MOTORCYCLES MOTORISTS HIT BY FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MONTHLY FUEL PRICE RISE WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE Motorists saw the price they were paying for fuel at the pumps rise for the fourth month in a row in June, new RAC Fuel Watch figures show. The latest increase means the cost of filling up an average family car with petrol is now £5.64 higher than it was at the beginning of March. But the motoring organisation says drivers are still paying less for their fuel than they were a year ago. According to RAC Fuel Watch, the average price of petrol increased by 1.5p a litre to 112.17p in June. The price of diesel, meanwhile, rose by 1.66p to 112.39p per litre. That means it now costs £61.69 to fill up a typical family car with petrol compared to £60.88 at the beginning of June and £56.05

four months ago when the average price was 101.91p a litre. Diesel, meanwhile, now typically costs 11p per litre more than it did in early March, meaning a comparable fill-up will now set motorists back £61.81. The cost is £5.96 more than at the beginning of March and 91p higher than a month ago. Commenting on the latest rise, the motoring organisation’s fuel spokesman, Simon Williams, said: “June was another bad month for motorists with the price of petrol going up again. While it was only a penny and a half it makes for a rise of more than 10p since the start of March. “Filling up with unleaded is now £5.64 more expensive, which is enough to make

CALLS TO ADAPT ROADS TO MAKE THEM SAFER FOR OLDER DRIVERS The Government has been urged to adapt the country’s road network in order to make it safer for an ageing population. Ministers are reported to have backed the recommendations made in the report from the Older Drivers Task Force. These include the replacement of T-junctions with roundabouts which, it is thought, could make roads easier to navigate for the elderly. The report cites figures showing that the risk of over-75s being involved in fatal accidents at T-junctions is double that of younger drivers. Using roundabouts instead could make it easier for pensioners to pull out into traffic. The report said: “Given that the percentage of serious accidents at T-junctions increases significantly with age after 65, and that this does not happen at roundabouts, it would be worth studying the value of installing miniroundabouts at busy T-junctions.” Further “pensioner-friendly” recommendations in the report include installing more segregated slip roads leading to proper lanes on motorways and A-roads. This would allow elderly drivers to join busy roads without having to look over their shoulder. According to the report, white lines in the middle of roads should also be widened and a greater number of traffic lights installed at crossroads. In addition, signs could be made more visible by attaching reflective backing, while the size of lettering on road markings could be increased.Elderly drivers should also be given eye tests from the age of 60 to reduce the risks of hazards associated with the loss of vision. However, the report stopped short of recommending a reduction in the age at which older drivers have to renew their licence, which currently stands at 70. In contrast, it said that drivers should have to apply for a new licence when they reach the age of 75. Transport Minister Andrew Jones told the Times that the Government would now be looking at the report in greater detail. He said the report “calls for action from a number of sectors, including government, and we will consider the recommendations carefully”. The Institute of Advanced Motorists recently relaunched its Mature Drivers’ Assessment to

give the elderly a chance to have their skills behind the wheel checked. John Plowman, chairman of the task force, said: “People are living longer, healthier, more active lives, and driving longer. “The number of drivers over 85 will double to one million by 2025, many without access to public transport. “This influx of older drivers has important economic and social value but it also presents road safety risks if we don’t adapt. “Getting to grips with these risks, without limiting the independence and freedoms of the elderly is an important policy challenge.”

an unpleasant dent in household budgets up and down the country, especially for those who have more than one car or need to fill up regularly.” Despite June’s increase motorists are still paying about 5p a litre less for petrol and 8.5p less for diesel than they were 12 months ago, Mr Williams added. Wholesale fuel prices, meanwhile, only increased slightly after the fall in the value of the pound following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, he said. That, Mr Williams added, was due to oil prices dropping at the same time. Looking ahead, Mr Williams said OPEC’s over production was likely to keep the price of oil at around $50 per barrel. Prices could even fall, he added, once production issues have been resolved.

SHEFFIELDERS CHALLENGED TO “MOVE MORE” IN JULY A series of fun challenges designed to get people in Sheffield doing more physical activity during July has been unveiled as part of the city’s first Move More Month. Those who download the free Move More app will be able to sign up to a Steel City Move More Derby, which will see Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday supporters go head-to-head to see who has the most active fans. Supporters of both clubs will be invited to ‘Move More for Goals’ by pledging their football allegiance via the Move More app or website and then using their active minutes to score goals for their chosen team. The scores will be updated regularly during July and broadcast via social media. The winning club will be awarded the Steel City Move More Cup which will be presented at the first home game of the 2016/17 season. The people of Sheffield are also being asked to set a bench mark for movement that will be used to challenge other cities in the UK next year and achieve a combined one million active minutes. Business are also getting involved through the Move More ‘Go for Gold’ Workplace Challenge, delivered by the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) Sheffield partners, including the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Organisations compete within their own workforce as well as challenging colleagues from across the city. The ‘Go for Gold’ challenge has an Olympic theme where

participants are introduced to a new member of Team GB everyday of July and will be challenged to secure a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal for their athlete, their team and themselves by achieving 30 active minutes. All movement will be recorded by the Move More app and the data will automatically be updated to the Workplace Challenge Dashboard. Participants choose whether or not to share their data with colleagues but every minute counts towards your team’s total. The company with the most movement at the end of July will be awarded the title of Most Active Business in Sheffield. Professor Robert Copeland, project manager for the NCSEM and Move More, said: “These challenges have been designed to make moving more fun. Helping people to become more active, whatever their age or ability, is probably the best thing people can do for their health and wellbeing. It’s proven that increased activity improves overall health and happiness and reduces absenteeism, and helps create a more productive workforce. It’s not about running a marathon, but making every minute count. Instead of taking the lift – take the stairs, instead of driving to the corner shop, walk instead. Every minute moving equates to one Move More Minute, which will contribute to your overall score.” Move More Month, supported by Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, is aiming to get 50,000 Sheffield people

SPIRIT OF “WOMEN OF STEEL” The unveiling of the Women of Steel statue in Barker’s Pool has captured the imagination and hearts of the city, with around 3,000 people turning out in person to honour the ladies who were conscripted to work in steel works all over South Yorkshire during the wars. The #WomenofSteel hashtag was trending on twitter on the day, and tens of thousands of people shared images and the ‘Women of Steel’ song on social media in the days following the unveiling. The Council are now issuing a call to action for the public to keep this momentum going. Councillor Julie Dore said: “The unveiling of the statue was an incredible event. The atmosphere blew everyone away. We knew it would be a special day, but there were tears and dancing in the aisles. We want to keep

that spirit alive so we are asking firstly that people take a photograph of themselves with the statue ‘arm in arm to say thank you’ to the Women of Steel, and share these on social media. Secondly, we are delighted that John Reilly is donating any royalties he makes from downloads of his fantastic song to the fundraising appeal. Any further money will now be spent on creating an archive, education and legacy work to help tell the story of the Women of Steel to future generations” Please share your pictures ‘arm in arm to say thank you on twitter and facebook with the hashtag #WomenofSteel, and the Council accounts will share these. The song Women of Steel by John Reilly is available to download from itunes or amazon

TRACTOR ENTHUSIASTS RALLYING FOR ST LUKE'S Local Farmers and Tractor fans are taking to the rural roads of Sheffield in aid of St Luke’s on Sunday 10th July between 10.00am and 3.00pm. The Tractor Rally which will cover a route of over 30 miles begins at Storrs Green Farm, Storrs, Sheffield, S6, before making its way to Our Cow Molly for an ice cream stop, Broomhead Show for a serenade by Deepcar Brass Band and finishing at The Nags Head, Loxley for an afternoon lunch. The event follows on from a successful Tractor Rally in 2015, which raised over £1,000 for the Clic Sargent charity, where 60 tractors joined the procession. This year there has been increased interest for the event and it is anticipated that over 100 tractors will be taking part. The Tractor Rally event was initiated by young farmer Alice Hague of Storrs Green Farm, as part of her ongoing fundraising efforts for Clic Sargent after their support helped her family through her younger brother’s battle with cancer, which he unfortunately lost when he was aged just 11 years old. The decision to run this year’s

rally in aid of St Luke’s came after local famer Richard Thorpe tragically lost his battle with Cancer in December 2015. Leaving behind a wife and two young children who received amazing support from the charity, Richard was a well-known farmer who spent his life working on farms and rearing livestock. Leading the tractor procession in his memory will be his wife Ruth Thorpe and children. As part of the fundraising, there is also a “Tractor Ride Auction” courtesy of local farming business “Our Cow Molly”. Bidding is taking place via Facebook to win the chance to drive one of “Our Cow Molly’s” tractors on the Rally, with farm owner Eddie Andrews as passenger and guide. This would be an amazing experience for anyone who has an interest in farm machinery and support the whole day. To place your bid, please visit the St Lukes Tractor Rally 2016 facebook page. The event will be indeed a spectacular sight and spectators are welcomed along the route. Ideal viewing points for

people to watch and support the Tractor Rally: Our Cow Molly – Between 11.30am – 12.30pm Broomhead Show – 1.30pm Nags Head Public House – 3.00pm Finish – chance to view all the tractors on display in fields adjacent while the drivers enjoy lunch, courtesy of Moss Valley Fine Meats. Bradfield Brewery will be presenting awards to six lucky winners from the rally and the day will be rounded off with a charity auction and raffle, with prizes including meals out, drinks, clothing, agricultural equipment and much more. Remember all Tractors are welcome so all Tractors and their drivers’ come and register at Storrs Green Farm - 9am on Sunday 10th July, as the Rally starts at 10.00am. For further information please visit our Facebook page and donations can be made via www. justgiving.com/tractorrally2016

ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO TO TRAMLINES 2016 Tramlines, the UK’s biggest inner-city music festival, returns for an eighth year on Friday 22 July and runs until Sunday 24 July, with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Appearing at the 2016 event are Dizzee Rascal, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Jurassic 5, Kelis, George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, The Dandy Warhols, Mystery Jets, Gaz Coombes, Dawn Penn, Crazy P Soundsystem, Goldie, Craig Charles, Public Service Broadcasting, Field Music, Little Simz, The Enemy, Norman Jay MBE, Toddla T, Young Fathers, David Rodigan, Basement, Kate Jackson, Big Narstie, LEVELZ and loads more. Joining them on this stellar line up are over 200 local acts, touring bands and international talent which makes Tramlines a destination festival for fans of cutting-edge music across a whole range of genres. By day, it’s a place to discover the best in live music across the outdoor stages and live music venues, spanning hip-hop, indie, electronica, reggae and more. By night, Tramlines takes over the city’s clubs and warehouses, offering up a wide selection of all-things-electronic, from house to hip-hop and drum and bass to techno, all night long. Tramlines attracts 100,000 people over the three day festival, turning Sheffield into one massive festival site, creating a feel and atmosphere that rivals any greenfield festival site. It is the previous winner of Best Metropolitan Festival at the UK Festival Awards and was shortlisted for the Best Small Festival award by NME. 18 of Sheffield’s music venues and performance spaces will be pulling out the stops staging hundreds of artists across the city. The 17,500 capacity Main Stage returns to Ponderosa Park while Stage Two will now reside in the o2 Academy. Elsewhere, the Folk Forest stage, the 500-capacity Cathedral and Sheffield’s City Hall, amongst others, will be home to some of the most exciting artists around. There’ll be an expanded dance music programme at night time venues - Fusion, Foundry and The Octagon, Hope Works, Plug, The Night Kitchen, Yellow Arch, Code and the o2 Academy, featuring flawless DJ sets and live MC performances, from Randall, DJ Hype, MC Coco, Cut Chemist, Robert Hood Presents Floorplan, My Nu Leng & Dread MC, Greg Wilson, Fleetmac Wood and Leon Vynehall, to name just a few.

Tramlines is more than just great music. Discover an array of street theatre on Barkers Pool, breakdancing battles and spray-can art at the Peace Gardens’ Community World Stage, woodcraft and free yoga sessions, plus free family entertainment at the Weston Park party, as well as the brand-new film programme at the Showroom Cinema. All this is available for just £42 (+ bf) for a weekend ticket. To stay for the official closing parties on Sunday night, it’s an extra £5 (+ bf). Festival Director Sarah Nulty commented: “Sheffield is an amazing city with a wealth of musical talent. We aim to bring a mix of our favourite upand-coming artists and pioneering and iconic national and international artists to the festival and are proud of this year’s fantastic, diverse lineup. “We pride ourselves on being the most competitively priced music festival out there. Tramlines is all about giving an opportunity to experience great music in Sheffield, a city that has played a pivotal role in every era of contemporary music.” With an impressive music programme over three days, Tramlines 2016 is expected to attract fans from across the UK. Weekend tickets at £42 plus booking fee can be purchased from http://tramlines.gigantic.com/ Under 12s go free; see the website for more details. For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2016 and for more info on the artists playing visit www.tramlines.org.uk or follow Tramlines on Twitter @tramlines

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

What a week for weather… I’ve spent much of the last few days waiting for an opportunity for some time on the bank which would at least allow me to pack my kit away dry, but it’s been hard work! Last week, whilst on the bank for Angler’s Mail magazine, compiling some of my ‘Where to fish’ videos for their Youtube channel, I visited a reservoir, which, in truth, I’ve been a little reticent about visiting as it holds some bad memories for me. The reason? As a former firefighter and water rescue instructor, the only thing I’ve ever recovered from the venue before had been poor souls who had sadly drowned. It may sound a little melodramatic, but sometimes, you remember things for a reason, but perhaps it was time to finally put them to one side and actually try to enjoy the lake. I turned up to record my thoughts for the magazine, and happened upon Geoff, the only angler on the banks of this forty acre venue. It was a surprise to find only one solitary angler, especially as he informed me that the fishing was actually pretty good! As is always the case, we started to chat, and as we did, he was hitting bite after bite as roach and bream homed in on his maggot hook bait; some of the roach were fine fish indeed, and Geoff intimated that a 2lb fish was a real possibility… surely that had to warrant further investigation? I returned a few days later, set up just above where Geoff had fished, and opted to fish the quivertip in a fairly comfortable peg.

My initial action was to lay a bed of feed using a large Dinsmores Scoop feeder, which allowed me to quickly get down quite a bit of brown crumb, hemp and micro pellets, before I even thought about attaching a hook. When I’m after bream and roach, I like to clip up for accuracy, which also means the feed is concentrated, so once I’d put a carpet of enticing (hopefully) goodies in the swim, I put a couple of maggots on the hook, cast out, and sat back to wait. I rarely strike at small movements, remembering that I’d once read a piece by the late Ivan Marks which advised sitting on your hands until a proper bite is registered, so I waited for a ‘real’ pull. It came a few minutes later, and a silvery roach of around six ounces was quickly deposited in the waiting net; brilliant! I love roach fishing, and I think that aside from big perch, it’s probably one of my favourite fish to catch, but on occasion, they can be very shy, as I was to find out... The roach continued

to provide sport, mostly fish of between six and ten ounces, with an odd bream to around three pounds amongst them, but then the swim suddenly slowed and bites became very tentative. I have no idea why. It could have been the onset of a cool wind, or air pressure, or too much feed, but the bites dried up, and all I was left with was badly crushed maggots as roach tried to remove them from the hook leaving me none the wiser. I tried to change things by swapping hook for a different size, changing the length of the hook link and the weight of the feeder, but to no avail. I was missing bites, and the fish had gone off the feed… Sadly, none of the bigger roach had graced my net, and as I only had a few short hours to fish, and the sky was darkening fast, I decided to pack up before I got soaked! After depositing my kit in the van, I had the urge to walk around the lake and pause for a minute or two at various spots. As I mentioned, this lake held some sadness for

me, but more for others who were directly affected by past tragedies, so I felt it important to reflect a while… It’s a beautiful venue, surrounded by woodlands and enjoyed by many who have no idea of the dark secrets it holds. Hopefully, I can return and discover some of the much more pleasant secrets, perhaps in the form of a wily 2lb roach; I hope so…

HAMMOND SHOWN THE DOOR by Andrew Smith

It’s not common for a players exit from a football club to be met with such jubilation from the fan base, but in the case of Dean Hammond’s exit from Sheffield United, it is clear that the 33-year-old will not be missed by many. The exLeicester City and Southampton midfielder has agreed a settlement with the Blades which releases him from his contract. Chris Wilder’s predecessor Nigel Adkins, spent months pursuing Hammond last season, the midfielder went on to make 34 appearances for the Blades but failed to convince many that he was worthy of extending his stay at the Lane. After gifting Scunthorpe United a goal in the last game of the season, and subsequently being substituted at half time, it appeared as though

that was the last time Blades fans had to concern themselves with Dean Hammond. However, in a shock to many, following Adkins’ departure it was announced that Hammond had chosen to extend his contract by a year, to the utter dismay of the majority of the fan base. The cost of the settlement and Hammond’s significant wages is part of the legacy of Nigel Adkins’ mismanagement of Sheffield United. Despite the financial set back,

Chris Wilder’s team soldier on in preparing the team for the upcoming season. On incoming transfers, Wilder said: “We’ve brought in two already and we’re working hard on other potential deals.” However, Wilder did admit that players would need to move on in order to allow more freedom for incomings, this comes as Che Adams is linked with a potential move to the Championship and above.

SIGNAL OF INTENT Barry Bannan believes the arrival of Scotland team mate Steven Fletcher is a strong signal of intent from the Owls early in pre-season. The former Sunderland man linked up with the squad on Monday for the first day of pre-season following his switch to Wednesday. Bannan is all too familiar with the international striker and is excited to have him on board for the coming season at Hillsborough. “He’s a very good striker, I’ve played with him a few times at international level, he’s played at the very top and I think he will be a very good addition for us,” Bannan said. “He’s a good lad, I’ve met up with him a few times recently with Scotland and got on really well with him. “He’ll have no problems fitting in, I’ve seen what he can do and he’ll be really up

for it this season. “He’ll be out to prove a point to everybody and show what a good player he is.” Fletcher now joins the likes of Gary Hooper, Fernando Forestieri, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao in a strong-looking attack and Bannan says things are shaping up well in the early throes. He added: “Last season we

Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs says that tying down club captain Lee Frecklington to a new deal will mark a signal of intent to other potential summer recruitment targets. The Millers boss expressed his pleasure after the Lincoln-born midfielder pledged his future to the club and believes Frecklington signing on the dotted line could pave the way for a number of other targets to do the same.

TYLER AIMING TO RAISE ROOF New signing Tyler Garratt is hoping that his energy and enthusiasm can endear him to the clubs fans as Rovers gun for promotion from EFL Sky Bet League Two. The 19 year old penned a three year contract with Darren Ferguson’s side after departing

The ever-popular midfield ace put pen to paper on the new deal on the day the Owls squad linked back up for the first day of preseason. “I’m so happy to sign a new deal, I am where I want to be,” he told swfc.co.uk. “I was always dreaming and wishing to be here and I want to thank everybody for all the wishes they gave me to stay and hopefully we can have another successful season. “I always wanted to be here and

“I’m delighted that he’s signed and he’s seen his future here and it bodes well for other signings that we make in the coming days and weeks,” Stubbs told www. themillers.co.uk. “I think it was important for me and for Lee that we got his deal organised and settled and it was one of a number that we’d identified and we were discussing with to try and tie them down and we’re glad to be able to say we’ve managed to do that now.” The popular midfielder was the club captain during the 2015/16 campaign and Stubbs believes his new deal is a fitting reward for his contribution to Rotherham United since his arrival in 2013. “As club captain it’s a reward for what he’s been doing over the last number of years at the club,” he explained. “I think it’s important that everyone we give a new contract

to, we do it because we feel that they’re going to add to the playing squad and Lee, not just over the last couple of seasons but the number of years that he’s been here, has added quality to the team all the time. “He’s the club captain and I think that speaks for itself and the clubs that I’ve been at I’ve always had a good working relationship with my captain and with Lee that won’t be any different.”

Bolton Wanderers and has set his sights on cementing a regular starting spot. “I play at left back and like to get forward. I’ve got quite a bit of pace, get forward and get crosses in the box and help the team score goals,” he said. “I’d like to give it my all, start each game and hopefully push for promotion. “It’s a big thing in football, every team wants to go to the next tier of football and we’re going to give it our best shot.” Lincoln-born Garrett made three appearances for the Trotters last season and said that he was delighted his switch to South

Yorkshire was complete. “I’m pleased that I’ve signed, I’m glad it’s all sorted and I can’t wait to go out and get started with the other lads,” he continued. “I got a call from my agent whole I was on holiday in Spain saying that Doncaster were interested and I needed to meet the manager so I flew back within a few days and it’s gone from there really. “He (Ferguson) has been quite a big influence, he knows what he’s talking about, he told me where I’d be and how I’d fit in and how its going to go; promotion is a big thing for the season.”

I’m obviously looking forward to the new campaign. That’s not only me, I’m sure all the supporters are looking forward. “Hopefully we can do better than last year and I am sure we will improve as a team.” Semedo has been with Wednesday every step of the way since promotion from League 1 in 2011/12 to where the Owls are today. And as Wednesday re-group for the campaign ahead, the Portuguese is confident his team can continue to move in the right direction. He added: “Since I have come here, I have seen a lot of improvements and we are always moving forward and I hope we can do that again. “I am here to do my best like I always do. We are a squad of players, and though only 11 can play, we are a team and if one wins, then everyone wins.”

signed the likes of Hooper and Forestieri and the manager and chairman have already carried that on this season by signing Fletcher and I’m sure there will be more coming in. “They are all great strikers, we have got a bit of everything which will keep everybody on their toes and be good for the Jose Semedo says his main club moving forward.”
