Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022

As we have enter a period of mourning following the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the councils of our region have published details as to how people can express their condolences.

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sioned-Mair Richards has issued a statement on the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

“On behalf of the City Council and the people of Sheffield I want to express our great sadness at the news of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

“Our sincere condolences go to members of the Royal Family at this time of sadness and personal loss.

“Her reign will be acknowledged in history as one of the greatest of all monarchs and, through years of major challenges and difficulties for the country, she retained a true sense of dignity throughout.

“As a mark of our respect, flags

will be flown at half-mast on civic buildings. A Book of Condolence is now open in Sheffield Town Hall and will continue to be open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, until the day after the funeral.

"Floral tributes may be laid in a specially designated area of the Peace Gardens in the city centre.”

Residents of Doncaster and visitors are welcome to sign the Book of Condolence in tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II which is available at the Doncaster Gallery, Library and Museum (DGLAM).

The book is available to sign at DGLAM from 9am - 6pm until the day after the funeral which takes place on Monday 19th September.

People in Doncaster are also welcome to leave floral tributes in the raised grass beds in Sir Nigel Gresley Square which is a short walk away from DGLAM. Any floral tributes which are left

In Rotherham Official Books of Condolence are now open to the general public at Rotherham Town Hall, Riverside House and Rotherham Minster. Opening times are as follows: Rotherham Town Hall, Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.30pm; Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Riverside House, Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm.

Rotherham Minster, Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm; Saturday 9am to 2pm; Sunday 9.30am to 1pm.

Members of the public may lay flowers at the Rotherham Minster, if they wish. If at all possible the council have asked that people remove plastic to aid with the eventual environmentally-friendly removal. Flowers laid at other locations in the Town Centre will be transferred to the Minster overnight.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse Due to Close Its Doors

After 23 years of trading Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

Furniture Clearance Warehouse DOVR NQRZQ DV 6:$* ˋUVW started out in 2000, in a tiny store on Attercliffe Road, across the road from the Banners building, selling a range of items from TVs to exercise equipment, toys to pots and pans. The shop was an immediate success and within a couple of years gave 'DYLG WKH FRQˋGHQFH WR PRYH to bigger premises in the old Co-Op building on The Moor behind Redgates. The business traded here happily and successfully for several years until the council decided the building was required for other purposes.

In 2006 the company moved again to the old Doors and Floors Galore warehouse on Attercliffe Road and traded for around a year before the SUHPLVHV ZHUH ˌRRGHG LQ WKH ˌRRGV 7KLV SURPSWHG the business to relocate, this time to a much larger location on Coleford Road in Darnall, where they are currently based. These premises are 50

times bigger than the original store and focusses solely on selling furniture. This also saw the business change names to Furniture Clearance Warehouse. Although all these years later, customers still refer to them as SWAG. The business predominantly sells living room, dining room and bedroom furniture. Selling end of line, over stocks and exdisplay from the big multiple furniture stores. There is something to suit every budget.

The owner, David has decided after working long hours and weekends for the last 23 years to start a new chapter. With no one to take over the reins of the business, it will begin

a closing down sale starting Monday 19th September. This is by no means a business that is going bust, merely an owner who wants to dust of his passport and get to know his family in the daylight hours.

The sale will continue into the new year until all stock has gone. During this time all customers will receive their furniture and all orders will be IXOˋOOHG The owner is grateful for all the support and custom over the years and is looking forward to the next chapter.

A much-loved and highly respected public figure, Queen Elizabeth dedicated her life to public service and helping others, earning the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world. With these events likely impacting much of the British nation as the country goes into mourning, Winston’s Wish shares advice on how you can explain this to your children.

Children are inquisitive individuals and love to ask questions and really understand what is going on and for some children this may be the first time they hear the words ‘death’ or ‘died’.

They may hear things on the radio and television, in schools or across their social media channels which could prompt a lot of questions and curiosity from children, wanting to know what it all means.

Unfortunately, for some children they will have already experienced a bereavement and this significant event could bring up their own difficult feelings.

Winston’s Wish share some useful tips on how to explain Queen Elizabeth’s death to a child or young person.

Use clear, ageappropriate language Although it’s tempting to use terms like ‘gone to sleep’, ‘passed away’ or ‘lost’, this can be confusing to children who often take things literally.

If she’s gone to sleep, why can’t we wake her up? If she’s lost, why can’t we find her? Although they feel harsh and blunt, and as adults we can shy away from them, using words like ‘dead’, ‘died’ and ‘death’ helps to create a clear definition

for children.

Explain what death is using concepts they understand This could be a child’s first experience of death and, if they are younger, they might not fully understand the concept of death. This can be confusing and frightening for them. This is a clear way to explain death: When someone dies, their body has stopped working and they can’t be brought back to life.

They are no longer able to do the things they could when they were alive, such as move or talk. When someone dies, their heart stops beating, they stop breathing, their brain stops thinking.

Sometimes it helps to start by talking about the concept of being alive.

You can also use examples in nature to explain death to a child, such as the difference between an insect which is alive and one which is dead.

Reassure your child Hearing about The Queen’s death might make children worried about people around them dying. If you can, offer them reassurance but without making impossible promises.

Saying things like “we are healthy and we’re going to do all we can to keep that way because I want to do X in the future” Or if someone is seriously ill, you can still offer reassurance but being honest is important. An explanation such as “you know Dad is very ill at the moment and has an illness called X. The doctors are giving Dad special medicine and working very hard to make him better.”

Be honest It’s better to be open, honest and direct when someone has died. Without clear information children tend to fill the gaps to try and make sense of what is happening.

online, overhearing conversations and playground talk. This can mean that children imagine all sorts of things about a death, which are often worse than the reality.

Encourage questions and honest answers A child may have a lot of questions about The Queen’s death, or it may prompt questions about death in general. It could be all at once or they may come back to you several hours or days later. Try to answer them honestly and if you don’t know the answer, let them know you will try to find out for them. By reassuring them that questions are ok, and you’ll do your best to answer it, they are learning to trust the responses you give.

Let them know their feelings are normal Let the child know that their feelings - anger, sadness, guilt, worry, confusion and more - are all normal reactions to hearing that someone has died. They may not feel upset as they didn’t really have a connection to The Queen, and that’s ok. However, if they do feel upset, it’s important not to also honour their reaction and sadness, and allow them to explore their feelings.

Don’t be fearful of showing your own emotions Children will look to adults around them to make sense of grief and try to understand how should react. It’s ok to explore feelings with children and give them permission to explore their feelings with you.

For example, if they see you upset you could say ‘I’m sad because I am sad that The Queen has died’ or ‘I’m crying because The Queen’s death has made me think about when your Granny died’.

After being shortlisted as one of 7 potential host cities for Eurovision 2023, Sheffield is one step closer and ‘in it to win it’ following approval of a strong bid by the Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee yesterday.

Sheffield was announced as a shortlisted host city on 12 August, after submitting a regional bid to host in solidarity with and on behalf of Ukraine in 2023. Since then, the council has been working closely with members of the local Ukrainian community and partners across the region to bring together everything that makes Sheffield with South Yorkshire the perfect host for Eurovision.

If you have existing back pain, you might be getting less sleep because you are being woken by the pain, and the lack of sleep can also contribute to back pain because your body does not have enough time to restore its tissues while you sleep. A recent study found living with chronic pain can cost a person 42 minutes of sleep and

acute pain episodes can cost 14 minutes of sleep. Everyone’s body is different, and some positions may be better for you based on your height, weight, or previous injuries, but back sleeping is the most recommended position for those with back pain.

What are the worst sleeping positions for lower back pain?

The great majority of people do not sleep on their backs – 74% of people are side sleepers and only 16% of people are stomach sleepers.

Sleeping on your stomach is one of the worst positions for back pain, as it puts unnatural pressure on your spine. It forces your neck to rotate to either the right or left side and this position can compromise the flow of blood, lymph, and spinal fluid and may cause joint pain. If you struggle to sleep on your back, side sleeping or sleeping in the fetal position is preferable to stomach sleeping. Side sleepers who cannot make the change to back sleeping are encouraged to use a pillow between their knees which aligns the hip flexors and neutralize the spine. Snorers should also sleep on their side, as back sleeping can make snoring worse.

Darts Superstars come to Magna ZH Live presents Showdown Darts on 13th October at Magna Science Centre- a night of unforgettable darting entertainment with the hottest stars in the darts world taking to the stage.

Headlining the night is former world champion and current number one darts player in the world Gerwyn “The Iceman” Price is joined by the double world champion Gary “The Flying Scotsman” Anderson, one of the greatest players to ever pick up a dart.

England’s fromer UK Open Champion Nathan “The Asp” Aspinall, rising star Ryan “Heavy Metal” Searle, professional darts player & YouTuber Matthew Edgar, and Spanish ace Toni Alcinas also feature alongside a special appearance by the two-time world champion Dennis “The Menace” Priestley, who will be available for photographs and chats throughout the night.

The main event is starting at 19:30, with doors opening at 17:30 for VIP & Hospitality guests, who will have the exclusive chance to get to meet the stars of darts in attendance at the Magna, general access starts at 18:25.

JOHN REILLY AND FRIENDS CELEBRATE A CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 10 years ago, singer songwriter John Reilly and Musical Director Lewis Nitikman played their first ever ‘Christmas Festival of Music’ concert at Sheffield Cathedral to an audience of around 200. Since then, it has become an iconic Sheffield tradition playing for 2 or 3 nights to audiences in excess of 800 but to celebrate this special 10th Anniversary year, we are raising the bar even higher!

Stannington Brass Band Award winning, Sheffield based Stannington Brass Band, is conducted by Musical Director Derek Renshaw. Proud of its roots, the band plays at local events, parades and concerts and at Christmas time has a strong following of singers and supporters at carol events in pubs and churches.

Janine Dyer and Sheffield Community Choir The Choir was formed by Janine Dyer the choir’s Director. Janine is a gospel singer who discovered her gift at an early age and gained experience through singing in her Pentecostal church. SCC have sung at many events in and around Sheffield and surrounding areas. People often comment on “how uplifted and blessed they feel after hearing them sing.

Gareth Lloyd Gareth is currently working as a freelance operatic tenor, private singing teacher and musical director for Easy Street Theatre Company. He regularly performs in special events and has recently been seen

singing ‘Nessun Dorma’ as part of Sheffield’s BBC Music Day celebrations and as a featured soloist at The Sheffield City Hall where he performed as part of ‘An Evening with Paul Gascoigne’.

Emily Robinson Emily Robinson is a classical soprano soloist who has performed in concerts, recitals and shows across the country. She also enjoys singing with Encore.

HECKY BAGS AWARD Paul Heckingbottom has been named Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for August.

The Blades boss has won the opening award of the campaign ahead of Watford’s Rob Edwards, Norwich City head coach Dean Smith and Paul Ince of Reading.
