ELBOW ANNOUNCE SHEFFIELD ARENA DATE
Angler’s Corner
MOTORPOINT ARENA NEWS - PAGE 4
ʻSHEFFIELD FRINGEʼ SECOND ONLY TO EDINBURGH FOR INDUSTRY CLOUT Sheffield’s position as one of the best springboards in the country for new comedy talent is set to go up a gear next month. Lesser known artists performing at the ‘fringe’ part of the Grin Up North Sheffield Comedy Festival are that keen to make an impression on audiences they are increasingly writing completely new shows solely for their appearance in the city. Keith Carter, who performs at The Lescar on Friday, October 15, has written ‘Sheffield Of Dreams’ specifically for the festival. Al Pitcher, who appears at the same venue on Friday and Saturday, October 8 and 9, will be pounding the streets of Sheffield
with his digital camera immediately prior to his show looking for inspiration to include in a show specifically geared for Sheffield. Sheffield is now seen as only second to Edinburgh in terms of size and clout within the industry – it even advertises on the London Underground. It has successfully attracted four out of the five overall winners from this year’s Edinburgh Comedy Festival to perform in the city next month and is a sign of just how far the event has come in six years. The winners performing in Sheffield are Russell Kane, Josie Long, Sarah Milican and Greg Davies. Other highlights at the ‘Sheffield Fringe’ include Zoe Lyons at
The Lescar on Friday, October 1, and John Scott at the same venue on Saturday, October 16. The sixth year of Grin Up North Sheffield Comedy Festival, which runs from October 1 to 31, boasts even more gigs than last year with tickets for all shows selling faster than ever before. Organisers Scott Barton and Toby Foster are confident of another bumper year, despite the gloomy economic forecasts. Scott Barton said: “Tickets for every single show are selling well and we’re looking forward to another fabulous month. “We’re set to have another multi-million pound impact on everything from restaurants to hotel
spaces in the city for a full month, as well as massive publicity both regionally and nationally. “We’ve worked flat out over the past five years to build the festival into one of the best in the country and it’s really paying off for the city.” The event is once again working closely with Travel South Yorkshire to help encourage festival goers to use public transport. Highlights of October’s festival include:Al Murray, Sean Lock, Sarah Millican, Russell Kane, Dara O’Briain, Stewart Lee, Jimmy Carr, Ross Noble, Rich Hal, Rhod Gilbert, John Scott, Josie Long, Christian Reilly, Mitch Benn, Ardal O’Hanlon , Toby Foster, Tommy Tiernan, Stewart Francis, Zoe Lyons,
