IT PAYS TO BE A FOOD LOVER

Households across Yorkshire and the Humber are being invited to become food lovers in an effort to save money, make the most of their food and help the environment – in one very tasty challenge.

‘Love Food Hate Waste’ is searching for four households from Yorkshire and the Humber to take part in the ‘Food Lover’ challenge’ from 4 October to 28 November.

It all begins with the household keeping a food-waste diary for a week to see how much is going in their bin.

They’ll then be treated to a ‘Food Lover’ makeover including; Love Food Hate Waste cookery lessons with one of the region’s top chefs A personalised food surgery with tailored ideas on how to cut down on food waste A ‘Food Waste

Reducer’ goody pack to help you store your food safer for longer There will be help on hand to successful applicants from the Love Food Hate Waste team and local councils, who are supporting the campaign across the region.

Once the transformation is complete each household will return the diary to see how much they have now managed to cut their food waste. The household with the biggest savings will receive a luxury organic hamper.

Love Food Hate Waste is the ‘Waste Not Want Not’ of the modern day and it’s a big priority to reduce food in Yorkshire and Humber. Wasted food costs the average British family £50 every month (£680 per year for families with children), and we’re not talking bread crusts and potato peelings. An

astonishing 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year; 5.3 million tonnes of this is perfectly good food that has just not been eaten in time, or too much was cooked and the remainder thrown away. That’s like filling 4,700 Olympic sized swimming pools!

It is also bad for the environment. If every household stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the same as taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.

But while the effects of this wasted food are shocking, Love Food Hate Waste shows you easy ways to help you eat well, save money and make your food go further by planning meals, checking stocks and building confidence in the kitchen.

So households of all shapes and sizes and from across Yorkshire and Humber are needed

– from one bedroom flats to detached houses with big gardens, from big families with loads of kids, to shared households, couples or people living on their own.

Throughout the ‘Food Lover’ challenge, households will learn an array of simple, easy solutions that will help them to make the food that they have worked hard to pay for go much further, save time in the kitchen and take some big steps to reducing their carbon footprint.

So you see, it really does pay to be a food lover!

COPLEYʼS COLUMN One of the many perks that come my way as author of this column is the opportunity to do my bit by mentioning forthcoming charity events. My good friend and eminent author, Steve Cowens has brought to my attention two events this week in which he is involved.

On the 20th August, he has organised a charity night for his pal and fellow Blade, Steve Grant, who has undergone major surgery, with more to come for cancer. This is to be held at Manor Social Club, with two fabulous bands, Complete Madness and Section 60 on Friday night, is ticket only, priced at £15. Tickets are available at the Sportsman’s Inn, Denby Street and the Wharncliffe, Firth Park or by calling 07969 133010 or 07971 951371 or you can pay on the door on the night.

Also, on Sunday, 22nd August, Mosborough FC are holding a memorial fundraising day for team mate Mark ‘Ched’ Thorley who sadly passed away recently leaving a five year old son behind. The event is to be held between 1.00 p.m. and 7 p.m.at Mosborough Miner’s Welfare and features two top local bands Section 60 and Risky Heroes. There will be two charity games of football, a barbecue, raffle and auction with tickets priced at £5 with free entry for under 16’s. Go along and support these worthwhile causes. Steve Cowens is a diamond, always willing to support those in need. You can either pay on the day, or for more information, call 07969 133010.

On Sunday 29th August, there is a charity day at the Yew Tree, Coal Aston, which landlord Andrew has organised to benefit Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Bands appearing are Junkyard Dog, The Score and Screaming Kidney’s plus surprise guest appearances.

And finally, Glen Dale’s benefit night on September 3rd at Wadsley WMC, which commences at 8.00 p.m.This will be a fantastic night, with tickets reasonably priced at £6. Anyone requiring further information can phone me on 077 31 31 31 21 If you are looking for a bit of quality entertainment on Thursday night, the White Swan, Dronfield is a must. Appearing are a trio of exceptionally talented people, Emma Naylor, Joel White and the wonderful Russ Dennett, who together are magnificent. Also, at the Swan this week, on Tuesday night, I shall be celebrating my birthday, which will be attended by many local artistes. I shall report on this next week.

On Thursday night, we went to the White Swan, Dronfield, to se a class act, Sunny Daye and she was magnificent, having the audience in the palm of her hands from the minute she opened her act. Sunny epitomises the complete entertainer, and evidences the fact that artistes now have to have good linkage or be a bit different in these hard competitive times. It was nice to see Phil Booker, without whom this paper would not exist, and Gary Phillips in the audience.

I knew full well that they would be a disappointment for us, having the world’s number one ‘Agnetha’, Diana Edwards on our doorstep in N.E.Derbyshire. However, Mike Jones, a lively Scouser, really impressed us. Dressed immaculately in the traditional Elvis white suit, complete with all the gold chains and fancy belt, he came on stage telling gags, which he combined with plenty of Elvis songs. Going around the audience, inviting them to sing a line or two from his songs, he was quite taken aback by my ability to sing and sound like Elvis and during the instrumental break, asked who I was. I teased him by saying that I was an Elvis tribute act, whereupon he said over the mike ‘taxi for Howard, he’s too good’ All that singing in my car and the odd appearance with Tom Collins have obviously stood me in good stead. It does reinforce my view that artistes have to be a bit different from the norm.

The big football news has to be the sacking of Kevin Blackwell, manager of Sheffield United. This has come about as a result of the Blades early exit from the Carling Cup, and a humiliating home defeat by Queen’s Park Rangers, managed ironically by Blades former manager, Neil Warnock. If S.U.F.C. is to show any intention of being in the big time, a high profile appointment is essential. However, I suspect that the job will go to Gary Speed, to save them having to pay massive wages to someone with a proven track record.

Due to phenomenal public demand Peter Andre has announced he will play eleven dates around the UK in December this year stopping off at Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 18th December.

Earlier this year Peter embarked on a SOLD OUT 38 date Revelations UK tour, his first live dates in six years.

These new arena dates will give those not fortunate enough to have secured a ticket, for the spring tour, the opportunity to see Peter performing in arenas for the first time in over ten years The tour will see Peter performing live with his band, with audiences treated to tracks from his new album including top five single ‘Behind closed doors’ as well a number of his previous classic hits including Mysterious Girl.

This will be a brand new show with a stunning new production.

Following the success of his album Revelation last year, he has followed this with the release of Unconditional Love

Songs a collection of Peter’s favourite love songs from previous albums, as well as five covers of classic love songs, reworked and sung in Peter’s own style.

Both Peter’s albums have shown how he has developed as an artist, showing a more musically mature approach to his lyrics.

The new tour will give Peter the chance to prove to everyone that he is not only a brilliant studio artist but also a talented live vocalist and musician.

CALLING ALL FUN LOVERS Following a successful come back tour in March, Fun Lovin Criminals announce another string of UK dates for September, including a date at The Plug on Friday 3rd September.

Earlier this year the multi platinum funk soul brothers, with 4 Top 10 albums to their name, returned for the first time in five years with the album ‘Classic Fantastic’, a party album for a brand new decade featuring collaborations with Roots Manuva and Paul Kaye. The album, which was released on 1st March, burst out of the preceding gloom of the last five years with reviews citing a definitive return to form.

Well known for their raucous live shows, Fun Lovin Criminals wrapped up their Spring tour with a show stopping performance at a sold out Koko that earned them a 4 star review in The Times, who said ‘musically and spiritually this was a show by a band re-born.’

Huey Morgan has also been re-born as a TV and Radio personality, with his award winning ‘The Huey Show’ for 6 music, and the successful Sky 1 show ‘Pet Nation’ that he co hosts with Liza Tarbuck. Huey - who was recently described by The Times as ‘reformed hoodlum, pop star and the BBC’s new darling, Huey Morgan is a 21st-century gentleman’ - has just been nominated for another Sony Award for ‘Music Broadcaster Of The Year 2010’.

The band has embarked on this new chapter with a new philosophy.

“There’s this thing called Noetics,” explains Huey. “Which says if everybody thinks the same good thoughts, good things will happen. Likewise, negative thoughts - it’s not rocket science. And we all want the same thing, to be a Fun Lovin’ Criminal. You have to go through hell to get to heaven and now we’re finally out from under a lot of our problems, it’s a brand new day. LEAD VOX!

Ultravox doesn’t really need much of an introduction especially as their seminal hit Vienna seems to be Etched into the brain waves of every child at birth, yes it’s just one of those songs that everyone knows.

Yet the band had an incredible career and if you ask any true Ultravox fan there is certainly a lot more to them than Vienna. Warren Cann, Chris Cross, Billy Currie and Midge Ure have reformed Ultravox again for a UK tour entitled “Return to Eden”.

This would be the first time the classic line up of the band have performed together since Live Aid in 1985. The tour brings them to the O2 in Sheffield on the 25th. In September 2008, both Vienna and Rage In Eden were released in digitally remastered 2-disc format with the second disc containing previously unreleased material. Quartet and Monument were released in February 2009, also in two-disc editions. The second disc in the Monument package is a DVD containing the concert video that was previously only available on VHS tape. The other Chrysalisera releases are planned for similar future releases. A live CD and DVD of Ultravox sell-out Roundhouse show was released on 5 April 2010. The DVD features a documentary filmed on the build up to and during the reunion tour, much of it filmed by Midge Ure himself. Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Midge Ure stated that the reunion was only a one-off, and there would be no new material from the group. He said: “We’re not trying to recapture our youth and won’t be writing new songs or recording another album. This is about celebrating our music and our anniversary.” I always say “never say never”… eh Midge?

LEEDS FESTIVAL!!

Well it’s that time of year again when Leeds holds one of the UK’s biggest music festivals (if it’s not already in your diary its from Friday 27th August to Sunday 29th August). It’s a stella line-up and I just don’t have the room to tell you every artist that will appearing at the show, but here are some of the hi- lights.

Since they announced their reformation and US dates last year, UK fans have waited with bated breath to find out when Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker will return to these shores to play again. The wait is over with the announcement that BLINK-182 will play their exclusive UK Festival Appearance and only English shows in 2010 by headlining the Leeds Festival. The trio have sold millions of records world-wide since their formation in 1992 and have been sorely missed in their hiatus. Their inimitable punk rock sounds will be sure to fire up the crowds with classics such as ‘What’s My Age Again?’ ‘I Miss You’ and ‘All The Small Things’. When Axl Rose strides on stage to headline the Leeds Festival he is introducing one of the most outstanding, successful and controversial rock bands we have seen in the last 25 years. An acclaimed and thrilling live act, GUNS N’ ROSES’ countless hits have become soundtracks for music fans all over the world. Their latest album ‘Chinese Democracy’ was number one in 13 countries and has received countless awards all over the world. This is their only UK appearance this year. There is a palpable air of excitement around the return of ARCADE FIRE as they make their only UK Festival Appearance here this year. Since the release of their debut album ‘Funeral’ and its follow up ‘Neon Bible’ the band have wowed fans and critics alike with both releases featuring in ‘Best Of Decade’ polls across the world at the end of last year. PENDULUM made one of the biggest breakthroughs of recent years with their album ‘In Silico’. Having sold over 1 million records world-wide, the band are back with new album ‘Immersion. The excitement building around the band’s return is escalating and they are recognised as one of the most thrilling live acts around today (take it from me they are!). What can you say that hasn’t already been written about ASH? Their last album ‘Brand New Eyes’ entered the UK charts at number one and they recently picked up the Best International Act at the NME Awards in February of this year. Fronted by firecracker singer Hayley Williams the band has conquered the world since their formation in 2004 and have gone on to sell millions of albums and pick up countless awards. artist: Sky Ferreira Single: One release date: 23rd August What a cool name for an upcoming pop star to be! Dirty blonde, LA cool in a way, even the hippest kid from Leighton Buzzard never will be, and blessed with lips that’ll have Amanda Holden calling her surgeon. Sky Ferreira already seems like a star. She’s plucky too, having kick-started her recording career by sending an out-ofthe-blue MySpace message to Bloodshy & Avant, the Swedish production duo behind ‘Toxic’ and ‘Sweet Dreams My LA Ex’.

I personally have my doubts about the authenticity of this story mind you. It does seem like one of those “Hey, what would sound good in her biog? I know lets say…………..” You get my drift. I just don’t think things happen like that, if it is true then I think they’re missing a whole load of the story out here, there will have been a lot more to this.

Anyway, three years down the line it’s those same Scando hit makers twiddling the knobs on ‘One’, Ferreira’s longawaited debut single. Over percolating synths and purposeful beats, the 18-yearold popstrel sings about a relationship that’s making her feel like a robot (ooh a bit Marina and the Diamonds eh!.........I’ll be coming back to that later) in a suitably detached-sounding fashion - complete with lots of ear-snagging metronomic vocal hooks (“one one one one one...”).

Classy and elegant, but pretty insistent with it, this is the Joan Collins of electropop songs if anything. It is catchy but its teetering on being annoying; it’s a real fine line with this song. After a few listens you’ll either be in love with it or you will have shaved your own head in a fit of a “This isn’t as good as Toxic!” moment.

This really though is way too similar to Marina and the Diamonds throughout for my liking. She looks the same, sounds the same and even the video is a copy of her/their style. It’s probably the same old record company problem that haunts the industry, where they find a new successful artist and then sign up a dozen more just like them. and it’s fitting that this year’s Leeds Festival will see in the new decade with a performance from one the most important British bands of the past twenty years.

The Libertines are to reform after years of speculation to play Reading and Leeds Festival as the original four-piece with dual vocalists and guitarists Carl Barât and Peter Doherty, drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall. The band gave the world a kick in the proverbials, they played their own game, their own way, by their own rules and consequently paved the way for plenty of imitators but never equals. Special Guests LOSTPROPHETS gave Reading and Leeds the first preview of their fourth album ‘The Betrayed’ last year when they made a special appearance headlining the NME/Radio 1 tent.

The shows at both sites were legendary with crowds packed in for exhilarating performances. The record went top three on release and now everybody will have heard the hits ‘It’s Not the End of The World’, ‘Where We Belong’ and ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Felon’ to sing along to alongside their enviable back catalogue of festival favourites. Their recent UK tour garnered hugely excitable reviews and their return to the main stage will be sure to see a massive turn out for an excellent British rock band. With artist’s like Dizzee Rascal, Cypress Hill, The Futureheads, Limp Bizkit, Weezer, Biffy Clyro, Enter Shikari, The Cribs, Nofx, Damn! The list just goes on. There is really something for every music lover this year. If you have not booked your tickets yet I suggest you do it now……..YES! RIGHT NOW. LEEDS FESTIVAL Friday 27th August to Sunday 29th August.

One of the most iconic 80s pop bands, Culture Club racked up seven consecutive Top 10 hits in the UK and went on to score 5 Top 10 albums. This 2-disc set brings together a 17-track collection of their hits including ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’, ‘Time [Clock Of The Heart]’ & ‘Karma Chameleon’.

I personally was never a real lover of this band; I found them a bit too lightweight for me and way too poppy. But you can’t argue against their success. They were one of the few UK bands that claimed success over the water in the US and became huge over there. Boy George went on to become one of the biggest pop stars we’ve ever produced and we should be proud of that fact. I read his autobiography a few years ago and its one of the most entertaining reads I’ve ever had. Lots of scandal………….I love that!

I can’t wait to read the updated version about his spell in an American prison, that’s gotta be a brilliant read surely.

I digress, back to this package. What is a huge bargain with this release is that it comes with a free DVD of all 17 of their videos, plus an interview and a live medley. It’s nicely packaged with a colourful booklet and if you like Culture Club then you certainly won’t be disappointed with this release.

More than 400 people in the East Midlands are in the running for a NIVEA Feel Closer Award, which celebrate the relationships that matter, and now it’s your chance to choose the winner for your region.

Voting has now opened in the East Midlands, and until the end of August you can log onto www.nivea. co.uk/raceforlife, read the inspirational entries and select your favourite. The regional winner will then go head to head with nine other winners for the national crown which will be announced in October 2010.

Shefali Mattani, from NIVEA, comments: “The Feel Closer Awards give people the chance to celebrate the special people in their lives - particularly those that have had a positive or long-lasting impact on them.

We have had some fantastic nominations from East Midlands and wish all of the nominees the best of luck in the regional heat.”

74 year old Gerry Steele, from Burbage, is one of the nominees in the East Midlands in line for the award.

His daughter, Beverley nominated him for his work with mentally handicapped adults. Gerry lost his wife at an early age and successfully brought up three children single-handedly whilst working to help people in the community to cope with their disabilities.

Beverley says ‘he is full of fun and a well-respected member of the community’. Gerry has also recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer and is currently undergoing treatment with ‘great dignity and courage’.

Other nominees also in line for the award in the East Midlands include a girl who volunteers as a Samaritan and a blind lady who has served the community by working as a lollipop lady for the past 25 years.

The NIVEA Feel Closer Awards The East Midlands heat for the NIVEA Feel Closer Awards was launched earlier this year as part of the skin and beauty company’s partnership with Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Throughout the summer people from across the region have been nominated by their friends, family and loved ones.

Voting has now opened at NIVEA.co.uk/raceforlife, to find the winner for the East Midlands who will receive £250 and a NIVEA goodie bag. Voting closes on 30th August 2010. CLUBLAND AWARDS GROW EVER CLOSER Less than eight weeks remain before one of the biggest nights in Clubland – the Mercury Awards Night which this year is being held at Crookes (Thursday 7th October) – and voting in many categories is proving extremely competitive!

Only three weeks remain for voting – and as yet, the ballot boxes in your local clubs remain sealed – so although we have the numbers from the text, email and postal votes, the results could change dramatically once the boxes are collected!

Front runners in the Male Vocal section include Carl Taylor, Tristan Drew, Andrew Kennedy and Keith Alone, with a strong showing from Gary Phillips.

For the ladies, Sara Daniels, Bev Brookes and Vicki France are all threatening last year’s winner Abby Leigh Rowan, who is again attracting strong local support.

The Duo/Trio category is another where the competition is fierce – Dance Nation, the ever popular Star Star and Impulse are all generating votes on a regular basis – and Blue Ice are also in the frame as we write.

G String, the Fantastics, Halo, Foxx and CK2 have all been nominated in the Vocal Groups category, and continue to attract support as the weeks roll on.

One Way are in the field, with Tiger Feet, Whizzkid, Alexander’s Palace and Heroes all suddenly being threatened by a late run from Big Business, who are busy again following the recruitment of new lead vocalist Andy.

The new Tribute Act category is very interesting; we have had more nominations in this category than any other, and as yet there are no clear leaders. Both individual artist and groups are receiving votes, and the final result promises to be very close.

Newcomers sees Lee Lambert, G String, Kai Taylor Brotherhood and Sara Daniels all suggesting that they have made a strong impression in their early careers in Clubland.

The All Round category sees Dance Nation, Sara Daniels, the Fantastics and Jonny Martell all threatening the reigning champion, Gary Phillips – but they have a fair way to go to catch him!

Finally the Comedy Act has some intriguing wrinkles – as always, Jimmy Carol features strongly, but faces an interesting mix with Lee Lard, Sharpe Experience, Mens Club and Big Beat all receiving a steady stream of votes.

Awards Night is not to be missed – it features cameo performances from many of the award winners, and is truly a great show. Tickets are now available from the Mercury Ticket Hotline (01142 763701) or from Crookes Club.

NOTTINGHAM BREWER CROWNED KING OF THE CASTLE! After a year of local tasting panels and regional heats leading up to the finals, CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is today proud to announce that Castle Rock (of Nottingham) brewery’s Harvest Pale has been crowned the ‘Best Beer’ in Britain at the Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court, London.

Harvest Pale, which has an ABV of 3.8%, is described in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2010 as ‘blonde and refreshing with distinctive citrus hop.’

At Woodhouse Mill this week I came across a female vocalist I had never had the opportunity to see before, despite her being a local girl who has been on the club scene for over seven years.

She works under the name of Amanda Smith, and has a great voice, which she showed impressively on a range of ballads.

The crowd really enjoyed her performance, and I am determined to catch her full set in the near future, and learn a little bit more about her to report on.

Having been retired for 18 months from “show business” I have finally found the time to write its hard work holding down four jobs ie gardening ,window cleaning ,decorating (family business) and travelling abroad to boost the economy of our euro friends.

I was inspired to write because this weekend 14th.-15th. Aug. I saw two superb bands,on Saturday I travelled to Greasbrough W.M.C. to see one of my favourite bands COYOTE and I was not disappointed they wowed a full house not only with their musicianship but their attitude and enthusiasm everytime I have seen them they always look as though they are enjoying themselves, I know rock is not everybodies forte but personally I enjoy it because it reaches out and grabs you,on Sunday I went to Brinsworth W.M.C. a club of which I was proudly made a life member many years ago when you used to see ashtrays on

An article in the Mail a few weeks ago had a bit of a go about 2nd hand smoke & the ‘terrible consequences of’. One Daily Mail reader, obviously of no little eminence wrote in:“There ARE statistics that prove second hand smoke is just as bad as smoking yourself. - Lynn, UK, 22/7/2010 9:23 Well, Lynn UK, any idea where these statistics might be? Any idea which warped scientist actually thought it prudent to print such fallacious garbage? This only one instance of brainwashing gone to extremes. I feel very sorry for Lynn UK! Here’s another absolute gem! (could this be the cold, calculating 2 ton Ted from TeddingTON who attacked the milkman-poor old Ernie?):“Hugging a child while covered in a layer of chemicals deposited by smoking, or lifting you child with the hands you held your cigarettes in is even worse than 2nd hand smoking, as the chemicals are transferred though contact. - Ton, London, 22/7/2010 8:26 Now this poor fool has obviously taken the totally ridiculous findings of Dr Jonathon Winickoff straight to heart-hook, line and sinker! (Winickoff, you remember did a phone survey of 1,300 bewildered people asking severely ‘loaded questions’-and announced 3rd hand smoke to the scientific world-they lapped it up, especially the media!)

Think back to the days when we cooked by fire alone, when we boiled kettles over a fire, when houses were heated by coal fires etc, now just how much coal dust, coke dust or other “toxic particulate” was swarming around our houses, our clothes, our furniture, our very beings! When all this tables, I sat with some old friends who make the Mad Hatters tea party appear a sedate affair (no offence).Appearing onstage were a band I had not seen before called Band of Brothers needless to say this will not be my last viewing of this top class band,containing superb musicianship and upfront one of the best male voices I have heard in many years the type of voice I could listen too alnight again it was classic rock music ,I hope this talented foursome from the north of England get the promotion they deserve from their management(DIXON AGENCY).

Think of all the bonfires since time began, old wood, unwanted vegetation and general garden rubbish every weekend-how much toxic particulate did clothes collect off that lot? Did anyone care? Not a jot. As far as people were concerned bonfires were fun, a means to an end, a necessity; it was all in a days work for most people.

In this cash strapped time it is inconceivable that $3.75m has been made available in America to investigate the ‘disastrous effects of 3rd hand smoke’. I say disastrous effects purposely for no matter what you think, the ‘scientist/s’ picked for this task have been well vetted and are anti tobacco crusaders (no doubt!).

Most certainly they will not have signed the Brussels Declaration of Scientific Integrity, which is exactly what it says it is-a register for scientists to register their integrity in scientific dealings-not following the money!

Our 3rd hand smoke ‘scientists’ are following the money without doubt so don’t be surprised in the slightest when a major report comes out stating that 3rd hand smoke is akin to sarin gas! You won’t be surprised to hear that the money emanates from California, home all smoke bans. California is bankrupt but the university, apparently, is not! No matter what the scientific evidence actually says, parts of that evidence will be ‘cherry picked’ to suit and the inevitable reports compiled for Banzhaf (ASH-USA) Arnott (ASH-UK) & Duffy ASH (Scotland) to wave about like demented semaphore students!

Have you got the drift yet of what is happening in this country (and others). Globalink, the New World Order & the WHO want to eradicate tobacco altogether.

They don’t care about jobs, personal likes and dislikes or peoples financial security, all they want is tobacco extinction-and they’ve got NO CHANCE-but they can make our lives a misery in the process!

The event that was held in memory of former Pastmasters Drummer Tommy Sloane was a huge success and managed to raise £1050 for the MacMillan Nurses Pallative Care charity at the Northern General.

He would also like to thank Past Masters, Beat Merchants and Damion for there great live performances on the night.

HURRAY, HURRAY, ITʼS A HOLI-HOLI-DAY MAGIC AM WEEKLY COLUMN

Well, by the time you read this I will have jetted off to the Costa Blanca.

Taking a couple of weeks off, I’m visiting my parents who sold up and emigrated three years ago. Being part of a large family, we do all miss each other a lot, but it does mean I get to enjoy my own package holiday when I pay them a visit.

As you can imagine and can probably vouch for, the temperature there can get quite unbearable at around this time of year, although my girlfriend Pauline and I got rather more than we were bargaining for last time.

The plane came in to land at Alicante airport in the middle of one of the thickest and greyest clouds you could ever wish to find, and I ended up wading through puddles in my flip flops to get to the car park. My Dad did admit that the weather had only changed that afternoon, although much of the next week was filled with rain, hail, thunder and lightning.

Living on a Spanish “urbanization” complex, where their electricity supply is almost as new as the houses that have been built there, there were quite a few lengthy power outages as well.

Having got back to South Yorkshire, somewhat bedraggled and without a tan, Pauline and myself did decide to treat ourselves to a final few days away in Bridlington, and as you might have deducted, the weather was a lot better.

Is there a moral to this story? Well no, but given our climate, if ever you’re in the company of someone bragging about where they might have been, just remember that you may quite rightly have had just as good a time here.

PET BEREAVEMENT How to cope after saying goodbye Coming to terms with the loss of a family pet is never easy, whether their death was sudden and unexpected or a decision made due to illness. But it’s important to express your feelings says leading veterinary charity, PDSA. The grieving process consists of many different stages, including disbelief, pain, anger, guilt and acceptance.

The first stage is often disbelief and shock. It may be hard to accept that your pet is no longer with you, especially if they have been in your family for many years, and your house may feel very empty and quiet.

The next stage is often pain, anger and depression.

Things that remind you of your pet, such as their toys and bedding or the sound of a neighbour’s pet can be painful to see and hear.

Many people will also experience feelings of guilt, asking themselves what they could have done differently to prevent them becoming ill. These reactions are perfectly normal and the heartache will ease over

time.

The last stage of the grieving process is acceptance.

Owners should remember the joy their pet brought them and the companionship they shared. It is often comforting to commemorate the life of your pet.

There are many ways of doing this such as framing a favourite picture or planting a tree. PDSA offers any owner the opportunity to purchase a pet tribute tag to hang at PDSA’s Paws Forever Pet Tribute Garden (visit www.pdsa.org.uk for more details).

Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, says: “The loss of a companion can be heartbreaking, so make sure you share your feelings with others who understand your loss, and don’t feel embarrassed to

show your emotions. If you are struggling to cope with the loss of a pet, there are dedicated pet bereavement counselling services that you can contact, so ask at your veterinary practice for details. Grief affects people in different ways, but gradually, over time, the pain and sense of loss will eventually ease.”

Vermiculture….. It’s not a pleasant sounding word admittedly, but what is it and why should it interest anglers? I met Andy Hunt the other week in the course of my work, he was sticking a leaflet under my windscreen wipers as I walked back towards my van; I hate it when that happens and normally sling them straight into the nearest bin! On this occasion however, something about the words caught my eye as I’d never heard of vermiculture, so I shouted Andy over, introduced myself and we and quick chat.

Vermiculture is the science of composting organic materials using worms to break them down into heterogeneous components and vermicast! A by product, or indeed staple of this method of composting is the humble dendrobena worm…….!

(No, I didn’t know either!)

NO JOY AT WIDNES RUGBY LEAGUE

by Jim Collins Eagles face having to win their final game of the season if they are to make the play-offs after defeat at top-six rivals Widnes Vikings.

A couple of cruel bounces of the rugby ball saw the Eagles go behind in the game but they almost forced their way back with a great spell in the second half.

Prop forward Jack Howieson was named in the subs, his first game for the Eagles after five months off following arm and knee injuries.

The Eagles faced a torrid opening spell as Widnes dominated possession and took up residence in the final 20 metres for long spells.

Widnes took the lead with a scrappy try after a fumbled a chip from Anthony Thackeray and the video ref ruled that Dean Gaskell had touched down. Danny Craven added the goal.

Howieson came into the action but it was the video ref came to the Eagles aid as he ruled out a touchdown by Jim Gannon.

NEW COACH SIMON ARRIVES IN SHEFFIELD ICE HOCKEY

Steelers’ coach Ben Simon arrived in Sheffield earlier this week, and was greeted by a small group of fans who had gathered at the Arena to welcome him.

Simon and his Assistant Coach Neil Abel replace Head Coach Dave Matsos, who left in the massive management walk-out which stunned the fanbase earlier this summer.

With the players due in before the end of the month and the shirt launch arranged for Thursday September 2nd at 7pm, plans for the on-ice product are beginning to take shape. Fans are still more than dubious, however, about the club’s off-ice situation, as news broke earlier this week that another writ had been issued against Steelers’ owner Bob Phillips. Lawyers are still seeking money for creditors from the 2005 collapse of the Steelers operating company and, though £55,000 has already been paid, around £150,000 is still owed. Phillips is personally liable for these debts, and may be bankrupted if legal proceedings require bailiffs to be brought in to seize assets to cover the deficits.

Sheffield Steelers have signed a deal with Hallam FM, who join the ranks of Steelers “sponsors” who will not be forking over any cash to the club as part of their sponsorship agreement. The deal they have struck involves advertising on both sides and radio features, but no money will change hands.

The respite didn’t last long as kick from Craven hit the post and a wicked bounce gave Chris Gerrard and easy touched down.

Craven added the goal.

The Eagles pack was holding the Vikings and as the half went into its final minutes they dragged the play into the Widnes 20 metres zone. A scrum set up the position and centre Tangi Ropati provided the final spark with cross field run before passing to Bergin who weaved his way past a couple of Widnes players for the try.

Simon Brown couldn’t add the conversion but at 12-4 down at half-time the Eagles were in the game.

Disaster struck three minutes after the restart as a pass was intercepted by Thackeray who ran the length of the field to score under posts and Craven added the goal.

The Eagles blasted back and with their best rugby of game laid siege to the Vikings line with Menzie Yere, Mitch Stringer, Ryan Hepworth and Joe Hirst going close to claiming a try.

It was complete reversal of the first half with the Eagles dominating possession and Widnes scrambling to defend their line.

The try finally came on 61 minutes with from a scrum Brendon Lindsay’s pass finding

The pressure couldn’t last and a try and goal from Craven restored Widnes’ points cushion. A late Gerrard try and Craven goal gave a final score line that flatter Widnes.

Rotherham United maintained their unbeaten start to the League Two season after a hard fought 0-0 draw at Morecambe.

In an entertaining game the Millers created several opportunities with Adam Le Fondre coming closest in the first half when he smashed the bar with a shot from 25 yards.

Manager Ronnie Moore reverted to the side that beat Lincoln City for the first League Two game at the Globe Arena.

The game started slowly but the Millers were the brighter and had the first effort on goal after six minutes.Tom Newey broke down the left and delivered a low cross, which was cleared as far as Le Fondre, but the marksman shot wide from 10 yards.

The visitors tried to build on their early possession and forced Barry Roach to make the first save of the game inside nine minutes.Tom Elliott broke forward and fed Danny Harrison, who shot left-footed from distance and forced Roach into a smart save low to his left.Kevin Ellison tried his luck form the edge of the area moments later, but his shot on the turn sailed over the crossbar.

Morecambe slowly gained a foothold in the game and had two attempts on goal around the half hour mark.Former Millers loanee Adam Rundle was involved on both occasions, breaking forward and shooting for the edge of the area.His first attempt was easily saved by Andy Warrington and he skewed his second well wide.

The Millers came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 48 minutes. Le Fondre advanced with the ball and when the Morecambe defence backed off he unleashed a fierce drive from 20 yards which rattled the crossbar.

Morecambe then went straight down the other end and almost scored themselves. Phil Jevons played in Rundle who shot across goal from a narrow angle but the ball went wide of the far

CHESTERFIELD Chesterfield use a 4-4-2 formation.

When defending, Chesterfield attempt to get two solid banks of four players behind the ball whenever they can. In the game I saw Chesterfield played long from back to front as they were pressured by the opposing team’s attack.

In particular they looked to play diagonal balls across the field to target Davies who pulled out wide to receive the ball. However, when not pressured, as in pre season games, they looked to work the ball into the feet of supporting players, through centre midfield to the strikers and wide midfield players.

Chesterfield were more aggressive and competitive in this game than they had been pre season, but even so, they were not overly physical throughout the game. Chesterfield have reasonable height throughout the side without having anyone that is exceptionally tall. However, Breckin is a good focal point for deliveries at set pieces. Most of the pace in the Chesterfield side is confined to the wide areas, primarily with Hunt at right full back. Both strikers are reasonably mobile, as is Ford at the back.

The defence try to push up when Chesterfield have the ball, but drop back when possession is lost.

Although Breckin looks to lack mobility at times, both central defenders looked reasonably solid on a day when they were not tested thoroughly by their visitor’s strikers.

On 51 minutes the home side threatened again. Laurence Wilson crossed from the right byline to Jevons 18 yards out but his shot flew over the bar and out of the ground.

On the hour mark the Millers missed a glorious chance. Le Fondre created room on the right before digging out a perfect cross for Elliott but his unmarked header was planted just wide of the far post.

On 71 minutes Newey made a good break down then left before finding Ellison just inside the area. The winger took one touch to steady himself before hammering a shot goalwards but Roach made a brilliant reflex stop to keep the scores level.

Two minutes later and Ellison had another half chance. Dean Holden’s cross was scooped into air after a mistimed clearance, the ball came down for Ellison but his scuffed effort was straight at Roach.

Morecambe should have been in front on 79 minutes. Rundle’s corner wasn’t dealt with by the Millers defence allowing Chris McCready a free header but the ball cannoned against the post and landed to safety.

Ronnie Moore was happy with the Millers display after a hard fought 0-0 draw with Morecambe at the Globe Arena.

The Millers maintained their unbeaten start to the league season with a good performance which saw them create several presentable goalscoring chances.

“I think that we just about shaded it,” said Ronnie after the game.

“It was a great game of football, especially in the second half and both sides had good chances. It would have been nice to see Alfie’s shot fly into the top corner in the second half but to be fair they have had chances to win when Rundle has put a couple past the post.

“I cannot fault the players effort and commitment. We tried to play the right way by getting the ball down and passing it. It was a great game for everyone watching it and I was pleased with the way we played, we just have to make sure that when we are on top of teams we kill them off.”

The game was close throughout the 90 minutes and Ronnie believes that it typified the tightness of the division overall.

“I think that this season there are going to be a lot of games like this,” he added.

“There isn’t much between the sides; I don’t think that there is an outstanding team that will run away with it. There are going to be so many draws at this level this season.”

Att: 3,258 Att the ball long from back to front the Chesterfield defence looked very comfortable winning the vast majority of balls competed for in the air. Both central defenders, Breckin and Ford, won most of their headers fairly easily and were not unduly troubled by their visitors lack lustre attack consisting of a lone striker without support for much of the time. Either of the central defenders came out of the back line to be the first to challenge for the ball depending on which side of the park was threatened, Breckin sticking to the right and Ford the left. Only very rarely, when they were pressured, did the defence play the ball out long from the back. Whenever possible they played the ball short to supporting players. Neither full back pressed on to any great extent, but of the two Hunt was more likely to get forward in support than Morris. Both full backs were exposed to being hit on the counter attack. Often when this happened the Chesterfield full backs came very narrow leaving far too much space down the wide right channels for the opposing team’s players to exploit and get their crosses into the box. Both full backs looked very positionally naïve at times, allowing opponents to get behind them to get on the end of long diagonal balls. Both full backs looked to find a pass down the wide channel to the wide midfield players whenever possible.

Neither of the two wide midfield players, Talbot and Whitaker, attempted to get goal side of the opposing full backs down the wide channel very much. Mostly they tended to cut inside to threaten the opposing box, this was particularly true of Whitaker playing on the left as he is predominantly right footed.

Very few crosses were delivered into the middle of the box to target the heads of the strikers. The wide players left the full backs very exposed at times, particularly so after they had cut inside and then

their opponents broke quickly down the wide channels without giving them the chance to recover their wide positions. Both central midfield players, Mattis and Allott, shared responsibility to close down and track the runs of opposing players, but neither did so with any aggression or competitiveness.

Allott was the more likely to play a little deeper, sitting in to protect the back four whilst Mattis was the more likely to break forward in support of attacking play. However, these roles were interchanged occasionally. Whenever possible the central midfield players worked the ball out the wide midfield players or into the feet of the strikers, but neither of them showed a great deal of creativity in their forward play.

Chesterfield’s strikers, Lester and Davies, have a good blend of pace and mobility without providing much of a threat in the air when the ball is played long. Occasionally the ball is played in behind, through or over the top of the opposing defence for the strikers to run onto. Most commonly the ball was played into the feet of the strikers, including when the ball came in from the wide areas, often in positions along the edge of the eighteen yard box.

The strikers would then try to make space for a shot, or bring supporting players into the game with some neat interplay. However, they rarely got in behind the opposing defence and their keeper was not over worked. Of the three strikers, including substitute Bowery, Davies was the most likely to apply pressure to opponents to deny them time on the ball. He was also the most likely to drop back into the midfield area to challenge for the ball, and can be successful in winning possession when coming in on the blind side.

When possession is lost and play is near their own box, Lester comes deeper into his own half with Davies staying nearer to the half way line.

The Blades made a disastrous start to the home npower Championship campaign after conceding three goals in the opening 23 minutes against QPR. Neil Warnock got the better of Kevin Blackwell for the first time in four meetings, although he was helped considerably by the officials.

Referee Kevin Woolmer handed Rangers a first half penalty and turned away United’s appeals for a spot kick on three separate occasions. Goals from Hogan Ephraim, Jamie Mackie and Adel Taarabt secured the victory for the visitors.

New loan defender Bartley started - Ertl switching to right back to accommodate him - and other than that boss Blackwell went with the same personnel that drew at Cardiff, helped by Evans recovering from an ankle problem.

Rangers boss Warnock, as expected, named Lane old boy Kenny in goal and the visiting squad also included former Blades, Derry and Leigertwood. United kicked towards the Kop in the first half forcing Kenny to defend in front of the fans who once adored him but he was given a hostile recep-

tion at kick-off.

Kenny was fouled from United’s first set-piece and he would have been pleased that the home fans’ attentions soon turned to the referee. Mr Woolmer failed to spot fouls on both Evans and Ward the latter in the penalty area - just before QPR broke away to score with 11 minutes gone. Taarabt found EPHRAIM in space down the left and the winger approached Simonsen unopposed before sliding into the corner of the net.

Mr Woolmer then booked Montgomery, despite him winning the ball in a challenge with Taarabt, and worse was to follow as QPR extended their lead to three with two goals in the space of three minutes - with the referee again involved!

However, the visiting side’s second was a well worked move that opened up United’s defence.

Ephraim found the space to turn back onto his right and deliver a cross to the back post where an unmarked MACKIE attacked the ball and beat Simonsen with a header.

Ephraim was again involved as Rangers added their third on 23 minutes. After receiving another pass from Taarabt, the winger’s shot was parried by Simonsen, who was then adjudged to have fouled Taarabt as they challenged for the loose ball. There was shocked faces around the ground as the referee pointed to the spot and TAARABT accepted the gift, slotting home the spot-kick.

Blackwell switched to 4-4-2

with Cresswell joining Evans in attack and Quinn moving wide and the remainder of the half saw the Blades on the attack. Kenny pushed over Cresswell’s header from Montgomery’s cross and then Evans headed wide from Ertl’s delivery.

Referee Woolmer then topped off his first half performance by waving away two more United penalty appeals - one clear-cut in front of assistant referee Fearn.

On 41 minutes Evans looked to have escaped Hill until the defender lunged in and took away the legs of the striker. The decision of a corner was all the more amazing as the Rangers player failed to touch the ball!

And, to add insult, the officials could not spot Gorkss climbing over the back of Bartley as United launched the ball into the box once more.

Things didn’t get much better for Bartley as he was booked moments after the restart but United were again on top. Ward fired a free-kick in a dangerous position into the wall and Cresswell could not find the target when under pressure from Gorkss and Hall.

The Rangers duo of Ephraim and Taarabt continued to be a threat and they linked up on 53 minutes to set up Faurlin but his accurate shot was blocked, at the expense of a corner, by Ertl.

Bogdanovic replaced the struggling Evans and Ward could have cut the deficit with 70 minutes gone but he appeared to be surprised to be presented with a shooting opportunity. The last throw of the dice was a double substitution - Kozluk and Yeates introduced - but it was one of the visiting replacements, Leigertwood, who went close as the game entered the final ten minutes.

The final minutes were incidental as United failed to cause undue problems to the visiting side’s goal and there were plenty of unhappy faces at the full-time whistle, added five added minutes of injury time.

It was the Mariners first home game of the season and 8,447 were inside the Bluetongue Stadium to see Graham Arnold’s side fight-back from a half-time deficit. The Mariners boss said afterwards: “We’re trying to play good football, and we’re gradually coming together.”

Ferencvaros, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing 3-1 at home to Budapest rivals, Honved.

Our Hungarian cousins failed to recover from a 3-0 half-time deficit, although David Kulcsar pulled a goal back after the interval.

by Jon Warburton Whenever a manager leaves a football club, bookies up and down the country instantly begin scribbling odds for who will be their replacement.

But after Kevin Blackwell was relieved of his duties as Sheffield United manager following a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to QPR, there was only ever going to be one replacement.

Gary Speed has been steadily progressing towards football management after assuming coaching responsibilities at the Lane, and has made no secret of his desire to one day make the step up.

When Swansea City showed interest in taking Speed to the Liberty Stadium in the summer, the former Welsh maestro was clearly attracted to the challenge but the Bramall Lane hierarchy were loathe to see him leave.

You can only assume that Speed was given assurances that as reward for spurning the advances of the South Wales club, he would be in serious contention for the Bramall Lane hot seat if Blackwell was to go.

Arguments will surface as to Speed’s credentials as a football manager, but as it stands we have no way of knowing how he will fair.

People might call Speed a cheap option, but what many will fail to realise is that there was never going to be another outcome.

If McCabe thought that he had to find another manager from outside the club on potentially high wages and with possible compensation to pay, you can bet your life that Blackwell wouldn’t have gone.

Fortunately there happened to be a young, fresh candidate within the club who wouldn’t require massive wages and whose appointment it seems will be greeted favourably by the vast majority of fans.

At the time of writing Speed hasn’t actually been appointed, so if McCabe has pulled the wool over all our eyes and lined up someone else then we’ll all know by now.

But if it’s Speed then if nothing else we can sleep soundly in the knowledge that we have the best looking manager in English football…until Iain Dowie gets a new job.

The left-back made 25 appearances in the top-flight last season and admits that is where he wants to return, believing United have the main ingredient to succeed in the Championship: “This is a massive club with aspirations to be in the Premier League. “The key in this division is consistency. If you can get on a good winning run then you can shoot up the table, but that can also work the other way, too.

“One of the main positives here is experience, a lot of the lads know what winning promotion is about and they have already tasted topflight football.”

Sheffield Wednesday secured a deserved point in their first away outing of the new season thanks to substitute Neil Mellor’s late strike against a hard working Colchester United side.

The man on a season-long loan from Preston netted his first goal competitive goal for the Owls late in the second half, superbly barging his way through the Colchester defence and firing home, after Andrew Bond had given the hosts the lead in spectacular fashion.

Wednesday manager Alan Irvine made six changes to his starting line-up for the trip to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

After the midweek cup victory over Bury, Lewis Buxton, Marcus Tudgay, Chris Sedgwick, Giles Coke, Clinton Morrison and James O’Connor all returned.

Only three sides left Colchester with maximum points last season - Leeds, Norwich and Millwall all of whom secured promotion to the Championship, and the Owls started brightly.

Gary Teale in particularly was looking lively down the left flank.

First he cut inside his marker and fired wide, before minutes later whipping in a cross that only narrowly eluded the waiting O’Connor and Morrison.

The hosts enjoyed their first real spell of possession ten minutes in.

A neat passing move culminated in Ian Henderson’s effort that fizzed wide of Nicky Weaver’s post.

Blustery conditions on a sunny afternoon in Essex somewhat hampered any attempts of free-flowing football from either side. Instead the game turned into a contest that was largely dominated by both defences. U’s striker David Mooney did beat the offside trap, but could only skew his effort across the face of Weaver’s goal.

Wednesday then created the best chance of the game just after the half hour mark. A direct freekick into the Colchester box was flicked on by Tudgay into the path of Morrison, who saw his scooped effort from just outside the sixyard box drift narrowly over the crossbar.

The Owls continued to turn the screw. Moments later Tudgay found Teale out on the left flank, and the Scotsman curled a delightful ball into the box, only for U’s defender Magnus Okuonghae to clear the ball against the onrushing Morrison, who in turn was unlucky not to bundle the ball over the line beyond a stranded goalkeeper.

After the interval John Ward’s men flew out of the traps. Da-

vid Perkins tested Weaver from distance, but the Wednesday goalkeeper could do nothing about Bond’s spectacular effort minutes later. Colchester collected the ball in the midfield, before farming possession out wide to Bond. The 24-year-old then superbly let the ball run across his body before letting fly from all of 25 yards leaving Weaver helpless as the ball thundered into his top corner.

Buoyed by the goal the hosts pushed to double their lead.

Mooney had two glorious chances, first sliding an effort wide after clever work from Perkins and then smashing an effort against the foot of the post.

Wednesday rallied, and Mellor was thrown on in place of Teale in an attempt to add more bite to the frontline. And it almost worked immediately when Tudgay wriggled away from a couple of defenders in the area, but his low drive was well held by Mark Cousins in the Colchester goal.

As time trickled away from the Owls, the Colchester players did all they could to slow the game down, taking their time over throw-ins and free-kicks.

Wednesday huffed and puffed and bombarded the Colchester area in the last 15 minutes, but for all their hard work it just seemed as if the ball would not go in.

Morrison had an appeal for a penalty turned down whilst at the other end Mooney fired over after a breakaway Colchester attack.

Just when it seemed Wednesday were dead and buried, they got the goal their pressure deserved. Mark Beevers diverted a header back into the Colchester box towards Mellor, who controlled the ball with his head before bustling his way into the area and firing home in front of the travelling Wednesdayites.

Despite pushing for what would have been a dramatic winner, there was to be further drama as the hosts held on for a point.

After the game he told Wednesday Player: “As a striker it’s important to get your first goal. The longer it goes, the more frustrating it can be but thankfully it’s come early in my Sheffield Wednesday career so hopefully that’s the first of many.

“After my goal I thought we were going to go on and win the game.

We had a few half chances to do that so it was pleasing that we carried on pressing and tried to go for the win.”

Mellor will be hoping for a place in the starting XI next week when the Owls host Brighton but realises he will have to work hard for that starting shirt with stiff competition up front for

Wednesday.

He added: “Everyone wants to start but there is a very healthy competition for places. We have four very decent strikers at this club, all capable of scoring goals, and we’ll hopefully all contribute to what will be a successful season.

“I obviously want to start games and win games so scoring goals will help.”

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has hailed the impact of substitute Neil Mellor after the loanee striker came off the bench to rescue a point for the Owls at Colchester.

Trailing to Andrew Bond’s second half opener, Wednesday restored parity seven minutes from time when Mellor showed strength and guile to shake off his marker and blast home from close range.

The goal was his first since signing from Preston on a season-long loan in the summer.

Irvine said: “Neil took his goal really well and once he got into that position I expected him to score.

“He’s not been firing on all cylinders so far, he’s still settling in here, so hopefully that goal will do him a lot of good.

“It certainly gives me plenty to think about regarding my team selection for the next game but it’s the kind of problem that managers don’t mind having.”

Irvine switched his tactics to a 4-3-3 formation on the hour upon Mellor’s introduction and duly got his reward as the Owls offered looked far more likely in the final third.

He added: “I am not just a 4-4-2 manager. I can switch tactics when we need to do so and I thought the lads responded very well. It shows they are versatile and can listen to the instructions.

“I thought we would lose the game if we stayed at 4-4-2, so I had to change and thankfully we got the break we needed.”

by Bunsen Bob With 4 points from 6 and a safe passage to Glamour Town in the League Cup it has been a satisfactory start to the new season if not mind blowing.

No single player has yet to be earmarked as the latest saviour for the Owls but Coke and Morrison seem to be jostling for that position in the minds of Wednesdayites I have spoken to.

It’s been workmanlike, purposeful and cohesive without sending shockwaves down League One and we’ll need to continue this style to continue to get results against stubborn opposition. Goals haven’t exactly been flowing like wine but they have been quenching our thirst like a reliable can of Vimto. I can handle that.

The cliché of winning without playing particularly well tends to be something of a compliment and one which I could easily extend to Wednesday’s start to the season.

However, I won’t as our victories have come against Bury and Dagenham and Redbridge. Any team with the word ‘and’ in their name, not only makes for clumsy sentences but reeks of lower level football. I’ll be stunned to the core if any Daggers fans read this fine publication so I won’t bother apologising for any offence this may cause. For instance, Havant & Waterlooville, Rusden & Diamonds, Daphne & Celeste are all devoid of quality and redeeming features.

Let’s hope we can muster another 20k+ crowd on Saturday so we can prove my point about the correlation in football between quality and team name as we welcome Brighton & Hove Albion.

The founder of the Sheffield Wednesday band John Hemmingham will be attending a book signing in the Owls Megastore.

John started the Kop Band after learning to play the bugle as a youngster and is now one sixth of the England Supporters Band, which has played at more international matches than David Beckham.

Hemmingham recounts the story of how the band began through to first being asked to playing for England by Glen Hoddle in his new book, Playing For England the Early Years.
