TENS OF THOUSANDS ENJOY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON Around 35,000 people packed into Sheffield city centre last Sunday (22/11) to watch champion fundraiser John Burkhill flick the switch on this year’s Christmas lights.

Mr Burkhill took to the

Peace Gardens stage to turn the lights on with pop band Stooshe; singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan; the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain; stars of this year’s Sheffield Theatres pantomime including

Damian Williams and CBeebies’ Alex Winters; presenters from Heart and Father Christmas.

After the crowd – watching in the Peace Gardens and also on a giant screen in Pinstone Street – counted down to zero, the switch was flicked and the city centre was bathed in twinkling light.

Last weekend’s event involved attractions across the city centre such as a live Nativity, reindeer from Mayfield Alpacas, vintage vehicles from the National Emergency

Services Museum, carol singing, children’s character walkabouts, snow machines, fairground rides, entertainers including the Big Bubble Man and a fairy grotto in the Winter Garden.

The entertainment programme in the Peace Gardens kicked off with Sheffield’s own Caroline Frances at 2.30pm and included choirs, dancers and a performance from Lucy Spraggan, before the lights were switched on at 5.30pm.

Stooshe, best known for

their Top 10 single “Black Heart”, then finished off the event with a show that included covers of wellknown Christmas tunes.

Now that the lights have been switched on, the festive feeling will continue right up until Christmas with the Christmas markets and Sleigh Bar on Fargate.

As well as traders from across the UK and Europe selling a variety of gifts, jewellery, crafts, the Christmas market includes a huge range of refreshment stalls selling hot food and drinks.

Housed in traditional wooden huts, the Christmas market runs from 10am to 6pm daily, and will also be open for late-night shopping until 8pm each Wednesday in December.

on the site of the former Castlegate Markets. Glassball have experience in working on public realm projects and involving the public on these schemes.

The project will be supervised by Yorkshire Artspace on behalf of the City Council and it is anticipated that the work will reflect on the future of the site as well as its rich mediaeval and more recent history.

The Castlegate site has a long history – it’s where Sheffield began - from the Norman Sheffield Castle, the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots, through centuries of markets, industry, the first purpose-built Town Hall and courts to the blitz and more recent Castle Markets constructed in the 1950s.

It is intended that the artist will work with local historical groups, including the Friends of Sheffield Castle and students from the University of Sheffield’s School of Architecture, who worked on a ‘Revealing Castlegate’ project in 2013-14.

A number of workshops will be arranged at Yorkshire Artspace’s Exchange Place studios nearby with the Friends Group, local schools, residents and businesses.

Councillor Leigh Bramall, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Development said: “This is an exciting project and we are keen for a

wide range of contributions to be gathered to make this a truly interactive piece of artwork that tells the fascinating story of Castlegate.”

The demolition of the Castlegate site should be completed by Christmas, so the consultation on the panels will take place over the next two months and hopefully be installed by the end of February.

Cora Glasser of Glassball added: “David and myself are keen to involve as many voices connected to this fascinating multi-layered site within the artwork as possible. We would love to hear from people who have a story or personal connection they would like to share about Castlegate. You can become part of the artwork by visiting our project website www. castlegate-art.info. There will also be project updates on this site, showing our work in progress and planned events taking place.”

The Castlegate area of Sheffield is changing rapidly.

After a period of decline the area is now undergoing quite visible change. This includes the Castle Market site currently under demolition, making way for a new vibrant city quarter that will offer independent businesses a chance to grow and the community to thrive.

DONCASTER RACECOURSE IN NATIONAL COMMUNITY SCHEME TO HELP DISADVANTAGED YOUNG PEOPLE Doncaster Racecourse is hosting a series of education racing days as part of a national drive to help underprivileged young people.

Racing Together, British Racing’s collective banner for community engagement, is this week delighted to announce the launch of a partnership with Active Communities Network (ACN), an organisation that provides sports-based, personal and social development programmes, accrediting training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people aged 11-25.

Through this partnership Racing Together will have the opportunity to work with more than 1,000 at risk young people in Britain through series of racing education

days.

This will provide a racing-based social development programme from three beacon racecourses – Doncaster, Aintree, Lingfield Park – with the objective of providing a positive experience for the young people, showing them an alternative path in life and teaching them about the racing industry and career opportunities within it. This will introduce them to a sporting industry that supports more than 85,000 fulltime jobs in Britain.

To coincide with the launch, Doncaster Racecourse this week (November 24) hosted a special

event that saw youngsters aged 17-20 quiz top female jockey Hayley Turner about all things racing. Ms Turner, who recently retired, came second in her final UK race in the Betfred November Handicap at Doncaster earlier this month.

The occasion came hot on the heels of another event at the racecourse last Friday, when young people enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the South Yorkshire venue. They met racecourse staff to learn more about what is needed to put on a raceday and about the racing industry more broadly – introducing them to a sporting

industry that supports more than 85,000 full-time jobs in Britain.

The two events came about as a result of a partnership between Doncaster Racecourse and Flying Futures, which delivers a range of community engagement programmes locally on behalf of ACN. Kieran Gallagher, executive director of Doncaster Racecourse said: “We are committed to providing learning opportunities for young people, which is why we teamed up with Flying Futures, ACN and Racing Together to get involved in this worthwhile national initiative.

Some of these young people

may go on to pursue a career in the industry so it’s vital that we educate them about the wide range of different opportunities on offer.”

From now until the end of 2016 the three beacon racecourses in the ACN-Racing Together initiative will facilitate the racing education days, with plans to extend their geographical reach in the future.

TAKE A MAGIC CARPET RIDE WITH ALADDIN THIS CHRISTMAS This Christmas, hold on tight as Sheffield Theatres and Evolution Pantomimes take audiences on a spectacular magic carpet ride in Aladdin, at the Lyceum Theatre from Friday 4 December to Sunday 3 January.

A pub landlord from Sheffield is supporting his local cancer hospital to say thank you for caring for his dad.

Christy Beardshaw (41) who lives in Netherthorpe and runs The Ship Inn at Shalesmoor is supporting Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity's 'For One Night Only' fundraising initiative after his dad was diagnosed with cancer last September.

Norman Beardshaw (64) was diagnosed with Lung Cancer last September; just 3 weeks after his mum passed away, and began a course of Radiotherapy treatment at a Weston Park Hospital.

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people.

Christy's dad, known to friends and locals as 'Little Norm' for his small physique but huge heart, now attends the hospital for regular check- ups to monitor any growth of his tumour.

In support of his Dad’s cancer fight, Christy started fundraising for Weston Park Hospital's dedicated charity to enable patients like his dad to receive the same first- class treatment and care.

In his previous role as Landlord at The Wisewood Inn, Christy held raffles, quiz nights and football matches to raise as much money as possible for the cancer charity before moving to The Ship Inn and continuing with his fundraising plans.

On the 1st December Christy will hold his first fundraising night at The Ship Inn, with entertainment from fellow cancer charity fundraisers and local musicians, TOFFEE Music.

Christy said, “The staff at Weston Park Hospital were

fantastic with my dad during treatment, and still to this day, when he visits for check-ups, they treat him incredibly well.”

“The hospital provides such a vital service for those fighting cancer across our region and I want to do all I can to raise funds to support its work.”

“I’m new to The Ship Inn and I’ve got lots of fundraising activities planned over the next few months so that more money can be spent on those who need it the most.”

For One Night Only is a fundraising initiative which encourages pubs and clubs across the region to organise events throughout the year in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer.

The charity needs to raise over £1.8 million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep pa-

tients at the forefront of cancer treatment.

Community Fundraiser, Lucy King said, “Christy has supported the cancer charity now for a number of years and raised such an incredible amount.

“For One Night Only is a great way for venues across the region to organise a whole variety of fundraising events whilst involving members of the community."

“The reality is that sadly we all know someone who has been affected by cancer and the more we can all do to support Weston Park Hospital; the more patients can be supported into the future."

Last year, For One Night Only raised over £15,000 and helped directly improve the lives of thousands of cancer patients receiving treatment across the region.

SHEFFIELD PUB NAMED ONE OF CAMRA’S BEST FOUR PUBS IN BRITAIN A Sheffield pub stands a chance of winning CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year competition for an unprecedented third time.

The pub was judged against 16 of the best pubs in the country, in the regional heats of CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year competition, with four super regional finalists going through the last round of the competition.

It was described by judges as having the perfect mix of the essential characteristics which make a great pub: atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, value for money, customer mix, but most importantly – quality real ale.

The Kelham Island Tavern is in with a chance of winning National Pub of the Year for a third time, having won the prestigious award in both 2008 and 2009.

HELLO... ADELE RELEASES FASTEST EVER SELLING UK ALBUM Album Review: Adele - 25

by Katy Evans The wait is finally over…Adele is back. Over four years in the making, Tottenham born superstar Adele is back with her long awaited third album which has well and truly stormed the charts worldwide this week. Having sold over 2.3 million copies in the US within three days, the UK’s finest export is expected to achieve the accolade of fastest selling record in UK music history.

Opening up with the first single to be released off the album, “Hello” speaks not only on a personal level but also to everybody who has waiting so long for this new record. A classic Adele track, this song showcases exactly why the twenty five year old is massively celebrated across the world. “I Miss You” slides us into the depths of Adele’s emotions – with lyrics to include “Let me fall into your gravity” and “no one has me like you do,” it’s refreshing to listen to an Adele record which celebrates love, rather than mourns loss.

“When We Were Young” is the ultimate heartbreaker song. This track is overflowing with emotion which is perfectly crafted through the delicate lyrics from Adele. A true connection can be struck with this track – regardless of age or experience, it’s difficult not to allow this record to pull on your old tender heart. “Remedy” opens with a spectacular piano solo, a trade mark stamp of the enigma that is Adele.

Even from the opening four bars, it’s clear that this track is going to be a tear jerker. What this single has so beautifully created is arguably the best chorus on the album. Highlighting the light and dark of her voice, Adele has mastered telling us a story without being overly preachy. Once again, it’s beautiful to hear that the star has moved on from her material within “21.” Stating that “25” is a “moving on record,” it’s clear that although only 25 years old, Adele has woven a masterpiece of hits which reveal her rollercoaster journey to get to where she is today.

“Water Under The Bridge” is Adele’s newest single, which hints at funk influences which is massively refreshing within the record. As a whole, this track is the standout recording on “25.” Additional chorus vocals add richness to the core of the song, whilst the

melody is overflowing with soul elements. Having recently performed this single on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, if you have yet to catch this showcasing on youtube, do so now…it’s quite possibly better performed live than it is on record, which undeniably is a true testament to the talent of Adele.

“River Lea” marks Adele returning back to her hometown of Tottenham, with touching lyrics to include “But it’s in my roots, it’s in my veins, it’s in my blood.” Its poignant to consider Adele’s personally written ode to her upbringing, “Hometown Glory” on her debut “19” album over six years ago. She has toured the world ten times over, performed at some of the most iconic stages on the planet, making herself a fortune along the way, however Adele is still the vulnerable singer songwriter she was when she first penned the lyrics to “Hometown Glory” when she was only 17.

Everything has changed, yet Adele sings that she still wants her roots to remain firmly in place. Rather than flaunting herself on beaches in the Caribbean or boasting about buying houses in all four corners of the world, refreshingly Adele has kept everything so real.

If we look at the figures, it is astonishing to believe how many records Adele has sold of “25.” During its first day of release, in the UK the album sold over 300,000 copies and by its third day had shipped over 538,000. In the US, the album has officially been granted the award as the biggest selling record of 2015 and flew into the number one position in over 30 countries worldwide. Although she said that she was fearful that the writer’s block had ruined her ability to write songs, Adele has once again proved that she is one of the best lyricists of all time.

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival One of the most iconic bands to emerge from the San Francisco melting pot of the sixties is without doubt Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Their blues and roots rock music is synonymous with the anti-war-peace and love-counterculture of the time. John Foggerty, the lead vocalist, wrote most of the music as well as playing lead guitar. He was very much at the helm of the band that included his brother Tom on rhythm, Stu Cook on bass and Doug Clifford on drums. In 1969 the quartet released three incredible LPs, one of which was Green River.

Packed full of lively melodies, played on sunkissed guitars, with powerful inimitable vocals, Green River is a joyous record that oozes good time vibes.

The foot-tapping title track has the brightest melody and sets the tone of the album right from the beginning. Wrote A Song For Everyone really shows off Foggerty’s incredible vocal talent, whilst The Night Time Is The Right Time is an energetic piece, peppered with great guitar licks and a rousing chorus that really gets the blood pumping.

Despite the summery feel of the album, some of the lyrics are quite dark and melancholy at times.

On Bad Moon Rising, one of CCR’s greatest hits, Foggerty warns “Hope you got your things together/ Hope you are quite prepared to die.”

At the time, the band seemed to have a bottomless pit of fantastic songs at their disposal, so there isn’t a weak track on the record. CCR have sold 26 million albums in the United States alone and Green River is arguably their greatest.

It sits comfortably amongst the very best from its era and over 45 years later it sounds absolutely delightful.

It has been a busy few weeks as the nominated shortlist acts have been performing around the pubs and clubs in South Yorkshire. But now all the votes are counted, checked and verified and we have the results!

perhaps gone on to greater things, but always remember their roots on the club circuit, and indeed often come back to help ensure their continued existence.

Local production company Groovy Gazza Productions have been asked to present their show, ‘A Salute to the 1940’s’ in the City Hall Ballroom next April.!

The show featuring award winning tribute artiste Lorrie Brown as Vera Lynn, has been touring the UK for the last 5yrs.

Producer Gary Birtles says ‘We have appeared in several local venues like hotels and even garden centres but we can’t wait to perform the show at a venue as prestigious as the City Hall.’ The show features tributes to several of the acts famous during WW2 including George Formby, Gracie Fields, The Andrews Sisters and G.I Frank Sinatra, as well as Lorrie’s Vera Lynn tribute.

Readers may recall she actually had the honour of meeting Dame Vera earlier this year after she heard of Lorrie’s award as UK No.1 Vera Lynn tribute.

Gary appears in the show as the air raid warden who keeps everyone in line and introduces the acts.

Sheffield readers may also recall the show

appeared for 3yrs at the Peace Gardens on Armed Forces and Veterans day between 2011 - 2013.

Gary continues, ‘We love working in our home town, we’ve built up a great following in Sheffield and many people come to see Lorrie when she is performing her solo show in the local venues’.

Top tips on driving in winter weather from Mark Shaw Manager Driver Training of FedEx UK Blessed with a moderate climate, the UK doesn’t experience extreme winter weather as often as some countries, but when the snow and ice does hit, the consequences can be severe. During the winter months, it’s not always possible to postpone journeys, with millions of drivers still needing to use Britain’s roads for professional or personal reasons.

So as a Qualified ‘Advanced’ Driver and LGV driver with 38 years’ experience driving on all kinds of roads, in all kinds of conditions, I wanted to share my top tips for safe driving in poor weather.

Preparing for your journey • Keep essential items in your vehicle. Ice scrapers are helpful when leaving in the morning and a folding shovel, kept in the vehicle, can be useful for clearing a path through deep snow. Don’t forget your gloves, warm clothing/blankets, snacks and a safety triangle.

• Plan your journey. Try to use main roads wherever possible as they are more likely to have been cleared and gritted. Avoid using very quiet roads wherever possible. Keep an up-to-date map in the vehicle (don’t just rely on Sat-Nav).

• Make sure your fuel and fluid levels are topped up. You may need to make a longer journey than originally planned due to road closures or traffic congestion. · Charge your mobile phone and keep a spare charger in the car. This will allow you to call for help in an emergency. If you are travelling alone on a long journey, let someone know your ETA so they can alert the emergency services if you do not arrive.

• Consider winter tyres. If you live in an isolated area known for bad weather conditions, winter tyres could be a good investment or you might consider hiring or buying snow chains. Regular Tyres should be at the correct pressure and have good all round tread depth.

• Keep windscreens and all windows clean and clear.

You should also remember to fill up the windscreen fluid bottle with screen wash, to avoid freezing.

• Use your heater system or air conditioning to demist the windscreen. This will lessen the amount of condensation inside the vehicle.

• Make sure all lights and number plates are free from snow/Ice. This should be done on the front and the back, it’s a legal requirement. If a light stops working, replace them as soon as you can. Carry out a walk-round check of your vehicle before you set off on your journey.

• Keep an eye on both the weather and the temperature. When temperatures drop to around zero, keep a close eye on the road. If it looks wet, then it’s probably icy. Always be mindful about the possibility of black ice.

• Try to drive so that you don’t need your brakes.

When the roads are icy, using your brakes can do more harm than good. Give yourself plenty of time to slow down, moving down the gear box gradually/ smoothly to reduce speed in a controlled way.

A bit of variety this week, a session after carp (I know I said I’d packed in for the year, but it was so warm!) which yielded nothing but bream, and then a session on the lure gear which was great fun!

I started the week at a small complex called Basford Coarse Fishery, and set up two rods in an attempt to catch an end of season carp. I hadn’t fished this particular pool for over twenty years, and after a quick wander around and a chat to a venue regular, I set up facing the island in an area where I’d noticed a single fish roll. Simple tactics were selected, a method feeder packed with a mini pellet and sticky groundbait mix, with a 10mm Mainline Cell hook bait on one rod, and on the other, my fallback bait for this year, Mainline Essential IB twinned with a small pva stick to protect the hook link. I have no idea what’s in Essential IB, I just know it’s worked all year and at every venue I’ve visited!

Both rods were despatched, one to the island margin, and one to a corner area I’d thrown a few freebies into. I sat back to wait, and it began to rain. Hard.

And it didn’t stop all day! With predictable regularity, my baits were picked up by a series of bream, some decent fish of around 4lb, but not what I was after, and for every one I had to land, I got a good soaking as the rain continued to teem! Eventually, as the skies went very dark, and the wind threatened to deposit my bivvy elsewhere, it was time to pack up. I would hazard a guess that over a dozen bream tripped up over my baits during the few short hours I was there, but sadly, not a single carp!

A second session was much more fruitful. I’ve ‘rediscovered’ Rudyard Lake, just a couple of miles from my home, and decided to put an hour or two into some lure fishing. I’ve recently had a great day chasing perch off the floating jetties, and whilst I bagged up with well over one hundred ‘wasps’, I had a feeling bigger fish were to be found, perhaps laying just off the hordes of smaller perch. I started off with the ‘in’ method, a simple dropshot rig, which was dropped into over ten feet of water, and dutifully jiggled to no effect. The last time I was here, using these tactics, the perch were crawling up the line! Where were they? A sudden disturbance however revealed a pair of ‘black death’ in the form of two hungry cormorants which had obviously flushed the fish.

Clipping the drop shot rig off, I tackled up with a fresh fluorocarbon leader and 3.5g jig head, onto which I carefully threaded a tiny pink paddletail lure.

I know perch can ‘nip’ at lures, and as I was fishing in deep water, I wanted to be sure that they nipped the hook rather than the lure so I didn’t miss any

Sadly the wintry weather put an end to a number of last weekend’s games, but nine games did survive the cold, including two League Cup 3rd Round games.

League Cup 3rd Round Both games played in the cup this weekend saw big scores. Defending Premier Division champions were helped to a 10-0 victory over Houghton Main Reserves thanks to four goals apiece from Andrew Billups and Curt Wilkinson. Not to be outdone, Tim Council and Tom Adams both scored hat-tricks for AFC Penistone Church, in their 8-1 away win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves of Division Two. Premier Division Goals from Jay McFadzean and Junior Undlov gave Swallownest FC a 2-0 away win over Athersley Recreation Reserves. With league leaders Houghton Main not in action the win was enough to put Swallownest joint on points with the leaders, but not enough to give them an outright lead, as they have a worse goal difference. Frecheville made it six wins on the spin, with a 3-1 home win over North Gawber Colliery. Bradley Hanson was the star of the show for Frecheville, scoring twice. The win continues

bites, and pushed the hook well into the body of the rubber replicant. A few quick cast and retrieves didn’t attract any attention, so the jig was allowed to sink to the bottom and left for a few seconds before a very slow ‘twitch and sink’ type recovery was instigated.

WHAM! The lure was almost instantly hit by a small fish which put up a great tussle on ultralight gear, before being unhooked and returned. Aha! A bit of trial and error had resulted in finding the tactic for the day, which continued to produce perch after perch, with some quality amongst them, in a haul of fish to 2lb 10oz; a pleasing result!

Standing on the floating jetties gave me access to a lot of water. The cormorants had moved away, and by simply turning around to face the shoreline, I had a whole new swim to search, so I tried a few casts into the shallows. A couple more perch followed, and then a ‘final’ cast (yep, that kind of ‘final’) saw my lure smashed by something bigger! I was hoping that it would be a monster perch, and a flash of gold as the fish surged beneath the jetty got my hopes up, but it quickly became apparent that I was hooked into a pike, and a very angry one at that! This beautifully marked fish dived repeatedly beneath the jetties, my rod tip plunged below the water in an effort to keep it from biting through the trace, and then it shot to the surface and tail walked as it tried to shed the lure without success! A superb specimen of around 8lb was safely netted, a quick glance of admiration given, then it was returned to put on a few pounds; what a bonus!

Ending the session, I tallied well over twenty perch with an odd lump amongst them, and a very welcome (and spectacular!) pike in pristine condition.

By this time however, I was freezing cold as a biting wind took its toll, so decided to retire to the café for a hot drink; a perfect end to a fun filled few hours using the lightest gear I could get away with… great sport, great fish and great fun!

The run ends a period of back-to-back league losses. Joe McGill scored the only goal as Jubilee Sports grabbed a narrow 1-0 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at Chaucer Schoool.

Division One Sheffield Bankers claimed their second home win of the season, with a comfortable 3-0 win over Byron House. Third placed Denaby Main were held to a 1-1 draw at Tickhill Square by Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Denaby have only dropped points on one other occasion this season, and have remarkably kept five clean-sheets in the eight games they have played.

Division Two Goals from Josh Sheppard and Robert Warner gave Kiveton Park an excellent 2-1 win over fourth placed New Bohemians at the SHU Sports Ground.

Everton loanee Conor Grant caused the Dale defence constant problems as he made a number of very positive runs through the middle. Chesting the ball down and volleying at goal on the turn, he forced a good save from Pereira.

Shortly before half time Rochdale had their best chance of the half as Donal McDermott got on the end of a long ball. Finding himself in space he saw Thorsten Stuckmann off his line and tried a lob over the Rovers man, but his effort was just wide of the post. Castro Pereira made a brilliant save in stoppage time to deny Andy Williams. Great work from Coppinger gave him space in the box to pull the ball back for the striker, hitting it first time Williams’ shot was heading for the bottom corner but for the fingertips of the Rochdale keeper.

That was the action of the half and the sides went in level with all to play for in the second half.

Like the first, it was a very slow start to the second half. The first chance fell to the visitors as McDermott delivered a deadly ball in towards the back post. With the Rochdale man waiting to head in from

4 yards, Craig Alcock was at full stretch to put it behind for a corner. Darren Ferguson introduced Keshi Anderson into the game but the strikers spell was shortlived as he left the field with a suspected broken leg after a strong collision with Oliver Lancashire. Some fantastic build up play by Rovers eventually allowed Cedric Evina to cross deep for Felipe Mattioni at the back post, volleying dangerously across the face of goal his effort was put behind by the Rochdale defender. With five minutes to play the visitors took the lead as they caught Rovers on the counter attack. Rovers looked as though they were going to take the lead as Grant skipped past his man before playing a low ball across the box for Coppinger. The Rovers skipper fired at goal but a very good block by McNulty denied him. On the counter McDermott found Ian Henderson unmarked in the box who was able to curl the ball into the top corner.

Despite there being five minutes of added time, Rovers were unable to find the equaliser and as the home side threw men forward Rochdale doubled their lead. Despite Stuckmann making a great save initially the ball was played across the box for Henderson to poke in from 3 yards.

Andy Butler said he was revelling in the new role he had been given in the Rovers back line.

Manager Darren Ferguson has reverted to a formation with wing backs which, prior to Rochdale’s late double on Saturday, had gone over 400 minutes without conceding a goal. “I think the change has paid dividends, we’ve had some good results, some not so good results but we’re learning on the training ground and we’re continually encouraged to do better,” he said.

“I’m enjoying it; we’ve got Craig (Alcock), Mitchell (Lund), Aaron (Taylor-Sinclair), Paul (McKay) and Rob (Jones) all vying for positions now so it’s good. Aaron and Craig get on the ball a lot more and the wing backs make us more attacking, but we’re also more defensively sound. Cedric (Evina) and Felipe (Mattioni) do a great job of running up and down the wings all day. Craig’s a good player,

NEIL Redfearn earned his first victory at the Millers helm on his old stomping ground of Elland Road as Joe Newell’s second-half header helped put Steve Evans’ Leeds United to the sword.

In a pulsating White Rose clash, Newell’s goal proved decisive as Rotherham held firm either side of the interval to record just their third win of the season and halt a run of four successive defeats. The victory was slightly marred as debutant Leon Best saw red alongside Gaetano Berardi following a late altercation although Best will have impressed the Millers faithful following an excellent forward display up to that point.

Following the international break, Millers chief Redfearn made nine changes to his starting line-up for the visit to his former club. New signings Best and Stephen Kelly made their debuts after putting pen to paper on deals until the end of the season while there were recalls for Lewis Buxton, Kirk Broadfoot, Joe Mattock in the Rotherham backline. Skipper Lee Frecklington shrugged off a calf injury to take his place in the Millers engine room alongside Richie Smallwood while Joe Newell and Grant Ward took the midfield flank berths. Best was joined upfront by Jonson Clarke-Harris while there was a familiar face in the home line-up as Scott Wootton lined up for the Whites following his loan spell at the AESSEAL New York Stadium last season.

The home side had the first sight of goal when Kelly was adjudged to have hauled over Mirco Antenucci and from the

resultant free-kick, Alex Mowatt curled an inviting centre into the danger area but Clarke-Harris was well-stationed to head clear. In the Millers’ first foray of note, Newell picked out the run of Best, who worked a yard of space on Berardi to advance into the box but his rising effort cleared the home crossbar. Minutes later, Berardi tripped Ward as he looked to brake clear and the Millers almost made the home side pay from the resultant freekick when Newell’s centre saw Marco Silvestri punch at fresh air but fortunately for the home side, no Miller was in attendance to turn the ball home. The visiting faithful had their hearts in their mouths when Chris Wood got the better of Kelly following a long punt forward but Broadfoot superbly read the play to prevent the New Zealander finding the unmarked Antenucci with the goal at his mercy.

Just past the quarter hour, the Millers were relieved to see an offside flag to prevent the home side grabbing the initiative as Rotherham failed to clear decisively and Wood pounced on the hesitation to fire a snap shot which was half saved by Lee Camp and the ball fell invitingly into the path of Stuart Dallas, who stroked home into the unguarded net but Leeds joy soon turned to despair as the assistant referee had raised his flag.

Mattock harshly became the first to see yellow for a trip on Dallas before Best showed great tenacity to pick the pocket of Giuseppe Bellusci near the corner flag before advancing menacingly into the

box but the Italian managed to strike out a leg to prevent the Republic of Ireland international striking goalwards. Minutes later, Mowatt tried an ambitious effort from distance which screwed harmlessly wide of the target but the Leeds playmaker popped up to great effect in their next attack when a one-two split open the Rotherham rearguard to release Dallas, whose pass was inch-perfect for the advancing Mowatt, who looked to guide the ball into the bottom corner but Camp was on his toes to superbly divert the ball around the post. Camp was in the thick of the action as he plucked crosscum-shots from Antenucci and Bellusci from underneath his own crossbar before Rotherham came within a whisker of the opener when Smallwood curled a delicate free-kick against the post from just outside the box but referee Keith Stroud booked Antenucci for encroachment, prompting a retake although it was believed the goal would have stood if the ball had hit the back of the net.

The home side were quick out of the blocks following the interval and after just a matter of seconds following the home kick-off, the ball was threaded to Antenucci, who fired a daisycutter from distance which had Camp nervously scurrying across goal as it whistled narrowly past the upright. Nervous home defending almost presented Best and Newell with an opportunity to brake clear before Wood tormented Kelly with a direct run along the left flank before playing a tantalising centre which

Butler admitted the serious injury to Keshi Anderson had upset the players and disturbed thier rhythm for a period.

“He was obviously badly hurt and in a lot of pain - even though you try to be professional that sort of injury does get to the players,” he reflected.

Rovers were kept goalless for the first time in four games and Butler underlined the importance of registering the first goal as he looked to Tuesday night’s home game with Chesterfield. “I think the first goal is vital and it allows you to set the tempo - like we did last week at Blackpool – you then have to come out and score and change your plans,” he said. “We had a few chances, one at the end of the first half where if that goes in then it’s a completely different game. We tried in the last ten minutes to get it back, we were either going to get draw 1-1 or lose 2-0. We’ll go back to the training ground and figure what we did right and what we did wrong and go again on Tuesday.”

Neil Redfearn labelled his first victory as a “sweet one.”

The Millers successfully ended a run of four successive defeats as a new-look Rotherham side shut out Steve Evans’ Leeds United. At the end of last season, both Redfearn and Leeds boss Steve Evans were in opposite dugouts but it was the Rotherham chief who was celebrating victory at his old stomping ground.

Redfearn was able to call on the services of skipper Lee Frecklington, who returned to the side following a calf injury, and the Millers boss was quick to praise the impact of his new and returning stars, who helped silence the Elland Road faithful. The only disappointment for Redfearn was the dismissal of Best late in the game following an altercation with Gaetano Berardi, with the Italian also seeing red, and he has called on his charges to repeat this level of performance on a regular basis.

“This can be a good catalyst for us.”

Redfearn insisted. “It’s like everything else though as one swallow does not make a summer. What is does do is give the boys some belief. We’ve talked about staying in the game and toughing it out and we did that today.”

Despite the home side building a head of steam, the visitors stunned the home faithful by breaking the deadlock nine minutes into the half. After Leeds failed to clear the danger following a quick Rotherham counter, the ball fell kindly for sub Harry Toffolo, who spotted Smallwood in space, and the ex-Middlesbrough midfielder took his time to deliver an inch-perfect cross and Newell ghosted in almost unnoticed between the Leeds defence and his bundled header beat the outstretched hand of Silvestri as it sneaked into the far corner of the net. The visitors were visibly lifted by the strike and Frecklington had a shot deflected wide of the target before Broadfoot became the latest to be cautioned seemingly for dissent. The Millers had a scare when Wood’s slide-rule pass put Luke Murphy in the clear but Toffolo showed his defensive instincts to put a lastditch block as the ball spooned over the advancing Camp but fortunately for the visitors, it curled narrowly wide of the target. Just past the hour mark, Rotherham almost doubled their advantage when the home defence failed to deal with a punt forward and Ward’s neat pass into the box found ClarkeHarris with his back to goal but he cleverly worked a shooting position to power a drive which was straight down the throat of Silvestri. Murphy became

the first home player to be cautioned for a foul on Frecklington before the home side came within inches of an equaliser when Wood’s knockdown was perfect for the run of Antenucci, who fired a skimming drive which Camp could only watch fizz past the visitors upright. Minutes later, the Millers almost had a firm grip on the game when Ward’s driven corner almost saw Frecklington sneak in at the far post following defensive hesistation but Leeds eventually managed to bundle the ball to safety. There was a moment of controversy with 17 minutes remaining when Berardi and Best clashed following the Irishmen’s challenge which saw the Leeds defender react angirily and the referee following consultation with the assistant referee brandished the red card to both men.

With time running out for the hosts, Lewis Cook blazed an effort harmlessly over from 25 yards before Newell became the next to see yellow for a clumsy challenge on Mowatt. Both Danny Ward and Bellusci were lucky to escape action following another clash before Wood had Leeds last effort of note when his powerful header from Antenucci’s cross went into the grateful hands of Camp.

The Millers almost put the icing on the cake in the dying seconds when Grant Ward broke clear but his fierce effort whizzed past the home upright but it didn’t matter as the Millers’ travelling contingent celebrated victory just seconds later.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 HARD-EARNED POINT FOR BLADES Jose Baxter scored the goal that earned United a deserved point on a cold afternoon at Walsall.

In an entertaining fixture, Baxter’s goal saw him join Adams and Sharp as joint leading scorer, whilst Long made a triple save and the Blades had what looked a strong penalty appeal.

Boss Adkins named an unchanged starting XI, the only change was amongst the substitutes where Reed replaced James Wallace. The tussle to get on top in the opening 20 minutes was undecided, with both sides able to lay claim that they had the better of it, with a number of chances at both ends. Sharp and Adams almost linked up after Coutts broke the line and Long pushed a shot from Evans around a post. From Hammond winning possession,

Baxter’s header from Campbell-Ryce’s cross was weak, whilst Long, off his line, was confident Bradshaw’s chip was drifting wide.

Moments later, though, on 18 minutes, the United goalkeeper was called upon to make an impressive triple save from Morris, Bradshaw and Sawyers, all after Campbell-Ryce did not get the free-kick he thought he deserved.

For the next 15 minutes, Walsall got on top, particularly in terms of chances.

Collins blocked from Lalkovic and Long saved from Evans, before twice the home side hit the woodwork.

Downing’s header from a corner came back off a post and Lalkovic cut inside from the left before smashing against the crossbar with Long beaten. Late in the half the Blades hit back with a couple of half chances but

efforts from Adams and Baxter were both blocked as the scoreline remained blank at the interval.

Within a minute of the restart, Chambers dragged a shot wide but Walsall opened the scoring with their next move. United were unable to keep up with Sawyers and from his cross, BRADSHAW was unmarked to poke home at the back post.

United went close to levelling three minutes later but Etheridge pushed an Adams shot around a post, whilst from the resulting corner, a Collins header was collected by the home goalkeeper.

Just before the hour mark the United players, management and supporters were enraged. Hammond’s through ball saw Adams clip the ball over the goalkeeper before appearing to be bundled over by

O’Connor just as he was about to score.

No penalty was forthcoming. Walsall appeared to have weathered the storm, a Morris shot was blocked by Collins and Evans shot wide, but the Blades were level on 66 minutes.

Sammon, on for a matter of minutes, used his power to put the home defence under pressure and once the ball was recycled from the right, BAXTER perfectly placed into the bottom corner with his left-foot.

After the equaliser, the game was even again, and tense for the supporters. Walsall will argue they had the better of the territorial advantage, and put in a number of crosses and set-pieces, plus an Evans shot which Long gathered at the second attempt. Inside the final five minutes, Cook curled a free-kick just

wide of the near post, which was preceded by three good Blades chances. Etheridge pushed away Baxter’s shot after Sammon laid off and the goalkeeper was quickly off his line to block from Adams, who had worked his way around the back of the Walsall defence.

Baxter then delivered a free-kick which saw a Collins header also saved. The action was

still frantic as five minutes of added time was announced with yet more crosses from the home side and after some committed defending, the final chance saw O’Connor slice over the crossbar.

At the final whistle there was applause from all corners of the ground after a full-blooded and entertaining game.

Blades boss Nigel Adkins felt Saturday’s point against Walsall was well deserved.

Jose Baxter cancelled out Tom Bradshaw’s opener at the Banks’s Stadium, as the Blades left the Midlands with a share of the spoils, in a game that could have gone either way. Reflecting on the stalemate, Adkins commented: “The lads have show character again. We started positively before Walsall got a grip of the game as the first-half progressed.

Walsall overloaded the midfield and got too much of the ball, we tried to be positive and go with two in there, but they showed they are very comfortable and capable in possession. But we showed a terrific spirit and resolve and Dean Hammond covered an unbelievable amount of ground, whilst defensively we put

our bodies on the line time after time. George Long made a couple of saves, but we had chances too.”

The Gaffer, who felt two or three big decisions that could have turned the game in United’s favour went against his side, added: “The second-half was an open affair they had chances and scored first but we showed good determination and got an equaliser quickly before having chance to win it in what was an end-toend finish. We think we should have had two penalties, they hit the post, so it was an entertaining game and probably a fair result.

Both goalkeepers were excellent, they matched each other save for save and their contributions were another reason the game finished as a draw.”

OWLS NEWS2015/16 WEDNESDAY BACK ON TURNAROUND PLEASES BOSS TRACK IN DERBY CLASH Wednesday came from behind to beat Huddersfield 3-1 in a hard-fought derby clash as the Championship resumed following the international break.

A tepid first half gave way to a much improved second in which Sean Scannell gave the visitors the lead. But a quick-fire double from substitute Lucas Joao and then Kieran Lee put the Owls in front and Joao applied the finishing touch in stoppage time.

The late drama was a world away from a bland start, with Ross Wallace the Owls’ most promising outlet in the early throes of a game that took a while to warm on a bitterly cold Sheffield afternoon.

The winger saw plenty of the ball and threaded one accurate feed through to Fernando Forestieri, whose diving header fell just wide.

Huddersfield offered little in response but when they did 20 minutes in, a long range drive from Scannell sent Keiren Westwood down smartly to save with his legs. The pattern

remained the same in a low key opening to a contest that certainly needed a spark after the break.

Joao was introduced for the resumption but it was Forestieri who caused a problem immediately after the whistle, pouncing on a loose Dean Whitehead backpass and forcing Joe Murphy into evasive action. But on 54 minutes, Huddersfield scored against the run of play. Kyle Dempsey picked out Scannell with a curling cross and the former Palace man glanced a perfect header beyond Westwood.

The goal stirred Wednesday into life and they went close with an immediate response as a Wallace shot looked destined for the far corner but Whitehead was back on the line to clear.

The Owls ramped up the pressure – Lewis McGugan and Gary Hooper came on from the bench – and a fierce goalmouth scramble saw Atdhe Nuhiu go down in the area but the referee was unmoved. Huddersfield broke in the next

attack, though, and nearly put the game to bed but Westwood made a superb close range block from Emyr Huws. Back came Wednesday and Hooper failed to get a connection on a Daniel Pudil cross before they finally got the breakthrough on 77 minutes. Forestieri did wonderfully well to ghost down the left and shoot only for Dempsey to hoof off the line – but Joao was on hand to fire the rebound home. Hooper then might have won it with a blistering drive that flew into the Kop but Lee went one better nine minutes from time. Forestieri was again the architect and in similar fashion to the leveller. This time he was thwarted by Murphy but Lee was the man of the moment in the right place at the right time to stab into the back of the net.

Still there was time for more and in the third minute of stoppage time, Joao delivered a marvellous hit over and beyond the despairing Murphy to seal victory.

Carlos Carvalhal said that Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town was all about the team after the Owls came from behind to grab the three points.

Carvalhal said: “Today we showed that we are a team and by that I mean the players, the coaching staff and our massive fans. We made three changes during the game and it helped us to win. The first half was not good for either team, and then we were disappointed to concede the goal, but after that everyone contributed to us getting the result, and justice was done.

“Hooper, Joao and McGugan did well when they came on and Keiren Westwood at

the back helped us win as he made one very important save to keep the score at 1-0.”

The Owls’ head coach also had some positive news on the injury front as they look forward to a busy festive schedule.

Wednesday face a hectic calendar of eight games between now and the end of 2015. Carvalhal added: “We didn’t have a full group in training at the start of the week, but now we have players coming back. Bannan and Turner will join us again next week and Alex Lopez is also on his way back, this is a big help as we need to use the full squad during the busy schedule.”
