Restart funding for REGION’S businesses A new Restart and Recovery fund, which became available from Wednesday 2nd December, will help businesses who have been unable to trade conventionally during the Covid-19 lockdowns adapt using technology and other initiatives.

Businesses will be able to apply into the £1.1m Restart and Recovery support fund to implement more effective ways of working, trade online or employ initiatives to build customer confidence.

Applications for funding must be made for specific items such as homeworking aids, specialist software or sales platforms. The funding can also be used for businesses

to work with specialist consultants to provide professional advice or to gain accreditations to build customer confidence. The funding must cover the whole cost of the materials/service applied for.

Whilst the new scheme is open to most sectors, businesses who have been unable to benefit from the national government grants scheme are strongly encouraged to apply. This includes businesses operating from people’s homes, tourism and visitor economy sector businesses.

Grant payments will be awarded between £1,000 and £3,000 and no contribution from the business is required.

The money cannot be utilised for anything that is a legal requirement, such as being Covid-secure and ensuring social distancing.

On behalf of all South Yorkshire local authorities, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council are distributing the Restart and Recovery Fund to businesses in the region. Applications opened at 9am on Wednesday 2nd December.

News, Information and Advice Plans revealed to transform travel in the city centre Proposals to overhaul cycling, walking and public transport infrastructure in Sheffield have launched today as plans for a city centre scheme are shared for public consultation.

The proposals, which include the permanent pedestrianisation of Pinstone Street, are designed to make cycling and walking around the city centre easier, and to make bus journeys quicker and more direct.

Alongside new bus routes, there will be improvements to the street scene, such as more planting and greenery replicating the much acclaimed ‘’Grey to Green’ schemes, enhancing the city centre spaces that people can enjoy.

The project is funded by the Government’s Department for Transport’s £50m Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), as part of the Industrial Strategy, which was granted following a successful bid made

by Sheffield City Region. The funding is earmarked for schemes that improve walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure, with a view to making active travel and bus journeys a realistic option for more people.

The City Centre scheme is the first of a number of projects that will be funded by TCF and will sit under the Connecting Sheffield brand, which is Sheffield City Council’s vision for the future of travel. Connecting Sheffield has a focus on promoting sustainable travel choices that help to ease congestion, combat climate change, improve air quality, and keep people fit and healthy.

The plans must be implemented by March 2023 to meet government deadlines.

The city centre proposals include: • The pedestrianisation of Pinstone Street and Leopold Street, linking with the Peace Gardens and creating more space for people and events. Access to Cross Burgess Street retained though one-way road access, including to John Lewis car park.

• Bus gates in both directions on Furnival Gate, and along Arundel Gate to Norfolk Street to help ease congestion and allow buses priority into the centre • Pedestrianisation of Surrey Street with access maintained to Norfolk Street and Tudor Square. This will help create a new traffic-free Town Hall Square • Pedestrianisation of Charles Street between Union St and Pinstone St, with access maintained to Q car park. This area will be transformed into a public space where seating and planting will provide a useable, inviting public area for all to enjoy.

• A new bus hub on Rockingham Street with improvements to pavements, green street, pocket park and new bus stops Detailed plans can be found on the Connecting Sheffield website or hard copies can be made available on request by calling 0808 196 5105 or emailing info@connecting-sheffield.co.uk.

Leaflets will be posted in and around the city centre to keep businesses and residents updated with the plans.

Christmas fundraising drive to support cats and kittens in need A local animal charity is hosting an online Christmas raffle to raise much-needed funds that have been severely dented during the pandemic so it can continue helping cats and kittens like Jam Jar. It was thought the tiny kitten was unlikely to survive but after a volunteer fosterer for the North Sheffield Branch of Cats Protection spent days and nights nurturing her through her early days she pulled through and is now thriving.

The branch has attracted a number of new volunteer fosterers this year, increasing its capacity to take in unwanted felines, with 12 cats currently being looked after while awaiting new owners.

But with this has come a steep rise in costs, including food, vet and pen maintenance bills, and with Covid19 restrictions preventing any face-to-face fundraising taking place, the kitty is running low.

In a final fundraising push of 2020, the branch has put together some fantastic prizes to raffle off, with the first prize winner receiving a portrait of their beloved pet painted by a local artist. Second and third prizes are alcohol and chocolate selections, with five other winners getting luxury cat-themed hampers.

Unfortunately, she was very poorly, already very thin and refusing to eat, but the vet asked Cats Protection if they would give Jam Jar a chance and volunteers swung in to action to shower her with care and attention.

North Sheffield Branch Team Leader Daisy Robinson said: “Jam Jar has had a few visits to the vets since and every time they have seen a slight improvement but on her last visit they said she looked like a different kitten!

“She has started to come out of her shell as she began to feel better and is starting to learn how to play. She was given a special toy hedgehog with a beating heart which she would just lay with all day, but now she is more confident and will leave it to go off exploring and playing.

“This is just one of the success stories that we have had this year and it’s heartwarming to witness. We know it has been a difficult year for everyone but we hope people will see how much effort we put in to help unwanted cats and feel able to support our Christmas raffle, which will allow us to continue supporting more cats like Jar Jam.”

sheffield care homes launch christmas message exchange

Country Court, a national care home provider, is launching a ‘Christmas Message Exchange’ to enable local people to exchange festive messages with residents in their 33 care homes across the UK. One of the highlights of the Christmas festivities for many care home residents is the wonderful Christmas visits they usually receive from local schools, nurseries, and community groups.

Country Court have set up a ‘Christmas Message Exchange’ to help those in care homes send and receive Christmas messages with people locally. Anyone can take part in the Christmas message exchange; all they need to do is either: Make a Christmas card or record a video message. Messages and cards can be sent directly to their local Country Court Care Home or sent via WhatsApp to 07872 542369. The video messages can be songs, music or a festive message for residents. The care home residents are planning to send cards and messages back to people who send messages in.

“2020 has not been an easy year for older people, especially with not being able to see loved ones as much as they would like. This Christmas will not be

the same celebration that our residents usually enjoy, but staff are already going above and beyond to make the festive season as special as possible.” Said Alykhan Kachra Co-CEO of Country Court.

Country Court Care Homes would usually be filled with entertainers performing carol concerts, pantomimes, and singalongs. Children from local schools would be joining residents to sing carols and chat over cups of tea and mince pies, and families and local people would be enjoying Christmas Fairs and events.

This year Activity Teams are busy helping residents make decorations, wreaths, and cards. Catering teams are planning festive menus and resident choirs are practising their carols in a bid to ensure residents have the best Christmas possible.

However, retaining connections with their local community is vital for the health and wellbeing of residents. This year more than ever, care home residents would love to exchange Christmas messages and festive wishes with local people.

United started to get back on top. Lowe had an effort deflected behind for a corner, from which McBurnie had a header saved. Berge then moved into an advanced position and from McBurnie’s inch perfect pass, the Norwegian fired a powerful effort just too high on the angle. The opening five minutes of the second half saw both teams have a chance and a corner. Blades handed away third round tie

The Blades have been drawn away to Bristol Rovers in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup. Chris Wilder will take his side to the Memorial Stadium after Paul Tisdale’s League One side thrashed Darlington 6-0 at the weekend.

Ties will be played over the weekend of Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January 2021.

A confirmed date and kick-off time will be announced in due course.

Exeter away for the Owls in the FA Cup Sheffield Wednesday will travel to League Two side Exeter City in the third round of the FA Cup. The draw was made on Monday evening ahead of the final second round fixture between Canvey Island and Boreham Wood.

The Owls will head to St James’ Park on the weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January.

The two sides last met during our 2011/12 League One promotion-winning campaign.

Wednesday defeated the Grecians 3-0 at Hillsborough in September 2011, but the three points were Exeter’s in the return meeting at St James’ Park in February 2012, as we slipped to a 2-1 loss.

I am a fighter Owls defender Julian Börner endured a tough start to the 2020/21 season.

The centre back – who recently surpassed the 50-appearance milestone for the club – struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI at the beginning of the season.

But it’s fair to say the popular defender has fought back and has rediscovered his form for the Owls, contributing to three clean sheets from our last five games.

But while the 0-0 draw against a strong Stoke side presented more positives from a defensive perspective, the 29-year-old spoke of the need to turn these one-point games into three.

“We have been strong at the back,” Börner said.

“We have not been losing and this is good, a positive thing but we need goals.

“That responsibility is with us all, from the back, defenders, midfielders and strikers, it has been a period where we haven’t scored enough.

“But we are one team, we are defending well but when we have chances in the game we have to score and Wednesday is the next chance.

“Everybody here knows I have a good mentality, I am a fighter, I have fought hard to be back in the squad, I’m training well and I hope I can help the team with my attitude and my game.”

Wednesday are soon back in action on Wednesday, hosting a high-flying Reading side who hit the ground running this season.

The Royals are the joint second highest scorers in the division and Börner continued: “It will be a tough game versus Reading but yes, we need points and that is the main thing.

“I hope Wednesday we can pick up three points.”
