TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES MORE ACTS Tramlines, the inner city music festival, has today announced more acts joining its already stellar line up. The UK’s biggest inner city festival, Tramlines, returns to Sheffield for its fifth year on Friday 19 July to Sunday 21 July with a bigger and better music programme than ever before. Today festival organisers have announced that acts including Shangaan Electro, Fenech-Soler, TY, Amplifier Anathema, Bondax, Bromheads, Brolin, Citizen, I Like Trains, John J Presley, Kasra, Luke Abbott, Masters in France, Maybeshewill,

Melanie Pain, Nadine Shah, Stay Positive, Sweet Baboo, The Pineapple Thief, Witch Hunt and Broken Hands will all be playing the three day festival. Fenech Soler join Mercury nominated Lianne La Havas on the Main Stage on Saturday 20 July and Broken Hands will be heading to Sheffield fresh from supporting the Rolling Stones at their Hyde Park gigs in early July. 184 BPM hyper-kinetic digital dance on tour from South Africa. Shangaan Electro’s music is fast, very fast, they headline the Peace Gardens Stage at Tramlines on Sunday

21 July. Many acts are still to be announced for the festival which across the city will feature hundreds of artists in 60 venues across Sheffield including four outdoor stages. There will be the welcome return of the Folk Forest, the Peace Gardens’ World Stage, the Buskers Bus, Street Theatre, the Weston Park party and the Blues and Ale Trail - all with line up announcements to follow. Festival Director Sarah Nulty said: “I think the latest additions to the line up really demonstrate just how broad the musical spectrum is at Tramlines.

There really is something for everyone. We’ve got some great names on the bill from across all musical genres. We’ve got some pretty exciting stuff in the pipeline and plenty left to announce in the coming weeks. We have really enhanced our fringe for 2013 so there is still a load more to announce.” Regular line-up announcements will be made over the coming weeks. Confirmations already include Lianne La Havas, David Rodigan MBE, Toddla T Sound, Maurice Fulton, Theo Parrish, New Young Pony Club, Shangaan Electro, Fenech Soler, Slow

Club, Jim Jones Revue, The Invisible, 2.54, Friends, Duke Dumont and Dutch Uncles.

A limited number of weekend tickets (priced at £15 plus booking fee) are available at http://2013.tramlines.org. uk/tickets/ by signing up to be a Tramliner. Day wristbands will be available on the door at £6 per person, under 5’s go free. Last year’s Tramlines saw over 150,000 people turn Sheffield into one massive festival over three days, creating the feel and atmosphere that rivals any green field festival site.

MORNINGSIDE CATTERY It is very important to make sure you research your possible new pet’s needs before making the decision to offer a home to one. For more information on this visit www.your-right-pet.org.uk or www. puppycontract.org.uk. When you feel you are ready to become a responsible pet owner, use these tips, from leading vet charity PDSA, to help when you are getting a new furry friend. Make sure you get your kitten or puppy from a reputable re-homing centre or respected breeder where you are able to see the offspring with their mother. Avoid buying your new pet from pet shops, internet or newspaper adverts or puppy farms as this can make it very difficult to assess the pet’s health and it’s best to think carefully about anywhere that advertises more than one breed. Avoid anywhere that you have doubts about. If you are new to owning a pet, it’s a good idea to take someone you feel is knowledgeable about kittens and puppies when you visit the place you’re thinking of getting your pet from. Make sure you check that the kitten or puppy has been raised in an hygienic environment and has been exposed to everyday sights and sounds, such as the TV. This will help ensure the pet is used to the hustle and bustle of everyday life does not grow up to be afraid of these things. Make sure your new pet stays with their mother until a suitable age. This will vary according to the type of pet, but a reputable breeder would only allow puppies to leave their mother when they were at least 8 weeks old – some breeders prefer to wait until 12 weeks old. Kittens usually part from their mothers when they’re also about 8 to 12 weeks of age.; Ask to be given a record of the vaccinations, worming and flea treatments your new pet has already received. Book an appointment with your own vet as soon as you can to discuss keeping up-to-date with these important treatments, as well as microchipping, neutering and other future health considerations. Stock up with things you’ll need once you’ve chosen your new companion - a comfortable bed, food and water bowls, appropriate food, litter tray and cat litter for cats, and poo bags for dogs. Coming to a new home can be a stressful experience, so make sure you have a quiet, comfortable area set up away from any hustle and bustle so your new pet can retire to this when they become tired.

Copley’s Column

At long last, we have some nice weather for Bank Holiday weekend. The cold and snowy weather of late has been depressing, and let’s hope this sunny spell is here to stay. I received a DVD through the post this week from my good pal and excellent mandolin player Colin Sawford, who has joined top rock band Riff Raff Union. This depicts a performance by the band in February at the New Barrack Tavern, at Hillsborough. Band members have previously played for Riff Raff, Stormbringer and Shedd’s On Fire, all top pub rock bands. The band comprises Mick Shedd, lead vocalist and bass guitar player, Gordon Henderson on drums, Chris Dee on lead guitar and backing vocals and the versatile Colin Sawford, putting his mandolin down to play guitar. The DVD is so good that I have up to now played it five times, thoroughly enjoying the excellent musical ability of these lads, in particular their rendition of ‘Little Help From My Friends’ where the gravelly voice of Mick Shedd made it very Joe Cockerish. As Joe is a particular favourite of mine, it is little wonder that this is my favourite track. However, other tracks, Honky Tonk Woman, Never Tear us Apart, Running down a Dream, and She sells Sanctuary were also superb. I urge readers of this column to watch out for this band and go and see them, preferably with your dancing shoes on. Thank you Colin for sending me the DVD, it was most enjoyable. On Monday afternoon, we went to Brampton Manor where two bands were playing. The first, The Natterjacks, were a duo playing their own compositions, two young lads who were very entertaining. We had to move indoors to see the following act, a popular local band,

‘Take the Seven’. However, we had by this time been joined by the lovely Diana Edwards from international band Bjorn Again and we opted to enjoy the sunshine and listen to the band from outside. I am pleased to report that they were loud enough to enjoy from a distance, and as on previous occasions when we have seen this band, they were excellent. A large crowd, obviously encouraged by the fabulous weather, had turned out and a pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all. The climax to the football season was certainly dramatic, with all sorts of possibilities on hand. Theoretically, had Wednesday lost and other results had conspired against them, they could have been relegated. However, as events turned out, they could actually have lost and still maintained their Championship status. Wednesday had one of their better days and played Middleborough off the park, whilst Barnsley and Huddersfield were both in danger of being relegated until Crystal Palace scored late on to send Peterborough down. The most important game of the Blades season sadly went against them at Yeovil, where their two nil defeat condemned them to another season in Division one.

FAKE FESTVAL

Last year’s disastrous summer weather might have made some festivals cancel such as Sonisphere, The Bloc Festival and Creamfields having to cancel their Sunday event, and many other festivals cancelling due to poor ticket sales as a result of high prices, but the Fake Festivals tour battled on with no cancellations at all on its 2012 tour. “We were really fortunate last year, despite the weather, to be able to go ahead with all of our festival tour dates,” says Jez Lee, organiser of Fake Festivals. “The weather was dreadful, and we were a little concerned that people wouldn’t turn out for the festivals, but they did, and the majority of our dates were sold out which was incredible!” Promising to be a fantastic day out, Sandall Park Fake Festival returns again this year on Saturday 18th May at Sandall Park. One of the headlining bands, Kings of Lyon, are the UK’s finest tribute to Kings of Leon that can be found. Along with the humble stage presence, Christian Dawson, aka Caleb Followill, also has the voice and musical talent to match. “We love the fact that Fake Festivals stays true to its name, and the event is all about re-creating the look and feel of a major festival, not only with the sound and lighting, but also with the stage and tribute bands,” says Christian. Kings of Lyon have been together as a tribute since 2009, and they very quickly became the most sought after Kings of Leon tribute band. Comprising of professional musicians, they have received exceptional reviews from the likes of Q Magazine, with “Spot on – five stars”, to the Belfast Empire describing them as “Four extremely talented musicians playing the best from ‘Youth and Young Manhood’ to ‘Only By The Night’ as only the Kings themselves could.” Not only do Kings of Lyon look like the real thing, but they are the most astounding, vibrant tribute to the Kings of Leon, playing an inspired and often surprising set list. As well as the impressive Kings of Lyon, festival goers will also see The Fillers and The Really Hot Chili Peppers take to the stage, making the line up truly first class. As well as the headlining tribute bands, there is a also a variety of local artists performing, a secured fenced area with a variety of food stalls, face painting and a bucking bronco, ensuring there is plenty to do. For further information about the festivals and to order tickets, please visit www.fakefestivals.co.uk

I was reading over my daughter’s English essay when I came across the word ‘opaquer’. “What does that mean?” I asked. “More opaque.” She replied. “Oh, I see.” I said. “That makes it clearer.” --------------------------------------------------------I phoned my boss and told him I was sick. “I’ll see you here at 9”, he said and hung up. I sodding hate working for a doctor. --------------------------------------------------------An older woman went to the surgeon to find out how much a face lift would cost her. “A face lift is about £1000” “Oh my, I don’t have quite that much money, are there any cheaper alternatives?” asked the woman. “Well, I do have a new procedure we are trying out. It is a knob that is installed on the back of your head, and whenever you notice wrinkles appearing, you turn it clockwise a bit, and it tightens the skin. As long as you wear your hair down, no one will notice, and it costs £400.” “That sounds great, I will do that.” A month later the woman returns in anger, and exclaims “This knob has ruined my features. It was working great until a few days ago when I woke up with these huge bags underneath my eyes!” The surgeon replied “You seem to have turned that knob far to many times dear.... Those are your breasts”

PSYCHIC EVENING

the post. A hospital visit will bring good news.

Weekly Psychic Article by Psychic Glynis

Tarot Scopes I have been reading the Tarot for 30 years. The first deck I owned was a French deck, given to me by a psychic who found the deck difficult to read. As I looked at the cards, images and words began to form in my mind and that moment marked the start of my Tarot journey. I bought a Rider Waite Tarot deck which soon became a firm favourite of mine. Recently, I have moved on with a Witches Tarot Deck because they contain the seasons and are more informative. Tarot scopes are becoming very popular and are often featured in magazines. I have decided to do one for you, readers of The Mercury. I have pulled a card from the Tarot deck to represent each month of the year.

June - Six of Wands This is an especially good card for dark haired people. It represents a great time to change jobs so get that CV ready. A surprise engagement party and/ or baby news is on the horizon. July - The Empress The card of new projects and babies. People will value your wisdom so give advice. An older man is looking to change his car from red to blue. August - Two of Cups The partnership card - create a loving atmosphere and spoil your partner. A pay rise is on its way. CHARITIES ON TRACK AFTER OWLERTON FUNDRAISERS Two Sheffield charities have been boosted by thousands of pounds following special fundraisers at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium. The events raised almost £3,000 for Harley’s Fight Foundation and Helen’s Trust. Owlerton played host to the launch of Harley’s Fight Foundation – named after six-year-old Harley Creswick, from High Green, who has the life-shortening condition Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Harley’s Fight Foundation supports the Duchenne Research Breakthrough Fund, set up by national charity the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign to unite fundraising efforts and accelerate the development of the treatments. Local businesses sponsored races and families and supporters from across the city enjoyed a race night at the stadium, on Penistone Road, Hillsborough and raised more than £1,700 for the charity which will help fund ground-breaking medical research. Mark Creswick, Harley’s dad, said: “Harley’s condition is very rare and affects just 2,500 children in the UK which is why medical research is so important in helping boys like Harley fight the condition. “It was a great night at Owlerton and we were thrilled to raise such a big total and we’d like to thank our race sponsors and the team at the stadium for a fantastic event.” Helen’s Trust, which supports people with terminal illness, raised £1,000 by holding a race day and raffle at Owlerton Stadium where supporters enjoyed a three-course meal in the venue’s Panorama restaurant. Dave Perry, general manager of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, Yorkshire's premier racetrack, said: “Owlerton is proud to support many local and regional charities and we regularly host events to raise money for worthy causes. “Harley’s Fight Foundation launch and the Helen’s Trust events were both fantastic events. It was great to bring together supporters, family and friends for an evening of entertainment at the stadium and, more importantly, to raise much needed funds for two wonderful charities.”

GOING TO SEE A SOLICITOR Going along to see a solicitor is one of those things people put off doing. We see people every week who say that they have been intending to do it for years. The record I think was a lady who at 96 told us that she had been meaning to make her will since she had got married 70 years previously. I’d call that tempting fate. Most people go and see a lawyer only when they have to - whether it is after an accident; or a divorce; or moving house. It is far harder to pick up the phone if they just want to find out about something that might happen in the future. You might be worried about drawing up a power of attorney if in future you decline mentally; or you are worried about what might happen if you go into a care home; you might have a homemade will but think it is time to get

something properly drawn up. Not all solicitors are the men in grey suits you may imagine. You can come along and meet one of our solicitors for a 30 minute meeting without any commitment to discuss wills and probate; powers of attorney; and if you are thinking of moving house talk to our conveyancing team. We can do home visits if you are housebound. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors deal with wills; probate; matters affecting the elderly; and conveyancing. They are at 10 Kenwood Park Rd Nether Edge Sheffield. Tel 0114 2290160 or visit their website www.rwatchorn.co.uk

FORMER ROYAL SERVICE ARTILLERY WOMEN REGAINS HER FREEDOM AFTER CLARK & PARTNERS DONATION

A great-grandmother who served her country during World War Two in the Royal Artillery was left housebound after an indiscriminate thief stole her mobility scooter. Katherine Tissington, aged 92, could no longer visit the shops or nearby park as she struggles to walk due to deep vein thrombosis. The scooter was taken from the garden of the home in Lowedges, Sheffield, which she shares with blind husband Edgar, also 92. Local media reported Mrs Tissingtons despair: “We’ve just got to stay in and wait. I can’t go out, and that’s it. “It’s not fair. You fight in the war and do all you can and then somebody does this. “I don’t understand who would do this.” Her Daughter in-law reported that: “Katherine was very shocked and upset to find the scooter had gone. She just burst into tears.” “She has crutches just to get around the house. “But now some lowlife has taken it and she is stuck indoors all the time.” Thankfully, this emotive story didn’t end there. Mrs Tissington was given back her ‘freedom’ thanks to Clark & Partners responding immediately to her situation. Within hours of her story being made known, Sheffield mobility firm Clark & Partners donated a brand new, upgraded scooter. A thrilled Katherine exclaimed: “I can’t believe it.” “I don’t know what to say… Through all of this I didn’t know anything like this would happen”. Mrs Tissingtons former tears of despair were turned to tears of joy as Clark & Partners, her family and others responded to her situation. Clark & Partners, which has mobility stores and across Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Derby donated the £750 scooter to the Tissingtons. Mark Shaw, Operational Retail Manager of the Handsworth-based firm, said: “We picked up on the story and I just though, ‘we’ve got to help’. “We know how vital mobility scooters are to people. “Hopefully the new one will be better than the one Mrs Tissington had in the first place and will get her out and about again”. Clark & Partners is a company specialising in supplying products and services to elderly, disabled and infirm people, that range from the very basic to much more complicated mobility solutions. Whether it’s a mobility scooter, wheelchair, stairlift or a simple walking stick, they strive to make a difference to people’s lives through the products and services we provide. Having been operating locally since 1959, Clark & Partners pride themselves as the trusted name for mobility.

SHEFFIELD TRIBUTE ARTISTE LORRIE BROWN WINS NATIONAL AWARD CLUBS HAVE GOT ALL SORTS OF TALENT

Lorrie has been performing her tribute for 18yrs and in that time has performed twice to the Chelsea Pensioners and spent 2 yrs touring with Danny La Rue. Venues she has performed in include, Blackpool Opera House, Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Bournmouth Pavillion and West Ham F.C on the pitch at half time during a game with Everton on Remembrance Sunday 2009. Lorrie has always loved the 1940ʼs music. ʻI think the music from the 1940ʼs had such beautiful words and melodies, the songs all told a story which is why the songs meant so much to the people living through the war because the

words reflected the emotions they were going through in real lifeʼ. Lorrie continues, ʻYou can see the memories etched on the faces of the audience and many come up to me after the show and tell me the story about what they were doing in the war when the song was outʼ. During her shows Lorrie has met Bomber pilots, land girls and once worked with a drummer who was in ENSA (Entertainment National Service Association) and had actually played for Vera Lynn in one of her shows. She will collect her award at the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield at the end of October where she has also been asked to perform. As well as working solo with her

show ʻA Salute to Vera Lynnʼ Lorrie works as part of Groovy Gazza Productions ʻA Salute to the 1940ʼsʼ. A variety show with tributes to the stars of the 40ʼs inc George Formby, Gracie Fields, Andrews Sisters and G.I Frank Sinatra. Lorrie will be appearing in the show on June 22nd in the Peace Gardens, Sheffield on Armed Forces and Veterans Day. All are welcome to come along and join in the event which will see the veterans march around the town hall and performances by a barbershop quartet and the RAF Cadet Band. Lorrieʼs next show is at the Pastures Lodge in Mexborough at the end of the month but is sold out. However she

will also be performing her other tribute to Doris Day at the Carlton Park Hotel in Rotherham on May 29th when she will be appearing

alongside Frank Sinatra tribute Tony Martin. For more details about Lorrieʼs shows go to her website at www.veralynntribute.eu

HATEBREED CORPORATION 02/05/13

If you have any news, reviews or events you would like featuring please email info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk

live REVIEW

Words by KT Evans

Corporation Sheffield…thank you. Thank you, not only for supplying us with some of the best nights out we have ever experienced in drunken memory, but also for delivering a non-stop shop of first rate bands, without fail, each and every week. This time round was the turn of US hardcore punk rockers Hatebreed, with support in the form of Sheffield piece Black Dogs alongside the brute force of Demoraliser. Talk about starting the month as you mean to go on… Every bit as proudly Northern as their fellow counterparts in the likes of While She Sleeps and Bring Me The Horizon, Demoraliser demonstrated not only do they know how to beat the hell out of a thirty minute set, but that they also deserve to be much higher up a show’s pecking order. Sheffield’s Black Dogs split opinion with their supporting performance after evident technical issues suggesting the group were swamped by such a prestigious hometown occasion of this sort…o’h and supporting arguably the most influential hardcore packs to emerge from the pre-millennium scene… Kick-starting the main stage event with ‘In Ashes They Shall Reep’ off their self- titled 2009 studio belter, Hatebreed are every bit as flavoursome as we imagined. Front man Jamie Jasta spits out vocals with eye watering effect along with spinning the audience into a ball of adrenaline riddled fury. Thanking the crowd for buying a ticket to ‘…our band who doesn’t get the most magazine coverage in this country these days…’ Hatebreed demonstrate exactly what hardcore music is missing out on today…passion. What the big four were to heavy metal (God bless Saxon) Hatebreed is one of the supporting fixtures to hardcore. Now with eight albums to their name, the band not only have gone onto smash their way into the scene within pretty much every single country that harbours one, they have also remained as a primary influence to hundreds of bands cropping up post 2000. A sign of the times? Maybe. A sign Hatebreed, unlike so many other tried and tested ‘fusion’ metalcore clans, have remained relevant and relatable within the current market? Definitely. Other belters ‘As Diehard As They Come,’ ‘Dead Man Breathing,’ and ‘Indivisible’ followed, each a snapshot of the last 19 years since the band formed in Connecticut USA. Closing down with ‘Destroy Everything,’ it’s so refreshing to witness a group who’s charisma isn’t lost whilst on one of the biggest tours they have done for a handful of years. But hey, Hatebreed are masters of their craft, and if the saying is true to form…they sure make it look easy.

PLUG INTRODUCE PLUGGIN’ IT PLUG Sheffield’s favourite independent venue recognises the importance of supporting and nurturing the local scene and artists, and as such unveils its latest project, Pluggin’ it... On the 3rd June, Plug launches its brand new venture, providing local bands, DJ’s and VJ’s, a ready made platform to showcase their work. Plug understands the challenges that local creative talent faces in the current climate and wants to help out where it can. Once the Plug team have listened (and danced!) to the track or set, they will ‘pimp’ it out to their vast online community, hammering its extensive social media platforms to assist in helping promote the artists.

SLAMDUNK 25/05/13 LEEDS UNI

The only thing Plug ask is that the artists are from South Yorkshire. Plug are confident that Pluggin’ it will provide a valuable tool to help local talent. Head honcho at Plug, Adele Bailey said, “ With over 9000 followers on Twitter, 30,000 likes on Facebook and a database of over 92,000 ‘Pluggers’, artists will undoubtedly benefit from being plugged by Plug through Pluggin’ it.” Get Pluggin’ it at www.the-plug.com/wantto-play-at-plug

Slam Dunk 2013…it’s back! One of the best single day festivals to spring up upon our summer’s calendar, Slam Dunk is to make its triumphant return to Leeds university on 25th May, with a line-up so big and so spectacular, we could cry. Now with a whopping seven stages and more than fifty bands for your auditable delights, we suggest you book the following day off work…it might be a late one. So to the line-up and with a mind blowing selection of bands and acts to choose from, we’ll get straight to the point. All Time Low. Headlining the event and one of the world’s most adored pop punk brethren, these US hunks graced the UK’s festival stages at Leeds and Reading last year and are well on their way to smash Slam Dunk in May. Deaf Havana and Kids In Glass Houses will join Mallory Knox also on the main stage of this year’s event, a group who more than deserve the right to play on the biggest stages of rock. With power house vocals vs intricate rhythmic sections, keep an eye out for Mallory Knox in 2013…we’ve got a good feeling about our favourite Southerners. Cancer Bats and Yashin are set for the Tiger Stage of Slam Dunk, with anthemic hardcore clan Devil Sold His Soul. This is a must see on the day as it will be lead vocalist Edward’s last ever performance with the band, after declaring he is to leave. No doubt set to bring a tear to each and everyone’s eye, we strongly suggest you check these guys out. Johnny Craig a.k.a Emarosa vocalist, a.k.a. Dance Gavin Dance cleans vocalist is set to perform on the Keep A Breast stage. Although one hell of a notorious character, if you’re one for intricately woven emotional acoustic numbers, this is the set for you. To the Macbeth Stage, largely catered to the pop punk fans within Slam Dunk. This will see man Over Board and The Wonder Years join Four Year Strong plus many many more to make one of the biggest stages of the day easily one of the best. Pierce The Veil, Bury Tomorrow and Memphis May Fire are all set to join Slam Dunk on the Monster stage, so keep your eyes peel across all platforms of the day. Check out www.slamdunkmusic.com for the full line-up, ticket info and releases. Slam Dunk North is held at Leeds university on 25th May.

PREVIEW

round-up by stuart renton

What the hell is going on with all the ex-z-listcelebrities that keep putting themselves through the mangle on prime-time TV show The Voice? None of the mentors would be willing to take on a crappy ex-popstar from a thousand years ago, so why are they even bothering to turn up? I know ex-Here’say member, Danny, really needed the publicity, but to go on to the soul sapping show and suffer the hideous embarrassment of not being put through to the next round, do these people have any self-respect? Oh, what am I saying? Of course they don’t! And speaking of soulless automatons with a complete lack of compassion, The Apprentice starts again this week and it’ll be another thirteen weeks of egos, shouting, and abysmal career decisions, quickly followed by stunty finger pointing along with a job offer for a really very poor candidate who has no idea how to function in the real world (outside of Burger King) and who’ll only quit after a few months to have a baby, start their own rival company, or to sue Lord Sucrose for not giving them the job they really wanted. He probably offered last year’s winner a job, but it definitely wasn’t the kind she was hoping for (and they say the casting couch is dead – how wrong they are). I love the fact that the ‘best of the best’ of the contestants come on the show without knowing a thing about how business actually works. A few of them have flicked through Business for Dummies at a Waterstones once, and that’s about it. Despite their complete ignorance, they’ll still bluster through every task, bullying the others and relying on the ‘my voice is loudest’ approach to communication (why talk when you can shout and why reason when you can patronise). And they’ll be at each other’s throats from day one, griping and backstabbing and bitching… And while we’re on the subject of bitching… new

on TV this week was Vicious, a show starring Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi as two gay men of a certain age, living together in their twilight years. It’s strange seeing these two acting heavyweights in such frivolous (and some might say rather vacuous) roles, but the show, which basically sees the couple taking ‘humorous’ pot shots at each other with witty banter and an acid tongue, doesn’t quite sit right with me. Ultimately, the success of these shows is based on how much you can empathise / sympathise with the main characters, and if you haven’t met any venerable bitchy queens (from a time long forgotten) then you’ll see nothing here to relate to. Vicious is funny enough with some sterling one-liners, but there’s no stand out characters like Hyacinth Bucket (Keeping Up Appearances), Patsy (Absolutely Fabulous), or Mrs Doyle (Father Ted). I have warmed somewhat to the second episode and hopefully, if the writers can develop the characters in interesting ways, the show could have some life to it. It still all feels rather like it should have been a Catherine Tate sketch rather than a full blown show in its own right. Of course, Frances De La Tour is sparkling as the man-hungry Violet, and it’s her presence that really brings the show to life. Because without her, the show would already have one foot in the grave (now that’s how to make a decent sit-com). Last on my hit list this week, if it survives the edit, is the way all these 70’s celebrities passionately and vociferously deny the allegations made against them. They all go before the press to strenuously claim their innocence and how they will fight to clear their name… which basically means they’ll lie through their teeth until proven guilty, at which point they’ll adopt a position of absolute sincerity and soul-wrenching penitence. At no point will they have the decency to fess up to the fact that they and their solicitors spewed a quagmire of lies about their behaviour, and despite feeling all this ‘sorrow’ not one of them has bothered to own up to their crimes and giving the victims even a single speck of resolution. More bitching next week.

angler’s corner

by Clint Walker

Although I’ve been out fishing this week to a pleasant enough venue, I’ve returned home feeling a little deflated.... I’ve done the folks at this particular venue a favour recently and in return I would have expected a little honesty after going to fish it to back up something I’d written in good faith..... After being assured that carp to well over 30lbs had been caught from this particular water, I did a little background investigation as I’d got a few suspicions, but said nothing to the fishery manager as I tackled up and sat down to await the first fish. The weather wasn’t conducive to good fishing, but the sunshine bought almost every single carp in the two acres up to the surface and it didn’t matter how long I peered in to the shimmering water through my polarisers, I could not see a single fish much above 12-14lbs, so I made further enquires on the bank with fellow anglers. It appears that they haven’t seen anything resembling the famed 30lb fish either. Despite spending the whole day fishing for these mythical beasts and failing miserably, I then summoned the courage to ask the manager more about the reputed fish; “....it came off peg 9” It being singular...... “...a lad caught it whilst float fishing, I don’t know his name” in other words he’s never been back.....”....I wasn’t here when he caught it, I think he was on his own, but he did show me a picture” sounds good to me, we have a 30, I’ll tell everyone else. I’m not one to call anyone a liar, but economical with the truth is a bit nearer the mark, but then it got me thinking; does every water have a 30lbs fish in it? I’ll bet 90% of carp waters do, so is it true or just unscrupulous owners trying to make extra cash? If that is really the case, then why do we as anglers either A; believe it, or B; let them get away with it?? Surely if word got out fishery owners would be a bit more honest in their dealings with anglers? I resent paying for a day ticket on the pretext that I may well catch a class one lump when there obviously isn’t such a fish!? Pressed further, the chap admitted that the famed beast had never been caught (or seen) since and “....may have died”...... draw your own conclusions..... I’ll be the first to admit to wanting to believe that when I roll up at a venue, maybe, just maybe, that a fish of a lifetime is slowly ambling around my swim, feeding hard and waiting for me to plonk a poorly presented bait on its nose so it can suck it up and award me with a new personal best within ten minutes. I’d wager a guess that maybe you are too, but it’s made a whole lot harder by fishery owners peddling blatant mistruths..... The truth IS out there....but maybe not at a fishery near you!

racing form

Radio Gaga; Gregorian; Guest of Honour (declared elsewhere also); Set the Trend; and Royal Blue Star. I must also give a mention to the ultra-consistent Pintura who is something of a favourite of mine.

There’s quite a lot of Channel 4 coverage this week so with a number of races to go at the comments are more limited than usual. The racing looks very tight this week with no particular “stand out” horses.

Lingfield: 2.20 Betfred “The Bonus King” Oaks Trial Stakes, Listed, 3yo fillies, 1m 3f 106yds: Tom Dascombe may be able to land this with his Northern Star who may have most to fear from Miss You Too, Heroine Required and Secret Gesture.

by Timelord

Midweek racing (selections only): Wednesday: Wednesday Chester: Chester 1.45 Quatuor 2.15 The Lark 2.45 Tominator 3.15 Gatepost Thursday: Chester: 1.45 Mijhaar 2.15 Gabrial 2.45 Mister Impatience 3.15 Flashlight Goodwood: 2.30 Starwatch Friday: Chester: 1.45 Haaf A Sixpence 2.15 Havana Gold 2.45 Testosterone 3.15 Dutch Masterpiece Saturday: Ascot: 2.05 Leo Bancroft Signature Haircare Handicap, 4yo+, 0-95, 1m 4f: There isn’t an awful lot between all these. My shortlist comprises (in order of preference): Noble Alan; Angel Gabriel; Proofreader; Tahaamah; Haravard’ N’ Yale; and Perennial. Noble Alan is the selection. 2.40 Buckhounds Stakes, Listed, 4yo+, 1m 4f: The shortlist for this one (again in order of preference) is: Viking Storm; Main Sequence; Gallipot; Mobaco; Media Hype; and Number Theory. The vote goes to Viking Storm. 3.15 Bovis Homes Fillies’ Handicap, 3yo+, 1m: This is another race where a large horse blanket is likely to cover the field at the finish. The order of preference is: Westwiththewind; Princess of Orange; Arsaadi; Modern Romance; Gifted Girl; Bassara; and Tipping Over. 3.50 Betfred Victoria Cup, (Handicap), 4yo+, 7f: This is a complete nightmare to call with all having a shout. Much will depend upon the ground conditions, the effect of the draw and luck in running so a hefty wealth warning is in order – bet at your peril. For those that must get involved my order of preference is: Sound Hearts; Loving Spirit; Bertiewhittle; Redvers; Rebellious Guest; Guest of Honour; Prince of Johanne; Dream Tune; Born to Surprise.

Saturday Selection Summary (for reserves see above): Ascot: 2.05 Noble Alan 2.40 Viking Storm 3.15 Westwiththewind 3.50 Sound Hearts Haydock: 1.50 Pateese 3.30 Street Entertainer 4.05 Eton Forever Lingfield: 2.20 Northern Star Last week’s results: It was a case of “nearly but not quite” last week when a couple of the selections got touched off to deprive us of a profit. Just the Judge looked to be going well a furlong or so out in the 1000 Guineas only to be collared close home by Sky Lantern. Perhaps lack of a prep run this term caught her out. After withdrawal of non runners the final selections and results were: Newmarket: 2.05 Ocean Tempest – 7th @ 16/1 2.35 Free Zone – 10th @ 28/1 3.10 Noble Mission – 4th @ 7/4 3.50 Dawn Approach – won @ 11/8 Goodwood: 2.20 Khione – won @ 4/1 2.55 Silverheels – 7th @ 10/1 Sunday (selections only - in order of preference): Newmarket: 2.05 Stencive – 6th @ 5/2 2.35 Shirocco Star – 4th @ 5/2 3.10 Gabriel’s Lad – 2nd @ 5/1 3.50 Just The Judge – 2nd @ 7/1 Salisbury; 2.20 The Betchworth Kid – 11th @ 20/1 The financial outcome was a loss of 3.625 points to one point level stakes.

GOLF TOURS

Haydock: 1.50 Pertemps Network Long Distance Handicap Hurdle, 4yo+, 3m: This is another nightmare of a race for a tipster to call. There are at least a dozen that are running well at the present time and a few that have run up a sequence of wins to boot. With minimum confidence therefore the order of preference is: Pateese; Howizee; Arctic Court; Art Professor; Decoy; Problema Tic; Tullyraine; Va’ Vite; and Humbie. 3.30 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Registered as the Swinton Hurdle), Grade 3, 4yo+, 2m: If the above five races haven’t been competitive enough here is another one where any of the runners could take a hand in the finish. Australia Day ran well in a chase on his latest start and seems to be in good order at present. He is entered elsewhere however so I have defaulted to hurdles form for the top two in my shortlist. Both of David Pipe’s pair, Street Entertainer and War Singer, ran well when behind Raya Star at Ascot in November and that form could be good enough to see them prevail here although there are many other leading contenders. My order of preference is: Street Entertainer; War Singer; Australia Day; Cape Express; Cry of Freedom; Specialagent Alfie; Court Minstrel; and Local Hero. 4.05 Pertemps Network Spring Trophy Stakes, Listed, 3yo+, 7f: Roger Varian’s Eton Forever earns the vote through his Listed success at Redcar last October. Admittedly that was on soft ground however so if it turns up on the firm side here he may not like it as much. The reserves in order of preference (all of whom also have good soft ground form) are: Red Jazz;

DEFENDER TOWN OF AGREES DEAL... CHAMPIONS! Rotherham United have agreed a deal to sign defender Joe Skarz on a permanent basis when his contract with Bury FC expires. The Huddersfield-born defender who initially joined the Millers on an emergency loan deal at the end of March has signed a two-year deal with the club and will kick-off the season in League One next season, where he had previously played almost 40 games already in this campaign. “I think he’s been absolutely sensational since he’s joined us,” Steve Evans told Millers Player. “He’s salt of the earth, and he wants to come and work. He wants to improve, and for me he will play in the Championship one day, and he’s only 23 now, so we hope that it will be with Rotherham United.” Skarz will become Steve Evans’ first signing of the summer when his new contract comes into effect later in the Summer.

FERHAM FESTIVAL RETURNS On the 12th of May 2013, the RUCST will take over Ferham Park for a festival of sporting fun. You will get the chance to have a go at a range of activities from Dance, Arts and Crafts, Family Activities, Henna, Nail Art and Inflatable Games. The festival will also play hosts to two different football tournaments for juniors (9-13) and seniors (13-18). The first time the Trust’s ‘The Great Milers Youth Form’ has part organised this year’s event with all of these activities being the invention of these great young minds. The Trust is excited to see the return of the Ferham Festival since last time out over 500 people attended the event. The event, which will run from 12-5pm, is free to enter and food and refreshments will be made available. Cohesion Officer Mark Cummins said: “I am excited to see the return of the Ferham Festival after the disappointment of not being able to do this last year. With everything that we’ve got going on this year, the events will eclipse all the festivals that have been on before. “I’d like to say a big thank you to the British Council for supporting us in this year’s games. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to put this on. “I’d also like to say a huge thank you to the The Great Millers Youth Forum for all their great work in organising this event. I’m sure by the end of the festival I won’t be the only one proud of them. “Finally, I’d like to say that anyone is welcome down and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s faces on the day.” For more information contact Mark Cummins on: Phone: 01709 827767 Mobile: 07852 494945 Email: cohesion@rotherhamunited.net

With Doncaster Rovers having been crowned as Champions of npower League One, Jamie McDonnell is looking to make it a clean sweep for Doncaster as he battles for the IBF Bantamweight World Title at the keepmoat stadium on Saturday 11th May. Rovers’ dramatic late winner against Brentford ensured Brian Flynn’s men would lift the npower League One trophy securing a return to the second tier of English football at the first time of asking. To celebrate this fantastic achievement Doncaster Rovers alongside Dennis Hobson Boxing are offering season ticket holders a discount of 20% on tickets, to what has been billed the biggest sporting event to be held in Doncaster. WEEEKEND ROUND-UP LOCAL FOOTBALL by Michael Clarke

County Senior League Only two fixtures remain in the County Senior League after a very busy last month or so. Premier Division The big fixture this week took place on Wednesday night when fourth placed Penistone Church hosted the newly crowned champions Shaw Lane Aqua Force Barnsley at the Memorial Ground. Danny Barlow scored was the difference on the night scoring twice. Shaw Lane followed up that win, with another 2-0 on Saturday against Swallownest Miners Welfare. Shaw Lane end the season deserved champions, with nine points between them and second placed Millmoor Juniors. Runner’s up Millmoor Juniors were in action on Saturday. They were comfortable 5-2 winners over Frecheville. Lloyd Gelsthorpe, Chris Esberger (2), Rob Hayes and Glynn Nicholson were the scorers for Millmoor. Penistone Church followed their midweek loss to Shaw Lane, with 2-2 draw away to High Green Villa. They sit in fourth place, on the same points as Handsworth with a game remaining. Stocksbridge Park Reserves enjoyed both sides of the coin midweek. First, they were defeated 1-0 at home by in-form Ecclesfield Red Rose. Stocksbridge were able to their recent woe, with their first win for eight matches on Wednesday night. They were 3-2 victors away from home, with Luke Townsend on target twice for them. Andy Jones scored twice to inspire Swallownest Miners Welfare to a 3-2 home win over Everest midweek. Richard Williams was also on the scoresheet. Swallownest end the season in sixth place. Houghton Main were held away from home for the third successive time on Monday night, when

they drew 1-1 against Wombwell Main. Wombwell Main have had a very busy time, with a big fixture backlog due to their cup commitments. They were also in action on both Wednesday and Saturday. On Wednesday they were 3-0 winners at home against South Kirkby Colliery. Damon Cassell scored twice in that game, with a Simon Chadburn also on target, on a score-sheet that was very much similar to that of the League Cup Final from a fortnight ago. Wombwell were then defeated 4-2 on Saturday by lowly Davy FC. The win for Davy ends a run of twelve successive losses, and lifts them above South Kirkby Colliery and off the bottom of the table. Wombwell still have two games to play. Division One There was only one fixture outside the Premier Division this week, with Thorpe Hesley taking on Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Reserves at Park Road. The game was entertaining and ended 2-2. The draw takes Thorpe Hesley above Hallam Reserves, and end the season in fifth position. Meadowhall League Premier Division Handsworth Turf Tavern were 1-0 winners over Crookes in the big game at Warminster Road on Thursday night. The win was enough to take Crookes top on goal difference. Sadly for Handsworth they were unable to extend their lead on Sunday, as they were downed 3-1 by Wadsley Bridge WMC at Chaucer Sports Centre. The win for Wadsley builds on their midweek 4-3 win over Hackenthorpe A. Wadsley remain third, six points off the lead. A Lee Dexter penalty and a Joe Charlesworth strike was enough to give Arundel a 2-1 win over Hackehthorpe A at Swallownest Miners Welfare Ground. The win takes Arundel above High Noon and into third from the last place. Elsewhere, High Noon held Brunsmeer Abbey AJW to a 2-2 draw at HSBC Sports Club. Division One Arbourthorne EA have used the a run of three fixtures in six days to assert their dominance in Division One. Firstly, they were 1-0 winners over

Woodhouse JFC on Tuesday night. They followed that up with a 2-0 win over Jack-in-a-Box 48 hours later. The then rounded-off an excellent week with a 12-1 away win over struggling Ridgeway Athletic on Sunday. Liam Cartledge and Steven Brammer both scored four goals each in that match, as Arbourthorne move four points clear at the top of the table with a spare game. Second placed Rawson Spring were also in action on Thursday. They were 2-0 winners over Woodhouse JFC at the Civil Service Ground, thanks to goals from Bradley Torr and James Middleton. Rwason’s win comes on the back off a 2-2 draw away to Hackenthorpe B on Tuesday night. Division Two City Taxis (Stradbroke) sealed the Division Two Championship on Thursday night, with a 3-1 away win over mid-table SWD. Philip Miskell was on target twice (once from the spot) for the champions. Alex Lill was in excellent form for Mosborough B on Sunday, scoring three times in their 5-1 home win over Norton Athletic. The win takes Mosborough into third place above Bystrany Sheffield. U21 Division The U21 Division title race will go down to the wire, with both the front-runners winning this weekend. The league leaders Sheffield FC U21’s ended their season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Woodhouse JFC U21’s at Flockton Park. They end their season on 51 points. Third placed Dronfield Town U21’s grabbed their 11th consecutive league win, with a 3-2 home win over Greasborough U21’s at Gosforth Fields. 18 year old John Pugh starred for Dronfield with a hat-trick. The win takes Dronfield above Throstles U21’s and into second place. They are just two points off the lead with two games left to play. Elsewhere, Aiden Cooper and Thomas Ball both scored twice for Swinton Spartans U21’s, as they beat Crosspool Juniors U21’s 7-1 at Swinton Comprehensive School. Swinton’s win ends a run of seven successive league defeats for them.

SHEFFIELD UNITED NEWS 2 12-13 BLADES SUFFER PLAY-OFF MISERY AT YEOVIL SUFC NEWS www.sufc.co.uk United’s play-off hoodoo continues as Yeovil clawed a one-goal first leg deficit to win in Somerset on Bank Holiday Monday. Kevin Dawson cancelled out Callum McFadzean’s first leg goal and Ed Upson scored what proved to be the winner late on at Huish Park. Jamie Murphy hit the crossbar for the Blades but the season came to an untimely end as Yeovil booked their Wembley place. Teenagers McFadzean and Ironside were handed starts in the second leg. Goalscorer in the first leg, McFadzean, took the place of the injured Robson, whilst Ironside replaced Kitson, who dropped to the bench and was joined by the fit-again Flynn. Home boss Johnson named the same team that started the Bramall Lane encounter. McFadzean began on the right flank and Ironside partnered Porter in attack but Yeovil were the first to show and Burn headed a McAllister corner wide inside the first two minutes. With Huish Park particularly vociferous, the home side were buoyed and took just six minutes to level the tie on aggregate - Edwards threaded a pass through the defence to meet the run of DAWSON, who calmly slotted under Long in front of the Unitedites in the open way end. Three long-range shots from McDonald failed to trouble Stech in the opening 15 minutes, although the Yeovil goalkeeper was required to tip over a Doyle effort after a break out of defence. McFadzean and Ironside also had shots blocked as the Blades looked to respond to the early setback.

Despite the May Day sunshine, the early action was frantic and the home side came close to doubling their tally on 22 minutes following another accurate pass but this time Long saved with his legs to prevent Edwards scoring. Similarly, Stech saved with his pins to stop Murphy moments later after both Ironside and Porter caused problems for the Yeovil defence. Murphy went closer still on 34 minutes, his curler beating Stech but connecting with the crossbar after an enterprising run from McFadzean and then Ironside was called offside as he met a right-wing cross. Maguire was the first in the book, guilty of fouling Madden on the edge of the box, and the resulting free-kick from McAllister deflected off the wall for a corner, but the Blades were on top as half-time approached. Another effort from Murphy deflected off Burn for a corner, which Porter looped onto the roof of the net after a spell of head tennis. Kicking towards the Blades fans in the second period, the visitors almost made the best possible start but Porter’s initial effort was blocked by Burn and the rebound from the number nine only found the side-netting. Yeovil also had two great chances early in the half but their leading scorer, Madden, could not add to his tally. Firstly, he got the better of Westlake but failed to get a good connection with his shot and Long saved comfortably, whilst the second, on 53 minutes, saw him creep in at the back post but he failed to find the target from Ayling’s cross. The first substitution of the game came from Morgan, Higginbotham replacing Westlake with Hill switching to rightback, followed by Kitson taking over from Ironside just after the hour mark. In the sapping conditions, the frantic end-to-end action continued with both sides creating half-chances as the game approached the last 20 minutes of regulation time. Maguire headed wide a Murphy cross after Porter had earned a corner, whilst Murphy also drilled across goal moments later.

As the watch ticked around to 80 minutes, Hayter connected with a Foley cross but failed to find the target from six yards, but the sucker punch was moments away. With just over 84 minutes gone, Ayling’s cross from the right saw UPSON sneak in unmarked to head past the over exposed Long. Flynn was introduced as United chased the game in the closing minutes. Doyle almost put Porter through, but Foley almost added a third after the Blades failed to clear in the left-back area. Collins was added to the forward line and Porter almost got on the end of a Murphy cross as four minutes of added time was announced. McDonald was booked for dissent but the Blades were unable to trouble Stech once again and it was the home side who celebrated at referee Gibbs’ final whistle. Yeovil: Stech, Ayling, McAllister, Webster, Upton, Hayter (Hinds 90), Foley, Madden, Burn, Edwards, Dawson. Unused: Blizzard, Williams, Stewart, Maksimenko, Young, Balanta. Blades: Long, Westlake (Higginbotham 55), Maguire, Hill, Doyle, Porter, McDonald, Collins, Murphy, Ironside (Kitson 64), McFadzean (Flynn 87). Unused: Chapell, Whitehouse, Barry, Coyne.

Chris Morgan revealed everyone inside the away dressing room at Huish Park was ‘gutted’ following the 2-0 defeat on Monday that ended the Blades hopes of promotion for another season. Speaking after seeing goals from Kevin Dawson and Ed Upson help the Glovers to a 2-1 aggregate success over his side in the play-off semi-final second-leg in Somerset, Morgan commented: “We are gutted, to concede after five minutes was bitterly disappointing, especially having worked so hard on Friday to get an advantage. “After taking the lead, I honestly think Yeovil scared themselves and they gradually went on to the back foot. “As the game grew I thought we would nick one, but we didn’t create enough and in the end we huffed and puffed and that wasn’t enough. “These lads have given us everything this season and I have told them not to underestimate what we have achieved, given all the changes we have been through as a group during the last year.” Morgan continued: “With all the young lads we have currently progressing at this football club, coupled with some excellent experienced professionals, I do genuinely believe we have a bright future.”

Sheffield Wednesday News 2012-13

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY NEWS 2 12-13 HARD WORK OWLS CONTINUES STAY UP SWFC NEWS www.swfc.co.uk

The Owls ensured Championship football will return to Hillsborough next season after defeating Middlesbrough 2-0 on Saturday. First half goals from Steve Howard and Leroy Lita earned Wednesday the crucial points on a hectic afternoon in the Championship. On a day where results elsewhere could have kept Wednesday in the division, Dave Jones’ men took matters into their own hands and produced a winning performance. Given the unpredictable nature of the Championship this term and the drama that has unfolded over the past 45 games, it was probably fitting that the

excitement continued to the last with so many issues needing a conclusion. Wednesday went into the clash knowing what was necessary to maintain second tier status and were backed by over 30,000 fans, who created an electric atmosphere in S6 prior to kick off. The Owls made a positive start in the early exchanges with Jermaine Johnson twice working an opening for a shot a goal but without testing Jason Steele. Jeremy Helan’s dangerous ball in the middle needed a well-timed clearance by Andre Bikey to deny Lita a golden chance from close range. If an early goal was to arrive, the pointers were that it would come for Wednesday, who had started strongly and on nine minutes came the big break through. A cutting through ball from Miguel Llera sent Howard clear on goal and the on-loan hitman made no mistake, firing past Steele off the underside of the crossbar to give the Owls an early advantage. After a conceding the opening goal, Boro were able to get a foothold in the game having been heavily under

pressure until that point. Winger Curtis Main was proving a useful outlet for the visitors and the tricky midfielder did well to work a sight a goal – Middlesbrough’s first – but dragged way wide of the target. Jermaine Johnson was giving the Boro backline a headache as the Jamaican fired inches wide of Steele’s left hand post. But Wednesday were not to be denied and promptly doubled their lead on the half hour. An in-swinging Lewis Buxton corner was met with a glancing header from Lita and Steele was powerless to prevent the ball nestling in the back of the net. Wednesday were relentless going forward and had a huge chance to go 3-0 ahead moments later. Helan’s cross was not sufficiently dealt with by the visitors and the ball fell for Howard, whose shot was cleared off the line by Rhys Williams, with the Boro keeper still on the deck. But the Owls continued with their pressure and a neat piece of skill on the left by Danny Pugh led to the defender striking into the side netting. Straight after the restart, Wednesday were gifted a chance when a stray ball by Ben Burgess found Lita lurking in the area, but Steele reacted quickly to close down the angle and save at the striker’s feet. Andy Halliday headed just over the bar from a Boro flag kick but otherwise the Owls were keeping the visitors at bay. Lita almost scored his second of the game at the death, as his close range header bounced inches wide but as the game entered its final stages, there was a sense of ‘job done’ for Wednesday, who saw out the four minutes of added time to secure Championship football next term.

Dave Jones has reflected on a momentous Championship campaign following the Owls’ final-day survival and says the hard work must continue. The 2-0 win over Middlesbrough guaranteed second tier football at Hillsborough next term and Jones hailed his players for keeping their nerve. He said: “It’s been a long, hard season and I can’t praise or thank the players enough for that performance. We now need to enjoy the achievement of staying in this division and work harder and harder to make sure we continue to improve. “The players were calm today, they were professional and they saw the job through. We got the early goal that we needed and that helped calm the nerves. “We got better and better, then we got the second and we looked comfortable. We created plenty of chances and I know the crowd wanted the third goal but at 2-0 after the break we had no reason to chase the third goal. “If it was going to come, it would come, but the job was done. We held the ball, we kept the ball and I thought we were professional from start to finish. “The players knew what was required from them and they have stepped up to the plate. When you are relegated, it’s not just the players and the staff affected, it’s everyone at the club. “So I’m really pleased for everyone connected with Sheffield Wednesday today and not least the supporters because they have been second to none all season.” Jones picked out key performances from Jermaine Johnson and Steve Howard as the Owls did the necessary to secure their place in the Championship. Johnson recovered from a recent hamstring strain to torment the Boro defence in the early exchanges, during which Howard posted his first goal for the club. He added: “I thought JJ was unplayable in that first 20 minutes and he did exactly what we asked of him. “We asked him to give us as much as he possibly could and he did that. He had a Grade 2 hamstring injury so to come back so quickly is credit to him. “And the big man up front gave absolutely everything today, he’s worked himself into the ground. “I was so pleased for the lad because he has been threatening that since he came here. “From the minute he’s come into the place, he’s been a pleasure to work with and he’s had an impact. “But listen, I have nothing but praise for all of them today. They knew what they had to do and they delivered.”
