Osborn had capitilised on a mistake by Drăgușin, but unfortunately picked up an injury in

everything he had to say appealed to me loads. The way he plays suits me and the way he sees me fitting in. How welcoming him and his staff have been has been great as well so I’m really pleased.”

West Midlands-born Sbarra scored 36 goals in 149 appearances for Solihull, including in both the semi-final and final of the National League playoffs as Moors missed out on promotion to the EFL on penalties.

Sbarra rose to prominence in the 2021/22 campaign when he netted 18 goals in 48 appearances as Solihull again reached the play-off final only to be beaten in extra time by Grimsby Town.

He came through the ranks at Burton Albion and made 70 appearances, including 18 in the Championship, prior to his permanent switch to Solihull in 2020.

Rovers manager McCann said: “I’m really pleased with this one. He’s had quite a bit of interest in him after the three or four seasons he’s had at Solihull where he’s been excellent.

“He’s been among the goals and played a lot of goals. We’ve been chasing him for a bit, keeping an eye on him and watching his games and we’re really pleased to get it done.”

Grant McCann says Joe Sbarra will bring a new dimension to the Rovers midfield after joining the club on a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old has become McCann’s first signing of the summer and the Rovers boss expects him to add attacking threat from midfield.

“He just brings something different that we haven’t got in the changing room,” McCann said. “The players we have in the midfield areas are different to Joe.

“He wants to play on the half turn. He’s very positive and runs at people, more like a ten but can drift into wide areas. He’ll bring a lot of different dimensions to our midfield.

“He’ll get among the goals, he’ll create lots and he’s an infectious character.”

Foderingham produced the first of several telling contributions. In the 29th minute though, United had a triple let off, Bentancur hit the post, Son was excellent denied in the next phase of play, before Romero cushioned a volley wide when unmarked.
