‘MARLENE… FETCH THE JAGUAR WE’RE OFF TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE!’ Gentlemen’s Day, at the renowned St Leger festival at Doncaster Racecourse, heralds the ﬁercely fought Doncaster Cup which this year celebrates its 250 year anniversary. And, to commemorate this remarkable event Doncaster Racecourse has secured a guest appearance from a British icon known for his suave, debonair appearance and ostentatious spending to get one up on his friend Del Trotter. The man in question is non other than John Challis who played Boycie in the legendary sitcom Only Fools and Horses.

“Our Gentlemen’s Day was a huge success last year and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors in their droves once again for a superb race card,” said Abby Chandler Marketing Manager Doncaster Racecourse. “We are delighted Boycie will be here to celebrate this extra special day with us and look forward to his charismatic charm captivating visitors.” The Doncaster Cup was ﬁrst run in 1766 on Cantley Common. The race, originally known as the Doncaster Gold Cup, is run over 2 miles and 2 furlongs

and is one of Britian’s leading events for horses who specialise in long distances – otherwise known as Stayers and is the final leg of the prestigious stayers’ triple crown. Records show that the first horse to win back in 1766 was Charlotte in a race where only five horses ran. The race, which pre-dates the St. Leger Stakes sees the best staying thoroughbreds in Britain and Ireland vying for the coverted winners title. “We’ve got an extensive variety of ways to be part of the action this Gentlemen’s Day such as an opportunity for our

MIND THE MOOR MARKET STAMPEDE AS YOUNGSTERS INVITED TO MAKE MINI HERD OF SHEFFIELD You’ve seen the Herd of Sheffield, you’ve seen the Little Herd and now you’re invited to make a brand new Mini Herd for a trail through Sheffield’s Moor Market, on Thursday 11 August. The brightly decorated elephants have appeared all over Sheffield, forming the largest art exhibition the city has ever seen. Now the Moor Market is giving people the chance to decorate their very own tiny elephant as part of the Mini Herd trail. There are around 40 elephants available, which will all be decorated on Thursday 11 August

inside the Moor Market. The decorated elephants will then be part of the market’s Mini Herd, a trail which will take youngsters and their families on a hunt around the market with a treat for all those who ﬁnd them all. It is completely free to take part and those who put their design on an elephant can claim it for keeps once the trail ﬁnishes at the end of the summer period. Traders in the market will be able to sponsor an elephant to appear at their stall, with all sponsorship money going to the Children’s Hospital Charity.

A village green will be opened inside the market and events include a Village Fete which will be open all day with traditional games, lucky dip and bingo for all the family, Build a Bear and a Teddy Bear’s Picnic with a Winnie the Pooh meet and greet, and a takeover from Little Shefﬁeld who will bring a full day of exciting activities. This year’s campaign culminates on Friday 21 October with a night of live TV on Channel 4, led by the brightest stars in ﬁlm, TV and music. Every day, around 81 people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire and The Humber. By joining Stand Up To Cancer, supporters in the regional will be joining forces with celebrities, doctors, nurses and scientists to generate funds, raise awareness and help accelerate life-saving research. SUPERSPAN GANTRY CLOSURES FOR M1 SMART MOTORWAY UPGRADE Eight ‘superspan’ gantries crossing the M1 near Shefﬁeld will be installed overnight as part of a major smart motorway project to tackle congestion and improve journey times. Contractors for Highways England will be installing the gantries, which will carry message and variable speed limit signs, between junction 32 (M18) and junction 34 (Meadowhall) overnight, between 9pm and 6am, starting on Monday 15 August. The gantries – which will span both the northbound and southbound carriageways – are approximately 45 metres wide, weigh up to 30 tonnes. A special 200 tonne crane is required to install them. The ﬁrst 2 gantries will be installed overnight on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 August between junction 33 (Doncaster) and junction 34.

To carry out the work lanes 2 and 3 on the northbound carriageway and all 3 lanes on the southbound carriageway will be closed, with traffic travelling on the hard shoulder. Traffic will be temporarily stopped while the lift is undertaken. A further 6 gantries between junctions 32 and 33 will be installed over four nights starting on Monday 22 August. The southbound carriageway will be fully closed along with lanes 2 and 3 on the northbound carriageway. The smart motorway scheme, between junction 32 of the M1 at Rotherham and junction 35a at Stocksbridge, will see the latest technology being used to monitor traffic levels and keep vehicles moving by using variable speed limits. The hard shoulder will also be permanently converted into an extra lane to increase capacity.

Highways England project manager Arun Sahni said: “The erection of a ‘superspan’ is a big job that calls for overnight closures, but then they’re very big structures. You really get a sense of their size when they are on the ground waiting to go up. “While we have the closures in place for the 6 nights we will also be carrying out other works in the area which included resurfacing of the entry slip road at junction 33.” Cleary signed diversions will be place when the southbound carriageway is closed via the A630, the A631 and M18. WASTE MANAGEMENT CONSULTATION JOIN THE MEMORY WALK TEAM OF 2016 Shefﬁeld residents, landlords and managing agents are being asked to have their say on potential changes to their waste and recycling services. Despite saving more than £6million from the annual waste services budget over the past three years, Government cuts mean the Council need to save a further £3.4million by 2017. They want to increase the amount of waste recycled across the city and provide a more efﬁcient service, without changing the collection frequency of black bins. Residents are being asked for their views

on a range of potential changes including changes to the blue box recycling service, collection times as well as the introduction of charges for replacing lost and damaged containers. This consultation is for residents who do not share their waste and recycling containers with other households. CITY SHORTLISTED FOR GREAT EXHIBITION

Sheffield has been shortlisted to host the Great Exhibition of the North in Summer 2018. Nine bids were submitted on the 30 June and four towns and cities have been selected to go through to the next stage by the Great Exhibition Board, that has representatives from the arts, culture and design sectors, and is chaired by Sir Gary Verity CEO of Welcome to Yorkshire. Sheffield will now compete with Bradford, Blackpool, and NewcastleGateshead when each city will play host to a visit from the Board in August and then called for an interview in Leeds. The Board will then report to the new Minister for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock and new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley, and the winning venue will be announced in the Autumn. The Government announced in April this year its desire for a Great Exhibition of the North and that there would be £5m funding to support the host venue to stage the planned activities. The exhibition will showcase a celebration of the great art, culture, creative industry, innovation and design from the north of England. The Sheffield Culture Consortium led Sheffield’s bid on behalf of Sheffield City Region. The two bid leaders were Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Cultural Engagement at The University of Sheffield, and Kim Streets, CEO of Museums Sheffield. Vanessa said: “We are proud that Sheffield City Region has been shortlisted in our Year of Making. We would not have been able to do this without the tremendous

support of the creative industries and businesses of our great region.Sheffield will demonstrate how we are the gateway to the North and we will work across cities and towns to help shape the future in art, design, culture and future technology. I would to thank all my colleagues in the Culture Consortium and the bid writing team for getting us on the dance floor.” Kim added: “The Great Exhibition is a brilliant opportunity for the North to demonstrate cultural excellence and ambition for the future. Sheffield City Region has talented, creative people, stunning landscape and some of the best public realm in the UK – we have the perfect stage from which to showcase the very best of the North to the World and we are thrilled to be shortlisted.” Councillor Julie Dore said: “We are delighted that Sheffield has been shortlisted for the Great Exhibition of the North. There was some tough competition and to be in the final four cities is an honour. I would like to thank the collaboration of partners from the culture consortium for the hard work they put into the bid. Obviously at this stage, we hope we can go all the way and win.” The Sheffield City Region bid has had testimonials of support by organisations and investors in the city region, and has already secured a pledge of £250,000 from Sheffield BID. The bid has support from all sectors and the team is determined to bring the Great Exhibition of the North to this region, as they believe it has the capability, creativity, environment and the right attitude to deliver a true celebration of the north.

The Alzheimer’s Society are running a memory walk at Clumber Park on Saturday 1st October 2016 and are looking for volunteers to help make Memory Walk a wonderful day for all involved. There are a number of opportunities available including route volunteers, who will be involved in marshalling and route marking. You can volunteer to welcome walkers across the ﬁnish line, or to help set up and take down the event site, or just be part of the team that will encourage others on the walk. Most of the volunteer roles will be needed between 08.00 and 16.00 depending on the role. You will receive exact timings from the Memory Walk team closer to the event day. FAMILY JOIN CANCER CHARITY’S WOODLAND WALK IN MEMORY OF SON A family from Worksop have signed up to a sponsored walk this Autumn to remember their much-loved son who lost his battle with cancer just last year. The Buckley family will take part in Weston Park Cancer Charity’s Light the Night walk this October through Ecclesall Woods to raise funds for the hospital where their son and brother, Liam, received treatment for bowel cancer, which had spread to his liver and lung. 23 year old Aerospace Engineering graduate, Liam, received chemotherapy treatment at Weston Park Hospital and despite the uncer-

tainty of things to come, chose to support Weston Park Cancer Charity throughout his cancer fight, even attending Light the Night in 2014, just an hour after his treatment had finished. This year, a group of his close friends and family will attend the event to remember Liam and raise funds to support other families in the region living with a cancer diagnosis. Liam’s mum, Janet Buckley said, “Attending Light the Night will be extremely difficult for us all this year without Liam, but I know he would love to have seen us there

supporting the hospital which cared for him right until the end.” “When Liam passed away, he left a huge hole in all our hearts- he was such an inspiration and he faced his diagnosis with such bravery and positivity. awareness and sponsorship in support of Weston Park Hospital.” Following a 4.5k route through the picturesque woodland and with an array of themed surprises along the way, the cancer charity hopes families, friends and colleagues will sign up to Light the Night and help them shine bright on the night. Charity Fundraising Manager, Sarah Cross said, “We are very grateful to Liam’s family for joining us once again at Light the Night and despite having such a difﬁcult year, wanting to raise vital funds and awareness for a cause that was, and remains, so close to all their hearts.” “The event is a chance for supporters of Weston Park Cancer Charity to come together for a magical walk through the woods in memory of loved ones or in hope of a brighter future for those ﬁghting cancer across the region.” “We’re hoping that, with a brand

new theme, and some exciting surprises along the route, more people will join us for this woodland walk and help raise money for their local cancer hospital.” Over 18,000 patients are currently under the care of Weston Park Hospital, which equates to over 150,000 individual patients visits each year. Some of the UK’s most spectacular cars will be descending on Meadowhall, South Yorkshire next month as part of a fantastic four-wheel extravaganza in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. More than 50 eye-catching cars will be cruising to the Centre where they will be displayed and demonstrated by their proud owners, who are travelling from all over the country for this special Supercar Experience. Amust for any “petrol head” or anyone who wants a day out with a difference, the Supercar Experience promises hours of rev-roaring action. The owners will be offering to take people for an unforgettable spin, or have a photograph taken with their prized possession, in exchange for a donation to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice based in Shefﬁeld. Anything from the Ferrari F40 – worth a cool £1m - to Porsches, BMWs, Lamborghinis and other aspirational cars will be there between 10am and 3pm on Saturday September 3, in the Orange Car Park at Meadowhall. Adam Thorby one of the Supercar drivers who is working with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to organise the event said: “We are excited

to bring a unique event to Meadowhall on Saturday 3rd September by way of a free supercar show called Supercar Experience. Fifty Supercar Driver members will be in attendance forming a mouthwatering static display. Event partners include the Sporting Bears who will be offering passenger rides in exchange for donations to charity. TICKETS ON SALE FOR ROCK LEGENDS THE WHO AT SHEFFIELD ARENA To celebrate the 100th concert held at The Royal Albert Hall to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust, The Who will play a new acoustic presentation of Pete Townshend’s Rock Opera Tommy. Two shows have been announced at the legendary London venue on March 30th and April 1st 2017 where the band will play the opera in full followed by a selection of other great Who songs. The band have also announced that the five UK dates scheduled for August /September 2016, originally billed as ‘Greatest Hits’ shows, will be moved to 2017 to coincide with the Royal Albert Hall dates. This means that The Who’s Sheffield Arena show originally scheduled for Saturday 3rd September will now take place on Monday 10th April 2017. For the rescheduled Greatest Hits shows Roger and Pete will play the hits as well as some lesser known Who songs and also include a new focused presentation of Tommy drawn from the Royal

Albert Hall concerts including a brand new video programme specially produced for these shows. This UK set will emulate the historic period around Live At Leeds and Woodstock when the central pivot of The Who’s show was always their performance of Tommy. For Who fans new and old this is something special that hasn’t been done by the band or seen by their audience since 1970. Tickets for the shows originally scheduled for late August and September will be valid for the new shows. A career loaded with 35 albums worth of anthems, accolades such as invitations from the White House, being featured on the Sopranos and Sky TV UK’s Revista de la Liga. Recently Fatback played at the Southport Weekender, WOMAD in Reading & Spain, London’s Jazz Cafe, The Baltic Soul Weekender, Marbella Jazz Festival, The Glastonbury Festival, The Italy Funk Fest and the O2 Indigno in 2009. The Fatback Song King Tim III (Personality Jock) is considered to be the first commercially released rap single. As well as being a pioneering force in music Fatback are also pioneers in the innovation of dance(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop is said to have contributed to the development of line dancing. Also including Double Dutch was a form of line dance. Formed in New York City in 1970, The Fatback Band was the concept of Bill Curtis, an experienced drummer, inspired to merge the “fatback” jazz beat of New Orleans into a funk band. In addition to Curtis, the band’s initial line-up included guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, trumpet player George Williams, saxophonist Earl Shelton, flautist George Adams, and keyboardist Gerry Thomas. The band specialized in playing “street funk”. The group also later included conga player Wayne Woolford, and saxophonist Fred Demerey, and guitarist George Victory. Fatback is the last of the great dance and entertaining bands, and celebrates the fact that before DJs existed, it was them who were making people dance, a skill they entertain to this day. This an all big hits show including ‘I Found Lovin’, ‘Spanish Hustle’, ‘Is This The Future’, ‘Back Strokin’, ‘Wicky Wacky’, ‘Yum Yum’, ‘Keep On Steppin’ and ‘I Like Girls’. Of course, the Fatback Band are also disco pioneers who have had many dance floor smashes and merge jazz and beats with a touch of West Indies & Caribbean style, and were awarded the Soul Survivors Magazine “Best Soul Concert” for 2013. I get about a bit, visiting different fisheries across the country in pursuit of both fish, and something to write about, and recently I visited a new venue. I won’t name the water in question (and I’d forgive you not too either if you recognise it) but my session wasn’t as enjoyable as I’d hoped it would be, for a number of reasons… I arrived after becoming embroiled in a horrendous traffic jam, so wasn’t happy to be late, and on ringing the bell, I was kept waiting until someone could issue a ticket for my forthcoming session. I paid (over the odds as it turned out) for two rods, and was brusquely instructed to dip my nets and mat before fishing; nothing wrong with being asked to dip them, but I object to being ordered… I get enough of that at home. I was also briefed on the rules, given a printed sheet of said instructions, and informed that if I was found to contravene any, then I’d ‘be off; no refund”. Again, I expect to fish within the rules, but I’m not six years old, can read, and have respect for the fishery owner, so didn’t need to be addressed in such a manner…my Forces days are long behind me. So having parked to the owner’s satisfaction, I walked around the fishery, with nets and mat dripping from the barrow, to the lake to find a spot to fish. In fairness, it’s not an unattractive water, and within a few minutes, I spotted carp, which the owner had told me went to over 20lb; a good start, although I had yet to spot a fish bigger than 5lb. As I set up, I lobbed in a few mixers, and was astonished as the water boiled into life as hungry carp slurped them down within seconds! I simply tied a hook on, swung a small piece of crust out, and was into a fish before I saw the bait hit the water! A carp of around 4lb was netted and returned, before the process was repeated, and another similar fish was bagged. And again. And again. And again… five times. Five fish in under ten minutes, all around 4-5lb; where were the bigger fish?

I was actually at the venue to sample the roach fishing which I’d been told was impressively good, so already bored with pasty bashing, I set up a simple float rig, baited with a piece of corn, and lowered the rig at the rod tip. It didn’t even settle before it slipped out of sight, and yet another 5lb carp was hooked. I changed the shot pattern on the float to load it near the hook in an attempt to get the bait through the swarm of carp, and eventually started to pick off a few roach on caster, although I was frequently rudely interrupted by more carp of similar size. I was saddened to realise that most of the carp were lipless, and had obviously been caught dozens of times previously, and despite the owner’s protestations to look after the fish, these instructions had not been heeded by many. I was amazed by the sheer number of fish in the pool, and decided to see just how disappointingly easy the fishing was. A handful of floating casters was deposited in the edge over my landing net, and as the ravenous carp appeared, I lifted the net to find a 5lb carp within! Three times! I’ve had to work harder to shoot fish in a barrel! I moved my float to a different part of the swim to try and find more roach, and although I managed fish to around 10oz, I just couldn’t avoid the carp which just ate everything… it was so ‘bad’, I didn’t dare put my hand in the water in case it came back stripped to the bone! During the course of the visit, it became apparent that although it was advertised as having fish to 20lb, and there may indeed have been a fish or two of that size to justify the advertising, but the chances of actually finding one of that ilk were slim due to the sheer number of pasties competing for bait. I never did use the two rods I paid for, with a single rod enough to keep me busy. I have never caught so many damaged fish in such a short session, and in all honesty, it wasn’t tiring, it was tiresome. I didn’t really enjoy it… I realise however, that many anglers may enjoy this fishery, and it would indeed be the ideal venue to take youngsters to catch their first fish with no chance of them getting bored, but it’s not for me, and I won’t go back. I like some element of challenge in my angling, and to be honest, there just

wasn’t enough… To end the session, I chucked in my remaining bait only to see the water boil like a Jacuzzi. I dropped the landing net in again, and came up with TWO 5lb carp, both too oblivious to realise what was happening. I think I could’ve taken the net, a pint of ﬂoating casters, and had well over 100lb of ﬁsh without baiting a hook!

STRONG START FOR MILLERS NEW Millers chief Alan Stubbs had an entertaining start to his Rotherham reign as his side shared four goals with Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of their Championship campaign. At a sun-drenched AESSEAL New York Stadium, the Millers got off to the perfect start when Danny Ward opened the scoring with a fine header before Will Vaulks’ crowned his debut with a fantastic long-range effort to double their advantage. Before the interval, George Saville gave Walter Zenga’s men a foothold in the clash and despite Dominic Iorfa seeing red early in the second half, Icelandic international Jon Dadi Bodvarsson earned the visitors a share of the spoils with a smart finish. Stubbs granted competitive debuts to four of his close season signings for the visit of the West Midlanders. Playmakers Vaulks and Jake Forster-Caskey formed a new midfield axis alongside Lee Frecklington while Anthony Forde and Jon Taylor, signed from Peterborough for a clubrecord fee this week, were asked to provide the ammunition to Millers frontman Ward. Recent signings Kelvin Wilson

and Scott Allan were named amongst the home substitutes alongside former Owls stopper Lewis Price. The visitors had the ﬁrst sight of goal when James Henry’s corner was only half-cleared into the path of Dave Edwards, but the Welsh international could not control his shot as it ballooned over the bar. At the other end, the Millers countered with purpose with Ward’s ﬂick-on releasing Taylor, who cut inside Iorfa but the explosive winger passed on the opportunity to shoot before the home side were crowded out by retreating Wolves defenders. Moments later, Forde won a tussle with Matt Doherty to win a corner before the Millers stunned the visitors faithful by breaking the deadlock in the next phase of play. The ex-Walsall winger swung a tantalising centre into the danger area and Ward ghosted away from his marker, in the six-yard box, before skilfully guiding a header past the outstretched hand of Carl Ikeme as the ball nestled in the bottom corner of the visitors net. The Millers were visibly buoyed by the opening strike and they doubled their advantage in spectacular fashion as Vaulks made himself an instant hero

with the home faithful. The visitors needlessly gave the ball away in their own half and some fine one-touch passing by the touchline presented the ex-Falkirk midfielder with the chance to control the ball before firing a fantastic dipping effort from distance which seemed to deceive Ikeme in the air as it flew into the Wolves goal. Just before the half hour mark, Bodvarsson’s deft flick paved the way for Jed Wallace to cut inside before firing a low effort from the edge of the box which stung the palms of Lee Camp, who parried the ball to safety. The Millers were rarely threatened but against the run of play, Wolves got themselves back into the game when an innocuous ball forward from Doherty caught the home defence napping and Saville timed his forward run to perfection and the visiting midfielder kept his nerve to round Camp, before sliding the ball into the heart of the Millers goal from an acute angle. The Millers were almost caught sleeping at the start of the second half when a long ball forward saw Henry get the better of Richard Wood near the touchline but his slide rule pass across the face of goal was cleared by a retreating home

defender. However, the Millers hopes of victory were given a timely boost, just eight minutes into the half, when the visitors were reduced to ten men. Camp plucked Henry’s corner out of the air before drilling a long kick forward where Taylor was left one-on-one with Iorfa and the speedy winger got the first touch before appearing to be pulled back and referee Scott Duncan had no hesitation in brandishing the red card to the Wolves defender. Taylor almost exacted his own form of retribution from the resultant free-kick but his skimming effort curled harmlessly wide of the target before Vaulks tried his luck, with another free-kick just minutes later, but his long range effort blazed over the bar. Minutes later, Ward came within inches of connecting to Stephen Kelly’s dangerous centre with the goal at his mercy before Saville became the first to see yellow for a late tackle on Kirk Broadfoot. Just past the hour mark, Doherty cut inside menacingly from the right flank before fizzing an effort which was straight down the throat of Camp before the visitors levelled matters, in their next foray of note. There looked little danger for the home side when sub Joao Teixeira picked up possession but he ran hard at the Millers

defence before sliding the ball into the path of Bodvarsson, who got a yard on Broadfoot, before striking a rasping effort, from a tight angle, which ﬂew into the top corner of the Millers goal. The home side’s frustration boiled over when ﬁrstly Kelly was shown a yellow card for hauling over Bodvarsson before Vaulks soon joined him in

the book for a late tackle on Teixeira. In the dying minutes, Wolves almost stole the points when Bodvarsson clever turn and pass gave sub Joe Mason, a glimpse of goal, but his tame effort failed to trouble Camp before Ward had Rotherham’s ﬁnal effort of note with a rasping drive which was smartly gathered by Ikeme on his own line.

ROVERS COME FROM BEHIND TWICE BUT IT’S NOT ENOUGH On a scorching first day of the new EFL season, Rovers kicked off their brand new campaign on with a trip to Accrington Stanley upon returning to the fourth tier for the first time since 2004. It was the day we had all been waiting for following an extremely busy close season for Darren Ferguson. Despite an injury struck pre-season, a strong starting eleven was named with five debutants taking with field, with a further three on the bench. It was straight into the action for Rovers at the Crown Ground as the hosts were awarded a penalty just 2 minutes into the game. Goalkeeper Aaron Chapman made a dreadful mistake as he clattered Matty Blair from behind in the area, the referee instantly pointed to the spot. Andy Williams, who scored a penalty in pre-season against Newcastle, stepped up but saw his spot kick saved by Chapman low to his right. Tommy Rowe drilled the follow up at goal but it was blocked by the defender. Just 5 minutes later the hosts took the lead through Rommy Boco. A lovely chipped ball over the top from Brown found Bocco who was through one

on one and he ﬁnished well, slipping the ball through the legs of Etheridge. It took just four minutes however for Rovers to equalise through a wonderful Tommy Rowe effort. Picking the ball up on the left, he played a lovely one-two with Marquis before beating two defenders and drilling the ball into the bottom corner. Andy Butler went inches away just minutes later as Coppinger delivered a corner into the box, with Butler storming in his header was just over the bar. On the half hour mark, despite Rovers dominance in possession, Accrington took the lead again. A freak goal, Matty Pearson picked up a loose ball and tried his luck from 30 yards. As the ball bobbled in front of Etheridge he couldn’t keep it out and the hosts were in front. Williams went close on the stroke of half time as Rowe delivered a good cross into the area, Williams got his head on it but his effort was just wide. There was much less to talk about in the second half, or so we thought. Tommy Rowe had another excellent chance as Marquis beat his defenders before squaring the ball to our number 10. Side footing his

effort at goal, it was saved by Chapman. The visitors enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled when it got to the final third. Accrington almost made it 3 as McConville got on the end of a good cross at the far post but his header into the ground bounced back off the woodwork. With time running out Rovers pushed forward. Rowe again was at the heart of it, he set up Marquis but again his first time shot was saved by Chapman. Despite making a couple of good saves, the Accrington goalkeeper had another shocker as he allowed Andy Williams to score on 82 minutes. Good work from Mandeville down the left allowed him to cross for Williams whose first time volley was initially saved by Chapman, however he fumbled the ball and it somehow crossed the line. As momentum was with Darren Ferguson’s side the fourth official announced there would be a further 7 minutes of injury time to play. One minute into the 7, Accrington took the lead and sealed the victory. Chris Eagles crossed the ball into the box and McConville placed a superb volley past Etheridge who stood no chance.

BLADES NEWS2016/17 OPENING DAY WOE FOR BLADES CHE JOINS Chris Wilder’s dreams of a Blades win in his first game as Blades boss were dashed by an impressive first half strike from Jay Spearing. The Bolton midfielder’s volley from outside the box was enough to separate the teams and the Blades suffered an opening day defeat for the third year in succession. Chief Wilder’s first competitive Blades team included all seven of his summer signings in the squad, six starting and one on the bench. Skipper Sharp and Clarke were selected to lead the front line. Bolton’s team saw former Blade Howard start in goal. A total of 4,357 Unitedites made the trip to the Macron Stadium. The opening ten minutes were all about free-kicks into the area from dangerous positions. United repelled two from Spearing and then one from Hussey on eight minutes saw Clarke head wide at the back post. Another Hussey delivery, on 13 minutes,

was across the face of goal but evaded Sharp and Clarke, whilst a neat, quick move involving Brayford, Sharp and Duffy only earned a corner as the Blades looked to get on top. Twice Basham was crowded as he positioned himself into a dangerous position and following a break, Duffy ﬂashed across Howard’s goal. Bolton attempted to use the long throw to their advantage on a couple of occasions and Brayford needed treatment for a head injury after one such launch into the box. It was from another long throw that Bolton opened the scoring on 37 minutes. Wilson’s delivery was halfcleared by Duffy but SPEARING volleyed into the corner from 25 yards. Soon after Madine headed a Spearing free-kick wide but the home side, after having the better of the middle section of the half and taking advantage with a goal, protected Howard well for the remainder of the half. Early in the second half

a 35-yard Fleck effort was blocked and both Hussey and O’Connell put in crosses from the left that put Bolton onto the back foot. The Blades made the better start to the second half and on 56 minutes Howard was forced to push over a Done header after Clarke initially won Hussey’s cross and minutes later Sharp had the ball in the net but he was adjudged offside from Brayford’s pass. There was a frantic pace to the second half and another long throw almost undid United. On 64 minutes Moxey hurled into the box and Pratley got a run on his marker but Long pushed away the free header. Wilder made a double substitution with Adams and Scougall replacing Done and Duffy but a drop in tempo coincided with a lack of chances, at both ends. With around ten minutes to go, and with Bolton already having made their three changes, Pratley was hurt in a challenge with Clarke and was stretchered off. The late pressure was,

expectedly, coming from the Blades. A 30-yard Fleck free-kick was deﬂected wide and the Scotsman had two more shots inside the next 90 seconds but Howard was not tested. Sharp ﬁred over from 20 yards and due to injuries, six minutes of added time was indicated. Bolton were happy to surrender possession to United away from their goal but the visitors were unable to force a late chance, despite a corner in the closing seconds. Che Adams has joined Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee, it has been no secret that the West Midlands club were interested in the 20-year-old. On Monday, Adams travelled to the club to ﬁnalise the move. The forward joined the Blades in November 2014 and went on to score 15 times in 55 appearances. Blades boss Chris Wilder said: “We believe we have got an excellent price and we’ve covered ourselves going forward if Che realises his potential.” The move leaves Wilder’s squad lacking in wide areas, the side struggled down the ﬂanks at the Macron Stadium in Saturday’s defeat. Adams and Stefan Scougall were brought on in place of Mark Duffy and Matt Done to try and change things but to no prevail. The side lacked the pace to trouble a well-structured Bolton side, with Adams having left Wilder will have to turn to the transfer market to inject some speed into his matchday squad. Wilder has said that he feels his squad is not yet complete and that fans could expect a few more signings before the end of the window. The boss revealed this week that the club had failed to acquire Grant Ward, who joined Ipswich Town, and Ryan Kent, who joined Barnsley. Wilder so far has tried to do what other Blade managers have failed to do, sign the divisions best players, but after the showing at Bolton and soon after losing Adams, it is clear that the task of building a side capable of promotion is not yet complete.

WILDER’S BOLTON VERDICT Very disappointed’, was boss Chris Wilder’s verdict on Saturday’s narrow 1-0 loss against Bolton Wanderers in EFL League One. Speaking after the opening day defeat at the Macron Stadium, Wilder remarked: “We’re very disappointed with the result, but there are some encouraging signs about the way we played, particular the ﬁrst 25 minutes or so. “We dictated the game and should have been a couple of goals up. The way Bolton set themselves up showed what they thought of us. “But it is no good getting

in good positions if we don’t show our quality, we got anxious and I don’t want that, our set-piece delivery was another negative, but I’m conﬁdent a number of players will impact games more in the future. “The most important is the result though, it doesn’t matter how encouraged we are with the performance or what other people think, we have got beaten and that always hurts.” The Blades boss added: “We got after the ball and put them under pressure, but Jay (Spearing) showed his quality with the

goal he scored, which ultimately proved to be the difference. “They want to play a certain way, we want to be different, but they go home the happier club, the happier fans and Phil (Parkinson) will be delighted to have won

OWLS NEWS2016/17 LEES OWLS OFF TO A FLYING START CAPTAIN EXTENDS CONTRACT The Owls saw their new Championship season underway with a deserved win against Aston Villa. In truth, the contest could have gone either way as Wednesday dominated the first half and Villa edged much of the second – but the hosts had the final say with a late strike from Fernando Forestieri. The opening quarter saw the Owls on top, playing some delightful football in all areas of the pitch. Right from the back and through the thirds, Wednesday were sublime, with the Villa rearguard under the cosh. Steven Fletcher almost illuminated a buoyant Hillsborough with an overhead kick that rolled the wrong side of the post, before the Owls were dealt a blow midway the first half. New recruit Fletcher, who looked sharp and

lively, clashed heads with Tommy Elphick and after lengthy treatment, the Scot was forced out of the action. The Owls stayed in the driving seat, though, and Forestieri had a smart free kick deflected just wide ten minutes before the break. The Italian almost caught the visitors out seconds after the restart, forcing Pierluigi Gollini into a scrambling near post save. Villa then enjoyed their most productive spell of the game and Rudy Gestede’s header brought a flying Keiren Westwood save. Ashley Westwood let fly moments later and was inches off target, before new signing Ross McCormack thundered another header just wide of the upright. At the other end, Gollini came out on top following another

duel with Forestieri as the Owls rallied for the closing stages. But it was McCormack who almost stole it for Villa, thwarted only by a ﬁne save from Westwood, who darted off his line to snuff out the danger. And that left talisman Forestieri to seal the

Tom Lees was impressed by the ambitions of the Owls having signed a new ﬁve-year contract at Hillsborough.
