SHEFFIELD THEATRES’ MY FAIR LADY RECEIVES NOMINATION IN PRESTIGIOUS WHATSONSTAGE AWARDS Sheffield Theatres is thrilled to announce that its production of My Fair Lady has been nominated for Best Regional Production at this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards.

The sensational sellout production of My Fair Lady, which was recently nominated for Best Musical Production in the UK Theatre Awards, ran from December 2012 to January 2013.

It tells the story of an unlikely romance between a flower girl and a professor and starred Dominic West (Othello, The Wire) and Carly Bawden (Whistle Down The Wind, Evita). It was

directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director, Daniel Evans.

Copley’s Column This week, all right-minded people will be mourning the loss of one of the world’s greatest men, Nelson Mandela, the man mainly responsible for ending the disgusting apartheid regime in South Africa.

A statement from another of my heroes, Muhammed Ali, himself a victim of racial abuse being refused service in a restaurant shortly after proudly winning an Olympic boxing gold medal for his country, on the grounds that it was a whites only establishment. I herewith quote his statement verbatim.“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Mandela. His was a life filled with purpose and hope; hope for himself, his country and the world. He inspired others to reach for what appeared to be impossible and moved them to break through the barriers that held them hostage mentally, physically, socially and economically. He made us realise, we are our brother’s keeper and that our brothers come in all colours.What I remember most about Mr Mandela is that he was a man whose heart, soul and spirit could not be contained or restrained by racial and economic injustices, metal bars or the burden of hate and revenge.

He taught us forgiveness on a grand scale. His was a spirit born free, destined to soar above the rainbows. Today his spirit is soaring through the heavens. He is now free forever.”It is a sad sign of the times that American film star Paul Walker, famous for his role in the Fast and the Furious, who died tragically in a road accident recently received ten times more postings on social network site Facebook than did Nelson Mandela.

On the home front, one of my favourite female artistes, Bev Brookes, appeared at the regular Thursday night at the Victoria and was excellent.

We were treated to a guest appearance from Phoebe performing her Debbie Harry tribute.

Phoebe was due to start a new life performing in Fuerta Ventura this week, but tragically, this has had to be put on hold as her partner, Rob, a delightful man collapsed on Sunday after

looking so well on a night out with me watching Junkyard Dog at the Yew Tree on Saturday night..

At the time of writing, Rob is under observation in the Northern General Hospital, and I am sure you will join with me in wishing him a speedy recovery. Sunny Daye, has returned from a successful spell performing in Puerto Banus, which has been very successful. Sunny is the most caring person I know and it is no surprise to me that she has rescued yet another dog and has found him a home. Sunny has qualities that make her the kindest human being on the planet and I am proud and honoured to be considered as one of her closest friends. She is also an excellent entertainer.

The official FIM World Indoor XTrial Championship is back in Sheffield with a brand new section ‘The Flavour of Sheffield’ The Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield will yet again play host to the ‘Worlds Number 1 Indoor Arena Trial’.

For the 19th consecutive year the best riders in the World will be descending on Sheffield on Saturday 4th January to battle it out over Martin Lampkin’s new sections to see who will become the ‘King of Sheffield’ for 2014.

There’s something special about Sheffield that keeps audiences coming back year after year. It’s much more than just an arena trial, from the moment the lights dim and the riders enter the arena you will sense that something very special is about to unfold. Sheffield is a fantastic night out for all the family and with four hours of adrenalin packed action from the very best riders in the world, you are definitely in for a fantastic Saturday night out.

Martin Lampkin has built a gigantic new section using the casting moulds that have produced some of largest iron ingots the world has ever seen. CW Booth from Sheffield have loaned Martin the castings weighing in at over 10 tons each and other steel making equipment to form this spectacular section titled The Flavour of Sheffield.

In addition there’s also a new Red Bull section featuring two huge footballs, in the opposing club colours of Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

Plus we have a new race section that will see the riders racing over the top of four Mercedes vans.

He reached too far and drowned . He was then turned into a flower allowing him to be beautiful forever.

The Bupa Great Yorkshire Run will bring a festival of running to Sheffield city centre next year, with live music from popular Sheffield bands on Sunday 28 September 2014.

This year thousands of runners completed the Sheffield 10k, which starts and finishes on Arundel Gate, before enjoying an afternoon of entertainment in the Peace Gardens staged by Sensoria - the UK’s festival of music, film and digital. The Everly Pregnant Brothers kicked off the live music, which was free to spectate throughout the day.

Now in its eighth year, the 10k will return along with the Bupa Junior & Mini Great Yorkshire Run, which sees budding sport stars from the age of three to fifteen compete in 1.5k and 2.5k courses.

John Mayock, event director at organisers Nova International said: “This year we staged the most successful Bupa Great Yorkshire Run to date, with thousands of runners participating in our three events. We even had a Hollywood star on the start line, with Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis joining us for the 10k.

“The Bupa Great Yorkshire Run has grown into more than just a running event - it’s a festival of sport and music in Sheffield. Working alongside Sensoria has enabled us to provide more bands on the course, motivating thousands of people as they run, and continue to offer entertainment after they cross the finish line – which we look forward to in 2014.”

The event will also see the War of the Roses running battle commence, with Yorkshire and Lancashire going head-to-head in the bid to be the fastest over the 10k. Participants pledge their allegiance to their preferred county and receive a white or red rose to wear on the day. The county that completes the 10k course in the fastest average time wins the War of the Roses trophy.

Financial abuse constitutes up to 50% of all reported cases of abuse perpetrated against older Canadians, and can have significant impacts not only on the financial security of seniors, but also on their emotional wellbeing. It is the most difficult kind of abuse for service providers, police services, and judicial systems to provide an adequate response, as most financial abuse is hidden and many victims are unaware of the abuse.

To discuss this issue and its solutions, The Department of Human Resources and Skills Development in collaboration with the International Federation on Ageing hosted a high-level meeting on the financial abuse of

The vast majority of these deaths were among older people, with 28,500 in the over 65 age group – a 29 per cent rise on the year before.

BEWARE OF BOGUS CHRISTMAS EVENTS CALLERS ON THE MOOR AT There have been recent reports of bogus SHEFFIELD CITY callers impersonating Amey staff The reports have come from the Mosborough CENTRE area where people impersonating Amey staff have called on residents, saying they have resurfaced their drives and asked for money.

This is a scam - Amey do not resurface private drives or do any work on private property and do not request money from residents. Even if the people look official (wearing branded clothing), residents should not hand money over at any time and if asked to, should report this to the Police by calling 101.

The Police are aware of this issue and are keen to let people know about the bogus callers. I would be really grateful if you could let others know about them and not to hand any money over. Although the reports have come from Mosborough, I am keen to let people know across the city, as Amey are working in many different places across Sheffield.

We were treated to a fabulous evening of music this week at the Rotherham Schools Music Service Christmas Concert which took place at the Rotherham Minster on Saturday evening.

The concert was opened by Rev Anesia Cook, Associate Vicar of Rotherham at the Minster with a reading and prayer. Then after a carol it was straight into the performances, first from the Rotherham Youth Orchestra.

Fabulous performances continued from the RYO Cello Ensemble and Rotherham Schools Concert Band.

Guest performances came from the Clifton Community Choir and Bramley Grange Primary School.

The service in aid of the Shiloh, and sponsored by the Rotherham Advertiser, was well attended by proud parents and grand-parents.

We recorded this concert and it will be broadcast for the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital as part of our special Christmas programmes.

We’ll be recording more Christmas events over the next few weeks to add into our special Christmas schedule for those who have to remain in hospital over the festive period. The Christmas programme schedule is still being finalised and will be confirmed through our website and social media nearer to the big day. In the meantime for a sneak preview there are some highlights from the concert and photos on our facebook page.

Plus, a special thank you if you came along to our open day here at our Herries Road Sheffield studios at the weekend. It was fantastic to meet so many people.

Have you any seen a funny club notice? Something that is meant to be informative or to serve as a warning but, because of the way it’s written, it just comes out as something to smile at?

It might be about not standing in a particular area, not allowing in undesirable persons or only women being allowed in the ladies loos. It’s often not the message itself that might seem amusing but the way it is written. Clubs have in the past been criticized for having too many rules and regulations plus the notices that go with them.

Notices have proliferated in all areas of life these days it has to be said- just look at how many things you are meant to do or not do next time you sit on a train or bus for example. Or open a packet of something or other to eat such as a packet of nuts may contain nuts. But club notices have a whole history of their own dating back to the very first clubs that sought respectability and acceptance among the wider public. The intentions were serious, as they are today. Reminding members of how they were meant to behave when at the bar, billiards table and entrance was important at a number of levels. These notices were there not just for the benefit of members but were a very visible sign to any high level visitors or figures of authority that club committees took their responsibilities seriously.

A bona fide club belonging to the CIU wanted to be seen as well-ordered and well-run so notices were part of this symbolic as well as practical side of running a club. There were reminders about paying your subs, not admitting nonmembers, not allowing women or children in certain areas plus many others. It’s interesting how some of the original notices have changed very little over the years, retaining a style of English that we don’t use in ordinary speech. There is an attempt to be formal, informative and authoritative especially when warnings are being issued. And in the past, there were plenty of the latter! Undesirable behavior and people were not welcome in clubs. Most club members knew that but perhaps needed reminding sometimes. Notices became part of and parcel of club life, perhaps a bit like the wallpaper. Probably over the years, they faded and went yellow and fewer people took notice of the notices- unless they seemed amusing.

JEREMEY McKINNON A DAY TO REMEMBER

Picture this if you will…a fleet of legendary ships, sailing off into the foreboding unknown almost three years ago, leaving behind friends and family, unsure as to when they will safely return.

Now substitute a fleet of ships for five tattoo clad, hairy rockers, the ship for a pretty snazzy tour bus and they’re sailing journey for the writing of their new album…this is A Day To Remember.

Having been somewhat off the radar in terms of releasing new material since their 2010 extraordinaire “Homesick,” it could have been either make or break for the Chicago Pop Punk princes. As is with any long session away from producing hit after hit into the music buyers market, the risks are present yes…although the reward? Bloody massive.

Materializing into what we all now are fondly naming “Common Courtesy,” disregard ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ for a record woven with personally emotional, delicate tracks each telling their own individual story from the last three years.

“It seems like we took out time but we were working pretty much 24/7. We rarely had a break from the album…” reveals lead vocalist Jeremey McKinnon.

From building their very own recording studio in this crib to dedicating almost a year of his life to what is arguably one of the best albums of 2013, its evident how much passion and motivation has gone into creating the 13 song release. So was it worth the wait? A Day To Remember sure think it was.

Neil Westfall, guitarist lays it on the line: “We try.

We try to make the best albums we could. Whether or not we succeeded to the rest of the world that’s they’re choice, but we did try. How many people actually go out and chase they’re dreams? Not enough. How can you hate on somebody for doing that, I think that’s what more people should do. And they would if they could.”

“Common Courtesy” typifies all that is A Day to Remember…considered. Ok so maybe not the most rock ‘n’ roll description out there, but put it this way…we wouldn’t have floor filling tracks, soldout live shows and a dedicated band of musicians otherwise. Neil explains: “We had something like 40 different song ideas and that’s why it took so long.

We sit on songs. Each song has only got one chance to really do what it can do so if you write a really cool part and the rest of the song sucks, the song sucks. We try and make every song as good as it can be before we put it out and that’s why we sit on songs until we really feel like they’re done.”

Probably one of our personal favourite anecdote of the entire interview, Jeremey then goes onto discuss…big balls. “If we want to use these songs in the future we do, actually we wrote the music for ‘Lauderdale’ during ‘Homesick’ and it was going to

be on ‘Homesick.’ Chad came up with this chorus idea for this song and it was catchy and he sang the words ‘I’ve got big balls.’ He did it in a really catchy way that I could not think of a way to sing it like that and change the words. And it backed me up so much on that song that we didn’t use it for ‘Homesick,’ then we eventually, throughout that record cycle, wrote a different chorus which is what it is now. And it made the following record. So we do things like this all the time.”

But they’re back…fear not my fellow music lover as ADTR are soon to return to our shale beaches to once again heighten our forever increasing tinnitus problem along with bringing with them their brand new album. Performing in venues across the country to include Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Birmingham and Manchester, the five piece are to be joined by The Story So Far along with Everytime I Die to spice up our February 2014. “Some days are just magical for some reason and that’s what’s really cool, you don’t know when it’s gonna be. You can’t predict that next show that’s going to make you feel like O’h my god! I was actually in a rock band tonight and I did something that was special. Those shows don’t come along that often but they do happen.”

“I always like playing smaller markets, Manchester always goes crazy. London, it’s like a New York show, its like London, Paris, those big cities, it’s almost like some people are too cool to get into it.

Not saying that they don’t get into it because they definitely do. “ We can only imagine how amazing it would be to regard playing shows, travelling the world and meeting a host of new people as a permanent full time job. Waking up each and every morning in a different city, sampling new foods, experiencing a way of living which is so far removed from real life, it almost gives it dream-like qualities. A Day To Remember have experienced this…they’ve boarded the plane to foreign and remote countries, they’ve performed to fans who could never even quantify understanding what is being sung about but are here to feel the music in their bones, to gage the atmosphere at a uniquely live show. Jealous…us…

“It’s changed my outlook on life. It’s crazy though, you meet all these different people from all over the world and you pick up a little bit of who they are and what they really feel. The way they really perceive the world and that makes an impact on you. It’s like when you go to different places it makes you realise that people are similar to who you are, they just happen to be born in a different place. Learning from travelling is the best thing somebody can do for themselves.”

They’ve taught us to be strong, to hold our heads up high and to listen to that little voice in our hearts which tells to do what we really want to do… because without that, we’re merely surviving…and we want to live.

CHRISTMAS PET SURVIVAL GUIDE With the festive season now getting into full swing, our pets can suddenly find their home filled with intriguing decorations, unfamiliar food and noisy houseguests. Although we may enjoy this festive fun, all this extra hustle and bustle can be stressful and possibly even hazardous for our fourlegged friends.

To help minimise any stress, make a quiet, cosy ‘den’ for your pet in advance – a quiet room is ideal for dogs, while cats feel safest when they’re higher so perhaps their early Christmas present could be a safe ‘jungle gym’ from a reputable pet shop with all of the posts and platforms .

Give them healthy treats or praise when they are relaxed in their den so they learn to view it as a pleasurable and calm place to be, and can escape from the comings and goings if things get too busy for them. A pheromone diffuser (calming scents which our pets can smell but we cannot) placed nearby can also help to keep them relaxed.

Christmas trees can make a tempting climbing frame for cats, but sadly vets see injuries at this time of year due to falls and toppled trees. You should supervise your pet in rooms containing trees, and keep doors closed when you’re not around.

Lots of us like to spoil our pets over the festive season with a nicely wrapped present or two, but sometimes it is the wrapping paper that our pets enjoy playing with rather than their new toys!

This week, I have returned to a former club ticket I last used eighteen months ago. The wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I knew the ticket was due for renewal, so after scoring what I considered an appropriate number of points, I took the plunge and asked nicely….. Result!

The club card is a popular North West ticket which offers a bit of everything so I can keep fishing year round. It has a couple of smaller waters with carp to 30lbs, a premier tench water for warmer months and plenty of river action too so I was looking forward to a first visit.

I’d already contacted the tackle shop which I knew sold the tickets, so after travelling twenty miles to get there, eagerly dipped my grubby mitts into my wallet to pull forth the required amount……only to be told the tickets were not available yet!? What? I spoke to you this morning!!!

After several frantic calls to the Chairman, Membership Secretary and various other officials over the course of the next hour, (thankfully, I still had their numbers!) I was allowed to renew on alternative paperwork, so set out to sally forth to one of my favourite little waters……. The following morning, having risen bright and early to drive the thirty odd miles to the compact and bijou venue which was intended to offer up all manner of jewels…it was shut! A small sign on the catch return box informed me it had been closed for maintenance! Other anglers were as displeased

as I with a variety of uncompromising graffiti covering the aforementioned note…. ‘It’s on the forum’ declared the missive; ‘Well I’m not’ was just one irate reply….

Thankfully, there are a number of pools onsite, so I was free to explore another, however my plans already thrown into turmoil, my mood wasn’t as carefree as it should have been, so I did something an angler should never do……dumped my gear in the car park peg!

It was a mistake as expected. The bankside was a glutinous mass of mud after extensive use over the preceding weekend, the wind at my back was freezing, the sunshine so bright I feared snowblindness….all conspiring to make a first, eagerly anticipated trip a bit of a nightmare really! Unsurprisingly, after a few tentative knocks, the carp retired to the out of bounds area to frolic and splash in the autumnal sunshine and generally thumb their fins in my direction!! Chump!

If there are any positives to find from my session, I managed to achieve and awful lot of useable photographs of sponsors products, rigs and scenic shots. I was also rewarded with the company of a friendly robin for some time who sat upon my reel seat and regaled me with a few bars of a song he knew. I spied kingfishers, grey heron, pheasant and vole, woodpecker, cormorant and wren, so all was not lost and by the end of the day, when I realised that it was time for home, I was in a much better mood….. isn’t that what fishing is all about?

Cheltenham has a two day meeting on Friday and Saturday with both days having four races on Channel 4. The Saturday coverage is complemented with two further races from Doncaster.

Friday: Cheltenham: 1.40 CF Roberts Electrical + Mechanical Services Handicap Hurdle, 3yo+, 0-135, 2m 1f: A case can be made for quite a few of these and there is an interesting French entry in the shape of Albert Hall whose form is difficult to assess in a British context (also engaged in Saturday’s 3.00 race). However the one that they all have to beat on my figures is the aptly named Ruler of All who gets the nod over several inform and improving types. The order of preference of the reserves is: Quaddick Lake; Pas Trop Tard; Canadian Diamond; Zafranagar; and Ted Spread.

2.10 Majordomo Hospitality Handicap Chase, Grade 3, 4yo+, 3m 1f 110yds: Theatre Guide’s 4 ½ length third place to Triolo D’Alene in the Hennessy a couple of weeks ago should be a good enough piece of form to put him in the winner’s enclosure here. However after a pretty hard race it is not certain that Colin Tizzard will run him here. If he misses this engagement then the first reserve slot goes to Cappa Bleu who has been running consistently well recently. The next two in line after this one are: Duke of Lucca; and Aimigayle.

2.40 Glefarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase, 5yo+, 3m 7f: I am hoping that the well named Save My Blushes can live up to his name in this unique test. This is such an unusual race and course however and it would be no great surprise if he didn’t win. The others that figure on my radar are (in order of preference): Any Currency; Chicago Grey; and Sire Collonges.

3.15 Citipost Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 3m: Lie Forrit, Monetary Fund, Edgardo Sol, Red Not Blue and Oscar Magic all recorded very respectable ratings against the clock on their last outings. However they may all have to give best to one that recorded an exceptional time last time out. That one is Abruzzi, whose 5 length third to Cyrien Star at Haydock, when trying to give the winner 16lbs, looks pretty good form to me when the time is taken into account. In this contest he has only a feather weight and, if in the same mood as last time, he should take all the beating.

The reserve order is as quoted above.

Saturday: Cheltenham: 1.50 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Registered as The Bristol Novices’ Hurdle), Grade 2, 4yo+, 3m: My lifetime best rating goes to Saint Roque but he was beaten by Killala Quay in a Grade 2 contest at Sandown last week and that tempers enthusiasm for his chances at present. Based on his chasing efforts Cappa Bleu could be interesting if competing in this instead of the 2.10 on Friday but on current hurdles form the clear choice for me is Flicka Williams whose recent performances earn him the vote. Although pulled up in a chase last time the hurdles form of Masters Hill secure him the first reserve slot followed

by Cappa Bleu, Junction Fourteen and Saint Roque.

2.25 Stewart Family Thank You Gold Cup (A Handicap Chase), Grade 3, 4yo+, 2m 5f: The lifetime best performances recorded in my system have been put up by Noble Prince and Tap Nightand both deserve respect in this highly competitive event.

However I have chosen to go on the evidence of the clock from last time out runs when making my selection here. There should be little between Cantlow, Easter Meteor and Grandioso if replicating their good recent Newbury performances here. However there are several others that have also performed with merit against the clock on recent outings. The most notable of these in my view is Fergal O’Brien’s Silver Roque whose 16 length victory over Tahiti Pearl in a quick time at Sedgefield merits his selection for this step up in class. Then, after the Newbury trio (in the order quoted above), my next reserve places are held by: Double Ross; Home Farm; Salut Flo; Kapga de Cerisy; Sew on Target; and John’s Spirit.

3.00 Stanjames.com International Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m1f: The possible value selection is Zarkandar whose last time out performance when second to Annie Power just about earns him the vote over The New One, despite that one’s impressive performance when defeating Rock On Ruby by 10 lengths at Kempton last time out. Needless to say The New One is much respected, but may go off at pretty short odds and Zarkandar is a very decent animal on his day. Next best after this pair in my view is Court Minstrel followed by Jumps Road and Hawkhill. The French pair of Albert Hall and Seabreeze D’Ho bring unknown form to the race (if running).

3.35 Osborne House Relkeel Hurdle, Grade 2, 4yo+, 2m 4f 110yds: If all turn out this should be a really good race. The one that gets the vote is Jonjo O’Neill’s unbeaten More of That who looked a top class performer when quickening up in some style after the last to win at Haydock last time out. If living up to his name there could be more to come and it could take a very good performance indeed to lower his colours. That day he beat Nicky Henderson’s Blue Fashion into second place, who re-opposes here and is respected. However Henderson has also entered Rolling Star, the time of whose last time out win puts him clearly in the picture here. He looks to be the one that will give the selection the hardest race. The full reserve order is: Rolling Star; Blue Fashion; Glen’s Melody; Diakali; and P’tit Zig. Doncaster: 2.05 Betvictor Summit Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 2, 3yo, 2m 110yds: Nicky Henderson’s unbeaten Royal Irish Hussar made harder work of it than I expected to beat Guitar Pete in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last time but still earns the vote here. He should have nothing to fear from Cafe Au Lait if collateral form with Herod the Great works out so Keltus might be the one to make the selection work hardest. After these the next reserves are: Dispour,; Aglaophonos; and Zamoyski.

3.15 Betvictor Handicap Chase, 4yo+, 0-150, 3m: De Boitron was impressive in my view when winning last weekend at Wetherby. He is much respected and will be a dangerous opponent if running here.

However, I also like the chances of Paul Nicholls’ Pacha du Polder who ran a quick time when last seen when sixth to Gentleman Anshan at Stratford in May. Admittedly the form of this race has not exactly worked out to set the world alight but there are glimmers of hope that it could yet do so in the later performances of Woolcombe Folly, Buck Mulligan and Marley Roca (second, third and fifth in that Stratford race). After the selection and De Boitron the next best could be Carrigmorna King, followed by Aimigayle, Attaglance, Baile Anrai and Mart Lane.

He said; “I think we dropped way below the standards that we have set ourselves recently.

Bolton came out on the front foot and we sat off them way too much, especially in the first half.

The game was being played in one half early on. Overall, we looked a little bit leggy and half a yard short.

I’m not going to say that we deserved to get anything out of the game because we didn’t.

Maybe it might have been that we have had five games in fourteen days with the same group of players, maybe it could had been one game too far in a short space of time with a small group.

We are striving to get consistency, not just results but performances as well. We just have to keep positive. I believe we have a good bunch of players here, once we start getting players back and get a full squad we will be able to get more consistency.”

Dickov was asked about players coming back and added; “We are hopeful that Yun will be back with us Thursday, which will give us another option as he doesn’t just play left back.

The massive bonus today was getting Chris Brown back. Chris came to see me yesterday and begged me to put him on the bench, that is the sort of attitude you want.”

County Senior League The League cup took the headlines this week with the competition currently at the third round stage.

League Cup 3rd Round We can only start at Barnsley Sports College this week where Second Division Kingstone United hosted High Green Villa of the Premier Division.

Kingstone won the game 5-1, knocking-out High Green who reached the final of last years’ competition.

James Fletcher scored a hat-trick for Sheffield Bankers to help the Bankers end Wombwell Main’s hopes of defending the cup. Rob Jerrison was also on target for the Bankers in a 4-3 win at Davy Sports Club.

It was a familiar combination for Handsworth, as goals from Jordan Stocks and Luke Broadbent gave them a 2-1 home win over Sheffield FC Reserves at Handsworth Junior Sports Club.

Houghton Main bounced straight back from last weeks’ league defeat to Frecheville Reserves to register a 3-1 away win over Millmoor Juniors.

Simon Asquith starred for Houghton Main, scoring twice for the Barnsley based outfit.

Athersley Recreation Reserves narrowly defeated the Premier Division’s bottom club Swinton Athletic 1-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground.

Division Two leaders North Gawber Colliery carried their good league form into a tie with last years’ Division Two winners Jubilee Sports. North Gawber took the tie 3-2 at Woolley Miners Welfare.

Midweek, Hallam FC Reserves reached the fourth round, with a hard-fought 4-2 home win over AFC Dronfield.

Premier Division

Rovers have been drawn at home to Stevenage in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Stevenage secured their place in the draw last weekend with a convincing 4-0 win over nonleague Stourbridge. Currently 21st in League One, the Boro will nevertheless be looking forward to the visit of the Rovers to the Lamex Stadium, as their success in recent seasons has been built on home form.

With all eyes on the League Cup, Oughtibridge WMFC had the chance to go 12 clear in the Premier Division. That they did, with a single Tom Fletcher goal giving them a 1-0 win over Everest FC at home.

Oughtibridge have now won their last seven league games in succession.

Ecclesfield Red Rose followed up last weeks’ away win over High Green Villa, with another away win.

This time they were 1-0 at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves Division One Last weeks’ leaders Rotherham Town suffered their third home loss of the season, as they were downed 4-3 by Thorncliffe. Thorncliffe have won three of their last four league games and climb into fourth position.

With Rotherham losing, Wickersley had the chance to regain top spot. However, they registered their third straight defeat, losing 4-1 at home to Silkstone United. The win is enough to give Silkstone top spot in a congested table.

Fifth placed Hallam Reserves were beaten 4-0 at Ruby Cook Playing Fields by Joker FC. The win takes Joker up to sixth place, only five points off the leaders.

Sheffield Athletic ended a run of four straight league defeats, with a comfortable 3-0 away win over Thorpe Hesley. The win takes Sheffield up a place to thirdbottom, only three points behind Thorpe Hesley.

Tim Council scored another hat-trick for Penistone Church Reserves, but he was matched by Scott Hartley who scored a hat-trick for Millmoor Juniors Reserves. Sadly, for Penistone Joe Woodger was also on target Millmoor, as they took the points with a 4-3 win at the Memorial Ground.

Division Two Bawtry Town were 6-2 winners over Maltby Main Reserves at the Keepmoat Stadium. Bawtry climb to third with the win, a result which helps avenge their 6-1 loss to Maltby back in early September.

There was a rare goalless draw at the Civil Service

Steve Evans and his players were back at the training ground on Sunday morning as they prepare for the trip to Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. He reflected on Saturday’s result: “Yesterday was always going to be a difficult match and it certainly is harder when you look at the players we had to play without. Yesterday we were without our loan players Dicko, Vuckic and Tavernier. Missing those three lads in isolation was never going to be the problem but when you add on top of that the likes of O’Connor, Milsom, Tubbs and Mills then it was always going to be a problem. Young Worrall sat on the bench but in reality that was to add weight to the numbers as he is not ready for first team action, it would have to have been a real emergency for the lad to play.

We got ourselves in front and Agard had two simple chances to add to our lead but unfortunately he did not take either chance.

Michael Tidser got himself sent off; he did not look the same player he did in our two previous matches that I do know.

We have got to defend much better in relation to the two goals scored, it really was two poor individual errors. Not for one second can you compare the team yesterday to the one that destroyed Gillingham, the personnel tell you it is like comparing apples and oranges.

At no time yesterday will I blame the match referee for the result but when I speak of my players not performing I also felt he had an off day.

Fleetwood will be a difficult match. They have a good manager in Graham Alexander and a fantastic squad. I stated at the start of the season that I thought they would be the League Two Champions.

At this stage I am not 100% sure as to what players we will have fit and available. We will make changes but we will respect and adhere to the competition rules. We also have a sickness bug in the camp as was shown with Matt Tubbs being absent yesterday and a few more players are feeling the effect so my team selection will have to be a late one but as I said changes will be the order of the day.

What I do know is that we will need to be significantly better than yesterday if we want to progress in a competition that we would like to reach the final and bring a trophy back to Rotherham.

O Connor should return to training on Thursday.

Milsom has a back strain. Mills should be back available later in the week and Worrall is ready for a reserve match.”

Liam Boyle bagged a brace to help Bramley Sunnyside to a third consecutive league win. Bramley were 3-2 winners away at Frechevile, in fact all three of those recent wins have come away from home.

U21 Division Treeton Terriers U21 remain leaders of the U21 Division, but they were held to a 3-3 draw at home by third placed North Gawber Colliery U21.

Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 were leading second placed Swallownest Miners Welfare U21 2-0 after 65 minutes. Sadly, this was all that was played, as burst drain forced the game to be abandoned.

Houghton Main u21 made it four straight league wins, with a 3-1 win over Bawtry Town U21 at the Keepmoat Stadium. After a slow start Houghton Main are up to fifth position in the table.

Valley Knights U21 registered back-to-back league wins for the second time this season, with a 4-1 home win over Millmoor Juniors U21.

Goals from Nathan Storey, Dylan Vickery and Adam McCarthy gave Davy FC U21 a 3-0 home win over Swinton Athletic U21. The win is Davy’s second in the league this season, and ends a run of four consecutive losses.

The Rotherham United FC Academy is in urgent need of host families (digs) for its apprentices for the 2014/15 season.

We are looking for families with a spare bedroom, who can provide a stable environment, to assist the transition for young players who are moving away from home for the first time. Suitable families would be interviewed by the club and would receive a CRB check, in line with current regulations. Players would be with the host families from the beginning of July through to the following May, generally from Sunday evening through to Saturday mornings with short breaks at Easter and Christmas/New Year.

Meadowhall League Premier Division Rawson Spring were held to their third consecutive draw in the Premier Division. They drew 1-1 at the Civil Service Ground with Hackenthorpe A. The slip-up allowed Royal Earl the chance to jump over them into top spot. That they did winning 5-3 away against Sharrow United. The Earl go a point clear, but they have played three games more than their rivals.

Arundel worked hard to claim a 2-1 away win over Crookes at Warminster Road. The win takes Arundel up one place into third –bottom.

Steven Brammer scored the only goal to give Handsworth Turf Tavern a 1-0 home win over The Devonshire. The win is Handsworth’s fourth in the last five league games, and takes them to fourth place in the table, only goal differences keeps them below The Devonshire.

Brunsmeer Abbey AJW made it three wins from their last four league games, with a 2-0 win over Wadsley Bridge WMC at Chaucer Sports Centre.

Division One High Noon extended their lead at the top of the First Division to five points, with a comprehensive 4-1 away win over Jack-in-a-Box. High Noon have scored 32 goals in their last four league games, winning them all.

Darren Richardson scored a hat-trick for Concord, to help them to a 4-2 away win over mid-table HSBC. Concord remain in third place, five points off the lead.

Matthew Eaton scored both goals for Hackenthorpe B, in their 2-1 win over Penistone Church at the Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground.

Packhorse Inn heaped more woe on struggling Intake Ball Inn, beating them 4-1 at Thorncliffe Playing Fields. Intake have lost all 10 of their opening league games.

BLADES AVOID BANANA SKIN MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk An exceptionally disciplined display helped the Blades secure a place in the third round of the FA Cup with Budweiser and avoid the potential banana skin at Cambridge United.

In front of the BT Sport cameras, Nigel Clough’s side inflicted Cambridge’s first home defeat of the season - they had previously won all ten of their Conference games at the R Costings Abbey Stadium.

Jose Baxter netted in the first half and substitute Jamie Murphy added the second after the break.

Boss Clough was forced into two changes with McMahon suspended and White not available under terms of his loan from Leeds. Flynn and Lappin returned to the starting line-up, whilst Brandy was back on the bench and joined by U21s captain, Kennedy.

The first surprise of the day saw United begin with a 3-5-2 formation. Maguire, Collins and Hill were the defensive unit with support from Flynn and Lappin in wing-back roles.

Goalmouth action at both ends inside the first five minutes set an encouraging tone. From the home side’s first corner, Berry hammered the ball at Collins but penalty appeals were ignored, whilst for the Blades, Baxter met Coady’s cross but Maxwell saved on his own goal-line.

The Cambridge goalkeeper, though, could do little to stop United’s next attack, which brought the lead on 12 minutes.

Flynn was afforded the space to put in a cross from the right, which looked behind a row of bodies, but BAXTER took up

a neat position and blasted, on the turn, before Maxwell could react.

Cambridge hit straight back and within a minute they will feel they should have levelled. Dunk ran at the Blades defence and found Cunnington in space but Long rushed from his line to cut down the angle, making a fine block with his body.

Long then saved twice from Berry, the first a shot following a long throw and then a header from Tait’s cross, whilst a change was needed midway through the first half when McGinn limped off, replaced by Murphy.

A good burst by Murphy, operating as a left wing-back, resulted in Lappin, now in a central midfield role, having a shot blocked and for the home side, Taylor smashed over after a fortunate bounce won him a shooting chance.

In the final 15 minutes of the first period the amount of opportunities in front of goal dried up but Cambridge can argue that they had the better of the possession and late on Long was the busier of the goalkeepers in terms of organisation and clearing any dangerous situations.

Cambridge started the second half well and their second and third penalty appeals of the game were waved away by referee Langford - Lappin and Maguire cut out crosses from Hughes and Dunk respectively with the home contingent asking for handball.

Unmarked Berry held his head in his hands after heading Dunk’s corner wide whilst the Blades had a good chance to extend the lead on 52 minutes but Porter’s header from Lappin’s cross was too close to Maxwell.

United’s second goal was not far away, though. On 58 minutes, Maguire’s

diagonal ball was helped on by Lappin and MURPHY cut inside from the left before lashing into the bottom corner of Maxwell’s goal from the edge of the box.

The goal stunted Cambridge’s enthusiasm for a while and United’s professionalism, in terms of keeping possession and operating high up the pitch, frustrated the home side, although Hill needed to accept a booking to get himself out of trouble following a tangle with Dunk with 15 minutes remaining.

A Flynn shot was blocked and Baxter fired over the rebound, whilst Cambridge’s fourth handball shout was against Lappin - again the referee was unmoved.

Just into the final ten minutes, a shot from Doyle was saved by Maxwell, whilst the hard-working Porter was replaced by Taylor late on.

As full-time approached Berry fired wide after a slack pass by Baxter but three minutes of added time elapsed without further problem as the Blades deservedly took up a place in the third round draw.

The second round win set up an away tie against Aston Villa in round three and Clough described the success at The R Costings Abbey Stadium as a job well done. Speaking after goals witnessing from Jose Baxter and substitute Jamie Murphy, the Gaffer remarked: “It was comfortable in the end but we had to work very hard to win the game, as we knew we would against a very good Cambridge side. The first goal was crucial and Jose (Baxter) showed a real touch of quality in the box.What disappointed me was the way we allowed Cambridge opportunities for 20 minutes or so afterwards. But after that spell we controlled long periods of the game, rarely looked troubled and produced a disciplined and professional second-half performance. We deserved our spot in the third round and now we can look forward to a fascinating tie at Villa Park.”

A Simon Cox strike early in the second half gave Nottingham Forest a travelling triumph at Hillsborough on Saturday.

A 4,000+ following from the Midlands made the short hop north to see the visitors improve on a run of just one win in seven games and saw exactly that. Openings were few and far between in a tight contest with little between the teams and one moment of quality sealing the points.

The Owls had threatened first, though, when Atdhe Nuhiu thumped a header narrowly over the crossbar in front of the Kop. At the other end, Damian Martinez was relieved to see a Simon Cox piledriver just miss the target as the early exchanges were relatively even.

Forest keeper Karl Darlow then got lucky with a misplaced pass that landed at the feet of Atdhe Nuhiu in the penalty area but the Austrian failed to take advantage.

Nuhiu was a whisker away from getting something on a low Liam Palmer cross on the half-hour mark before Cox broke free down the left channel for the Midlanders only to hit wide from an acute angle.

The contest had an air of a single goal settling matters – and so it proved two minutes into the

second period. A sweeping move down the right saw Greg Halford deliver a deft ball into the heart of the six-yard box, leaving Cox the simple task of applying the finishing touch.

It was a blow for Wednesday given they had matched the play-off hopefuls all over the field to that point.

And it could have been worse as Forest had a penalty appeal waved away five minutes later when Jamie Mackie went down under a Martinez challenge.

But Wednesday has plenty of purpose and Jose Semedo flashed a fizzing shot wide before Stuart Gray made a double substitution in a bid to get back into the game, introducing Reda Johnson and Jeremy Helan.

The move paid dividends in terms

of possession as the Owls camped in the Forest half during the last 20 minutes and Jermaine Johnson also came on from the bench.

Yet for all their endeavours, Wednesday fell short in the final third and a sturdy visiting backline held firm to help the Tricky Trees to victory.

A game of few chances with that touch of quality lacking in the final third – that was the assessment of first team coach Stuart Gray following the narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.

Simon Cox settled the contest two minutes into the second half, taking one of a dearth of opportunities in front of goal at both ends. Gray said: “One goal was the difference and that was the way that game was going. I don’t recall either goalkeeper making any real saves.

I was disappointed with the way in which we conceded because we had plenty of bodies back there but Cox still had the space to score. But I can’t fault the effort of the players today. When they lost the ball they worked their socks off to get it back and it was just that quality in the final third that was missing. We had plenty of possession but couldn’t quite break through and it was one of those days for us. Atdhe had a couple of chances and we applied some pressure at the end but without making the goalkeeper work.

Asked about the managerial situation at Hillsborough, Gray said: “The chairman asked me to take the game again today and probably Watford on Saturday. I am not looking beyond that at the moment, I am just focused on doing the best I can for Sheffield Wednesday.”

Gray also issued an update on injured trio Giles Coke, Lewis Buxton and Michail Antonio, all of whom sat out the Forest clash – and will miss Watford next week at the minimum.

He said: “Giles (hamstring) and Michail (knee ligament) will be out for at least two weeks and Lewis longer, probably around four weeks.”
