Financial support for airport’s future City of Doncaster Council’s Cabinet is being asked to ring-fence over £3million towards the legal and programme costs associated with its ongoing fight to save Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

On Wednesday April 12, City of Doncaster Council’s Cabinet will discuss a report that sets out the current position in relation to Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) and the extensive activity being undertaken to secure the future of the airport. It also outlines the initial programme costs of up to £3.1m if a Compulsory Purchase Order is required.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed at the end of 2022 following a short

strategic review by its owners, despite the offer of financial support from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and City of Doncaster Council.

The project to re-open DSA has been called South Yorkshire Airport City. It aims to re-open the airport and grow a cluster of businesses and commercial activity that complements traditional aerospace functions, including logistics. The wider airport city development could incorporate employment, Research & Development, retail, leisure and residential opportunities, with excellent transport links, supporting new inward

investment into Doncaster and South Yorkshire.

Given the significant number of jobs and the major economic potential of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, the report highlights the council’s intention that the airport should be acquired from Peel with a view to its reopening.

Whilst the Council understands that there have been credible financial offers to purchase DSA, to date none of these has been accepted by current owners, Peel. Peel has recently offered a lease of the airport to City of Doncaster Council.

Discussions are taking place to progress this option and to explore whether a lease at a longer term and on a

different commercial basis than that initially offered by Peel could provide a basis upon which to achieve the Council’s objectives.

It is hoped that the legal and programme costs will ultimately be covered by regional funding recovered from a loan previously extended to Peel, with a decision by SYMCA on this funding anticipated in June 2023.

Doncaster is excited to welcome the Band of the Coldstream Guards at this year’s Armed Forces Day parade on Saturday 24 June.

The annual event to honour the Armed Forces Community is always a major occasion in Doncaster’s events calendar and an opportunity to come together to show our appreciation and gratitude to our brave servicemen and women.

The parade will see the band march through the streets of the city centre before arriving at a new and much larger venue for the Armed Forces Day event – Elmfield Park. Historically the event has seen a parade march to the Market Square, but the growth of the event in the last few years and the massive increase in parade participants means we’ve had to find a bigger space – but a space that allows the parade to still march through the city centre streets.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We are tremendously honoured to welcome the Band of the Coldstream Guards to Doncaster this year at our first Armed Forces Day as a new city.

The Coldstream Guards have the distinction of being the British Army’s oldest and longest serving Corps in continuous existence and we are extremely proud our association with the regiment.

Doncaster’s links with the regiment date back to 1660 when the General Monks regiment of foot, marched from Coldstream in Scotland to London to assist in the restoration of Charles II to the throne. During this march the regiment stopped off in Doncaster to rest and gather provisions. History has it the first “Donny lads” followed the drum and thus began a connection and history with Doncaster which stretches back over 360 years.

Tramlines Festival unveils even more artists

The 15th edition of Tramlines Festival, Sheffield’s Biggest Party, has just got bigger with the addition of even more music and quirky entertainment for the 2023 event. Taking place over threedays at Hillsborough Park, Sheffield from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July, this latest announcement also reveals the lineup of Tramlines’ very own pub, The Open Arms. Famed for its weird and wonderful acts and games, its ‘Speakers Corner’ bill of lyricists and spoken word artists curated by former Sheffield Poet Laureate Otis Mensah, and crowd-pulling DJ sets programmed by the Leadmill, there’s a lot more now in store for the celebratory event.

A whopping number of artists have already been announced for Tramlines 2023, which includes Richard Ashcroft, Courteeners, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, Sugababes, the DMA’s and so much more. Artists leading this latest announcement include the UK’s 2023 Eurovision entrant, Mae Muller. Sam Ryder road blocked the second stage in his appearance last year so Mae Muller is expected to follow suit!

Unfortunately the previously announced Beebadoobe can no longer play at Tramlines, fear not however, as organisers have added more chart-topping names including the outstanding voice of Ella Henderson, and Professor Green who’s back with a new EP later this year.

The hotly tipped shoegaze-Britpop outfit Chappaqua Wrestling have also been added alongside even more scorching talent including indie rap punk three-piece, Bilk, The K’s, Bonnie

Kemplay and Pattern & Push 2022 winner, Sarinity Jones.

The Open Arms stage has been an absolute hit with festival goers ever since its arrival in 2021 for its buzzing atmosphere and cabaret-style billing.

Tramlines is thrilled to reveal the return of Shaun Williams’ Barrioke for 2023 which pulls in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. There will be sing-alongs galore with Hip Hop Karaoke and Tragedy - Heavy Metal Bee Gees from NYC- games from Musical Bingo and Shell Suit Cher Bingo, world music from The Mariachis and German oompah band Brasswurst, and many more notto-missed performances including, The Daniel Wakeford Experience, and the band born out of Sheffield’s disability arts charity, Under The Stars.

Improving safety NEW HEART ATTACK TREATMENT family business in Rotherham offers complete town centre funeral service Rotherham Council has been able to secure funding to deliver a range of safety improvements in the town centre.

Home Office funding is awarded to South Yorkshire Police that can be used to support projects and initiatives that help to reduce levels of violence and crime. The Council successfully applied for some of this funding.

A range of improvement projects have been delivered in the town centre, including: • New lighting at Snail Hill • A replacement fire door at Wellgate multi-storey car park • Upgrades to the ‘Shop Link’ radios, which will help town centre businesses communicate with one another if an incident takes place Work is also taking place to install new CCTV at High Street and at Snail Hill.

Councillor Saghir Alam, Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, Community Safety and Finance at Rotherham Council, said: “I am pleased that the Council has been able to secure funding to deliver a range of improvements including extra CCTV and new lighting.

“We want the town centre to be a safe and welcoming place for all. The Council continues to work closely with partners including South Yorkshire Police and town centre businesses to ensure that everyone who is out in Rotherham town centre feels safe.”

Rotherham District Commander Chief Superintendent Laura Koscikiewicz, said: “We’re proud to be part of Rotherham and want our communities to feel safe and confident while out in the town.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to play a leading role in a major trial assessing the use of smart technologies to support the recovery of heart attack patients.

The Trust is one of three trusts nationally, alongside Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to trial a new digital care platform which will enable cardiac rehabilitation services to be delivered to patients in their own homes through mobile apps, Fitbits and novel digital technologies.

More than 100,000 patients a year in the UK access cardiac rehabilitation services on the NHS following a heart attack, heart surgery or stent procedure.

Cardiac rehabilitation services play a vital role in a heart attack patient’s overall recovery, and are delivered through a structured programme of exercise and supporting sessions. These sessions, which are recommended by NICE, are tailored to an individual patient’s needs and have been shown to reduce the risk of mortality, another heart event, hospital readmission following a heart attack, heart surgery or stent procedure. They also lower healthcare costs and improve the quality of cardiovascular disease patients’ lives.

The technology, known as the Digitally Enhanced Rehabilitation in Cardiac Patients (DERIC) care platform, uses a Fitbit smartwatch to help patients measure heart rate, rhythm and physical activity and plugs into a mobile app. Patients are also able to enter additional health data (such as blood pressure and weight) and answer questions about diet and other health information in a mobile app. This information can then be accessed remotely by doctors, nurses and other health professionals as part of the patient’s care plan.

Professor Rob Storey, Professor of Cardiology and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist in Sheffield, said: “Cardiac rehabilitation helps patients with cardiovascular disease in their recovery from a wide range of heart events, such as following a heart attack or heart surgery. We need to investigate new ways of providing cardiac rehab so that this can be embraced by a larger proportion of people with cardiovascular disease.

“The DERIC study will assess whether novel technologies provide a solution for delivering the same benefits as current cardiac rehab systems in a way that may be extended to a larger number of people who could benefit, particularly those who currently find it hard to attend cardiac rehab sessions.

We will learn much more from this study about the potential of modern digital technologies for improving cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.”

Professor Tim Chico, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Cardiology at the University of Sheffield, who is also the Thematic Lead for Personal Monitoring Data at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Data Science Centre, said: “There is huge potential from combining personal monitoring data with other types of health data in order to provide the greatest support for people to improve their cardiovascular health and sense of wellbeing. The DERIC study provides an exciting opportunity to demonstrate how personal monitoring may transform the way that we deliver health care.”

The trial is being supported by NHS Digital Health Partnership Awards Funding, which was given in recognition of the potential for high quality and effectiveness of the platform in remotely supporting patients living with cardiovascular disease or at risk of developing it.

The Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Evening returns!

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity are once again turning Doncaster Racecourse purple when their Charity Race Evening, sponsored by Ant Marketing, returns this year on Friday 2nd June.

The Weston Park Cancer Charity Race Evening, which has in previous years raised tens of thousands towards cancer care, treatment and research, is back for another year of live horse racing, fantastic hospitality and entertainment.

They are delighted to share that the first five race evenings have raised almost £200,000. This has helped to provide cancer support services, enabled vital research and improve treatment experiences for people facing cancer.

In addition to raising tens of thousands of pounds for the Charity, many of the racegoers

help to spread vital awareness of the charity’s work by wearing purple for the day – with an award recognising the ‘best dressed’ guests at the event. Truly turning Doncaster Racecourse purple!

The evening of entertainment and fundraising wouldn’t be possible without this year’s dedicated main sponsor, Sheffield-based telemarketing company, Ant Marketing. Anthony Hinchliffe, CEO of Ant Marketing, holds the cause very close to his heart having been a patient at Weston Park in 2017. Fortunately, Anthony was given the all-clear and is now a generous supporter and patron of the charity.

Anthony said: “Weston park saved my life. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2017 and was treated at Weston Park Hospital. The treatment and support I received was just

incredible and to be able to give something back to the charity which will go on to provide support to others means so much to me. It was so powerful, and that’s the reason for my support. Weston Park is Sheffield at its best.”

Featuring a big screen on Devonshire Green, Sheffield’s free official Eurovision Party will be jam packed with all of the Euro music glitz and glam you have come to expect including street performers, dance acts, traditional Ukrainian musicians and Sheffield will be playing host to Marina Krutь – Marina came second in the competition to be this year’s Ukrainian entry with 33,000 votes and will be travelling over from Ukraine to join the party.

Some big surprises which will be announced in the coming weeks mean Sheffield’s Eurovision party is not to be missed.

said: “We are so excited to be hosting an official Eurovision party right here in the city centre alongside and in solidarity with the Ukrainian community of Sheffield.

EARLY SETBACK COSTS BLADES OWLS WORTHY OF THE WIN - MOORE The Blades run of four consecutive wins all in competitions came to a disappointing end at Turf Moor on Monday evening.

Following the firsthalf dismissal of Wes Foderingham, two goals after the break from substitute Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson saw the Clarets all but seal the title having won promotion at Middlesbrough on Good Friday.

United made two changes for the trip to Lancashire, with McBurnie and Norwood recalled at the expense of Sharp and McAtee, who dropped to the bench.
