ROTHERHAM CAMRA ON THE HUNT TO FIND YORKSHIREʼS BEER OF THE YEAR Rotherham’s branch of the Campaign for Real Ale is hoping to discover the best beer in Yorkshire, after securing the rights to host the official regional beer championships, which will take place during this year’s Real Ale and Music Festival.

This year’s festival takes place at Magna during 2-5th March and will be themed around the white rose… meaning that almost every beer will be specially selected from counties featuring a white rose in their crest!

The winning beer

will be judged by a panel of beer experts, and go on to compete in the national finals, where it could be crowned the Champion Beer of Britain for 2011.

The Rotherham branch of CAMRA, which was created as a result of the popularity of the town’s real ale festival currently has a membership of over 500 across the borough, and Chairman Jim Crowe believes that one of the reasons the festival has proved to be so popular is the wide variety of brews available: “It is a terrific honour for Rotherham to

host the Yorkshire beer championship and means that the festival is likely to attract some of the best brewers from all four corners of the region.

“Some people say that there is a beer out there to suit anyne’s palette, and with over 250 beers available this year, festival visitors will have a great chance to discover the huge variety of Real Ales for themselves.

For some it’s about experiencing new and unusual brews, while others come along to see if they agree with the judging panel.

Festival is a fantastic platform for beers in Yorkshire and already it is shaping up to being a memorable week, with some of the region’s best known breweries going head-to-head with smaller lesser-known micro-breweries.”

COPLEYʼS COLUMN The New Year is scarcely a week ago and already we have lost two British iconic figures.

I refer to Gerry Rafferty and Gary Mason.

Gerry Rafferty passed away on January 4th at home in Upton, Dorset. He had been admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital last November but after his release home he died of liver failure as a direct consequence of his lifelong battle with alcoholism.

After early jobs working in a butcher’s shop and as a civil service clerk, he earned money busking in the London Underground before joining the band Fifth Column with Joe Egan, later of Stealers Wheel.

In 1969, he became the third member of an existing duo the Humblebums together with Billy Connolly and Tam Harvey, who left shortly afterwards, leaving Rafferty and Connolly to record two acclaimed albums for Transatlantic Records. They split in 1971 with Connolly achieving much solo success as a comedian, and Rafferty and Joe Egan formed Stealers Wheel, having a massive hit with ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’, before splitting up in 1975. Legal issues over this split prohibited Rafferty from releasing any new material for three years, but after resolution of issues in 1978,

he recorded solo album, City to City, which included the much acclaimed Baker Street, which charted at three in the UK and two in America. The album sold over 5.5 million copies. He had married in 1970 to Carla Ventilla and divorced in 1990. His later years were spent fighting alcoholism and depression, before finally succumbing last week. Baker Street, an absolute classic, which included a fabulous saxophone solo, will do much to keep his memory alive.

Gary Mason was perhaps the most underrated heavyweight this country has had for many a year. Fighting under the shadow of Frank Bruno, and later Lennox Lewis, his record was excellent, winning all but one of his thirty eight fights, thirty four by knockout, losing his one fight against World Champion, Lennox Lewis. Gary fought some really tough opponents and had a short career playing rugby league for London Crusaders, scoring a try on his debut. He made many television appearances, including a celebrity show of Gladiators, on the panel of You Bet, a guest appearance in Gamesmaster in 1992 and his home was featured in Through The Keyhole, when the panel mistakenly thought that the house belonged to Lennox Lewis . I was

introduced to Gary at a funeral in London, and found him to be a genuine unassuming man.

On the morning of January 6th Gary was out cycling in South London when he was in collision with a van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

We have lost a great sportsman and ambassador for boxing, who did much charitable work and would always turn out when asked. His premature death at forty eight years of age saddens me greatly.

I read with great interest that official figures predict that one in six people will live to be one hundred years old with many reaching one hundred and ten due to improved diets, living conditions and medical technology. I on many occasions stated that I want to live forever but am not getting too excited as five out of six people will not make it. As a lifetime smoker, drinker and philanderer, I shall be amazed to clock up the expected three score years and ten. At least I will not outlive my money.

Congratulations to the England cricket team for putting the whinging Australians in their place and bringing the Ashes back where they belong and also to Sheffield Wednesday for a great win in the FA Cup against Bristol City, which earned them a favourable draw in round four. Wednesday, thanks to Milan Mandaric have now turned the corner.

ALBERT PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS SNODGRASS THE 2011 PDC Premier League Darts will be held on 15 consecutive Thursday nights from February-May, taking in the UK’s largest arenas for the sport’s most popular event.

The PDC darts roadshow hits Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena on the 14th April 2011.

Tickets are now on sale priced £30, £20 (subject to booking fee).

Eight stars of the PDC will compete in Premier League Darts, facing each other twice over the course of 14 league nights before the top four players compete in the play-offs at the Wembley Arena.

GARY ANDERSON and Mark Webster will make their debuts in Premier League Darts in 2011 after being confirmed amongst the eight-player field for the tournament.

Anderson’s rise to fourth in the PDC Order of Merit has seen him earn an automatic place in the Premier League Darts, which features the top four from the PDC Order of Merit plus four Wildcards in 2011.

World number one Phil Taylor, the reigning Premier League Darts champion, is joined by new Ladbrokes.com World Darts Champion Adrian Lewis and Bodog.com World Grand Prix winner James Wade and Anderson as the automatic selections.

Five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, 2010 World Championship runner-up Simon Whitlock, 2007 Premier League Darts finalist Terry Jenkins and two-time PDC World Championship semi-finalist Webster are the four Wildcards.

Webster, who won the 2008 Lakeside Championship before joining the PDC, is rewarded for a fine run of form recently, which saw him lead Wales to the Cash Converters World Cup of Darts final before he knocked out Taylor in reaching the World Championship semi-finals at Alexandra Palace.

The league stage of Premier League Darts - which is screened live in its entirety by Sky Sports - will see the eight players face each other twice before the top

four players progress to play in the Play-Offs at the Wembley Arena on Thursday May 19.

The 2010 event saw reigning champion James Wade defeated in an historic final by Phil Taylor, who became the first player in history to hit two nine-dart finishes in the same match as he claimed a fifth Premier League Darts title.

“Premier League Darts is one of British sport’s biggest success stories since we introduced the tournament in 2005 and this year’s event saw the event move to a new level” PDC Chairman Barry Hearn “Not only did we pack arenas around the UK for three months but the players produced an incredible standard of darts – most notably with Raymond van Barneveld’s nine-dart finish in Aberdeen which was followed by the incredible final which featured two nine-darters from Phil Taylor.

WHEREʼS THE VALUE? Anybody lucky enough (or indeed rich enough!) to obtain tickets for Take That’s 2011 UK Tour will have noticed the hole in their pocket as a result of having to pay over £100 (plus booking fees) simply for the privilege of going to see them.

Even X Factor tickets for the Motorpoint Arena will set you back upwards of £30.00 – and let’s be honest – other than a typical maximum two hour show, and perhaps a support band, you don’t get a lot for your money! Expensive food, expensive drinks, tacky souvenirs at inflated prices – the whole experience is, putting it mildly, not the best you would expect as paying customers!

Contrast this with a typical Saturday night, watching live entertainment at your local club. Generally the acts on the circuit are of a very high standard – often with live music, excellent vocals, and great stage shows. If you pay anything at all to get in, the cost will be modest. Drinks are reasonably priced, seating and surroundings are usually a lot more comfortable, and a great night out can be had for less than a tenner a head!

Many of us who aren’t members of CAMRA would like to see real ale as a regular feature in the paper, as we have some great brews in our area – Bradfield, Thornbridge, Abbeydale and Kelham island all spring to mind! Well we’re into the time of the year when we look back and take stock.

In weeks to come we’ll have the Brits and the Oscars honouring the great and the good in the past twelve months. We’ll also hear a lot about how much we had of this and that in 2010, and no doubt see plenty of statistics for all sorts of things.

One series of results that has interested me already has to be the set of figures from Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport on the cargo they’ve handled. During the year they saw off 13 parrots, 3 tortoises, 2 lemurs and a guinea pig to destinations around the world, and where did they all go to?

Apparently, it’s Paphos that was the most popular destination for live animal cargo. We’ve also welcomed 73 dogs, 18 cats and rabbits through the airways here in South Yorkshire.

This being the case, I asked on the Breakfast Show last week if you have a pet that travels well. I know I myself had a cat that was in some distress having to travel over on a plane some years ago, but nowadays with the onset of special animal passports more of us seem to be taking our pets overseas.

Undoubtedly, the best story came from Margaret from Ecclesfield who said that she once took her tortoise on a camping trip. She can’t remember whether it was him or her elderly mother though who behaved worst.

The band refers to their music as ‘visceral nightmare pop’, the NME call it a ‘startlingly accomplished’ sound, and everyone else calls it dark and brooding. You can see where this going, with critics piling on the Portishead and Bjork comparisons. With a name taken from a Danish fairytale chronicling the adventures of Esben fleeing and stealing from witches in the night, appeasing kings and evil knights, ‘nightmare pop’ sounds like a pretty apt description.

Esben and the Witch are romantic, melancholic, and genre-spanning, with droning guitars and triphop electronics used to maximum effect but, above all, they know how to tell a story. Davies delivers the lyrics beautifully, weaving tales of epic battles and lost lands in a way which is less Portishead and more Lord of the Rings.

This is a band that wears its influences on its sleeve and comparisons can easily be made to a number of ‘gloomy’ acts but, in fact, theirs is a familiar sound with an unfamiliar twist. Such is the confidence of the music industry in this emerging talent that US indie label giant Matador made the band the first UK act they have signed in six years.

Eleven for 2011 – Part Two: Gaming You would think that the gaming industry would be brimming with talent and busting with wonderful new ideas, but in reality, it’s actually in a bit of a rut.

Originality is all but dead in a billion dollar market where substandard movie spinoffs make the top of the bestsellers list and any even remotely successful title sees a slew of increasingly shoddy sequels (coughs, Tomb Raider). It’s all about cash, and in this big money game of Playstation poker, profit trumps creativity every time! With developers not willing to release anything that doesn’t have a number after its title, pickings for original gaming experiences are slim indeed. That said, if you’re not looking for originality, you’ve got a veritable smorgasbord of sequels this year: Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2, Elder Scrolls V, Crysis 2, GTA 5, Mass Effect 3, to name but a few. They might not be original, but you’re pretty much guaranteed a quality gaming experience. So, finding eleven original, high quality games for 2011 was tough, but here are some of the best that should have you drooling over your joypads in anticipation!

The 11 Best Original Games of 2011 11. PC - The Secret World This massively multiplayer dark horror adventure features secret cults, otherworldly monsters and ancient mysteries, and looks to be shaping up to be one of the online hits of the year.

10. 360 / PS3 - Brink Like Team Fortress, this team based first person shooter features classes to suit your playstyle and upgrades to customise your avatar!

9. XBOX / PS3 - R.A.G.E. Developed by the grandfather of the genre, ID, and armed with a brand new engine, this post-apocalyptic first person shooter has visuals designed to make your eyes bleed! 8 PS3 Bullet Storm Sci-fi first person shooter with huge weapons, enormous bosses, and some truly visceral combat. This is an 18 game with adult themes! Sure, the in game dialogue might be awful, but with action this hot, who cares?

7 360 / PS3 - Alice: Madness Returns It’s about time we had a decent Alice in Wonderland adventure, and this game looks to be shaping up nicely. Sure, it may look bright and colourful, but there’s a sinister vein running throughout the levels that makes this dark stuff indeed.

6. 360 / PS3 - Batman Arkham City So, it’s a sequel – of sorts, but this updated Batman game features enough new game play and a much larger world to warrant a well-deserved slot in this list. It also features multiplayer and a slew of new gadgets, weapons, and enemies.

5. PS3 - The Last Guardian This action-adventure puzzler from the team who brought you Ico is jam packed with emotive gameplay, fiendish puzzles, and set pieces. If you liked Ico, this is a must.

4. PS3 - Agent Developers, Rockstar, have some meaty credentials and in this original title you get to play an assassin in the shadowy world of the 1970s where adult themes and cracking gameplay are the orders of the day.

3. Wii - The Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword Get your boomerangs ready! Link is back in a brand new adventure. There’s not much else to say as we all know exactly what to expect from the sword-wielding hero in green. This is the stuff of legends.

2. PC - Diablo 3 Developers, Blizzard, don’t do anything even remotely new or innovative, but what they do has a layer of polish which could cause blindness on a sunny day. Diablo 3 is shaping up to be the dungeon questing fantasy multiplayer adventure of the year.

1. PC - Star Wars: The Old Republic It’s Star Wars, it’s got Jedi and it’s a multiplayer game - what more can anyone want? By the team that brought us Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age - this will be one to watch on its release this year.

Sheffield City Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Chair of Communities, attended the first Sheffield 50+ Elders’ Congress meeting of 2011 on 6 January.

The meeting, held in the Council Chambers is a monthly event where the Elders’ Congress ask key questions on behalf of older people in Sheffield.

Cllr Mohammed was invited to talk about the Council’s policy and progress on gritting our streets during the recent severe weather.

The cold snap before Christmas was the worst for many years. As many as 400 council staff volunteered to move to snow activities from their usual duties setting in motion a huge operation which Cllr Mohammed explained was preceded by the setting in place of strategies for dealing with

such conditions.

Cllr Mohammed explained the two priority areas of gritting to make sure the city keeps moving as normally as possible. This was very stretched in the recent fall because of the speed and depth of the coverage.

Snow Wardens are a new concept where volunteers are given training in health and safety, shovels, a ton of salt and reflective vests to do the job. They can come back for more salt when they have used it and on average the volunteer Snow Wardens spread 2.5 tons of grit each. 100 more volunteers have come forward but the Council is looking for an even spread of wardens across the city and would like more volunteers to come forward. Record numbers of people needed the charity’s help to care for their sick and injured pets as more pet owners suffering economic hardship became eligible for PDSA’s vet services. Nearly 400,000 pets were treated in 2010. This represents a staggering 50 per cent rise over the last five years. In turn, the cost of delivering this vital service topped £50 million this year.

Andrew continues: “The festive period is always a difficult time of year for charity shops, as people are busy getting ready for Christmas. But this year has been one of our worst, and with more snow forecast, it’s likely to get worse so we’re urging people to remember their local charity shop after Christmas. We would welcome donations of clothes or unwanted presents which can be brought in anytime or if you have a larger amount, please give us a call and we’ll try and arrange a collection”.

Artic freeze causes drop in donations Arctic weather conditions are preventing people donating items to charity shops – which could mean empty rails in the New Year, a leading charity warned today.

Veterinary charity PDSA, which operates over 170 high street stores, relies on second-hand clothes, books, CDs and DVDs to sell to raise funds to run its free vet service across the UK. Stock levels have plummeted to an all-time low, meaning that December’s sales figures are heading for a 20 per cent drop compared to last year. I am close to murder.....I’ve not had chance to get on any venue for over a month! Work, weather and anything else you can think of has prevented me wetting a line and I’ve had enough! Hopefully you have had more success than me?

I have had some good news however; I’ve signed to Devon based manufacturer ‘Pallatrax’ for the forthcoming season. Pallatrax are the innovators who bought the ‘Stonze’ system to the market, and they will be supplying my bait and tackle for 2011. Why Pallatrax? Well, I was lucky enough to be asked after some of my work appeared on another website and was spotted

The lake record carp stands at somewhere around 34 ½ lbs and will go again this season if the growth rate of these stunning fish has continued as expected. With depths to more than 50 feet, the water offers a huge challenge which I hope to conquer........fat chance!

My column in weekly magazine “Carp-Talk” is suffering too; the continuous cold weather means very few venues are fishable, the ice still causing mayhem. Because of this, much debate this week on several forums, including North West Carp (www.northwestcarp.co.uk) about the merits of breaking the thicker ice to allow dissolved oxygen into the water. The latest guidance from the Angling Trust does not recommend aggressive actions to clear the ice as it transmits vast amounts of traumatic shock onto the stock which can lead to fish distress or deaths. Many North West venues are sadly starting to suffer fish loss, some have even lost all of their fish which is tragic (and expensive) for the clubs involved.

Recommendations include preventative measures such as de-silting waters using products such as ‘Siltex’, stock removal to prevent overcrowding and the use of aerators to force oxygen into the water. With this in mind, I’m extremely worried to hear of an angler walking out onto a venue to fish through a hole in the ice in the middle of the lake!!! Dangerous isn’t the word....stupid is! KEMPTON STAGES THE POSTPONED KING GEORGE CHASE - CAN KAUTO STAR AGAIN? HORSE RACING

This week I am concentrating on the meetings at Kempton and Warwick which have decent cards and some televised races.

In a bumper nine race card on Saturday Kempton Park stages the postponed King George VIth Chase where Kauto Star chases a record fifth win in the race and who is to say he won’t succeed at his favourite track? Needless to say, because he is trained by Paul Nicholls, he is likely to start at pretty short odds. This track plays to Kauto Star’s strengths however and he is much the most likely winner - but what about the opposition?

If you do not want to take the skinny odds on offer about the favourite the step up to this level and distance might bring some further improvement in Nicky Henderson’s Riverside Theatre, who won last time out, at more reasonable odds. Long Run is a C&D Grade1 novice chase winner and also represents Nicky Henderson. Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run is a multiple Grade 1 chase winner and is also likely to pose a significant threat to favourite providing he can get his jumping act together.

Others with an each way shout are: Sizing Europe, who has 4 lengths to find with the favourite on their running in the JN Wine Chase at Down Royal before Christmas, and Planet of Sound, also a Grade 1 chase winner on a right handed track.

All in all it looks likely to be another victory for Kauto but there are some decent animals in opposition and there could be an upset if things do not go his way. He is an eleven year old now and they can all be beaten if things go wrong.

There must be value elsewhere for a place amongst the others who have scored at this level so the advice is either no bet or one of the five

above as an each way shot. If pressed I think I would just favour Sizing Europe who is a best priced 20/1 at present.

Also on the card is the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle where Khyber Kim has an excellent chance of turning over the current Champion Hurdler, Binocular.

Channel 4 is showing seven races, four from Kempton and three from Warwick: In the first from Kempton at 1.55 I like the chances of the Ursis who won last time out and could go in again here. Drybrook Bedouin may give him most to do.

In the 2.10 from Warwick I reckon that Alan King’s Call Me A Legend may provide the answer with Kilkenny All Star and Rimini proving best of the rest.

The 2.25 from Kempton should go to Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Khyber Kim providing first time out fitness is not an issue.

In the Warwick 2.45 Mossley should supplement recent winnings with Made In Time and Moon Indigo chasing him home.

The King George is run at 3.00 and I have previewed that race above.

In the 3.20 from Warwick I like the chances of Venetia Williams’ Officier De Reserve who ran well in the Hennessy and last time out at Cheltenham. This Grade 3 Handicap over a marathon 3 miles and five furlongs should play to his strengths and, off his light weight, he can go in here at a reasonable price. Cannington Brook and last time out winner Mr Big look to pose the biggest threats to his chances.

Finally on TV Brian Ellison’s Palomar can land the 3.35 from Kempton but readers will know from previous columns that I have a lot of respect for Hills of Aran providing that he is (at last) fit enough to run well.

Sheffield Steelers fans were delighted yesterday when it was revealed that the team’s captain, Jonathan Phillips, will be back on the ice for tomorrow’s massive game against the Cardiff Devils. The Devils are new owner Paul Ragan’s other EIHL team, and Ragan admitted at a fan forum last week that he will be “firmly on the fence” at the Arena on Wednesday night as his two teams face off against each other for the first time since the Steelers’ change in ownership over Christmas.

Phillips has been out since suffering a terrible knee injury at the start of the season which required surgery on his knee ligaments, and has been itching to get back onto the ice.

“I definitely want to play on Wednesday against Cardiff,” Phillips, who hails from Wales, told the Steelers website, “The leg feels fine, I skated last week and all seems good. I didn’t get involved with the physical stuff...I guess it’s just getting confidence that the knee is all OK. So my plan is to go hard on Tuesday and also in morning skate on Wednesday. It’s a massive game and I want to play in it.”

Despite missing players including Jonathan Phillips and Steve Munn, who is still out with concussion, the Steelers ran riot over the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday, leaving the Murrayfield rink with a 9-0 victory giving them three wins out of three visits to Edinburgh this season. The Capitals had ex-Steeler Scott Neil on the bench following coach Brad Gratton quitting the club, along with a number of players including Alex Kim, David Lomas, Daniel Madsen, Chris St Jacques, and most recently Adam Taylor and Jacques Perreault.

However the under-strength team looked like they were to take an early lead as ex-Steeler Jeff Hutchins got in on net and forced Mustakovs in the Steelers net to make a save.

Jason Hewitt scored his first of the night at 53:25, and Derek Campbell added his second at 55:07. Neil Clark added the final nail in the Capitals’ coffin, scoring the ninth goal short-handed at 15:53.

The Steelers next home game is on Wednesday January 12th, vs the Cardiff Devils.

Will Atkinson’s loan extension has fallen through following a last minute change of heart by the player.

Atkinson had been due to stay with the Millers until the end of the season but he has now opted to join Rochdale.

A last minute goal from Aston Villa consigned United to a bigger margin of defeat than they deserved, says Micky Adams who could only muster six substitutes after Mark Yeates disclocated a shoulder in training.

The trickle of youthful potential coming into Bramall Lane over the next few days will not affect Micky Adams’ ability to wheel and deal in the transfer market.

Chelsea’s Danny Philliskirk came in on loan today and other fledglings will soon be joining him, but the United boss has been left clear to concentrate on the task of immediately strengthening the current first-team picture: “It is not panic stations by any means at this stage because I am still assessing the lads here and weighing up potential targets.

“My phone hasn’t stopped since I came here with players and agents ringing me about coming here, but I have to be careful because very often that way you end up being offered other people’s problems and I have enough of my own!

“There will be three more young players coming into the club shortly but I stress that, like Danny Philliskirk who came in today, they are development squad players who were lined up to come in before I was appointed.

“They are clearly part of the longer term strategy of the club and not the immediate future, and for that I am looking for a bit more strength and experience to go straight into the side.”

What is it about players coming back to haunt their former clubs?

Sheffield United’s FA Cup tie against Aston Villa had seemed fairly innocuous at first, with nothing about it to excite the masses too much.

But at the last minute the Midlands outfit secured the services of former Blades full back Kyle Walker who would go straight in to the squad to face his former club.

And lo and behold, just nine minutes into his loan debut the Sheffield born defender got the better of United’s rearguard to put the Villains 1-0 up.

Fair play to the lad, he didn’t repeat the histrionics that we saw a week earlier from another Sheffielder, but then by all accounts he had promised his mum that he wouldn’t celebrate.

Later in the game the tables would turn, with Jamie Ward converting a penalty against the club with which he began his career.

But this sort of thing seems to happen all the time. Obviously we had Doncaster’s in form striker Billy Sharp bag two against us last week, but looking back over the years it is almost a foregone conclusion that when the Blades come against a former employee we will come off worst.

Former Lane favourite Rob Hulse is just one former employee who has put us to the sword in recent seasons and it would be a fair bet that when the Blades travel down to Loftus Road in April he won’t be a million miles away from the score-sheet.

It almost wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise if his QPR team-mate Paddy Kenny doesn’t manage to hit the back of the net as well.

Maybe it is just coincidence and something observers only see because they’re looking for it, but after the week the Blades have had, you can be pardoned for thinking something’s against us.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine was delighted to steer the Owls into round four of the FA Cup for the first time in ten years.

Wednesday ran out convincing 3-0 winners at Ashton Gate against Bristol City to book their place in round four and Irvine said: “I’m delighted to go into the next round. I’m told that this is the first time we’ve been in round four for ten years and I was surprised by that because this is far too big a club for a statistic like that.

“But we are in round four and after two away games it would be nice to get a home game at Hillsborough.”

Irvine was pleased with his side’s impressive second half display after City bossed the opening period.

Goals from Gary Teale, Neil Mellor and Clinton Morrison sealed the victory as the Owls ran riot after the break.

Irvine said: “Bristol City were the better side in the first half and I told the players at half time to relax and be patient.

We were much better in the second half and good value for the win.

“We took the goals really well and I was pleased with that performance.”

The manager was particularly pleased with the performances of debutants Reda Johnson and Michael Morrison, who were both drafted into the side following midweek moves to Hillsborough.

Irvine added: “The new lads did really well. Reda won everything in the air and I think he can head the ball further than I can kick it!

“Michael was very composed and linked up really well with Chris Sedgwick down the right hand side.”

Sheffield Wednesday have drawn Wycombe Wanderers or Hereford United at home in round four of the FA Cup. Wycombe and Hereford play their third round tie at Adams Park on Tuesday night, with the Hillsborough clash awaiting the winners.

The Football Association Challenge Cup. First played in season 1871 – 1872 and renowned the world over for being the finest ever knockout competition.

And we are in round four for the first time in a decade with a favourable home tie. This is without doubt a tremendous opportunity to launch a cup assault. Yes we need to achieve promotion this season but for once lets indulge if possible in a good old fashioned ‘cup run’. This competition is not just about Man Utd / Arsenal / Chelsea / Liverpool swanning about in front of the corporate droves at Wembley in May. Nor is it just about the plucky non leaguers who get to rounds one and two to the embarrassment of a lower league side. It is also about taking your mind off whatever pressures you may be facing in the league and simply going out and playing unashamed attacking football – cup style! It pains me to see so many empty seats up and down the country when you watch the highlights show. Whatever we need to do to preserve this magnificent tournament we simply must; whether that be a blanket £5 admission charge across the country or a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy style stipulation that 7 of your starting 11 must be regulars.

There was no doubting the joy of the Leyton Orient and Notts County fans this weekend as they toppled Norwich and Sunderland respectively. Aston Villa, who at times in recent years have provided subsidised coaches to encourage greater travelling numbers managed to amass nearly 6k supporters at the lane this weekend as they pursued their only chance of glory this year (Nice job by the way Villains!!).

Hereford or Wycombe won’t be the most glamorous opposition ever to play at Hillsborough, but let’s give their fans the away day they deserve by showing them Hillsborough in all it’s glory with a good crowd and a great atmosphere…you never know you might need the ticket stub for a Wembley trip!! On a separate note at when are the FA going to draw the line when it comes to taking disciplinary action? I say this with particular reference to Ryan Babel this week. After Howard Webb ruined what should easily have been the tie of the round at Old Trafford Liverpool’s Ryan Babel had the crack on the internet by posting a picture of Webb in a Man Utd shirt.

“I’m sure the fans have missed their football over the Christmas period so hopefully we’ll put in a performance similar to our last home game against Bristol Rovers and the result will take care of itself.”
