SHEFFIELD LEADING THE FIELD UK Sport, one of the national bodies responsible for maximising the benefits to the country of hosting the London 2012 Olympic Games, has announced its programme of major sporting events over the coming year, and Sheffield is hosting more than any other UK city.

Of the 27 sporting events announced, six will be held in Sheffield. These events include the Fina Diving World Series in April,

the Synchronised Swimming European Champions Cup in May and the European Fencing Championships in July.

Liz Nicholl, CEO of UK Sport, said: “The UK is delivering the most comprehensive lead in programme of events ever staged by an Olympic and Paralympic host nation, and setting a new international benchmark for future hosts. The city of Sheffield continues to play an important role in UK Sport’s Lottery

funded World Class Events Programme in preparation for the London Games.

“The fantastic calendar of events to be staged in Sheffield and other cities across the UK in 2011 offers the British public a great opportunity to help give our athletes, volunteers and officials the best possible final preparation for their home Games in 2012.”

FOOD REVIEWS Swanky Franks

It’s all about the atmosphere at Swanky Franks, the newly opened American diner on Woodseats Road.

There’s no doing the hand jive or dancing on tables in gaudy outfits here. The restaurant has an intimate, family feel to it, and it’s clear the owners care about the opinions of their customers. Swanky Franks may be small, but it’s perfectly formed, with an atmosphere that will appeal to the whole age range. Its window annex is perfect for kids’ parties and the main restaurant is ideal for anything from a ladies’ night out to a romantic meal for two. The lighting is good and the food excellent.

But while the burgers looked great, they weren’t the only eye candy, for the waitresses were stunning and the deserts to die for (there was some disagreement in our party as to whether that statement should really be the other way around) and I left wishing I’d had a second stomach so I could have sampled the nachos and the hot dogs and the hot waffle desert (to any mad scientists reading this: I would like my genes mixing with those of a cow for Xmas – four stomachs would do me perfectly over the festive season, thanks!).

The food (chicken wings, BBQ ribs, and steak), arrived cooked to perfection. Potions were of a decent size and while the restaurant was exceptionally busy - packed to capacity (on a week night!) -the food came at a reasonable pace. If I had to make any criticism (and all balanced reviews should have at least one), it would be that the coleslaw wasn’t as creamy as I had hoped and that the BBQ sauce could have been a touch richer.

That said, on the other end of the scale, Swanky’s alcoholic ginger beer was a real treat, and the Toblerone cheesecake was truly divine.

If you’re thinking of paying Swanky Franks a visit, you need no further recommendation than the mere fact that the restaurant is packed to capacity almost every night of the week. Clearly, Swanky Franks is doing something right.

In just three simple steps, you can make basic kitchen safety part of your daily routine, avoiding a fire which could cost you your home or even your life.

To stop your family’s home becoming the latest of more than 1,300 households across the county to have had a cooking related fire in the last three years alone, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) is urging South Yorkshire residents to ‘Prep, Watch, and Switch’ to give kitchen fires the boot.

The simple, three step mealtime routine is designed to help prevent some of the biggest causes of kitchen fires, such as chip pans, electrical faults and unattended cooking.

• PREP- Keep electrical leads and fabrics well away from the hob and never use a chip pan • WATCH- Keep an eye on cooking at all times and never, ever leave it unattended • SWITCH- Switch off cooking appliances when you have finished cooking and before bed SYFR attended 1,339 incidents in South Yorkshire caused by cooking appliances between 2007 and 2010, accounting for more than half of all the accidental house fires the fire service goes to every year.

Of these, 235 resulted in injuries with a further three people killed in South Yorkshire as a whole in cooking related incidents.

And with the average cost of an accidental house fire estimated at more than £25,000, even smaller, less serious incidents are an

That’s why fire safety experts are insisting you follow their plan and take the three simple steps to protect you and your family.

SYFR’s head of community safety Steve Makepeace said: “Cooking is by far and away the biggest cause of accidental fires in the home. Many are minor incidents, but hundreds more result in injuries and even deaths every year.

“We’re asking people to take kitchen safety seriously and consider, perhaps as a family, establishing a mealtime routine, which follows some basic principles which will reduce the risk of a fire in your home in just a few steps.”

Older people are at particular risk of cooking related fires in the home, with over 60s accounting for almost half of all injuries in kitchen fires since 2007.

“As people get older, many find it more difficult to get out of their home safely in the event of a fire. Just two to three breaths of toxic smoke could leave you unconscious. You have less than two minutes to escape in a fire before your lungs fill up with smoke and you can’t breathe, so it’s vital that as well as having a working smoke alarm, an escape route is planned and practiced.

“We all have a responsibility to look out for the safety of vulnerable people in our communities. One of the primary ways older people and their families can protect themselves is to sign up for a free home safety check,” said Steve.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue offers free home safety checks, including the fitting of free smoke alarms where needed. To sign up, or for more fire safety advice, call SYFR’s hotline on 0114 253 2314 or text FREE to 87023.

Nevertheless, many councils are looking at making service cuts.

Will these be legal?

Social workers should assess the level of a person’s needs as low, moderate, substantial or critical.

The council decides which level of need they will meet. Most currently meet substantial or critical needs. However, at least one council in the region has consulted on a proposal to restrict support to people with critical needs only. Others may follow.

Austin Thornton, community care lawyer at Wrigleys solicitors said: “Critical needs only support may mean that councils will do just enough to keep people in the community who would otherwise have to go into a home and help people whose health is or is expected to be at significant risk. By depriving everyone else of support, the numbers in this position will rapidly increase, so this is a very short-term financial fix. It will be difficult for social service departments to both live

within their budgets and act lawfully in meeting their duties.”

Under government pressure, instead of providing people with actual care services, many councils are encouraging those with home care needs to receive payments of cash with which they can buy their own services instead.

Mr Thornton commented: “This is fine if it promotes choice and independence and is what service users want, but the councils’ legal duty is to meet need. It will be unlawful if direct payments are cut so that they are insufficient to buy the services shown in the care plan.

In some areas, there are insufficient private providers and it will be unlawful for councils to close services and give people direct payments instead if there isn’t a service to purchase.”

LIVE REVIEW by Jim C The Go! Team O2 Academy - 26/02/11

Playing to a nearly sold out upstairs room in O2 academy, The Go! Team showed that they are a band that revels in making you dance.

Transforming tricky album tracks into a live show will have been difficult, but the Brighton six-piece carried it with ease.

Early on, strong support came from the Soundcarriers. Often the most exciting experience of live music is catching a glimpse of a previously unheard band having a bit of fun with the support slot. Although many arrived only for the beginning of the headline act, those who arrived early were treated to some beautiful vocal harmonies. A steady stream of appreciative crowd members began to check the band lists on the wall next to me, fishing for a name for the Nottingham quartet. The short set was packed full of meticulously crafted pop songs and nifty solos with melodies from all instruments, a refreshing change to bassists who exist solely to accompany the guitarist.

However enjoyable the support act, they were quickly overshadowed with The Go! Team taking the stage in full attack mode. Opening with scratch heavy Hip Hop influenced T.O.R.N.A.D.O. from the bands newest release ‘Rolling Blackouts’, vocalist and dance aficionado Ninja quickly asserted why she is a pro at working the crowd. The happy dancers would have marched on town hall if commanded, instead they were content to sing, dance, jump around and get all the words wrong; to be fair Ninja raps, sings and dances with dazzling efficiency.

‘Cut and paste’ is a term oft applied to The Go! Teams lead songwriter Ian Parton. This is a little unfair. Cut and paste infers laziness and incoherency, The Go! Team are neither. Yes their songs are collages of musical genres, but well thought out and arranged, and the bands freestyle approach to live shows never strays into the indulgent or overdrawn.

The Go! Team have picked out characteristics from their favourite genres and play them out in their electric orchestra with passion and energy, an act well worth seeing.

PULLING AT THE HEARTSTRINGS Sunderland five-piece and all round trendies, Frankie & the Heartstrings have got a lot to look forward to. With countless festival appearances in the pipeline along with ever increasing tour dates under their belts, the critically acclaimed band have, it’s fair to say, pretty much taken the UK’s music scene by storm. Prior to their performance at Plug on Thursday 3rd March in association with Topman CTRL, Mercury caught up with lead singer Frankie to discuss snappy dressing, girls and partying. Bring it on…

A free gig nowadays is practically unheard of, however Topman CTRL are defying the odds by putting on an absolutely free show…yeah that’s right! Not only will the night see Frankie & the Heartstrings perform, the crowd also get to view experimental indie band Let’s Buy Happiness, selected by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. “(Topman CTRL) just approached us to play the gig. I think they were attracted to our snappy dressing,” jokes Frankie, although this really is no joke…their clothing is second to none. However for the band, the gig in question is not just about promoting their debut album, ‘Hunger’ which projected the five-piece into the public eye, it’s also about broadening the bands horizons. “We just want more friends and fans for the band, it’s a new thing for us but we really hope to broaden our fan base.”

This is no doubt an inevitable outcome; with NME voting Frankie & the Heartstrings set at 2010’s Reading Festival one of the most memorable gigs of that summer, Frankie seems excited about the jam packed year ahead. “We’re doing (the festival circuit) all again. We haven’t confirmed anything yet however it’s something we’re really set on doing… it’s all about playing in the band and meeting new people.”

Although jetting all over the world is practically a given therefore for the band, Frankie goes on to emphasise his anticipation for playing in Sheffield.

“Sheffield’s a momentous town for us. We played a gig there last year at the Leadmill and only about ten people came, but a few people from the guardian were in the crowd. It was a really nice gig and snowballed our career.” And the best part about being on tour? “Parties every night! When I was younger I either wanted to play in a band or for Sunderland FC…I’ve achieved one of these things!”

until 1999. He had not played there for five years until his CD release event on 19th November last year. After bouts of severe depression, Frank ceased his touring and recording commitments, and did not relase an album for 16 years, until his current offering, “The Cat”.

But things are looking up for the man the Stones sought out in the 70s to audition for them, after Mick and Keith turned up in his dressing room one night to tell him how much they enjoyed his playing. In October last year he re-signed to the same management who guided his career 18 years ago, has his brand new all-star band in his corner and his latest CD doing well. A brand new website is coming next month, and the release of his DVD (shot at The Pheasant - inc. 2 exclusive interviews with the man) is imminent. Plans are well advanced for his next record, which will begin recording in March and feature a stack of big name guest stars, many from the USA. European tour dates are being scheduled too.

A promo music video is being shot soon, to support the release of “You Send Me” (track 6 on “The Cat”) as a download single, with a concerted effort for mainstream, daytime national radio airplay.

Frank’s old pal, club supremo Peter Stringfellow, was in Italy on the night of the CD launch in November, but he sent this message which was read out on stage on the night: “I first met Frank during the 1960s, and he was always very special to me as part of the Sheffield music scene. Over the years our paths have kept crossing, and the last time I saw him was at the Abbeydale Picture House, about 2 or 3 years ago.”

He added: “He completely blew me away, and his set that night was just about the best thing I have ever seen on a stage. Bella and I are looking forward to hearing the new album. We just know it will be fantastic.”

Guitar legend Frank White is at Crookes Social on Friday 8th April to play a special concert.

After the massive success of his CD launch event last November which sold out in 36 hours - over 1,000 people turned away - Frank’s management added an “overflow” date to try to accommodate some of the huge number unable to get tickets for the star-studded CD release party. But extreme weather forced the cancellation of the December 3rd show.

The date on 8th April, will be the set list as the CD launch gig plus new material being tried out for the first time, ahead of recording for his next album.

Frank’s latest album, “The Cat”, has been gaining great reviews, and national radio airplay. The legendary Paul Jones played a track on his BBC Radio Two show recently, praising both the CD and Frank’s performance on vocals and guitar. Frank and his band are also due to record a session for the show this year. The new CD will be available at the gig on 8th April, when Frank will sign copies for fans after his performance.

WHERE DID CLUBS START UP? CLUBHISTORIANS.CO.UK

Where did Clubs start up? If you mention working men’s clubs to many people, they think of somewhere ‘up north’ not places ‘down south.’ But this north/south divide doesn’t hold up when looking at the history of the club movement.

Although usually imagined to be set amongst dark satanic mills and rows of grimy two-up two-downs, the geography of early clubs shows very clearly that working people all over the country wanted to have recreational spaces of their own.

Labourers in country areas were just as likely to set up clubs due to the lack of other pastimes and to break the monotony of their daily lives. London in some ways was the early ‘cradle’ of club life as many early clubs were set up there. It is often forgotten that the capital was centre to many industries, not only the docks but railway stations and depots, tile and brick making, to name a few.

Plus that is where the CIU set up its headquarters in 1862 under the Reverend Henry Solly. He always had ambitions for them to be nationwide and looked around the country for suitable ‘models’ to follow. The CIU didn’t really expand too far northward until well into the 20th century but clubs were being set up nevertheless. Two clubs compete for the title of being the ‘first’: Walthamstow WMC in London and the Coventry WMC. Both were established around 1860 and were quick to affiliate to the CIU after its establishment in 1862. Several other clubs also have long histories whilst others didn’t stay open long past the first casket of ale being consumed so never made it to the history books. The Northampton WMC is another early club with an illustrious record, being formed in 1863 and was quickly followed by others. Northern men soon saw the advantages of setting up clubs along the lines the CIU recommended.

Men from the great industries that helped to shape the nation, coal mining, wool and cotton manufacturing, ship building, to name a few. helped to establish many hundreds of clubs around the North East, Yorkshire and Lancashire, some of which can still be visited today. The manufacturing workers in the Manchester area became strong club men and at point in the late 19th century threatened to break away from CIU control and form their own break-away Union of clubs. So, remember, when you walk into a club, you are walking into a piece of living history that stretches across the country.

It was national chip week last week, so I thought we’d ask if you have anything other than the regular things you’d expect people to have with yours?

I was quite surprised at some of the suggestions such as tomato soup (not ketchup) tipped all over them, salad cream, mustard, beetroot and Branston’s pickle, or even dipped in a strawberry milkshake. Mary from Hyde Park remembers actually seeing a chippy somewhere that sold ‘battered’ mushy peas with theirs too.

Well done also to all the winners who will be occupying my winner’s row as Motown legend Mary Wilson of the Supremes comes to the City Hall this week.

There’s set to be some more excitement as we head towards the weekend here at the station since my guest on Friday’s Breakfast Show is none other than guitar legend Brian May. In this the 40th anniversary year of the band Queen he’s touring with We Will Rock You star Kerry Ellis, having completed work on their album Anthems, and the two of them will be visiting Sheffield.

Can we expect some new Queen material in the near future though perhaps? Listen in on Friday morning to find out.

LACKLUSTRE STEELERS LOSE TO STINGRAYS ICE HOCKEY

Sheffield Steelers fans left the Arena on Saturday feeling decidedly disappointed. As club official David Simms said on his Twitter “The Steelers got what they deserved tonight. Nothing.” The Steelers had to win six out of their remaining eight matches to retain the top spot and claim the league trophy, so the unexpected loss to the Hull Stingrays puts them perilously close with only room for one more loss before the title is gone.

All appeared to be going to plan, when Jeff Legue scored his 36th goal of the season, a powerplay goal at just 2:32 in the first period. However it wasn’t long before the Stingrays tied the scores, also with a powerplay goal at 7:31. The Steelers took the lead again with another powerplay goal at 15:18, and the first period closed with the home side in the lead.

In the second period Legue added his second of the night at 24:20, but that was the final Steelers goal of the night and the Stingrays took full advantage of some very silly penalties in the third period. Their first goal of the third period was at 40:49, levelling the scores, and they successfully held onto the scoreline as the Steelers fell apart. At 49:56 the Steelers lost Rod Sarich who took a slashing major penalty with a game misconduct penalty which saw him dismissed from the game. The Stingrays took the

lead at 43:50 with a goal from Konstantin Kalmikov.

Shortly after Jeff Legue, already in the penalty box for a slashing minor penalty, was dismissed from the ice with a 10 minute misconduct penalty after venting his frustrations in the penalty box over what he deemed to be a missed call on the ice. The score remained 3-4 to the Stingrays, and the Steelers fans left disappointed.

On March 20th at their next Arena home game the Steelers will hold their annual Teddy Bear Toss and Auction. Over just a few years the Auction, at which bears kindly donated by Build-a-Bear Warehouse Meadowhall and made by the Steelers players themselves are auctioned off, has raised nearly £4000 for local charities including Bluebell Wood, Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and Amy’s House Respite Nursery. In addition to that, over 5000 toys have been donated to children’s charities during the “Teddy Toss”, which sees hundreds of fans throw teddy bears and soft toys onto the ice when the Steelers score their first goal of the night, which is quite the sight to see from ice level!

This week, I visited Wrinehill Pool near Junction 16 of the M6 motorway to fish for some of the big carp known to reside within its depths. A lovely warm South Westerly, raising the air temperature to around 14 degrees and a cloudy sky meant I was full of confidence as I approached a water I’ve only fished (blanked) on once previously.

I set up in the bay into which the wind was pushing, shallower than the main part of the lake so obviously the place to warm up first as the sun rose and shone onto that end of the lake......

Confident? You bet!

I’ve been using Pallatrax stonze (www.pallatrax. co.uk) recently instead of leads, so tackling up with a couple of small stonze and mono hooklinks baited with top quality boilies, I cast out and waited.....and waited......and waited! Nothing all day unfortunately, but then no-one else on the entire lake had so much as a single bleep from their alarms either, so although fed up, I wasn’t blaming myself...

Confidence is a big thing with many anglers; I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve fished when everything has been ‘perfect’ and still not managed to land anything, and others have struggled around me. Is it me? Is it the venue? Is it the fish? Is it the weather? The truth is, it could be any or all of the reasons given; if it was easy, it would be called ‘catching’ rather than fishing and we’d all get bored and go home! I was recently asked by another angler whether a change of boiliewas a good idea after a prolonged series of blank sessions. I enquired whether he had had previous success with the baits, to which he replied “..... battered it all last year!” So why change? Obviously whatever was successful last season would be just as good this year; rarely does a boilie bait become ‘blown’ and readily associated with danger by fish (they are just fish after all!) and

on the odd occasion it does become apparent that it has lost any effectiveness, then a minor tweak often restores parity, so why change?

For example, corn has been an extremely efficient carp catcher for many years, straight from the tin; worms, dug up that morning can hardly be beaten, but you wouldn’t think of changing them, indeed you may blame the fish for not eating them! You know the bait works yet you wouldn’t consider changing it, so why is it different with boilies? To me, it comes down to the marketing and nothing more. I don’t believe that previously successful baits fail, I think the angler who fails to catch does so only because he presents the bait in an area where there are no fish or they cannot be induced to feed. I like sausages, but if you don’t put them in front of me, I can’t eat them, and if I’ve eaten enough, I’m not likely to eat any more! I still like sausages though, so don’t change the bait!

A fine, cool afternoon after heavy rain overnight greeted our visitors from Watford.

The Rovers welcomed Billy Sharp back from injury but lost Neil Sullivan to a knee injury, Gary Woods replacing the veteran keeper. The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half.

Watford got the game underway and so began the task of both teams of sussing out their opponents. Eleven minutes of of indeterminate play ensued before the Rovers won a corner on their left. This was cleared but it was the first meaningful action against goal. Minutes later, Hird, just inside the visitor’s half received the ball, passed inside to Euell who fed Sharp. Running on Sharp tried a shot from 25yards that just went past the far post. Then, in the 18th minute, Graham, for Watford got a sight of goal from 30 yards but put his shot wide. The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when the first goal went to Watford. A high cross from their left past the far post was played back into the middle by Weimann for GRAHAM to head into the net from close range. Five minutes later the Rovers attacked down their right through Oster, as a consequence of which the Rovers besieged the Watford goal but every attempt at goal, of which there were several, was blocked by a packed defence. Past the half hour and Sharp won a corner down by right corner flag. The flag kick was cleared out of defence to Graham near the halfway line.

Doncaster Rovers earned two draws on the bounce on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Watford at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Jason Euell netted his first Rovers goal since joining on loan from Blackpool, cancelling out Danny Graham’s opener as the two sides went into the half time break level.

Doncaster Rovers Chairman John Ryan called for Rovers fans to come together and get behind the boys in red and white hoops this week - and the fans responded in a huge way during Rovers’ 1-1 draw against Watford at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.

In a show of solidarity and togetherness, Mr. Ryan - in addition to the entire Rovers Board of Directors - swapped their executive boxes and seating for the Polypipe South Stand to be in amongst the supporters and the Chairman was delighted with the support generated for Sean O’Driscoll and his team.

over the bar. Four minutes from the break, a good build-up on the Rovers right gave Sharp a crack at goal from the angle of the penalty area but it went the wrong side of the far post.

Continuing to press, a Rovers attack seemed to be going nowhere when the ball was played back to Hird on the right in his own half but a lofted ball forward was won by EUELL, who took it on a few yards before firing low across the keeper and into the far corner of the net in the first minute of added time. It had been a fairly even first half and when the whistle went for the break the scoreline was also equal.

The Rovers got the second half underway but it was the visitor’s who went on to the attack, with Whichelow getting in a shot from just outside the left of the penalty area that took a big deflection off Hird to fly high over the bar. a minute later and Sordell, a half-time substitution for Watford had a shot blocked and from the rebound put the ball wide. It took the Rovers five minutes to get going but a long clearance by Woods found Euell deep in the Watford half to the left of goal. He went clear of the defenders but his shot was beaten out by Loach.

Euell got the rebound but his second attempt was deflected for a corner. Then Oster put a ball through to Sharp, who hit a high ball from 25yards over the bar. Watford then had a spell of possession but their only reward was a couple of corners that came to nothing. In the 69th minute, Hird put in a high ball for Sharp but it was headed out of defence by Taylor to Euell, who hit the ball on the up and over the bar from 25 yards.

Then the Rovers had three successive corners but gained nothing. Watford reciprocated by getting a couple of corners of their own but they were cleared.

Each side had taken it in turn to have periods of possession but as the last ten minutes came up the Rovers found their second wind. However, in the 82nd minute, Watford were reduced to ten men when their captain,

Eustace, was booked for dissent, his second booking of the match and consequently sent off for first use of the showers.

A minute later, from a free kick thirty yards out, Mills had Loach going down on his knees to make the save but spilled the ball, only collecting it in time as Euell came in. The pressure mounted on the Watford defence when Oster put a cross into the middle where it pinballed around the penalty area before Keegan got in a strike that was deflected for a corner. Minutes later and a cross from Hird was headed over by Euell and as the 90th minute came up the Rovers fans urged their team on expecting the Watford defence to crumble. But they didn’t and despite playing five minutes of added time in the Watford half the Hornets held on to a point.

Disappointment for the Rovers but they had put on another good performance in front of their own fans.

“We were full of spirit and we kept going. We were competitive; if we’d played like that against Portsmouth, we’d have beat Portsmouth not because we played great football, but because we were competitive. I think that the players have realised that no matter how much you want to play the game you want to play, you have to deal with what is happening at the minute. We’re in a fight and we’ve got to act accordingly.”

back to front. It was the way that Watford would score a goal and, with the way that we set up, it was probably the way that we would score a goal. We had to do something; we were losing too easily. We’ve not been competitive in the games that we have played. It the last two games we have been competitive and we could have got a better result in the last two games. We’d like to move the ball around more and we would like to play more and like to do a lot of things, but at the minute we’re not there, so we have to make sure that we do all of the things like the nitty gritty and the basics the best that we can.”

Billy and Stocky who are not 100% fit, but blooming heck - did they give it their all?! I thought we were unfortunate not to nick it really, but it’s a draw and the bottom three have lost. As long as we stay up this season, I will be happy; because we will never have an injury crisis like this every year. One of these days, we’ll be able to keep a full team and make a real push. I’ve never known anything like it - in fifty years of watching Rovers. It’s odd to say the least! We need to look into it and see how we can prevent it in the future - and get everybody ready for the start of next season.

“In the meantime, we have 15 more games and we’ll just battle on.”

MILLERS SECOND HALF TURN-AROUND MATCH REPORT www.themillers.co.uk

Rotherham United recovered from a half time deficit to beat Burton Albion 4-2 at the Pirelli Stadium. Johnny Mullins scored for the Millers in the first half, and second half goals from Marcus Marshall, Adam Le Fondre and Jason Taylor wrapped up victory for the visitors.

Ronnie Moore made two changes from the side that beat Accrington Stanley 2-0. Danny Coid marked his return to the club with a start in place of Dale Tonge, whilst Ryan Taylor returned in place of Liam Henderson.

Burton Albion took the lead inside the first minute after Paul Boertien picked out Greg Pearson with a cross, and the unmarked striker headed past Andy Warrington.

The Millers levelled in the fifth minute with their first attack of the game. Tom Newey launched a free kick from halfway into the Burton area, which Nick Fenton headed back into the danger area for Mullins to nod into the corner.

Three minutes later the visitors could have had the lead. Marshall latched onto a high ball into the Burton area and glanced back to Ryan Taylor.

Taylor’s first touch was excellent, but he snatched at the shot and fired over from eight yards.

At the other end, the dangerous Jacques Maghoma was giving Coid a torrid time. This time his cross from the left was completely missed by Pearson, who had made a late run into the penalty area.

On 33 minutes, a hopeful long ball forward by Warrington almost brought the Millers a goal.

Ryan Taylor galloped after the clearance, smashed a left footed shot from just inside the area which sailed just a yard wide of Adam Legzdins’ post.

The Millers appeared to be gaining the upper hand, but were dealt a sucker punch on 34 minutes when the home side re-took the lead.

Russell Penn weaved down the right wing before cutting the ball back to the onrushing Webster to side foot home past a helpless Warrington.

Le Fondre was inches away from levelling the score two minutes inside the second half.

Marshall found space down the right and drilled in a low cross, but Le Fondre couldn’t connect at full stretch.

The home side then missed a golden opportunity to double their lead on 49 minutes. Pearson was brought down by Mullins inside the area, but Aaron Webster smashed the penalty kick against the crossbar. Mullins redeemed his mistake on 68 minutes, when he headed a fierce goalbound effort from Penn over the bar.

With 18 minutes remaining, Moore introduced Henderson, and within two minutes he had created the equaliser. Pulling wide onto the right wing, he dug out a pinpoint cross for an unmarked Marshall to head home to make it 2-2.

He almost got on the scoresheet himself minutes later, curling wide from 18 yards before driving another attempt the wrong side of Legzdins’ post.

As the game entered the final minute, the Millers snatched the lead. A ball into the area wasn’t cleared by Burton, Marshall picked out Le Fondre and the prolific marksman fired into the roof of

Jason Taylor wrapped up victory in stoppage time after Nicky Law broke quickly and laid the ball into his path to slide home from 12 yards.

A new chapter in the history of Rotherham United has now been written after final plans for the clubs new stadium were revealed last week.

At a packed press conference at Don Valley Stadium, Chairman Tony Stewart, manager Ronnie Moore and representatives from Gleeds, GMI Construction and S&P revealed plans for a multi-million pound 12,000 all seated arena to be built on the old Guest and Chrimes foundry site in the centre of Rotherham.

Designs of the new stadium were shown for the first time.

“This is an historic day for Rotherham United Football Club,” said Chairman Tony Stewart.

“Two years of meticulous planning and hard work have culminated in today’s announcement and I am absolutely thrilled with the final designs. This stadium will be an iconic figure right at the centre of Rotherham and its facilities and unique design will stand up against any stadium in the country. The stadium will not only benefit this football club but will provide the centre piece of significant regeneration in Rotherham. The supporters of Rotherham United have had to wait a long time for this moment and I can assure them that we are going to build a stadium that everyone in the Rotherham community can be proud of.”

The stadium will be Project Managed by Gleeds who were selected for their impressive history of stadium projects.

“Gleeds have a strong track record in delivering stadiums in the UK and abroad,” said Simon Morris, Associate Director and Project Manager for Gleeds.

“We are particularly excited with our role as Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor and CDM Co-ordinator on a new 12,000 seat, multi-million pound stadium for Rotherham United Football Club as the new project will act as not only an important focal point for football fans, but also a key element in regenerating the town centre. The release of the plans today, shows both the imagination and ambition displayed by the Club and its sponsors and we are looking forward to delivering a world class sporting arena for the town.”

The construction of the stadium will be undertaken

by GMI Construction who, like Gleeds, have a rich history and reputation for reliability and quality in sports construction.

United’s 2011 winless streak will continue into March after a solitary strike gave Derby victory at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

Loanee Theo Robinson scored the all-important goal on 27 minutes as United’s battling display again went unrewarded.

Adams made just one change to the starting XI with Derby-born Williamson returning to face his hometown team, at the expense of the suspended Lowry. The 4-4-2 remained, with Ertl dropping into central defence to partner Collins.

The bench included Vokes, back after a hamstring strain, and Irish midfielder McAllister.

After a slow start - just a halfchance apiece in the opening ten minutes - United began to look like the better side. The first major opportunity needed Derby’s Barker to be alert, he cleared twice as Riise’s deep corner caused problems. The defender cleared ahead of Evans and then headed off the line from Cresswell in the same move.

corner from Quinn, who was very active in the early stages.

However, United’s promising start took a blow when the visitors opened the scoring from their first serious attack. A free-kick from 40 yards saw Evans and Nosworthy go for the same ball but neither could clear and Ayala’s cross from the left found ROBINSON unmarked at the back post to tap in from close range.

Savage picked up the game’s first yellow card, for a foul on Quinn, and then there was a moment of panic in the United defence when Green’s cross took a deflection and fizzed across the six-yard area.

United hit back with a couple of efforts from Evans before the half-time whistle. His first was a volley from an inviting position but he could not keep his shot down and then the second was saved by Fielding - signed on loan from Blackburn 24 hours before kick-off.

Both sides were unchanged for the start of the second period and United created a chance within the opening 30 seconds. Riise escaped his marker and delivered a good cross but after Fielding failed to gather, Lowton was off target with his left-footed effort.

Evans had a shot blocked by Pearson after Williamson and Doyle switched the play from left to right and then Collins headed over the resulting corner.

pressure from Fielding, from Nosworthy’s cross and then the striker was beaten by Barker after Evans had taken the attentions of Brayford and Ayala. Soon after, Quinn’s free-kick just evaded Ertl at the back post.

Manager Adams made all his changes in a seven-minute spell, throwing on three strikers - Bogdanovic, Bent and Vokes - and altered the formation. However, at the other end Simonsen had to push away a long-ranger from Robinson and Williamson was booked for a foul on the Derby goalscorer.

Fans in the Kop were on their feet on 72 minutes but held their heads in despair when Lowton’s header from Riise’s set-piece was pushed away from under his crossbar but Fielding and then, whilst waiting for the resulting corner, Evans and Brayford were booked.

In the remaining minutes United were on top in terms of possession and territory but the Derby defence were proving tough to break down and were certainly limiting chances.

Six minutes of added-time mainly due to Derby’s timewasting tactics - were signalled and Fielding was forced to collect under his own crossbar from Barker, attempting to clear.

The final chance of a leveller came from a corner but it almost resulted in a second Derby goal.

With everyone pushed forward, Robinson broke clear from the

edge of his own penalty area and was running out of steam by the time he reached United’s box, allowing Simonsen to save at his feet. However, there was no time for the home side to mount another attack and the visitors celebrated with their fans at the final whistle.

Micky Adams says that Marlon Harewood’s decision to join Barnsley is indicative of the problems he faces in the loan market.

The Blackpool striker elected to join the Tykes last week and Adams admits that Harewood was on his own radar: “We were in for him but he chose to go to Barnsley and maybe he didn’t fancy it here because they are higher up the table.

“When you are at the lower end of the division there is a more limited market available because Premiership players usually don’t want to tackle a relegation fight.”

The United boss, who says he is still actively looking for a further signing, also revealed why Stephen Jordan has been allowed to join Huddersfield Town on loan: “With Joe Mattock coming back to training and Matt Lowton performing pretty well I just think that Jordan is better served getting games under his belt at Huddersfield.”

Points win prizes, or so they say – but United haven’t been winning points and haven’t been winning any prizes and their defeat to Derby County summed their season up in just 90 minutes. On reflection I would like to say that in most of the games United have played quite well but have either lacked that killer instinct in front of goal or has seen a leaky defence.

Against Derby the Blades came close to scoring on a number of occasions, but credit to debutant Fielding in the Rams goal, he kept the Wizards at bay despite a number of assaults on goal. But at the other end it was a sloppy mistake from defence that allowed Theo Robinson the opportunity to take advantage.

This has been the norm all season and it’s clear to see why we are in the bottom three – at this rate it’s difficult to see us finishing above Preston and should seek advice on Scotland on how to obtain the wooden spoon.

Mr. Birch made an inspiring statement on Monday on how the football club as a whole is disappointed that this season has turned into tragedy, but yet saluted the fans who have stuck by the club.

A trip to Portsmouth is on the cards this weekend quickly followed by a home match against Forest – maybe the reserves will turn out better today at Barnsley (KO; 2pm). UTB

Optimism is alive and kicking this week. Not based upon any logic or sound judgement but merely for the purpose of this column.

Assuming that we do manage to achieve what currently seems impossible and secure a place in the Championship for next season, where will Sheffield United go from there?

The last few years have seen the majority of our better performers leave the club to be replaced by loanees and permanent signings of considerably lower pedigree.

That is the reason why we are struggling in the lower reaches of the Championship and are battling against relegation.

If, after a hypothetical survival, this same pattern continues you struggle to see how we won’t be in the same position next time round.

I said last week that we can’t compete financially with too many teams in this league anymore and if we were to stay up that would continue to be the case.

I would love to know what Kevin McCabe’s plan is looking forward because he can’t be happy with the way things are going.

But at the same time he should not be surprised. On the whole our players are about as good as the league table suggests.

We will climb the table if we invest in better players, but financially we appear unable to do so.

I suppose we need major investment to allow us to compete again but at the minute that doesn’t appear to be forthcoming. What is also unclear is whether Kevin McCabe even intends to sell or if he is just looking for a financial injection, but with the club remaining under his overall control.

Looking back maybe that doesn’t qualify as optimism.

I’ve been optimistic in considering next season after the Blades have avoided the drop, but then predicted a sorry tale of woe even if we do.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire you might say?

Gary Megson praised the honesty and endeavour of his players following the 1-0 win over Carlisle at Brunton Park on Saturday.

Tommy Miller’s only goal of the game saw the Owls triumph for the first time in 11 games and Megson was full of praise after the contest.

He said: “We were not brilliant in possession but we were so honest and hard working out there today.

“I’ve never known a spell of five away games on the trot and that travelling does take it out of the players.

“We were way down in Bournemouth on Tuesday and up here today but the players gave it absolutely everything and can be proud of their performance.”

Megson was pleased with performances all over the park and struggled to select one outstanding player.

He added: “I thought Tommy Miller was excellent today, he brings so much experience to the team and worked his socks off.

“Isaiah Osbourne had his best game for us since I’ve been here and Tommy Spurr and Mark Beevers are really getting their games together.

“We will give the players a couple of days off now to recharge the batteries after these away games before we get back to Hillsborough and we need to use our home and Hillsborough to our advantage.”

Sheffield Wednesday Women’s FC are celebrating a victory over Northern Premiership side Rochdale which saw them through to the fifth round of The FA Women’s Cup. After racking up more than 1,000 miles with away ties at Huddersfield, Stratford, Blackpool and Cardiff, Wednesday Women travelled to Rochdale and enjoyed a 3-1 win to progress in the competition.

by J.C.Snugsville Football can be a fickle sport which attracts followers of the same disposition. I am a fickle person who can blow more hot and cold air from one day to the next than the Atlantic gulf stream.

For that reason I am going to put £20 on us to go up this season at the current odds of 20/1. Football breeds clichés and I shoot them down one week after the next but what a difference a goal makes.

Indeed, perhaps one seemingly innocuous goal in a seemingly meaningless mid table fixture at Carlisle may just be the slightest flick of ash that sets fire to the woodpile that is our season.

We identified that we had a problem in midfield, this seems to have been solved in Miller and Osbourne. We identified that the defence was underperforming, Gary Megson claims that (the once highly touted) Beevers and Spurr are approaching their best form and will be playing how he wants them to from now on.

Maybe Gary Madine is the birth of a jack the lad legend up front.

We have 8 fixtures in the month of mad March. Slap me a further 24 points on our total and we would be on 64. MK Dons occupy the last playoff spot currently with 12 points (52) more than us having played 3 more games.

My word. All we did was score a goal at Brunton Park without conceding in the same game and my vision has gone funny. I’m seeing us holding the record not only for the biggest following ever to attend the Millennium Stadium but the biggest for Old Trafford also as we paint it blue and white in the playoff final with 50,000 Wednesdayites there. As we know form is everything in the run up to the playoffs – and if we got there our form wouldn’t be sizzling it would be a flame grilled zinger with all the trimmings!!

All I’ll say is this; 20/1 is a great price and there aren’t many great holiday deals available on May bank holiday weekend. And also, football fans are fickle and it’s a funny old game. It ain’t over till the fat bird sings either. Up the owls!!
