Police response to increase in firearms discharges In 2020, the SYP Armed Crime Team launched in Sheffield and at the end of 2022, it was extended out to cover the whole force area. ACT was formed to deliver a strong and coordinated response to the threat of gun crime and had been successful in reducing the number of discharges reported.

Over recent weeks, the numbers of firearms discharges being reported have increased, and SYP is taking a coordinated approach to find those responsible and bring them to justice, and

disrupt the activities of organised crime groups.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Hartley said: “Recently you may have seen more information on our channels about firearms discharges and how SYP is tackling them within each district of South Yorkshire. This is purposeful.

“We are not looking to raise fear of crime within our communities, what we want to do is ensure you know what is actually happening in your area and to encourage you to work with us to tackle it.

“We are clearly seeing far

too much of this type of criminality and it will not, and cannot be tolerated.

While we will react swiftly to safeguard people at risk, and investigate these incidents, often what we lack to bring the offenders to justice is information – and we believe the community may hold it.

“There is no doubt we will tackle this issue, and with every discharge we see, we will seek to flood the area with specialist officers, combing every inch of the crime scenes and working relentlessly to find those responsible.

“What we don’t want to

see is innocent people being hurt, and we need to get to those involved before further discharges happen. If you know something, have any information no matter how trivial you think it may be, please get in touch. If you don’t feel comfortable talking directly to the police, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously – we will get that information and be able to act on it.

“We are committed to tackling this and with your help, we will make sure that those involved

in armed criminality spend many years in custody to reflect on their mistakes.”

The Rotherham Healthy Holidays programme for children and young people is back during the school summer holidays and it’s bigger and better than ever!

Local parents are being encouraged to book places for their children at the earliest opportunity.

Rotherham Council has once again partnered with a range of providers across the borough to deliver a huge range of holiday activity programmes, which start from 24 July.

Free places are available to many children, including the 11,000 from the borough who receive benefitsrelated free school meals. Many providers also offer good value paid places as well.

In total there are 59 different activity sessions planned right across the borough this summer, which is the most since Rotherham Healthy Holidays first began in Easter 2021.

Every Rotherham Healthy Holidays session includes a meal.

Activities include arts and crafts, computer game design, martial arts, football, parkour, BMX, boxing, plus

much more. This summer, for the first time, Rotherham Healthy Holidays has teamed up with South Yorkshire-based Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice star Jessica Steele, who is offering singing, acting, and dancing activities at Monkwood Primary School in Rawmarsh from 21-24 August for children aged 5 to 11 years.

Parents must collect a unique reference number from their child's school to access their free place.

Any activities taking place in a school, are open to all children, not just their own pupils.

Councillor Victoria Cusworth, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Rotherham Council, said: “Our Rotherham Healthy Holidays programme

continues to be very popular so it’s great to see more activities, thanks to the wide variety of excellent providers across our borough. I’d encourage parents to book their child’s place as soon as possible.

“The summer break can be a tough time for many families, particularly those on low incomes. Last year, across the Easter, Summer and Winter school holidays, the Rotherham Healthy Holidays scheme served up more than 23,000 meals to local children - I’m so pleased that we can continue to make this offer to keep children entertained and fed, which we know is appreciated by parents.”

Leopold Square announces The Fringe at Tramlines WEEKEND LINE UP FOR 2023

Leopold Square is once again delighted to be recognised as an official The Fringe at Tramlines stage and, as well as bringing some of the best jazz, swing, folk and blues acts from the local music scene to the city centre venue, it is handing over Friday night to Kuckoo Rocks for an unsigned showcase.

On Friday 21st July, Leopold Square is giving a platform to local unsigned indie and rock talent when a variety of bands and artists will be performing on the outdoor stage between 5pm and 11pm.

The live music kicks off on Saturday 22nd July at 1pm when Nicola Farnon & the Made Ups take to the stage. Live performances

from Jeremy Sassoon, Papa Soul, and Ash Grey and the Burners will continue until 7pm.

Sheffield-based DJ Algie will keep the Leopold Square party going until 11pm.

Kat Eaton will be opening the live music on Sunday 23rd July at 1pm. Having already toured the UK and Europe supporting various artists, including Jools Holland, Paul Carrack and The Teskey Brothers, Kat has steadily been making a name for herself in the UK and overseas.

Dizzy Cub, KONL & Ko, and Ryan Taylor will be continuing the live music throughout Sunday until 8.30pm, before DJ Tink brings Leopold Square’s The Fringe at Tramlines

prince makes commitment to homelessness neighbourhood policing Sheffield welcomed Prince William last Tuesday (27th) as he launched his UK wide homelessness programme Homewards, with Sheffield right at its heart.

Sheffield has been chosen as one of only six places across the UK to benefit from the Homewards programme – which involves an integrated team here in Sheffield and funding to help Sheffield City Council and its partners in social housing, charities and public services go that big step further in supporting those who don’t have a stable home. Homewards is a five-year locally led programme launched by Prince William and The Royal Foundation which will demonstrate that together it is possible to end hoamelessness, making it rare, brief, and unrepeated. HRH the Prince of Wales visited Reach up Youth, in Burngreave to announce Sheffield as one of The Royal Foundation’s partners and to meet those who will be implementing the Homewards programme.

Young people from Reach Up Youth also met the Prince and had the opportunity to share their stories and discuss the work the organisation is doing to support young people and their families in the area. Homewards will take a transformative approach to the issue of homelessness and put collaboration at its heart, giving its six flagship locations, including Sheffield, new space, tools, and relationships to showcase what can be achieved through a collective effort focused on preventing homelessness in their

areas.

Prince William said: “In a modern and progressive society, everyone should have a safe and secure home, be treated with dignity and given the support they need. Through Homewards, I want to make this a reality and over the next five years, give people across the UK hope that homelessness can be prevented when we collaborate. I am fortunate to have seen first-hand the tireless work of people and organisations across the sector, the tangible impact their efforts can have and what can be done when communities are able to focus on preventing homelessness, rather than managing it. It’s a big task, but I firmly believe that by working together it is possible to make homelessness rare, brief, and unrepeated and I am very much looking forward to working with our six locations to make our ambition a reality.”

Chief Executive for Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs said: “We are really proud that Sheffield has been selected to be part of Homewards, no one should find themselves in crisis, without a roof over their heads and this is an incredible opportunity to prevent people and families from becoming homeless. This programme , created by the Prince William, will enable us to focus efforts, with much-needed financial backing, on getting people the help and support they need before they lose their homes.”

those who are living in temporary accommodation such as hostels or shelters. It will also address the fact that in Sheffield there is a disproportionate number of people of Black and minoritised ethnic backgrounds who are becoming homeless, so early work will focus efforts on diverse communities in Sheffield and areas with high levels of deprivation. Teams in Sheffield, from a range of partners, will further strengthen their links and the ability to direct people to services that they might need, building on existing work across the city. The programme will aim to reach families before they are at risk losing their home. Plans for how the five-year long programme will work will be developed over the coming months by those on the front-line here in Sheffield, and experts from across the world who will be supporting the Homewards programme.

Suzanne Allen, Head of City-Wide Housing for Sheffield City Council said: “Your home is your safe place, it is your comfort and security. Your home should be the one place you can be yourself and it offers dignity, and opportunity. This is not only about those living on the streets – we have a large number of people and families who are living in unstable accommodation. People not knowing if they will have a roof over their heads next week, next month, even tonight in some cases. We have parents not knowing where their children will sleep tonight, and people facing a choice between a hot meal and a roof over their heads. The cost-ofliving crisis and pressures across the board mean that the average person is only two and a half months away from losing their home, should they lose their jobs and stress factors are against them.

It could be you; it could be any one of us – but

the reality is that some people are more at risk of homelessness than others. The Homewards programme gives me confidence that we will be able to help more people before they have to go through the trauma of losing their home. We can help them put things into place and understand their needs to help them stay secure.” Leader of Sheffield City Council Tom Hunt said: “This is a big opportunity to help put an end to homelessness in Sheffield. Being homeless is the worst start in life for young people which is why the project will work with families who are at risk of being made homeless. Everyone should have a safe, secure, affordable home and that is what we are focused on providing. We are very pleased to be chosen to partner with Prince William and The Royal Foundation. They will bring in new expertise and investment to Sheffield to help prevent people and families from becoming homeless.” Chair of Sheffield City Council’s Housing Committee Douglas Johnson said: “Homelessness and the threat of homelessness devastates families. I have seen families in crisis and I have also seen families avoid homelessness with the right support at the right time. Sheffield’s Housing Committee recognises both the impact of homelessness and the pressure on existing services so this new initiative is very welcome.In March 2023, the Housing Committee approved an action plan to prevent homelessness so I am pleased this has won the royal seal of approval. I very much look forward to how this programme will develop over the next five years.”

Police Constable Trudi Seager tells us how she has been proactively tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) and drug-related criminality in Burngreave, including engaging with young people in the community and recently seizing £17k worth of Class A drugs following multiple complaints of ASB at a residential property.

Trudi joined South Yorkshire Police in 2021 via Police Now’s National Graduate Leadership Programme. She tells us more about her work during Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week (3rd – 9th July), which aims to raise awareness of the impact of ASB and the work individuals are doing to address the issues in their communities. Officers on Police Now’s National Graduate Leadership Programme work as neighbourhood police officers in communities across England and Wales to tackle deep-rooted problems and reduce ASB from the very start of their policing careers. Trudi tells us more about her work below: What do you do to tackle ASB in your neighbourhood policing role?

“As an officer on Burngreave Team, I work every day to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for residents in my community. Tackling ASB is a daily priority for the team. I have recently delivered several talks at a local school and a local Mosque about the impact of ASB on communities, with the aim of building positive relationships with young people in the community

and educating them about the consequences of criminal activity. Not all ASB is linked to more serious crime, but it can become a gateway, so we ensure that young people don’t get drawn into a cycle of crime.

Proactive engagement like this also helps increase our presence in the community, which is vital for building public confidence and reducing crime in the long-term.

Before joining the police service, I studied Spanish at the University of Sheffield. When I graduated, I looked for a job which would allow me to improve others’ lives and bring improvements to society. Being a Police Now officer and embedding myself in a community has been a fantastic way of doing this.

Can you give an example of how you have reduced crime and ASB in your community?

“One case immediately comes to mind involving a flat in our neighbourhood of Burngreave that had become a persistent source of ASB, drug dealing and drug abuse.

The neighbourhood policing team and I established that we had grounds to conduct a search of the property, and subsequently arrested an individual in possession of over £17k worth of cocaine, who was immediately remanded in custody.

Thanks to the casefile we collated against the offender he pleaded guilty to possession of Class A drugs and intent to supply and was sentenced to 3 years in prison earlier this year.

Charity Cycling UK has launched Big Bike Revival 2023 to support new and returning cyclists across England through a programme of free events delivered locally by community groups.

Anyone interested can bring their bike along to the sessions. These include Dr Bike events providing a free basic service; maintenance workshops teaching essential repair skills, learn to ride sessions for beginners and led rides supporting people to feel more confident cycling.

In South Yorkshire, the following delivery partners are taking part in the Big Bike Revival: Bike Rehab (Sheffield), Rotherham United Community Sports Trust (Rotherham), Shiloh Rotherham (Rotherham) Cycling UK hopes that the Big Bike Revival can offer a lifeline to those concerned about the cost-of-living crisis.

With energy, food and travel costs remaining high, the programme offers practical help and support to people who are considering a switch to cycling, as a more affordable and sustainable means of transport. It’s now in its ninth year and

has so far reached over 700,000 people. The most recent report shows that over a third of those taking part reported that they had started cycling 50% of the journeys they previously drove. Cycling UK’s Andy Cremin said: “I’m delighted that Big Bike Revival has launched for 2023, to help people drive less and cycle more.

In a cost-of-living crisis, it’s more important than ever to encourage and support people to make the most cost-effective choices for travelling shorter distances. Through this project we’re helping people to ride who don’t fit the usual cycling stereotype of athletes on racing bikes in lycra, which is really important.

The Big Bike Revival is about helping everyone to cycle for their everyday journeys. You don’t need to have special equipment or clothing to be able to ride a bicycle.”

National Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman said: “Active travel is convenient, cheap, healthy and good for the environment.

That’s why we want to ensure it is an option available to everyone.

By offering cycle repairs and delivering helpful training sessions across the country, Big Bike Revival will give many more people the tools and confidence they need to get around under their own steam.”

Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Evening hits £250,000 fundraising landmark in sixth year Weston Park Cancer Charity has confirmed its latest annual Race Evening – which every year turns Doncaster Racecourse the charity’s trademark purple – has seen the total raised across the event’s six years hit the £250,000 landmark.

This year’s evening, sponsored by Ant Marketing, was held on June 2nd and saw thousands of spectators support the charity by raising a record £52,500 to fund life-altering cancer support, enhanced treatment experiences and vital research – ensuring the one in two people living with cancer receive the best possible care.

Hundreds of free tickets were also generously provided by Doncaster Racecourse for patients at Weston Park Cancer Centre, and their families. Staff from Weston Park Hospital were also able to attend for free.

The £250,000 raised in the event’s lifetime is enough to fund the work of six research nurses for one year, or run four of the charity’s free transport service minibuses twice a day, five days a week for a total 84 weeks.

Generous contributions by racegoers on the day added to the impressive fundraising total. Ticket packages including dinner and drinks were followed by live and silent auctions, while outside Weston Park Cancer Charity staff and volunteers busily held raffles, tombolas and collected donations as people enjoyed the summer sun.

Well-known broadcaster Bobby Beevers kindly joined the charity as race evening announcer from the parade ring. Races were sponsored by Ant Marketing, Alan Wood Plumbing and Heating, Blueline Taxis, Napoleons Casinos, Hallam FM and Westfield Health.

Weston Park Cancer Charity also asked guests to wear their best purple outfits for a well-received ‘best dressed’ competition.

Darren Hayes, head of fundraising at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We’re delighted with the success of the Ant Marketing Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Evening, which has gone from strength to strength since we began

our partnership with Doncaster Racecourse six years ago.

“When we realised we were able to reach the £250,000 mark, we set that as our target for this year – knowing we had to aim for our biggest-ever Race Evening to get there. We knew it was ambitious, but we also know how generous the people who support our charity can be.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to all our supporters, patrons and trustees, to Doncaster Racecourse, to the companies who sponsored each race, and to everyone who came to enjoy a great evening of racing while raising vital funds to support those living with cancer in our region.

“It’s testament to how crucial the work of Weston Park Cancer Charity is that people still want to give so generously to our cause, especially in the current climate.”

Sheffield set for weekend of music and good times for The Fringe at Tramlines After a successful post-pandemic comeback in 2022, The Fringe at Tramlines makes its anticipated return to Sheffield from July 21st to 23rd. Supported by Sheffield BID and Sheffield City Council, this exciting event promises a jam-packed schedule of activities. Prepare for a weekend filled with music and entertainment as the city centre becomes a vibrant hub of celebration.

From the lively outdoor main stage at Devonshire Green to the numerous city venues, bars, pubs, and clubs, a diverse range of live music and DJs will create an extraordinary festive ambience that extends beyond the city centre. Get ready to join the biggest party of the year as Sheffield comes alive with The Fringe at Tramlines.

At Devonshire Green, the main stage of The Fringe at Tramlines will captivate attendees with its range of music and an enticing selection of food and beverages. Under the expert curation of local music promoter, Papa Al, this stage strives to showcase a rich tapestry of musical genres that beautifully reflects Sheffield’s diverse cultural landscape.

Saturday headliners Jungle Lion are an energetic ska ensemble featuring 10

talented musicians with a long history of performances during the Tramlines weekend. Jungle Lion will be joined on Sat by reggae, funk, soul, ska and more from supporting acts, Solar Love Society and The Free Radicals.

Speed for Lovers will perform their live electronic music inspired by Sheffield’s vibrant club scene whilst gifted reggae performer, Ripton Lindsey and soul/ Motown band, Soul Battalion are also appearing on Saturday as are Romano Jilo (Roma dancers) and Blue Street Brass.

The highly acclaimed Beatles Dub Club from Chris Arnold will also feature on Saturday and has been a huge hit on the festival circuit with support from by Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim). Chris remixes and re-edits Beatles classics.

Completing the Saturday line-up are Los Vastardos, a new mystery band from Alex del Mango and the Shine Performance Choir with Sista Soul, a vibrant and funky choir including gospel soloists.

Sunday at Devonshire Green is headlined by the magnificent Sheffield Beatles Project, a super group of local musicians playing music from The Beatles. Also performing are Highway Child (soul, funk and blues),

Shanghai Treason (folk-tinged punk rock), Tracks Presents (a big group of young performers from Sheffield Music School) and Rogue Siesta with their funky reggae grooves.

With so much musical entertainment being hosted across the city, Sheffield City Council have partnered with app developers Woov to create a brand new mobile app that will include a comprehensive guide to everything that’s taking place over the weekend.

Funding Approved for Renovations and Repairs to Parish Suite in Killamarsh

Residents in Killamarsh and the surrounding areas are set to get an improved and refurbished community space in the Parish Suite thanks to the £99,410.00 grant from FCC Communities Foundation.

The money will be used to refurbish the Parish Suite following its separation from Killamarsh Active. With planned works including updating of toilet facilities, creating a community kitchen, installing a new dance floor as well as redecoration and lighting.

The whole of the Parish Council including Councillors and Officers

believe these improvements will benefit the community hugely and will provide a modern inviting space to bring the community together. The Chair of the Parish Council Stephen Clough says “This project will provide a real boost for the people of Killamarsh. It’s fantastic that FCC Communities Foundation has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to getting this project progressing over the coming months”.

through the Landfill Communities Fund.

NEW VILLAGE FESTIVAL SET FOR KILLAMARSH

Saturday 15th July is the day of the Killamarsh Village Festival, The first of what will hopefully be an annual event for the village.

With a mixture of stalls, selling things from hand crafted chocolate to handmade gothic jewellery, to cards and decorations plus there will be craft stalls from local sellers including Killamarsh local businesses Kraft House, Magical Sweets and Dani’s Desserts amongst many others.

The festival will also feature stalls from local groups such as the Women’s Institute and Church on the Street plus there will be a selection of caterers in attendance, from ‘The Giant Frying Pan’ selling delicious Lincolnshire sausage, Orchard 27 serving up Mexican fusion street food as well as an Ice Cream van, Burgers and Donuts.

After all that shopping and food you will no doubt need a drink to cool off with Jono and John from J2 Bars providing lager, hand pulled cask ale, wine, prosecco, and a selection of Gins and mixers.

In addition, Extreme Wheels will be in attendance offering free activities for

children from aged 9 and above with Body Zorbing, Laser Tag, as well as demonstrations and come and have a go on the Skatepark, there is bound to be something to keep tweens and teens entertained.

For the younger guests they have children’s rides on the car park outside the leisure centre, as well as the Killamarsh Scouts Activity bus, with air rifle shooting and a cave maze.

Childrens entertainer Curly Wurley will be on hand to entertain the children, with circus workshops and balloon modelling plus a very special

guest appearance from a certain mouse courtesy of Gulliver’s Valley Resort as well as prizes and give aways!

Why not set aside some time to go down and get involved, the festival will be on between 11am and 4pm with the main stage situated on the field behind Killamarsh Active. There will be lots to do for the whole family to come and support Killamarsh and local businesses for a day filled with fun!

James spent last season on loan with Wednesday and was a key member of the squad as they gained promotion back to the Championship.

The versatile Manchester United product scored a vital goal against

Peterborough in the play-off semi-final second leg at Hillsborough as the Owls overturned a 4-0 deficit to reach Wembley.

After spending his youth career at Old Trafford, James enjoyed loan spells with Carlisle, Rotherham and Huddersfield before completing a permanent move to Wigan in 2015.

He spent three seasons with the Latics before switching to Sunderland

and then Doncaster one year later.

James played over 70 games in South Yorkshire and sealed a Championship move to Blackpool in June 2021, making a loan switch to S6 one season later.

The 29-year-old featured 34 times for Wednesday last campaign and now becomes the Owls first addition of the summer transfer window.
