WHO WILL BE THE NEXT SHEFFIELD LEGEND? It’s your chance to have a say in who you would like to join the exclusive ‘walk of fame’ outside Sheffield’s Town Hall.

Local people are now being invited to nominate the next Sheffield Legend and join the likes of local heroes Sean Bean, Def Leppard, Seb Coe and Michael Palin, The people of Sheffield are being asked to nominate their favourites, then an independent panel will be given the tough task of choosing this year’s Legend.

Sheffield Legends honour the city’s heroes from various walks of life – from the arts to science and from sport to industry. They have a special plaque set into the pavement

‘Hollywood Boulevardstyle’ – believed to be the first of its kind in this country. Those honoured will be invited for an ‘unveiling’ ceremony outside the Town Hall in the heart of the city.

When the initiative was launched six years ago hundreds of nominations were received from the public for their heroes to become Sheffield Legends. These were considered by an independent Selection Board representing various sectors in the city - the arts, sport, education, media and business - which was chaired by the Lord Mayor.

So far 16 celebrities have been honoured, although not all have unveiled their plaques yet. They represent a

wide cross-section of activities, but all have a strong connection with Sheffield - either being born in the city or having lived here for many years and are strongly associated with the city: · Gordon Banks England’s World Cup winning goalkeeper. · Sean Bean internationally-renown actor. · Jarvis Cocker - iconic lead singer with Pulp. · Joe Cocker internationally-famous musician. · Sebastian Coe Olympic medal winner and Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. · Derek Dooley – Sheffield footballing legend with both United and Wednesday.

· Professor Barry Hancock – cancer treatment specialist. · Brendan Ingle – boxing trainer to world champions. · Def Leppard - topselling rock band. · David Mellor – internationallyacclaimed designer. · Michael Palin - famous film and television personality. · Joe Scarborough – unique Sheffield artist. · Helen Sharman - first British astronaut. · Joe Simpson - one of the world’s premier rock climbers. · Michael Vaughan – Yorkshire and England cricket captain. · Clinton Woods – World Champion boxer.

“I hope everyone will send in their favourite local heroes to make our Sheffield Legends truly representative of the celebrities from many walks of life associated with this city. The aim is to keep the Legends topical, so we are looking for people who the public can relate to today.”

Those eligible for the awards must either have been born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city and must have achieved recognition at national or preferably at international level.

Nominees will be required to write a short note of around 50 words to say why their choice should receive the honour. All the nominations will be considered by the Selection Board.

Nominations may be sent to the Lord Mayor, Sheffield City Council at the Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1 2HH by post clearly marked ‘Sheffield Legends’ or by e-mail to lordmayor@ sheffield.gov.uk by Friday 11 February.

COPLEYʼS COLUMN It is an old saying that time flies when you are enjoying yourself, and I subscribe to this in particular with regard to my regular Tuesday night visit to the White Swan in Dronfield to be at Russ Dennett’s open mic night which celebrates being the best mid-week entertainment for one year this week.

Russ, as an ex member of the Human League and an amazing exponent of the guitar is a bit of a cult figure locally, and he manages this night with his rapacious wit and excellent musical accompaniment to the huge amount of talent on view every week. I would like to thank Russ in this column for the many hours of pleasure he has given to me and the multitude of his followers, and also being a particular close pal.

Speaking of anniversaries, Sean Goldsmith and Beckie Measures celebrated doing the morning show on Peak Radio this week for nine years by hosting the show for nine hours. This is amazing, the fact that Sean, being of the male gender, can actually talk for nine hours, although in my experience, this has never been a problem for the female members in my life. These two are fabulous presenters, so much so that they have ousted Toby Foster, no mean entertainer, from my wake up start to the day on my clock

GREYSTONES LEADS THE WAY

Crookes sees the return of Big Business, ex Jimmy James Vagabonds, to the club on Saturday February 5th.

One of the few soul bands around to have members that have appeared on Top of the Pops and featuring a brass section that includes an original Vagabond, Andy Platts and ex Blue’s Brothers saxophonist ‘Big John Crookes’ this soul party has to be a a night not to be missed.

New front man Andy debuts at Crookes after sensationally taking over the reigns of frontman last year following the unfortunate death of former clubland favourite Andy King.

Ex Vagabond keyboard wizard Alan Kirk and ex Whales drummer Craig Daynes make up this fabulous soul quintet. It’s a welcome return to Crookes and a welcome return for a Sheffield double header starting at Smithywood WMC this Saturday.

There is a simple truth that seems to escape most people in the higher reaches of the licensed trade industry; a good pub should have good beer.

Licensees for the most part recognise this fact; the customers are certainly aware of it. And yet the owners of the largest chains have seemed for the most part oblivious of this simple fact.

However there are signs that they are waking up to reality.

Enterprise, owners of the former Highcliffe Hotel in Sheffield, recently teamed up with Thorncliffe Breweries, re-opening the pub under the new name of the Greystones. Crucially the key to this arrangement was the removal by Enterprise of the traditional tie to their supplies.

With the exception of Guinness and keg lagers, Thornbridge are free to sell both their own brews and bottled beers from around the world – and the results have been

spectacular, with over 25,000 pints of Thornbridge ales being sold in the first two months of opening.

Enterprise are now exploring further partnerships, but they lag behind Everards in Leicestershire; since 2007 they have re-opened twenty one pubs in partnership with twelve local microbreweries, and the results have been spectacular for both parties.

We have recently featured the Blake Hotel, the Sheffield Tap and the Nag’s Head on these pages – and we are delighted to add the Greystones to the list of local successes, as we see an increase in the recognition of Sheffield, with its relatively healthy pub market as a major centre of micro-brewing. All these stories have a common theme; good ales (not just brews for the anoraks and the real ale community), a return to traditional “wet” pub formats, and a developing understanding of what we really want from a night in the pub.

Mention the name Rick Wakeman for 50 different people and ask them what he does, and you are likely to get 50 different answers! Thanks to 50,000,000 record sales around the world, which have included more than 150 record releases, 50+ DVDs, soundtracks for more than 25 films, numerous high profile television appearances including those of Countdown, Top Gear and Grumpy Old Men, and more than 4,000 world-wide concert performances of one sort or another, Rick has endeared himself to all genres and all ages, a rare accomplishment in this day an age!

He is equally at home on a stage with his band The English Rock Ensemble as he is with a symphony orchestra and chamber choir and is equally at home in a 400 seater theatre as he is playing Madison Square Garden.

Starting from scratch, Shalaka showed painstaking attention to detail to input the tracks from over 1300 CD’s into the new system which makes it easier for volunteers to find required tracks for requests and programmes. The award was given as a mark of thanks for the commitment shown to the project which will be of benefit to the station for many years to come.

GOVERNMENT GREEN LIGHT FOR SUPERMARKETS TO KEEP SELLING BOOZE AT POCKET-MONEY PRICES CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale has expressed regret at the Government’s failure to ban the sale of alcohol below cost.

The Government are instead banning the sale of alcohol at below excise duty and VAT which is just 47p a pint. This will have virtually no impact on the rock-bottom prices of beer in supermarkets and will do nothing to alleviate the pressure on pubs where the price of a pint is rapidly approaching £3.

CAMRA has long been campaigning for a ban on below cost sales of alcohol, which was a clear manifesto commitment of both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

However, for any ban to have a meaningful impact it is vital that the cost of alcohol production is factored in, which for beer will produce a floor price of around 40p a unit – double what is being proposed.

Mike Benner, CAMRA’s Chief Executive said: “Today’s decision means pubs will continue to close as they are undercut by supermarkets selling canned beers at pocket money prices. A ban on selling beer at below duty plus VAT will have a negligible impact as supermarkets sell only a tiny proportion of beer at below these levels.”

“CAMRA believes a floor price of around 40 pence a unit would be required to prevent supermarkets selling alcohol at a loss. The Government’s decision to set a floor price of only 21 pence a unit is a betrayal of their previous promise to ban the sale of alcohol at below cost and means supermarkets will continue to be able to sell alcohol as a loss leader.”

“It is a blow to pub goers that with pub prices approaching £3 a pint the Government have decided to give the green light to the supermarkets to charge as little as 47 pence a pint.”

“The Government appear all too ready to impose higher costs and regulations on wellrun community pubs but are prepared to turn a blind eye to the irresponsible attitude towards alcohol expressed by the supermarkets.”

ENTER THE DRAGONʼS DEN MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN

I’ve been mentioning on the Breakfast Show some interesting inventions to hit the headlines.

Just last week it was reported that a business consultant in the States who had often had brainwave ideas whilst taking a dip had come up with a waterproof pen and pad kit complete with suction mounts to stick it to your shower cubicle. The thinking of course is that you can jot down any ideas even though you’re enjoying a darn good soak and not worry about it getting wet.

As I mentioned, the downside to that is if you practically blind yourself with shampoo like I do.

You’d have no idea where to find the thing let alone see what you’d written down.

The funniest though has to be the “lunchtime clock” to try and bag yourself a little extra break time whilst at work. It looks like any other with the numbers 1 to 12 around the outside, a big and little hand, but when it reaches 11 o’clock starts to gain time, so as when your boss supposedly sees it’s 12 o’clock and sends you off to enjoy your lunch hour it is actually only still 11.48. There’d be no worries about getting back early 60 minutes later because the clock then automatically loses time.

When you see it’s 1 o’clock, it will actually be 1 o’clock.

I don’t know what happens to the missing 12 minutes workload though. I suppose if you get paid 12 minutes overtime if you do unfortunately have to stay and finish it at the end of the day it’s an even bigger bonus. Hmmm.

SAVE THE WORKING MENʼS CLUB AND THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY! The clubs are fighting back! This is the message for the government and politicians from the grassroots of our local communities, and nothing typifies this message more than the Facebook group recently created

by Shaun Whittaker, Concert Secretary of Doncaster’s Intake WMC. Like many people, Shaun is a passionate believer in the local club scene, and should be applauded for his initiative in starting a pressure group which focuses on the problems faced by this unique part of our cultural heritage, and devoting his time to promoting this cause through traditional media such as local radio and the press.

One of the blessings (and admittedly sometimes a curse!) of this modern digital age is the growth in networking sites, Facebook leading the way by some considerable distance. For our industry it is a powerful weapon; it would have been very difficult for so many like-minded people to get together with a view to exerting pressure on government. Yet even Shaun’s fledgling site has gained almost one thousand members in its first week!

The Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign boasts a growing number of MPs amongst its supporters – whether through genuine belief in our aims, or simply through political expediency. Undeniably, there is a groundswell of opinion – rapidly gathering momentum – to amend the draconian smoking laws. In a recent 10-minute rule bill in the Commons, 86 MPs voted in favour of an amendment.

There is no doubt that the live entertainment industry in the UK needs Clubland to survive and prosper; there is no finer grounding for an aspiring artist than an apprenticeship in the concert rooms of the WMC, or the stage in the local pub.

FARMERS PLANNING FOR GROWTH IN THE SPRING! When farmer John Gill first thought about diversifying some six years ago, to supplement the income from his dairy herd, he readily admits that he never imagined that Watt House Farm in Bradfield would become the base for one of the region’s most successful microbreweries!

Bradfield Brewery, and its award-winning range of Farmer’s Ales, was born out of a hobby – John and his son Richard were keen home brewers, and decided to try and make a little extra income from their hobby, turning a disused cattle shed into a state-of-the-art micro brewery.

Within a short space of time the word had spread, and demand was so great that they decided to create a full-time business, engaging National Champion Paul Ward as the Head Brewer, and investing in their own borehole – providing a permanent source of natural spring water which, together with their own specially developed yeast culture, helps give Bradfield Ales their own unique taste.

Just like any farm, this is a real family business – John and wife Sue run the business, son Richard is an apprentice brewer

working alongside Paul and learning the secrets of the trade, while daughter Lisa attends to the clerical work and runs the marketing – and Bradfield Ales are now delivered to a range of venues from Newcastle to Oxford!

These are exciting times for the business - such is the demand for the ales that they are now brewing two and sometimes even three times per day – to cope with this demand plans are well under way to install new a new 40 barrel brewing unit which will increase manufacturing capacity by over 400%, and John hopes to have this unit fully functional before the brewery’s sixth birthday in April!

A great deal of thought has gone in to the running of the brewery, with one eye, as you would expect from a farmer, on the “green” issues. The spring serves not only the brewing process, but also the washing shed, so no tap water at all is used at any stage of production.

The buildings have been cleverly designed to take advantage of the hilly terrain in High Bradfield – the flow of the ales around the brewing process are mainly gravity-fed, right up to the bottling and barrelling stage, so neither gas pressure nor

power are required to transfer the finished product into its consumer-ready state!

Even local deliveries are occasionally environmentally friendly! Percheron dray horses Charlie and China make regular appearances in the area, pulling the Bradfield Brewery dray – and John is proud of his latest acquisition, having managed to purchase an old Wards Brewery dray from Vaux in Sunderland!

This is now in a barn awaiting a full restoration in the Spring, and will no doubt be appearing in aid of various local good causes later in the year.

All in all these are exciting times for John and the family. The official brewery tap – the Nag’s Head – featured in the Mercury recently, and is now proving an immensely popular venue – as is another of our featured pubs, the Blake Hotel, which reopened after six years in December of 2010. The distribution network is widening, and the additional capacity means demand can be satisfied. We are delighted to see the continued growth (perhaps even recovery? –ed.) in the traditional pub market and everyone here at the Mercury is looking forward to sampling some of the new brews Paul and Richard have planned for 2011!

LIVE REVIEW - Kt Evans artist: Higher Rhythm / PIY Venue: Leadmill 15/01/11

Leadmill, I salute you. Not only did you seamlessly showcase a selection of first class, home-grown bands and musicians, you also reignited Sheffield’s love of local music.

Having being somewhat ‘neglected’ my a lack of decent acts coming to Sheffield recently, the ten band extravaganza on Saturday 15th January had, it’s fair to say, quite a bit to live up to. But hey Leadmill, you know how to make like Paul Daniels and sure as hell pulled it out the hat. So there it is…a good ole salute.

Spread across two stages in both rooms of the venue, large crowds saw The Little Secrets, Stone Ugly, Dirty Jeans, The Beau and The Salvo take to the floor in the early stages of the event, which ran from 6.30pm – 10.30pm. Highlights of the night came in the newly formed Whispering Dolls (formally Dead Delta) who demonstrated they still have what it takes to be a front runner in the local scene. Headlining spots were snapped up by four-piece Alvarez Kings, voted the best band of 2010 by Toast Magazine and Elephant Keys who are to release their new single ‘Sebastian’ in the coming months. Both professional and clearly passionate, they in turn didn’t fail to deliver some serious belters, indicating they sure know what it takes to hype up their audience.

The tone was lowered throughout the final stages of Elephant Keys set when solo artist Dan Williamson joined front man, Phil Goodwin to perform a sensitive acoustic track. Contrast that to the bolshy, riprawriness of Elephant Keys and its evident just how diverse and unique the cities music scene really is. Top acts for a top night. Thank you Leadmill.

SICK PUPPIES

Sick Puppies don’t do things halfway, not when they’re playing live in front of their rabid fans, nor when they tackled Tri-Polar, their second major label album for RMR/ Virgin/EMI and follow-up to Dressed Up As Life.

When the Australian band decided to break through in the U.S., founding members, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Shimon Moore and his high school classmate, bassist Emma Anzai, simply picked up and moved lock, stock and guitar amps to L.A., advertised for a drummer on Craig’s List, and were soon joined by Orange County native Mark Goodwin.

After getting signed and putting out their debut, the trio made their own video independently to accompanying the first single, “All the Same,” shot in a Sydney shopping mall in which fellow Aussie Juan Mann held up a hand-written placard offering passersby “Free Hugs.” The clip attracted over 43 million views on YouTube alone, and spawned a world-wide phenomenon.

Three years later, Sick Puppies are back with a new album and producing team from Dressed Up As Life, Rock Mafia’s Antonina Armato and Tim James. Together they’ve created a sound that reflects the past four whirlwind years spent in the rock and roll fast lane, on the grueling tour grind, honing their chops until they were a finely tuned powerhouse ready to let loose with the anger, frustration and triumphs built up from all that road work.

Songs like the storming first single, “You’re Going Down,” which is being used as the theme song for the WWE’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view broadcast, and “Street Fighter War,” which was used as part of the national marketing campaign for the popular video game Street Fighter IV, distill all that energy into high-powered festival anthems.

“We wanted a big-sounding record that would connect with live audiences,” adds Shimon. “We just stuck with what we knew worked from playing over the last few years. We had a little more creative control in the studio this time, more ideas about what we wanted to sound like.

“Second time around, you’re always a little bit more aware of how to do things,” says Emma. “We’re really beginning to know what kind of sound we wanted, and how to achieve certain effects. We’re now mindful of how these songs will come across live.”

New songs like the Buzzcocks-meets-Pistols drug-laced speed-punk of “Survive,” the heavy Nirvana-esque grunge drone of “I Hate You” and the jagged shards of Rage Against the Machine rhythms in “So What I Lied” give Tri-Polar its feel of cathartic build-and-release.

Now that Tri-Polar is done, Sick Puppies are preparing to get back out there and do what they do best—play live.

“Our whole spirit comes together when we’re on-stage,” says Emma. “When we get ready to go out there, we’re like gladiators entering the arena.”

In addition to concerts, Sick Puppies can be seen on theatre screens in Rock Prophecies, an award-winning documentary about legendary rock photographer Robert M. Knight, who famously took the band under his wing when they first came to the States. The film also includes interviews with Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Slash, Steve Vai, Billy Gibbons, Def Leppard, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Rick Nielsen and Joe Bonamassa, among others, who knew Knight, dubbed by some, “the Forrest Gump of rock and roll.”

“He was the first person we met and got to know when we came over here,” says Emma. “He introduced us to other people we still work with to this day.”

Sick Puppies have more than survived since their arrival in the U.S. by dedicating themselves to getting their music heard on a variety of different media—including TV commercials, theme songs, “Free Hugs” videos, documentary films and, of course, the Internet.

“There are just so many options out there,” acknowledges Shimon. “Every band needs a kind of hook, and we’ve been lucky because we’ve had more opportunities than a lot of others get.”

“I used to be much more concerned with fame, fortune and rock stardom,” admits Shimon. “Now my main focus is joy. A few things have happened to me over the last few years which made me realize nothing is forever. There’s always a negative and positive way to look at stuff, and you can eliminate the negative by focusing on the positive, but that’s the most difficult thing in the world to do.”

On Tri-Polar, Sick Puppies see the glass as not just halffull, but brimming over with the kind of solid-rock anthems that’ll remind even the most cynical that absolutely anything is possible.

Tangled On Release: Friday 28th January Rapunzel is a modern princess, a butt kicking, no nonsense taking, ready for anything princess of the new millennium (meaning she’s hard around the edges while still being all soft and gooey in the centre - does anyone suddenly really fancy a Murray Mint?). Magical healing flowers are growing in Rapunzel’s hair, and in order to harness that power and stay eternally young, her captor, Mother Gothel, keeps our poor princess locked away in a tower.

When gazing longingly from the lofty heights of her prison, Rapunzel has seen the place of lights in the far off distance, and when brash ruffian, Flynn, breaks into the tower, Rapunzel takes him on a journey to discover the secret of those distant lights – it’s basically a road trip on foot, with fights, chases, and little a bit of romance along the way.

Tangled is presented in the ubiquitous 3D that’s blighting the industry of late. Sadly, the 3D visuals aren’t fantastic, save for a scene toward the end with the enormous – but, oh Michael, I’m spoiling the plot! This is a heart-warming movie with a lot to offer. It’s really very funny as well as being terribly endearing.

Get tangled up in the magical world of Rapunzel. This is a movie which will put Disney (after a few bleak years) firmly back on the movie making map. It’s gorgeous to look at and a great adventure that will appeal to all ages. This isn’t just the movie of the week; it’s the movie of the month.

Score: 9/10 – Unmissable

Hereafter On Release: Friday Clint Eastwood doesn’t make average dramas, and here he collaborates with Matt Damon to produce something that’s powerful, thought-provoking and emotional. Damon plays George Lonegan, a man who turns his back on his clairvoyant powers, although he quickly discovers that it’s not so easy to walk away from the Other Side!

The movie is split into three parts: the life of a French journalist who has a near death experience while on holiday, a twelve year old boy seeking answers after the death of his twin brother, and George’s story with the get rich quick manipulations of his brother. All three stories eventually intertwine for the movie’s final thought-provoking scenes.

If you’re looking for bombs, boobs and battles, this is the wrong movie for you (go see Tron 2 instead). This is a deep and meaningful film that asks questions about life, death and the afterlife. I give it a Five Kleenex rating (don’t be gross, I mean Hereafter tugs on the heartstrings and you might need to bring a tissue – honestly –people have such dirty minds).

Sure, this is a slow movie, but the build up toward the ending only makes the final scenes that much more evocative.

If you have ever lost anyone, or had questions about the universe or your place in it, then this is a must-see movie. It won’t answer any of those questions, but it might help you see the world in a very different light.

Score: 7.5/10 – Engrossing.

They can then recommend low cost remedies such as draught proofing, reflective radiator panels, boiler jackets and under-floor insulation and draw up a no obligation quote for installation.

Groundwork Sheffield’s Wendy Bussey said: “Such simple measures stop houses haemorrhaging heat, and right now none of us can afford for that to happen. People are making savings in all sorts of ways but ignoring the money seeping from their homes in heat leakage. It’s like throwing five pound notes on the fire” In the last 9 months, the Green Doctor team have assessed over 250 properties in Sheffield working with housing associations and private residents, saving £13000 pounds annually and reducing Sheffield CO2 emissions by over 90 tonnes.

by Timelord Timelord bags a magical 1147/1 five timer at Ascot and 164/1 double at Wincanton Master Minded (4/7) and Somersby (8/1) finish 1-2 in the Victor Chandler Chase Tatenen (22/1) and I’m A Legend (11/2) finish 1-2 VC Handicap Chase Realt Dubh (5/2) and Noble Prince (3/1) finish 1-2 in Irish Arkle Novices Chase I don’t usually blow my own trumpet too loudly as I have found over the years that winning sprees are often swiftly followed by a series of defeats but, by any measure, last week’s selections performed exceptionally well for followers of this column.

After a couple of weeks in the doldrums it was back to form with a bang as five out of seven went in at Ascot and two went in out of 6 at Wincanton. The prices were not too shabby either with the winners returning at SPs of: 22/1, 14/1, 10/1, 9/2, 3/1, 4/7 and 4/9 for something like a 48 point level stakes profit. Over the weekend there were three straight forecasts that went in: Master Minded/Somersby returning £5.93 to a £1 stake on the forecast (£6.50 on the tote Exacta); Tatenen/I’m A Legend returning a £143.16 forecast (Exacta £208.00) and Realt Dubh/Noble Prince returning a forecast of £10.35 (Exacta £11.80). Let’s hope for something of a repeat this week!

This coming Saturday has the Cheltenham Festival Trials and in addition there is pretty good fare from Doncaster, Uttoxeter and, from Ireland, Fairyhouse. I am only going to cover the two main meetings for Saturday this week but Friday also has a decent meeting from Gowran Park with the Galmoy Hurdle and the Thyestes Chase as the feature races.

Sunday’s fare is very mundane.

Starting at Cheltenham: In the 12.55 Nicky Henderson’s Grandouet should have too much class for the opposition although Paul Nicholls runs an interesting French recruit in Indian Daudaie and Steve Gollings’s Local Hero is no mug. At likely bigger prices Meetings Man, Mark Twain, Smad Place and Akula all have place claims of a sort.

In the ultra-competitive 1.30 Timeform Novices Handicap Chase there are many with strong chances. In something of a toss-up I shall shortlist Diamond Brook and Pearlysteps, two former quite classy hurdlers who look to have got their acts together over fences. Marginal preference is for Diamond Brook but it is a close call. I like the chances Misstree Dancer best of the rest but, in a tight race, Nicky Henderson’s Shakalakaboomboom also has a dangerously unexposed look about him.

My top rated in the 2.00 is Fine Parchment but to select him I am going to have to overlook his poor run at Chepstow last time. However this course, where he won by 9 lengths in December, is in his favour so I am going to give him a second chance. Dangers abound in this contest and Howard Johnson’s Drever Route gets the vote as the one to chase home the selection. At bigger prices Burren Legend, whose recent form reads more like a novel, could be a candidate for a place – as could Stewarts House, if he comes over from Ireland, and Donald Mc Cain’s Khatchaturian. Little Josh is another that likes this course.

In the Grade 2 Argento Chase at 2.30 Time for Rupert will be all the rage after his 8 length demolition of Chicago Grey in December. However, I reckon that there are three or four of these that can give him a really tough race at this trip.

MUSTAKOVS EIHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK ICE HOCKEY

Sheffield Steelers’ netminder Ervins Mustakovs this week won the Elite League’s “Player of the Week” title for the second time this season. Mustakovs played three games, posted two shut-outs, and made 82 saves from 86 shots over the course of the week.

On Saturday the Steelers faced off against the Belfast Giants, who currently sit below the Steelers in third place.

Any fans who had been “bored” by the team’s previous easy outings and 18-1 and 9-0 wins certainly got their money’s worth as both teams went full throttle for the win. Belfast scored the first and only goal of the first period, Brandon Benedict finding his way past Ervins Mustakovs in the Steelers net at 9:45 with a powerplay goal. The Steelers took the reins in the second period, Derek Campbell scoring their first goal of the night at 27:24, and Rob Globke gave the home side the lead at 31:27. Jeff Legue, returning to the line-up following last week’s suspension, marked his return with a goal at 39:01, and fans sneaking out early to the concessions stands were called back by another goal horn as defenceman Steve Munn scored his third goal for the team just six seconds later. The Giants opened the third, pulling a goal back at 40:51, which was soon cancelled out with a powerplay goal from Rod Sarich at 44:13. It looked as if the Giants might sneak back into the game, Craig Peacock added his second of the night at 45:40, and Colin Hemingway scored a powerplay goal at 58:33, but it was too little too late for the Giants, and the Steelers took the points.

There was little time to celebrate their victory over the Giants as an early start followed on Sunday for the road trip to Dundee. In front of a 950 crowd, including some intrepid Steelers fans who had made the trip, the Stars held off the inevitable for quite some time, the Steelers’ first goal coming at 13:56 from Player Coach Ben Simon. That was the only goal of the first period, and again in the second the Stars held firm for over half of the period, but eventually their defence crumbled and the Steelers cruised through. Rod Sarich scored at 31:19, and Captain Jonathan Phillips scored their third with a short-handed goal at 36:15. Neil Clark added a goal of his own at 37:10 after assisting on the first two Steelers goals, and Jeff Legue took his place as the club’s top goal scorer, netting his 30th goal of the season (and edging ahead of Clark (29 goals)) at 39:07. The third period was all over in a few minutes, Ashley Tait scored the Steelers’ sixth goal at 43:59 before Robert Dowd completed the scoring at 4:55. The rest of the game passed with no more goals, leaving the Steelers heading home with a 7-0 victory.

The Steelers will be supporting the troops with a Combined Armed Forces charity game on February 5th as the RAF Eastern Crusade take on the Army Air Corp Ice Hawks.

Doors open at 3pm for a 3:45pm face-off. The game will be followed by the Steelers v Panthers game at 7pm, and any ticket holder for the evening game will get free admission to the afternoon’s game. Anyone presenting military ID can purchase a ticket for both games for just £5, and there will be bucket collections taking place throughout both games.

All money collected will be split between Veteran’s Aid and The “Not Forgotten” Association, and a cheque presentation will be made during the evening’s game.

It will be very interesting to see if The Tother One can uphold the Hennessy form over Taranis and can add further weight to the claims of Diamond Harry for the Gold Cup. In the Grade 2 Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle at 3.05 improving Buck Mulligan is a sporting selection and can dent some tall reputations by lifting this prize.

A winner by eight lengths last time out at Wincanton where he recorded an excellent time on soft going he looks to me to have too many guns for these and is likely to offer a bit of value in the market.

The Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle at 3.35 also may offer some value in Hills of Aran. I keep going to the well for this one but last time out he ran on again at Kempton after “blowing up” going out on the second circuit. That outing should have put him spot-on for this and as my top rated animal by some way I am going to overlook the apparently poor performances of late. Although he is far from a certainty the prices on offer should reflect his form figures (he is currently 66/1)and give something to work with on an each way angle. David Pipe’s Grands Crus is likely to be all the rage but others with each way shouts against the favourite are: Kayf Aramis (33/1); Arcalis (20/1); Mobaasher (20/1); Restless Harry (10/1); and Fair Along (8/1). There are enough dangers in my opinion to warrant taking on Grands Crus.

Over at Doncaster the feature races are the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle and the Listed Skybet Handicap Chase.

The 2.45 Novices hurdle can go to multiple winner Ballabriggs with Bob’s Worth Kilcrea Kim and Blenheim Brook all vying for second.

In the Skybet chase at 3.20 I like the chances of Killyglen to see off previous winner Wogan, Fistral Beach and King Fontaine.

I’m honest! My first session using the new baits resulted in a cracking 4lb winter trout taken on the Giant Mealworms for the Pallatrax ‘Naturals’ range; I was after chub, but as no-one else caught, I can’t complain! I fished the River Dove using a ‘Stonze’ straight through to a size 12 hook to hit the only bite of the day in bitter conditions. A cold but fine afternoon in Suffolk was the offering as the Rovers lined up against Ipswich Town. For the Rovers, Matt Kilgallon came in for Sam Hird in the centre of defence otherwise it was the same team that began against the Wolves in the F.A. Cup on Tuesday. On the substitutes’ bench were recent signing Paul Keegan and loan signing Ryan Mason.

The first five minutes were spent sounding each other out but then O’Connor got to the left byline and crossed with the ball reaching Sharp to the right of goal. His shot from about 15 yards hit the far post and bounced away.

However, in the 7th minute SHARP didn’t miss when he rifled the ball in from a similar distance but more central. The home team tried to hit back straight away by winning a corner but this was cleared.

However they came again but Sullivan saved with his legs from Norris’ effort. Norris was then wide from 25yards.

The Rovers were having their share of the game in midfield but it was Wickham, for the home team who got the next strike on goal from the edge of the area but Sullivan, stationed on the six yard line saved well. Doncaster Rovers Football Club are delighted to announce that young Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason has returned to the Keepmoat Stadium on a youth-loan deal which will run until the end of the season; subject to clearance being granted by the Premier League.

The Rovers hit back straight away when a Coppinger cross was met with a diving header by SHARP to head into the bottom corner from close range. Back came Ipswich, with nothing coming from a corner but following a free kick a couple of minutes later Wickham had a header saved. But, in the 64th minute, an Ipswich attack was rounded off when EDWARDS, on the right, fired low and hard across thje keeper and into the far corner of the net.

The rovers tried hard to get back into the game but it was mostly the home team on the attack. A couple of corners came to nothing, Norris won the ball off Oster, took it on but fired wide from 20yards.

Then Martin put high and wide from a similar distance. performance from the Tractor Boys and a shaky showing from Rovers in the second half saw the home side emerge winners of the three points.

And, O’Driscoll’s reaction could be summarised in one word...

“Disbelief, I suppose,” O’Driscoll told RoversPlayer.

“We looked like we were in total control at 1-0 up, where it could have been two or three. Then, two or three minutes into the restart, we concede a goal. We made one or two poor decisions and on my watch after that, we didn’t relieve any pressure until about eight minutes into the second half.”

A Ched Evans goal and an encouraging battling display could not prevent United from slipping to defeat against Norwich.

Andrew Crofts scored two similar goals for Norwich but United players argued that Steve Simonsen was impeded on both as Micky Adams continues to look for his first win as Blades boss.

Evans, a former Canaries loanee, netted his eighth of the season and for large parts the Blades pushed the visitors onto the back foot.

Bent, beginning his second spell at the club, made the starting line-up, as did Cresswell as manager Adams named an attacking line-up for the visit of Norwich. Mattock and Lowry remained in the back four to make their home debuts, but Ertl and Williamson dropped to the bench.

United’s formation saw an unchanged back four, whilst further forward Montgomery and Quinn patrolled the central midfield area with, from right to left, Ward, Evans, Bent and Cresswell attempting to provide the attacking spark.

Lowry’s first Lane action was to block from Jackson after Holt had won the ball in the air in the first 30 seconds, but United were quickly on the attack and Evans could not direct the ball towards goal from Ward’s cross.

The Norwich goalkeeper denied Evans once again on 22 minutes, Ruddy deflecting the ball over the crossbar with his feet after the Welsh striker had peeled away to collect a Ward free-kick. The signs, however, were encouraging and Evans again went close, on 34 minutes, curling a free-kick just wide after Quinn was upended.

Cresswell headed over a Ward corner as the home side’s pressure continued, whilst from Quinn’s cross, Bent and Lowry went for the same ball at the back post.

The last chance of the half, however, fell to the visitors.

Lowry was booked for a foul on Chris Martin, who dusted himself down before curling the resulting free-kick against the top of Simonsen’s crossbar.

The Sheffield United back line is starting to resemble the cast of Annie.

New boss Micky Adams has been quick to bolster his defensive options, with Aston Villa centre half Shane Lowry and West Brom’s Joe Mattock brought in as cover.

The problem however has been that the two new loan signings are less cover than first team necessities due to our horrific injury problems and failure to equip our squad with permanent defensive signings.

Our current back line consists of Mattock (20), Lowry (21), Kyle Bartley (19) and Elian Parrino (22) all of which are on loan and in the relatively early stages of their football development.

A battling stalemate against Coventry City last week saw the Blades record their first clean sheet since before Christmas and was a promising start for the young quartet.

Inconsistency, however, will no doubt be a problem.

The blooding of youngsters is fantastic when done alongside hardened professionals who know the game inside out and can help the development of their younger team mates.

This is something that Matt Kilgallon benefited from during his time at Bramall Lane playing alongside Chris Morgan.

Unfortunately these young guys are going to have to go it alone.

In Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Norwich City there were clear signs of inexperience that saw the Blades concede two sloppy goals from corners, when a strong head was needed to clear the danger.

We were definitely unlucky with the refereeing decisions that led to the goals but we must not dwell, because if we start to feel sorry for ourselves then we will be relegated.

Our young team needs to galvanise and strengthen under the tutelage of Micky Adams and believe in their ability to get out of the sticky situation we are in.

We are asking boys to do men’s jobs, let’s just hope they’re up to it.

Sheffield Wednesday slipped to defeat against Leyton Orient on Saturday as second half goals from Ben Chorley, Harry Kane, Alex Revell and Paul-Jose Mpoku handed the hosts victory.

The Owls edged the first half but failed to make the advantage count, leaving Orient to do just that in the second period and claim the points.

Alan Irvine handed an immediate start to new striker Gary Madine, while Lewis Buxton returned at right back having recovered from a hamstring strain.

But both players made it only to half time before being withdrawn through injury on a miserable afternoon in the capital for Wednesday.

Play was equal through the early exchanges at the Matchroom Stadium, with neither defence under real pressure as possession was shared largely in the engine room.

At the other end, though, Wednesday continued to ask most of the questions and Gary Teale came close on the half-hour mark, firing low and hard but Jones’ late intervention prevented the opener.

Teale caused the hosts’ problems down the left, be it getting to the byline or cutting inside and Orient could count themselves fortunate to go into the break still on level terms. But the second half was a different story.

The Owls emerged without both Buxton and Madine, with Mark Beevers and Neil Mellor entering the action.

Orient started the second period at a brisker pace and Dean Cox saw a clever chip spooned away by Weaver minutes after the resumption.

And in the 50th minute, Russell Slade’s side went into the lead from the penalty spot. Teale was adjudged to have handled Revell’s headed

knockback and Chorley did the honours from 12 yards.

The goal gave Orient a huge boost and they almost doubled their lead when Weaver saved well from Revell.

But the Owls’ keeper could do little when the Londoners did go 2-0 up on 57 minutes.

Revell swung a dangerous free kick right into the heart of the box and Kane was on hand to tap home from five yards on his first senior start.

Kane then forced a fine save from Weaver as Orient threatened to put the game out of reach and they did exactly that 11 minutes from time when Revell headed Daniels’ free kick into the bottom corner.

And still there was time for substitute Mpoku to bag a fortunate fourth when his set piece from 25 yards bounced straight past Weaver to round off what proved a comfortable victory for Orient.

Sheffield Wednesday would like to inform supporters that there is only limited seating remaining for the South Stand ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie.

While central areas of the stand are almost at capacity for the Owls’ fourth round game against Hereford United, there is still availability in the wing areas.

However, due to the number of current sales in the South Stand we can confirm that there will be no pay on the turnstile in this area, so we urge supporters wishing to be seated in this stand to buy early.

Should the capacity be reached prior to 5pm on Friday 28 January when sales are set to end for this stand, we will withdraw this area from sale before this time.

We currently have over 5,700 seats available in the lower Kop and therefore have have no plans to open further areas of the ground at this time.

Wadsley Bridge WMC Celebrating 90 Years

Happy Birthday Wadsley Bridge !

On 27th January 1921, (almost 90 years to the day of our publishing,) the members of Wadsley Bridge Club and Institute Ltd. passed a resolution sanctioning the purchase of the freehold of The Grange, set in four acres of land, from Edwin Robinson, at the same time approving the borrowing from William Stones Ltd. of a mortgage for £4,000.

And so, with an initial membership of 200 or thereabouts, (a figure that was later to swell to almost 4000!), Wadsley Bridge WMC was born.

Joseph Smedley, the club’s oldest member, joined shortly after his 18th birthday in January 1934.

The traditional activities still take place – there is a snooker team, football team and darts team competing in the local leagues, and a full complement of players in the CIU’s 8-9-10 league – the darts, dominoes, crib, whist and snooker evening.

In addition however, the club hosts a number of other activities, and during the day there are classes ranging from Slimming World, Tai Chi, Disco Keep Fit and Ballroom Dancing. Added to these, the superb concert room continues to provide the best in live entertainment across the weekend.

Plans are well under way for the club’s 90th Birthday celebrations.

Rumours are rife that, during the birthday party, beer will be reduced by up to 90p per pint in recognition of the milestone. Looking ahead as always, the Committee are already considering suitable ways in which to mark the Centenary!
