Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced: “Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain.

Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to New York. The weather ahead is good, so we should have a uneventful flight.

So, sit back, relax, and... OH...MY GOD!” Silence followed.......................

Some moments later, the captain came back on the intercom.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sorry if I scared you, whilst I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled hot coffee in my lap, you should see the front of my pants!”

From the back of the plane, a passenger yelled “For the love of Jesus you should see the back of mine!”

My boss called me.

“Why are you late?” he barked angrily.

“I’m stuck behind a group of bikers,” I replied.

“Can’t you just ask them to move over?” he asked.

“But they look aggressive,” I said, “and the barman hasn’t served them yet.”

Every time I see a loaf of Bread, I get a little bit sad.

Because I know those grains could’ve become Beer, but didn’t.

I can cut a piece of wood in half just by looking at it.

It’s true, I saw it with my own eyes.

There’s a new Supermarket near our house that’s recently opened. It’s got an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain. When you approach the milk aisle, you hear cows mooing and there’s a scent of fresh hay. When you approach the eggs, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The veggie department features the smell of fresh buttered corn.

I don’t buy toilet paper there any more.

Sheffield FC, the world’s first football club, is returning to the city at the Olive Grove Sports ground where the founders of Club developed the first set of rules and played their first games of football on the fields back in 1857.

The move to where it all began, which spawned the modern game leading to 350,000 clubs, 300 million active players and 1.6 billion fans, has been supported by Sheffield City Council. The authority helped reached an agreement for the land to be used on a lease basis.

The switch from Sheffield’s current home at Dronfield, north Derbyshire, features a three stage process over a number of years and comes on the day the club officially launches a worldwide funding campaign, which has already got the backing of some great footballing names, to raise £2m.

The first phase will see the creation of a playing area, maintenance of the area, a new driveway and fencing around the area. Phase two, which will be subject to future public consultation, planning and funding, will see the creation of a football site suitable for non-league standards, including, changing rooms, small stands and the infrastructure for fans.

Phase three will see the proceeds from the fundraising campaign used to develop a community and history centre celebrating the role the club has played in the beautiful game. It will feature a museum, classrooms, educational facilities and the original greenhouse of 1857.

The Club has worked closely with the committee of the Olive Grove Sports Club. The organisation will have a seat on the board of Sheffield FC. Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Tims said: “We really are establishing a new spiritual home for football on the original ground and, as a charitable foundation, we will continue to protect and preserve the world’s first football club, back where it all began.

“Sheffield FC has played football without a permanent home and its own ground for more than 140 years. Now it’s time to take the club back home to Olive Grove in Sheffield to where it all began.

We’re looking forward to working with the city, the local community and schools in developing our plans for the site.

“Let’s all remember, without Sheffield FC there would be no game as we know it today. So, the efforts of so many people and, in particular, the city council and Olive Grove Sports Club to make this happen should be applauded.

“We hope it will provide the impetus for people and football fans across the world to back our unique fundraising campaign and, of course, visit our original home adding to Sheffield’s appeal as a destination city.

“I have just returned from Europe where I briefed football clubs and organisations about our plans and the fundraising efforts. As a result a number of clubs – including Borussia Dortmund – have said they will financially support our campaign.”

Sheffield City Council has been instrumental in getting Club back to Olive Grove, creating a partnership between the football club and the sports club committee to facilitate safeguards, arrangements for existing users and a sustainable immediate future for the ground.

Councillor Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great to welcome Sheffield FC back to the city.

This is a boost for the club, the city and Olive Grove sports ground.

“While the club is known throughout the world as the oldest football club, they also do great work with local teams and schools, and are a real credit to Sheffield.

“We’re particularly pleased that the club will work closely with the existing committee at Olive Grove to secure the future of this important sports ground.”

Sheffield FC will, for the immediate future, continue to use the Coach and Horses stadium at Dronfield.

Last Friday (24/7), more than 40 local blind veterans and their guests celebrated Blind Veterans UK’s 100 year anniversary at the charity’s centre in Sheffield.

The charity’s Sheffield centre organised a day filled with different activities as well as a photography exhibition and a special high tea to celebrate the special occasion.

The photography exhibition was created within the charity to showcase the extraordinary talents of some of the veterans Blind Veterans UK supports. There are five categories veterans could enter, which includes portraits, landscape, black & white, create and floral.

The winners and runners up of each category are now touring England and Wales starting at the charity’s Sheffield centre.

One of the veterans who attended the celebrations last Friday is Colin Green. Colin, 78 and from Barnsley, joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1955 for National Service and served for two years in Cyprus.

Colin started to receive help and support from Blind Veterans UK in 2006 after he lost his sight overnight due to anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, a loss of vision from damage to the optic nerve.

Since he began receiving support, Colin has had IT training, cookery training at the Sheffield centre and has also received special equipment including colour detector, print scanner, liquid level detector to make tea.

Colin says, “Blind Veterans UK has changed my life. Confidence and achievement are the two key words.

“I give talks to new veterans once a fortnight at Blind Veterans UK’s Sheffield Centre because it’s good to hear advice about life after sight loss from someone who’s experienced it themselves.”

Sheffield centre Colin says: “It’s a great way for the centre to mark the anniversary and link to the charity’s other centres. My wife and I both enjoyed the day’s festivities together with all the other veterans from our area.”

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and visionimpaired ex-Service men and women, was founded in January 1915. The charity’s initial purpose was to help and support soldiers, sailors and airmen blinded in World War I, but the organisation

went on to support more than 35,000 blind veterans and their families, spanning World War II to recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan, regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight.

Today, Blind Veterans UK provides free services and help to veterans no matter what the cause of their sight loss, be it due to accidents, illnesses or medical conditions such as Macular Degeneration.

The charity currently provides rehabilitation, training, care and

recreational activities via its three centres (in Brighton, Llandudno and Sheffield) and a network of welfare staff spanning the UK. Blind Veterans UK’s Sheffield centre is a state of the art training facility with 12 bedrooms. It offers a range of rehabilitation and training courses for blind veterans living in the North of England. As well as introductory courses for new members, the centre offers training in IT, communications, mobility and independent living skills to help blind veterans recover their independence and discover a life beyond sight loss.

SUPPORT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN SHEFFIELD LAUNCHED

An exciting new scheme based on an Australian model to help budding entrepreneurs get their businesses off the ground is being launched in Sheffield city centre next week.

Sheffield City Council and the University of Sheffield have been working on small-scale meanwhile uses of buildings in recent years, but the aim now is to take this concept to the next level.

A launch event has been arranged for anyone interested in learning more about this scheme. It will be held in the Theatre Delicatessen (formerly Woolworths) on The Moor at 5.30pm on Thursday 30 July.

ReNew is based on the successful Renew Newcastle, Australia initiative led by Marcus Westbury, the celebrated writer, broadcaster, festival director and media maker. Marcus was invited to Sheffield by the University of Sheffield to share his knowledge and inspire others during a series of events last year.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin, from the University of Sheffield who is Chair of Re:New and Director of City Cultural Engagement, said: “We were truly inspired by Marcus during his visit to the city last year and I am delighted that by working with our partners in the city, we have come together to launch ReNew. “The project will not only transform and bring vibrancy to buildings in the city which otherwise would have stood empty or even derelict, it will give startup businesses a chance to flourish and hopefully increase footfall to the city in turn boosting the local economy.”

The launch of the Re:New project will provide greater support for business start-ups, artists and creatives looking for empty buildings in the city centre, with funding support up to £10,000 available.

“I would certainly urge anyone interested in starting up a small business to come along on 30 July to have a chat or check out the new web site to get more details about the support now available. We have checked the main obstacles for users and independent retailers and we will be aiming to minimise the issues restricting them.”

It is anticipated many more vacant or underused buildings in the city centre will become active, providing much needed footfall, spend and more varied activities to areas in transition, such as the Sheffield Retail Quarter site and Castlegate.

The aim is to allow new concepts to be tested on a temporary basis, which will hopefully lead to those businesses becoming established for permanent use elsewhere in the city centre.

Organisations in Sheffield have already begun to take on vacant units and transform them into vibrant businesses.

Martin Keyworth of ‘Truth or Dare’ took on a vacant unit at Charles Street previously known as Quicksilver Arcade.

In just five weeks Martin transformed the empty unit into a high quality barbers and tattoo parlour with a selection of designer T-shirts.

Crucial knowledge and guidance will be provided by a mentoring group involving partners from across the city, including the Council; University of Sheffield; City Centre BID; Culture Consortium; local landowners, developers and agents; established workspace providers; and independent retailers.

The group will be supported by a dedicated project officer and a new website (www.ReNewsheffield.co.uk) will act as a first point of contact and strategic voice for anyone interested in finding out more.

The Re:New project will be funded by the Council’s ‘Keep Sheffield Working Fund’, University of Sheffield and European Regional Development Fund through the North Sea Region, Interreg IVB, SEEDS (Stimulating Enterprising Environments for Development and Sustainability) project.

Breast cancer in women over 70 A national reminder campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer in women over 70 is scheduled to run from 13 July to 6 September 2015. The Be Clear on Cancer campaign will inform women over 70 that if they see any changes to their breasts they should see their doctor straight away.

Around a third of breast cancer diagnoses are in women over 70 – in Sheffield this equates to about 680 women per year.

NATIONAL EMERGENCY SERVICES MUSEUM The National Emergency Services Museum is the world’s largest joint 999 museum showing a small insight into all of our Emergency Services through hands-on learning with history. With around 35 vehicles on site, 3 floors of exhibits to explore, discover and learn including real Victorian Police Cells (including smells!) there really is something for all the family!

The South Yorkshire Fire Service Historical Society is the charity behind this museum and was formed by Firefighters from South Yorkshire in 1984. The aim of the Charity is to save and display the history of our Emergency Services as well as teach safety through hands-on learning.

The building was acquired by the society was acquired in 1982 and was set up as The South Yorkshire Fire Service

Historical Society. The building had stood derelict for many years and fire-fighters from the South Yorkshire Brigade began to refurbish the Victorian Police and Fire Station so that a permanent home would be found for the vast range of fire service related memorabilia that was sitting in attics and local fire stations all over the county. By August 1983 the museum was ready to open it’s doors. Though much work has been done, there is still a tremendous amount to be done to restore all the rooms to full use. Incidentally, the first job ever tackled was the eviction of squatters in the shape of a flock of pigeons!

The mission of the National Emergency Services Museum is to recognize and preserve the heritage of the Emergency Services and their contribution to the community, and to promote education of fire and life safety.

‘dronfest’ celebrates 16 years with it’s biggest line-up ever It’s 16 years ago since the Dronfield Charity Music Festival began and this year, continuing under the title of “Dronfest”, it once again returns to where it all began behind the Coach & Horses on Sunday 2nd August 2015.

This year, Dronfest are delighted to have secured headliners ‘Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders’ Finding fame originally with top 60’s band Amen Corner, he has gone on to perform with Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Gilmour, The Who, BB King, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck, Otis Rush, Phil Collins, Van Morrison, Gerry Rafferty, Sheryl Crow, Pete Townshend and hundreds more.

Believe it or not, Dronfest is listed on the same tour schedule as Madison Square Garden,and the Royal Albert Hall - and Andy is performing on his birthday!

Dronfest kicks off at noon and features ten acts on the main stage, with a further seven in the acoustic tent, with genres of music to everyone’s taste.

Also featured is Nigel Clark, lead singer and frontman of 90’s band ‘Dodgy’. Nigel has enjoyed plenty of chart success with songs such as ‘Staying Out for The Summer’, ‘In a Room’, ‘If You’re Thinking of Me’ and ‘Good Enough’ to

name a few.

As usual, the festival features many local (and a few not so local) musicians. The main stage offers Rita Payne, Mark Mathews and The One T’s, GONZO, Vigilante, The Julian Jones Band, Little BigWood, Ramble Gamble and Seven Tors.

Appearing in the acoustic tent are Andy Morley, Damon Downs, Anne Fotheringham, Emma Rossi, Our Saving Day and Sneakin’ Stupidity. (Full line-ups at www. dronfest.co.uk.)

This year’s event will raise money for St John’s Ambulance, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, Dronfield Cardio Club and Sincere Support, along with donations made to other smaller local groups and charities. Over the years the festival has raised almost £70,000 for local charities and groups and this figure is growing year on year.

As always the festival caters for all the family and there will be the obligatory bouncy castle & inflatable slide, face painting, ice cream and the children’s workstation as well as a treasure hunt for the young ones.

As for the adults there will various offerings of food & drink along with a variety of stalls, some of which include Tombola, Hair Stylists from Harley’s of Chesterfield, Clairvoyant,

Massages from the Nurture Clinic, and Henna tattoos. And of course, there are a selection of bars!

BARNSLEY DUO RAISE NEARLY £2000 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES Three charities will benefit after Barnsley buddies Carl Dundas and James Pooley have recently returned from a gruelling nine day bike ride, covering the famous 945 miles from Lands End to John o’ Groats!

The Motor Neurone Disease Association, Sheffield Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, and Ward P3 (Teenage Cancer & Young Adult Unit) of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital will each benefit from the friends’ efforts which raised almost £2000 in total!

The pals were supported by a local club fundraiser, a signed copy of Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” and a bottle of House of Commons whisky donated by Angela Smith MP, as well as bikes from Sheffield-based Cycle Boost, free

or reduced accommodation at the ten B&B’s visited en-route, and the efforts of 72 year-old support driver Colin Wadsworth, who came forward only days before the departure to offer his support.

Colin himself cycled the route in 2010 when only 67 years old!

The ride itself was completed in an impressive 84 hours of riding time, over nine days, with daily totals between 95 and 116 miles. There were the expected mechanical problems, with punctures, snapped chains, but the pals overcame these to maintain their progress.

The fifth and sixth days, on route from Blackburn to Paisley proved the most challenging, with a combination of driving rain, strong headwinds, and appalling roads and cycle lanes. Fortunately the weather improved towards the end, as the journey took them through the mountains around Glenmorangie and Loch Ness on the approach to John o’ Groats.

This was a fantastic effort by the boys, who are now planning a return in due course taking the opposite route!

A TENT FULL OF BAVARIA LANDS ON DEV. GREEN No longer is Oktoberfest something you have to head for Germany to experience as this year Sheffield is going Oktoberfest-mad.

Munich’s annual celebration of beer, bratwurst, singing and all round frivolity makes it’s way across the North Sea this summer bringing jovial scenes to the city centre.

The huge event, with a 1500 people tent, brigs a hop-soaked 5 days to Devonshire Green just off Division Street between Wedensday the 5th and Sunday th 9th of August With Sunday is a family day, complete with bratwurst-centred lunch options.

There will be so much beer, food and music that, it’s just like being in Munich! and after a few steins of the authentic brews on offer you might think you are.

The music is courtesy of real Bavarian Bands flown in from southern Germany and promising to have you dancing on the tables to hits like ‘Zikke Zakke’ and ‘Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit’ (don’t worry, there will be people there to help you).

Sheffield hardcore pack Bring Me The Horizon have announced the title and release date of their hugely anticipated new album. Titled “That’s The Spirit,” the group’s fifth studio album will be released on 11th September 2015, marking the second release with new synth member Jordon Fish. Preceding the bands biggest record to date “Sempiternal,” the two singles already released from the upcoming album suggest this is going to be their most accomplished record to date.

So, what do we already know about Bring Me The Horizon? Stemming from the Steel City, the five piece have unquestionably altered the industries perception on commercial hardcore. With four studio albums under their belt, the group’s first release, “Count Your Blessings” in 2006 was homage to brutal deathcore. With hits to include “Pray For Plagues,” “Black and Blue” along with “Liquor And Lost Love,” it’s more than impressive to witness the progression Bring Me The Horizon have gone since this first record. Commenting on the release in 2011, guitarist Lee Malia said: “We wrote that CD a lot faster. We didn’t have much time to write it. When we wrote it, we were obviously into it, but when we look back at it now there’s so much that could have been better.”

Fast forward two years to the release of the clan’s second album, “Suicide Season.” Having already gained a positive name for themselves across the international hardcore scene, Bring Me The Horizon’s second release showed a shift in style from their previous deathcore sound. In an interview with Metal Hammer magazine, vocalise Oli Sykes stated that the album was “100% different from Count Your Blessings. We experimented a lot more I think, more with other styles of music we all enjoy, using different instruments and technology, by bringing a lot of digital stuff to the table. Every track is different.”

This album received positive reviews from fans and critics alike, with singles “Diamonds Aren’t Forever” and “Chelsea Smiles” winning over deathcore and progressive hardcore fans alike.

2010 saw the group once again take a drastic turn with their musical style with the release of album number three, “There Is A Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It, There Is A Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret.” Musically, the album further develops the band’s previous material, drawing influence from the metalcore genre whilst also incorporating a wide variety of

experimentation to include symphonic and electronic influences, clean vocals and choir vocal samples.

Lyrically, the band described vocalist Oli Sykes’ writing to be “personal” and “darker that music on the previous albums.” Single “It Never Ends” tells the overwhelming story of the suffocation from the press whilst “Blessed With A Curse” indicates a mature nature to the group which previous albums have not highlighted.

2013 was the turning year for Bring Me The Horizon as they released their biggest album to date, “Sempiternal.” With a change to the line-up, Jordan Fish joined ranks to once again transform the overall sound of Bring Me The Horizon. Ex Worship member, Fish introduced a much heavier synth section to the group’s material, notably in tracks “Shadow Moses” and title track “Sempiternal.” This album saw the group achieve a number one position in the UK, not to mention global success. In 2013 the band performed “Sempiternal” on the main stage at Leeds and Reading Festival, whilst also blowing the back legs off Download Festival in 2014. Without a doubt the bands finest album to date, Oli Sykes and co’s transition from metal gods to alternative rock stars is one of the most inspiring genre transition within the music industry.

So…album number five. We’ve all been waiting on tender hooks for news on when this hugely anticipated record is going to drop…and it’s finally here. With a release date of 11th September 2015, “That’s The Spirit” promises to be even more epic than previous record “Sempiternal.” The group have already released two singles from the upcoming album, “Happy Song” and “Throne” which Jordan Fish explains reflects “the groups then current state of mind both musically and emotionally. It is one of the most straight forward songs we have ever recorded, but we felt that it was an obvious choice for the first single due to its immediate catchy-ness and level of energy.”

Bring Me The Horizon have announced a full American tour throughout October and November (why, o’h why don’t we live across the pond!!!) however are also performing at this year’s Leeds and Reading Festival. Main headline support to the mighty Metallica, this performance promises to be their most epic showcasing to date.

Leeds Festival will once again kick off in style this year as Dance To The Radio Presents The Welcome To Leeds Stage on Thursday 27th of August. The incredible Leeds based label will again be curating their own stage for all Leeds goers eager to get the weekend of music started!

Headlining will be none other than Leeds’ most raucous sons and veterans of the Main Stage, Pulled Apart By Horses. Having sadly had to pull their Leeds Festival performance in 2014 at the last minute, the band are chomping at the bit to provide one of the defining moments of the festival in 2015.

Essex rock ‘n’ rollers and Domino signees The Bohicas will also be on hand for a typically energetic set the same month as the release of their debut album ‘The Making Of’.

Youthful electronic-tinged four-piece VITAMIN will be on site showing exactly why they’re a band to watch out for whilst Leeds’ own guitar thrashing five piece Carnabells and Sheffield indie rockers RedFaces also join the fun.

Angler’s Corner with Clint Walker

A return to the River Derwent seemed like a good idea this week, so I packed up the lightweight kit, grabbed some bait and chucked it all in the van ready for a session on the same peg which defeated me last time out when I got smashed up three times! I’d respooled the reels, some 12lb Daiwa Tournament was a definite upgrade and surely capable of dealing with a double figure barbel, so I was confident of landing anything within the swim. I tackled up both of my rods in a similar manner, a heavy fluorocarbon hooklink, size 8 Vardis Gripper hook and weighed it all down with a two ounces of lead. The rigs were slung out to the right spot, and I sat back to wait…

After half an hour of inactivity, I thought I’d better check the bait, and started to reel in; snagged! Ahhh! I couldn’t shift it, and pulled for a break, knowing everything would drop up safely. The second rod was the same; solid, and again, I pulled for the break…what on earth was going on? It was snag city! By the time I’d lost six leads, it was time to pack up and replenish at the tackle shop, and I still hadn’t caught anything. I have no idea what has changed the bottom contours recently, as that swim is normally a haven fish and fairly clear, but it needs a good push through after rain to sort it out before I’ll venture back; either that, or get the float rod out next time!

Suitably restocked, I decided to head off to a swim on the River Dove. A short drive saw me arrive at an empty car park, unload the gear and trudge off into the ‘bush’. The banksides were well overgrown, most of it above head height, so I proceeded to burrow into the swim, leaving

a tunnel of crushed foliage behind me! The Dove is slightly more genteel than the Derwent, so lighter tackle can be used with ease. I chose to use just a single rod, and quickly set up a Kamasan maggot feeder which had been almost taped shut to slow the flow of maggots into the swim. The river didn’t look particularly inviting, but I was fishing on my day off, so I was going to fish!

I know this swim intimately, and dropped the feeder bang on the spot and tightened up; within seconds, the tip bent over as my double maggot hook bait was sucked up, and after a bare minute, a chubby little barbel was safely netted. Rested and returned, I cast again to the same spot, and again, the tip hooped over as a stocky wild trout hit the bait… awesome fun! The next two casts brought a perch and a grayling, so that made four species in four casts… sitting in the sunshine and catching pristine fish in perfect solitude… blissful.

Over the course of the next hour, it was fish-a-chuck fun with most of them requiring a landing net to get them in.

Trout, grayling, and small barbel just kept coming, but it all changed when I hooked a lively trout. As I reeled it towards, me, I was aware of a dark shadow behind the fish which materialised into a double figure pike and which hit the trout fair and square amidships! I lost it within seconds, and as usual, the presence of the pike curtailed any further action so I packed up and headed home.

I absolutely love the seclusion of the summer river, surrounded by undergrowth, shared with countless dragon flies, bird life and other mini beasts, I can’t think of a better way to spend a few hours. Although I didn’t catch any monsters, the sport was steady and fun, so I couldn’t ask for anymore; if you haven’t fished a river, grab yourself a small rod, a bucket of bait and go and explore…you’ll be glad you did!

I’M OLDER, WISER, MORE EXPERIENCED, SAYS SHARP Billy Sharp is keen to live up to his billing after signing on as a Blades player for a third time at the weekend.

The 29-year-old is a selfconfessed Blades fan and signed a two year deal with the option for a third after an undisclosed fee was agreed with Leeds United for his services.

“It feels amazing to be back, another dream for me,” said Billy.

“Last time when I came back I should have scored more but I don’t think I played enough. I went away, proved that I can do it, it is hard to explain, but I’m ready for this challenge. I’m older, wiser, more experienced and this Gaffer knows what I can do and I’m looking forward to what’s

coming.

“The Gaffer has shown great faith in me and I want to repay him by doing the job I have done for him at other clubs.

“I’ve been brought in to score goals, I will be judged on that, as every striker is.”

Sharp came through the United ranks before leaving for Scunthorpe United in 2005. He returned in 2007 and scored 13 times before moving on once more. “I want to be part of the squad that takes this Club back to the Championship. It would be special, the Gaffer has experience of getting teams promoted, he will get us going, if we can get momentum we will do really well,” added Sharp.

CONOR’S A GOOD LAVERY AUDITION EXERCISE OFF THE MARK Conor Sammon is treating his Blades loan as a season-long audition.

The powerful Irish striker arrived at Bramall Lane over the weekend as part of a double striker swoop that also saw Billy Sharp become a Blade once more.

Republic of Ireland international Sammon, 28, made his debut as a second half substitute in Sunday’s pre-season friendly with Newcastle United and later said: “It is a season-long audition for me - I need to impress to earn a new deal, hopefully here, if we are successful and I score goals, it would be a good scenario for me at the end of the season when I’m looking for a new deal.

“I know I’m here for the long run, I’ll settle in and get stuck into training and hopefully when we play Gillingham I will hit the ground running.

“I’m at a stage of my career that I need to playing games regularly and when a Club with the ambition of Sheffield United shows interest in me, I’m just delighted to get it sorted quickly and it was a bonus to be involved in a game straight away.”

Sheffield Wednesday coach Joao Cunha has underlined the benefits of the squad’s five-day training camp in Portugal.

The trip across Europe has incorporated primarily warm weather training that Cunha insists will serve as a sound platform for the season ahead.

He told swfc.co.uk: “The climate is excellent for the fitness levels of the players. We work them hard and give them recovery time, which is just as important as the training itself.

“When the weather is like this, it leads to everyone feeling good and good spirits.

“We have a lot of new players too so a pre-season trip such as this is the perfect way for everyone to get to know each other.

“The exercises have complemented the games and we will finish off on Sunday with a recovery session in the pool.

“We travel back to England on Monday and resume our normal training schedule at home as we build up for the start of the season.”

Wednesday striker Caolan Lavery struck his first goal of pre-season on Friday evening against Portuguese big-hitters Braga.

The striker profited from Stevie May’s ball over the top and rounded the goalkeeper before applying a calm finish into the bottom corner.

Lavery was pleased to get off the mark and told swfc.co.uk: “It’s always nice to get the goal. It was a great ball from Stevie and

“Every goal gives you confidence and hopefully I will get a few more in the coming games and take it into the season.

MAGUIRE MAKES THE SHORT TRIP TO THE MILLERS Rotherham United have completed their 11th signing of the summer after agreeing a deal with former Sheffield Wednesday forward Chris Maguire, subject to medical and Football League ratification.

The versatile striker, who can also play in a wide role, put pen-topaper this morning after agreeing personal terms, as boss Steve Evans continues to mould his squad ahead of the big kick off against MK Dons on August 8th.

Maguire left the Owls after a three-year stay at Hillsborough during the close season, making the short journey to Rotherham whilst also linking up with former teammtes Joe Mattock and Lewis Buxton.

The deal delighted boss Evans who told www.themillers.co.uk last week: “It is fantastic news that has

reached me in Scotland this morning that Chris Maguire has become a Miller,” beamed Evans.

“This young man is a player I have admired since his days at Aberdeen and he was a lad that was on my targeted list of players at the end of last season. We have had to be patient as we gave this young man the time to speak to a number of Championship clubs who wanted him to join them.”

Maguire made 46 appearances for Wednesday last season, including coming off the bench against the Millers at AESSEAL New York Stadium. He started his career with Aberdeen and also had spells with the likes of Derby County and Portsmouth.

Evans admitted that he has been a long time admirer of Maguire and pointed to his versatility as a factor in his decision to move for the 26-year-old.

“We love a player who can play in more than one position, and we all know that Chris Maguire can play as a striker or indeed a wide position, he has great qualities in both departments,” Evans continued.

“He joins what is already a talented squad and in the next week or so I would envisage that same squad maybe strengthened further.

“This has been a summer transfer window that has seen us with a very specific targeted approach for players. The focus, attention to detail, player references and what they will add to the Millers has been at the forefront of our thoughts in everything that we have done.

“Once again I must thank my Chairman Tony Stewart for his continued and everlasting support.”

GARY COUNTING DOWN

“When you’ve been out and frustrated for so long then you just enjoy been back playing football,” said the former Blackpool defender.

“When it comes down to the league starting then you develop a little edge about yourself and get excited and I’m counting down the days to the new season.

“I already feel at home. The first few days, the club have made me feel welcome and its been really easy to settle despite not knowing any of the lads previously.”

The Scot underlined the importance of a full pre season – including a trip to Portugal – when it comes to the rigours of a 46+ game season.

“I think pre season is massive to everybody regardless of injuries.

Everybody will tell you that its really important to get a good pre season in you because it gives you the building blocks for the rest of the season otherwise you’re always playing catch up,” said the Scot.

“You’ll find that if you don’t complete pre season then there’ll always be niggles throughout the season.

“I’m here to help out the boys and concede fewer goals than we did last season. I might try and grab a goal myself. But I’m here to communicate and help the other lads in the team. As a centre half, I’m here to not let the other team score, that’s my job, that’s what I’m paid to do.”

Gary MacKenzie admitted that he is counting down the days until the start of the 2015/16 League 1 season.
