YOUR CHANCE TO TELL SHEFFIELD COUNCIL WHERE TO SPEND THEIR 2018/19 BUDGET Sheffield City Council are inviting residents to talk with them about where money should be spent, about council services and your experiences of using them.

There’s a survey at www.sheffield. gov.uk/budget and Budget Consultation events in January where you can give

your views.

They want to hear from residents and businesses to help them decide spending priorities so that they can set the Council’s budget for the next year (April 2018 to March 2019). To help inform their approach to the budget, they also want to hear about your experiences

of using services in Sheffield.

As well as this survey, the council are holding public meetings across the city where you can learn more about the Council’s budget and ask questions of senior Councillors and Council officers.

The budget consultation runs from until Friday 19th January 2018.

There will also be more detailed consultations conducted with service users on specific proposals - which will also contribute to the decision making process. The results of the consultation will then be considered and reviewed before final decisions are made on the 2018-19

HEALTH TEAMS ENCOURAGE PEOPLE IN DONCASTER & ROTHERHAM TO RETHINK THEIR DRINK Doncaster Council and NHS organisations in Doncaster are encouraging residents in the borough to rethink their drink and live healthier lives in the New Year.

During January, Doncaster Council, Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, and Doncaster Clinical

Commissioning Group are asking local people to sign up for Alcohol Concern’s ‘Dry January’ and give their bodies a holiday from alcohol.

Dr Navjot Ahluwalia, Executive Medical Director at RDaSH, said: “While alcohol can have a very temporary positive impact on our mood and can bring people together at this time of year, in the

long-term it can result in serious mental health and relationship problems. It can also cause memory problems. Dry January is a good way to reset your relationship with alcohol.”

The NHS recommends that people should not regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week (one unit of alcohol is about half a pint of normal-strength lager; or a single

measure of spirit, however a small glass of wine contains about 1.5 units of alcohol).

Nigel Ball, Doncaster Council Cabinet Member for Public Health said: “Research shows that cutting back on alcohol can help you sleep better, lose weight and save money too. It’s a great way to start the New Year and I would encourage local residents to take part.”

Anurag Agrawal, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “Despite being largely preventable, alcohol-related liver diseases continue to affect increasing numbers of people. Over nine million of the UK population drinks at hazardous level with up to 12% of A&E attendances related to alcohol. At any

time half of the patients admitted to gastroenterology wards have alcohol related liver injury.

Dry January is an important initiative which may prevent the physical and psychological harm caused by alcohol.”

As is the tradition, the very best indoor motorcycle trials riders in the World will be the first event if 2018 at the FlyDSA Arena when the World's No. 1 Indoor Motorcycle Trial returns for the 23rd consecutive year this Saturday 6th January!

If it’s thrills and spills, incredible riding over extremely dangerous obstacles, the very best riders the World has ever seen, then this is the event for you!

Sheffield was the brain child of Martin Lampkin and Neil Crosswaite and the event came to life back in 1996. A young fresh-faced Dougie Lampkin (MBE) pitched up to face the then World Trials Champion Jordi Tarres. To the delight of the packed arena Doug became the King of Sheffield that night, the event was born and has since become firmly embedded as the first major trials event of the year.

Sheffield has always fielded the World’s best riders, whilst recognising the importance of giving the up and coming young riders and stars of the future a chance to gain experience in front of a knowledgeable and appreciative trials audience.

Riders include; The best rider the world has ever seen – Repsol Honda rider Toni Bou now with 22 World Championships under his belt. He made his winning debut at Sheffield in 2006, the incredible Bou is still simply the best. He’s been defeated just once at Sheffield in 2016, when world number two Adam Raga gave the new TRS it’s world debut at Sheffield a delighted Raga couldn’t have wished for a better outcome on the new bike. Adam’s smooth confident riding style has helped him to win three Indoor World Championships and two Outdoor World Championships. Jaime Busto the Repsol Honda rider tipped to be the next World Champion made his debut appearance at Sheffield last year, the

exciting young rider is certainly the man to watch, it will be fantastic to see him back at Sheffield again.

The Brits are back and include multi British Champion and World Championship rider James Dabill, he’ll be back flying the flag at Sheffield again. It would be fantastic to see him on the podium again. Newly crowned British Champion Jack Price is currently lying in 13th place in TrialGP after nine rounds. Young Jack put on a good performance at Sheffield last year on the unforgiving sections, with another years-experience under his belt 2018 could do be his year? Newly crowned World Trial 2 Champion Iwan Roberts has earned his place at Sheffield, it’s a fantastic opportunity for one of our young stars to compete with the big boys in front of a massive audience of trials enthusiasts.

NEW YEAR, NEW CHALLENGE? SIGN UP FOR THE PRINCE’S TRUST! If your goal this year is to learn new skills, push yourself out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges as part of an epic team, then the Prince’s Trust programme could be for you.

The 12-week programme, for young people aged between 16-25, is made up of everything from fun and challenging team-building exercises to community based projects, making a real difference to local areas.

The programme, delivered by South Yorkshire Police and South

Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, starts again in Rotherham and Barnsley later this month, as John Daley, from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue explains.

“Over three months, we give youngsters the opportunity to really push themselves, learn new skills and have fun in the process.

“They give back to the community through local based projects, which they help to decide, and work hard to really make a difference and improve an area through that work.

“While they will learn many practical and employable skills along the way, often what we see the most is a huge increase in the confidence of those who take part, which is fantastic.

“Prince’s Trust really does help people develop and over recent years we’ve picked up numerous awards, including two for community projects and one known as a Rising Star award, which is given to the person who has shown the most progress and development across the course each year.”

The next course, in Rotherham,

will start on Monday 22 January while the Barnsley course will start the following week on Monday 29 January.

Courses will be held in Sheffield later in the year.

To find out more about the programme, and to get a taster of what it would be like before signing up, there are a number of open days taking place over the next few weeks, which people are encouraged to attend.

They will be held at Broadway in Barnsley on January 8, 10, 15 and 23rd and at Dearne Community Fire Station, in Manvers on 16, 17 and 18th for the Dearne course.

There will be sessions on each open day from 10-12pm and from 1-3pm on the above days.

SHEFFIELD OLYMPIC LEGACY PARK CELEBRATES SUCCESSES OF 2017 AND LOOKS FORWARD TO FURTHER INVESTMENT IN 2018 Representatives of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park are celebrating the ‘great team effort’ which has resulted in a number of successful developments in 2017, and are now looking ahead to build Sheffield’s reputation as ‘the only city in the world delivering Olympic legacy’.

The last 12 months have seen Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park recognised by a string of international visits, including delegates representing Kawasaki City, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry,

the Chinese Olympic Committee, the China Institute of Sport Science, and the Vereniging Sport en Gemeenten – all keen to learn from Sheffield’s health and wellbeing initiative.

The most recent guest was His Excellency, Mr Koji Tsuruoka, Japanese Ambassador to the UK, who visited Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park as part of a two-day fact-finding experience ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Richard Caborn, Project Lead of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and former Minister for Sport, said: “As we conclude one year and look ahead to the next, it’s very rewarding to look back on what has been a really exciting 12 months.

“We are proud that Sheffield is the only city in the world to be delivering Olympic legacy by bringing together expertise from academia, industry and health.

“Furthermore, proposals for two new research centres – the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Research and Innovation Centre (ORRIC) and the Centre for Child Health Technology (CCHT) – were supported in the recent Industrial Strategy Life Sciences Sector Deal

“These two pioneering projects were recognised as an example of how Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is bringing together a number of experts to deliver advanced technologies to improve the productivity of the NHS and the health of the nation.”

Also in 2017, the completion of the 3G pitch will allow Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club to return to Sheffield in March 2018, and will also be used by Oasis Academy Don Valley, UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and the community.

In September the landscaping was completed, the hoardings and fencing were removed, and the Park was opened to the public to access the pathways and green spaces.

In partnership with The Outdoor City and Accelerate, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park now offers a number of new Sheffield run routes – a 1km and 1.8km route around the park, with the option of taking in the hill and viewpoint overlooking Sheffield, and 6km or longer options taking in Sheffield and Tinsley Canal and the River Don. Richard continued: “Results have followed quickly since we began work on the site in 2013.

“We were thrilled to open it up to the public this year as it has also been a priority of ours to make it a welcoming environment for the local commu-

nity – we want it to be a place where people can walk, run, cycle, play sports and generally just enjoy themselves.”

Construction is due to start in the new year on Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) and National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering (NCEFE).

2018 will focus on private sector investment and regeneration of the wider area including the indoor arena, the new home for Sheffield Sharks basketball team, the stadium for the 3G pitch and 70,000 sq ft of office space. Scarborough International Property has been confirmed as the Investor in developing the Stadium. The development will include a new Stand, affordable office space, meeting facilities and supporter’s facilities.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD ALUMNI RECOGNISED IN THE NEW YEAR HONOURS Sheffield graduate and Honorary Doctor Dr Helen Sharman OBE has been awarded the Order of St Michael and St George in recognition of her services to science and technology educational outreach. Dr Sharman graduated from the University of Sheffield with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1984 and became the first woman to visit the Mir space station. During her mission she was involved in various experiments about the effects of weightlessness on physical, chemical and biological systems.

Professor of Arctic Ecology in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, Professor Terence Vincent Callaghan has been awarded a CMG in the Diplomatic Service and Overseas list for services to advancing knowledge and international collaboration in arctic science. Professor Callaghan began his work as an arctic plant ecologist in 1967. Over the

Professor Hilary Anne Chapman CBE, Chief Nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust and Honorary Chair in Cancer Survivorship and Honorary Doctor of Medicine at the University of Sheffield has been awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Sheffield alumnus Kevin Clifford, a masters graduate in Health Economics and Management at the University of Sheffield has been awarded an OBE for services to nursing. Kevin Clifford, a miner’s son, was the only male in a class of 92 Sheffield nursing students when he started training for his career in the 1970s. He retired last year from his role as the Chief Nurse for the city’s Clinical Commissioning Group – where he was responsible for working with all healthcare providers in the city to monitor the quality of services being received by patients.

Professor Sir Keith Burnett, President and ViceChancellor of the University of Sheffield said: “I am delighted that colleagues and alumni of The University of Sheffield have been honoured for their longstanding commitment to Science and Health.

ARE YOU LOSING YOUR LOCAL BANK? The Royal Bank of Scotland Group is closing hundreds of branches across the country including 197 NatWest banks In our area, these are the Nat West branches which will close. Stocksbridge, Broomhall, Firth Park, Hillsborough, Millhouses and Woodseats in Sheffield; Dinnington in Rotherham and Bawtry in Doncaster.

They will all close between May 21st and June 25th.

From the information on the Nat West website these will be the only branches available in the city:City Centre, 42 High Street, Sheffield Hunter’s Bar, 669 Ecclesall Road, Attercliffe 145 Attercliffe Common, NatWest has a national agreement with the Post Office to provide customers with a range of banking services, including paying money in, taking money out and checking balances. Businesses customers can also get coinage.

The bank, still 72% owned by the taxpayer, is the third to announce branch closures and job cuts in recent weeks.

An RBS spokesman said the decision came because a growing number of customers are now using online banking rather than high street branches.

Lloyds have also said it will close 49 branches, in Sheffield this means the Banner Cross and Broomhall branches will be closing.

Yorkshire Building Society will also close 13 branches as part of cuts. At present this does not affect branches in the Sheffield area.

Britain suffers as bank branch closures continue RBS is under fire for its branch closure programme. Residents and businesses in two Doncaster market towns, Bawtry and Thorne, got that early Christmas present they never wanted.

RBS let them know their local NatWest Branches would close in 2018.

For Thorne, a town with a huge range of retail businesses, local manufacturers close to the town centre, and surrounded by farm businesses, this was the second blow in six months. In June, the HSBC branch closed. The nearest NatWest branch is 10 miles away in Goole.

For Bawtry, with a busy high street and a thriving evening economy, and a wide range of small businesses, NatWest represents the last bank in town. The nearest NatWest branch is Doncaster town centre 9 miles away. In 2015, the neighbouring market town of Tickhill lost its last bank.

This story is repeated all over the country.

In 2017, over 700 bank branches closed.”

In 2015, after a wave of local closures, and with a general election imminent, the coalition Government made noises about ensuring communities had a say.

The banks and Government agreed an “Access to Banking Protocol”. This included sentiments about “working with the community to establish the impact of the branch closure”; finding “suitable alternative provision” and putting “alternative banking services in place.”

Many people, predominantly older citizens, are not online. The Office for National Statistics report that 4.8 million

people have never used the Internet; and half a million more have not used the Internet in the last three months. Over half a million Yorkshire residents don’t use the internet. If you are a shop, you can’t virtually transfer a bag of takings to the bank.

TRY DRY JANUARY - IT’S GOOD FOR YOU WHAT’S ON WHERE Dry January is an initiative that encourages people to abstain from drinking for 30 consecutive days; last year more than 2 million people signed up to take part and help kick start a healthier lifestyle.

A relatively small sacrifice can bring a big return – participants noticed weight loss, better sleep and money saved when they ditched booze for just a month.

Why try Dry January In a society that uses alcohol to relax, celebrate and enjoy life, we often don’t stop and think about how much we’re drinking or what the side effects of living in a drinking culture can be. Giving it up for a 30 days helps rebalance the scales; we have the chance to give our body a break and take notice of the moments we reach for our favourite alcoholic beverage and examine whether it’s always necessary to have a drink. Gram for gram, alcohol has as many calories as pure fat; a diet that includes alcohol regularly can lead to weight gain over time. As a result of drinking, fat also accumulates in the liver – as little as two weeks of abstinence from alcohol can help return your liver to good health.

Give up alcohol for a month and you might also notice an improvement in your sleep. Though we sometimes associate alcohol with making it easier to nod off,

in reality even a couple of drinks can interfere with your normal sleep patterns.

When we drink, we often fall immediately into a deep sleep, skipping the first stage of REM sleep. As the alcohol wears off, we slip back into a lighter REM sleep that is more easily disrupted, causing us to wake.

This is why many people find after a night of heavy drinking they wake after just a few hours of sleep and still feel exhausted.

How to do it Participating in Dry January is as simple as committing to 30 days without drink, and it’s not too late to get started now.

You can sign up to participate formally on the Dry January website, run by charity Alcohol Concern. Cancer Research UK also runs its own programme to raise money for cancer, called the Dryathalon.

Here you can sign up solo or as part of a team to quit alcohol for a month and raise money for a good cause in the process.

FLYDSA ARENA’S REVIEW OF 2017 & A PREVIEW OF AN EXCITING 2018 AND BEYOND....

2017 was the Arena’s 26th year in showbiz and yet again it was another memorable season both on the stage and behind the scenes!

Behind the scenes saw the Arena announce a major new partnership with Yorkshire’s award-winning Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) that has seen it acquire the naming rights to the Sheffield Arena. The six-figure investment by DSA saw the Arena re-named as the FlyDSA Arena in an initial three year deal.

On the stage highlights from this year saw sell-out gigs from the likes of Drake, Olly Murs, Take That, Bruno Mars, Green Day, The Killers, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, The Who, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins and not forgetting Queen + Adam Lambert.

Back in January the producers of family favourite Disney On Ice brought us 7 performances of Marvel Universe LIVE! with over 35,000 fans experiencing an epic live show featuring Marvel Super Heroes, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and a promis to return in 2019 with even more super heroes!

February saw the hilarious Jack Whitehall’s comedic talents return to the stand-up stage as he embarked upon his biggest ever tour. Other hilarious acts that graced the Arena’s stage included Micky Flanagan who sold out 3

nights and his show on the 13th May broke venue records and became the Arena’s biggest ever capacity for a comedy performance which now stands at 12,231.

American comedy sensations, the Impractical Jokers debuted at the Arena in October, followed by comedy hero John Bishop who joined us for 2 dates in November, whilst we ended the year with TV favourites Mrs Browns Boys who performed 4 shows in November & December.

Peter Kay brought his 3 hour charity dance-a-thon, Dance for Life to Sheffield back in April, which saw an amazing party atmosphere with the man himself on the decks, all in the name of charity.

In May, Professor Brian Cox took us on a breathtaking journey to edge of our current understanding about the origin and evolution of the Universe and landed a Guinness World Record for the best-selling science tour with another live show which will see hime return to the Arena in 2019!

And with amazing performances from the likes of, The Vamps, Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott and Kings of Leon the Arena was certainly an exciting place to be in 2017!

The venue even had their first ever Facebook live artiste announcement when local band The Sherlocks were announced at the venue as

Kings of Leon support with a live accoustic set.

November brought us one of the busiest weeks in the venues 26 year history. In one week the Arena hosted 6 performances of Disney On Ice, Phil Collins, The Killers & Sheffield Steelers which were watched by over 45,000 fans.

Whilst at the same time went on sale with a total of 24 event days for Peter Kay, The Human League, Sheffield Steelers 2018 fixtures, Dancing On Ice Live Tour & a WWE Live tour that between them sold over 110,000 tickets making it one of the busiest weeks since the venue first opened its doors in 1991.

So, into 2018 and the venue’s first event, as it has been for the past 21 years, is the Indoor Bike Trials with Sheffield hosting the only UK leg of this World series.

Closely followed in February

by Arenacross, where the Arena is transformed into an indoor motorbike dirt track with over 4000 tons of dirt laid on the Arena floor.

Early in the new year Britian’s biggest & strongest men will storm the Arena for the ultimate showdown of strengh as Britain’s Strongest Man comes to town!

Other sporting offerings include Premier League Darts annual showdown for the 13th consecutive year, Kell Brook returns to the ring in March Kell when he faces

Sergey Rabchenko in his debut at Super-Welterweight live on Sky Sports & of course there’ll be plenty of action from country’s most succesful ice hockey team, Sheffield Steelers.

2018 is set to be another bumper year, with many high profile events set to play the venue, including a sold-out Sam Smith gig who will be opening his tour at the Sheffield venue in March, Katy Perry, Michael McIntyre both in June & Sheffield’s own The Human League rounding off the year in December.

Torvill & Dean’s Dancing On Ice Live Tour is set to return following a four year break, this spectacular new show will perform all over the UK throughout March and April 2018 – arriving in Sheffield for 3 performances on the 27th, 28th & 29th March 2018.

Family shows include WWE Live in May and of course, Disney On Ice will be back with another ice spectacular soon to be confirmed!

WALKING WITH DINOSAURS - The Arena Spectacular, is back amazing audiences in Sheffield for the first time since 2013 as the greatest creatures ever to walk the earth return before your eyes. The show will be returning to Sheffield for 4 performances in August.

Which is followed later the same month by 7 performance of Cirque du Soleil’s brand new Tour OVO featuring a cast of 50 performing

artists from 17 countries. In October the Arena will be hosting Supervet starring Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, in his first ever live stage show. We were also excited to announce that Fast & Furious Live is coming to the FlyDSA Arena in April. The action and excitement from one of the most popular and enduring film series of all-time will come to life in this ground-breaking live-arena tour.

Reviewing the year Head of Entertainment & Events at SIV Dominic Stokes said, “It is clear to see that it has been another great year for the FlyDSA Arena. Sometimes it’s very easy to focus on what we don’t have, or what we may have missed out on. However when you put things in perspective and see this list of events, this venue continues to be, after 27 years, one of the number one places to go in this region for a fantastic night out whatever the reason you have come for.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER LOST HISTORY OF SHEFFIELD’S MEDIEVAL CASTLE Archaeologists at the University of Sheffield have uncovered the forgotten history of one of northern England’s most significant medieval castles.

The study, led by Professor John Moreland, Professor Dawn Hadley and Dr Gareth Dean from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, in collaboration with Museums Sheffield and archaeological specialists in the city, has found new evidence for the history of Sheffield Castle – in the vaults of Weston Park museum.

Built in Sheffield in the late 11th or early 12th century, the castle played an important role in English history. Mary Queen of Scots, who was regarded by many as the rightful Queen of England, was held prisoner there for more than 10 years, between 1570 and 1584, before she was executed in 1587.

It was home to some of the great families of the time, the Furnivals, Nevils, Shrewsburys and Howards, and Cardinal Wolsey (Archbishop of York, Lord Chancellor and chief adviser to Henry VIII), is likely to have stayed there in 1530.

The castle was a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War until it fell to Parliamentary forces on 11 August 1644. Its strength and importance were such that Parliament felt the need to eliminate the threat it posed, and, in 1646, ordered its demolition.

Earlier excavations on the site of the castle, particularly those carried out in the 1920s and 1950s, remain largely unpublished but yielded a great number of finds and records which have been conserved in the City’s museum collections.

Funded by a legacy donation from Sheffield Archaeology alumnus Pamela Staunton, University researchers together with local archaeological specialists have for the first time studied in detail the finds from those excavations –

and are gaining important new insights into life in Sheffield, and in the castle, in the middle ages.

The University of Sheffield-led research team now believes that the creation of the castle was accompanied by the development of a planned town, whose streets still form the core of Sheffield city centre.

The earliest finds from the 20th-century excavations date from the 11th or 12th centuries, and consist of pottery from kilns in Lincolnshire. By the later middle ages some of the castle’s pottery was made in kilns in Sheffield itself, though some was being imported from the Low Countries.

Some of the finds bring us very close to the people of Sheffield – a cobbler dumped waste leather and old shoes into the castle’s moat where they survived to provide us with unique insights into Sheffield fashions in footwear from the 15th to the 17th century.

Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, and Chair of the University’s Castlegate Steering Group, said: “Sheffield is known for steel production and its rich industrial heritage, but its roots lie in the middle ages. If it wasn’t for its demolition following the Civil War, Sheffield’s skyline might still be dominated by its castle.”

“When people think about castles from medieval England they tend to think of Lincoln or Pontefract.

We hope that our work, and the new excavations due to commence in the Spring of 2018, will make them think of Sheffield instead!”

As well as helping to highlight Sheffield’s medieval heritage, academics from the University are working closely with Sheffield City Council and the Friends of Sheffield Castle – a voluntary group who work to protect and promote the castle site – to use that heritage to help the regeneration of Castlegate, the city’s historic but rundown former heart.

As a first step, students from the University of Sheffield’s School of Architecture have submitted designs to the City Council for the construction of a temporary ‘Great Pier’ – to attract visitors to the area and to provide a viewing platform to give the people of Sheffield the best possible view of the new excavations.

Also, a team of University of Sheffield archaeologists, architects and computer scientists, in partnership with creative agency Human Studio, have been awarded funding to develop a virtual reality experience of Sheffield Castle.

Professor Dawn Hadley, Vice-President of Arts and Humanities at the University of Sheffield, who is leading the virtual reality project, added: VR will make it possible to view the medieval castle for the first time in almost 400 years, particularly from the Great Pier if constructed. We hope that this will encourage development plans for Castlegate that place the heritage of the city at the heart of its future.”

Findings from the research on Sheffield Castle are also being fed into undergraduate teaching modules for archaeology students at the University of Sheffield to demonstrate how archaeology can help us to understand the past and build for the future.

Archaeology students at Sheffield have access to one of the largest communities of medieval archaeologists in the UK, with expertise ranging from late Antiquity to the early modern period.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is another great example of how the partnership approach to regeneration in Castlegate is working – in this case with the University, heritage groups and the Council each contributing expertise and resources to a common goal.”

A varied week, but after the Christmas period, I was ready to get out, anywhere, in the pursuit of a fish or two! Like many anglers, I had fishing related presents for Christmas, including one I’ve been after for a while, but never got around to buying. I’ve watched the odd Youtube video, which showed a chap using a magnet to scour the lake bed, picking up a number of objects, and thought it looked fun, so was delighted when my wife remembered and bought one for me. On Christmas morning, I unwrapped a few gifts, before picking up a nondescript box, and as I moved it across the bed, the nail clippers instantly shot off my lap and affixed themselves firmly to the underside of the box I held. Obviously, it wasn’t a Playstation 4 then, but it promised to be as much fun as I unveiled a strong magnet!

I couldn’t wait to have a play, so on Boxing Day, we were off to a local reservoir, where I know there is fifteen feet of water under the floating jetties. What had been dropped off by other people though? Anything valuable? It was time to find out!

I attached my magnet to a stout length of paracord, and tested it before it was submerged, just to be sure it broke free of the magnetic field, before it snapped the line, and lowered it into the depths… On my first drop, I retrieved a rusty piece of chicken wire, hardly the doubloons or treasure I was seeking, but at least it worked. Over the course of the next hour, my wife and I salvaged a claw hammer, screwdriver, a couple of wire traces (trebles still attached) a rowlock, numerous bolts, and plenty of other metallic bits. Sadly, none of our finds were of value, but we had spent an enjoyable hour in the fresh air, and I knew that if I dropped my keys in (again) I could now get them back with ease! Great fun!

I’ve been fishing too, and travelled to Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire in search of roach and chub in bitterly cold conditions. On arrival, the lake was eighty percent frozen, which limited peg choice (I’m not an ice breaker) so I settled into the far corner, my least favourite peg! I got the quivertip rod out, selected the lightest tip, and set up quickly; it was too cold to hang about! A small amount of Spotted Fin groundbait was mixed with a handful of tiny pellets and casters, and on the hook, I had the option to swap between bread flake, bread punch, maggot, and caster to try and keep bites coming.

The air temperature was hovering around -3, so the groundbait was packed into a small feeder, cast out into the middle of the lake, and I sat back to wait with a warming mug of tea…brrr!

Within ten minutes, an almost imperceptible twitch of the tip denoted interest, and after a flick of the wrist to strike, the familiar kick of a small skimmer resulted. It wasn’t a big fish, but it was a fish, and I hoped more would follow. For the next two hours, I managed a fish every few minutes, a mixture of skimmers, roach, and ide, but none of the chub I’d hoped for. In Wall Pool, a fair shoal of chub reside, and if you can find them, and get them feeding, then a big net is on the cards! The sun finally hit the water, and the bites tailed off. Changing hook baits made little difference, then as the sun warmed the water, I noticed huge slabs of ice breaking away from the far bank, and moving around the pool in the breeze. Ten minutes later, and a forty yards long crust of ice settled directly in front of me, rendering my quivertip tactics impossible as I couldn’t get the line out of the water over the shelf of ice, so decided to pack up, and return another day. I’d enjoyed my morning, catching a steady stream of pristine silver fish, nothing big, but welcome in such freezing conditions.

As I packed my kit in the van, I spied my magnet, and couldn’t resist a quick snoop around the nearest pegs, which are also the most popular due to their proximity to the car park. The magnet sank to the bottom, and I immediately felt it attach to something metallic, so quickly lifted it to find a nice (almost new) pair of tackle scissors in my possession! The

second drop revealed a tin can, as did the third, so they were quickly disposed of in the bin behind me.

Another drop picked up a shiny knife, then another pair of scissors, and then, unbelievably, a third pair of snips! I found a swimfeeder, bait drill (rusty) and a pair of forceps, and a couple more tin lids before it was time to go home, but a few minutes detecting had resulted in some new tackle for me! I can see this getting addictive…

My final session this week was a social outing with a few lads from a local lure group on the canals around Stoke-on-Trent. We met at the usual place, and the few of us who braved the appalling weather set off along the towpath. Paul was hoping for his first lure caught pike, the rest of us happy with anything piscine, but all looking forward to a morning of banter and fun. However, after finding that any overhanging undergrowth had recently been cut back (butchered) by the Canal and River Trust, it promised to be hard work to find any fish, on a canal bereft of cover, and so it proved, as we struggled to get any bites at all for the first hour!

We plodded onwards, exploring any likely crevice, shelf, or smidgen of remaining cover, until eventually, Lee hooked into a pristine jack pike which was safely netted. The great thing about this particular group of lads is that they are keen to help each other, so Lee and Chris expertly demonstrated to Paul how to safely handle, unhook, and care for the fish before it was gently returned. If you don’t know, going with more experienced anglers is a great way to gain knowledge… Within minutes, I’d found a couple of tiny perch, barely bigger than my lure, and Chris had missed a bite, so we knew there were odd fish in the area, but tempting them was a different matter! Despite the lads constantly changing lures, lines and tactics, we caught very little else… although Dave did manage a personal best plank of about six feet long!

We continued to explore the waters, moving from one canal to another, and finally located a ‘nest’ of small perch from which we managed to extract a few. I’d stuck to dropshot tactics, picking off eight perch in total, but aside from three more for Chris, and Lee’s pike, it was extremely hard work, but still in high spirits, we moved to a ‘banker’ swim.

After I left, the best fish of the day, a 7lb pike, tripped up over one of Dave’s lures, and a few small perch were landed to finish the day. Sadly, Paul never did get his first pike, but his enthusiasm was contagious, and we all enjoyed the day immensely.

ONARIASE BRADFORD JOINS ROBINS CITY CLASH REARRANGED Rotherham United defender Emmanuel Onariase has joined Cheltenham Town on a loan deal until the end of the season, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

The former West Ham United youngster has featured twice for the Millers this season, with both outings coming in this year’s Checkatrade Trophy competition.

The 21-year-old signed for the Millers in August from Brentford and rejoins the Robins, who he enjoyed a loan spell with last season.

Rotherham United’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Bradford City has now been rearranged.

The match was originally scheduled for January 6th but Bradford’s involvement in the FA Cup resulted in a postponement.

The match will now take place on Tuesday 23rd January at AESSEAL New York Stadium, kick off 7.45pm.

ROWE’S JOY AT ROVERS’ PERSISTENCE Tommy Rowe was pleased with his teammates’ persistence as they grabbed a point at the death at Peterborough United on New Year’s Day in Sky Bet League One. Ben Whiteman’s 93rd-minute equaliser ensured that Rovers maintained their festive unbeaten run, and Rowe is happy their hard work is paying off.

“It was a difficult game, it was one that we could enjoy in terms of that we’d built this run with nine points from the last three games and we knew that we could come here with plenty

“I think our hard work over this last week or so has really paid off, we had a few chances near the end where we could’ve scored more and got the win on another day, but it’s a great point.

“The clean sheets have been brilliant and the back four and Ian Lawlor have been fantastic, everyone right through the team are straight on the front foot and that’s the best way to defend.”

Rovers have picked up 10 points from a

possible 12 over the festive period, and Rowe now believes that the young side now has the ability to kick on as the season progresses.

“We’ve stuck to what we know, this group of players has the potential to go very far, you can’t get away from the fact that this is such a young team, the growth over the last five games just shows where we want to go,” Rowe said.

BOSS PROUD AFTER DERBY POINT

The Blades boss was proud of his players as they fought for a share of the New Year spoils at Pride Park.

Chris Wilder said he was proud of his players following the New Year’s Day draw at Derby County.

Leon Clarke’s 15th of the season cancelled out Matěj Vydra’s first-half penalty, to earn the Blades a share of the spoils at the iPro Stadium on Monday.

And the performance against the Rams earnt praise from the boss, who remarked: “It was a deserved draw and I’m really proud of the players.

“Our confidence and belief to a big dent on Saturday, because it was a missed opportunity and a game we should have won.

“So to come here and play on the front foot, like I’ve always said we will, meant we fully deserved our

point.“A few of my pals, including one who works at Derby, looked at me gone out when I said we’d come here and take the game to them.”

Wilder added: “You look at the back of the programme and we are light at the moment, they made five changes and we couldn’t make as many as I’d have liked played Saturday and Monday.

“I understand the group needs help if

we’re to kick on in the second-half of the season, but the lads gave everything for the football club and have done consistently.

“If they didn’t the away end would have been half empty and it would have been at Villa. The supporters enjoy watching us play and back the club to the hilt.

“We’re in a good place and I’m really delighted about what I’ve got.”

Referee Bond awarded a penalty and VYDRA blasted past Moore. Russell and Vydra linked up again but the goalscorer was off target and United were more than a match for the home side. On 39 minutes a great run from Donaldson caused problems for Keogh and after cutting inside, the Blades striker forced a save out of Carson.

The final chance of the first half fell to the visitors following a rapid break from a Blades corner but Weimann, on the left, flashed his shot across Moore’s goal.

United began the second half with a number of deliveries into the Derby box and followed those up with a great move from right to left, which started with Donaldson holding up possession.

There was another Fleck chance, which was blocked, before United deservedly levelled on 57 minutes. Donaldson found space to swing in a cross from the right and CLARKE was left free to position a header into the bottom corner, beyond Carson.

The goal and United’s front-foot approached had the Derby fans nervous but despite being on top, the visitors were unable to test Carson further.

Carruthers replaced Duffy, who picked up a knock, whilst Fleck’s drilled freekick was on target and deflected but comfortable for the home goalkeeper.

As the final ten minutes approached Nugent had the ball in the Blades net but Keogh fouled Clarke in the build-up and that proved to be the home side’s final chance.

Derby were happy to operate on the break in an entertaining final period as United maintained the energetic performance, looking for a victory.

However, there was little to report late on in terms of goalscoring opportunities and all was left was for the fans to take the applause of the sold out away contingent after the final whistle.

REMARKABLE YEAR FOR THE BLADES WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH 2017 will be remembered for a long time by Blades fans. The year began with optimism that promotion might finally be achieved, and ended with the club riding high in the Championship.

United won 91 points in the last calendar year, a near record.

A win against Bolton Wanderers would have seen the record tumble, maybe this year. Despite a disappointing run of form, there is plenty of confidence going forward into 2018.

United currently sit 7th in the Championship

and have topped the table during the course of the season. A vastly important January window is upon us and if Chris Wilder is to complete an unlikely double promotion then he must be backed in the market. There has been an eruption of grumblings in the last few weeks that Wilder will not receive the backing required in the window. This might be true, given the fact he has stated United will likely make only one permanent signing, that being Ryan Leonard. What Blades fans can’t forget is Wilder’s shrewdness

in the transfer market and his ability to stretch his budget. In the last January window, James Hanson, Samir Carruthers and Jay O’Shea all arrived.

All three had a role to play in getting the club over the line.

Wilder will hope to achieve something similar, however the incomings are more likely to be loans. Get it right and the prospect of a top six spot is a real one. However, should the club have a poor window, then the Bramall Lane faithful might have to accept a mid-table finish, which would be no disgrace.

BULLEN SCATHING OF OWLS DISPLAY Lee Bullen pulled no punches in his assessment of the Owls’ 3-0 home defeat to Burton.
