Are you driving home for Christmas? With industrial action affecting plans, adverse weather creating added risks and the countdown to the Christmas break underway, road users are being urged to check their vehicles before travelling. Roadside recovery companies are currently reporting a surge in call outs, with a combination of factors bringing major disruption to the UK’s transport network. And with days to go before South Yorkshire schools break up for the Christmas holidays, South

Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) is urging people to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy to avoid preventable breakdowns. A spokeswoman for the partnership said: “With the current icy conditions, planned disruption on the rail network and more freezing temperatures forecast, our roads pose even more risks than usual in the run up to one of the busiest times of year. “Making sure your car is fully fit for your journey could not only save you

and your family a lot of heartache, but ensure that you, your occupants and other road users are as safe as possible. “The main things to check are fuel, tyres, water, oil and lights. You should also check that your vehicle has an up-to-date MOT certificate and has been serviced.” Motorists are advised to keep a breakdown kit in their boot, including a blanket, torch, hi-viz jacket, water and puncture repair kit. Also, make sure that you have de-icer and an ice-

scraper to hand to ensure that your windscreen and rear window clear are fully clear of ice or snow before setting off to ensure good all-round vision. For those planning a long journey to see family or friends, think about the time you are setting off and avoid drinking alcohol the night before. “Simple things like avoiding rush hour and having a good night’s sleep will increase your chances of a smooth and safe journey,” added the spokeswoman.

“No-one wants to be stuck at the roadside when they should be in a warm house surrounded by loved ones at such a special time of year. “Don’t take extra risks – please play your part in helping everyone getting to see their family as safely as possible during the travel window. “The team here at Safer Roads wishes everyone a safe and happy Christmas.”
