Next stage of fieldwork complete at Castlegate Geoarchaeological fieldwork required for plans to regenerate the historic area of Castlegate is now complete.

Throughout the summer, geoarchaeological investigations were carried out by archaeology and heritage specialists, Wessex Archaeology.

The location of each of the 33 boreholes was carefully planned to add information to the previously conducted archaeological excavations.

Analysis of the core samples from the boreholes will add to existing knowledge of the site, to hopefully help provide a greater understanding of the history of Sheffield Castle as well

helping to inform the council’s redevelopment plans.

The work forms part of plans to redevelop Castlegate and re-establish it as a vital part of the city centre.

The council secured £20m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund last year to see through its vision for the area, which includes: • De-culverting the River Sheaf • Creating attractive green public spaces • Interpreting the history of the site • Preparing land for future redevelopment • Understanding the archaeology of the site including the remains of

Sheffield Castle • Establishing Harmony Works – A destination for all things music in Sheffield.

The plans will see Sheffield Music Hub and Sheffield Music Academy come together to create a musical hub in the currently empty Canada House.

• Developing S1 Art Space – A creative workspace which aims to be one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the North.

“This is another exciting step towards transforming Castlegate into a thriving part of the city centre, as it was when the castle originally stood. We’re passionate about making Sheffield a flourishing and vibrant city and these plans are a crucial element to achieving our ambitions.”

THE LEADMILL RELEASE VIDEO FEATURING LOCAL LEGENDS IN SUPPORT OF THE #WECANTLOSELEADMILL CAMPAIGN The Leadmill have released a video in support of their #WeCantLoseLeadmill campaign, encouraging members of the public to sign their petition ( petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/614202 ) which closes on the 25th October.

The video includes worldfamous names such as Eddie Izzard and Miles Kane, alongside a range of South Yorkshire based musical talent.

The video also features members of The Leadmill team, as well as leaders of community groups such as SaYiT - who provide practical support to LGBTQ+ young people, Under the Stars - a performing arts charity for people with learning

disabilities and Sheffield Children in Care Council - an organisation that is made up of young people who have been brought up through the care system.

The comments throughout the video portray the range of work that The Leadmill carries out with local communities, organisations and individuals - relationships that have been forged and nurtured over its 42 years of operation. It is these pivotal connections that have contributed towards its status as a historical landmark within Sheffield, whilst maintaining itself as an accessible, friendly and safe space.

The Leadmill have received an overwhelming volume of

supportive messages from the public who are shocked by the news that The Leadmill will cease to exist as its Landlords have served the business with an eviction notice.

Miles Kane, renowned songwriter and frequent collaborator of Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, can be heard stating ‘it’s a landmark for the City and so much great youth comes through it and new young talent that’s inspiring. I’ve been playing here for 15 years and I want to play here for another 15 years.’

Jarvis Cocker recently performed alongside Richard Hawley on the second night of a four-day residency in support of the

venue’s campaign. Cocker proclaimed The Leadmill to be “more than this building and this stage, it’s something that’s grown over years and it’s a feeling. It’s like a form of magic.” He went on to send a message to The Leadmill landlords, stating that “they may own the bricks & mortar, but they don’t own the spirit of The Leadmill” and to “have some respect for a beautiful thing.”

Head of Programming for The Leadmill Rose Wilcox has said, ‘it has been incredible to have such a large volume of support from people across the world. You really get a sense of just how much this venue means to people, for so many different reasons.

countless emotions and it is quite literally just a handful of the stories that we’ve heard.

dream team for trees new bus task force Technical and Administration Officer Lisa Frankish, and Senior Project Officer Alex Evans have joined forces with Matt North, Programme Manager, thanks to funding from the Trees Call to Action Fund. The team will be supporting landowners to plant the right woods in the right places, by helping with design, permissions and applying for grants to help with the costs of the work and aftercare. Communities can get involved with local training, education and volunteering opportunities.

Lisa explains: “Most people are now aware that we are in a climate emergency and biodiversity crisis so want to do something about it if they can. The Woodland Partnership project offers support in South Yorkshire by advising landowners how best to achieve the woodland that they want, be that for increasing biodiversity, more cover for stock, additional income or just to use a spare piece of land! It’s great to be able to signpost people for support with their ideas, when they may not know where to start on their own. For me, the knowledge that I am helping to make a difference to our planet is incredibly fulfilling. ” Alex says her role is complicated but rewarding: “My job is to help private landowners create new woodlands.

You need to consider the regulations that have to be complied with, site constraints, and design, which includes choosing species for the site that will do well now and in any future climate we may be living in. I can also support applications for grants to help pay for them.

In the UK woodlands have, until recently, been planted mainly for timber production.

We now recognise the need for a shift to woodland creation for multiple objectives, for example carbon storage to habitat restoration and wider environmental concerns, including improved soil, water and air quality. I hope that by helping landowners plant and establish new woodlands, we will see the wider benefits for other people and wildlife.

Who doesn’t love to walk through a woodland and take in the many sensory experiences and the magical changes throughout the seasons?”

Mayor Oliver Coppard has brought in a task force to put communities at the centre of plans to fix South Yorkshire’s broken bus system.

Spearheaded by independent bus champion Dawn Badminton-Capps, of Bus Users UK, the experienced forum of community, campaign and business representatives will stand alongside South Yorkshire’s Mayor to put passengers first; working to create legally binding promises and performance checks that hold bus companies and government to account.

Mayor Coppard, said: “When I took office as South Yorkshire’s Mayor I made fixing our buses a priority, not just for me but the thousands of people let down every day by our broken bus system.

Because for far too long our buses have been unaffordable, unreliable, and now – in the face of sweeping service cuts inaccessible for far too many across our region. I am doing everything I can with the limited powers and money that I have available to protect our services, on behalf of our communities - but it is not enough and I find that hugely frustrating.

It is clear we need a fundamental change to how the whole system works; because our buses are no longer working for South Yorkshire. That’s why I have brought in a bus champion and task force of bus users, business representatives and interest groups with the common goal of putting passengers at the heart of building a better future for the services we use and that so many of us rely on. This group will play a fundamental role in representing our communities and helping to create a formal customer promise, set in legislation, that will set out what we want and deserve from our network. We will stand together and

hold bus companies and government to account because we all agree that we cannot carry on with an unreliable, expensive, and polluting system that puts people off choosing travel choices that reduce traffic on our roads. I’m under no illusion, fixing our bus system will not be easy; it will take time, and we’ll need the government to deliver on their promise for significant funding to make it happen. But together we will take action to re-build a service from the bottom up and campaign for a joined up public transport network that is more like the one enjoyed by London; one that truly meets our regions’ needs, that is fit for purpose and delivers faster, smarter, greener bus journeys that South Yorkshire can be proud of.”

Bus forum Chair, Dawn Badminton-Capps, England Director at Bus Users UK, added: “Buses are the lifeblood of local communities. They have the potential to reduce congestion and pollution, boost the economy and provide access to life’s opportunities. We are putting passengers at the heart of decision making to make sure that bus services really deliver for the people of South Yorkshire.”

The bus task force will directly report into South Yorkshire’s legislative Enhanced Bus Partnership Board, to build on the foundations set in the making of the region’s Bus Service Improvement Plan and create a bus system for South Yorkshire based on local need.

The inaugural task force meeting focused on the creation of a formal customer charter that puts passengers first and holds transport authorities and bus companies to account to deliver a better service.

The next South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Enhanced Partnership Board meeting took place on Tuesday 4 October.

The Sheffield Volunteering Fair is back, on Tuesday 18th October from 11am - 3pm at The Atrium, Owen Building, Sheffield Hallam University City Campus, Howard Street, S1 1WB. The Volunteering Fair is a fantastic way for people to chat to a range of charities about their volunteer opportunities and to explore different volunteer roles in the city.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse Due to Close Its Doors

After 23 years of trading Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse DOVR NQRZQ DV 6:$* ˋUVW started out in 2000, in a tiny store on Attercliffe Road, across the road from the Banners building, selling a range of items from TVs to exercise equipment, toys to pots and pans. The shop was an immediate success and within a couple of years gave 'DYLG WKH FRQˋGHQFH WR PRYH to bigger premises in the old Co-Op building on The Moor behind Redgates. The business traded here happily and successfully for several years until the council decided the building was required for other purposes.

In 2006 the company moved again to the old Doors and Floors Galore warehouse on Attercliffe Road and traded for around a year before the SUHPLVHV ZHUH ˌRRGHG LQ WKH ˌRRGV 7KLV SURPSWHG the business to relocate, this time to a much larger location on Coleford Road in Darnall, where they are currently based. These premises are 50

times bigger than the original store and focusses solely on selling furniture. This also saw the business change names to Furniture Clearance Warehouse. Although all these years later, customers still refer to them as SWAG. The business predominantly sells living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. Selling end of line, over stocks and exdisplay from the big multiple furniture stores. There is something to suit every budget.

The owner, David has decided after working long hours and weekends for the last 23 years to start a new chapter. With no one to take over the reins of the business, it will begin

a closing down sale starting Monday 19th September. This is by no means a business that is going bust, merely an owner who wants to dust of his passport and get to know his family in the daylight hours.

The sale will continue into the new year until all stock has gone. During this time all customers will receive their furniture and all orders will be IXOˋOOHG The owner is grateful for all the support and custom over the years and is looking forward to the next chapter.

Mark loses 8st and has found a new life A super slimmer from Rotherham has changed his life after losing an incredible 8st.

Since joining his Slimming World group, Mark Marsden has lost this weight proving that Slimming World works just as well for men as for women.

Like many men, Mark initially thought that slimming clubs were aimed at women and assumed the focus would be on ‘diet’ food.

However, he decided to give it a try after he was finding normal day to day tasks and struggling to find clothes that fit.

Mark was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical and encouraging. He also found that Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, based on the science of satiety and energy density, meant that he never felt hungry or like he was on a diet.

He says: “Deep down I’d been unhappy with my weight for some time but it took me a long time to face up to it. And then when I did admit to myself that I wanted to lose weight I still didn’t want to ask for help. I’ve realised now though that far from being weak, admitting that you need help takes strength of character and getting support to identify where I’m going wrong and to make changes has given me a sense of confidence that is benefitting every aspect of my life.

“It was nerve-wracking walking through those doors for the first time but I wasn’t the only man there and everyone was warm and welcoming because we’re all at the group for

the same reason – to lose weight and feel good.”

Since Covid-19 restrictions have lifted real-life Slimming World groups have been able to re-open. Mark says the support and encouragement he’s continued to receive in his Slimming World group has helped him stay on track with his weight loss.

“It’s listening to others and talking about my own motivations and challenges that has, week by week, helped me to understand myself as a slimmer better and learn to plan, so I can make changes that I’m confident I can keep up for life. I always come away feeling just as inspired and motivated to keep going each week, and love sharing new recipes and ideas with my friends in the group. I don’t think I could have achieved all I have without the support of my Consultant Caroline and the rest of the Brinsworth group.

“One thing I’ve always loved about the Food Optimising plan is just how flexible and generous it is. I love the variety of foods I can still enjoy such as steak and homemade chips, chicken curry or a roast dinner. The freedom of the plan means I never have to miss out and nothing is off limits – I can still enjoy a pint of beer! I love that I don’t have to worry about weighing and measuring everything I eat or counting calories either.

Before I started, I worried eating healthily might limit me but I try more new recipes now than I ever did before and have found Food Optimising fits around my life, rather

than the other way around.

As the weight came off, Mark found he had more energy and so he was eager to use it: “I always thought that physical activity would be the best way to lose weight, but when I was at my heaviest I just wasn’t fit enough to do it and I’ve since realised that I needed to do more than just move more.

“However, Slimming World’s Body Magic activity programme has helped me to become more active, and by breaking it down into chunks and starting small I’ve managed to build up my activity gradually.

Mark says ‘I now love being able to play football with the kids which I was unable to do before losing weight. I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight.”

Now Mark feels much healthier, has a lot more energy, and his back no longer hurts.

Caroline who runs the Brinsworth Slimming World group says she’s incredibly proud of Mark: “He has done brilliantly and we’re all in awe of his transformation. He’s achieved what he set out to do – to become healthier and happier. And while so much has changed over the last year, his determination and motivation has never faded – he’s a real inspiration to the whole group. I couldn’t be prouder of everything Mark’s achieved!”

Tramlines partner with Water Bear to bring new opportunities for students in Sheffield Partnership with new music college will provide work experience in several areas of the festival including marketing, festival preparation, stage management and performance opportunities.

Tramlines 2023 will take place from 21 - 23rd July and follows a sold out event in 2022 with Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness entertaining 35,000 people per day at Hillsborough Park. In keeping with the stated aims of Tramlines in the Community, the festival has partnered with WaterBear, a new Sheffield music college currently being developed on the site of the famous Gatecrasher Nightclub.

Students at the new college will gain work opportunities with the festival with placements spanning festival preparation, stage management and marketing. Alongside the work placements, students will also get the chance to perform at Tramlines through the festivals ‘Apply to Play’ scheme. This follows partnerships with various local organisations in 2022 including stage programming from alternative independent event space, DINA, BBC Introducing and Pattern + Push.

For WaterBear students, it’s a valuable route into the industry — a real world experience of working in an internationally-renowned music festival, and for Tramlines, it introduces us to the next wave of talent coming through the ranks. UNITED SLIP TO FIRST AWAY LOSS Bannan impact, dominant display United slipped to a first away loss since the opening day of the campaign, as Stoke City ran out victors at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Rhian Brewster cancelled out Ben Wilmot’s early opener, only for Phil Jagielka to score on the stroke of half-time to put the hosts back in front. United chased an equaliser in the second half only for substitute Liam Delap to add a third in stoppage time.

Boss Heckingbottom was forced into several changes to the starting XI that face QPR in midweek. Brewster, Khadra, McAtee and Gordon all started, as Baldock, Berge and Bogle missed out through injury and McBurnie served a one-game ban for an accumulation of five bookings.

United were quickly out of the traps, but having combined with Khadra, McAtee couldn’t direct a right-footed effort on

target past the advancing Bursik. And in the fourth minute, Stoke hit the front with their first attack, after an initial corner wasn’t cleared.
