UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD AND SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL LAUNCH 2ND MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Cathedral will host a diverse and vibrant programme of events in June exploring music, film, literature, contemporary art, local history, current trends, world cultures and much more. The Summer Music and Arts Festival which will run between 3 – 12 June 2010, will take place at Sheffield Cathedral and builds upon the success of last year’s inaugural festival, which has seen both institutions contribute more to the cultural life of the city centre, making the festival an integral part of the city centre calendar. The Festival opens on Thursday 03 June with a trip down memory lane in The Reel Monty and a Shopaholics Guide to 1970s. Comprising of two short films and a talk, this event documents
Sheffield in its `boom and bust´ era of the 1970s, in a time when Sheffield was boasted as the Shopping Capital of the North, with Christmas Illuminations to rival Blackpool. On Friday 04 June, the wise words of local legend, poet Ian McMillan, will be interspersed with a set of swinging jazz standards by the Impressions Jazz Quintet in an evening of Poetry and Jazz. Ian McMillan has been a poet, broadcaster, commentator and programme-maker for over 20 years, often appearing on television and radio and contributing to national media. On Saturday 05 June, world music is represented with the Krar Collective presenting a stunning programme of music and dance from different parts of Ethiopia. Full of the worldly magic of Ethiopian modes and hypnotic rhythms, the
dancers re-enact scenes of village life in colourful traditional dress and with jaw-droppingly energetic folk dances unique to Ethiopia. Exploring current trends are two literature components, the first on Monday 07 June, Sheffield’s Lost Symbols, looks at the 2009 novel by American writer Dan Brown “The Lost Symbol” in an illustrated lecture by the Very Reverend Peter Bradley, and Freemasonry expert Dr Andreas Onnerfors . The talk looks into why Dan Brown´s work is so intriguing, if the rituals and imagery described is fact or fiction, followed by a tour of the city centre, pointing out some of Sheffield’s own lost symbols. On Wednesday 07 June, the Twilight phenomenon is also featured in Twilight, Vampires and the Uncanny, exploring our current
obsession with vampires, the mythology and history behind their existence, the bizarre concept of a vegetarian vampire, in a must see for all who currently obsessed with the Cullens, and the vampire craze! An Electric Prom takes place on Tuesday 08 June, where local band Screaming Maldini follows in the footsteps of Robbie Williams, Dizzee Rascal, Doves, Dame Shirley Bassey and Smokey Robinson in a format that will see the group presenting orchestral and choral arrangements of their sensational songs, combined with some of the classics in a unique and rare programme where popular music of the 21st century meets the classical greats. Contemporary Art makes an appearance on Thursday 10 June in The Painter, the Frenchman
and the Organist. Mark Rowan-Hull is a highly successful abstract painter, whose large, vibrant, colourful canvasses are inspired by the colours he hears in music. He will paint to live organ music by the composer Maurice Durufle (played by Anthony Gowing, Organist of Sheffield Cathedral) in an event that explores interpretation, between the composer the organist and the painter. A sequel event to last year´s sell-out Nosferatu the Vampyre, two further cinematic horror masterpieces of the silent film genre with improvised organ accompaniment appear on Friday 11 June. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde one man’s desire to split the contrasting side of human nature, has disastrous results, and in one of the most influential films of the silent era, the annual fair descends on a

sleepy town in Germany where the arrival of the mysterious hypnotist prompts a series of grisly murders, in The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Rounding off the 2010 festival, on Saturday 12 June the almighty sound of three cathedral choirs are met with leading composer Gabriel Jackson talking about his approach to composition for choirs, with musical contributions from the choirs of Sheffield, Blackburn and New York (USA) Cathedrals. Gabriel Jackson’s music has been performed and broadcast worldwide and has won multiple awards. His music is being recorded with increasing frequency and in January 2010 Gabriel Jackson began his prestigious appointment as Associate Composer to the BBC Singers. Stewart Campbell,
Festival Director and Concerts Manager for the University, said: “I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to continue the creative partnership between the two institutions. This year’s programme of events encompasses many different art forms, combined with several inspirational performers; the Festival will undoubtedly be hugely beneficial to the University, Cathedral and the City of Sheffield.” The Very Reverend Peter Bradley, Dean of Sheffield Cathedral said “This is the second year of the partnership between the Cathedral and the University, and the result is a stunning programme full of quality and variety. We are proud in this way to make our distinctive contribution to the cultural life of the City of Sheffield.”
