Copley’s Column I occasionally put an informative post on social networking site facebook, some with more reaction than others and one I placed this week attracted more interests and shares than anything put on previously. This post concerned the potential riots in Page Hall. There is at present a curfew in place whereby the gangs of under-sixteens have to be off the streets by eight o’clock at night. However, the police seem to be unable to enforce this as they re-appear minutes after being told to go home, causing mayhem by shouting, fighting and kicking rubbish all over. It is high time we severed relations with the rest of Europe who are trying to dictate how we run our own country. My personal heroes of the past, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, who both did so much to restore the great in Great Britain must be turning in their graves. Gary Phillips and Norman Bottom, proprietors of the Forest Showbar, have sold their chip shop, the Meadowhead Fish Bar, in order to concentrate their efforts on the pub. I am pleased to report that new owner, Dom Wragg has maintained the very high standard, and a visit is recommended. Martin Stacey and Linda Emmett are moving to pastures new from the Green Dragon in Dronfield on the 25th of November, and wish this lovely couple all best for the future. This heralds a return for previous landlady, Veronica Tomlinson. Veronica is very popular with a great personality and I wish her much success. On Saturday night, I went to the Devonshire Arms at Dore, to renew my acquaintance with Mark Elvis Nixon who despite being from Sunderland is a regular performer at this lovely pub, run by the glamorous Tina Gage. He packed it and turned in his usual fantastic performance, really sounding and looking the part.

Weekly Wit With... ALBERT SNODGRASS

1.5 million Britons want to be buried with their mobile phones. And if you answer it behind me in the cinema, you will be. I got my wife some lovely perfume for Christmas. It’s called ‘Tester’... I hope she likes it! As I stood swaying from side to side at the British Airways ticket desk last night, the guy looked at me and said, “Can I help?” “Yes,” I slurred, unzipping my superman costume and pulling my wallet out, “One ticket to Amsterdam please.” “You’re unable to fly, sir.” he replied, “You’re far too drunk.” I said, “I know mate, that’s why I’m getting a plane.” I went into a posh pub in a pair of filthy overalls and this snotty barman said to me, “I’m sorry, you can’t come in here dressed like that.” “OK,” I replied as I left, “fix your own sodding heating then.” I asked my mum why there were no photographs of me as a kid. She just gave me a mirror. As a funeral director, I take every chance I get to tie the shoe laces together of the deceased. Because if there was ever a zombie apocalypse, it would be hilarious The internet is an amazing thing, One minute I’m at work looking up random pages passing the time. The next minute I’m at home looking for a new job. I received a letter from my local council, telling me that, on collection day, wheelie bins must be positioned as close as possible to the path but not overlapping, otherwise I could be fined. I wrote back asking if, when emptied, my bins could be positioned nowhere near to where I left them, preferably either slap bang in the middle of my driveway or two doors down. And, give them their due, they followed my instructions to the letter. She texted me: “Your adorable.” I replied: “No. YOU’RE adorable.” Now she likes me. All I did was point out her typo.

and remind yourself that the universe and Goddess Hathor can made you feel better. Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

This week’s article discusses a number of rituals that may interest you, in particular, Candle Divination. Please be careful when using candles near both children and pets. My Fox Terrier keeps putting his paw on the candle to douse it! I often use Lavender and Sandalwood candles but in the weeks leading up to Christmas there are some lovely Cinnamon and Red Berry scents on sale. Candle Divination Candle Divination is a good way to unlock psychic skills and an excellent method to employ when you are searching for answers. Add a mirror to reflect your deepest thoughts and you will soon be queen of your own destiny! To get the guidance you need quickly, simply follow this ritual: • Light a candle, focus on the flame and think of a question you would like answering. • Note any changes in the flame, or in the shapes formed by the melting wax as this could be a clue to finding your answer. If the flame grows taller there will be a positive outcome to your dilemma. A flickering flame usually means that the path to your solution is likely to be straightforward. • End the ritual by gazing at the flame’s reflection in your mirror and note any other thought patterns or visions that appear to you, as these could also be clues to your solution. Always pay close attention to your dreams. Candle Colours Black - absorbs negativity Pale Green - wealth & fertility Dark Blue - success and healing Purple - meditation Orange - creativity & good luck Brown - protection Red - passion

Priestess Power Feeling a little let down? Ask the Goddess Hathor to turn up your charm allowing you to mesmerise everyone you meet. The following ritual will help you to harness the magical power of this exciting goddess. • Add a few drops of Rose Essential Oil to your bath water. This will allow you to make a connection with Goddess Hathor as it is her favourite smell. You also need to add a teaspoon of Almond Oil to the water. • When you come out of the bath rub your chest with some of the potion and take deep breaths. Imagine a rosy glow emanating from your body until you are surrounded by a pink light. • Say ‘By the magic of Goddess Hathor and my personal power I shine my light from this hour.’ Dab the remaining potion on your wrists and behind your knees to instantly maximise your allure. Removing Negativity If you are unsure of another person’s intentions, wear a piece of turquoise jewelry next time the two of you meet. Ensure that the turquoise item is clearly visible. If the stone grows warm it indicates that the person wishes you well but if the stone feels cold it warns you to be on your guard as this person cannot be trusted. An Old Shoe List your problems on a piece of paper. Put on an old shoe and stamp on the paper 3 times. Burn the shoe in the fire grate or on a bonfire and bury the piece of paper, after wrapping it around three whole nutmegs. By the time the paper has dissolved into the earth your problems will have disappeared.

Attracting Good Luck The colours green and pink are money attractors. However, if you keep an orange crystal called Carnelian and a yellow crystal called Citrine together you will never be short of money. A very lucky crystal is the beautiful green Adventurine. Also the pink Rose Quartz will bring you luck in Celestial Brew Hathor, the Goddess, is often depicted as the matters of love. ‘Celestial Cow’ which refers to a constellation of stars. NOROVIRUS (WINTER DISABILITY SHEFFIELD CAN DEMENTIA BE VOMITING VIRUS) INFORMATION PREVENTED? ADVICE SERVICE There is no certain way to prevent all types At this time of year, we normally expect to see an increase in the number of patients suffering from the winter vomiting virus, Norovirus. Symptoms include vomiting (often sudden and “projectile”), and/or diarrhoea, raised temperature, headaches and aching limbs. The illness is very infectious and can readily pass from one person to another. The NHS in Sheffield advises anyone with symptoms including diarrhoea and/ or vomiting to stay at home to avoid spreading the virus to patients, other people and vulnerable groups in our communities. Richard Oliver, NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group Joint Clinical Director said, “Although Norovirus can be very unpleasant, the illness is generally shortlived and most people make a full recovery within a few days. The most important part of management is to maintain fluid intake. This is especially important for small children and those adults with other chronic disease. So keep drinking plenty of fluids. Compounds like dioralyte can be very effective and can be obtained from your local pharmacy. “Washing hands with soap and water are particularly important as a means of reducing spread to others. You can remain infectious for 48hrs after symptoms have settled so children should be kept off school for 48hours after their last symptoms for this reason. “If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 48 hours, you can get additional advice from NHS111 or from your GP.” The NHS also advises people who may have had Norovirus not to visit their GP practice or hospital until after 48-72 hours of being symptom free. If you think you may be affected by Norovirus, stay at home and use the symptom checker on the NHS Choices website, which is also available on webenabled mobile phones. Just go to www.nhs. uk/nhsdirect from any web browser or from your mobile. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has also asked visitors and relatives to play their part by not coming to hospital if they have: • had vomiting and/or diarrhoea within the last 72 hours; • coughs, colds or flu-like symptoms; • had contact with anyone with any of the above. If you have had any of the above symptoms and visit loved ones in hospital there is a significant risk that you will pass this on to vulnerable sick patients in hospital beds. Friends and relatives who are well and are visiting patients are also being asked to wash their hands with soap and water, as hand gel is ineffective against Norovirus, and not to eat or drink on the wards whilst they are visiting.

NHS 111 SERVICE NHS 111 is a new service that’s being introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services in England. You can call 111 when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help, whatever the time.NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones When to use it You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it’s not a life-threatening situation. Call 111 if: • you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency • you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service • you don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call • you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

of dementia. However, a healthy lifestyle can help lower your risk of developing dementia when you are older. It can also prevent cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and heart attacks. To reduce your risk of developing dementia and other serious health conditions it is recommended that you: • eat a healthy diet • maintain a healthy weight • exercise regularly • do not drink too much alcohol • stop smoking (if you smoke) • make sure you keep your blood pressure at a healthy level How a healthy lifestyle could help prevent dementia Leading a healthy lifestyle is key to lowering your risk of developing dementia and other serious health conditions. If you have diabetes, make sure you follow the dietary advice that is recommended by your care team and take any medication that you are prescribed. Diet and dementia To eat healthily, a low-fat, high-fibre diet is recommended, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (5 A DAY) and wholegrains. Limit the amount of salt in your diet to no more than six grams a day. Too much salt will increase your blood pressure, which puts you at risk of developing dementia. One teaspoonful of salt is about six grams. Avoid eating foods that are high in saturated fat as this increases your cholesterol levels, which also puts you at risk of developing dementia. How weight affects dementia risk Being overweight can increase your blood pressure, which increases your risk of getting dementia. The risk is higher if you are obese. The most scientific way to measure your weight is to calculate your body mass index (BMI). This is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. In the UK, people with a BMI of 25-30 are overweight, and those with a BMI above 30 are obese. People with a BMI of 40 or more are morbidly obese. The best way of tackling obesity is to reduce the number of calories you eat and take regular exercise (see below). HOW TO KEEP WARM THIS WINTER As energy bills rise, do you feel nervous about turning up the thermostat at home? Well, take heart, because there are lots of things you can do to get a handle on the heating this winter - so read on and look after yourself. Make yourself warmer • Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. This is because they trap warm air close to the body • Go for clothes made from wool, cotton or fleecy fabrics, if possible • Draw your curtains, as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping and the draughts coming in • Keep any windows and internal doors closed when it’s cold – this will keep heat inside, where you most need it • A lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you’re chilly indoors, try wearing a hat and scarf • Your body keeps warm by burning food you’ve eaten, so make sure you have regular hot meals that contain carbs, such as potatoes, pasta, bread and rice. Try porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. • If you’re sitting down, a shawl or blanket will provide extra warmth. You should also try to keep your feet up, because air is cooler at ground level. • Wear warm clothes in bed. When it’s really cold, wear thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat. Some longer-term things you can do to help ward off the winter chill • Have your heating system serviced and

chimney swept • Check your water stopcock is working properly • Get a keyhole cover – it should only cost a couple of pounds and will help keep the draughts out in cold weather. • Fit thermal linings to your curtains if you can – this will also help to keep the heat in • Check out the benefits and grants available to help with insulation and energy efficiency, such as cavity wall insulation www.insulationgrants.info/Cavity‎ Tel: 0330 818 1500 Winter Fuel Payments Helpline on 0845 915 1515. If you remember fondly those days of platform shoes, possible sprayed in glittery style, flares and wide collar shirts, you will love a big gig which is coming up at Sheffield City Hall. 70s legends Slade are getting together with the Sweet to bring us a night of absolute ‘Blockbusters’ from two of early 70s glam rock’s most fascinating bands. The members of Slade grew up in the midlands and started playing together towards the end of the 60s with an altogether different look somewhat dominated by skinhead haircuts. It was only after they adopted the emerging styles associated with Marc Bolan and T Rex that the hits flooded in. It seems hard to imagine any Christmas celebration without their iconic hit ‘Merry Christmas Everybody!’ They’re back on Wednesday November 27th, still with Dave Hill and Don Powell, alongside fellow chart toppers of the era Sweet, whose roots were actually in 60s soul music. They too found fame with regular appearances of the hit music TV shows of the time, notably Top of the Pops and Supersonic. Following the deaths some time ago of vocalist Brian Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker, different line ups have carried delighting audiences worldwide. If you’d like to pop along and see both bands on the one stage for free, listen all week to the Music Box quiz on the Breakfast Show with Glenn and myself. Name the featured hit we’ve picked from one of the bands each morning this week and you could be off to see the show. Plus as we get ready for Christmas, you can join me switching on the lights at the Priory Shopping Centre, Worksop this Saturday. I’ll be there with some Magic goodies, children’s choirs, Santa (of course) and a star appearance from the Beast from TV show The Chaser, Mark Labbett. It all starts from 12.30 and we’re on stage flicking the switch soon after 4. Hope to see you there, Trevor

WIN TICKETS TO SEE SLADE & SWEET SLADE and SWEET – only one word for it... stupendous! Two of the greatest, most exuberant, live bands of the seventies team up for a major UK Tour this Autumn. Calling in at the Sheffield City Hall next Wednesday, 27th November. This is the second time the two bands have shared a full tour bill – and they’re back by huge popular demand to show just how it should be done. Slade and Sweet are synonomous with great foot-stomping live music. They provided a backdrop to a whole generation and era. Between them they produced hit after hit that gave full vent to the loud and the glamorous, steamrolling their way through the charts in a relentless progression of hit after hit. The clothes, the hairstyles, the glorious feelgood factor of it all saw them sweep all before them. Outrageous flamboyance and pure unadulterated fun - that was Slade. Glitz, blitz and a dangerous edge – that was Sweet. While Slade had six No 1s and a whole host of other smashes - Coz I Luv You, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Gudby T’Jane, Cum On Feel The Noize, Far Far Away, Merry Christmas Everybody, My Oh My to name just some - they never limited themselves. Having first hit the road in 1966 they went on to become one of Europe’s biggest bands with their perfect blend of pop and rock. In the early eighties they were invited to appear at Reading Festival followed by another hugely successful rock appearance at Castle Donington Monsters Of Rock in 1981. The early nineties gave the band another big hit with Radio Wall Of Sound and saw founder members Dave Hill and Don Powell pick up the Slade baton and tour Australia. Since then they’ve never looked back. Their stage performance is sheer rock ‘n’ roll. Sweet are one of pop/rock music’s phenomena. The quintessential glam rock band spent three years in the UK charts alone. They have sold over 55 million records world-wide and have had 34 No 1 hits across the world. Perhaps best known for the barn storming ‘Blockbuster’, other massive singles include Wig Wam Bam, Little Willy, Hellraiser, Ballroom Blitz and Teenage Rampage. Fox On The Run made the Top 3 in the USA and is still one of the biggest singles world-wide hotly followed by the musicians’ favourite, Action. Sweet have had various line-up changes throughout the years, a chequered history of illness and, sadly, demise, but a constant throughout is Andy Scott. Joining the band shortly after their inception in 1970 he has been the tour de force that has seen Sweet weather the bumps in the road to maintain the remarkable high energy and soaring vocals that made them the hottest ticket in town. Tickets for the City Hall date are on sale now from £26. Available from www.sheffieldboxoffice.com or by calling 0114 2 789 789

Vans Warped Tour Alexandra Palace 16-17/11/13

PREVIEW

Words by KT Evans

And so it begins…after years of hoping and praying to the Gods of metal, music fans wishes were once again granted after Vans Warped Tour returned to the UK for its second year in London’s Alexandria Palace. Spread out over two days with more than fifty national aswell as international bands, musicians and performers all gracing the sold out show, circle pits, head banging and copious amounts of Jagermeister was on the cards for the most anticipated winter festival of the entire season. We’ve all been there and experienced the same rotten old feeling…winter has arrived. No longer can we parade around in 50cm of denim or enjoy an evening in our back garden, for the ever increasing fear of pneumonia has once again seized us with its clammy hands. If your summer was anything like ours, you’ll sure be feeling miserable about the fact that we now have to wait until early April for our next slice of festival action – that is, of course, until Vans Warped Tour arrived. Stemming from the US with over 100 bands performing in pretty much every state in America across a three month period, the touring fellowship has upped sticks and settled itself nicely into the UK’s newly established winter festival market…about time! So to day one, Saturday 16th November…we’ve kept it in our diaries for months, been proud of our ticket for weeks and planned this infamous weekend down to a T (nope, just us then!) Spread out over three room, with a bloody massive skate ramp thrown in there for good measure, kicking things off on the Jager stage was no other than pop punk princes Neck Deep. As is with every festival, people tend to leg it to the very first stage when they hear the growling entry of a bassline, meaning that the southern brigade got a far bigger audience than they themselves probably anticipated. Having performed at Sheffield’s Corporation in the summer’s Tramlines Festival, Neck Deep’s performance has come on leaps and bounds throughout the last couple of months, ensuring if fans had yet to buy their latest singe “Crushing Greif,” they were sure as hell going to pick it up after their show. With each separate room differing in both size, atmosphere and audience, the Kevin Says Stage may well have been the smallest of all the platforms, however with a capacity of around 350, the most intimate showcasing’s were to be found in this hidden underground venue. Although not typically a ‘Vans Warped Tour’ performer, Sheffield’s Alvarez Kings took to their challenge like masters of

MCBUSTED ADD SECOND SHEFFIELD DATE Due to phenomenal demand, McBusted have added an additional Motorpoint Arena Sheffield date on Monday 19th May 2014. This is in addition to their Sunday 4th May show. Tickets for both dates are on sale now, in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield. co.uk. Tickets purchased online and through the ticket hotline are priced £43.45 including booking fee. Tickets purchased in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £41.48 including booking fee. Following the astonishing success of their brief reunion at the Royal Albert Hall on the occasion of McFly’s tenth anniversary concert, Tom

alternative rock. Having increased their traditionally flowery tracks with heap loads of heavy riffs along with a much more loose feeling set, the four piece gave us easily one of the top shows on the day. With tracks “You Me Them Us” and “Postcards From Berlin” allowing crowds to shake their tail feathers, Alvarez Kings, this is our thanks for making us such proud Sheffielders. From one Sheffield band to the other, Yorkshire’s While She Sleeps may very well be in contention for the performance of the entire weekend. Seizing the West Stage in the main room on Sunday 17th November, if you’ve ever had the chance to see the five piece live, you’ll share our thoughts with us when we say…incredible. Opening up with the title track off their smasher of a debut album “This Is The Six,” While She Sleeps thrust us all into the deepest darkest pits of hardcore heaven. What is so crystal clear about While She Sleeps is the fact that they never fail to deliver on a colossal scale…whether it be main stage at this year’s Leeds and Reading Festival, in the main room at Sheffield’s Corporation or on the mighty Warped Tour Us, WSS passion and energy for performance is why they are the leading UK metalcore backbone. Other hits “Seven Hills,” “The North Stands For Nothing” and “Our Courage Our Cancer” followed perfectly in suit, a tip of the hat not only to their Northern roots, but also a repertoire of emotionally driven, enormous sounding belters. Once again, proud doesn’t even cover it…we were beaming! Although we may not have heard from them for a year or two, headliners of the main stage Rise Against always hit the jackpot with both sourcing the very best crowd reaction aswell as delivering their trade mark live sound. With a brand new album set for release in 2014, we weren’t given any little sneaky sound-bites from their most recent recording, however their classic hit “Saviour” reminded us all why the Chicago based pop punk legends are at the very top of their game. Aside from the enormous live shows, Vans Warped Tour had heap loads more to offer. A massive merch room including free give aways, sign ups and magazine offers allowed fans to personally meet their favourite bands along with buying a CD, not to mention our ultimate highlight of the weekend… the food court. With burgers, dominos and chicken, although we consumed so many chips we are slightly fearful we are soon to turn into a walking French fry ourselves, variety ensured that Alexandria Palace was the central nucleus of hardcore in the UK for the entire weekend. So…2014, bring it to us!!! Check out www. vanswarpedtouruk.com for pictures, interviews and all the latest announcements from the Vans Camp.

Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd have announced that they will join forces with James Bourne and Matt Willis to form supergroup McBusted for a full UK arena tour. Fans have been clamouring for the guys to take the Busted/McFly reunion to the next level and now they’re going to, under the moniker McBusted, they will perform in arenas to their legions of fans across the UK who can expect a shamelessly nostalgic set full of everyone’s favourite Busted and McFly hits, with a few surprise gems thrown into the mix. The newly formed supergroup came together at London’s prestigious Soho Hotel, to make the announcement, which saw the internet explode with excitement as the hastag #mcbusted became the number 1 worldwide trend on Twitter. Together Busted and McFly have sold 15 million records worldwide and chalked up 14 number ones, 20 top 3 singles and 27 top ten singles. Tickets for McBusted at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield are on sale now, in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

I’ve driven over four hundred miles this week completing various assignments for a number of publications, so I haven’t had much time for fishing, although I did squeeze in a few hours of unsuccessful pike angling (for pike angling, read sitting by the river freezing!) I’m on a roll, and not a good one. My last three sessions, all in search of predators, have all been extremely frustrating; I think I’m fishing well and maintaining my focus with short sessions, however I’m a bit fed up and in danger of misplacing my ‘Mojo’ so I needed some good news.....and I got it! This week has seen the release of a fantastic, in fact I’ll even go as far as to say phenomenal, new bait from Marukyu. I’ve been using Credence Corn since early April and I have had some astonishing results on it. So what is it? I can tell you what it isn’t; it certainly isn’t an artificial bait, but it does offer some of the advantages of imitation products. It is durable, visible, long lasting, packed with attraction, amino acids and much more...I can honestly say I’d rather use it than use the real thing! The single most important factor though is that the baits are completely biodegradeable. Fish welfare is increasingly important with the influx of plastic baits, and Credence Corn provides a supremely safe alternative; unlike existing imitations, there is no danger to the fish if swallowed. It will also break down completely when exposed to light or air, but in water, provides a viable bait for extended periods of time. The Credence Corn is manufactured using specialist (shh!) processes which allow the baits to be packed with essential amino chain acids and other stimuli which are slowly released into the water whilst maintaining the integrity and shape of the kernel. The product is even supplied in a special liquid (which it should be kept in) to ensure it is ready to go and jammed with attractants! It is these compounds which

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

provide the feeding triggers which makes this bait so effective, and the complex structure means it is resilient to the attentions of smaller fish so there is no chance of it being whittled down whilst on the hook. The corn has negative buoyancy, and sinks at a gentle rate making it ideal to use in silt, weed or over debris which may mask other baits. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve used this for some months now and had some hugely entertaining sessions. I’ve used the same single hair rigged bait to catch over a dozen fish before I’ve had to replace it, I’ve used Credence Corn in warm water and cold, river and lake, for all kinds of fish, on the float and on the feeder and it works anywhere! It is simply deadly and I can’t wait to see what the angling public make of it. Credence Corn is available now from selected retailers in singles or triples (corn stack) and various colours to suit most angling situations.

2.40 Coral Hurdle (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle Race), Grade 2, 2m3f 110yds: Another cracking contest is on the cards here. I am afraid that I can’t have Rolling Star as he has yet to record a rating in my system. Magnifique Etoile very much catches the eye (but is also declared and very much fancied by me for the 1.50 at Haydock) but I also think that we have yet to see the best of Melodic Rendezvous who earns my vote here after his win at Wincanton a fortnight ago. The unbeaten Annie Power looks dangerous and Zaidpour, Zarkandar and Bygones of Brid also deserve plenty of respect. The full order of preference is: Melodic Rendezvous; Magnifique Etoile; Annie Power; Zarkandar; Zaidpour; and Bygones of Brid.

Ascot: 2.05 Amlin 1965 Chase, Grade 2, 2m 3f: Although Captain Conan is a class act I am by-passing him here and giving Lancetto the call in the hope that he goes here and not for the 3.15. Among the others Al Ferof is bound to be dangerous, as is William’s Wishes (also entered in the 3.15). Oiseau de Nuit is in the mix as well, along with French Opera. This should be a fascinating little contest if all line up. The full preference order is: Lancetto; William’s Wishes; Oiseau de Nuit; Al Ferof; and French Opera.

2.25 Betfair Cash Out “Fixed Brush” Handicap Hurdle, Grade 3, 4yo+, 3m:

For more information telephone

Shortferry @ Fiskerton in Lincs

Saturday’s Channel 4 coverage is from Ascot and Haydock with the centrepiece being the Grade 1 Betfair Chase where the reigning Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Bobs Worth makes his re-appearance for the season. This should be a first class race with previous Gold Cup winner, and stable-mate, Long Run in opposition along with several other very smart long distance chasers.

Haydock: 1.50 Best Odds with Betfair Sportsbook Handicap Hurdle, 4yo +, 2m 4f: With the Longsdon stable firing in the winners of late the selection here is Magnifique Etoile who recorded a very fast time (183 in my system) when winning recently at Stratford. First reserve slot goes to Double Ross (139) who is a whisker ahead of Ruler of All and More of That (both 132). Next best come: Mischievous Milly (119); Don’t Be Late (112); Bygones of Brid (88); and Vasco D’Icy (69).

3.15 Carey Group Handicap Chase, 4yo+, 2m 1f: None of these can be totally dismissed so a very open race is in the offing. Lancetto has my best lifetime rating and a very commendable last time out figure to boot. He looks to hold a strong chance (if running) but the same can also be said for Alasi, Drumshambo, King Edmund, Kie, Viva Colonia, William’s Wishes and Saved By John who all recorded positive ratings last time out. (Lancetto and William’s Wishes are also entered in the 2.05 here). The remaining two are not out of this either if poor last time out runs are forgiven. Based purely on the pecking order from last time out performances my order of preference is: Alasi (174); Drumshambo (152); Lancetto (140); King Edmund (105); Kie (101); Viva Colonia (99); William’s Wishes (97); and Saved By John (46).

Northumberland is Far from Nowhere and Near to Everywhere!

After running a solid race behind Tidal Bay in the Bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby Trustan Times was quite tempting for my selection here. However, on closer inspection, I found that I also liked the look of the chances of several others, notably: Utopie Des Bordes; On His Own; Lie Forrit; Knock A Hand (also entered in the 3.35 here); Ely Brown; Gullinbursti; and Free To Dream. Based on their lifetime best performances, others to enter calculations strongly were: Alfie Sherrin; Sixty Something; Crowning Jewel; Restless Harry; and Monetary Fund. In what looks like a very open contest the pin has landed on Utopie Des Bordes who recorded the best last timeout figure. The reserves are filled out by: Trustan Times; On His Own; Lie Forrit; Knock A Hand; and Gullinbursti. 3.00 Betfair Chase (Registered as The Lancashire Chase), Grade 1, 5yo+, 3m 1f: Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth is a grand sort and comes from Nicky Henderson’s top stable. If he is vulnerable it is hard to see which of these could beat him. Stable-mate Long Run now appears to be a light of former days, Tidal Bay should not beat him based on last year’s Hennessy form (despite an excellent seasonal re-appearance when winning the Bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby) and the others probably have to find extra on what they have shown to date. Irish entry Roi Du Mee is quite interesting based on his defeat of Sizing Europe in the Grade 1 JN Wine Champion Chase last time out. However, Sizing Europe may not be a good yardstick at 3 miles so that holds the form down in my estimation. While this is might be beyond Prince de Beauchene, Cue Card, Dynaste, Silviniaco Conti and The Giant Bolster are all smart (and must have top races in them) but probably have to step up a little to trouble Bobs Worth. Coming from the Henderson stable, and with wins on his re-appearance in each of the last three seasons, fitness should not be an issue for Bobs Worth. At the current 9/4 best price he represents decent value in my opinion. However, in the never-ending quest for value, I have looked at the recent performances of all the runners. The long shot I like(each way) is Sue Smith’s Cloudy Too, who is a young chaser of potential himself and is very interesting indeed at the current price (33/1 across the board), having run an excellent race in a fast time when winning a Listed chase over 2m 4f at Carlisle last time out. Although he needs to put in a career-best effort to figure at this level he should have no trouble at 3 miles on this track and is worth a small each way wager in my view. My top five in order of preference therefore is: Bobs Worth; Cloudy Too; Tidal Bay; Cue Card; and Roi Du Mee. 3.35 Unbeatable In-Running Value with Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase, 4yo+, 0-145, 3m 1f: Nicky Richards’ Mister Marker recorded an excellent speed figure (225) in my system last time out and just lands the vote by the narrowest of margins from Knock A Hand (223 last time). Others with very acceptable last time out figures were: Kruzhlinin (114); Quincy Des Pictons (99); Mac Aeda (95); Triptico (85); and Mr Moonshine (70) - who constitute the reserves in that order of preference.

PANTHERS THIRD PERIOD STUNS STEELERS An incredible 5-0 third period for the Nottingham Panthers took the points on Sunday at the NIC For two periods both teams knocked on the door in a penalty filled game that saw both sides have an incredible 11 power-plays each. But in a one sided final period Matt Francis completed his hat trick as the Panthers ran away with the Elite league game. Earlier Francis had scored short handed (9.33) to give his side the league before Rob Sirianni equalised at 32.21 The first two periods had it’s fair share of incident as well with Panthers Brent Henley being kicked out of the game on a match penalty for excessive rough play for an incident with Tim Spencer. Then at the end of the middle period Tuukka Makela hit Robert Dowd and received a 5 minute (plus game misconduct) for boarding. Dowd wasn’t to return to the ice for the final period. What followed in the final period was unexpected as the wheels came off the Steelers wagon, 5 Panthers goals, 3 of them on the power-play as Ryan, Salters, Murray and two more from Matt Francis rounded off the scoring. Final score: Panthers 6-1 Steelers

ROVERS ROADSHOW DICKOV GIVES TEAM GAFFER DELIGHTED AWAY TIE FOR MILLERS... ROLLS INTO BAWTRY NEWS UPDATE WITH THREE GOAL The Rovers Roadshow landed at Bawtry Mayflower Junior School on Monday afternoon with Rovers players James Coppinger, David Cotterill and Ross Turnbull. The theme of the event was bullying and respect as part of the school’s anti bullying week presented by the Rovers Foundation team. The three lads visited each class and took questions about how the lads respect each other and work together as a team even though they live different lives away from the club. The overriding message to children is that you should respect everyone whatever their beliefs, nationality or team. James Coppinger “It is important that as role models we give the right messages out to everyone especially at schools. This is why we love to visit schools as we have the last two weeks to make sure we make a positive impact on the local community especially in regards to respect and anti bullying. “We got asked some very good questions that were straight to the point and showed that the pupils understand the concepts their teachers are putting to them which bodes well for the future.”

County Senior League This week the focus turned back to League action, after two weeks where cup competitions have taken the headlines. There was an almost full league programme, with only a couple of rearranged cup games taking place. S&HCFA Rosehill Association Cup 2nd Round Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves of Division Two made it through to Round three of the Rosehill Cup, with an emphatic 6-0 win over Scholes AFC. Worsbrough will face Athersley Recreation Reserves in the next round. League Cup 2nd Round The final League 2nd Round game took place at Stone Close, with Kiveton Park hosting Sheffield FC Reserves. Sheffield booked a Third Round tie away against Handsworth, with a hard-fought 3-1 win. Premier Division Premier Division leaders Oughtibridge WMFC march on at the top, with a 3-1 away win over fourth placed Swallownest Miners Welfare. Oughtibridge remain unbeaten in the league thus far, in paradox Swallownest have lost their last three league games. Goals from Mark Crossfield, Ashley Ellis and Mitch Savage helped Penistone Church to a 3-0 away win at Swinton Athletic. Penistone have won their last five league games and sit in second place, eight off of Oughtibridge’s lead. Handsworth made it six wins from their last seven league games, with a 4-2 win against Ecclesfield Red Rose at the Civil Service Ground. Handsworth remain in third a point off Penistone.

Paul Dickov spoke to the Doncaster Rovers website and looked ahead to a big game on Friday night against Yeovil Town at the Keepmoat. Paul said: “Theo Robinson has not trained this week but hopefully he will be fit for next week. Mark Duffy is the same after suffering bruised ribs against Barnsley. We had thought at the time they could be broken but its just bruising which can be just as painful as a fracture. “Paul Quinn has had to play and then miss a few days of training with his initial groin injury but he’s trained well this week which is a big plus. “We have to make sure we look after players who have had knocks plus train and allow rest for the others. So next week we are refreshed and ready to go again against Yeovil.”

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans was delighted with the performance that saw Rotherham United collect all three points from a 3-0 victory at Stevenage. Michael O’Connor sealed all three points after goals from Ben Pringle and Claude Davis either side of half-time, and Evans was pleased with the result although he maintains there was little difference in terms of performance. “It was a good performance but nothing has changed in terms of league games,” said Evans. “We’ve been playing well even though results haven’t always shown that. Today was a good performance but we have been playing well. We’ve got some good players and now we just need to get into the habit of winning football matches.” Davis’ goal came early in the second period, and the Jamaican international was given plenty of praise by his manager after spending a number of weeks on the sidelines. “I thought the big man was brilliant to be fair. We know what Francois Zoko is all about and he’s been on fire. You need to be physical against him and although Claude took 10 minutes or so to settle in and missed a header and a challenge I thought he was immense. The plan was always to play Claude today which is why he didn’t feature against Hartlepool.”

Division One Goals from Charlie Tunnard and Ryan Robinson gave Thorncliffe a 2-0 home win over league leaders Wickersley. The loss ends a run of six consecutie league wins for Wickersley. Thorncliffe are up to fifth place in the table Rotherham Town took advantage of Wickersley slip to go within a point of the leaders. Rotherham were 5-3 winners over Millmoor Juniors Reserves at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre, helped by a brace from Ben Liddle. Tom Adams scored a hat-trick for third placed Silkstone United, as they beat Sheffield Athletic 5-0 at Warminster Road. Silkstone are unbeaten in four in the league and sit five points off the lead with a game spare. Danny Cutts scored a hat-trick for Davy FC, as they registered their first league win of the season. Davy were 6-2 winners at home Thorpe Hesley. The win was enough to help Davy climb off the bottom and end a sequence of six consecutive league losses. Jubilee Sports drew their fourth league game of the season at the Memorial Ground against Penistone Church Reserves. As usual with Jubilee it was a highscoring affair, ending 3-3.

Joker FC made it back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, as they beat struggling Sheffield Bankers 4-3 at Ruby Cook Playing Fields. In their last game they were also 4-3 winners against Thorncliffe. Lewis Baker and Chad Gaskell were both on the score-sheet for South Kirkby Colliery in their 2-1 win over Hallam Reserves at Millar’s Walk. BLADES LOSE OUT AT HOME MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

Goals early in each half condemned the Blades to defeat at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Co-owners Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah were in attendance but Chris Porter’s first half header was not enough. Danny Kedwell capitalised on a mistake to give Gillingham the lead and Cody McDonald added number two just after the break. Boss Clough made two changes to the United line up for Sky Bet League One encounter with White and Flynn recalled, McGinn and Coady dropping to the bench. The personnel changes saw Lappin move into central midfield and White ahead of Hill on the left. An early long throw-in from Hewitt displayed that Gillingham could be a threat but they were gifted the opening goal on seven minutes. A back-pass from Maguire was short and KEDWELL’s challenge with Long resulted in the ball dribbling over the line in front of the Kop fans. The goal served to spur the Blades and the remainder of the half was largely played heading towards the Gillingham goal. Porter beat goalkeeper Nelson to Lappin’s cross but headed wide and then a shot from Lappin was deflected

wide on 16 minutes. Maguire came within inches of making amends when his header from a Lappin corner was cleared off the line by Hewitt. However, Lappin’s set-piece deliveries were causing problems and United made one pay on 18 minutes when Porter rose highest to power home a corner from close range. Before the restart Gillingham were forced to make their second substitute of the fixture through injury, the second of which was scorer Kedwell, who was struggling from the moment he collided with Long during the goal incident. Miller twice went close to giving the Blades the lead. He curled wide after Flynn had dispossessed Hollands and then the striker was unable to get the required power to trouble Nelson after McMahon’s pass. Gillingham had the final chance of the half, though, in injury-time, when substitute McDonald looked to use his pace to get away from the Blades defence but Collins kept his eye on the ball and timed his tackle perfectly in the penalty area. As in the first half, the visitors were quicker out of the blocks and were rewarded with a second goal just moments after the interval. Nelson’s long free-kick saw Mousinho’s header hit the crossbar and strike Long but McDONALD was ideally position to poke home the rebound, albeit at the second attempt. Further Lappin corners were causing problems for the Gillingham defence

before he was replaced by Baxter, who threaded a pass for McMahon, which almost brought the Blades a second leveller. Miller fired across goal and just wide on 68 minutes, whilst Clough shuffled his players and brought on McGinn for Hill. Porter fired over from 20 yards after linking up with McGinn and then flicked a header from Doyle’s cross just wide. The final roll of the dice for the Blades management was to introduce Taylor for Flynn and revert to three at the back as the final ten minutes approached. Expectedly, the Blades were dominating the closing stages, searching for another equaliser. A McGinn free-kick caused a melee and helped Gillingham, whilst four added minutes buoyed the home fans. Miller was booked for an alleged foul on Nelson, who soaked up time by receiving treatment, and Baxter was also shown a yellow card for a lunge at Weston as time finally ran out Blades: Long, White, Maguire, Hill (McGinn 72), Flynn (Taylor 79), Doyle, Porter, Miller, Collins, Lappin (Baxter 64), McMahon. Unused: Howard, Cuvelier, Coady, King. Gillingham: Nelson, Martin, Legge, Whelpdale, Kedwell (McDonald 18), Gregory (Dack 14), Hollands, Barrett, Fagan (Weston 79), Hewitt, Mousinho Unused: Davies, Akinfenwa, Howard, Hessenthaler.

GAFFER DEMANDS RESPONSE SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough says a hard week’s work on the training pitch is the only way to respond to Saturday’s disappointing defeat to Gillingham. The Gaffer remarked: “Losing at home hurts, especially when you have contributed massively to your own downfall. “At the other end we didn’t succeed in getting enough quality balls into the strikers, especially from wide areas, so that is something else to address. “We now have to work on the mentality of the players first and foremost, because if you can’t score early on it is imperative, more so at home than away, that you don’t concede because it gives the opposition a massive confidence boost.” Looking for positives from the weekend, Clough continued: “We think there is the making of a partnership between Chris (Porter) and Shaun (Miller), although Lyle (Taylor) looked dangerous and proved to be a real handful when he came on. “In Chris we see and honest, hardworking striker who is capable of getting goals, he has got two in two now since coming back from Chesterfield. “Chris is a good hold up player and Shaun (Miller) plays well off his flicks so we are pleased with what we are seeing at the moment. “Jose (Baxter) made a positive contribution from the bench and he is another player who we want to give more game time too in the weeks ahead.”

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 TALKING POINTS, GOALS AND ACTION SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

Michail Antonio has said Wednesday must produce another big performance at Hillsborough with Huddersfield in town this weekend. Traditionally over the past few seasons, games between the Owls and the Terriers have been an entertaining spectacle and Antonio is expecting more of the same this time around. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s a local derby and we always look forward to these

games. Whenever we play Huddersfield, there always seems to be a lot of talking points, goals and action. “There isn’t much between the two sides and it has all the ingredients to be a good game. “I wasn’t here for the 4-4 draw a few seasons ago but from what I’ve seen, these games are always fairly even and close. Both sides got promoted in the same season from League 1 to the Championship – so the battle continues.” With the Christmas calendar bursting at the seams for Wednesday, Antonio is looking to hit form at what he considers to be a crucial period in the season. Having notched his third goal of the season against Reading last time out at Hillsborough, the winger is aiming to add to that tally at the earliest opportunity. He continued: “What we need to do on Saturday is get in front early. If you can score an early goal, it’s so important because it can shape the rest of the game. “The Christmas period is always a big time in the football calendar and it’s vital that we enter this stage positively.”

SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

The Owls’ Under-18s bounced back from last week’s defeat at Ipswich with an impressive 2-1 win on home soil against Bristol City on Saturday. Charlie Dawes continued his rich goalscoring form when he poked in Jack Stobbs’ free kick in the first half but City were immediately back on level terms following an excellent team move. Wednesday’s pressure after the break paid off on the hour when Sean Mullan’s shot was handled in the area and Dawes stepped up to score from the spot and settle the game. Man of the match Stobbs said: “I am absolutely buzzing. We’re looking like a team and it was my best performance of the season.” The Owls’ youngsters are next in action on Saturday 23 November at Derby.
