STEEL CITY DOWNHILL Steve Peat in association with the Wildlife Trust and ThisiSheffield, are proud to present Sheffield’s very own Mini Downhill race, the inaugural Steel City Series event taking place in Greno Woods, Grenoside on Saturday March 5th.

The Greno Woodland appeal is an on-going fund raising campaign, where the local community is attempting to raise £1 million to buy the forest back, www. grenowoods.com. This would secure the woodlands use and maintenance for years to come, with Mountain Biking being one of the many activities in mind. All profits from the race will go directly to the Wildlife Trusts appeal.

It’s been a long time since the last ‘official’ Downhill race in Steel City, the last one was a National in Greno way back in 1995. This time around riders of all ages and abilities will be able to race in the Mini Downhill format.

The course caters for riders

of all abilities from 10 year old rippers through to seasoned Vets. Various line options are available but at speed it will be a challenge to all. The track length is around 1:30, with a dedicated and easy Fire-Road push up back to the start. It suits mid travel trail bikes rather than full on DH rigs. Whatever your reason is for attending the race, be it for the serious competition or just to have the experience of racing Downhill, we’ll make it fun for all. Riders will get two timed runs with the fastest 3 riders in each category receiving a prize. Spectators will be able to see large stretches of the track, so make sure you bring your friends and family along.

Freecaster.tv will be covering the event, producing a full length feature hosted by the inimitable Rob Warner.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN I do receive an unusually large amount of texts on my phone, including the occasional one from people who object to my passion for Sheffield Wednesday, which unfortunately tends to turn to rather silly things completely divorced from football.

Of course, the easy way out is to get my network provider to block the number, but that would go against my principle of free speech for all. I have, however, received an absolute gem this week, which I am happy to share with you. It is all about anagrams, and when you re-arrange the letters of Princess Diana it becomes ‘End is a Car’, Similarly Astronomer becomes ‘Moon Starer’, Desperation becomes ‘A rope ends it’, when you re-arrange The eyes it makes ‘They see’ A decimal point becomes ‘I’m a dot in place’ and probably the best of all ‘Mother in Law’, when the letters are swapped around becomes ‘Woman Hitler’ I tried it with my own name, and it was amazing, particularly in view of the fact that I have on several occasions been accused in this column of bias towards the wonderful Sheffield Wednesday . Rearrange Howard Copley, and quite eerily it transforms to ‘Heard Owls Copy., and my managing editor and censor, Andrew Platts becomes ‘Straw planted’ and the one from Sheffield 2 is ‘Fig Pan’

There must be some prophetic significance in one I have just worked out, Andy Gray becomes Angry Day’ which conveniently links me to the next thing on the agenda.

Much has been made of the supposed off air remarks by Andy Gray and Richard Keys, and although I find it a bit insensitive, surely the penalty has not fitted the crime. These two had the easiest job on television, talking about football, something most lads do a lot of without getting paid. Andy Gray, reportedly, received thirty five thousand pounds a week, and his unwise words must be the most expensive since Paul McCartney said ‘I do’ to Heather Mills. As usual, after a story such as this breaks, the News of the World are straight on the bandwagon dishing the dirt, with Gray being labelled a man who stole his best pal’s wife and Keys and egotistical bully who was hugely unpopular amongst his work colleagues at Sky. I do think it is a shame that the whole affair happened as Gray was a very good football pundit.

Inevitable comparisons have been made with the daytime chat show, Loose Women, where a panel of five mini celebrity women devote the whole programme castigating the male species. Sauce for the goose springs to mind. In order to safeguard my position with this newspaper, I have made a mental note to steer clear of controversy,

although my mentor and editor, Andrew Platts keeps me in check with one or two risqué remarks being deleted in the past I have often wondered how bands entertain themselves whilst on long nationwide tours, and I have discovered that a certain member of top Abba tribute band, Diana Edwards, the blond one, spends a lot of time practising pool. I have always been proud of being able to hold my own at the game, indeed always being the best one-armed player in the pub, but I am ashamed to report that playing two games against Diana was disastrous for me and I was soundly thrashed in each game. Dare I say, at this time when debates about sexism are much in the news that being beaten by a mere woman at what is predominantly a man’s game really hit hard. Some serious practice will have to be undertaken before I play Diana again.

The draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup gave our last surviving team, Sheffield Wednesday a decent pairing with Birmingham City, a match that is certainly winnable, with a good financial reward. Wednesday have signed a quality 23 year old midfielder, Isaiah Osbourne, ((no relation to Ozzie) on loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season.

John Barry, famous for composing the music for the James Bond films, as well as Born Free and Out of Africa has sadly died aged seventy seven.

THE ARTERIES RYDER ON TIME The Arteries are a bunch of guys from Swansea, Wales, who have been playing punk rock forever.

While other kids grew up and got hip or pop they just dropped out and carried on shredding like descendents of the Descendents. And it’s that spirit that sets them apart, well that and their unrelenting work ethic.

Their new album displays a myriad of rock influences, from Hot Snakes to Lagwagon by the way of AC/DC. But there’s no bulls**t and that’s why they’ve made it to the upper echelons of UK punk rock supporting the likes of The Bronx, Chuck Ragan, Less Than Jake, F***ed Up, Dillinger 4 and Propaghandi in recent years.

So for their new record, Dead Sea, (follow up to debut Blood, Sweat & Beers, on Household Name Records) The Arteries are channelling their fiercely independent attitude and self-releasing the album on their own collective DIY record label, SWFU, with a little help from Specialist Subject. What’s more Paper + Plastick, the record label founded by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello, will be picking up Dead Sea later in 2011 and putting it out on vinyl to give the artwork, all created by bassist Jamie Morrison, the platform it deserves.

They’ve been touring non stop since September playing over 50 shows all over the UK, mainland Europe and the east coast of the US including a slot at The Fest 9 in Gainesville, Fl. Such an intensive touring schedule might be daunting to some but not The Arteries and they certainly won’t be slowing down any time soon! Currently in the middle of an eastern European tour and planning a headline UK tour in Feb and supporting Fat Wreck’s Dead to Me in April 2011 is shaping up to be a busy year!

The Plug continues with a visit from a true legend of the UK music scene, someone who was at the forefront of a new wave of bands that changed the UK forever in the 90’s, Mr Shaun Ryder.

Lead singer and creator of the legendary Manchester band The Happy Mondays, Mr Ryder and his band are responsible for changing the Indie scene for good back in the 90’s with their injection of Dance music vibes. Tracks like WFL were the first to get a real dance remix (from Paul Oakenfold) that targeted the dance floor and those ravers that wanted to dance.

The Mondays have gone on to become one of the UK’s biggest selling acts and played around the world to sold out venues.

Tonight he joins The Plug for what will no doubt be a very interesting DJ set. Who knows what you’ll get, but we’re sure it’s going to be high on fun and good times. Expect the unexpected that’s for sure!

3 HOUR WEEK

Like the idea of a 3hour week? Come down to West Street Live on 2nd February, and see how they do it! Prepare yourself for some real guitar music, great hooks and heartfelt lyrics as 3Hour Week perform at West Street Live in Sheffield on Wednesday, 2nd February from 8.30pm..

The four piece original indie band from Scunthorpe have just returned from a spot of gigs in London where they played the Dublin Castle which is Suggs’ bar from Madness, and then the infamous Fiddlers Elbow in Camden “We were meant to play at West Street Live in November last year,” says Dave Gough, lead singer from the band. “Unfortunately this was cancelled due to the heap of snow we had, so we’re back now, and have a solid set that will guarantee to get your toes tapping.”

Having only been together for six months as an original band, 3hour week has been clocking up some great gigs and attracting masses of new fans.

“We’ve got a pretty hectic gig schedule at the moment,” explains Danny Richardson, guitarist.

“We’ve got gigs booked in Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley, and also some more London gigs coming up too, as well as some very exciting news that we can hopefully reveal in the next few weeks.”

3hour week are also heading to 2Fly Studios in Sheffield in March, where they will be working with Alan Smyth, the original producer of the Arctic Monkeys, and who has also produced Pulp, Reverend and The Makers and Little Man Tate, to name a few.

Friday 4th February also sees the band playing the main support for BBC Radio 1 acclaimed band, Out Like A Lion, at Love2Love in Scunthorpe.

Following their performance at last year’s Glastonbury on the BBC Introducing stage, The Chris Moyles Show team selected Bath-based indie band, Out Like A Lion, from the thousands of unsigned artists that had submitted their tunes to BBC Introducing’s website earlier this year. The band was then added to Radio 1’s playlist, and has been growing at a massive rate due to the exposure.

Personally, I’m praying for theend of the world before we see the dregs of society locked in a house and televised for sixteen weeks - yes I’m still talking about Big Brother, the House of Lords breaks up for the summer (see what I did there?).

If it’s a choice between watching another dreary moment of Big Brother or being eaten alive by rabid hamsters, well, I know which option I’d choose! We’re halfway through the series of Take Me Out, and it seems that one of the girls, Lucy, is growing increasingly enthusiastic (AKA desperate) for a date. Lucy has a hunger in her eyes that could put Rocky to shame (ITV couldn’t find a tiger so Lucy will have to settle for Eye of the Beaver). Will our diminutive Welsh lass find her perfect man or will she settle for a four foot lavatory attendant from Harrogate on the final episode?Apparently the thought of a free holiday makes people look ten times more attractive on the show than they appear in real life! Wonder Woman is coming back this year.

Producer of Ally McBeal, David E Kelly, is set to bring back the iconic Amazon, but don’t expect a camp affair, he claims. This will be a gritty show but will still feature the lasso, tiara, and invisible plane. Quite right, David, that’s not camp at all!This summer also sees the return of the Thundercats. After a twenty year break the show is being remade for a new audience and promises to be darker and edgier. ThundercatsHo! The new series of Skins saw a fantastic start for teen girl Franky, who, with two gay dads, has something of a style issue. Franky has to deal with the pressure of being an outsider in a new and often cruel environment.This series feels more mature, but is still as shocking. Gripping stuff. Like putting off a visit to Anthrax Island, I try to avoid anything on ITV2, but The Vampire

Diaries is surprisingly good. If you like vampires then you won’t be disappointed. Sure it’s utterly derivative, but it’sdefinitely watchable. On the subject of the age gap: does anyone else think a relationship between a century old vampire and a teen girl is just a bit creepy? Get those letters in to the Daily Mail at once! Talking of vampires, Being Human is back and this time the supernatural trio have moved to Wales. Now in its third season, this show moves from strength to strength and is still as funny, foul, and engaging as it has ever been. And there’s a US series starting this year, which, if past remakes have shown, won’t be as good, clever or watchable.

At the Movies The Fighter On Release: Friday This is the story of Irish boxer, Micky Ward, and his journey for the world light welterweight title.

Christian Bale is wonderful as trainer Dicky Eklund and Mark Wahlberg is back on top form as Ward, with a performance to rival that of Boogie Nights. Being a movie about boxing, you can expect it to pay homage to Rocky inplaces, but it’s superior in every way and doesn’t have a nauseating American ending. It’s funny and uplifting, this is a roller coaster ride to the top of Ward’s game with plenty of emotional twists and turns along the way. Surely a contender for one of the best movies of 2011.

BED BLOCKING Hospitals are not meant to be like prisons, but can feel like that for the elderly people who are admitted for an acute problem only to find themselves unable to get out again.

Admissions are often traumatic events carrying the risk of infections, loss of physical condition and mental health problems.

The Department of Health has admitted that the problem has been ongoing for nearly 40 years. Around 2575 beds are currently unavailable due to delayed transfers to care.

A key problem is that the hospital starts thinking about discharge only when the original reason for admission has been dealt with. It then identifies a series of problems stopping the patient from going home that take far too long to resolve. The need for coordination with social services is a common cause of delay.

According to Department of Health, planning for hospital discharge should start prior to admission for planned admissions, as soon as possible for all other admissions and that the involvement of caring family members is central to success. So if it hasn’t been mentioned, don’t think its probably all being taken care of.

Your hospital should have a discharge coordinator. Ask them about their plans and don’t be put off. It is your and your carer’s right to be involved. If you develop a problem in hospital that threatens your ability to live at home, you may need a home care package from social services Take it up with the coordinator straight away and get the planning process started.

Ask about “intermediate care” services for free intensive support enabling you to recover sufficiently to go home. There should be a joint assessment of your needs involving the hospital and social services. Make sure this is done early.

Don’t ask “when can I go”, demand “get me out of here.”

by Timelord This coming Saturday has six TV races on Channel 4 with racing from Sandown, Wetherby and Ffos Las. This latter course hosts the Welsh Champion Hurdle while at Wetherby there is the Grade 2 Towton Novices’ Chase and Sandown, the main meeting, offers the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase as its feature event.

It also has Grade 2 and Grade 3 hurdle races and a handicap chase – all on C4.

On Sunday Leopardstown has a veritable feast of NH racing with four Grade 1 events culminating with the Irish Hennessy Chase. This will be an informative meeting and offers a truly exciting prospect of top class action for the afternoon. It is definitely worth some column space here so I shall preview it below.

Starting at Sandown on Saturday: In the untelevised 1.25 Ben De Haan’s Looks Like Slim has an excellent chance of starting us off with a win after his recent third behind Grandouet. Charlie Mann’s Magic Prospect looks to be the main danger and can chase him home.

The 1.55 Totesport Contenders Hurdle has entries for both Binocular and Peddlers Cross. It remains to be seen if they will clash ahead of Cheltenham and Peddlers Cross also holds an entry for the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las, a remark that also applies to Barizan, Siberian Tiger and Noble Alan. In the hope that Peddlers Cross goes to Ffos Las, Binocular is the selection but Barizan and Noble Alan can give him a stern test at this course.

The Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at 2.25, the day’s big race from Sandown, can go the way of the exciting novice West With The Wind (Nap), who probably holds too many guns for these rivals. Of the opposition the best chances look to be held by Medermit, William’s Wishes and Rock Noir. This latter-named had very good form in France and is still unexposed over fences. I am also quite a big fan of the other two although I am not too convinced yet about Medermit’s jumping as he has made some telling errors in his last couple of races.

In the ultra-competitive 3.00 my top rated animal is Alfie Spinner who ran well recently behind Mobaasher at Warwick. There are multiple dangers in the form of Numide, Dansimar, Miss Overdrive, Shoegazer and William Hogarth to name but a few. It really is a wide open contest so with minimum Confidence I shall stick with the top rated Alfie Spinner.

Of the others I like Numide and Dansimar the best and in a narrow call will plump for Dansimar to fill the forecast spot.

It is only his advancing years that put me off selecting Eric’s Charm for the 3.35. He always runs this track well but may just find this lot a bit beyond him now. The selection therefore goes to the 9yo Killyglen who may be up to the task. In another open race Mr Robert, Chief Dan George, Burren Legend and Khatchaturian can all ensure that the selection has to go a bit to win.

My top rated in the 2.40 from Ffos Las, the Welsh Champion Hurdle, is Donald McCain’s Alegralil but he has also entered the top class Peddlers Cross and the highly rated Overturn. Peddlers Cross should find this contest much to his liking if turning out. In his absence I would go for Alegralil with the biggest dangers in my opinion coming from Overturn, Tarkari and Barizan.

In the Grade 2 Towton Novices’ Chase from Wetherby at 3.15 there are good reasons to side with Howard Johnson’s Glencree. He only won narrowly in a 2m 3f Beginners’ Chase at Catterick last time but the field wasn’t too bad and the time recorded was fast. I reckon that he can take this en route to bigger and better things in the future.

The biggest dangers look to me to be Wayward Prince and Wymott although Brian Ellison’s charge, Film Festival, also has a good rating in my system and may provide some each way value given enough runners.

The Sheffield Steelers are gearing up for a massive week, with seven games over the next two weeks.

Last weekend the team only had a game on the Sunday night, perhaps getting a well-deserved rest before the nightmare run to come. On Sunday they played a pretty evenly matched game against the Hull Stingrays. Steelers kept the upper hand throughout, Neil Clark scoring first for the visitors with a powerplay goal at 11:19 as ex-Steeler Ryan Lake sat two minutes for slashing. Coburn scored for the Stingrays at 16:37 and both teams went into the second period on level peggings. In the second it was the Steelers once again who took the lead, this time with a shot from Jason Hewitt at 23:45. The scores remained 1-2 for most of the period, before the Stingrays pulled a goal back, Uusivirta finding a way past Ervins Mustakovs in the Steelers net. In the third period Neil Clark found the back of the net for his second of the night at 45:04 and at 49:35 it was Jason Hewitt’s turn with his second of the game, putting the Steelers two goals up. Jereme Tendler gave the home fans hope with his 33rd goal of the season for the Stingrays at 53:22, but it was too little too late for the Stingrays Steelers fans were cheered when the news broke that ex-owner, Bob Phillips, had been declared bankrupt last week. The latest news will interest creditors in the Sheffield area who are still owed money following the collapse of Phillips’ South Yorkshire Ice Hockey Franchise, which folded in 1995.

Last week’s results: With Doncaster abandoned there was only Cheltenham to consider.

Out of 7 selections there was one winner at 15/8. Generally they didn’t run particularly well last week.

Neither Diamond Brook nor Pearlysteps could handle The Giant Bolster in the 1.25, Drever Route was a big disappointment in 2.00, Ohio Gold didn’t run too badly in making a lot of the running in the 3.05 but Hills of Aran was another to run poorly in the 3.35 race. He probably couldn’t have coped with the irresistible Grands Crus anyway, who was very impressive and now looks on target for a clash with Big Bucks at the Festival.

It still remains to be seen if Grands Crus can lower the colours of Big Bucks however. A persistent niggling doubt remains about him in that he has still to record a really fast time in his races and, if he does get a truly fast pace (which he will undoubtedly get at the Festival), will he still be able to come cruising through on the bridle? I am keeping an open mind on this one.

In the last race Cunning Clarets was sent off a well backed favourite but ran as if something was amiss and finished only tenth. The “if absent” selection Alarazi ran really well however and was only just touched off by a short head by Art Professor in a pulsating finish.

News reaches me this week from Richard Poole; the East Midlands Carp Study Group will be holding a slide show and talk at Underwood Miners Welfare just off the Junction 27 of the M1. The special guest speaker on the night will be Simon Scott of Sparsholt College who many anglers will know from his television work.

Encompassing a National Angling School, a new show, and a National Angling Centre, Cyril outlined his ideas to the biggest gathering of angling and business minds I’ve ever seen in one place. Dave Smith of the ‘Get Hooked on Fishing’ charity and level 2 coach at Cudmore gave a comprehensive presentation showing how almost 3500 young anglers have already taken part in structured lessons to teach the basics of angling. Over 1/3rd of these students are new to the sport which is a sign of just how successful the National School will be. Also discussed were plans for a new angling show to be held in conjunction with the ‘Fish o’ Mania’ finals this year. After the withdrawal of Bauer Media from organising the occasion, Cudmore are confident they can ‘go it alone’ and produce a show which will better all previous events. Manufacturers would be offered cut price overheads to allow them to give better deals to visitors and push turnover through the roof. Reduced entry fees of around £6 will increase footfall through the turnstiles and the new show will develop and grow as a result of banner advertising from media groups and publications; this has the effect of dramatically lowering costs to the show organisers who, in effect, get free publicity! Cyril certainly has the drive and capacity to make it work; it’s up to the rest to follow…..

Starting about half past five there was some heavy rain at times before it petered out a couple of hours later. However, at the kick off time it appeared to have stopped altogether so that the scene was set for the South Yorkshire “Derby” match against Barnsley.

The Rovers were unchanged from Saturday’s match at Ipswich. Barnsley were attired on a natty strip of white shirts with purple trimmings and purple shorts with white trimming together with purple socks.

The Rovers defended the South Stand end in the first half.

The Rovers kicked off and got in the first effort at goal when Sharp’s low shot from the edge of the penalty area was comfortably held by Steele. As each side probed for an advantage the next effort on goal came from Barnsley in the tenth minute when Colace hit a good drive from 30yards that Sullivan caught well diving to his left. Sharp replied at the other end from 25yards but put wide. Then Hayter lifted the ball over the Barnsley back line for Sharp to go for but Steele was out quickly to collect at the edge of the area. In the 15th minute a cross from the left

Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O’Driscoll has moved to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window, by signing highlyrated young midfielder Ryan Burge on a short-term deal, subject to international clearance being granted.

The 23 year-old midfielder joins Doncaster Rovers from Spanish side Jerez Industrial CF, who are part of Glenn Hoddle’s Academy and compete in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

Admired by both Manchester United and Manchester City at a young age, Burge began his career at Birmingham City, where he was offered a three-year deal by Blues at the age of 17. After making one appearance for the St. Andrews side, Burge departed the Midlands - joining Barnet for a short spell.

Then Butterfield put over a cross from the left that Gary O’Connor slid in at the far post to put wide. Then, in the 54th minute, came the breakthrough - for Barnsley.

Hassell got away down the visitor’s right, put over a good cross for HAYNES to head past Sullivan from close range. Barnsley kept the pressure on making it difficult for the Rovers to get into the game, their only effort of note came after 65 minutes when Hayter headed wide from a Coppinger cross. However, two minutes later, Barnsley got a second goal. HAYNES collected the ball on the right, cut inside Lockwood and hit a left foot drive from 15 yards that Sullivan got down to but the ball squirmed away backwards and over the goal-line.

Barnsley were on top now and were determined to keep it that way. The Rovers played the ball around in the middle of the park fine but couldn’t find a way to

As the last ten minutes came up the Rovers stepped up their game but a couple of corners came to nought whilst at the other end O’Brien hit a 35yarder into the sidenetting. In the 90th minute, coppinger passed inside for Hayter to stab goalwards but it went wide of the far post. Into added time and a corner to the home team was headed back from the far post for James O’Connor to head over the bar from two yards. The final action rested with Barnsley when Haynes, looking for his hat trick, fired wide from 25yards. Barnsley had dominated the second half from the kick off so that once again the Rovers suffered from ‘second half blues’.

United have made a transfer deadline day purchase, bringing in combative central defender Neill Collins.

The Blades have agreed an undisclosed fee with Leeds United for the services of the 27-year-old.

Collins returns to Bramall Lane following a loan spell in the 2005/06 campaign when he played two games, including a Steel City derby victory at Hillsborough.

Gary Speed’s first International team selection as the manager of Wales includes Ched Evans.

Due to printing deadlines this article was written prior to our fixture with Leicester last night, having gone into the game level on points with Palace we hope that United have done enough to forge some gap between themselves and the bottom three.

Relegation to League One would be disastrous and could potentially ruin the club financially. United had a terrible January, dumped out of the FA Cup and failed to win a Championship fixture – they head into February with six games ahead of them, two of which are opponents currently below them in the table.

However in the past the February month as traditionally proved to be an Achilles heel, during the promotion season of 2005/06 season the Blades picked up seven points out of a total of eighteen.

Third tier football is unthinkable right now and although it is a possibility that they could become another team who once roamed the Premiership to struggle to keep afloat – but it must be said that the quality of football has improved and with new signings coming in we hope that next season they will still be just one step behind the elite.

Kyle Bartley’s loan deal at Bramall Lane has been cancelled by mutual agreement between Sheffield United and Arsenal.

The 19 year old defender was on a year long deal after being at the Lane on loan at the end of last season and has made 21 league starts this term.

The Premiership club approached the Blades about the player returning to the Emirates following the Blades recruitment of Neill Collins and agreement for him to do so was reached, with Micky Adams explaining: “Under the circumstances, having brought in Neill Collins who is also a centre-back but on a permanent deal, we felt that it was something we could do, especially as it frees up a loan.

“I would like to thank Arsenal and Kyle for their help over the last few months and wish him well as his career develops.

“It is important that we start building continuity in the team, especially in defence, as soon as we can, and that must be based on having players here who belong to this club and have its interests at heart.”

I used to love transfer deadline day.

The constant speculation at which much travelled veteran would be signing for the Blades, musings at how much money would be afforded to the manager for new recruits and trying to work out how many non-goal scoring strikers Neil Warnock could feasibly sign in one day.

Without wanting to judge our new signings before they pull on the shirt, it is clear that we are shopping in a different market now and we are in for a worrying end to the season.

I can appreciate that we can’t afford to sign the type of player that we could in the past, but at the same time we can’t afford to go down.

Our club has conceded 43 goals this season, and with one of the worst goal differences in the division at -17, we are in an extremely precarious position.

We have sold four fifths of what was one of the Championship’s meanest defences over the last 18 months, with Paddy Kenny, Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton and Matt Kilgallon all part of a fire sale to keep the club out of financial hot water.

The bottom line is that we have not replaced them with anything like the same quality through a mixture of managerial mistakes in identifying replacements and the fact that sufficient finance hasn’t been made available.

It makes me feel slightly nauseous when I even try to comprehend where our most pressing problems lie and whether we will be able to overcome them before the end of the season.

In the signings of Lowry, Doyle and Collins it is clear that defensive frailties are Micky Adams’ gravest concern, although he will surely have taken note of our struggle to convert chances at the other end.

All in all quite a negative one this week, but we dust ourselves off and carry on.

Micky Adams asked us for time and while slightly worried by the looming prospect of relegation, we must give it to him.

Sheffield Wednesday eased their way into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in eleven years with a comfortable 4-1 win over ten-man Hereford United.

The Owls survived an early scare when Stuart Fleetwood gave the visitors a shock lead but Alan Irvine’s side hit back through Darren Potter, Jermaine Johnson and two Clinton Morrison penalties - the first of which led to the dismissal of Joe Heath.

The Owls made three changes for the cup clash, with Daniel Jones, Clinton Morrison and Paul Heffernan all starting against the in-form Bulls.

Hereford arrived at Hillsborough on the back of five straight wins and showed exactly why with a goal inside nine minutes.

Jake Jervis found space down the right flank and his cross landed kindly at the feet of Fleetwood, who drilled high into the back of the Kop net.

But the Owls kept their composure and were back in the contest six minutes later.

Jones raced down the left and pulled back for Potter to smash an unstoppable shot past Adam Bartlett from the edge of the area.

Wednesday took the initiative as the first half unfolded and bossed possession, with one six-man move ending with Heffernan forcing a smart save from Bartlett.

Morrison scooped over the bar from the resulting corner before Jonas Kovacs headed onto the roof of the net at the other end in a rare Hereford attack.

The game promptly reverted to type, though, and Bartlett had to be at his best to push a Gary Teale piledriver round the post.

But the Bulls were far from lying down and Wednesday were given a reminder of what they could do on the counter when Fleetwood broke free down the middle but the forward prodded past the post.

Michael Morrison went close for the Owls just before half time with a back post header and a goal at that point would deservedly have seen the home side in the driving seat.

And Wednesday started the second half on the front foot, winning a string of corners and generally dominating.

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the loan signing of Isaiah Osbourne from Premiership side Aston Villa.

The central midfielder joins the Owls until the end of the current campaign and becomes Alan Irvine’s fifth capture of the January transfer window.

Osbourne came through the ranks at Villa and has made 30 senior appearances for the club.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed two previous loan spells away from Villa Park, firstly with Nottingham Forest and then Middlesbrough.

Darren Potter is hopeful that the Owls can get their away form back on track when they face Peterborough at London Road on Tuesday night.

After an impressive start to the season away from home, Wednesday have stumbled of late, with four successive league defeats on the road.

But Potter says the team can draw confidence from the crushing cup win over Hereford on Saturday to take into the Posh trip.

He said: “It was really encouraging to be back amongst the goals at the weekend.

Hereford came to Hillsborough in good form, they took the lead, but the lads showed good character to come back and score four goals.

“Hopefully, we can now take that form into the Peterborough game tonight.”

Meanwhile, Potter - on target against the Bulls - says there was no negative reaction on his part regarding his substitution on Saturday.

The midfielder insists it was a mixture of confusion and frustration that followed his early exit in the second half.

He said: “I thought the message hadn’t got through whether I was injured or not - that’s why I was angry, not because I had been substituted.

“I was very frustrated. I did take my shirt off, but I didn’t slam it down or anything. I have too much respect for the club to do anything like that. I just passed it to the kit man and put a clean top on.

Well they say actions speak louder than words, and Milan Mandaric has backed up his vote of confidence in Alan Irvine by orchestrating another signing on deadline day and promising further new faces when the loan window opens next week.

Whatever your opinion of Irvine is, few would argue that given the stage of the season a change of management would probably be a bigger gamble than giving Irvine a couple of months to see how his ‘Second Round Draft’ of players gel together. As I write the result of the Peterborough game is unknown – but one thing is certain which is that as disappointing as it is to be in 12th position a haul of 6 points from the Posh & MK Dons fixtures would significantly close the gap between us and the playoff places. The only option we have in this toughest of Februaries is to dig in and absorb the pressure. This applies not only in the league but the cup also. With the utmost respect to Birmingham City FC I would suggest that this draw would have been the least popular as the fans choice. Judging by the performance of the towering Nikola Zigic in the blues’ tremendous league cup semi final win over West Ham last week I would suggest our back four need to prepare for a physical tie at St Andrews.

Another development this week is the resignation of Howard Wilkinson from the board. It would be unfair to write on the subject of Sheffield Wednesday this week without putting on record sincere and heartfelt thanks and best wishes to Howard for his efforts for the club over the last year. It is very easy to underestimate how influential Wilko has been in the whole Mandaric takeover – Howard took the wheel of the Titanic shortly after the iceberg was struck yet he still managed to get us safely to port; Howard Wilkinson we salute you!

Finally it would not be a JC Snugsville to comment on the fact that yesterday a total of EIGHTY FIVE MILLION POUNDS was spent on two players. One is currently injured reportedly after a fall from a bar stool, the other quite plainly has had no interest in playing for his club the first half of this season. I shall say no more.
