Sheffield’s big adventure Bank Holiday Cliffhanger and Sheffield Fayre return to the city this August Bank Holiday weekend transforming Sheffield in to one big playground with three days of free fun activities and entertainment for all the family.

Sheffield’s festival dedicated to celebrating the great outdoors – Cliffhanger - is back in the city centre on Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 August, with the exciting British Bouldering Championships once again taking centre stage. The nation’s best climbers will battle it out on the wall for the top spot, while spectators watch in awe.

Then on Monday 29 August, the popular Sheffield Fayre will transform Norfolk Heritage Park into a spectacular fairground of fun and transport us back in time celebrating the heritage of the park and displaying a range of vintage and historical stalls and activities.

It is also the final weekend of Sheffield By The Seaside – the inner-city beach that transforms the Peace Gardens into our very own seaside, complete with Helter Skelter, seaside rides, live entertainment, character visitors, sandy areas for digging and sandcastle building plus a splash in the fountains.

Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield has certainly put on a great show so far this summer and the coming bank holiday is another fantastic opportunity for local people and families to get out and enjoy the brilliant free activities and entertainment we’re putting on.

“There are not many cities where on the same weekend you can watch live national championship sport for free, have a go at axe hurling, make sandcastles and whizz down a Helter Skelter all

in the city centre; and then get up close to vintage emergency services vehicles, watch owls and birds of prey in flight and see live circus acts while picnicking in a beautiful park.

“Sheffield is a massive adventure playground and whether you’re a fan of sport, the outdoors, arts and craft, the seaside, or rides and shows there’s a lot of fun to be had this bank holiday.”

rides and activities taking place across the city centre as part of Sheffield By the Seaside.

Council progresses plans for Event Central on Fargate

Plans to create a vibrant cultural community hub on Fargate are progressing, with the Council seeking an operator to run the space.

Event Central is a regeneration project commissioned by Sheffield City Council and funded through the Future High Streets Fund, which will see the refurbishment of the existing building at 20-26 on Fargate.

The Council is seeking an operator committed to successfully developing and managing Event Central, as well as taking a lead on the regeneration of the wider Fargate area. The chosen occupier must also understand and advocate sustainability – a key component of this low impact space.

Event Central will showcase Sheffield’s diverse talent with artistic events and opportunities for exhibitions, workshops and talks to be hosted in one space. It will also feature co-working spaces, a café/ juice bar and a 200-capacity standing music venue.

The development will see the creation of a flexible space for a year-round programme of major international events in Sheffield, expected to attract more than 110,000 visitors a year.

As part of the wider Future High Streets Fund project, pocket parks will be introduced through Fargate, using the design skills and knowledge gained through the Grey to Green scheme.

Sheffield City Council’s bid for the Future High Streets Fund has been supported by the University of Sheffield. These inputs included elements of the written bid as well as 3D modelled visuals of the proposals for Fargate and Event Central, developed by Architectural and Urban

Planning students. The University has also coordinated and hosted a series of consultation events for cultural stakeholders.

Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said: “Event Central promises to be an incredible and welcomed addition to Fargate. We have a rich artistic heritage in Sheffield and it will be fantastic to see this celebrated all under one roof.

“As we drive forward with our commitment to achieve net zero carbon by 2030, it is more important than ever to have the climate as a top priority, and so we’re seeking an operator which is focussed on sustainability in operation. With that, they must also share our passion and vision for Fargate and the city centre as a whole – highlighting the great city Sheffield is and unlocking even more of its potential.”

High Street Fund Stakeholder Panel, said: “This is an exciting time for the reinvention of Fargate and the University is delighted that the vision we helped to create with Sheffield City Council is coming to fruition.

“Event Central is designed to have a strong community element, benefit the people of Sheffield as well as showcase our wonderful creative artists. It is destined to be a culturally vibrant addition to our city centre and I am confident that Sheffield will be proud of it.”

Interested parties will need to submit an expression of interest by noon on October 19. Once submitted, the Council will shortlist a number of operators, asking the for more detailed proposals before deciding on an appropriate operator.

Upcoming hosepipe ban what do you need to know?

Due to experiencing one of the hottest and driest summers in a while, Yorkshire Water are enforcing a hosepipe ban for the region to assist with saving water and to increase the reservoir’s water levels.

The hosepipe ban will come into force on Friday 26 August as temperatures during August and September are still set to be higher than average.

The ban affects anyone who is a Yorkshire Water customer, you can check your postcode on their website here- www. yorkshirewater.com/your-water/is-therea-hosepipe-ban/.

The ban prohibits people from: • Watering a garden using a hosepipe • Cleaning a private motor-vehicle using a hosepipe • Watering plants on domestic or other non-commercial premises using a hosepipe • Cleaning a private leisure boat using a hosepipe • Filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool using a hosepipe • Drawing water, using a hosepipe, for domestic recreational use • Filling or maintaining a domestic pond using a hosepipe

• Filling or maintaining an ornamental fountain • Cleaning walls, or windows, of domestic premises using a hosepipe • Cleaning paths or patios using a hosepipe • Cleaning other artificial outdoor surfaces using a hosepipe Yorkshire Water has the power to implement a temporary use ban under the Water Industry Act 1991 (Section 76) as amended by the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

Abbeydale Brewery’s Fresh Start!

CHEERS! South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout is raising a very special glass to the city’s Abbeydale Brewery.

For the Abbeydale team have created a new beer to celebrate the start of a year of support for Roundabout’s work across the region.

Fresh Start is a 4.1 per cent dry hopped pale ale created with a blend of Enigma, Simcoe and Vic Secret hops.

The name Fresh Start was put forward by the Roundabout team and is reflective of the ethos of the charity and the difference they make to the lives of young people in South Yorkshire.

The beer is now available and is being released in cask only, with 10p from every pint sold

going to Roundabout.

Consistent lack of sleep can become a threat to our mental and physical health if not addressed. Sleep expert, Jasmin Lee reveals the signs that you may be suffering from sleep deprivation and the ways you can combat it.

What are the signs that I’m sleep deprived?

1. Craving a takeaway If you’re getting sudden urges to indulge in a takeaway or junkfood, it can be a symptom of sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep alters appetiteregulating hormones as well as metabolism and brain function.

2. Poor memory Sleep deprivation affects the brain’s ability to learn and recall information.

During REM sleep, the brain is active, processing information and storing memories from the previous day. Less sleep disrupts this process because the body spends less time in this REM cycle. The following day you may have trouble recalling what was said in a business meeting or what assignments you have. Sleep deprivation also makes it harder for the brain to absorb new information, as the brain is working hard to focus and take in information.

3. Weight gain Less sleep triggers changes in hormone levels that regulate your hunger. Leptin lets the body know when it’s full, while ghrelin signals hunger. Little sleep produces less leptin and more ghrelin—you’ll feel hungrier, but your body will be slower to react when you’re full. You end up eating more than you need to.

4. Poor decision making Studies show that sleep loss is tied to making risky decisions. You become more impulsive and are less likely to consider loss, only focusing on the reward.

It can also be a problem

in everyday life. For example, if you’re an entrepreneur or own a company, you may make risky decisions hoping for a higher reward. Further, less sleep also means your brain is less aware of loss—you could make a high-risk decision, only focused on the reward and not fully considering the consequences if you lose.

5. Overheating Sleep is vital for our bodies to regulate our internal temperature.

Therefore, if you are feeling hot, it can be your body overheating due to a consistent lack of good quality sleep.

Does napping make up for lost sleep?

Napping for brief periods may boost your energy levels and improve your focus. Just make sure you’re smart about how you nap. Don’t sleep longer than 30 minutes— you want to avoid slipping into the REM cycle, which can cause sleep inertia. Also, avoid napping after 3 p.m. This could make it harder for you to fall asleep at night.

How can I achieve better sleep?

Practicing good sleep hygiene is the key to avoiding the effects of poor sleep. There a number of small things you can do in your routine that can better your sleep hygiene.

Establish a sleep schedule Setting a bedtime may seem childish, but in reality, it works. A set sleep and wake time makes it easier to fall asleep at night and wake in the morning. Your body will adjust to the rhythm, so when it’s time for bed, you may automatically start to feel sleepy. It’s just as important to maintain this schedule on the weekends too. Bodies respond positively to these consistent rhythms.

It may be tempting to sleep in for a few hours, but this can throw off your body. Plus, if you’re getting the right amount of sleep, you likely do not need that extra time.

There may be some truth to “eat dinner like a pauper” philosophy.

Avoiding heavy meals and snacking may improve your sleep.

Heavy meals take longer to digest. When it’s time for bed, your body may be focused on digesting, making it harder to fall asleep. The best time to eat dinner is between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., allowing your body time to digest your meal.

When you’re using any electronic device (TV, tablet, computer, or smartphone), you’re exposing yourself to blue light. Blue light tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, halting the melatonin production and making it harder to fall asleep. Try to avoid any electronic devices for an hour or two before bed. If you need to scroll through your phone, use your night settings or the apps that filter out blue light.

Sheffield Tree Fayre, a family-friendly event celebrating the wonder of trees and woodlands, will take over Sheffield Botanical Gardens on Saturday 10 September.

Running from 10am to 4pm, this free entry, oneday tree-fest will feature a variety of children’s outdoor forest school activities, indoor crafts, wood craft stalls and guided tree walks. There is also a fantastic line-up of tree-themed talks, which feature speakers from the National Trust, Regather Cooperative, local author of ‘The Politics of Street Trees’ book, Camilla Allen, and Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. Leonie Kapadia, Community Forestry Project Manager at Sheffield City Council, said: “There will be plenty of fun, practical, tree-related craft activities for all ages, as well as educational and informative tree walks and talks throughout the day. It’s also an opportunity for our team, who work with community groups and schools to plant trees across the city, to talk to local people about what we do. Our colleagues in the Tree team, who focus on caring for and managing our tree population, will also be there to chat to the public on issues such as Ash dieback and tree resilience to climate change.”

Members of the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership will also be at the event to speak to attendees about the progress being made as part of the Sheffield Street Tree Strategy. Sheffield City Council’s Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee Chair Cllr.

This event aims to bring together everyone in the city who is passionate about trees and how they make Sheffield a better place to live, work and play. People can also find out more about how they can get involved with community projects in their local area. With national organisations such as the Woodland Trust and the Arboricultural Association joining us too this will be a fantastic opportunity to learn, have a go at activities and for all of us to celebrate our city’s wonderful trees.”

Visitors can explore a variety of wood or treethemed stalls throughout the day, and food will be available from Woodfired pizza. All activities for the event will take place at the Thompson Road entrance side of the Sheffield Botanical Gardens S11 8RB. The event is hosted by Sheffield City Council Community Forestry Team, in partnership with The Woodland Trust, National Heritage Lottery funded Education and Engagement Project at Sheffield Botanical Gardens and the Sheffield Street Tree Partnership.

The event is also kindly supported by the Friends of Sheffield Botanical Gardens and Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust.

yorkshire water thanks Yorkshire Water has thanked customers for saving water, as demand dropped over the hot weekend.

The regional water company recently announced that it would introduce a hosepipe ban on 26 August. Customers have responded to the company’s ask to save water and on average, water usage was down over the weekend, when temperatures reached 30 degrees, compared to the previous spell of hot weather in July.

The heatwave in July saw water usage surge to 1.5billion litres a day, whereas last weekend’s peak was around 100 million litres lower than that at 1.4billion.

Yorkshire Water has also stepped its leakage activity up further, as it draws on resources from teams across the business to boost the number of leaks it can find and fix. The water company currently has more than 500 people tackling leaky pipes, in a bid to save as much water as possible.

Martyn Hattersley, head of demand management at Yorkshire Water, said: “This week the Environment Agency announced that Yorkshire is officially in a drought, and with parts of the

region seeing the lowest rainfall since our records began more than 130 years ago, our reservoirs are low, at below 50% full. Our customers understand the challenge we’re currently facing and whilst we’re increasing efforts to save as much water as possible from leaky pipes, our customers are doing their bit to save water at home too.

“A sincere thank you to our customers for using water wisely. By reducing the amount of water used, we can help to keep as much water in reservoirs as possible and protect the environment. As the ground is incredibly dry, we would need a few months of wet weather to help them return to their usual levels, so it’s really important that people keep taking steps to save water.”

Nominations for CAMRA’s Pub Saving Award are now open CAMRA is looking for the next winner of its prestigious Pub Saving Award, which recognises people who have come together to save a pub that would have otherwise been demolished or converted to another use.

The award aims to secure publicity for pub-saving campaigns and encourage others to get involved in saving their local. Last year, the Stoke Ferry Community Enterprise took the crown after rescuing the last pub in the village of Stoke Ferry in Norfolk – the Blue Bell Inn. Nominations open as CAMRA celebrates its “Summer of Pub” campaign, aimed to encourage pub-going and celebrate the first summer without restrictions. Pubs are encouraged to share events they may be running throughout the summer on CAMRA’s dedicated map at summerofpub.camra.org.uk Paul Ainsworth, Chair of CAMRA’s Pub Campaigns Group says: “Pubs continue to close at an alarming rate, facing rising prices, skyrocketing energy bills and a dip in consumer spending. However, those rates of closure would be much higher without the huge number of campaigners around the country who are willing to pull

out all the stops to save their local. “The Pub Saving Award aims to showcase the fantastic achievements of these community groups around the country and inspire others to fight to save their local pub from closure.”
