SHEFFIELD’S BIG CHRISTMAS SWITCH ON Sheffield will come together this Christmas to celebrate the festive season, with the Christmas Lights Switch On event, a Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto, the big wheel, festive bars and more, kicking off this Friday, 18th November.

The Christmas Market, festive bars, rides and big wheel will all open on the 18th with the big light switch on event will take place on Sunday 20th.

This year’s Sheffield Christmas Lights Switch On will get the festive season off with a bang as the city celebrates the illuminations

with fun and fireworks.

Taking place across the city centre on Sunday 20th November from 2 to 6.30pm (the switch on of the illuminations at 6pm) with a dual switch on from Barkers Pool and Town Hall Square.

Activities include street entertainers, choirs, the Christmas market, Santa’s Grotto, fairground, dance, panto and of course some special guests to switch on the lights.

Details, at the time of press, are still to be announced about who will be taking on the big switch this year.

Fireworks will follow the

switch on and you’ll be able to see them from Barkers Pool, Pinstone St, the Peace Gardens, Fargate, Surrey St and Cambridge St. Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee, said: “Christmas is a time when we come together with family, friends, and colleagues, lifting our spirits and bringing a lot of joy as the winter draws in.

“It’s also a crucial time of year for independent businesses and our hospitality industry so it’s more important than

ever that we support them during this period.

“We’ve got all the usual festive treats and activities on offer for everyone to enjoy. A little bit of Christmas magic can bring

a lot of cheer and I think we all need that right now.”

Lights, camera, action – Ground works begin on Rotherham’s flagship Forge Island Ground works have begun on Rotherham’s Forge Island development – soon to be home of a state-of-the-art cinema, 69 room hotel, and six restaurants providing food from around the world.

Residents passing Forge Island will be able to see diggers and heavy plant vehicles on site as they prepare to lay foundations for the £47m development, being delivered by master developer, Muse, in partnership with Rotherham Council.

Once complete, the new destination will provide something for residents and families to enjoy right in the heart of Rotherham town centre, which will include a variety of exciting features including the boutique 8 screen cinema from The Arc, each with laser digital projection and Dolby digital surround sound for the ultimate film experience The scheme is 100% pre-let with Travelodge who will be offering visitors a range of a hotel rooms.

Finally, five food and beverage brands have already signed up to the scheme and will showcase food and drink from across the globe – the sixth will be announced shortly.

Rotherham Council’s Leader, Cllr Chris Read, said: “Forge Island is the single biggest investment in our

town centre for decades. It will be the first cinema in the central area for thirty years and the community has waited a very long time to see this work begin.

As we face into the difficult economic times ahead, it’s more important than ever to redouble our efforts to build a better future on the other side. So this marks a huge step in the right direction in the delivery of our town centre masterplan, towards the kind of town centre that people can be proud of once again.”

KASABIAN TO PLAY EXCLUSIVE GIG IN SHEFFIELD

RADIO X PRESENTS KASABIAN WITH BARCLAYCARD LIVE AT THE O2 ACADEMY AT THE END OF THE MONTH After a triumphant headline performance at this summer’s Tramlines Festival Kasabian return to Sheffield fo an exclusive gig for fans at the end of the month, Radio X Presents Kasabian with Barclaycard.

The gig will take place at O2 Academy Sheffield on Monday 28th November 2022.

Kasabian have built a reputation as one of the greatest live acts on the planet and the Leicester group made their highly anticipated return earlier this year, going on to score their sixth number one album with the release of the critically acclaimed

‘The Alchemist’s Euphoria’.

The BRIT Award-winning four-piece wowed fans at major festivals including Tramlines plus outdoor shows this summer, including Liam Gallagher’s iconic Knebworth gigs.

They have played to huge crowds at arenas around the country this year, as part of their UK and European tour.

Radio X Presents Kasabian with Barclaycard will see the band play to just under 2000 Radio X listeners, and so the gig is a rare opportunity for fans to see them in a venue of this size.

Radio X’s Toby Tarrant announced the gig on air this morning.

South Yorkshire’s Supertram on track for £8.6m upgrade A £8.6 million funding package for South Yorkshire’s Supertram system has been given the green light by local leaders, to pay for urgent renewal work.

A further £4.3m has been approved to make the case to Government for significant additional investment in Supertram, as parts of the system come to the end of their working life.

Last month South Yorkshire’s leaders voted to take Supertram back into public ownership when its current contract with Stagecoach ends in 2024.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: ‘Supertram is a huge asset to South Yorkshire and is critical to the work we’re doing to fix our public transport system. This money will make big improvements for passengers.

“Supertram is part of South Yorkshire’s heritage and this money will help keep it on track into the future, as it becomes a publicly owned, publicly operated venture. While significant work has already taken

place to replace sections of track, parts of the system are coming to the end of their working life.

So we’re also putting a case to Government for the investment we need to keep the system going for future generations.

“Fixing our public transport system will not be quick, cheap or easy. But we have started the important journey that we need to take to build the system that our region deserves; one that meets the needs of our communities and delivers a faster, smarter, greener public transport network that South Yorkshire can be proud of.”

The funding forms part of a £100 million Government grant to modernise the system, including track and infrastructure improvements and better facilities for passengers.

Results of a 2018 consultation showed strong support from the public for a proposed investment scheme in the Supertram system.

children benefit from roadshow Deaf children in Sheffield were given the opportunity to learn more about deafness on Wednesday 2 November, with a series of informative and engaging workshops from the National Deaf Children’s Society’s Roadshow.

The Roadshow is an eight-ton purple lorry that tours the UK and turns into a high-tech classroom. On this occasion it visited Angram Bank Primary School in Sheffield to give support, advice and information to some of the city’s deaf children and young people, as well as their hearing

friends, teachers and parents. The deaf pupils from Angram Bank enjoyed the Roadshow’s workshops on topics such as online safety and emotional health and wellbeing, while for the school’s hearing pupils, the Roadshow team also delivered an assembly about deaf awareness.

The workshops are designed with the needs of deaf children and young people in mind, and focus on building confidence and self-esteem. They also raise awareness about deafness among teachers and parents, and show hearing children how to

The charity also showcased the latest technology and equipment available to deaf children, including things like flashing doorbells, vibrating alarm clocks and the latest apps that can transform how deaf children communicate. Steve Gardiner, of the charity’s Roadshow team and who is deaf himself, said: “The Roadshow is touring the UK to help empower deaf children and young people and raise awareness of deafness among their friends, family and teachers. It’s amazing to see at firsthand the amazing impact it has on their lives. Deaf children can sometimes achieve less than their hearing classmates at school due to a lack of support.

The latest addition to the Council Housing Stock Increase Programme is the completion of Buchanan Green Older Persons Independent Living Scheme (OPIL) in Parson Cross for the over 60s.

The housing strategy identified a significant shortage of older persons accommodation and choice of homes for this age group so this development, which consists of 132 units, 114 apartments and 18 bungalows, and is due to open in the coming months, is a step towards improving the supply of the right type of homes for older people. Half of the new properties will be for the over 60s to bid for under Choice Based Lettings and the other half for these older adults referred through the council’s adult social care service. Those who live in the purpose-built properties will benefit from larger than average accommodation with the latest assistive technology, out-of-hours concierge, a guest flat for family and friends, private balconies or a garden and access to outdoor space. Pets will also be welcome.

More housing planned Two further OPIL schemes in the south and southeast of the city at Hemsworth and Newstead are also planned.

The Council have already increased the number and variety of homes available in Sheffield and several schemes are in progress.

As a priority too, the Council are making significant investments now and over the next 5 years to improve the quality of existing council homes, so that everyone can have a warm, safe, and affordable home to live in. This investment programme is creating thousands of apprenticeships and employment opportunities for the city. Councillor Douglas Johnson, Chair of Housing Policy Committee, said: “Buchanan Green is another important step on our way to providing much needed council homes, which will be a mixture of new properties built by the council and the purchase of existing properties and new build homes ‘off plan’ from developers. We’re on target with this building programme and the planning that goes with it to provide more houses in the right areas and of the right size and specification.

In terms of repairing the council homes that we already have; we’re doing our best to catch up with the outstanding repairs that are needed. The backlog was affected by the pandemic, and we know how important it is to our tenants to get through this work properly and quickly. We are all aware too of the huge increase in energy bills which will impact on the community heating charge and on all tenants because of the increases in costs from energy suppliers.

As winter approaches, families with disabled or seriously ill children face dauntingly grave financial challenges, according to latest research findings.

In its latest poll, national charity Family Fund shows how prospects for the families it supports continue to worsen, as they grapple with the ever-rising cost of living for day-to-day needs.

Last year, Family Fund delivered over 170,919 grants and services, worth over £37 million, to families on low incomes across the UK. The charity’s Cost of Caring report, published last month for the first time, showed deteriorating conditions for families with disabled and seriously ill children.

The report covered four quarterly polls in the year that followed the pandemic. Cheryl Ward, Family Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our latest figures show that families with disabled and seriously ill children continue to face daunting financial challenges, which are worsening as winter approaches. The majority of families who have been supported by Family Fund have shared with us how they are struggling to cover mounting debts and worry constantly about how they are going to clothe and feed their children, fund transport for medical appointments and heat their homes. We are doing everything we can to support families whose costs are already three times higher to care for, and raise, their disabled children than costs for other children. We urge families who need support with urgent and essential items this winter to go to our website to see if we can help them.”

Key findings from latest quarterly poll with UK families raising a disabled child or young person: Impact on households: • average household income for families has fallen by over £660 in the last 12 months; • almost 60% of families (59%) report an increase in household bills of more than £100 a month; • 9 in ten families report they are struggling

or falling behind on household bills (92%); • one in five families (21%) say their debt levels have risen by more than £1,000 in the last 12 months; • nearly 80 per cent of families (78%) have no savings to fall back on; • 75% of families say they would not be able to save £10 a month; • 58% have cut or skipped meals; • 40% have gone hungry because there was not enough money for food; • 48% are cutting back on energy; • over one third (35%) of families are cutting back on transport costs; • over one third (31%) of households said they have gone without carpets because they can’t afford them; • 11% have gone without a cooker or fridge; • 23% have gone without curtains; • 20% have gone without beds; • 27% have used a food bank; Impact on disabled children: • 63% of families have cut back on play and recreational activities with their disabled child; • 31% are cutting back on toys or sensory toys for their disabled child; • 16% said they would like fresh fruit or vegetables every day for their disabled child;

Save the Abbeydale Picture House!

Public invited to get involved with campaign to save historic Sheffield building 2022 has been a challenging year for Sheffield arts charity CADS who have since 2017 undertaken a long term lease with the aim of restoring the Abbeydale Picture house. A dispute with their landlord over roofing repairs led to an unexpected eviction in May. They regained access to the building in June and are now continuing the long term restoration project.

The main auditorium is still out of use due the much needed roof repairs but several alternative areas of the building are now available to use. Like the entire building, these spaces are stuffed with unique features including original plasterwork and antique projectors for film screenings. With large costs involved in running and maintaining the building, CADS urgently needs to find new ways to use the space with the largest area still out of action. There’s many ways Sheffielders can get involved to help save this incredible building.

The CADS team have three new spaces perfect for many different types of events and are inviting the public to get involved by making use of these spaces.

Steve Rimmer from CADS said; ‘With the main Theatre auditorium still out of action

due to the still unresolved dispute with the landlord over roofing repairs, the team have decided to press other parts of this historic site into public use. This is intended to raise some much needed capital to assist in the fight to save this important cultural landmark but also to introduce you to some of the many possibilities it can offer and invite public participation in curating, performing or just getting involved! Aside from the ‘Fly Tower’ which has and is being used for film screenings, talks and small scale performances, we have a charming ground floor bar available.

They are both receiving some renovation and will open very soon for a series of pop up bar events, Christmas parties and will be available for private hire on request. Later in November before we open fully we’ll be inviting you all to come and have a look around, have a drink and we’ll be available to chat if you think you can help Save The Abbeydale PH in any way, great or small! Keep your eye out, dates will be announced soon!’
