Copley’s Column When I was young. Bonfire Night used to be on the night of the 5th November only, but these days it lasts over a week. This year, as per usual, it rained, causing the abandonment of many organised fires. Gone are the days of a five shilling box of fireworks containing a few sparklers, penny bangers, two-penny cannons, jumping jacks and Catherine wheels, now one single firework can cost £20. This year, I attended a charity firework display at the Fox and Hounds, Marsh Lane, near Eckington to benefit the charity P.A.C.T. Admission was £4, and in view of the fact that the impressive firework display (which seemed to last for an age!) must have cost a fortune, it was good value for money. My main reason for attending was to renew my acquaintance with a really good singer, Sarah Kidman, and bless her she was singing in a trailer outside. To say it was cold is an understatement, yet she gave a superb performance, being the true professional that she is. It was also nice to see her parents, particularly her father, Paul Lockwood, with whom I have always had a good relationship. The Fox and Hounds are to be congratulated for the management of the night with a professionally manned display, and plenty of stewards in evidence and also a first aider. On Thursday night, It was our annual Mercury Awards, held at Crookes Club, where my table had many well-known faces including Lifetime Achievement winner, the wonderful Bobby Knutt, Jimmy Patton of the legendary Patton Brothers, Phoebe, top Abba tribute girls Diana Edwards and Sarah Fearnley, Mel Day and my mate Dave Perkins, who is splendid in his Michael Buble tribute. A notable absentee was Glen Dale, lead singer of sixties top band The Fortunes, who is not very well at the moment, and I am sure you join me in wishing him well. I had booked my favourite singer/ songwriter, Vincent, on the evening at the Victoria, Dronfield on the same evening, and was sorry to miss him, but I have received some excellent reports and requests to re- book him as soon as possible.

On a tip from Chris Waddle earlier this year, I went to the Devonshire Arms at Dore to see an Elvis impersonator, Mark Elvis Nixon, and he was fantastic. Talking to him after the show, he told me he was doing a summer season on Majorca. As I had two summer holidays booked on the island, I made a point of going to see him again at the Palma Nova Palace Hotel, where again he did not disappoint. I am delighted to reveal that he returns to the Devonshire this Saturday, and needless to say I shall be there along with a few friends who are Elvis fans. There has been plenty of Elvis on television this week with a fantastic programme on ITV last Friday with all this iconic singer’s greatest hits. The two top selling albums this Christmas are sure to be Elvis and the Beatles.

My dog ate a roll of bin liners. He’s been picking up his own mess for the past week. John bought a donkey from a farmer for £100 and the farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. But the next day he drove up and said, ‘Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey’s died.’ John replied, ‘Well then just give me my money back.’ The farmer said, ‘I can’t do that, I’ve already spent it.’ John said, ‘OK then, just bring me the donkey.’ The farmer asked, ‘What are you going to do with him?’ . John said, ‘I’m going to raffle him off.’ The farmer said, ‘You can’t raffle a dead donkey.’ John said ‘Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.’ A month later, the farmer met up with John and asked ‘What happened with that dead donkey?’ John said, ‘I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at £2 apiece and made a profit of £898.’ The farmer said, ‘Didn’t anyone complain?’ John said, ‘Just the guy who won. So I gave him his £2 back.’ Billy Bob and Luther were talking one afternoon when Billy Bob tells Luther, “Ya know, I reckon I’m ‘bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I’m gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go. Three years ago you said to go to Hawaii. I went to Hawaii and Earlene got pregnant. Then two years ago, you told me to go to the Bahamas, and Earlene got pregnant again. Last year you suggested Tahiti and darned if Earlene didn’t get pregnant again.” Luther asks Billy Bob, “So, what you gonna do this year that’s different?” Billy Bob says, “This year I’m taking Earlene with me.” When the store manager returned from lunch, he noticed his clerk’s hand was bandaged, but before he could ask about the bandage, the clerk said he had some very good news for him. “Guess what, sir?” the clerk said. “I finally sold that terrible, ugly suit we’ve had so long!” “Do you mean that repulsive pink-and-blue double-breasted thing?” the manager asked. “That’s the one!” “That’s great!” the manager cried, “I thought we’d never get rid of that monstrosity! That had to be the ugliest suit we’ve ever had! But tell me. Why is your hand bandaged?” “Oh,” the clerk replied, “after I sold the guy that suit, his guide dog bit me.”

SHEFFIELD CHIPPY WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD Marishells Chippy of Ecclesfield in Sheffield has joined the fish frying elite from across the UK, by scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award. It is the first and only shop in Sheffield to hold this award. The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation's fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry. The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence. Owner Marie Slingsby says, "I am very proud to have achieved this award after thirty-three years at this shop. I thank my daughter Shelly (the shop name is actually a combination of her name and my

own) as well as my loyal team and all the customers who have supported me through the years." One customer who has been getting his fish and chips at this shop since childhood comments, "I can honestly say I've never found a better chippy, all the customers know it and with this award you've proved it." To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop's presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product. This award sets the new benchmark for quality within the industry. It will signal to the consumer that they can buy with confidence where the award is displayed, and it will encourage more outlets to raise their standards. Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed assessors. For more information contact: Marishells Chippy, 21-23 St. Mary's Lane, Eccleshill, Sheffield S35 9YE Tel: 0114 2578262 or 07890 928314. DAVID & LINDA’S GAMBIAN MISSION SHEFFIELD THEATRES We are sure that regular readers of the Mercury will have made use of the services of one of our long-standing advertisers, Chapeltown Aerials. However you probably won’t be aware that owners David and Linda Chambers have spent over thirty years making regular visits to Gambia,

living and working amongst the community to help with projects such as building schools, drainage systems, lighting and many of the daily basics we take for granted here in England. The Gambia is the smallest independent nation in Africa, almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, with almost half the

population living below the poverty line. Over thirty years ago David and Linda booked a holiday, simply to help ease Linda’s asthma. Finding it a happy and welcoming environment which helped her health, they began to return more regularly and became involved in local life. Now, over twenty likeminded friends meet up each year in November, living in the local villages and helping with projects. As David says, it only costs £60 per year to educate a child in school, and throughout the year in England the group work to raise funds to help with their projects. If you are interested in helping them, visit their website www. schools4gambia.co.uk to see some of their work in pictures.

MAGIC AM by Trevor Thomas

Well now we’re through with Bonfire Night and Halloween, attentions are turning to Christmas and what to get for the kids? As usual at this time of year, we’re being told what the most popular present ideas are. As we mentioned on the show the other day, it’s good to see some of the old firm favourites still rating very highly. Monopoly, Lego and the Action Man still stand their ground in the latest top 50 for 2013 along with a radio controlled fairy which actually hovers above your hand, which actually sounds quite scary and a little odd!! Anyway, we asked what your all-time favourite toy is and to pick a tenuously linked toy song. Suggestions for choices of toy included the game Buckaroo, Matchbox cars, of which I had thousands, and good old teddy bears. When it came to song titles we had anything by the Toys, Janet Kay’s Silly Games, Cindy Incidentally (as in the doll), Action man-eater, Jack in a Box and anything by the Scalextric Light Orchestra. Lots of brilliant responses via phone, text, email and facebook. As always, your input on the show is fantastic. Join us each morning for a little mission to start the day and join in with the fun. There’s also all the latest traffic and travel with me, the morning news, details on what’s going on, chances to win all sorts of prizes and just great songs from across the decades.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE RADIO NIGHTINGALE by Mel Jaques

This weekend Radio Nightingale provided three services to mark Remembrance Sunday. The programmes started with our now annual outside broadcast of the live service from the Rotherham Minster. My position once again was in the studio taking in the broadcasts from the Minster and Cenotaph whilst Sarah took to the streets to provide them. It was a cold but sunny day for the people of Rotherham to gather once more to show their respect for the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and women who have given their lives in the many conflicts after and including the First World War. The service was as always led by the Vicar of Rotherham, Canon David Bliss. Following the traditional Remembrance Service, the parade re-assembled on the High Street to march to the Clifton Park Cenotaph lead by South Yorkshire Police Band to arrive in plenty of time for the silence at 11.00am. Straight after the Minster and Cenotaph services, we joined the regular programme from the Hospital Chaplaincy team as they conducted their own Remembrance Service at the Rotherham General Hospital. Then later in the day the Service of Remembrance from the Freemasons of Bassetlaw, led by Father Bill Bergin, rounded off the commemorations on Radio Nightingale. Pictures and audio from the Remembrance Services are available on our Facebook page. Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk

evaluating performance, they will demonstrate excellent communication skills and they will also have a good understanding of local, regional and cultural agendas. The posts have been advertised in the media and online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk. Applications will close at the end of November.

A DAY FOR REMEMBRANCE CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK by Ruth Cherrington

Remembrance Sunday has been and gone once again. The Sunday nearest to November 11th at 11am marks the time that the Lewis guns, howitzers, and all the other weapons of death and destruction stopped firing at the end of WW1. Millions of people, proudly wearing their poppies, stop during two minutes silence to reflect on the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the good not only our country but for future generations all over the world. It’s not just about WW1. I know that many club members would have stood still at the appointed hour, as there are very strong connections between clubs and the armed services that persist to this day. After WW1, those who came home were war-weary and had experienced some terrible things. Nevertheless, they wanted to retain the sense of camaraderie they had known in the trenches. They had been united by the horrors they saw and didn’t want to lose that connection as it was hard to speak about their experiences to loved ones. One way of doing this was to establish of Ex-Servicemen’s Clubs, as well as a few ‘Done our Bit’ clubs. In Coventry, some members of the same battalion formed the Howitzers Club. It was a place where they be with former brothers in arms and also have some good times. Royal British Legion clubs were also invited to affiliate to the CIU and hundreds did exactly that. More ExServicemen’s Clubs were set up after WW2 as another generation of service personnel sought to keep those special bonds in peacetime. The WW1 old soldiers are now all gone, and WW2 veterans are dwindling in numbers. Their clubs have declined as well but some remain and still play an important role in their communities. Another link with clubs and the services can be seen in the efforts to raise money for Help the Heroes, a charity dedicated to raising funds for injured members of the armed services. Club members do all kinds of things throughout the year to raise money for this charity. Perhaps we should be keeping count because it probably runs into millions by now. Some clubs choose to fundraise for their own members who have come back from war with life-changing injuries. Whether for individuals or the collective cause, club efforts should be congratulated. Remembrance Day is something that lasts the whole year particularly for those who have lost loved ones in conflicts.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

As the weather cools, many anglers turn their attention to the fiercest freshwater predator the pike, or other toothy species such as zander and perch. In truth, it’s my favourite time of the angling calendar and I can’t wait for the first really sharp frosts to put the pike on the feed! I’ve got a few new ideas for this year, including using groundbait to actively attract pike; I’ve always used a clever device which holds a sponge which can be infused or injected with a flavour or an oil and I’ve always done reasonably well, but a chance conversation got me thinking of other methods....especially those which may give me an advantage over the guy in the next peg. Don’t get me wrong, I know you can catch pike year round and I’ve had some real fun with lures this summer, but for many anglers, October sees the carp rods stashed away and the pike gear get dusted off. Already I’ve seen reports of some simply huge fish being caught and the recently pictured 43lb fish from respected venue Chew Reservoir has really set tongues wagging...especially after the capture of a 42lb fish just days before! It’s not just Chew and the like that can hold unexpected surprises though, many stretches of canal, rivers, boatyards and forgotten backwaters can all throw up big pike, the trick is finding them. It’s the same with perch too in my opinion, although a recent revival seems to have seen perch increase in popularity as an intended quarry after several extremely big stripeys have appeared in the angling press. I love them! Seeing a big perch roll over the net is one of

LOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEK SPONSORED BY CHAMPS

anglings greatest pleasures, indeed more so if you know there are more within the depths! Big perch are often accompanied or even chased to the net by similar fish and I can’t wait to get the bait back in again... Zander are a mystery to many, and feared by some, but are in truth are an enigmatic addition to our waterways. I recently fished the mighty River Trent and was astonished to see one which looked to be around 7-8lb just lazing at my feet in the margins as it sheltered from the flooded river and readied itself for another slashing attack on prey fish seeking solace within the same deep slack. I had noticed a predator striking at bait fish on the surface as I fished for barbel, but assumed it would be pike so was amazed to witness a zander actually hunting! I’m no zander expert, and I have to admit that my personal best is fairly measly, but they are a species I intend to find out more about. The more research I do, the more I realise just how widespread, therefore accessible these impressive fish are, so I intend to up my game and catch a bigger one! Stand by for hours of twitchy bites, aborted takes, missed indications and frustration, but then that’s what fishing is about.....don’t let the cold weather put you off, go and catch something with real bite!

STEELERS SUFFER BELFAST DEFEAT The Steelers suffered defeat to the Belfast Giants on Sunday evening. Two first period power-play goals from the visitors from Jeffrey Szwez and Robby Sandrock had the Giants 2-0 ahead by the 6th minute. With Szwez off for holding it was the Steelers turn to convert on the power-play with Captain Steven Goertzen scoring from Robert Dowd and Chad Langlais. The Giants extended their lead shortly after with former Steeler Colin Shields blast from the point at 14.19 for a 3-1 lead. The Steelers dominated the second session but failed to take advantage on the score sheet. The same was said in the final period with the Steelers outshooting Belfast 10-4. It was however the Giants that were to score first, making it 4-1 through Whitecotton at 44.04 before a Jeff Legue (2-4) power-play goal in the 48th minute set up a nail-biting end to the game. Steelers pulled goalie Frank Doyle in the final minute but failed with their attempts to bring the game back. Final score Steelers 2-4 Belfast Giants.

FIR VALE FOOD BANK GOES CRAZY! Robert Dowd and Mike O’Connor both had back ache this afternoon from carrying another 451 tins of food to St Cuthbert’s Church for the Fir Vale Food Bank. The 451 tins collected at last weekends game against Braehead takes the Steelers contribution to an incredible 1,666 Remember the charity is supported by Robert and Emma Dowd, they set a challenge to Steelers fans to donate 2014 tins by 1st January 2014 - this target looks like being smashed. “The response has been amazing” said Dowdy “the 1,666 tins doesn’t include the 250 sent down by the Fife Flyers fans or there 615 tins donated by supporter Stephen Lawrence and his family “We set a target of 2014 tins and this is going to be smashed maybe 6 weeks early, maybe at Sundays game. We are making a difference to local peoples life’s, we are doing something really good here and everyone who has helped so far donating should be very proud. “Emma and I can’t thank you enough but we are greedy and want more, we want this to continue for as long as people are going hungry. How good would it be if we could do another 450 tins this weekend. Thank you everyone”

Millers & Rovers News 2013-14

DICKOV: CAN’T CLUB STATEMENT GAFFER FAULT PLAYERS REGARDING DELIGHTED EFFORT JOHN RYAN Manager Paul Dickov spoke to the press after the South Yorkshire derby at Oakwell. “For a derby match there was a lot of desire and a lot of hard work from out part to keep a clean sheet and get a result. Results wise recently hasn’t been great as are the horrendous injuries we have picked up in the last week. “We’ve worked a lot defensively this week but we have also worked on keeping the ball, getting the ball wide and forward, quicker than we did today. That was a disappointing thing but I can’t fault the player’s effort. They really dug in they had a real good go for me. If players work hard and give it all they of got, you have a chance of picking up results. “A point today is a start especially when you look at the experience in our back four. Young Luke McCullough I thought was fantastic as was Bongani beside him who stepped up to become a leader.” Dickov gave an update on the injury picked up in the week by Yun; “We’ve got a curse at the minute, he went for a ball in training yesterday with no-one around him and has rolled his ankle and is going to be out for 6 weeks.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke

County Senior League Premier Division Oughtibridge WMFC extended their lead at the top of the Premier Division to 8 points. Oughtibridge have scored three goals in each of their last three league games and are 12 games unbeaten. They were 3-1 on Saturday at home against Ecclesfield Red Rose. Sadly, for Ecclesfield they lost their goalkeeper to a red card in the first half. Oughtibridge’s goals came from Sami Eric, Tom Fletcher and Danny Robinson. Penistone are Oughtibridge’s nearest rivals. Goals from Lewis Dickinson (2), Duncan Richards, John Whitehead and Jack Moore gave them a 5-1 away win over High Green Villa. Penistone are eight points off Oughtibridge’s lead, but do have played two games less than their rivals. Handsworth topped-off an excellent week with a 2-1 away win over Swallownest Miners Welfare. Handsworth earned a place in the Quarter Finals of the S&HCFA Senior Cup midweek with an impressive 4-1 win over Rossington Main of the Northern Counties East League. Their win on Satuday take them into third place in the table, nine points off the pace with three games spare. Jamie Lindsay scored a hat-trick to inspire Millmoor Juniors to a 6-0 away win over Wombwell Main. Grant Allott, Dean Smith and Martin Jones were also on target for Millmoor who climb into fifth position in the table. Division One Tom Adams pushed a seven goal thriller between Davy FC and Silkstone United in Silkstone’s favour. Adams scored three times for Sikstone, as they took all three points with a 4-3 at Davy Sports Club.

WITH CONVINCING CUP VICTORY...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans was delighted by the performance of his side in their 3-0 win over Bradford City at New York Stadium, as they overcame Phil Parkinson’s men to progress in the FA Cup. A Kieran Agard brace compromising of goals either side of Alex Revell’s second-half strike ensured that Rotherham United’s name would go into the hat for the second round of the competition. Despite a comfortable looking scoreline against Yorkshire rivals Bradford, the Millers’ boss insisted his side could have been out of sight before the break, with the opposition failing to really threaten Adam Collin’s goal: “It was a thoroughly professional performance and it could have and perhaps should have been more.” “Its fine margins, our goalkeeper made a great save at 1-0, with probably their only effort on goal. You’re thinking by that time that we’ve missed two one-onones and it could’ve been four or five at half time. “However, it was 1-0 and we praised the boys and identified one or two things where we believed we could hurt them.” Evans also reserved special praise for his team’s attacking display, singling out the contributions of goalscorers Revell and Agard: “Alex is a super player. If he scored a lot of goals he’d be playing at the top of the Championship. I thought he was magnificent today and he absolutely destroyed their back two. He creates and holds up play and brings others into the game. “I think the whole thing went through the front two today and him and Tubbs have developed a good little understanding and they both worked extremely hard and have got good energy, which you can see through the team.” The Millers’ boss went on to praise Agard for his efforts since signing for the club last summer and Parkgate 2 Everest 1 (Tues 5th) Rossington Main 1 Handsworth 4 (Wed 6th) S&HCFA Junior Cup 2nd Round Davy FC U21 1 Ardsley Albion 6 Holmfirth Town Reserves 3 Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley U21 4 Millmoor Juniors U21 5 Houghton Main U21 1 Valley Knights U21 1 Byron House 2010 3 Meadowhall League League Cup 2nd Round Abbey Lane U21 claimed the scalp of Division Two’s Masons Arms Langsett. It was an excellent game at Boundary Club, with Abbey Lane proceeding to Round Three with a 5-3 win, partly thanks to a Miles Howarth (1 pen). Goals from Mark Ashton (3), Dominic Naughton (2), Lee Dexter, Gareth Wilkinson (2) and Lee Rodgers gave Arundel a comprehensive 9-0 away win over Double Top U21 at Halfway Junior School. Darren Richardson scored twice to help Concord to a 4-2 home win over Brampton Dynamos U21 to reach the next round. Tinsley Trophy 2nd Round Tinsley Trophy holders City Taxis were knocked-out of the cup at the hands of Penistone Church. They were beaten 2-0 at HSBC Sports Club by goals from Tim Council and Tom Adams. Despite a hat-trick from Ridgeway Athletic’s Callum Paine, penalties were needed to separate Ridgeway and Bystrany Sheffield in an all Division Two tie. It was 3-3 after 120 minutes Ridgeway won the tie 4-3 on spot kicks. SWD of Division Two knocked-out Division One’s Hackenthorpe B, with a 2-0 win at Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground. Division One high-flyers Jack-in-a-Box saw-off Woodhouse Juniors FC 3-2 at Davy Sports Club.

declared he was pleased to have finally captured the signature of the former Everton youngster: “I can remember going back a year, I said to Paul Raynor when I was going to sign him that he’d been at Yeovil and he wasn’t quite what we were looking for at the time. I had tried to sign him the year before that and just had a gut feel about him and its paid dividends because we wouldn’t have been promoted last year without Kieran’s contribution.”

BLADES THROUGH TO ROUND TWO MATCH REPORT www.sufc.co.uk

A late penalty from Chris Porter his first goal of the season - ensured the Blades progressed to the second round of the FA Cup with Budweiser. At the end of Colchester’s ground which housed 410 Blades fans, the striker netted after 81 minutes after a 2-0 lead had been pegged back. Harry Maguire netted his fifth goal of the season and an own goal extended the lead. However, second half goals from Macauley Bonne and Luke Garbutt gave the home side a lifeline before Porter’s penalty. The Blades team included four changes from the previous week’s league encounter at Shrewsbury. After a careful build-up, Miller was included from the start in the first team for the first time since Boxing Day 2013, whilst there were also recalls for Porter, Coady and McGinn. Flynn, Taylor and King dropped to the bench, whilst White was denied permission to play by his parent club, Leeds. Lappin and Coady were handed the wide midfield roles, it was quickly apparent, but the game’s first half chance fell to Bond, but his effort was deflected over by Collins, who recovered after mis-controlling. Incidentally, Collins had his head bandaged from the start to protect the head injury he sustained at Shrewsbury. Then, for the next 12 minutes it was

all Blades with no less than six efforts recorded in that time. It began with Miller laying off to McMahon, whose shot from an acute angle was bundled around a post by Walker. The home goalkeeper, however, could do little to prevent the visitors taking the lead on 10 minutes. Following a foul on Porter, McGinn curled a free-kick to the back post where MAGUIRE’s header looped over everyone before dropping in at the far post. United’s vocal travelling support had barely stopped celebrating when a second was added just two minutes later. This time Okuonghae gave the ball away, Porter progressed down the right and looked to pick out the well-positioned Miller or Doyle but the low cross was deflected by Eastman and trickled into the goal off the feet of goalkeeper WALKER. Moments later, Miller’s effort was blocked after a run down the left channel by Porter and Hill came close to his first Blades goal on 15 minutes when his 30-yard effort clipped the top of the crossbar. In addition, a 35-yard free-kick from McMahon was on target but saved by Walker. Colchester managed to stem the momentum from the Blades but in terms of hitting back with goals, there was little to report in the first half. A Garbutt free-kick from the edge of the box was over and a speculative effort from Bonne was off target. Collins needed treatment for his head injury late in the half and deep into injury-time, Colchester’s best chance came from a move down the right but Eastmond’s low volley was wide of Long’s right post. With their first effort on target, Colchester reduced the arrears soon after the restart. A deep cross from Garbutt skimmed off a head but BONNE continued his run at the back post and netted with a diving header. The Blades hit back with chances falling to the front two but Miller shot over after cutting in from the right and Porter headed wide a cross from McMahon. On the hour Porter had a better chance to restore the two goal cushion when he lost his marker inside the six-yard area but he was unable to

turn in another McMahon cross. A Coady shot was straight at Walker before the Blades were punished for not converting the plenty of chances which were being created. On 64 minutes, there appeared little danger when a throw was half-cleared but GARBUTT’s 30-yard effort was sweetly struck and nestled in the bottom corner of Long’s goal. Opportunities continued. Porter had a free header from McGinn’s free-kick but Walker pushed the effort away, whilst Long kept out from Morrison at the other end. Clough made a couple of changes and the fast-paced action continued. Bean fired over for Colchester and Maguire, despite being under pressure, won another header from McMahon’s cross. Just as the game entered the final 10 minutes a crucial decision went United’s way and with it came the lead. From Lappin’s free-kick, Maguire’s header was heading back across goal when it struck the hand of Okuonghae - referee Gibbs looked disinterested but was advised by one of his assistants that a penalty was the right decision. After deliberations, a spot-kick was awarded and PORTER waited patiently before sliding home, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Late on Colchester threw defender Eastman forward and United introduced Taylor just before five minutes of added time was announced. Professionally, the Blades played clock down, completing the majority of the injury-time period in the Colchester half to book a place in Sunday’s second round draw. Colchester: Walker, Okuonghae, Eastmond (Vose 79), Morrison, Bond (Dickson 45), Bean, Eastman, Wilson, Gilbey, Garbutt, Bonne (Szmodics 87). Unused: Cousins, Sanderson, Olufemi, Spence. Blades: Long, Maguire, Hill, Doyle, Porter (Taylor 90), Miller (Baxter 75), McGinn (Flynn 68), Collins, Coady, Lappin, McMahon. Unused: Howard, Cuvelier, King, Murphy.

CLOUGH: SUCCESS DERSERVED SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk

Nigel Clough was delighted but relieved to see his side progress to the second round of the FA Cup, following a deserved 3-2 victory at Colchester United. United were two goals to the good at the interval, but having being pegged back to 2-2, Chris Porter, on his return to the starting line-up, netted what proved to be the match winner from the penalty spot. Speaking after the clash at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, Clough beamed: “It was a very hard earned but deserved victory. To get two goals up, it should have been three, in the first-half was a great opening period for us. “We didn’t sit back after the break but probably through a bit of naivety we ended up conceding two goals. “It was always the aim to go on and score more goals and thankfully in the end we got the winner.” The Gaffer continued: “There was a frustration that we hadn’t put he tie to bed by half-time because we have told the lads since day one that you have to be ruthless when you are so much in control of a game. “It wasn’t for a lacking of trying or desire that we didn’t build on our two-goal advantage and despite our frustration perhaps we should give Colchester some credit for their second-half performance. “It was an FA Cup tie and at 2-0 they had nothing to lose. We still had the better chances in the second-half and that is why I was delighted with the end result.” Clough concluded by praising the character of his players, adding: “With 30 minutes left after they had just their second they were probably favourites but we dug in and ground it out and that pleases me.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 13-14 OWLS COME UNDONE AT DERBY SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

The last time the Owls played at Pride Park, they came back from two goals down in dramatic circumstances to salvage a point. But on this occasion, the result was never in doubt once the home side had taken the lead through Jake Buxton moments before the interval. Further goals from Will Hughes and Chris Martin ensured three points for the hosts, who were dominant from the first whistle and good value for victory. The Rams asked more of the questions in the early exchanges although Chris Kirkland was untroubled in the Wednesday goal. The keeper, though, was left powerless and wrong-footed on 16 minutes when a Craig Bryson free kick took a wicked deflection and fizzed narrowly wide. Simon Dawkins then sent a drilled shot goalwards that Roger Johnson blocked as Derby took a foothold on the game. Dawkins had a golden chance moments later but dragged wide after finding space in the box before the contest reverted to type, with the Rams knocking on the door and Wednesday holding firm. It was more of the same as half time approached and for all the paucity of play in their opponents’ half, the Owls were resolute at the back as they largely frustrated the Midlanders. But right on the whistle, the hosts took the lead – a strike that would open the floodgates.

Jamie Ward sent an accurate corner into the mix and Buxton was on hand to send a powerful header into the net from the underside of the crossbar. Almost immediately after the resumption, the Rams made it two. Wednesday lost possession in midfield and so began a swift five-man move that ended with Hughes ghosting in at the far post to slot past Kirkland. That gave the Owls the proverbial mountain to climb but no sooner had they motioned a move to that end, the game was all but over. Derby pressed forward and the ball found its way to the right channel into the path of Hughes, who crossed for the onrushing Martin to prod home from close range. Wednesday made a double substitution, with Jermaine Johnson and Giles Coke introduced to spark some life into what was a lacklustre performance from the visitors. But the damage was done and although the Owls crept back into proceedings in part through the remainder of the game, the outcome was never in doubt. Derby: Grant, Forsyth, Bryson, Keogh, Martin (Sammon 85), Ward (Davies 90), Hughes, Buxton, Dawkins (Bennett 76), Wisdom, Cisse Owls: Kirkland, Buxton, Zayatte, Roger Johnson, Reda Johnson, Antonio, McPhail (Coke 53), Olofinjana (Palmer 73), Helan (Jermaine Johnson 53), Fryatt, Wickham

SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

From the sublime to the ridiculous was Dave Jones’ primary assessment of the Owls’ 3-0 defeat at Derby on Saturday. Wednesday were comprehensively beaten in the Midlands, leaving the manager frustrated after last Saturday’s hugely impressive and equally dominant victory over Reading. He said: “I didn’t see that coming and neither did any of us to be honest. From the highs of last week to that – I can’t believe it because training has been so sharp all week. “We have been electric for six days and then we get that on the seventh. It’s the sublime to the ridiculous.” Of particular consternation was the lacklustre way in which Wednesday started the contest – before continuing in a similar vein. He said: “They had the first five passes and that set the tone for the afternoon. We lost our personal battles and that was an important part of the game. “We gave away free kicks, corners, and eventually they would find their range, which they did. “We’ve let ourselves down and the thousands of supporters who came down to Derby. It’s frustrating, it’s annoying and they have had a volley in there. “But they were told before the game and they were told at half time. “After two steps forward last week, we have taken three back today.”

Owls striker Connor Wickham will donate over £1,700 to charity following an Armistice Day appeal on Twitter. The England Under-21s star, on loan to Wednesday from Sunderland, will give £1,730 to Help for Heroes after pledging to donate 10p for every retweet of his post between 10.00am and 11.00am. Wickham received a huge 17,300 retweets in just 60 minutes and following the two-minute silence he returned to the social network site to confirm the final result. He tweeted: “17.3k retweets is amazing… meaning £1,730 to @ HelpforHeroes. A big thank you to everyone who retweeted, you’re helping your country!”
