SHEFFIELD SHORT-LISTED TO HOST GREAT EXHIBITION OF NORTH Sheffield has been shortlisted to host the Great Exhibition of the North in Summer 2018.

Nine bids were submitted on the 30 June and four towns and cities have been selected to go through to the next stage by the Great Exhibition Board, that has representatives from the arts, culture and design sectors, and is chaired by Sir Gary Verity CEO of Welcome to Yorkshire.

when each city will play host to a visit from the Board in August and then called for an interview in Leeds.

The Board will then report to the new Minister for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock and new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley, and the winning venue will be announced in the Autumn.

The Government announced in April this year its desire for a Great Exhibition of the North and that

there would be £5m funding to support the host venue to stage the planned activities. The exhibition will showcase a celebration of the great art, culture, creative industry, innovation and design from the north of England.

The Sheffield Culture Consortium led Sheffield’s bid on behalf of Sheffield City Region.

The two bid leaders were Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Cultural Engagement at The University of Sheffield and Chair of

the Culture Consortium, and Kim Streets, CEO of Museums Sheffield.

Vanessa said: “We are proud that Sheffield City Region has been shortlisted in our Year of Making. We would not have been able to do this without the tremendous support of the creative industries and businesses of our great region.

“Sheffield will demonstrate how we are the gateway to the North and we will work across cities and towns to help shape the future in art, design, culture

and future technology.

I would to thank all my colleagues in the Culture Consortium and the bid writing team for getting us on the dance floor.”

The Sheffield City Region bid has had testimonials of support by organisations and investors in the city region, and has already secured a pledge of £250,000 from Sheffield BID. The bid has support from all sectors and the team is determined to bring the Great Exhibition of the North to this region, as they believe it has the capability, creativity, environment and the right attitude to deliver a true celebration of the north.

MAYOR TO FUNDRAISE FOR THE SICK CHILDREN’S TRUST AS THANKYOU The newly elected mayor of Biddulph has pledged to raise money for The Sick Children’s Trust, the charity which offered her family a ‘Home from Home’ in their darkest days.

Jill Salt, 34, has named The Sick Children’s Trust, a charity that provides free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation to families with sick children in hospital, as one of her six chosen charities over the next 12 months as a thank you for the support her family received while her son was in hospital.

In September 2012, Jill’s youngest son Sam was diagnosed with kidney stones just a few days before his third birthday which meant he was unable to pass urine. He could not be treated locally as he needed specialist treatment, so he was rushed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital in an ambulance, over 50 miles away from home. Sam underwent six operations over the next 18 months to try to remove the stones that were blocking his tubes, and to replace and remove tubes to help him urinate. Jill’s family were able to stay just a lift ride away from Sam at one of The Sick Children’s Trust’s ‘Homes from Home’, Treetop House at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Jill, who has another son who was five years old at the time, says: “It’s so awful for your whole family when your child is sick, without having to worry about things like where you and your children are going to stay and how you are going to eat. We were over 50 miles from home, in an unfamiliar city with nothing but a purse and a phone. Staying in Treetop House helped to relieve some of that worry so that we could focus on Sam – it gave us a place to sleep, eat and rest, whilst never being more than a moment away from our son.

“Over the next 12 months I will be doing lots of things to raise money – I have already held a variety show which raised £450, and will be running a tombola, holding a ball and completing fun-runs. We will always be grateful for the support Treetop House provided and this is one way to give back to The Sick Children’s Trust while also raising awareness of their work within my community. Biddulph has a fantastic community which I am proud to be a part of, and I know that they will be very generous for such a valuable cause.”

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the UK, supporting around 4,000 families per year. While accommodation is free for families, it costs the charity £30 per night to support a family whose child is in hospital and it relies entirely on voluntary donations to meet this cost.

Treetop House Manager, Ann Wyatt, says: “We really appreciate Jill choosing us as one of her nominated charities. The money she raises will make a real difference to other families going through the most difficult of times. It means so much to us when the families we support remember us and the work we do and it is a testament to how much they value our care. I’m sure Jill will also be able to raise much-needed awareness of the charity, which is so important because we find that many families don’t know about The Sick Children’s Trust until they need us.”

Treetop House has been running for 15 years and is one of two ‘Homes from Home’ The Sick Children’s Trust operates in Sheffield, alongside Magnolia House, which opened in 2013. As well as rooms for families, each house has a fully equipped kitchen and dining area as well as playrooms and laundry facilities.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE JUNIOR ROAD SAFETY OFFICERS WIN COMPETITION School pupils from across South Yorkshire have been recognised by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership for their role as road safety ambassadors.

Pupils from 6 primary schools have received accolades for being successful Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO).

The JRSO scheme encourages pupils, nominated by teachers and peers, to use creative ways to promote road safety in their school. The JRSOs organised school assemblies, displayed posters and arranged road safety competitions.

Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their fellow pupils by addressing road safety issues and become a point of contact within the school for the promotion of road safety. The Safer Roads Partnership and local authority road safety teams support the JRSOs by providing

information and advice on a regular basis.

Teachers and school staff also assisted the JRSO’s where necessary.

JRSO winners from each local authority area in South Yorkshire received a bag of road safety goodies.

Joanne Wehrle, the Safer Roads Education Manager, said, “The JRSO scheme aims to give the children a good grounding in road safety education as they prepare to become more independent travellers - the point at which many children begin to travel independently for the first time. The scheme also provides young people taking part with a sense of achievement and greater confidence.

“All the JRSOs have done an amazing job in helping us to send out important road safety messages to all pupils in school. We could not

and dilapidated very quickly when customers can no longer gain reasonable access. In taking this short-sighted ‘easy option’ method of raising revenue, the Council is merely initiating tomorrow’s problem of derelict graffiti-strewn urban shopping centres.”

“Whilst motorists are viewed as the Council’s ‘cash-cow’, Council officials need to pause and consider the knock-on effects of their parking policies on retailers in areas like Broomhill and Hillsborough, whose commercial viability is hanging by a thread.”

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has expressed dismay at the proposed 40 per cent hike in Sheffield’s on-street parking charges in areas outside the city centre. This will hit traders who are already struggling to survive and will serve only to drive more customers into the hands of the big supermarkets and shopping malls, where parking is plentiful and free.

FSB’s South Yorkshire Chairman Andrew Flower commented: “The Council has once again showed its disregard for the small independent shop-owners who were once the backbone of Sheffield’s retail economy. Having been driven out of the town centre by a combination of high rents and the Council’s transport policies, it seems the Council is now intent on finishing them off altogether.

“There is a plethora of shop premises around the city lying empty and derelict. This air of abandonment spreads like a contagion and, once it starts, whole areas can become run down

PENSIONS SHOCK FOR NEW FLAT-RATE PAYMENT SCHEME Just one in three workers will receive the full £148 flat-rate state pension next year — far fewer than first estimated, it has been has revealed.

Government figures imply 100,000 fewer than expected will get the maximum in the first ten years of the new deal. This includes an estimated 30,000 people who it was thought would qualify in the first year but will now get far less. In total, just 222,000 of the roughly 600,000 people who will hit state pension age in the 12 months from April 2016 can claim the full amount.

It is a new blow to a generation of savers who were told everyone would get the flat-rate pension if they had paid their National Insurance contributions.

Malcolm McLean, senior consultant at actuarial firm Barnett Waddingham, says: ‘Some politicians, who should have known better, said we would have a more generous and simpler flat-rate pension scheme. Clearly, the new deal is neither of those things, at least not in the early years. It is unfortunate this has not been properly explained and expectations have been raised that can’t be fulfilled. Many of the people affected will be extremely disappointed. The fact is it will take ten or maybe even 20 years for things to even out and for most pensioners to receive the full flat-rate pension.’

The new state pension was unveiled as a way of ending the unfairness and complexity of the current system. The Government promised that anyone who had 35 years of National Insurance contributions would qualify for the full £148.

Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said: ‘The single-tier pension will mean people have certainty in what they can expect from the State. Thirty-five years’ worth of National Insurance contributions will mean a full basic state pension.’

However, Money Mail reported in May last year this would not be the case and hundreds of thousands would lose out.

The problem generally affects employees, who, at some point in their working life, opted out of receiving extra benefits such as the state second pension. In exchange, they were allowed to pay a reduced rate of National Insurance. This was called contracting out. Typically, they had generous final salary pensions. However, some workers in stock market-linked company pensions were also encouraged to contract out.Now the Government has decided because they paid lower NI contributions and are likely to have built up extra pension elsewhere, they should lose some of their new state pension.

Following the Money Mail probe, former pensions minister Steve Webb apologised and admitted only 42 pc of those retiring in the first year of the flat-rate pension would get the full payment.

This data in June last year projected the number of pensioners who would qualify for the full amount every year until 2040. It revealed that only from 2018 would more than half of new pensioners receive the full amount. But current pensions minister Baroness Ros Altmann has revealed this estimate was too high.

Money Mail have seen Department for Work and Pensions figures which show just 37 per cent will be able to claim the full amount, meaning 30,000 more than first thought will not.

In the third year of the new state pension, the Government had estimated 52 pc of savers would qualify for £148 a week.

Now it says the figure will be just 46 per cent, meaning an extra 36,000 who retire from April 2018 will not get the higher rate. In total, between 2016 and 2026, 102,000 extra savers will miss out.

There is some good news for those in their 50s, however. Initial estimates of those who would claim the full amount are too low and 10,000-15,000 a year more may now qualify. But by 2060, an estimated one in seven retiring that year still won’t qualify for the full amount.

Experts said the miscalculation may be due to the fiendish complexity involved

in working out who is entitled. Initially, it was thought the deduction for contractedout years would only equal those in which the reduced rate of NI had been paid. So someone who worked 35 years but contracted out for five would be left with 30 years of full contributions. And someone who had contracted out for five years, but had 40 years of full-rate contributions, could still claim the full amount. But it has emerged this is not the case. Instead, the Government is assuming a certain amount of pension has been built up with the money that would have paid the extra NI contribution. It is then using a set of assumptions to deduct this from the full state pension. Many in their early 60s have found they will get far less than expected.Some have the 35 full years of NI contributions but face deductions to their state pension despite contracting out only briefly. The DWP seems to be assuming that if someone contracted out, they did so for the rest of their career. It says those who contracted out benefited from lower NI payments and could make provision for their retirement elsewhere.

Tom McPhail, head of pensions research at investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown, says: ‘The link between the National Insurance contributions people pay into the system and their impact on the new flat-rate state pension entitlement appears to be very tenuous.’

A DWP spokesman says: ‘We revise these figures each year to reflect latest assumptions. However, what people get from their state pension does not give the full picture. People who spent time contracted-out either paid NI contributions at a lower rate, or some of the NI contributions they paid were used to contribute to a private pension, which they will also benefit from when they retire.

Both state and private pensions need to be taken into account.’

MERCURY/STONES CLUBLAND AWARDS VOTING IS NOW OPEN!!!

We are delighted to announce that voting for the 2016 Clubland Awards is now open – voting forms are in this week’s issue of the Mercury and will appear online via our website from this Friday (5th).

We will also be re-introducing the voting box system for 2016 with boxes placed at many of the region’s clubs, with one voting slip being drawn from each box to win a pair of tickets for the awards night later in the year. Details of venues that voting boxes will be available at will be published in the near future.

The categories are: Best Male Vocalist (Pocket Rocket 2015) Best Female Vocalist (Jay Danielle 2015) Best Duo/Trio (Brotherhood 2015) Best Live Band (Diversify 2015) Best All Round Entertainer (Can You Feel It 2015) Best Newcomer (O’Brien Hesson 2015) No doubt many of last year’s

award holders will be trying hard to win your votes and hold on to their title – but equally it is always a delight to see new winners emerging – whether it be a Clubland regular who has been working the circuit for years, or a new face that has found popularity among our readers!

And as always, the Mercury Award for Services to Clubland – which is awarded on the basis of feedback from clubs, agents and other artists and reflects the achievements of one of the elder statesmen of our industry who may have moved on to greater things but have never forgotten their roots or where they learned their art! Previous winners have included Paul Shane, Charlie Williams, John Parr, and many others who began their career in the pubs and clubs around this area – something that very few who look for instant fame and fortune on the X Factor and similar shows can claim on their CV! We are beginning to see a resurgence in the number of venues offering live music –

particularly since the relaxation of licensing regulations – and more and more younger faces seem to be taking the opportunity to demonstrate their talents! Sadly even since last year’s awards we have lost a couple of the more traditional venues – but nevertheless the trend suggests that many of our pubs locally are looking towards providing a platform for live entertainment again!

LOCAL COMEDIAN MAKES IT TO THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE BBC RADIO NEW COMEDY AWARD 2016 Sheffield based comedian Sean Morley has been announced as a semi-finalist in the BBC Radio New Comedy Award 2016. He will go up against 11 other semifinalists at Edinburgh Festival Fringe on Sunday 7th August, for a place in the live final.

The BBC Radio New Comedy Award is the BBC’s annual, nationwide search for the best upand-coming talent and previous winners and finalists include Peter Kay, Russell Howard, Alan Carr, Sarah Millican, Lee Mack and Joe Lycett.

Sean took to the stage during the heats at Manchester Comedy Store on Tuesday 21st June, and impressed the judging panel including BBC Comedy executive producer Rebecca Papworth, editor of comedy website Chortle Steve Bennett, and comedian Kerry Godliman.

He says, “Since my success I have been promoted at work and have increased by friend count by six! I have a newfound respect for myself and treat my body

with greater care than ever - I realise now I am a fragile temple, moments from immediate and inexorable collapse.”

Sean is one of 12 who made it through to the semi-finals after a total of 60 acts competed in six regional heats across London, Manchester and Cardiff last month. The other semi-finalists include Sindu Vee, Alex Mahoney, Tom Taylor, George Lewis, Jethro Bradley, Lindsay Santoro, Catherine Bohart, Micheal Odewale, Joe Jacobs, Ian Lane and Lauren Pattison.

Following two semi-finals on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August (broadcast on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th August at 11pm, BBC Radio 4 Extra) at the BBC hub at Edinburgh Fringe, George Heriot’s School, the judging panel will take six acts through to the final (broadcast live on Sunday 14th August at 6.15pm, BBC Radio 4).

The winner will take home £1000, a 15 minute script commission from BBC Radio Comedy and will be mentored by the in-house comedy department.

SHEFFIELD ROCK GIANTS BRING ME THE HORIZON JOINED BY DON BRONCO AND BASEMENT FOR HOMETOWN ARENA SHOW The latest home grown band to take to the Sheffield Arena stage are Sheffield rockers Bring Me The Horizon who will perform their biggest hometown gig to date on Sunday 6th November 2016.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

A week of contrasting fortunes this week. Whilst wandering around a local club water last week, an angler told me that he had several early morning tench to well over 5lb, and as I love catching tench (but rarely fish for them) I thought I’d put in a shift…

I know tench love hemp and corn, so I prepared a couple of pints of sticky mixture well in advance to get the sugars flowing, and arrived at the lake before first light to try and spot some tincas. I couldn’t see any signs of fizzing or cloudy water, despite watching the water for at least half an hour, so I opted to set up adjacent to some lily pads where I thought fish may lie. A small crystal float was set up, baited with a single grain of corn, and swung out underarm to settle nicely against a deep, green pad. A small amount of freebies over the top, and I sat back to wait. And wait. And wait… I had two bites all day, one from a bream, the other I missed! I lasted about eight hours before retiring hurt, and on leaving, spoke to another angler who also stated he had caught next to nothing! A bad day for both of us, on a lake I am really struggling to get to grips with… but I will!

Things got better later in the week, I added more corn and hemp to the remainder of the bait from the earlier session, and by the time I got to the bank for my next visit, it was lovely and gooey! I’ve invested the miserly sum of 99p on a gardening scoop from high street giant Wilkinson’s, which is the ideal implement with which to scoop and spread sticky particles, pellets and other freebies close in without getting covered in it; I definitely recommend it! After watching the water as usual, there were fish showing all over the lake, so I just chose a comfortable peg and set up.

It’s a club water, with a glut of rules, which means that carpers have to adapt their tactics to fish within the guidelines. A single rod is all that is allowed, and with fish to well over 15lb, it’s a great opportunity to break out the Sonik S3 Tri-tip, and twin it with

a Sonik 6000fs reel to give an outfit with plenty of grunt, but still make fishing fun, especially when catching carp at point blank range under the rod tip.

This particular S3 rod can be fished at three differing test curves between 1.5-2lb and offers a real ‘system’to cover a variety of situations when hunting specimen fish. A scoop of corn and hemp mix was loosely spread in the margins, and I tackled up with Vardis tungsten tubing, a lead clip arrangement, a heavy lead, and a very short four inch Guru QM1 mono hooklink and size 10 hook (rules). The idea was to fish a very slack line, using the tungsten tubing to pin the rig down, and use the heavy weight to prick the hook home causing the fish to bolt off.

A double corn hookbait was lowered into the swim, the baitrunner set, the bobbin clipped on, and I sat well back from the edge to avoid spooking any fish.

Minutes later, after watching wafting tails over the bait, the bobbin jumped, the baitrunner spun, and the first fish was on! For some reason, the carp in this water fight like stink, and a chunky double took almost ten exciting minutes to subdue; whilst playing the fish in deeper water, I could see several other carp rooting up the particle mixture, and they were even swimming around my sunken landing net to get to it…unbelievable! My first fish was safely returned in the next peg, and the rig quickly reset with a small amount of particle dropped over the top. Once again, within fifteen minutes, I’d had another fish, and my session went on in a similar manner for around five hours, during which time I landed seventeen doubles to over 15lb, and lost two further fish, resulting in more than 200lb of fish banked; a real red letter day indeed!

Every angler loves an audience, especially when playing a decent fish, and I’m no different, so when a family with a young daughter stopped to watch whilst I tussled with a fish, I offered the rod to the youngster. With a steadying hand, the young lady helped me to land a fine mirror of around 12lb, and was suitably pleased when I explained that the hook mark would benefit from treatment, then showed her how to carefully fold the fins before returning the fish to the water using the weigh sling. Mum, dad and daughter then stayed to discuss fishing, and after describing some of the things you can

see bankside, and why anglers fish, the gentleman discussed buying a cheap rod to fish from the pier on holiday with the family in tow to see how they got on. Hopefully, they will become lifelong anglers, and join our happy band, and if they do, then all it took was a few minutes of advice; seems like time well spent to me, and I hope they enjoy their new found hobby!

CLARKE SIGNS AT THE LANE

Chris Wilder has added the experienced striker Leon Clarke to his squad as the Blades prepare to kick off at Bolton on Saturday afternoon.

The 31-year-old signs a three-year deal at Sheffield United after the club agreed an undisclosed fee with Bury for the player’s services. The ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward will bring much needed strength and power to the Blades’ attack in the forthcoming season. Clarke made his unofficial debut in front of 6,153 in attendance at the Lane as the Blades came up against Championship promotion hopefuls, Derby County. Wilder has made it no secret that the summer recruitment drive is not over, with the Blades being linked heavily with a move for the ex-Chesterfield midfielder, Sam Morsy.

Abdi joined Wednesday last week from Watford alongside Daniel Pudil, who made the permanent switch to Hillsborough following successful last year’s loan stint.

The head coach added: “These are two players I have wanted since the beginning.

“They are both hard working for the team which is exactly

the sort of player we want at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Daniel was here last season it’s easier for him to learn the process.

Club acquire non league gem after impressive trial.

Rovers have today swooped to sign non-league protégé Alfie Beestin on an initial one year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

The 18 year old joins Rovers having impressed on trial from Tadcaster Albion of the Evo-Stik Division One North.

Rotherham United skipper Lee Frecklington is relishing the return of Championship football this weekend ahead of the opening day showdown with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The midfielder has the armband once again ahead of the new campaign and will be vying for a place in Alan Stubbs’ first starting 11.

Saturday’s visitors to AESSEAL New York Stadium have been busy in recent weeks, with new owners quickly followed by a new manager in Italian Walter Zenga.

“We’ve played Wolves a few times and they are a good side,” Frecklington said.

“We’ve played them a lot in recent years and there are usually lots of goals, apart from the game last year, but they are a good Championship club, like they all are.

“We are pleased our first game is at home and it will hopefully be a good start for us.”

Trips to Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion are lying in wait on the back of Saturday’s curtain raiser, but while Frecklington admits his side have a tough start, he is

thoroughly looking forward to the challenge.

“There is no bigger thing than playing at Premier League grounds such as Villa Park and although it’s going to be difficult, we will be doing all we can to go there and get a result,” he added.
