PLANNING FOR THE Future of former Cole Brothers STORE This week Sheffield City Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee will meet to decide the future use of the former Cole Brothers building in Barker’s Pool.

The Committee will discuss a report which outlines the six proposals considered and decide whether to proceed to the next stage of detailed negotiations with the preferred bidder recommended by Council officers.

The preferred bidder proposes to transform the building into a mixed-use space – comprising of cafes, retail, leisure, event space and workspace – with substantial areas of

the building reopening for the public. The scheme and uses would complement the existing and proposed development within the rest of the Heart of the City project. The plans would see Barker’s Pool and Cambridge Street entrances opened up to allow for outdoor dining areas. The rest of the ground floor would be filled with retail units, with particular interest in independent businesses, the lower ground floors would be used for leisure purposes. The upper floors would be workspace together with some rooftop offices.

It is proposed the existing

car park structure would be maintained but with far fewer parking spaces for use by the tenants of the building. The structure would have public access to a pocket park at the top, as well as studio spaces and a gym on the upper levels.

Refurbishment of the building will be a ‘light touch, maximum impact’ approach with limited changes such as retaining and exposing existing features and cleaning the façade rather than replacing panels, whilst improving thermal performance.

Natural light and ventilation will be

maximised by creating a large atrium through the building. This has many environmental benefits in terms of reducing potential energy and water use and retaining embodied carbon within the structure.

The other submissions were for a mixture of uses including a hotel, offices and residential.

The interest that the marketing generated and the quality and amount of work that was submitted by all of the bidders was hugely impressive and encouraging for other projects which the Council will be bringing forward in the near future.

new detectives start massive investment in leisure taking your dog swimming

Twenty new trainee detective constables have landed in South Yorkshire Police, having just completed Police Now’s National Detective Programme academy.

The 13-week residential academy began in March when almost 230 new officers – who all join their respective forces across England and Wales today – began their intensive training together. They have developed the core policing skills and knowledge required for complex investigative work, in a mix of practical and classroombased sessions led by experienced sergeants seconded from Police Now’s partner forces.

They have also completed field training shifts in their force Response teams and Criminal Investigation Departments. Police Now officers also sit the challenging National Investigators’ Exam at the academy and consistently achieve a higher-than-average first-time pass rate. At this year’s detective academy, there was an average first-time pass rate of 75% compared to the national average of 59%.

They now continue Police Now’s two-year training and development programme in force, where they will play an integral part in solving cases and supporting victims of crime across South Yorkshire. Assistant Chief Constable Sharn Basra delivered a keynote address to the new officers at the academy closing ceremony (15th – 16th June), in his last ever policing appearance before officially retiring that week. He said: “I look over the room, as I come to the end of my career, and I see the future of policing. You will change policing and you will improve policing for the

better. I have no doubt that during your academy training you have worked hard, you have been professional and you have had fun. Continue to do this throughout the next stages of your training and the rest of your policing careers.

Policing is tough, you will have some bad days, you will see things that other people won’t see and you will experience things that other people shouldn’t have to experience. But you will change people’s lives and you will save people’s lives. The good days will always overtake the bad, as you support those that need you the most and secure justice for victims.”

Trainee Detective Constable Laura Gregory, who joins South Yorkshire Police today via the programme, said: “The Police Now academy has been an amazing experience. It has challenged and tested us in ways we would not have anticipated but the skills, knowledge and confidence we have developed will be invaluable when we go into our new roles in the next stages of the programme. I am very excited to get out in force to put into practice what I have learnt so far and contribute to serving the communities in South Yorkshire. It is a challenging time to become involved in policing but we are all enthusiastic about making a positive impact in the force.”

Sheffield’s leisure and entertainment venues are set for £117 million of investment and huge improvements as part of ambitious plans for the city. Plans include rebuilds of some of the city’s most popular leisure centres and improvements to Sheffield Arena and City Hall.

A significant part of our success lies in working closely with our partners such as the NHS, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Working together to deliver the city’s Move More strategy enables us to ensure Sheffield residents have the facilities they need to live happy, healthier lives.”

Across the city there are a portfolio of leisure and entertainment facilities, some of these venues are owned by community organisations and others, including Graves and Thorncliffe, are run by Places Leisure. The longest standing arrangements (which come to an end in 2024) are those with Sheffield City Trust (SCT), an independent charity which runs the City’s sport, leisure and entertainment facilities, including Ponds Forge, Hillsborough and the Arena. The procurement for future leisure and entertainment providers will be structured into three packages. Each bidder will have the opportunity to tender for the packages that best suit their expertise: • Services for Sport and Leisure (including golf facilities) • Entertainment facilities – City Hall • Entertainment facility – the Arena Complementing the SCT facilities, the contract with Places Leisure to operate Graves, Thorncliffe and Wisewood leisure centres is due for review in 2026.

These facilities will be included in the Services for Sport and Leisure package to ensure best value and best outcomes for customers.

As we approach the summer months, many of us may consider taking our dogs with us to the beach or letting them cool off in lakes and ponds.

Swimming can be great exercise for dogs, but there are a few water safety tips every pet owner should be aware of.

“Before you think about heading out, make sure to check how hot it’s going to be. Even with the opportunity to swim, days out in the sun could put your dog at risk of heatstroke, so consider whether it might be safer to leave them at home.

Remember that if it is too hot, even getting your dog to the water might be a problem as hot sand or tarmac can burn their paws. Once you and your dog are by the water, there are many things to keep in mind to help keep them safe,” says PDSA Vet Nurse Shauna Walsh.

Make sure they can swim First, it’s essential to remember that not every dog is a natural swimmer.

Choosing the right spot Picking the right swimming spot is a big step in ensuring your pet’s safety. If swimming in nature, make sure your pet is up to date with their vaccinations, and carefully select the location. Lakes are often calm and have plenty of shallow spots for your dog to rest. Make sure to scan the area for any hazards, such as fallen branches, boats, windsurfers, or fishermen as they could potentially present a danger to your dog. Also be on the lookout for blue-green algae – this grows in stagnant water and is toxic to dogs even in small amounts. Dog friendly beaches can also make perfect spots for a dip – but remember to check the tide times, look out for warning flags, and make sure the waves are small. It is important you never let your dog enter the canals as the water is often stagnant, which can be a health hazard as they may catch an infection and there’s increased chance of blue-green algae growth. There are

also often dangers under the water and not many places for your pooch to climb out. Fast flowing rivers or flood waters are also unsuitable as the currents can quickly cause your dog to struggle and get into trouble.

What to do in an emergency Never leave your dog unattended around water, even if they are a strong swimmer. If your or someone else’s dog gets in trouble in the water, it’s best to avoid going in after them as this can put you in danger as well. If you can, remain on the shore, calling your dog to give them a target to swim towards. If there is an inflatable ring available, you can throw this into the water to help keep your dog afloat. On a beach, lifeguards may be able to assist helping your dog to shore, otherwise ring 999 and ask for the coastguard to get help from professionals.

If a pet becomes unresponsive after swimming or has drowned, it is important to know how to perform CPR to give them the best chance. While you begin CPR, have a second person ring your vet who will be able to offer support.

Ambitious investment plans for Sheffield’s entertainment facilities Sheffield’s leisure and entertainment venues are set for £117 million of investment and huge improvements as part of ambitious plans for the city.

Plans include rebuilds of some of the city’s most popular leisure centres and improvements to Sheffield Arena and City Hall.

Following extensive consultation and research, a competitive procurement process will be launched later this month to attract the very best in leisure

provision to run Sheffield’s venues.

Local communities will be at the heart of our plans, to help us achieve our mission of creating a more active Sheffield. The aim is to create an exciting leisure offer and work closely with partners such as the NHS to deliver on health and wellbeing improvements.

The investment, which is estimated at £117million, will see significant improvements to the city’s leisure and

entertainment facilities. This includes a complete rebuild of Springs, Concord and Hillsborough Leisure Centres. In addition to this, a new partnership with the Football Foundation worth £2million will see investment in the Woodbourn Road football hub.

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks, and Leisure policy committee, added: “To look after ourselves, we need facilities and open spaces that are fit for purpose, places that people want to visit and enjoy.

“Health and wellbeing matter now more than ever. A walk in the park, a swim at your local pool, or a 30-minute class in the gym does wonders for minds and bodies and it’s important that local people have the choices to do it their way.

“Sheffield is one of only three cities in the UK to host a National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. A significant part of our success lies in working closely with our partners such as the NHS, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Working together to deliver the city’s Move

More strategy enables us to ensure Sheffield residents have the facilities they need to live happy, healthier lives.”

Councillor Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is renowned for sport, leisure and entertainment with our venues hosting many elite events and high-profile shows. We’re proud of this but we know that many of our facilities need significant investment. Our plans will ensure there are modern, accessible leisure facilities across the city and they will ensure Sheffield has the venues to compete on the national and international stage.

‘Listening to our residents, we know that many people can find it hard to be active and incorporate healthy habits into daily life. That’s why we’re working with our partners to deliver excellent, low-cost facilities across the city. We want to ensure people across Sheffield can access facilities that support wellbeing, physical and mental health, that are aspirational for children and young people and are places to socialise and have fun.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, but we’ve developed a long-term

vision that will protect and enhance our much-loved venues. Across the country we’ve seen pool and leisure centres close but Sheffield is bucking the trend by investing in our facilities.”

With communities at the heart of redevelopment plans, the council is also consulting international sporting stars and national governing bodies who call Sheffield home, including British Para Table Tennis and GB Boxing. This ensures that Sheffield’s leisure offer is suitable for our elite partners and our communities.

Councillor Hunt said: “We want to attract the very best providers to manage our future leisure provision and build on the great work of Sheffield City Trust. The council’s investment and the expertise we’re bringing in will ensure we provide facilities that meet the needs of our diverse communities, provide a fantastic entertainment and cultural offer, and attract global, iconic acts to Sheffield.”

Across the city there are a portfolio of leisure and entertainment facilities, some of these venues are owned by community organisations and others, including Graves and Thorncliffe, are

run by Places Leisure. The longest standing arrangements (which come to an end in 2024) are those with Sheffield City Trust (SCT), an independent charity which runs the City’s sport, leisure and entertainment facilities, including Ponds Forge, Hillsborough and the Arena.

The procurement for future leisure and entertainment providers will be structured into three packages. Each bidder will have the opportunity to tender for the packages that best suit their expertise: • Services for Sport and Leisure (including golf facilities) • Entertainment facilities – City Hall • Entertainment facility – the Arena

Complementing the SCT facilities, the contract with Places Leisure to operate Graves, Thorncliffe and Wisewood leisure centres is due for review in 2026. These facilities will be included in the Services for Sport and Leisure package to ensure best value and best outcomes for customers.

CAN YOU GIVE DETAILS ON WHY DARREN MOORE LEFT THE CLUB? First of all, let me make it clear that Darren’s departure had nothing to do with our recruitment process. That applies to the January transfer window and the process we will follow in the summer window. It was also nothing to do with budgets for the season ahead.

Regarding January, the recruitment team – which the manager has always been a part of since I was here – identified targets.

We got Aden Flint over the line and were very close on one more that Darren wished to bring in with my full support.

Unfortunately, the club who we were negotiating with changed their mind

at the last minute and we were unable to complete the deal, but this is football.

My belief was that we had a Championship squad playing in League One but of course if the manager wishes to add to the squad, I offer my full support as much as I can, which has always been the case. Any player we recruit in any window must be better than what we have to improve the squad, we will always do our best to make any transfer happen in that situation.

Our main recruitment drive was last summer and I believe the squad was good enough for promotion. But if the manager wants more, because of injuries or whatever, I will always help with that where possible in the January window.

I was asked the question on Tuesday – ‘do you think fans would agree with Darren leaving if I clarified more?’ I said some fans may, some may not, it would depend

on personal opinion. I said I do not like to talk too much about personal situations and I stand by that. The only thing I can add is that if I revealed the reasons, I am sure the majority would agree why we mutually agreed to go our separate ways.

squad of players we already have, that is not possible at any club. But he will work with the team and bring his own players identified to the team and after that the process is the same.

The recruitment team analyse every part of the player and then a decision is made from the shortlist. David Downes has left the club for personal reasons but if the head of a department leaves any team, that team should be able to move forward following the same process, it is never about one person.

We have other people in the team who can negotiate and we will continue to evolve. The new manager will come

in and put forward his players, maybe take some players out, and then we follow the process.

I was also asked on Tuesday once again about the situation of Amadeu (Paixao) and I am happy to clarify again, the same as before. Amadeu is my personal advisor, my private advisor, that is his position. He is part of the team and all the people in the team are important to me. It doesn’t mean they are the ones that can influence things or make decisions, that is always the manager or myself as chairman.
