council fail in bid to buy airport site The owners of Doncaster Sheffield Airport have rejected an offer from Doncaster Council to buy the site, the city’s mayor has said.

Ros Jones said the council was now considering Peel Group’s alternative proposal of a potential leasehold sale.

The local authority is preparing legal action to force a sale if an agreement can not be reached.

Peel Group closed the airport in November

last year, saying it was no longer financially viable.

The council said last month it planned to pursue a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) after its application for a judicial review of the decision to close the airport was rejected.

Ms Jones said the authority was “keen to avoid a costly legal battle if at all possible” to keep the airport open and had approached Peel to discuss the potential freehold purchase

of the site. She said that would “secure its future” ahead of the CPO process, and “make the transaction considerably easier and quicker” but Peel declined the approach.

“However, they have proposed a potential leasehold sale, which we are considering, whilst we continue with the preparatory stages of a CPO,” she said.

A leasehold sale would mean the council owned the airport for a set period

but would eventually return it to Peel and would not own the land it is built on.

The last passengers touched down at the South Yorkshire

airport on 4 November.

Peel said at the time it had received “no credible proposal” to buy the site, which it said was not profitable.

Sensory Sundays return to Crystal Peaks for 2023 There will be a monthly atmosphere of calm at Crystal Peaks as Sensory Sundays make their return for 2023.

The award winning shopping is a supporter of National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour and that event proved so popular that it was decided that one Sunday in every month should be classed as a Sensory Sunday Shops, cafes and businesses throughout the complex were asked to implement a range of simple solutions to make the shopping experience easier for people living with autism and conditions such as Sensory Perception Disorder, Hyperacusis, Bell’s Palsy and stress - all of which can cause sound sensitivity.

Those changes ranged from dimming bright lights and reducing tannoy announcements to turning down music, creating a calmer Sunday shopping experience.

Hand driers are also switched off - along with children’s rides - and vending machines are set to silent.

Sensory Sundays make their return on the third Sunday of every month, taking place between 10am

and 2pm, starting on January 15.

There are currently around 700,000 autistic people in the UK, as well as three million family members and carers.

Being autistic means seeing, hearing and feeling the world in a different, often more intense way to other people.

Autistic people often find social situations difficult and can struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, which can make busy public places like shopping malls overwhelming.

As a result, 64 per cent of people with autism avoid things like going to the shops, quite often because of the bright lights, the music, the general noise and the information overload.

“We are so pleased that Sensory Sundays are back as a regular part of the Crystal Peaks calendar for 2023,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood.

“Crystal Peaks is very much a part of the wider community and, as such, we want to make the shopping experience the best we can for all our visitors.

“These are very simple measures that we will be implementing and asking our shops to implement too but those simple changes could have a very positive impact for autistic people and their families without impacting on our other visitors.”

Sheffield’s Working Jobs Fair brings opportunities to Gleadless Opportunity Sheffield is looking forward to a new year of monthly community events, starting with a Sheffield’s Working Jobs Fair at Terry Wright Hall Community Centre in Gleadless on Tuesday 24 January.

Sheffield’s Working Jobs Fairs are a collaboration with Job Centre Plus South Yorkshire, and bring Opportunity Sheffield’s skills and training services, to both employed and unemployed people living in Sheffield.

Opportunity Sheffield provide training to help people into work, as well as to those already in employment looking to progress. The team will be on hand along with a wide range of local employers, talking about their latest vacancies and routes into working with them.

Employers at the Gleadless event include Aviva, NHS Health and Social Care, Vodaphone, The Sheffield College, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and many more.

Representatives from Job Centre Plus will also be happy to help visitors with support and applications.

“These job fairs are a great opportunity for people to meet us in their communities, to see what we can offer,” said Sarah Higgins, Sheffield’s Working Project Officer.

“We always have such a positive response. Doing localised events works really well, because we bring the opportunities to suburban areas of Sheffield so

that visitors don’t have to spend too much time and money travelling across the city to find us.

“We’re taking the next Jobs Fair to Gleadless. Even if you aren’t from the area, the transport links are good, and we are excited to have some great returning and new employers joining us this month!”

Abbeydale Picture House launches ‘dry’ bar and issues update Sheffield arts charity CADS are currently six years into a 25 year lease of the Abbeydale Picture House. 2022 saw them evicted following a dispute with the landlord over roof repairs.

Last week they launched a pop-up ‘dry bar’ providing a range of non-alcoholic drinks and on Sunday 22nd they will host a ‘baby rave’ event from 12pm - 2pm for families who have the urge to dance but can’t stay up too late! The month will conclude with a techno based Collect! event on the 28th, making use of all the available parts of the building.

In yet another twist to the story, the application from the UK Government’s Community Ownership

Fund has not been successful leading to a shortfall of over £250k in the amount needed to buy the building. The team at the Abbeydale Picture House have now renovated and reopened several parts of the building in recent months but are still unable to use the main auditorium with its unique and beautiful barrel vaulted ceiling. With huge costs associated in running the building the CADS team are keen to hear from anyone keen to partner on the purchase, to run events in the space or take on particular areas of the venue.

The main auditorium remains dangerous, uninsurable and in need of huge investment before it

can be used. In addition to the roof damage the rear fire escape ramp required for the auditorium is subsiding and also in need of serious work. The CADS team are clear that owning the property is the best way to unlock the funding and investment needed to bring the whole building back into public use.

Despite the areas of the space no longer in use, the CADS team have the dramatic and historically important ‘Fly Tower’ located behind the original cinema screen with a 60 capacity which has the antique fire screen still in situ. This area has been made into an event space that played host to recent World Cup football screenings and regularly

hosts, bands, performances and even wedding receptions. The new ‘Side Bar’ area now looks like a speakeasy 1920s style saloon bar and this will be the location of the new pop-up dry bar, perfect for those who never drink and those who are looking to cut down or go dry for January in 2023.

Abbeydale Road has a rich history of ‘Temperance Bars’ which were popular during the heyday of the cinema; signage for a neighbouring temperance bar is still visible on a neighbouring antique shop.

These establishments would typically serve Sarsaparilla, cordials and other botanical concoctions as an alternative to alcohol

based drinks. The modern dry bar at the Picture House will include delicious alcohol free beer, wine and spirits.

This new bar is just the first of a huge wave of new events, markets

and screenings planned.

The public are invited to consider uses of the building for public events, markets, and private hires.

get your flu jab now! pets and wellbeing some stress-busters A leading doctor in West Yorkshire is calling on people who haven’t yet had their flu and COVID vaccinations to come forward as soon as possible. Dr James Thomas, GP and Medical Director for the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, is making the plea as both viruses continue to spread widely across the region and put increasing pressure on already stretched NHS services.

As expected, cases of both viruses rose sharply over the Christmas and New Year period, as did the number of hospital admissions. Figures last week showed that nationally one in every eight hospital beds is being used for someone with either COVID or flu. And experts fear this will continue to be a strain on the NHS for the remaining winter months, with the XBB1.5 variant that is spreading extremely rapidly in the US also being a cause for concern.

Almost two thirds of those eligible for a COVID booster in South Yorkshire have already had the vital top up jab since the rollout started last autumn. However, that means there are still over 400,000 people at increased risk from the virus who have yet to get protected. Dr Thomas, who also leads the NHS West Yorkshire Vaccination Programme, said: “We understand that people may be tired of having to get vaccinated but this is the only way to keep people safe and live with COVID. Immunity wanes over time, so the booster is needed to bring your protection back up to the highest level. There has been no let up for

NHS staff, who are now having to contend with a ‘twindemic’ of Covid and flu at a time when the NHS is also facing record demand on services and very high vacancy and sickness rates. We are particularly concerned that there are people with health conditions that put them at increased risk of both COVID and flu who have not had their jabs yet. These viruses can be very serious for people with conditions such as heart or kidney disease, or respiratory conditions as you may not be able to fight off the virus as well as other people, whatever your age. More than 100,000 people were kept out of hospital last winter thanks to the Covid-19 vaccinations. And the more people that have the maximum protection, the less chance there is for these viruses to circulate unabated and cause serious illness.”

National Highways’ gritters will be back out on the roads in the coming days with a period of cold weather due.

It is also reminding motorists to give gritters plenty of space and time on the road after revealing one of its vehicles was hit by another vehicle while out salt spreading earlier this winter. Road users should also consider the following steps to keep safe on the road in terms of planning for their journey, keeping pace with the latest weather forecasts, and ensuring they carry out regular vehicle checks.

Met Office forecasters are predicting a change to cooler conditions from the beginning of this week.

Showers from the north could fall as snow over the high ground in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland later in the weekend, with a wintry mix of rain, hail, sleet and snow possible at the start of next week, especially over high ground. Ice is likely to be an ongoing hazard for most from Sunday onwards. Stay up to date with the latest warnings on the Met Office website.

Darren Clark, Severe Weather Resilience Manager, at National Highways said: “We would ask all road users to take extra care when driving when our gritters are out on our road. Whilst gritters

travel up to 50mph when spreading road users need to be aware of the road and traffic ahead of them.

We have had an incident this winter where the rear of a gritter was hit. We ask all road users to give our staff time and space to do their job safely, and if you see our vehicles indicating to change lanes please do what you can to safely help us to do this.”

National Highways has road temperature and weather forecast contracts with independent meteorological experts DTN and Metdesk running from 1 October to 30 April and complement the national Met Office weather forecast, by providing a level of granularity and precision about changing road surface temperatures across our road network so they know when and where to grit. Darren said: “Not all roads will need treating on any given day.

Gritters may need to go out in some regions if road temperatures fall below +1 degrees C, and if there is a risk of frost or ice forming, but not in other areas if conditions are not as cold. about where and when For road users we suggest always check the weather forecasts, plan your journey, allowing more time for travel in wintry conditions, and carry out regular vehicle checks such as your coolant and tyre pressures.”

removal update The containers on Fargate will begin to be dismantled from Monday, January 30th.

The businesses currently operating inside have been informed of the Council’s intentions to close the container complex by the end of the month.

The dismantling process will take several weeks and will be completed in time for Future High Streets Fund work to begin.

Councillors are set to decide the future use for the containers at Strategy and Resources Committee on Tuesday, January 24th. An outline of the options will be presented in a report to the Committee.

We will also be conducting an internal audit report about the project to highlight lessons for the future and apply that learning to future projects.”

BLADES OPEN UP PROMOTION GAP CONTINUING OUR WORK - MOORE United opened up an 11-point gap to third place, with a third straight home win, this time Stoke City leaving empty-handed.

First-half goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Jayden Bogle put the Blades in command, only for Nick Powell to reduce the deficit before the break, bit Bogle’s second late on saw United home, meaning it is just one loss in 13 games in all competitions.

Boss Heckingbottom made four changes from the last league fixture at QPR. Bogle and Lowe replaced the injured Baldock and Stevens, whilst McAtee was recalled, and Robinson started with Clark absent with a hamstring issue.

Stoke were the first side to register a shot on target inside 90 seconds, but Baker’s effort was tame and comfortable for Foderingham. With their first meaningful attack though, United took a ninth minute lead as NDIAYE started

and finished the move, with a left-footed strike from Lowe’s cross, with McAtee also involved in the build-up.

The early goal had given the Blades and the home faithful a boost and McAtee demonstrated nibble feet to fashion a shot which he curled over, before Powell drew another save from Foderingham. A scrappy ten-minute spell followed, but that ended when BOGLE robbed Laurent of the ball, advanced forward and saw his shot take a favorable deflection off Jagielka which wrongfooted Bonham and rolled into the net.

But right on the stroke of half-time, Stoke gave themselves a lifeline.

POWELL had early been denied by a Robinson block, but from the resulting throw-in his ball into the box evaded the run of Brown and his marker Robinson but nestled into the bottom corner of Foderingham’s far post.

A flurry of bookings were the talking points of the opening minutes of the second period, as Laurent went into the book for the visitors followed by Bogle and Egan for the hosts, as Doyle replaced McAtee. There was little goalmouth action at either end, but more worryingly for the Blades Ndiaye limped off with Jebbison taking his place and immediately looking to stretch the Stoke defence.

On 76 minutes, Bogle played the ball into the teenager striker, his backheel freed the marauding Berge, but the Norwegian international couldn’t keep his effort on target. At the other end, Campbell did well on the right and from his cross Brown got across his marker, but not for the first time, Foderingham showed a safe pair of hands.

Prior to five minutes of added time being signalled, BOGLE made sure of the three points, applying the finishing

touch from close-range having started the move and benefited from a fortunate rebound from Jagielka’s attempted clearance, with Doyle claiming the assist. Foderingham demonstrated his bravery before the final whistle, as Souttar somehow avoided a red card for tugging back Jebbison, but it mattered not a jot.

heroics, it’s very easy to get distracted, but we spoke on Monday about getting our feet back on the floor and continuing our work and I’m pleased they’ve done it today.

“The resilience that we’ve been keeping in the last weeks and months, we knew we would need that today.

“We knew we had to match them for tempo and have a solid platform and we had that today.

“We had to shuffle the pack due to Mark McGuinness going back

and I thought it was the right game to bring Reece James onto the left wing and bring Akin in. We moved Dom Iorfa into the middle with Liam Palmer to his right and Jack Hunt came back in, so there was a reshuffle.

“Everyone knows their jobs and their responsibilities and apart from a couple of crosses and long range efforts, I can’t remember Cameron Dawson having to do much.”

Vaulks will take the plaudits following his

match-winner in the first half and Moore praised the midfielder for his strong display.

The Wednesday gaffer added: “Will Vaulks scored a goal like that at Port Vale earlier in the season and when he catches them clean like that, they’re going to put any goalkeeper in trouble. I think the goal was worthy to win any game. I thought his all round game was good, he competed well in midfield and he was solid.”

Millers boss Matt Taylor showed nothing but optimism following his side’s 4-0 dismantling of promotion hopefuls Blackburn Rovers.

It was a brilliant performance from his Millers side, as they swept aside a 3rdplaced Rovers team thanks to memorable strikes from Odoffin, Rathbone, Ferguson, and Washington. The win lifts Matt Taylor’s side four points clear and three places outside the

Speaking to the press after the game, here is what the gaffer had to say...

“It feels good. It’s not felt good for the last six weeks or so. We’ll certainly enjoy this moment.We had the early goal to hold onto, it gave us belief. We were ugly at times, but we were where we needed to be on that football pitch. We competed so, so well.

We kept them at arm’s length.

“It’s gone against us recently and we’ve felt ourselves at a low in the first five minutes of games. So to be ahead in that manner – a really clean strike – you can just see what it did to the whole place. The whole feel of football is underestimated and sometimes it’s difficult to change.

“That goal gave us a real boost, a real shot in the arm. And we grew in confidence as the game went on.

“It was a really good strike from Ollie. Our first two goals were really quality strikes, really clean strikes. We were aggressive at times and had to withstand a bit of possession from the opposition because they’re a quality outfit and they could trouble us.

“We can’t underestimate how we’re feeling after that, we’re really positive in relation to the result.”

Danny Schofield is confident that new signing Todd Miller has the right attributes to improve Rovers’ attacking threat during his loan spell.

The winger opted to spend the remainder of the season with Rovers on loan from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

And Schofield believes Miller can help add goals to the team.

The head coach said: “We do have a number of players who can play in that number ten position but we wanted

a player who could add more speed and more explosive sprints as well as someone who can produce assists and score more goals.

“That’s an area we need to improve on and hopefully Todd can add to that.”

Schofield is keen to help accelerate the 20-yearold’s development as he embarks on the first loan spell of his young career.

Miller joined Brighton in 2019 after becoming Colchester United’s youngest ever player.

“I think his journey has been an interesting

one,” Schofield said.

“There was a lot of hype about him when he was at Colchester as a young player. He’s then gone to a club with an outstanding Academy with really good people who help to develop players.

“They were really eager to get Todd a league club for his first loan. I know there were a number of clubs interested and Todd had his choice, which was us and that is excellent.

“I think his development will continue here. He’s got to come and add value and impact to the

team and that’s what we’re hoping for.

“It shows the good work that we’re doing here collectively as a staff. We spoke to Todd and his agent about where we see him figuring in the team, where we feel he can develop, where he can add value to the team and what we’re trying to do.

“It’s got to be the right person and the right player to add to the squad. They need to adapt quickly and find their feet in the squad and we feel Todd can do that.”

Alex Mighten has returned to parent club Nottingham Forest.

The 20-year-old joined the Owls on loan in August and made 16 appearances in all competitions.
