PARAMORE ANNOUNCE SHEFFIELD VISIT ARENA NEWS - PAGE 4

Exciting New Play Areas Springing Up Across Sheffield Young people across Sheffield now have even more opportunities to get active during the school holidays Eleven new-style active play areas have been completed across Sheffield in time for the Spring Bank holiday as part of the city’s Play Project scheme. Each of the playgrounds features a range of play equipment chosen by local children. Amongst the equipment on offer is a climbing forest in Hillsborough Park, giant nest swings at Beaver Hill and Rolling Acres, climbing boulders at Darnall and Richmond Parks, a willow tunnel at Charnock, waterplay at Millhouses, a BMX track at Richmond

Park, climbing nets at Tara Springs Park on Dorset Street and a giant circus hoop at Fox Hill. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, the Council’s Cabinet member for Communities said: “One of the things we said we would do is provide extra investment to improve our much loved parks and green spaces right across the city. Despite the terrible weather conditions through the winter, the first phase of the scheme has been successfully completed. We consulted with local people, including the young people who

will actually use the equipment, to ensure the play areas meet their demands”. Last year Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet approved the injection of around £2 million into 23 play spaces across the city over a two year period. The City Council has been closely working with NHS Sheffield as part of the Let’s Change4Life programme to create a new generation of playgrounds that offer young people a challenge, helping them to get fit while providing fun and in more natural surroundings. “This money will

make improvements right across the city including Chapletown in the North, Herdings in the South, and Woodhouse in the East and Stannington in the West.” Councillor Mohammed added: “The key to this programme’s success is engaging with communities and working with the friends groups. Of course, it’s vital that we also talk to the children themselves. By doing this we intend to get the best possible result for local people from this major investment.” To mark the completion of the first 11

playgrounds the Council’s Activity Sheffield and Parks and Countryside Ranger Service are holding events at six of the improved parks over the Spring Bank Holiday. (see notes for editors). Andy Chaplin of the Friends of Hillsborough Park said: “The new play area is already proving very popular with young people and provides a useful alternative for slightly older youths to the original playground, which is ideal for younger children. This is yet another excellent facility for the park,

but by no means the last!” The second year of the Play Project is well under way, with designs being prepared for 12 further sites right across the city. One of the most ambitious proposals for next year is a new woodland play site in the Rivelin Valley, which makes the most of the natural surroundings to create a city destination site that will attract users across Sheffield. Sheffield was awarded £1.1 million to provide challenging, exciting, accessible and innovative play equipment and spaces for children and young people.

The programme was enhanced by an additional £500,000 through the Sheffield Let’s Change4Life programme under their Active Play initiative. This programme aims to dramatically reduce levels of childhood obesity within the city and the designs have been chosen to provide a physical challenge for children to help in the campaign to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity. The remaining funding has come from the Big Lottery, Yorkshire Water, Landfill Tax Credits and Section 106 (planning gain income).
