SHEFFIELD LEADING THE FIELD UK Sport, one of the national bodies responsible for maximising the benefits to the country of hosting the London 2012 Olympic Games, has announced its programme of major sporting events over the coming year, and Sheffield is hosting more than any other UK city. Of the 27 sporting events announced, six will be held in Sheffield. These events include the Fina Diving World Series in April,

the Synchronised Swimming European Champions Cup in May and the European Fencing Championships in July. Liz Nicholl, CEO of UK Sport, said: “The UK is delivering the most comprehensive lead in programme of events ever staged by an Olympic and Paralympic host nation, and setting a new international benchmark for future hosts. The city of Sheffield continues to play an important role in UK Sport’s Lottery

funded World Class Events Programme in preparation for the London Games. “The fantastic calendar of events to be staged in Sheffield and other cities across the UK in 2011 offers the British public a great opportunity to help give our athletes, volunteers and officials the best possible final preparation for their home Games in 2012.” Councillor Roger Davison, Sheffield City Councils’ Cabinet Member

for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “Sheffield is a great sporting city to be proud of, and our ability to host world class elite sporting events is unmatched in the UK. We are thrilled to be welcoming so many international athletes and sportspeople to our great city over the coming year. “The benefits to our local economy will be huge. It is estimated that around £7 million will be generated in the city as a result of our whole

major sports events programme. And we are also hoping that by hosting so many exciting events in the city we can also inspire Sheffielders to get more involved in sport in their local area. The opportunities around the lead up to London 2012 will be extraordinary for our city, and at Sheffield City Council we are determined to capitalise on every one of them.” Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, and Chair

of Yorkshire Gold, said: “It’s no surprise to see a Yorkshire city out weighing all others in the UK. It shows the wealth of sporting venues and activities our county has to offer and gives the people of Yorkshire a chance to see and participate in many different sports. With our seventh Olympic team now signed up for pre Games training in the county, Yorkshire shows it is a leading sporting attraction in the UK and across the globe.”
