Leger legends set to ride into Doncaster

Record-breaking jump jockey A P McCoy heads up a long line of racing legends who will take part in Doncaster Racecourse’s Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival to raise money for charity. The iconic festival kicks off with a bang when retired celebrities of the saddle dust off their breeches and return to action in the feature event, the Leger Legends Charity Race which takes place during the St. Leger opening day on September 9. This year will see 20-time champion jockey A P McCoy, who retired in April, compete in the flat race over the straight mile to raise money for the Northern Racing College in Doncaster and The Injured Jockeys Fund, which has two rehabilitation facilities for injured jockeys. Watching the race will be thousands of interested spectators including HRH The Princess Royal, patron of The Injured Jockey’s Fund. First run in 2010, the race has grown rapidly in stature whilst capturing the attention of the national racing media. The likes of Mick Kinane – rider of one of the greatest horses seen in recent memory,

Sea the Stars – and the most successful lady jockey of all time, the USA’s Julie Krone, have both won the Leger Legends accolade. This year the race is being sponsored by J2O Spritz, a new adult soft drink launched by Britvic earlier this year. Kieran Gallagher, executive director at Doncaster Racecourse, said: “We are delighted to have teamed up with J2O Spritz for this prestigious event, which has become a key feature of the iconic St. Leger festival. This year it has attracted one of the greatest racers of all time, A P McCoy, and his participation looks set to attract thousands of racegoers to Doncaster on September 9. “This year we’re using the race as an opportunity to raise money for two very worthwhile causes. Northern Racing College is a vital training facility for the horseracing industry, while The Injured Jockeys Fund has assisted the rehabilitation of dozens of injured jockeys from all over the North of England.” The Ladbrokes St. Leger Festival takes place this year at Doncaster Racecourse from September 9-12. The J2O Spritz Leger Legends race forms the centrepiece of day one, which is followed by the glitz and glamour of DFS Ladies’ Day on September 10. The penultimate day of the festival attracts some of the most prestigious racing of the week, with the long-established Socialites E-Cigarettes Doncaster Cup Day taking centre-stage, before the Ladbrokes St. Leger Stakes brings the four-day bonanza to a dramatic climax on September 12.

Derek expressed his concern that this is a great problem for disabled people and also older people. Often pavements are blocked and people cannot get through on their Mobility scooters/Wheelchairs and even have to walk into the road to get through. This was also highlighted just a

FLOOD PROTECTION SCHEME A leading contactor has now been appointed to develop one of the largest flood protection programmes in the UK. Carillion has been named as the contractor chosen to carry out the works to enhance the protection of Sheffield’s Lower Don Valley from major flooding. The scheme, a £19 million flood protection project on the River Don over an eight kilometre stretch between the Wicker and the M1 motorway is already well advanced. Channel maintenance works are already underway and design work, planning approvals and site preparation are close to completion for the physical defences. Sheffield City Council is leading the project, and is working in partnership with Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and the Environment Agency. The Chamber of Commerce is chairing a BID steering group and will keep all stakeholders regularly updated about the programme of works. The project is funded by public sector funding from DEFRA and the Environment Agency, plus an annual contribution from over 250 organisations through a Business Improvement District (BID). Flood Defence Project This is the first flood defence project in the UK to incorporate a BID as a means of funding a capital scheme. Similarly, this is the first BID in the UK to be used to fund any type of capital construction project, as opposed to traditional service-oriented BIDs like the one that is due to be delivered in the city centre. Councillor Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Sheffield City Council, said: “Carillion have been appointed to lead on this vitally important work in the Lower Don Valley. As we saw in 2007, flooding devastates communities and can ruin homes and businesses. The Council is absolutely determined to do all we can to reduce the risk of flooding. “Taking account of climate change over the next 50 years, around 6,000 households and 2,000 businesses in our city will be at increased risk of flooding, so we have to get ready now. This could cost the local economy up to £1 billion as well as proving catastrophic for residents and businesses.

“The new flood defences will raise the standard of protection to a ‘one in 100 year’ event, which exceeds the insurance industry’s minimum requirements of protection. A key benefit of this project is that it should help businesses secure flood insurance and benefit from reduced insurance premiums and excesses. “This scheme will protect 500 businesses and 5,000 employees in the Lower Don Valley. Without this initiative jobs could be lost and valuable investment turned away from the city. “This is why I am delighted we are pressing ahead with this work. We will do our very best to reduce the risk of Sheffield flooding now and into the future.” As well as helping to protect properties from flooding, improvements and maintenance along the River Don will also improve the habitat for wildlife. Cllr Fox added: “This programme is a unique investment opportunity which will give Sheffield the best possible chance to become more resilient to flooding and the effects of climate change. “I look forward to progressing these ambitious schemes in the years to come.” Martin Black, Carillion project manager said: “Carillion is delighted to have been appointed to carry out this high profile and important project. This is a complex programme of work and once complete it will provide protection from flooding for hundreds of businesses which employ around 5,000 people in the area. “This is part of our continuing relationship with Sheffield where Carillion has a major presence through our work on the BRT Tinsley Link and our customer experience centre.” Work on the Lower Don Valley scheme will begin later this summer and will take around 18 months to complete. Some roads may be affected by the work and any diversions or changes to traffic routes will be publicised in advance. The Council will work very closely with local businesses to minimise disruption during the work. The campaign to save the healthy trees on Rustlings Road has resulted in a petition with over 11,000 signatures. Despite this, in a full council debate, councillors voted not to take any action and continue with the felling. The council are, however, going to hold the next Tree Forum 2 September 2015 –

5-7pm at the Town Hall where a range of experts will be available to take questions from the public and debate the council’s policies (see links below). Make no mistake, the trees in any part of Shefﬁeld are at risk. What started on Rustlings Road has now become a city wide campaign. We are asking Councillor Fox to commission a Tree Strategy for Shefﬁeld and apply the precautionary principle ie to halt the felling in the meantime.

JESSICA ENNIS-HILL RETURNS TO LIGHT THE NIGHT FOR WILD- WEST THEMED WOODLAND WALK Shefﬁeld’s golden girl, Jessica Ennis-Hill is set to support her local cancer hospital this October as she joins Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s annual sponsored woodland walk. London 2012 Olympic Heptathlon Champion, Jessica, is encouraging people of all ages to help her ‘Light the Night’ at the cancer charity’s magical walk through Ecclesall Woods on the 3rd October to raise essential funds for Weston Park Hospital. Now into its fourth year, the popular event, which Jessica attended back in 2013, invites entrants to enjoy a 4.5k walk through the local beauty spot alongside friends and family. New for 2015, the cancer charity is inviting walkers to embrace the wild-west neon theme and step out in their neon bights alongside other supporters for one vital cause. Charity Patron, Jessica will be ofﬁcially starting the walk on the evening of the 3rd October and urging those who sign up to raise as much sponsorship as possible to enable the charity to continue funding life-changing projects at Weston Park Hospital. Jessica said, “Taking part in Light the Night is a fantastic way to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. As many as one in two people will be affected by cancer by 2020, so it’s really important we all do what we can to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer

With the increasing trend in UK holidays, many of us are taking the car to the seaside! However there are a number of pitfalls you should be aware of before leaving home!

Fatigue Many drivers do not regularly sit behind the wheel for several hours at a time. it’s easy to forget that driving for long spells can be a very tiring experience, and you should plan your journey to take this into account. Fresh air, exercise or turning up the radio may help for a short time but it is more effective to: • Break a journey over 3 hours with a 20 minute break - on longer journeys, take a break every 2 hours or so. Frequent short stops (of at least 20 minutes) are better than one long stop • Avoid heavy meals and alcohol before driving • Counter sleepiness by taking a short nap (up to 15 minutes) or drink 2 cups of strong coffee. • Remember that it’s illegal to stop on the motorway hard shoulder, except in an emergency

Electronic Key Fobs It’s easy to lose your car keys in sand on the beach, or take the remote control for a swim and then find that car doors won’t open. • Salt in seawater can ruin electric circuits and render transponder keys useless. • Most cars will have an alternative method of entry if the remote key fails – check the handbook - but it’s better to keep keys safe and dry in the first place. • Always try to take a spare set with you, and ensure they are kept totally separate from your main key! Tyres & Punctures Check your tyres carefully before you set off- many delaers offer a free inspection service, which is well worth making use of! High temperatures aggravate existing damage to the rubber. Under-inflation adds to the problem, causing friction and more heat which can prove too much for weak spots, causing punctures and blow-outs. • Check tyre condition and pressures, adjusting for extra load if appropriate. • Check caravan tyres for cracking and renew damaged tyres before use.

SUMMER FUEL SAVING • If you have to carry luggage on the roof, use a roof box to reduce drag. Alternatively load luggage on a roof rack as low as possible and wrap tightly in plastic sheeting. • If you are staying in one place for your holiday, take the roof rack or box off when you get there – you’ll save fuel on day trips. • Open windows cause extra drag. Try air vents ﬁrst particularly on a motorway. • Once air conditioning has cooled the inside of the car, you may be able to turn it down or off. Don’t run the air conditioning if doors or windows are open. • Increase tyre pressures if carrying extra passengers or heavy luggage (Check the handbook). • Using a windscreen shade and opening up the car as soon as you get back to it will help to cool the inside.

Overheating At this time of year, sadly, congestion and queuing can be expected. You need to be aware of the possible problems your car can face sitting on ahot motorway in the sunshine! High temperatures can aggravate cooling system problems too. Low coolant level, leaking hoses and broken electric cooling fans can all result in overheating and expensive damage. If the fan’s broken it will soon become apparent when you meet slow moving trafﬁc and engine temperature soars. • Check the coolant reservoir level regularly • Look out for wet or white staining on coolant hoses • Check the fan by running the car to normal temperature and allowing the engine to idle for

Loose chippings Surface dressing – laying tar covered with loose chippings – helps preserve roads and improve skid resistance, but is also a cause of cracked headlamp glasses and windscreens, and damaged paintwork. Keep your distance and drive within posted speed limits to reduce the risk of damage.

Fire Verges and embankments can become bone dry, and a smouldering cigarette butt could be all that it takes for roadside grass to ignite – in previous hot summers we have seen mile after mile of blackened motorway verges. Roadside fires endanger the countryside, wildlife, and put motorists at risk because of the obvious danger from smoke reducing visibility as well as congestion as emergency serices tackle the blaze. Tractors Tractor drivers often have sound-proofed cabs or wear ear protectors, so they may not hear approaching cars. Tractors don’t have to be fitted with brake or indicator lights unless used at night so in daylight be prepared for them to stop or turn without warning. Glare • Sun glare causes many accidents, particularly under clear skies at dawn or dusk. • Keep a clean and unscratched pair of sunglasses handy. Avoid lenses which darken in strong sunlight – the windscreen filters out UV light so the glasses will change only slowly. • Clean the windscreen regularly, inside and out, to remove smears, which will catch sunlight and impair vision. • Renewing worn or damaged wiper blades will also help to improve vision

HAYFEVER & DRIVING Hayfever is particularly bad in the summer and if you sneeze at 70mph you lose your vision for as much as 100 metres. • Only take medication which doesn’t cause drowsiness • Get someone else to drive if you are having a particularly bad hayfever day • Keep tissues close to hand • Slow down and drop back if you’re about to sneeze • Wear sunglasses to block out bright sunlight • Close windows and air vents to reduce pollen grains in the car

IS THIS THE DEATH OF THE PINT GLASS?

New research released today to coincide with Britain’s biggest beer festival, the Great British Beer Festival in London, shows the half pint glass is now the most popular way to drink beer. The survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and undertaken by independent research company YouGov, shows that 34% of drinkers opt for a half pint glass when trying a new beer, whereas a joint 26% opt for a pint glass or third of a pint glass. CAMRA say this shows people are opting to drink less, but be more adventurous in their choices, “With more than 1,200 breweries in the UK, and more beer styles being brewed than ever before, Britain has seriously got the beer bug. People are becoming more open to trying new beers and moving away from the mentality of drinking pint-after-pint of the same brew. Particularly for stronger, more full ﬂavoured real-ales such as barley wines, or strong porters and stouts, a half or third of a pint is a much more

sensible option and allows people to try a range of beers without drinking past their limits.” Tim Page, CAMRA Chief Executive. The surprising result that the third of a pint was equally as popular as the pint glass has prompted CAMRA to encourage people to give the size a go and try a number of different beers at the Great British Beer Festival taking place at Olympia this week. CAMRA ‘Real Ale Trails’ have been made a key part of the festival and encourage people to try speciﬁc beer styles in third of a pint measures – all as part of the ‘beer explorer’ theme of this year’s event. The research also showed that people believed the best place to try a new beer for the ﬁrst time was at a beer festival (41%) or secondly at a pub (37%), whereas trying beer at home was favoured by just 5% of people. “Particularly at events like the Great British Beer Festival, people are as interested in tasting as they are in drinking – and the best way to try the widest range of

beers is to opt for a smaller sized glass. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young, old, male or female, if you’re really interested in trying what’s on offer at an event with over nine hundred different real ales, international beers, ciders and perries, then it makes sense to opt for a half or a third.” Tim Page added. CAMRA’s survey builds on calls by its members for pubs to encourage sampling of real ale and responsible drinking by not charging a disproportionate price for a half pint, compared to a pint. PICCOLO’S? BELLISSIMO!

I’m sure anyone reading this has walked past a restaurant and thought ‘I really fancy that place,’ but never actually found the time or funds to go. This was certainly the case for me with ‘Piccolo’s’. With its romantically lit tables and rosy cheeked, cheerful diners, I always said to anyone and everyone who would listen to me that I wanted to try it. In fact, I had definitely started to annoy my friends. Making it more mysterious to me is its enticing description of “Alternative Italian Restaurant”. How can you make an Italian Restaurant ‘alternative’ I always wondered? Let me enlighten you. The owner Hussein Kamkar is originally from Iran, but grew up in Italy. He came over to study civil engineering at the University of Sheffield and got a part time job in hospitality. He loved it so much he did a complete U-turn in his career and switched to a catering course. Having served nearly ten years in the hospitality industry myself, I have found that you need a certain personality to survive, and what’s more, to truly enjoy it. Mr Kamkar has been at the restaurant for almost twenty years. I found out why his business has thrived for almost two decades, owing not only to his ability to make you feel like old friends, but also down to the exceptional cuisine. To start, I went for butterflied king prawns cooked in a white wine and garlic sauce. It was utterly delicious. Perhaps not the choice for those on a first date.

But, if you’re not, absolutely do it. And do you know what, even if you are…still do it. This was one of the priciest starter options, coming in at £8.90 but it is well worth it. And if this is too steep for your budget, the other equally appealing options start at £5. Admittedly as a student, I am more used to prawns that are either battered in the form of scampi or pre-packaged sandwiches, but I like to think I know my prawns. My starter did not disappoint, with the sauce being complimented by the melt in the mouth consistency of the perfectly cooked and sizeable beauties. Whilst waiting for our mains I used the time, which was neither too short to arouse suspicion or too long to make me eat my weight in delicious olive bread, to take in my surroundings. The bottom ﬂoor was fairly full for a Tuesday night and I’m assured by the owner that it is a full house over the weekend, with booking strongly advised. My dining partner notes that the staff are so relaxed its like “being at your parents evening when you know you’ve done well.” I had that tantalising moment when you get very excited as you think you see your meal, and the beautiful moment when it actually is your order. Rather than the indescribable level of disappointment when it’s the couple next to you who will be receiving irrational contempt for the rest of the evening. I ordered the chicken in Napoli sauce infused with red wine and chillis, reasonably priced at £14.90. With the beautifully cooked chicken occupying an unbelievably large part of your plate and a giant’s handful of handmade wedges you think you’ll never manage it. But somehow, I achieved it, and I have faith in you too. We’re

basically athletes. The tomato and herb infused sauce was just so depressingly far from my own multiple attempts when carefully seasoning my own tomato sauces. My dining partner chose a cheaper option of ‘Fettuccine Mari e Monti’ at £11.90. For those of you who aren’t not fluent in Italian, this is pasta ribbons tossed with sautéed king prawns and other delicious additions. This was also of a high standard with more prawns than she knew what to do with, a rare treat as most restaurants seemingly guard their protein portion sizes with their lives. Noticeable was the genuine interest from the staff as to whether we were enjoying our meal. This wasn’t just the case for us, the attentiveness of the staff to all customers was apparent. “It’s like a family,” Mr Kamkar says, “People come in here and it is like they become a part of my family.” And I believe him. To finish off this already satisfying meal, I opted for the limoncello cheesecake. And yet again they were not shy with portion sizes. It was drizzled with a fantastically complimentary jus, which meant I had no real option but to finish it all, for the good of mankind really. Overall, in all aspects Piccolo’s excelled and exceeded my originally high expectations. A perfect choice for most occasions I can think of. Thoroughly enjoyable or, humour me, ‘bellissimo!’

Henry has years of experience in pub management in London for Greene King so brings great experience into their joint venture. Says Henry, “We ﬁrst saw the Crown & Glove before the refurbishment and fell in love with the pub and the area, close to some of the best scenery in the country with the Peak District on the doorstep.” It is a traditional pub which Punch have refurbished most sympathetically. As Henry says, “ The division of Tap Room and Bar has been retained so the original character remains, while the alterations and decoration add to the ambience.” The Crown & Glove is one of

the most renowned pubs in an area that attracts many visitors and after this refurbishment it is a venue well worth visiting and not just for the great views of the distant city lights from the Beer Garden. Henry & Kitty are concentrating on three main offerings, Food, Coffee and Real Ale. Now serving a full menu which will be home cooked with locally sourced, freshly produced ingredients. Daily Specials will be available and the meals can be accompanied by a great selection of coffees, real ale and wine. Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

A much more difficult session this week, although back at Gawsworth Fisheries, so it wasn’t all bad as this place is beautiful! I arrived early again, a matter of minutes after the gates had opened to find a car park filled with overnight anglers which didn’t bode well. Packing the barrow and walking onto the lake, in truth, I had only two of three options where I could get lines into the water and have a fair chance of some water in front of me, so chose to sit in ‘cat corner’ at the dam end of the lake and use just two rods to try and find some fish, as far away as I could get from everyone else. A few pouches of boilies were fired out towards a reed line, and a few into open water, before I set about tackling up. If you have read many of my blogs, you will know I’m not a ‘rig tart’, believing that a sharp hook and simple rig, baited with quality offerings, and dropped in the right place will be far more successful than anything more complicated. this week with the slightest adjustment to see if it worked differently. So what is different? I usually fish a KD rig or just a simple hair with my bottom baits, but I’ve been getting some curious hook holds which have seen my hook all over the place in the mouth. All I’ve done is to add a small piece of shrink tubing on the bend of the hook so that my baits come off the bend rather than the shank, and made the hair a tiny bit longer; that’s it, nothing technical, but I think it did make a difference… I was warned by a fellow angler that things were slow, and I had nothing in the first few hours as I waited for fish to switch on to the bait and start feeding. I knew there were fish present, I could see them rolling over the bait, and was getting an odd line bite, but I wasn’t catching, and neither was anyone else! Eventually, a short series of bleeps indicated some interest, and I lifted the rod expecting a bream; it wasn’t however, and an ambitious rudd (or hybrid?) came quickly to hand… having taken an 18mm boilie! I had a couple more, then a bream or three, before the swim became very quiet indeed. I topped up the bait, and sat back to wait. As a fairly regular carp angler, I’m not naïve enough to think I never get ‘done’ by wily fish which dump the bait without any indication, but a subtle lift of the bobbin, a gentle flex of the rod tip and a single bleep told me that this time, I’d got it right. I’m convinced that using the usual rig, I would’ve missed this fish, but the tweaked rig found a hook hold and I commenced battle with a feisty low double which just wouldn’t give up! After almost ten minutes,

a dark common lay safely on the mat, the hook was removed, antiseptic applied, and the ﬁsh returned safely. It began to rain, and so my day came to a close. I’d landed eight ﬁsh, including a solitary carp, but most importantly, all had been hooked in exactly the same place; my hook found purchase in the centre of the bottom lip every time. Was

this down to the changes I’d made? Did it really make a difference? I’m sure that in this instance, it did, and the tweaks had a positive result; will it be the same next time? I have no idea, but that’s why it’s called ‘ﬁshing’, and not ‘catching’! We just keep learning….

DISAPPOINTING START TO THE SEASON FOR THE MILLERS Chris Maguire and Aidy White were asked to provide the ammunition from the wing back positions while Grant Ward, arguably the Millers’ standout performer in pre-season, was rewarded with a slot in the Millers’ engine room. There was familiarity in the forward positions with Danny Ward shrugging off an ankle knock to play alongside Derbyshire, who has been amongst the goals in the pre-season campaign. Following a slow opening by both sides, the Dons made a fairytale start when they broke the deadlock on five minutes. Following a quick break, Bowditch and Ben Reeves combined smartly to expose Halford on the left flank before the former drilled a dangerous centre which Roos was unable to cut out and Sam Gallagher looked to force the ball home but it was blocked by a retreating defender but Hall was on-hand to poke the ball into the unguarded net. However, the visitors joy proved shortlived as Rotherham equalised with their first foray of note on 13 minutes Maguire showed great tenacity to win a corner and the ex-Wednesday winger floated a superb centre from the resultant set-piece and Derbyshire ghosted away from the attentions of his marker in the six-yard box to glance a superb header from point blank range into the heart of the MK Dons goal. Minutes later, in a carbon-copy of the

equaliser, Derbyshire was inches away from connecting with another Maguire corner with the visitors defence at sixes and sevens but they managed to bundle the ball clear before the ex-Forest hitman was in the thick of the action as he came within a whisker twice in a matter of minutes of giving Steve Evans’ men the lead. Firstly, Halford’s perfectly weighted pass saw Derbyshire escape the offside trap to race clear and his snap effort was pushed onto the bar by David Martin and the ball looped invitingly into the path of White, who looked a certain scorer but he fluffed his lines when he screwed his effort wide despite having the goal at his mercy. Moments later, a defensive lapse by the Dons presented Derbyshire with another opportunity but Martin stood up tall to block his effort as he looked to round the visitors’ keeper before Derbyshire rose highest to meet White’s centre in the Millers’ next attack but his header cleared the crossbar. Despite their superiority, the Dons stunned the home faithful by regaining the lead just before the half hour mark. Following a switch of play, Spence got the better of White on the right flank before whipping in a low centre which seemed to take a deflection of a retreating Collins to wrongfoot Roos and the ball squirmed into the home net. Minutes later, Spence turned from hero to villain as he became the first to see yel-

low for flattening Derbyshire just seconds after Reeves cynically hauled over Danny Ward to prevent a quick home counter attack before the visitors took a stranglehold on the proceedings by extending their lead on 36 minutes. There looked little danger until Halford’s driven backpass put Thorpe in trouble and Reeves pounced on the loose ball before advancing menacingly to the edge of the box and he bided his time to deliver a tantalising centre which saw Bowditch nip infront of his marker to bundle the ball into the corner of the net. The visitors missed a gilt-edged chance to seal the deal before half-time when Hall cut inside to slip a fantastic ball into the path of Gallagher, who bared down on Roos, but he dragged his shot wide of the target when he really should have done better. With half time approaching, Kyle McFadzean became the next to incur the wrath of referee Nigel Miller as he cynically hauled over Maguire just outside the box to earn a caution and Newell almost made them pay from the resultant free-kick with a rasping effort which was arrowing towards the top corner before Martin’s late intervention. At half-time, Evans looked to breathe new life into the Millers by making a double substitution but the afternoon almost took another cruel twist for the home side soon after the interval when Reeves got the better of Collins but floating a delicate centre which had Roos and Thorpe in a daze forcing the latter to head clear but the ball whistled narrowly past his own upright. Just before the hour mark, Newell showed fleet of foot to get the better of Hall to embark on a forceful run which ended with a drilled effort which was

The second half began frantically by both sides, with the game really opening up. Clarke was once again played through,

Rovers produced chances of their own, Williams was just a whisker away from getting on the end of Harry Forrester’s ﬁne low ball. Andy Butler had a good opportunity, he got on the end of Forrester’s free-kick, but he was unable to guide his header on target. Bury then had another fantastic chance, forward Clarke was sent through in space, he found substitute Jacob Mellis, but a combination of the Stuckmann, Butler and the post denied Bury the lead. Rovers had two penalty appeals turned away with eight minutes remaining,

However after large confrontations and much discussion, Bury restarted the match and Rovers allowed striker Clarke to walk the ball into the goal to level the scores once again, in what concluded a dramatic opening day of the season.

ROTHERHAM United slipped to a disappointing opening day home defeat at the hands of newly promoted Milton Keynes Dons, who toasted their first ever game at Championship level with a victory. In an enthralling first half, Matt Derbyshire cancelled out Rob Hall’s early opener and the Millers were made to pay for missing a host of first-half chances as Jordan Spence and Dean Bowditch gave the Buckinghamshire outfit a comfortable half-time lead. The Millers fought hard to get a foothold back in the clash but their hopes of a fightback ended when sub Lewis Baker smashed home a Dons fourth near the end. Following their encouraging pre-season both at home and north of the border, the Millers fielded eight summer recruits for their competitive debuts for the curtain raiser against Karl Robinson’s promoted outfit. Derby stopper Kelle Roos was handed the goalkeeping jersey while Joe Newell was thrusted into the fray just days after putting pen to paper on a permanent deal with the Millers from Peterborough United. Experienced defender Greg Halford was handed the skipper’s armband while Tom Thorpe and Danny Collins were asked to fill the central positions in a new-look back four.

Doncaster Rovers began the new League One campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bury in an end to end match full of drama at the Keepmoat Stadium. Quadruple Thorsten Stuckmann, Richard Chaplow, Andy Williams and Aaron Taylor-Sincliar were all handed their ﬁrst league starts in a Rovers shirt for the visit of Bury by manager Paul Dickov, with fellow new recruit Gary MacKenzie named on the bench. It was the visitors who made the brightest start, Chris Hussey tested Doncaster’s

German goalkeeper, Stuckmann with a low ﬁzzing drive, before Danny Mayor teed up Tom Pope moments later, but the striker couldn’t get his head on the end of the cross. Andy Williams had Rovers’ best chance early on, James Coppinger played a neat ball to him in the box, but he could only slice his shot over the crossbar. The visitors had another chance in the 21st minute, Bury caught Rovers on the break and Mayor ﬁred low and hard from the edge of the box, with the ball heading just inches wide of Stuckmann’s left post.

The Millers came close to grabbing a consolation when firstly sub Jordan Bowery’s dangerous centre was cleared from his own line by Spence, who hacked clear despite being under pressure from home runners before Halford headed over as he towered to meet Newell’s corner in the next phase of play.

BLADES NEWS2015/16 SICK TO THE GILLS BOSS BOLSTERS For the second consecutive season, the Blades suffered an opening day defeat in Sky Bet League One. In the ﬁrst competitive game of Nigel Adkins’ reign, United were disappointing as Gillingham netted three of their four goals from set-pieces. The conﬁrmed team news an hour before kick-off saw Long given the nod to start the season opener at Gillingham. The homegrown youngster played behind one of his former Academy team-mates, McFadzean, who was handed the leftback berth. New boys Sharp and Woolford also started, but Sammon had to be content with a place on the bench. In the Kent sunshine, the Blades wore the new macaw green change strip but were on the back foot for the opening ten minutes - Gillingham won two corners and lumped into two long throws, from the second of which they opened the scoring. Jackson provided the big throw and it was OSADEBE who was adjudged to have forced the ball over the line at the near post amongst a cluster of bodies. There was another nervous moment on nine minutes when an

interchange between Collins and Long saw the latter’s clearance charged down by Dack, before United went on the offensive. As the home side backed off, Basham almost got in and Adams attempted to nick the ball from the arms of Nelson before Sharp’s first chance on 18 minutes, but the ball trickled wide. On 28 minutes, an Adams run was blocked and as United appealed for a free-kick, Gillingham broke away and Williamson’s shot was deflected away for a corner, where Oshilaja won two headers, the second of which was cleared off the line by Sharp. For United, Freeman fired into the sidenetting and for the home side Dack curled over from distance as the game ebbed and flowed close to the break before more woe. An unnecessarily conceded corner resulted in OSHILAJA forcing the ball home from close range, again in a crowded penalty area. The Blades made a brighter start to the second period. Sammon replaced Baxter at the interval, which meant positional changes for Adams and Woolford, who delivered a corner from which Basham

went close from an acute angle. Gillingham remained an attacking threat, though. Dack’s free-kick saw Long parry and Oshilaja was wide with the rebound, moments later Norris should have done better with a back post header. Reed and Scougall were introduced with little over 20 minutes remaining as United still sought a way back into the game. On 76 minutes Murphy broke through the middle and shot from distance, but Nelson pushed away, whilst United’s penalty appeals were waved away when the Scottish winger fell under Jackson’s challenge. United’s hopes, however, were dashed with a third Gillingham goal on 82 minutes. Another set-piece saw a corner delivered from the right and the goal was credited to EGAN in another crowded box. Moments later Egan met another corner but headed over. To sum up United’s day, Murphy, clear on goal, watched his shot blocked by Nelson’s legs and Basham was crowded out by Dickenson as the goal gaped... and then, deep into injury-time, DACK cut in from the left and beat Long with an effort which found the corner of the net.

DEFENSIVE OPTIONS Nigel Adkins has increased his defensive options with the addition of an experienced international footballer, currently contracted to a Championship club. Canadian David Edgar joins the Blades on a season-long from Birmingham City and could make his debut against Morecambe in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening. The 28-year-old, who has won over 30 caps for his country since making his senior debut in February 2011, can operate anywhere across the back four, in addition to playing as a defensive midﬁelder. Speaking of his fourth

signing since being appointed as Blades boss, Adkins remarked: “David is the captain of Canada and has got plenty of experience at a higher level, including winning promotion to the Premier League with Burnley. “He is 6ft 2in, a big presence and his versatility will be useful as he can play at centre-half or in central midﬁeld.” Edgar joined Newcastle the age of 14 and moved to live with his grandmother in England. Prior to making his Magpies ﬁrst-team debut on Boxing Day 2006 against Bolton Wanderers, the versatile performer represented Canada in the World Youth

Championships. Having made 23 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, Edgar moved to Burnley in July 2009, signing a three-year deal with the Clarets paying a fee in the region of £300,000 for his services. During a five year stint at Turf Moor, he racked up in excess of 100 appearances, in addition to a brief loan spell with Swansea City. In June 2014, he signed for Birmingham City and ended last season on-loan at Huddersfield Town. This summer Edgar has featured for his country in a World Cup qualifier and made three starts for Canada in their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign.

GAFFER OFFERS NO EXCUSES Nigel Adkins offered no excuses following United’s opening day defeat against Gillingham. Two goals in each half at Priestﬁeld condemned the Blades to a 4-0 loss and speaking afterwards Adkins gave a frank and honest assessment of United’s performance. He remarked: “It certainly wasn’t the start we wanted. we have then gone and conceded three more goals from set plays. “At 2-0 we were still in the game, but conceding a third when we did crushed our hopes of a comeback.” Reﬂecting further, Adkins added: “The players, the staff and the Club all know we have to do much better than that if we want to be winning games of football. “We need a desire to win the ball in both penalty areas and we didn’t show enough of that on the day, for the fourth goal, the lad shouldn’t be even getting a shot in, let alone scoring. “We weren’t good enough, we accept that

and apologise, but full credit to Gillingham, they have deservedly won the game and got off to a great start.” Concluding his thoughts on Saturday’s disappointments, the Gaffer ﬁnished by saying: “We have got work to do and it is such a shame we have let such a strong travelling contingent down on he opening day. “Set-plays are massive in football and we have to do better, it’s simple really. We have worked well on the training ground, but it’s on the pitch where it matters and there is no hiding away from that fact.”

OWLS NEWS2014/15 FLYING START FOR OWLS CARVALHAL’S REACTION The curtain came up on the new Championship campaign and Wednesday posted a resounding 2-0 win over newly-promoted Bristol City. Two second half goals from Tom Lees – his maiden conversion for the Owls – and Lewis McGugan rounded off a composed performance at Hillsborough. But the score told only half the story as the Owls dominated throughout and were excellent value for the points. A glorious afternoon in Shefﬁeld saw the hosts come out of the traps with their intentions clear. Attacking the Kop in the ﬁrst half, Wednesday were in the driving seat and looked dangerous from the start.

McGugan and Atdhe Nuhiu linked up well to feed Marco Matias, who was a whisker away from close range contact. Ross Wallace caused continual problems down the right flank, delivering a series of crosses that rang alarm bells in the City box. One effort in particular almost bore fruit but Matias just failed to get a sweet connection after losing his marker. The Robins’ responded with skipper Aaron Wilbrham forcing Keiren Westwood in action before the Owls countered in an instant and the busy Matias dragged narrowly wide. But the best chance of the half fell to Alex Lopez, who was denied a debut goal from 12 yards by a fortunate deflection that took his fierce drive

over the bar. Wednesday continued their control after the break, with Jack Hunt proving a constant menace down the right flank. But it was from the left where the Owls finally profited. The influential Wallace swung over a deep corner and Lees climbed high to power past Frank Fielding. Then, on 70 minutes, the game turned completely in the Owls’ favour with two incidents in a minute and McGugan at the heart of both. First, the midfielder cleared a Wes Burns header off the line before motoring upfield to get on the end of a teasing Wallace cross and put Wednesday 2-0 up and out of sight.

A great start - and Carlos Carvalhal is keeping his feet ﬁrmly on the ground. The Owls turned in a dominant display to dispatch Bristol City 2-0 on Saturday to kick off the campaign in style. And Carvalhal has underlined the importance of taking the season step by step. He said: “I am happy, the supporters are happy, and that is all we can ask for after the ﬁrst game of the season.

“But I know that this is only the start, the ﬁrst run of a long marathon. I try to be calm after the game, win, lose or draw. “But right now I am happy for everyone, the players, the coaches, the chairman and, of course, our massive fans. “They created a positive environment today which always has a positive effect on the team.” With the Capital One Cup clash with Mansﬁeld on the near

horizon, the Owls’ head coach hinted there could be changes for Tuesday night. He added: “We will see how the players recover after today’s game. The game in the cup on Tuesday is important but we could take one player out or we could take more than one player out. “Or for example, someone who was not in the 18 today may start on Tuesday.”

THE RIGHT BALANCE

Tom Lees believes the Owls struck the right balance on Saturday to defeat Bristol City 2-0 on the opening day of the new term. Wednesday were in tune in all departments against the Robins and produced an accomplished display to post three welcomed points. Lees and Lewis McGugan were on target for the Owls after the break and the defender was delighted with the outcome. He said: “It’s full credit to the boys. We got a good performance, a good win, a clean sheet and I thought we got the balance right.

“We got the balance right with trying to be good on the ball and getting it right technically and then battling and ﬁghting for everything – the other side of the game. “We kept our shape and were disciplined. “A lot of work was done in the build-up to make us hard to beat and that paid off.” For Lees, the goal was his ﬁrst for Wednesday and came at the ideal time as the Owls were out to make a strong start to the campaign. The 24-year-old says it was a proud moment when his bullet header nestled into the back of the net to break the

deadlock. “I was delighted,” Lees said. “People were talking to me about adding goals to my game and I’ve been working on that all week, attacking balls into the box, and thankfully one went in for me. “It was a terriﬁc feeling, at ﬁrst I thought the goalkeeper might claw it out but when I saw the net ripple it was great and I was just so relieved for the boys because everyone has worked so hard. “We just needed the breakthrough and when it came, we felt we could kick on.”
