TRAMLINES WEEKEND IS FINALLY HERE Tramlines returns from Friday 22 – Sunday 24 July 2016.

Now in its eighth year, Tramlines is the UK’s biggest inner-city music festival. In 2015, it attracted over 100,000 people as the festival took over the entire city centre across four outdoor stages and 18 venues. Tramlines gives festival-goers a chance to see established artists alongside upand-coming acts, across numerous outdoor stages, venues and themed trails that will take you to every corner of the city.

The festival features artists from a wide range of musical genres. Past events have included performances from

Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, The Charlatans, Sister Sledge, The Cribs, Katy B, alt-J, the xx, AlunaGeorge, Roots Manuva, Ms Dynamite, Slaves, Sugarhill Gang, Echo and the Bunnymen, Toddla T and Annie Mac, The Mystery Jets, Lianne La Havas, The Selecter, Rolo Tomassi, Darwin Deez, Heaven 17, The Futureheads, Ash and many more. With the enormous diversity of music and activities on offer, and from £42 for a Full Weekend pass, it is amazing value for money. The festival site (Sheffield) is easily reached by the UK road and rail networks.

There’s no on-site

camping but there’s plenty of affordable accommodation in the city centre that’s right within the festival site!

Venues on the festival circuit include the o2 Academy, the Leadmill, The Night Kitchen, the Cathedral, Foundry, Fusion, and The Octagon Centre, The Harley, Hope Works, City Hall, Queens Social Club and Yellow Arch Studios.

Tramlines has teamed up with official travel partner Supertram to offer discounted Tramlines ‘Festival Explorer’ tram tickets at £3 per day.

Tickets can be purchased from the wristband exchange or on board the tram.

Tramlines 2016 has partnered with Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.

Shelter’s team will be spending the weekend at the Folk Forest, where they’ll be putting on a variety of activities.

It was a role that made Steele the theatre’s all-time record breaking performer, having headlined more performances than any other star in the history of the Palladium. summer holiday driving As we print this week’s Mercury, we are sitting in temperatures in excess of 30 degrees - so it seemed a good idea to list our top tips for problem-free holiday motoring!

The holiday season can mean high temperatures, increased stress levels, and extra demands on your car – so here’s our advice to help with the bigger challenges of summer driving.

Wet or lost key fobs It’s easy to lose your car keys in the sand, or ruin your remote control with water by accidentally taking the fob for a swim.

Keep your keys safe and dry and check your handbook – on most cars, there’s an alternative way to open the doors that you can use if the remote stopped working. If you do need a replacement car key or key fob, call Key Assist on 0800 048 2800. Our specialist technicians will come to you wherever you are – we’re a fully mobile service operating nationwide.

• Don’t drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal before driving Don’t stop for a nap on the hard shoulder, and make sure you check parking restrictions before putting your head down at a motorway service area as you could get a ticket for overstaying your welcome.

Punctures If your tyres are already damaged or they’re at the wrong pressure, the higher temperatures of summer will increase the risk of a blowout.

Make sure you check tyres regularly – for condition and pressures – and increase pressures to suit extra loads, as advised in your handbook. Check caravan tyres too, and replace those that show any signs of cracking in the sidewall or tread grooves.

Loose chippings Roads repaired with tar and loose chippings are a common sight in the summer but they can cause cracked headlamps and windscreens, and damage paintwork if you’re not careful. Stick to any temporary speed limit that’s been put in place and keep your distance from the car in front.

Overheating High temperatures can aggravate cooling system problems too. It’s important to check the coolant and cooling system regularly to avoid overheating.

Glare Dazzle from the sun causes lots of accidents but you can reduce the effect by keeping your windscreen nice and clean, and by replacing worn or damaged windscreen wipers. It pays to keep a clean pair of sunglasses in your car year-round but avoid lenses that darken in strong sunlight.

Driving tired If you feel tired, stop and take a short nap (up to 15 minutes) or drink two cups of strong coffee.

It’s best to avoid getting tired in the first place if you can. These tips can help: • Include a 20-minute break in journeys of more than 3 hours • On longer trips, take a break every couple of hours • You’re better off taking several short (at least 20 minutes) stops than one long one

Hayfever If your hayfever is particularly bad, it’s best to get someone else to drive if you can. Also: • Make sure any medication you’re taking doesn’t cause drowsiness • Close windows and air vents to reduce pollen grains in the car • Clean mats and carpets regularly to get rid of dust • Keep tissues close to hand • Wear sunglasses to block out bright sunlight Slow down and drop back if you feel you’re about to sneeze – at 70mph you’ll lose vision for up to 100m

Fire If you’re a smoker, don’t just throw your cigarette out of the window when you’ve finished it. Verges and embankments can become bone-dry and a smouldering cigarette may be enough to ignite roadside grass.

Avoid a breakdown this summer • Slow down if you come across a spillage – if you hit a bale of straw at speed you will damage your car • Don’t park in a gateway or passing place – they are farmers’ field access points • Drive extra carefully after rain, which can turn dry mud into a skid pan

councils continue support for voluntary libraries Library users are being asked to complete a survey to help inform the future support package given by Sheffield City Council to communityled libraries run by volunteers.

The authority remains committed to providing support once the current arrangements, agreed in 2014, come to an end next March.

In Sheffield there are 28 libraries, 16 of which are run by volunteers.

Responsibilities changed hands in 2014 when volunteers stepped in after budget cuts meant Sheffield City Council could no longer afford to run all branches.

This meant all libraries in Sheffield have remained open.

Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “Libraries are fantastic places and provide many benefits for hundreds of thousands of people in Sheffield every year. I am absolutely committed to helping them develop in the future.

“In the near future, we will be setting out a support package for communityled libraries run by volunteers. This will give them the stability and security they need to help them develop into stronger organisations that can achieve even more

for their communities.

“There are no plans to change the current mix of 12 council run libraries and 16 community-led ones. We’re not revisiting the decision made in 2014 which led to some libraries transferring hands from the council to volunteers and I don’t anticipate any closures.

“This review is about looking positively to the future and thinking about the type of services we want to see in our libraries.

The volunteers, and our own staff, have put a huge amount into running the libraries and I want to thank them all for their continued work that continues to make such a huge difference to our communities”.

The current support for community-led libraries – agreed up to March 2017 – includes maintaining the library buildings and associated costs in five ‘co-delivered’ branches. Eleven ‘associate’ libraries receive a support package worth £262,000 per year (split across the branches) to cover running costs.

The council’s work to define the future support includes gathering information from the community-led branches, carrying out interviews with library volunteers and running a survey of library

users. This will inform a Cabinet report in the autumn, where a decision will be made about the precise details of the future support package and the library services that are offered.

Bob Mynors from STAND, the Stannington and District Library Group, said: “Stannington Library is pleased with Sheffield City Council’s commitment to backing the community-led libraries in the city.

“Its package of financial and practical support will be vital to the continued success of all the volunteers who are keeping these libraries open and working for the people of Sheffield.”

The co-delivered libraries are: Broomhill, Burngreave, Park, Southey and Woodhouse.

The associate libraries are: Ecclesfield, Frecheville, Gleadless, Greenhill, Jordanthorpe, Newfield Green, Stannington, Tinsley, Totley, Upperthorpe and Walkley.

MERCURYJOBS&LEGAL FLEXIBLE HOURS STILL A PROBLEM The Hire Me My Way campaign aims to nearly treble the number of jobs advertised with flexible options for location or hours by 2020.

Less than 9% of vacancies for decently paid jobs in the UK offer flexible working, according to research that claims the lack of such options is keeping millions of people in dead-end jobs or shut out from the labour market.

Analysis of more than 5m job adverts found little progress in the past year on offering more flexible options to jobseekers, despite warnings to employers who face skills shortages that they are failing to tap into a large pool of potential workers. The findings have been published as part of a campaign to encourage employers to make more jobs available to people who need or want to work part-time or flexibly, such as doing some work from home.

The Hire Me My Way campaign aims to nearly treble the number of jobs advertised with flexible options for location or hours by 2020. It defines quality jobs as those with full-time equivalent salaries of at least £20,000.

tive Emma Stewart said the campaign tapped into the needs of those who want to work but have caring responsibilities for children or older relatives.

“The lack of flexible hiring in the UK affects everyone searching for such jobs. Transform hiring, and you have the potential to bring tangible change to millions of families unable to raise their earnings or progress their careers, because they are trapped by their need for flexibility.”

The campaign, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, is also intended to tackle skills shortages as well as Britain’s poor productivity by getting more people into jobs that suit their skills. It follows recent figures showing almost one in three workers are either overqualified or underqualified for their jobs. Lynn Rattigan of consultancy firm EY, said out-of-date employers were missing out on a huge pool of experienced workers simply because they failed to mention on their job advertisements that they would be open to flexibility.

She added: “The needs of the UK’s workforce are changing rapidly and employers need to keep up; not only to support

their own business growth, but the competitiveness of the UK economy.”

The campaigners said there were currently 351,000 quality job vacancies that offer flexible options as well as a decent salary. They added that they want that number to hit 1m by the end of the decade.

Timewise’s annual flexible jobs index found 8.7% of job vacancies mentioned a degree of flexibility and offered a salary deemed high enough to live on. That was up only marginally on 6.2% a year ago. It follows a warning last week that employers must offer more practical support to help older workers juggle work with increasing carer responsibilities. The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) said in an ageing population more people were becoming carers to family members. But at the same time, fewer young people were entering the labour market and so Britain’s employers were increasingly reliant on older workers to increase productivity. About 30% of the UK workforce is over 50, compared with 20% in the 1990s, the CIPD said.

TRAMLINES 2016 VITAL INFO Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner-city music festival, will turn Sheffield into a huge festival site this weekend.

With open-air stages, late nightclubs, impromptu street performances and repurposed spaces dotted throughout the city, it’s easy to become overwhelmed.

We’ve compiled all the vital information you need for a safe and successful festival experience.

Tickets Full weekend Tramlines tickets are still available while stocks last. Due to popular demand we’ve made a limited number of day tickets available along with Saturday night tickets for £20. Please go online to purchase tickets.

Wristbands Tramlines tickets must be exchanged for a wristband before entry to any venue or stage. Your wristband can only be issued from the wristband exchange point selected at the time of booking. All tickets bought from Party for the

People, Ticket Arena, Skiddle or Festiticket and all Carers Passes can only be collected from Sheffield City Hall.

ALL PHYSICAL TICKETS MUST BE EXCHANGED AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL. Opening times for the 3 wristband exchanges: City Hall Thurs 21st July: 4pm – 9pm Friday 22nd July: 12pm – 11pm Saturday 23rd July: 11am – 11pm Sunday 24th July: 12pm – 5pm Ponderosa (Main Stage) Friday 22nd July: 4pm – 9.30pm Saturday 23rd July: 11am – 9.30pm Sunday 24th July: 12pm – 8pm Folk Forest Saturday 23rd July: 11.30am – 7pm Sunday 24th July: 11.30am – 7pm

Wristbands can only be collected in person. You won’t be able to collect wristbands on behalf of anyone else, even if you bought their tickets for them.

You will have to wear your wristband.

Day wristbands do not need to be collected on the specific day of the ticket. For example, a Saturday wristband can be collected on Friday.

For more ticket and wristband information including the conditions of entry please visit www.tramlines.org.uk/ information Travel Unfortunately there is no parking available at the Main Stage (Ponderosa Park) and any cars found illegally parked will be towed.

We recommend that you use the Supertram who have produced a festival explorer day ticket for £3 that allows unlimited travel within the festival area (City Centre to Nunnery Square,

Granville Road and Infirmary Road). These tickets can be purchased from the wristband exchange points.

If you’re driving into Sheffield from out of town, please use the Supertram’s Park and Ride scheme.

Walking Route The Main Stage at Ponderosa Park is a short walk from the city centre. There is a clearly signposted route from the city centre and from the Shalesmoor tram stop.

Tramlines have produced a handy video that shows the entire walking route that can be viewed online. #TramlinesTraffic Please use this hashtag on Twitter to find out which venues have reached capacity.

As always, if you’re keen to see a particular artist, make sure you leave plenty of time to into the stage or venue.

Free programmes can be found at the wristband exchanges or you can view it online Please use this page to check on any cancellations or changes in performance times Safety Staying safe at Tramlines is important. Make sure you keep hydrated with plenty of water and bring suitable clothes for wet weather.

Tramlines has a zero tolerance policy towards illegal drugs

and ‘legal highs’ with CCTV surveillance operated in the main stage. Our main stage is located in a residential area; make sure that this is respected when leaving, particularly at night.

Tramlines also operate a zero tolerance towards discrimination of any kind.

If you experience or witness something that you feel is inappropriate, make sure you alert a steward or onsite security guard.

Well, after a week in the sun, watching other people fish, I’ve been back on the banks at last, and I’ve had some new tackle to play with!

A new light lure combo from Sonik Sports has been the highlight of my week, a new Light Tec spinning rod, casting 2-8g, and an AVX 3000 reel arrived, which I’ve loaded with braid, added a fluorocarbon leader, and then set off for the local cut with a few tiny lures and jigheads in search of perch. If you haven’t tried this relatively new style of fishing, I suggest you do; there are plenty of top quality ‘how to’ videos by anglers who are ‘Big in Da Game’ from which you can learn almost everything you need to enjoy a lightweight set up which offers lots of fun as you wander miles of bankside. The only things the videos will not give you, is an exact location of the fish… but that’s where the fun lies… finding them in the most unexpected of places!

I targeted the very end of a branch of my local canal, an area where the water runs out, the trees overhang, and the depth is less than two feet.

Sounds as though it would be almost impossible to catch fish, but with such finesse, it’s a simple task to drop the tiniest of lures right in the edge, right under the rod tip, and just twitch it along the bottom to explore the area. Perch love cover, every angler knows that, and with either a dinky jighead, or a dropshot weight, it’s easy to maintain position between reeds, next to lilies, or even between the branches or an underwater obstacle… all places where perch love to hide.

A 2g jighead with a super sharp hook supported a bubblegum pink Rapture Slurp lure, which I’d trimmed to fit the hook, which was gently cast underarm along the bank, and the lure tweaked back along the brickwork of the canalside. Bump!

A fish within seconds! A nice little perch of around 4oz was quickly followed by several more before it was time to move. Within an area of a

few square metres, I’d picked off nearly a dozen perch, fish I would perhaps have missed using other tactics, so it was time to move to the lock gates and try the deeper water. More success; another half a dozen perch were swung to hand, before I hit something slightly bigger. This one pulled a bit more, and despite hoping it was a bigger perch, it turned out to be a tiny pike which put a bend in the rod as it tried to shake the hook.

I had a couple of hours exploring the canal basin, finding perch in almost every nook and cranny, but most importantly, it was fun, and that is what fishing should be about.

I’ve also had a few hours on the Derbyshire Derwent, my first river session of the season, and I was hoping for a barbel. I tend to fish simple tactics, a suitable lead, a long fluorocarbon hoolink, a good strong Vardis hook, and a decent bait; in this case, a Mainline Baits Hybrid bottom bait wrapped in a generous helping of paste. I’d got a pint or two of hemp, and a bag of sweetcorn with me, so used the baitdropper to get the bait down on the river bed. I left the swim for an hour before casting out, and sat back to wait for the rod tip to hoop over in that classic barbel bite. It didn’t happen. I sat in my first swim for around four hours, before deciding to move upstream to what is basically a ‘banker’ swim…

Putting a load of bait in hadn’t worked, so this time it was hook baits only, and both were dropped just out of the flow in a likely crease, and left to settle. I find watching the rod tips waving gently in the flow to be extremely therapeutic, and I love trying to decipher exactly what is happening below the surface. A slow pull may be a crayfish, a sharp tug a stick on the line, and a heavy nod could be weed; as an angler, the trick is to try and analyse the indication, because it may be a fish after all!

Thirty minutes in the new swim, and a proper bite registered. I find that there is rarely a need to strike at barbel bites, so just grabbed the rod and lifted into the fish which kited into midstream.

combined with the S3 specialist rod did the job within a few minutes, and a pristine barbel of about 7lb was safely netted. Unfortunately, it proved to be the only bite of the day on a falling river, but I was pleased, it was a fish after all, and that’s why we go fishing! It finished my week off nicely, I’d had two successful sessions, blooded new kit, and enjoyed myself… what more could I ask for?

The Blades’ pre-season campaign was stepped up another gear by Chris Wilder in the past week, the team jetted off to La Manga on a visit which included a 4-1 victory of a Murcia Representative XI. For the Blades’ first goal, John Fleck, making his debut for Sheffield United, poked the ball through to Matt Done who finished from a tight angle. Done completed his second brace of preseason by capitalising on a defensive mistake to fire into the bottom corner. Jake Wright was another debutant in the first half after his move from Oxford United.

survivor as Wilder made ten changes at half time in Spain.

A penalty was awarded after a foul on Dominic CalvertLewin which Billy Sharp dispatched to make it 3-0 to the Blades. I think we, as a team, need to start well and take it in to the season.

We’re just getting to know each other and want to start winning games.” Calder, 20, sees his return on loan from Aston Villa as the beginning of a new era in South Yorkshire. “I could have gone to a couple of other teams but Doncaster are a good club and I wouldn’t say that they’re a League Two team so hopefully we can get up there and get back to League One, I want to be a part of it,” he revealed. “Last season we were around the bottom fighting to stay up and this season we want to fight for promotion and be up there and around it. I thought I did well at the end of the season but because it’s the start of

the season and we’ve got new signings I see it as a new start.

kean keen to sign Goalkeeper Jake Kean has joined Sheffield Wednesday.

The 25-year-old has signed for the Owls leaving Championship rivals Norwich by mutual consent. The towering shot-stopper rose through the ranks at Derby before joining Blackburn in July 2009. Kean made a total of 44 appearances for the Ewood Park club, punctuated with loan spells at Hartlepool, Rochdale, Yeovil and Oldham. Premier League side Norwich moved to sign the custodian in August 2015, which led to further loan stints at Colchester and Swindon. Upon signing his contract at Hillsborough, Kean said: “Obviously this is a massive club with a great history and hopefully an even better future. There is a lot of competition but any competition is good competition. It’s up to me to

come here and have a go and try and get that number one shirt. But it’s Keiren’s at the minute and if I can provide more competition for him and make him play better then great. I believe this club has got every chance to go up automatically, if not via the play-offs. There is a strong squad here and obviously on the back of the disappointment last year, the lads will want to kick on. It will be a difficult division, it always is. There are some big teams, who will have a good go but I expect it to be tough like always.” Kean is now looking forward to linking up with his new team mates on the training ground ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Benfica and the five-day Portuguese training camp the following day. He continued: “It’s been a strange year followed by a strange 24 hours with leaving Norwich and coming here but now I am just excited to be part of this squad and hopefully we can achieve something.” Incidentally, Jake’s great uncle Fred Kean also represented the Owls

between 1920 and 1928. The no-nonsense defender became the first Sheffield-born player to play for England since Tommy Crawshaw in 1904.

Kean left the Owls for Bolton in 1928 for a then club record sale.

Rotherham United can confirm the signing of Lewis Price on a two-year deal, subject to Football League ratification. The goalkeeper moves to AESSEAL New York Stadium after leaving fellow Championship club Sheffield Wednesday, after confirmation this evening that he has successfully passed a medical. The Wales international becomes boss Alan Stubbs’ second summer signing following the arrival of Anthony Forde, and will provide competition with current goalkeeper Lee Camp for a place between the sticks.

Speaking from the Millers’ pre-season training camp in Poland, Stubbs said: “The deal came up quite late. Andy Dibble has been looking to see what is available, and once we were made aware that Lewis was a possibility we moved quite quickly to do the deal.

We are delighted that we have managed to conclude the transfer now.”

Under the new emergency loan rules which have come into play, Stubbs acknowledged that it was vital that he was able to sign an experienced operator.

Price, 31, lists Ipswich Town, Derby County, Crystal Palace and most recently Sheffield Wednesday on his CV, with

his spell at the iPro Stadium coinciding with current boss Stubbs.

“It was important to get someone in with experience, and also someone who has experience in The Championship and consistently played at a good level,” Stubbs added. “Lewis has been around for a while now with the likes of Crystal Palace and latterly Sheffield Wednesday. I have had a little bit of time with Lewis as a player so I know what type of person and what type of character he is. He will be great in the dressing room and I know he will fit in here really well. He comes in to provide good competition for places, that’s what we want for all of the positions not just the goalkeeping

Price will join up with his new team mates on Tuesday after the Millers return from their pre-season tour of Poland which concludes tomorrow evening. Stubbs continued: “We arrive back on Sunday evening, the players will then have Monday off. Then we are back in on Tuesday and we are then looking forward to seeing Lewis, and he’ll get to join up with all of his team mates.”
