REGIONAL LEADERS MAKE NEW OFFER FOR FUTURE OF DONCASTER SHEFFIELD AIRPORT South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard, the Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) and Doncaster Council have found a credible consortium interested in operating Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA).

The consortium, which includes parties with extensive aviation experience, is part of a new offer to airport owners Peel Group.

Crucially Mayor Coppard

and the Mayor of Doncaster, have written to Peel Group, asking to commence a new process of several months which enables the parties to meaningfully undertake due diligence and continue negotiations.

The authorities are also offering to provide financial assistance to maintain jobs and support operations during the due diligence period.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Since Peel announced the review into DSA our biggest fear was that they were running down the clock while undermining confidence in the airport.

“So we launched our own search for potential operators and investors in the site, and we’ve found a strong and credible proposition which requires serious consideration. This is

no guarantee but it is a significant step forward.

“We promised to explore all options; we’ve worked tirelessly to find a group which meets the criteria set out by Peel Group.

It now falls to Peel to step up, and work with Doncaster Council and the consortium to find a solution that protects our region.”

Peel Group announced they were carrying out a 6-week review into the

viability of the airport in July. The review period was extended until 16th September.

Since then, the MCA and Doncaster Council have engaged in active negotiations with Peel Group and have drawn together task groups consisting of MPs, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and officials from the Department for Transport.

Sheffield in it to win it for Eurovision

After being shortlisted as one of 7 potential host cities for Eurovision 2023, Sheffield is one step closer and ‘in it to win it’ following approval of a strong bid by the Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee last week.

Sheffield was announced as a shortlisted host city on 12 August, after submitting a regional bid to host in solidarity with and on behalf of Ukraine in 2023.

Since then, the council has been working closely with members of the local Ukrainian community and partners across the region to bring together everything that makes Sheffield with South Yorkshire the perfect host for Eurovision.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield ticks all the boxes. We have great facilities, connectivity, diversity, vibrancy, but more importantly we bring warmth and unity with Ukraine firmly at the heart of this journey, and we’re in it to win it!

“As they are the rightful host nation, Ukrainian culture and communities are at the centre of our plans. We have a long-standing historical relationship and a growing Ukrainian population here in Sheffield and we’re extremely proud and humbled to have this opportunity on their behalf.

“Of course, there are challenges but every city in the running will face the same hurdles. What sets us apart is our pedigree and track record for delivering major international events, our vibrant nightlife and entertainment, our abundance of green space and opportunity for adventure, and of course as the UK’s first City of Sanctuary it’s our people and the welcome we give to those from all over the world.

“Sheffield is the perfect fit to celebrate and bring hope for Ukraine, mirror the inclusive values of Eurovision and put on the show of all shows.”

The Council’s Strategy and Resources committee heard the recommendations for Eurovision 2023 last

week and gave agreement for Sheffield’s compelling offer.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council and Chair of the Strategy and Resources Committee said: “This is a fantastic opportunity, like we’ve never had before, and though not without difficulty, the benefits for Sheffield and our Ukrainian communities are enormous. In what we know will be a year with some challenges, we have looked at this to make sure we do not put our city and services under unnecessary pressure.”

“We are wholeheartedly behind this bid, and our ability to show the world that Sheffield is the UK’s centre for culture and creativity. We’re ready to showcase our wonderful, welcoming city to the world, along with the beautiful and unique culture of our Ukrainian friends.”

Around 700 Ukrainians are now living in Sheffield, and more across the region. Local people have opened their arms and their lives to welcome and celebrate Ukrainians and their culture within South Yorkshire’s communities.

Sheffield’s Utilita Arena would be the hosting venue and Sheffield City Council is working in collaboration with Sheffield City Trust, SYMCA, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham councils to meet the necessary requirements and continue to demonstrate the region’s capability and aspiration to deliver this international event on behalf of the Ukrainian people.

A decision is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

STEVE HACKETT RETURNS WITH GENESIS REVISTED Steve Hackett returns to the UK with his Genesis Revisited - Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour which calls in at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 30th September.

The tour will mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock.

Hackett also releases Genesis Revisited Live: Seconds Out & More the live recording of his 31-date Sold Out 2021 Tour on 2nd September CD/ DVD, vinyl 25th November.the live recording of his 31date Sold Out 2021 Tour.

Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success

in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band’s profile.

“I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Steve Hackett. “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and became the first Genesis album to make the UK album charts.

The first track, the sci-fi influenced Watcher of the Skies became a fan favourite and perennial live set opener while Get ‘Em Out By Friday was a cutting slice of social comment about concrete tower blocks replacing aging slums, driven not by concern for communities but by the greed of developers.

Hackett was the lead writer of Can-Utility and the Coastliners, featuring some particularly strong musical ideas, and also contributed his classically inspired solo piece Horizons. “The original version was a rough mix but there was something about it. A rough monitor mix can have things that something more considered won’t necessarily possess. I liked the sound of the rough mix, so we went with that.”

The album’s highlight was the 23-minute epic Supper’s Ready which remains a concert favourite and featured on Hackett’s recent Second’s Out tour. “’Supper’s Ready’ was a sojourn, an odyssey and something that goes down very, very well with audiences now.” Hackett adds. “As part of ‘Second’s Out’ I’ve been playing the whole of that again, it really has stood the test of time.

“We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing ‘Foxtrot’, the band was becoming more ambitious. ‘Foxtrot’ is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn’t feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now.”

In the same week, online searches for the term ‘keep house warm’ exploded by 1,042% in the UK. With this in mind, experts reveal several hacks that can help to keep your house warm this autumn and winter. You will need a radiator bleed key and a towel to catch any water leakage. Below is a step by step guide for how to bleed a radiator: • Turn your central heating on • Feel along the surface of your radiators for any cold spots • Turn the central heating off and allow it to cool down (this will prevent hot water from burning you) • Choose the first radiator that you wish to bleed (particularly focusing on those with cold spots).

• Place your towel underneath the radiator and insert your radiator bleed key into the bleed valve (found at the top on the side) • Turn the key anticlockwise and listen out for a hissing sound • When the hissing draws to a close, turn the key back again • You’ll notice that water will drip from the radiator once the hissing stops this means that you’ve successfully released any trapped air • Bleed your other

Almost 60% of people in Yorkshire have not made their loved ones aware of all their final wishes, it’s been revealed.

Research by charity will-writing scheme, Will Aid, found 57% of adults have not discussed their wishes after death with their loved ones, or have only mentioned them briefly. The same data also showed 54% of people in Yorkshire have not yet made a will, meaning their estate would be distributed in accordance with the Rules of Intestacy, which may not reflect their true wishes.

Lauren Smith, Partner at Taylor Bracewell, a local law firm taking part in their 10th Will Aid campaign this year, said: “Discussing your wishes for after you pass away is a difficult conversation, but it is far too important to avoid. By ensuring your loved ones are aware of your requests, which you then detail in your will, it will make an incredibly difficult time that much easier for them. Not only that, but a watertight will is the only way to ensure your wishes are protected when you die.”

Will Aid month returns this November and members of the public can now see which firms are taking part and make an enquiry. The annual campaign involves solicitors waiving the fee for writing basic wills and instead invite clients to make a voluntary donation Will Aid’s nine partner charities. Suggested donations are £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills, representing great value for the public during these difficult times.

The Limb Brook NBs Demonstrator project is a partnership between the Environment Agency, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust. As part of the Upper Don Source to Sea programme, the works use a number of natural flood management methods used to help store and slow water flows, to reduce the risk of flooding at at-risk locations downstream in the Don, as well as supporting wildlife.

Features like the sports pitches on Whirlow Fields, are usually artificially drained with the rapid run-off of water passed to nearby watercourses (here, the Limb Brook, a tributary of the Sheaf, in turn a tributary of the River Don). In periods of high rainfall, this can add to existing high flows which can cause flooding downstream.

Nowadays proposals for new pitches are required to slow the flow - this project has sought to do this retrospectively

This more natural drainage causes slower movement of rainwater once it hits the ground, as it moves through long vegetation and snakes around bends. In addition, the ponds act to temporarily hold of water during storm events. Bringing water to the surface and out of its pipes can create a new dynamic and biodiverse landscape.

These features along with wildflower, meadow and hedge planting will also support a range of wildlife including birds, insects and amphibians, as well as creating resilience to the climate and ecological emergencies. The change is being monitored onsite via a large citizen science component involving the local community, and in the river with specialist hydrology equipment. Even in these early stages, with not all ponds yet in place and some bare areas where vegetation has not yet fully colonised, the scheme is already working. Water is flowing

through the swales constantly; and during a recent extreme rainfall event, the ponds held a significant amount of water, slowly releasing it into the swale systems, which directed the flow into the bund at the bottom of the field where it dissipated into the woodland. Ongoing works have seen similar interventions along the course of the Limb Brook and its catchment area; from Lady Canning’s Plantation down through the Limb Valley to Ecclesall Woods.

Leo Ingvorsen, Nature Recovery Manager said: “With all the dry weather recently it is hard to think about heavy rain, however, we know we are more likely to face extreme weather. This work on Whirlow allows us to capture more water during extremes whilst holding some water for wildlife makes the site, and city, more resilient against flooding, and resilient for wildlife.

Due to the pond control design we can choose if we want to capture water for a common flood event (like heavy rain each year) or severe event (that may only happen once every 30 years). It’s a clever way to future proof Rotherham, Sheffield and other communities downstream, while providing a wildlife-rich landscape for everyone to enjoy.”

Sheffield hosts major Parkinson’s UK event

Thanks to a generous legacy, the Sheffield branch of Parkinson’s UK has been able to organise an informative, social and networking event.

People from all over South Yorkshire are being invited to an enlightening event, organised by the local volunteers from Parkinson’s UK, partnering with Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC).

The drop-in event takes place on Saturday, October 8, between 11am and 4pm, at the AWRC in Attercliffe (S9 3TY).

The day’s programme is aimed not only for people living with Parkinson’s, but also for their friends and family, and anyone with a professional interest in the field. That could include staff from care homes, health and social work professionals, exercise and activity providers or more.

What’s on offer is an informative and free event, with plenty to do whether you have Parkinson’s or not. The discussions include sessions about medication, exercise, diet and staying well. There will be a chance for fitness testing, for you to try out different styles of exercise of benefit to people with Parkinson’s, and your chance to offer up suggestions for future topics at regular monthly events.

Volunteers are also working with researchers at Sheffield Hallam

University and the University of Sheffield to offer special insights to anyone with an interest.

While the event has been organised by the Sheffield Branch, they’ve chosen a location easy to access from the city, plus Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and beyond, and are hoping for a good turn out to this free event.

Bhanu, one of the committee organisers says: “It’s a welcome return to in-person meetings, after two years of lockdown zoom meetings, capturing ideas suggested by informed and engaged peer members with Parkinson’s at past events.”

Pamela Goff, branch chair, said: “I am thrilled to welcome everyone in South Yorkshire who is interested in, or affected by Parkinson’s. This event has been made possible by a legacy from a generous Sheffield family.

“We have all spent the last two years in exceptional circumstances – making the best of our lives, given the restrictions of the pandemic. Research shows that life improves when we socialise – and this is more important for those who have been diagnosed with the condition.

“This event is a celebration of freedom and independence that we all strive for and previously took for

granted. Parkinson’s is a complex condition – no two people have the same experience of living with it.

This event will demonstrate different ways in which we can manage our own lives. Whether you have been recently diagnosed - feeling alone and shellshocked or you have lived with Parkinson’s for a while, I am sure you will discover something that will interest you during the event.”

Personal experience Nicky Banyard is living with Parkinson’s, and moved to Sheffield in 2019. She said: “I’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease four years earlier. Being a progressive disease, I have needed to tackle ongoing changes in my condition as they crop up.

“On my first hospital appointment

at the Hallamshire, the Parkinson’s Nurse told me about the local Parkinson’s group. From then onwards, everything is history!

“I joined their weekly keep fit class.

This was initially via zoom (followed by a short quiz). I was able to meet my fellow class members for the first time a year ago when face to face classes resumed.

“My husband and I also joined the monthly Parkinson’s family walking group, which provides the opportunity of networking with others, as well as a spot of regular exercise.”

She added: “Furthermore, I signed up to become a volunteer on the Sheffield Parkinson’s Committee. I was quite surprised when I was nominated for and won a Volunteer

Award last year! The special event on the 8th October will be a great opportunity for learning, assessing fitness, and networking to help maintain good health for others like me.”

Behind Michelle’s back, Bob embarks on an affair with both Rita and Sue, who take it in turns with him in his car in the countryside. It is only a matter of time before Michelle and Sue’s parents find out and when they do sparks most definitely fly! Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical work is a funny, touching and vibrant play, full of wicked humour and is a stark snapshot of 1980s northern working-class life, under an increasingly repressive Tory government. In 1986, the play was adapted into a film of the same name, and attracted a cult following due to its intimate portrayal of ordinary people’s lives.

Gary McSheffrey pledged that there will be plenty of hard work from his squad and staff in order to arrest the recent downturn in form for Rovers.

The defeat to Swindon Town on Saturday was the third consecutive loss in Sky Bet League Two and McSheffrey is determined to return to the good run of results which saw his side start the season so strongly.

On how the game played out: “I think they moved the ball quite well and physically looked better than us. They had better ball carriers than us.

“We created a couple of half chances but didn’t deserve much out of the game.

“It’d have been nice to

grind out a draw and stop the rot but it didn’t happen.

“They deserved the win.”

On the approach to the game: “It was about trying to win the individual battles and be on the front foot.

“We know they like to play out regardless so could we affect it with a high press early on.

“They’re good players that can deal with the football. Sometimes they’re going to play through you and sometimes you’ve got to sit off a little bit. If they’re not hurting you, it’s not really a problem.

“Go out there and play with some personality and less fear to what we’ve seen recently.

“I think they worked hard and you can’t fault the

work ethic.

“But was there a real desire to be the matchwinner or get involved in the game.

There was a few lacking that.”

On recent performances: “I don’t think they’re going through the motions. A month ago we looked like a team with such desire and structure to go to the end. Two and a half weeks later we look like a team lacking energy.

“I think it’s sometimes the fear of failure creeping in.

You lose one, then two on the spin and then it’s three. There’s no easy way out of it. You’re not just going to click your fingers and be out of it.

“You have to work through it and be brave.

That will be the message.

“We’ll keep working hard and trying to get the best out of them.

“We’ll not just scrutinise and hammer them. That’s not how we do things.

“We’ll pick the bones out of it and try to improve the players. But a lot of it needs to come from within as well.”

On recent results taking the shine off the strong start to the season: “You can’t live in the past. You’re only as good as your last game and the next one is the most important in your career, whether you’re a player or manager.

“We don’t dwell on that.

We took good energy from some courageous performances.
