SHEFFIELDERS MAKE A RUN FOR IT S6 MOTORS Local people are getting ready to show what sports they are, all in the name of charity. Hundreds have signed up to take part in Sheffield’s very own Hillsborough Park for the city’s Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday March 21. There will be two Sheffield Hillsborough Park Mile races, the first at 11.30 am and the second at 12 noon. For the more adventurous, there will be three and six mile events starting at 10 am and 11 am. Before each start, there will be a 15 minute warm up session, so entrants need to be there in good time. To enter, you can go online to www.sportrelief.

com and look up the Sheffield Hillsborough Park Mile. Joining the runners will be local sportsmen and women from table tennis, diving and volleyball, along with players from Sheffield Wednesday. And the entertainment will include stilt walkers, circus workshops, street dancers, a climbing wall and face painting. The Sport Relief Weekend is taking place across the nation from Friday arch 19 to Sunday March 21 and it’ll be three whole days of energy, entertainment and events to help the nation rise to the challenge. Cllr Sylvia Dunkley, Cabinet Member for

Culture, Sport and Tourism at Sheffield City Council said: “If you love to run, then this is really good chance to do what you love doing, and to raise money for an excellent cause at the same time. The choice of runs means that there’s something for all abilities and it will be a great day out.” Hundreds of thousands of people across the country will rise to the challenge at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile - and have a great time too – whether they do 1, 3 or 6 miles. Comic Relief will spend the money raised through sponsorship helping poor and vulnerable people both here in the UK and

across the world’s poorest countries. The whole thing kicks off on Friday March 19 when everyone gets active, raises cash and has a ball at home, at work or at school; before they settle down to watch a night of top Sport Relief telly on BBC One. Then there’ll be even more BBC radio, online and TV coverage throughout the weekend to keep everyone entertained. Then it’s the big one, the chance for the nation to come together and take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday March 21. THURSDAY 25th MARCH

MUM’S THE WORD TOP ROCK BAND Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world to honour special Mums who deserve a day of pampering for at least one day of the year! This Mothering Sunday (March 14th ) is the perfect opportunity to say a big ‘Thank you’ for all the amazing things your mum has done for you this year. So, why not spoil and indulge your number one Mum with a little help and guidance from Crystal Peaks. Ensure you start this special day for your Mum off in culinary style! Cook her up a treat for breakfast. Sainsbury’s has a wide selection of ideas- from Continental breakfast ingredients, such as sweet croissants, fruit jam, coffee and fresh juice, to more traditional English breakfast - with delicious

fine pork sausages, bacon and free range eggs. Create the perfect start to her Mother’s Day. As this is one day of the year your Mum is officially allowed to have a pampering why not head to Boots and choose from a selection of special scrubs, lotions and other potions, which will make her look and feel gorgeous! Perhaps she would like to indulge in a facial? You can find a variety of face-packs which will keep her happy and relaxed all day long. Or head straight to The Body Shop for supersmellies for the bath and/ or shower in a selection of fantastic scented flavours to really pamper her. Why not spoil your Mum to a new hair cut or style and make her feel really special. Loaf hairdressers have a team of experienced, professional hairdressers, stylists and colorists who will make your Mum feel and look a million dollars, without that sort of price tag! Call up or go into the salon in the centre, which is

located in the East Mall. If you want to treat your Mum but are not sure exactly what she may want, or just think she would prefer to choose her own gift, buy her vouchers from her favourite store. Whether she loves the clothes from Peacocks or would really appreciate some accessories from Next, you can get her perfect present from Crystal Peaks. Getting a little ‘Me’ time is a difficult thing to achieve, especially for busy Mums, however, it is crucially important. Even if she can just escape for half an hour a day, she will be a lot more relaxed. So why not encourage your Mum to escape to a quiet corner in your home with a new book. Pop into The Works and discover a variety of books that your Mum will no doubt love to delve into; perhaps you know her most treasured author, or wish to purchase her a factual book all about her favourite hobby or interest. The possibilities for a perfect Mother’s Day are endless at Crystal Peaks.

CRYSTAL PEAKS IS AWARDED PARK MARK Crystal Peaks shopping centre, Sheffield, has been awarded with a Park Mark for the safety and security of its car parks today (Thursday 4th March). The award was presented to Crystal Peaks centre

manager, Lee Greenwood at the centre, by DCI Tom Whitely from the South Yorkshire Police. The nationwide Park Mark® initiative rewards parking areas that the police consider to have particular measures in position in order to create a safer environment for drivers, passengers and vehicles. The Crystal Peaks car parks have been assessed to have such measures in place and to be both correctly managed and maintained. The centre offers over

2000 spaces that are spread across the centre’s 6 car parks- including the Retail Park. To ensure the car parks are as safe as possible, all the car parks are constantly monitored by CCTV and are regularly patrolled. Lee Greenwood commented: “We are so pleased to have been awarded this Park Mark for our safe and secure car parks. It is imperative that we continue to offer our shoppers a protected and safe environment when they visit.”

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 28 It was a grey, cold and damp Saturday and Rotherham United lost to local rivals Bradford – good job our collection at Don Valley Stadium got called off then! The Football League has a chosen charity each year and at various times throughout the year require all clubs in the league to participate in fundraising activities. This years charity is Help for Heroes, the national charity raising funds for wounded service men and women, and Rotherham United were required by the terms of their membership of league to allow a collection on Saturday. Two charities in one place is not a good recipe and Radio

Nightingale did not want to impede the fundraising for excellent work of Help for Heroes. So we have a new date, kids for a quid day on the 3 April when Rotherham United face Port Vale. Fundraising is always high on the agenda at Radio Nightingale as we have no guaranteed sources of income to cover any of our general running costs of licences, postage, stationery, etc. Even small amounts from individuals through our ongoing fundraising can make a real difference in this on-going task. The on-line shopping centre can be found at www.buy.at/radionightingale where you can use the Radio Nightingale webshop to avoid the traffic and search over 5 million products in one place. Plus you’ll be raising money for Radio Nightingale too and it doesn’t cost you anything additional to your purchases. The retailers give a donation from their profits to Radio Nightingale as a result of your shopping. There are over 150 retailers available in the webshop, which should just about cover anything you could need. The search engine is www.everyclick.

com/radionightingale where your searches to contribute to Radio Nightingale. Again there is no cost to you everyclick gives a donation from is monthly advertising profits on a pro-rata basis. So the more clicks Radio Nightingale gets the bigger the donation from everyclick. Our daily lottery is based upon the temperatures in six cities around the world. If your selection of numbers matches the correct sequence of all six numbers then you will win the top daily prize of £10,000. There are other prizes for matching 3, 4 and 5 numbers in the correct sequence. The lottery stake is £1 per line, per week, giving you four entries into the draw which is made daily Monday to Thursday. For businesses and organisations there are opportunities to sponsor programmes and advertise in our information booklets which are circulated around the hospital. Finances are tight in the current economic climate and there’s a limited amount of money available to give to charity, but please do support us if you can.

tire country will be one of renewal and reproduction. It is therefore an ideal time to ride on the back of the vibration and make a fresh start for yourself. You may already be planning your summer hols and soon we will all be looking forward to BBQ’s, festivals, trips to the coast, lazy Sunday afternoons in the beer garden and walks in the park. They are all sure to manifest because we pour our energy into them without even really thinking about it at this time of year. Why not be mindful though and direct your energy to abundance and joy also. You know by now that what you concentrate on manifests and what you believe to be true becomes real for you. So why not take the lead of all great athletes and do a dry run of the course. ‘See’ how you want the next

6 months to unfold and you will get the results you concentrate on. Feel the sunshine on your face and Feel the mutual love and support of those around you. See the spring lambs playing in the fields and See the smiles on the faces of those you love. Hear the birds singing and Hear the sound of laughter from and around you. As the animal kingdom finds a perfect mate see yourself with your perfect mate. As nature replenishes and we harvest and share the bounty, see your bank account full and share the joy of abundance. Instead of just Spring fever, get a little fresh start fever – in this moment you can create what happens next – whatever you want that to be.

FRESH START FEVER

There are a few delicate little flowers on the blossom tree in front of the house and although my partner has had to scrape ice of his car for the last few mornings, the presence of some sunshine has made me think that maybe this long snowy winter may be finally over. January brings with it infinite possibilities, resolutions and hope, yet for me springtime is when the year really begins. It is a time for rebirth, the time to have a good stretch and fling open the windows and let some air in. It is a frame of mind that affects you by default, and no one is exempt. Soon green shoots will be on all the trees, early daffodils and snowdrops will be poking their way through the thawing soil and the majority of the animal kingdom will be matching and hatching. The frequency of the en-

Ingredients: • 3 cups (375g/12 oz) self raising flour • 12 muffin cases • 1 cup (250g/8 oz) caster sugar • Muffin tin • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 cup (250ml/8 fluid oz) milk • 90g (3oz) butter, melted 1. Pre-heat oven to 210 C (415 F/Gas 6-7) Place muffin cases in muffin tin. Sift the flour into large bowl and add sugar. Make a well in the centre. 2. Mix together the eggs and butter and pour into the well all at once. Using a wooden spoon, stir until just mixed. Do not overbeat - the batter should be lumpy. 3. Spoon the mixture into the muffin holes. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden. Cool on a wire rack. Variations: Add a handful of blueberries or raspberries or choc chips to batter.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally Freeview Launches Retune Campaign in Sheffield 17 March retune for BBC channels

Freeview is launching an information campaign in Sheffield to remind viewers to retune on Wednesday, 17 March. Anyone receiving their signal from the Sheffield transmitter will need to adjust their digital TV equipment to continue watching BBC services. The retune is required to prepare local transmitters for the future rollout of free-to-air HD (high definition) channels. Starting on 3 March, the campaign will include on-screen messages on BBC digital channels, in-store information leaflets, plus newspaper and radio advertising. Most viewers find retuning their Freeview equipment straightforward and many do so regularly to ensure they are up to date with the latest channel line-up. If people do need further help they can visit www. tvretune.co.uk to download easy-to-follow retuning guides for the most popular Freeview equipment, or call the automated TV Retune advice line on 08456 051122. A video showing people how to retune is also available online. Sheffield retailers can also provide simple retune advice. The technical changes to the Sheffield transmitter will take place in the early hours of the morning of 17 March and are expected to be complete by 6am. All Freeview boxes, Freeview+ digital TV recorders, BT Vision or Top Up TV boxes, and digital TVs can be retuned at any point after this. Any Sheffield viewers who find they are missing channels are advised to retune equipment as soon as practicable on 17 March*. A few households on the fringes of current Freeview coverage may find they can no longer pick up the channels on their new frequency. Satellite, cable and analogue viewers are not affected. Sarah-Jane Gray, Retune Campaign Coordinator for Freeview, said: “Most Freeview viewers are used to retuning every now and again, and our campaign will help remind people to get ready for 17 March and offering advice to anyone who needs help on the day. This retune is required as part of the technical upgrade to make free high-definition TV channels available across Yorkshire.” * Viewers not able to retune on 17 March can do so anytime afterwards

COPLEY’S COLUMN ALBERT SNODGRASS THE TEST OF TIME A young boy was looking through the family album and asked his mother, “Who’s this guy on the beach with you with all the muscles and curly hair?” “That’s your father.” “Then who’s that old bald-headed fat man who lives with us now?” HOLDING THE BABY A woman got on a bus holding a baby. The busdriver said: “That’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen.” In a huff, the woman slammed her fare into the fare box and took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus. The man seated next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her what was wrong. “The bus driver insulted me,” she fumed. The man sympathised and said “Why, he’s a public servant and shouldn’t say things to insult passengers.” “You’re right,” she said. “I think I’ll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind.” “That’s a good idea,” the man said. “Here, let me hold your monkey.” EASY ENOUGH MISTAKE A man and a woman were having dinner in a fine restaurant. Their waitress, taking another order at a table a few paces away noticed that the man was slowly sliding down his chair and under the table, with the woman acting unconcerned.

Saturday was an amazing day for me, the highlight being my V.I.P. day at Hillsborough, home of my beloved football team, Sheffield Wednesday, kindly provided by this newspaper. My special guest for the day was the voice of beautiful Bramall Lane, my close friend of twenty five years, Gary Sinclair. What joy for Gary, to be at the home of the better of the two Sheffield teams. We were met at reception, shown to our reserved table for lunch and given a glass of bucks fizz, followed by a tour of the ground. I was pleased to renew my acquaintance with Steve Ellis, the club photographer for the past twentynine years. I first met Steve in the days of running my pub, Chaplin’s, in the early eighties. Gary was a bit reluctant to be photographed, due to his allegiance to the other team from Sheffield 2. After the tour we got stuck into a super lunch before taking our places in the director’s box to watch the game. Well known faces there included politicians Roy Hattersley and David Blunkett, Steve Bruce, Howard Wilkinson, and past Wednesday heroes, Don Megson, Billy Griffin, Johnnie Quinn and an old friend of mine, Tony Kay. I had a day out with Peter Swan a couple of weeks ago when he mentioned that he had not seen Tony Kay for over forty years and would like to see him. Peter and Tony were of course involved with David Layne in what was described as the fix, whereby they were convicted of throwing a game against Ipswich town, a game they were unlikely to win anyway. The newspaper that exposed them, The People, actually made Tony the man of the match on the day in question. If a team like Accrington Stanley were to

play Chelsea today, who could blame the Accrington players if to regain their win bonus, they had a few quid on Chelsea to win. I personally think that the three players involved, all pals of mine, were treated very unfairly. In order to make Peter Swan’s wish come true, I took Tony Kay to see him at his pub, The Mill, in Brimington, Chesterfield on Sunday, before Tony returned to his home in Southend. They were delighted to see each other, and it was a joy to go down memory lane with these two great footballers for a couple of hours. I took a photograph of them both outside Peter’s pub which is unique and featured here. Unfortunately David Layne was not there for this historic moment. I finished off this perfect Saturday with a visit to the Yew Tree at Coal Aston to see my favourite band, Junkyard Dog. I am pleased to report that the pub was heaving, confirming my view that success can be attained in these days of financial cramp on two fronts; quality entertainment and adequate advertising. I cannot stress too strongly that an advertisement

in this newspaper really does put bums on seats (if there are any seats) For the first time in my life, I really wanted Sheffield United to win on Saturday, as victory over Crystal Palace would have done Wednesday a big favour. Needless to say, they played terribly and duly lost, keeping my beloved Owls in the relegation spot. They have two more opportunities to help us out this week, with games against Peterborough, the result of which will be known at time of publication and fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers. I am not, however, holding my breath. However, on Saturday’s evidence, Wednesday are too good to go down and United are not good enough to go up, and so we will have the local derbies again next season. It grieves me to say this, but Doncaster are at present the best team in South Yorkshire, with Billy Sharp showing what a good player he is now he is getting some decent service at last, something he obviously wasn’t getting in his time at his home club at Bramall Lane.

Tony Kay & Peter Swan at The Mill in Brimington

The waitress watched as the man slid all the way down his chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the woman dining across from him appeared calm and unruffled, apparently unaware that her dining companion had disappeared. After the waitress finished taking the order, she came over to the table and said to the woman, “Pardon me, ma’am, but I think your husband just slid under the table.” The woman calmly looked up at her and replied firmly, “No he didn’t. He just walked in the door.”

The copper said, “What’s he like?” The little boy replied, “Beer and women!”

katherine jenkins Britain’s favourite singer and the world’s most successful classical crossover artist, the Welsh Mezzo Soprano Katherine Jenkins, will perform at Sheffield Arena on Friday 19th March 2010. Tickets are priced £56.20, £45.98, £38.32 & £25.54 (booking fee may apply). Over the past six years, Katherine has defined the ever popular ‘crossover’ genre. Whether it be taking to the stage with Darcey Bussell performing Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose in their acclaimed production Viva La Diva, to giving Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah a classical twist, Jenkins is one of most forward thinking, creative and progressive artists of her generation, bringing her timeless aura to millions of fans across the world. With Marilyn Monroe style glamour, she has the business

savvy of an opera Madonna and the humility and compassion that have made her everyone’s favourite girl next door. For this tour, Katherine will be joined by special guests, 2008 Britain’s Got Talent Finalists electric string quartet Escala. Tickets for Katherine’s Sheffield Arena concert are priced £47.50, £37.50 & £25 (booking fee may apply) available in person at the Arena Box Office, by phone on 0114 256 5656 or online at www. sheffieldarena.co.uk

Oprah Winfrey, Scarlett Johansson, Will Smith and Nicolas Cage have all had their dogs trained and balanced by US TV sensation Cesar Millan - and now you’ll be able to witness his talents first hand as he brings his enlightening and hugely entertaining live show to the UK for the first time. Cesar Millan – The Dog Whisperer Tour comes to Sheffield Arena on Sunday 21st March 2010. Best known from his four time Emmy-nominated hit US television show “The Dog Whisperer” airing in the UK exclusively on Nat Geo Wild, Cesar will wow dog-loving audiences across the UK and Ireland with his show Cesar Millan The Dog Whisperer UK Tour. From Sheepdogs to Schnauzers, Poodles to Pomeranians, Cesar Millan will have audiences spellbound as he shares his amazing insights on dog psychology and how people can inadvertently play a role in their dog’s “behavioural issues”. “What amazing places dogs are taking me to,” Millan says. “If

you had told me when I was growing up in Mexico that one day I would be going to the UK I don’t think I would have ever believed it. I rehabilitate dogs and train people, so to be given the chance to fly across the pond and share my talents, that help dog owners become calm and assertive pack leaders with their dogs, really helps me fulfill my vision of making the world a better place… one dog at a time.” Using his natural gifts as an educator and as an entertainer, Cesar uses state-of-the-art multimedia accompanied by some friendly pooches to illustrate his unique concepts and ideas. Cesar will have audiences seeing the world through their dog’s eyes and his “fulfillment formula” will change their relationships with their dogs forever. F1

MOTORS

SEASON PREVIEW by G Meister

The start of the 2010 F1 season is soon upon us and what a season it is shaping up to be, with changes to teams, drivers on the usual merry-goround, and radical alterations to the rules. The big headline is the return of 7 times world champion Michael Schumacher after 3 years in retirement. A return to Ferrari was imminent until he suddenly decided to go to what is now called Mercedes.

Ferrari were extremely disappointed that he did not return to them, given the legendary status he brought to the Italian giants. In team news, Toyota have pulled out of F1 despite building a promising team for the 2010 season, mainly because of disagreement with the new FIA policies. In the past Toyota have played a crucial part in many championship races by getting their cars into podium positions and

affecting the outcome of the championship battles between the top teams and drivers. Toyota have never been a top team but F1 may not be the same without them. Also the FIA opened the Championship to 12 teams instead of 10. New in this year are Hispania Racing Team also known as HRT, Lotus who have returned, and also Virgin have made a team to compete in the 2010 season, with a base nearby in Rotherham. As with any season many drivers leave and many come in. A shock departure is Räikkonnen, who has left Ferrari and has moved to rallying. Räikkonnen has been an influential character in the world of F1 as he has been one of the better drivers and his departure was a great surpirse. HRT have introduced a new face in Karun Chandhok and also

Lucas di Grassi has joined the F1 world. Kovalainen a previous driver of McLaren has admitted that he has got a lot to prove as over the last two seasons he has been disappointing for them.

Button has said that there is room for improvement on the McLaren car of which is entered into the championship this season. Most controversial amongst the new rules is the banning of refuelling cars mid-race. This means that teams have had to design new cars that can fit a bigger fuel tank into the car. This will make the cars heavier and slower, and lead to a complete change in pit-stop tactics as teams adjust to the new regulations. In conclusion this could potentially be a great season as many new factors are thrown into the mix - F1 legends returning, new teams, new drivers, no more refuelling. Next week the season kicks off with the Bahrain GP and we shall get a taster of what the season has in store.

NATIONAL NO SMOKING DAY - 10 MARCH 2010 Quitting smoking? Slimming World can help While many people have given up since Brits were banned from lighting up in public places nearly three years ago, there are still 11 million smokers in the UK. According to government figures, almost three-quarters of them would like to stop smoking, but often one of the biggest concerns is gaining weight if they do quit. And they have reason to worry as scientists at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, report that people who quit smoking are twice as likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within six years as continuing smokers, and up to 70 per cent more likely than non-smokers. The researchers suspect the increased diabetes risk comes from extra weight gain common in people who quit. The answer? The scientists say that would-be quitters should be offered advice on diet and exercise to avoid gaining weight. Local weight loss expert Lynne Riley who runs a Slimming World group in Eckington agrees: “Smoking acts as an appetite suppressant, and many smokers who try quitting turn to food for comfort. At Slimming World, we can help people to stop smoking without gaining weight by providing a healthy eating plan that won’t leave you hungry and a supportive group environment.”

Also where cigarettes may have previously been used as a meal ‘replacement’, for example instead of breakfast, then the addition of an extra meal per day may lead to weight gain. • Switching cigarettes for snacks. Food and snacks are sometimes used as a replacement for the physical handto-mouth action used when smoking. • Cravings. The ‘empty’ feeling which nicotine withdrawal can bring can feel similar to the feeling of a hunger pangs and so encourage you to eat more. But,” says Lynne, “weight gain needn’t be an unwanted side effect of stopping smoking. Anyone can be successful at both giving up smoking and maintaining a healthy weight if they get great support combined with regular activity and a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and low in sugar, salt and fat. “For anyone concerned about weight gain, a good place to start is joining a warm and supportive slimming group like Slimming World, where smokers can get help to start new healthy eating and lifestyle habits at the same time as quitting,” adds Lynne. “The motivational techniques that Slimming World members gain through shared experience to help them lose weight successfully can be just as There are several common effective if applied to smoking. factors associated with giving Strategies like setting a target, up smoking that can potentially deciding when you’re going to lead to weight gain: stop, writing a ‘for and against’ • Food is full of flavour again. list or keeping a diary are As taste buds come ‘alive’ extremely powerful when used again, many ex-smokers could in combination with a support find themselves eating more group to help with behaviour through a new-found enjoychange,” she adds.

the club in 2010, originally bosses intended to open on the old Arundel Street site but that would mean an extensive and time consuming rebuild. Gatecrasher is urging the city to get behind them and ‘Vote Yes’ for the new club and have created an online petition for messages of support for the new venue which they intend to submit to the council to back-up their planning proposals. Gatecrasher bosses hope to build a state-of the art venue like no other in the UK and intends to enlist the skills of celebrated international designer Callin Fortis from New York based Big Time design. Fortis is responsible for the award winning designs of the world’s most famous clubs including Crobar New York, Crobar Chicago, and the Cameo Theater in Miami. Fortis also designed Gatecrasher’s Birmingham club voted top UK club by dance music bible Mixmag. His clubs are revered the world over with fans including Paris Hilton, Harrison Ford, Lenny Kravitz, Cameron Diaz, George Clooney and Tommy Hilfiger. A Phase 1 drawing has been submitted details the layout of the venue which will include 4 different club rooms and a main auditorium designed for both DJs and live music. Fortis and his team at Big Team Design are currently progressing the finer details. The loss of Gatecrasher in

Sheffield sent shock-waves throughout clubland, no-one was hurt but dance music fans worldwide mourned the loss of a clubbing institution. Following the fire the club received over 5000 emails and letters of support. Club bosses vowed to return to their spiritual home as soon as possible and have spent the last three years trying to find a suitable location. An application for planning permission has been lodged with council and Gatecrasher is urging the city to get behind their plans. Simon Raine, MD of Gatecrasher, commented; “Gatecrasher hopes to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. We were devastated at the loss of the Sheffield club in 2007 and have been searching tirelessly for a location so we can return to our spiritual Sheffield home. What’s been heartening is all the support we’ve had from the city, we get emails daily asking us when we are returning to Sheffield and now it is finally a reality.” Since Gatecrasher launched in Sheffield in the mid-90s, it has played a significant role in the development of the city and has been previously been praised by council officials for its impact on the economy and tourism. The clubs contribution to Sheffield’s thriving nightlife and entertainment scene firmly placed the city on the International map creating major interest and inward investment. The impact the club has had on the city is staggering with over 8 million people attending Gatecrasher in Sheffield in over 10 years. A survey carried out in 2001 also found Gatecrasher to be the number one reason that students decided to study in Sheffield.

During Gatecrasher’s reign in the city, the club played host to the most spectacular club nights which are now immortalised in clubbing history. The club kick started a dance revolution and helped forge the careers of DJs including Judge Jules, Tiesto, Mauro Picotto and Armin Van Buuren. From humble beginnings to a world-conquering global club brand, Gatecrasher has continued to push boundaries and dominate dance music. It’s reputation as a flamboyant, individual and hedonistic brand continues to grow and the Gatecrasher name remains emblazoned in the heart and soul of clubbers throughout the world. The Gatecrasher lion has always sat proudly at the forefront of clubland, responsible for many of Sheffield’s never-to- be- forgotten events. With the launch of the new club hopes to define a new decade of clubbing . Simon Raine added; “The new site will exceed all expectations bolder, bigger and a lot more edgier than before. We want to build the best nightclub in the world that has always been our aim!.” Gatecrasher is looking to engage the city of Sheffield in the quest to launch its new club and is looking for suggestions and support from city dwellers. They also intend to work closely with residents, local police and Sheffield City Council, Simon added; “ Having worked as part of the community in Sheffield for over a decade, we are more than aware we need to work in close partnership with the residents, the local authority and police to address any potential issues before they arise. We are currently in close consultation with the relevant authorities to ensure that our policies around noise, anti-social behaviour and dispersal satisfy each party.” GATECRASHER IS URGING THE CITY TO ‘VOTE’ YES FOR THEIR PLANS TO RETURN TO THE CITY. A-DOOR- IT’S A ABLE! DATE! Two Door Cinema Club are 3 people with the help of technology and a thirst for anything quirky. If you were to pose the question, “Where do Two Door Cinema Club live?” and someone was to answer, “Why, Bangor!” That someone would only be 66.67% correct because Two Door Cinema Club are a Bangor/Donaghadee based electro pop band. At first an obvious absence in the rhythm department was humbly filled by an unadulterated Macintosh however the band have recently found a sticksman to beef up their live shows. Their music has been loosely compared to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene but without a definitive capacity to be pigeon-holed. Melodic vocals, which hail from all three members of the outfit, infuse with guitar riffs that have been described as “oceanic” and rhythm described as “pulsing”. They are signed to French record label Kitsuné Music, through which they released their debut album Tourist History. Trimble and Halliday first met whilst attending Bangor Grammar School. They met Baird when he was trying to get off with girls they knew. In 2007, Two Door Cinema Club was formed, and following an increased interest in their music on their MySpace page, they gave up their university places and began work on studio material. An EP “Four Words To Stand On” was released in January 2009 and was positively received by critics. A number of music blogs featured articles about the band and their popularity increased. nomination for the Kerrang! Best British newcomer award along with fellow rockers Gallows. During 2008, the band supported The Audition on a UK tour, followed by headlining the Klub Kerrang event at London’s KOKO. The following year the band’s debut album, “Take Off Your Colours,” was released, and went straight to album chart position 25, accompanied by a headline tour across the UK, including a sold out date at the London’s Astoria, shortly before it’s closure. In March 2009, the boys announced a UK arena tour with Fall Out Boy, as well as a full set of USA dates playing as part of the Warped Tour, and also as part of the Australian Soundwave festival. In May 2009, they headlined the Slam Dunk Festival at Leeds University. Their second album, “Hold Me Down,” was released on January 11th this the lesser explored musical territories. reviews by presley artist: Cheryl Cole single: Parachute release date: March 15th

So much controversy! So much hype! So many tabloid headlines! Is it all a load of bulls**t? Yes I think most of it is. It’s really sad that the music industry along with most of the other arts is mainly based on sensationalism. The dumbing down of it all and the need for there to be a story behind the music seems now to be everything. The so called “fame” part of it is now more important than the music itself. This has to change! If it doesn’t then we might as well just have a Top 40 Fame chart every week instead of what we have now (which aint much different come to think of it). So let’s forget about all the footballer rubbish and concentrate on the music. Cheryl Cole is having huge success, just as much as Girls Aloud have? That is totally down to what I’ve just talked about. It isn’t down to the music. This single is better than the previous one ‘Fight For This Love’, it is far better in fact but………….. its still a fairly average song sold on the subject matter that people are reading into the lyrics, concerning what is going on in the papers. It’s all so autobiographical, but is it? These songs were written not just the other week, they’ve been written a while ago (obviously). So the public are getting sucked into the hype. Hype shouldn’t make something successful, but sadly that is the world we live in right now. If you want my advice, I’d urge you to wait until new Girls Aloud material surfaces, because Cheryl’s album is very, very average.

artist: Muse single: Resistance release date: Out Now

Along with Kasabian, Drag’s band of last year by a huge margin! ‘Uprising’ was quite simply a stunning single. This song is the title track off their latest album. It starts with their trademark ethereal opening with plush piano and subtle soaring vocal. Then as the song picks up it goes into a backing vocal punky mid-eight section and then ploughs straight into classic Muse chorusing. It’s full of that classic Muse feel, instantly recognisable and huge in its production. This song may not be as brilliant as ‘Uprising’ but then what could really? Its punky backing vocal parts are what makes this song stand out from other Muse tracks and I love those bits. This will appeal to Muse fans obviously, it may not win them many new fans………………but do they really need them anyway!

artist: Sugababes single:Wear my Kiss release date: Out Now

This is getting a tad ridiculous now! This band are not the Sugababes anymore. No original band members left. It was always precarious after the first of the trio leaving. But as soon as the brilliant singer Kiesha left late last year the Sugababes can’t really be the Sugababes anymore. But no!..........the record company are intent on pushing the brand as much as they can. This is (as always with the Sugababes) a really decent pop song. But for the first time in the Sugababes career, the vocal recognition has now gone. Obviously that was bound to happen, but now they definitely do not sound like the Sugababes anymore, this could be any number of girl bands singing this tune. I can see this being close to the end for this particular brand.

ALL ARTISTS AND AGENTS MUST READ THIS We have been working hard to create a facility that will give all artists a chace to sound as close to the original track as possible. Within the next 2 weeks we will have the best backing track facility available and it will be world class. I would actually go as far as saying there is nothing available that comes near to this and any artist working with backing tracks will be blown away by the quality. These backing tracks sound EXACTLY as the original and they are real instruments not synthesised or sampled. These are genuine backing tracks not karaoke with fade out. NOW FOR THE MOST AMAZING

SASSY DUO Hi Readers Yes it’s me again looking at some of the artists we have on in our clubs, some good, some bad. This week I went down to Ecco club to see another two girl duo called “Sassy”. Now I’ve seen them advertised in the Mercury quite a few times, but never had the

SHEFFIELD CITY HALL IS ONE OF THE BEST IN EUROPE Sometimes I wonder if we realise just how lucky we are in Sheffield. I first went to the City Hall in 1972 and it was here that I encountered the Dutch progressive rock band Focus. Some 38 years later I’ll be sharing the same platform with him at The Royal Concertgebouew in Amsterdam for the third time. Over the years I’ve seen some fantastic bands and orchestras

BIT. You can download them in the key to suit your voice. Gone are the days when you have to get someone to mess around with the track and they don’t quite sound right. Every track you can imagine will be available and constantly updated to give you the chance to perform the very latest releases. During the time that X Factor and Britain’s got Talent are being broadcast the tracks will immediately be available for download in bundled discount packages. Access to this facility is via the new Mercury website as www.mercurynewspaper. co.uk which will be released very soon.

STAR STUDDED CHARITY SHOW Award Winning and former international male vocalist Lee Summers presents an evening of star studded entertainment in aid of BASE9 (a chesterfield based organisation who support children and young adults with learning disabiities.), The National Autistic Society and numerous other local charities and organisations. This event is in association with South Yorkshires premier entertainment Newspaper ‘THE MERCURY’ and held at one of Derbyshire most prestigious entertainment venue’s, The Winding Wheel, Chesterfield on Tuesday 16th March 2010 - Show Starts 7.30pm The Show will be featuring live performances from;

chance to see them for myself. I did miss their first spot, so I had a little word with some of the people in the Club to see what they thought of the girls. After all it’s the people in the Club that makes or breaks that artist that night. Everybody I seemed to talk to said that the two girls were very good. So now it was up to me to decide when they do their second spot. But first I think it’s nice to know a bit of background about the artist(s). So you know me - Nosey Paul, I went and had a chat with the girls to find out. They are called Amy Foster and Debbie Adkins. Now ‘Sassy’ was formed six and

a half years ago by Debbie and Amy joined the duo two years ago. they do quite a variety of songs from the 70’s i.e: Red Light spells Danger - Billy Ocean to Lady Ga-Ga. I must admit they put on an amazing show and their harmonies and dance routine was brill. It is as if they were meant to be together.

there and I’ve also seen shows and comedians etc. On Sunday I played at the Yorkshire Area Brass Band championships held at the St Georges Hall Bradford and I have to tell you it’s not in the same league as our City Hall. In fact I’ve played in most of the major concert halls in this country and I have to say that it’s the best, with one possible exception and that’s the Royal Albert Hall which is awesome. I find it hard to believe that there are many people in the Sheffield and the surrounding area that have never been there and I would recommend you remedy

that as soon as you can. We take things for granted and become complacent when something is on our own doorstep. It would be a shame for anyone that likes music if they were to die without hearing the wonders of a full symphony orchestra or the sheer sound and might of the City Hall organ. Personally it gives me a lift whenever I walk into the auditorium and playing there is fantastic. It’s not just the hall. the backstage area is great and the memorial hall at the rear of the main hall is superb for smaller events. This isn’t an advert by the way. Having

recorded some material. One of which was “Suspicion” which reached Number 1 on the internet charts.. Amy Foster:- First got into performing when she was two and she started disco dance lessons; which helped her along to be a qualified dance teacher. I might go along and see if she can show me some good dance moves - or perhaps not! She has a load of experience grounded from theatre work, singing and dancing in musicals from an early age. She first started in Clubland with the band called ‘Ghost’ 6 years ago.

to girls readers; which in my opinion is nice to know. Well I must say I think the girls put on an excellent show all round and would not hesitate to go and see them again. Oh, and Debbie and Amy it was a pleasure to meet you and I hope we still keep in touch. Good Luck for the future girls. Well readers that’s all from me this week. Oh and by the way I don’t just go out to see female duos. I go and see all artists and if in my opinion if they are good I will do a write up on them. That’s all from me this week. Happy Reading

Cheltenham Preview

The racing at the Festival is as competitive as it gets. Everyone wants to win at Cheltenham so let the fun begin!

There are just nine days to go now. Even so, with multiple entries for many horses a long range preview like this has to be prefaced with a warning to punters to check for non-runners.This week I will preview Tuesday and Wednesday in greater depth than Thursday and Friday which I will cover in more detail next week. I have tried to go for value in my selections. Tuesday 1.30 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle: If he lines up for this Dunguib, who won last year’s Festival Bumper and is something of a machine, has a favourite’s chance and should win. However, he is also entered for the Champion Hurdle and could go there. Also he has some decent horses in opposition, notably Get Me Out Of Here, Puyol and Some Present, so whether he is value at the current odds-on is very much open to question. The value lies withthe unbeaten Get Me Out Of Here. His odds will tumble if Dunguib goes for the Champion Hurdle. Some Present has an each way shout. 2.05 ArkleNovices’ Chase: The (long)shortlist here is: Citizen Vic; Long Run; Riverside Theatre; Shakervilz; Sizing Europe; Somersby; The Nightingale and Woolcombe Folly. I am taking on Captain Cee Bee because his jumping could be suspect under the pressure of a truly-run championship race. I like Somersby’s attitude so he is the selection, but dangers abound. 2.40 William Hill Trophy Chase A nightmare of a race – leave the race alone as a betting proposition. There are still 85 intended entrants, any one of whom could win on their day. However, if you absolutely must have a bet, three against the field are Coe (ran well at Doncaster on Saturday), Nenuphar Collonges and Skippers Brig. Skippers Brig is the selection. He had a “sighter” at Cheltenham in December, running well enough then to finish third, and might have been laid out for this.

3.20 Champion Hurdle Dunguib will be very dangerous if he lines up here(definitely have at least a “saver” on him). Punjabi has to have a great shout too, as do Solwhit, Medermit and Go Native. However the selection is Khyber Kim who has an equally good chance and is still improving. 4.00 Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase Another race to avoid as a betting proposition. A New Story ran well in Ireland over the weekend and gets the vote ahead of Cornish Sett, Monkerhostin and a host of others. Enda Bolger has “farmed” this race in recent years and has several entries again this year, including the forecast favourite Garde Champetre. 4.40 David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle Carole’s Legacy (Nap) is top rated for this one. Argento Luna will be dangerous if returning to form and Voler La Vedette also has a good chance. Wednesday 1.30 NH Chase Challenge Cup Fabalu is unexposed over fences and gets the vote ahead of: Any Currency; Cruchain; Far More Serious and Knighton Combe, all of whom have perfectly respectable chances. Best of the Irish is Pandorama. 2.05 Neptune Investmant Management Novices’ Hurdle The suggestion is Fionnegas (Nap). He ran well behind Dunguib in the Deloitte Hurdle which was run in a really fast time. 2.40 RSA Chase I am taking a chance here on David Pipe’s The Package. He has run well on his last 2 starts and seems to be improving. Pipe’s other entry Seven Is My Number is respected but he has to bounce back from a poor showing last time. 3.20 Champion Chase Master Minded did his best ever speed figure last time out and will be hard to beat. However there may be more to come from the unexposed Kalahari King and he gets the vote as he represents

AT THE DOGS... QUEEN MOTHER MEMORIAL CUP

On Sunday 14th March Owlerton Stadium holds its special Mothers Day meeting. Racing starts at 12.30 p.m. with 13 open races featuring the best greyhounds from all over the country running over various distances. The highlight of this special meeting is the Final of The Owlerton Bookmakers Queen Mother Memorial Cup Final run over 660 metres. The stadium receive special permission from The Queen to host this race annually. There is free admission and race cards cost just £2.50. This will be a day out for all the family. For more information visit www.owlertonstadium.co.uk

FISHING

better value. From over the water Big Zeb, Golden Silver, Sizing Europe and Tranquil Sea will all be dangerous. 4.00 Coral Cup Nine days to go and only 122 left in the race -leave it alone! If you really must have a go the suggestion is Andytown. From across the Irish Sea Chicago Grey and C’Est Ca will be dangerous. 4.40 Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap The race title says it all. Minimum stakes here (if any). The selection is Ultimate. 5.15 Champion Bumper Al Ferrof is the selection. Best of the Irish looks to be Shot From The Hip. Of the others Dare Me, Made In Time, Carpincho and Back At The Ranch look to be the main dangers. Selection Summary; Tuesday 1.30 Get Me Out Of Here 2.05 Somersby 2.40 Skippers Brig 3.20 Khyber Kim/Dunguib (if present) 4.00 A New Story 4.40 Carole’s Legacy (Nap) Wednesday 1.30 Fabalu 2.05 Fionnegas (Nap) 2.40 The Package 3.20 Kalahari King 4.00 Andytown 4.40 Ultimate 5.15 Al Ferrof Thursday and Fridays selections will be published next week when more will be known about running plans. Best of luck with your punting. Remember to keep your stakes low as the racing is ultra-competitive and finding winners is very difficult.

FOOTBALL - MILLERS NEWS

LOCAL SPORT NEWS

LATE GOAL DEFEATS MILLERS Rotherham United slipped to a second consecutive defeat after a late strike by James Hanson gave Bradford a 2-1 victory, just after Adam Le Fondre had levelled with an injury time penalty. In a closely contested Yorkshire derby, Michael Flynn had given the Bantams the lead but Le Fondre looked to have saved a point after a late penalty. Bradford then went straight up the other end and after a Bullock corner, Hanson headed in the winner. Ronnie Moore made just one change form the midweek defeat at Rochdale with Pablo Mills replacing the injured skipper Ian Sharps at centre half. The Millers started well, pressing the visitors back into their own half and were unfortunate not to take the lead on seven minutes. Kevin Ellison’s deep cross to the back post found Nicky Law, who drove his shot goalwards but Matt Glennon pushed the ball away at his near post. On nine minutes the visitors threatened when a dangerous cross by Simon Ramsden almost caught out Andy Warrington at his near post, but Mark Lynch was on hand to clear in the nick of time. This gave the visitors confidence and they soon looked dangerous again when Steve Williams looped a header onto the roof of the net from 12 yards out. On 14 minutes it was Bradford who again looked likely to score. It was obvious when the teams lined-up that there was a height advantage in favour of City, and they looked to exploit it when Bullock’s corner was headed back by Williams, but Hanson volleyed over from 12 yards under pressure from the Millers defence. Despite City’s good start it was Millers who missed the best chance of the game so far. A corner by Law found the head of Nick Fenton whose header was LOCAL SPORT NEWS

cleared off the line, the rebound looped to Gavin Gunning but his header cannoned off the bar. Glennon had a rush of blood on 38 minutes when he came hurtling out of his area following a long punt by Fenton, luckily for the Bantams ‘keeper his defence helped him out after he missed the ball completely, with Adam Le Fondre lurking for the Millers. After a cagey opening to the second half Bantams’ midfielder Flynn tried his luck from fully 30 yards but Warrington always had it covered, allowing the ball to drift wide. City took the lead just after the hour mark. Adam Bolder broke clear down right, shrugging off the challenge of Gunning, before crossing perfectly into the path of Flynn who slid the ball beyond Warrington. The Millers struggled to impose themselves after the goal, creating very few scoring opportunities. Ellison came closest in the 74th minute when he latched onto a knockdown just inside the area, but when stretching for the ball he couldn’t get any power into the shot and the ball trickled wide. That spurred the Millers into life with sub Marcus Marshall having a trio of headers in quick succession. First from a Josh Walker corner Marshall powered in a header which was scrambled off the line, the re-bound fell to Marshall again and his second header was smuggled clear to Walker who drilled in another cross, this time Marshall headed over from eight yards out. With nine minutes remaining the Millers had Warrington to thank for keeping them in the game. O’Brien went on a marauding run down the right taking on Lynch before shooting across Warrington only for the ‘keeper to get a hand on the ball to save low down. The Millers missed a glorious chance to equalise in the 87th minute. Walker found Marshall on the right; the on loan winger took on his man and pulled the ball back to Danny Harrison who blazed over from 10 yards.

ISSUE 839

Just when it seemed like the Millers were heading for defeat, a header into area by Ellison struck the arm of Flynn and the referee gave a penalty. Le Fondre stepped up to coolly convert past Glennon to equalise. Then with the last kick of the game Bullock drilled in a corner which was headed in at the back post by Hanson, to send the away supporters into raptures.

Late goal frustrates Ronnie Ronnie Moore bemoaned his team’s concentration after a James Hanson header secured a 2-1 win for Bradford and condemned the Millers to their second consecutive defeat. The Millers trailed to a Michael Flynn opener on the hour but levelled in stoppage time through an Adam Le Fondre penalty, only for Hanson to head in with virtually the last kick of the game. “I thought we had got out of jail with the penalty,” said Ronnie after the game. “It is then the last kick of the game, we need to be professional and just deal with it but we didn’t and that is two games now at set plays when the same guy has been done. It was absolutely criminal. One person has switched off, everyone else has done their job, the lad has had three yards in the area, which is just rank bad defending. “I know we weren’t brilliant today but we had decent chances. There were times during the game when we played some decent stuff, and with some of the chances we had I think it was harder to miss. If one of those chances go in then you go on and win the game.” Josh Walker made his home debut for the Millers and Ronnie was impressed with the midfielder’s contribution: “Josh got on the ball and passed it. He will give it away now and again but that is because he wants to slow us down, pass it and do the right things,” he added. “I think overall we shaded the game with the chances that we had. If we convert them we win the game.”

The Steelers had a mixed weekend of results, taking full points against leagueleaders Coventry Blaze on Friday night, but losing after overtime and penalties in Nottingham on Saturday. Despite the Blaze outshooting their hosts it was the Steelers who took the lead in the first period with a goal from Jason Hewitt in the 12th minute. Coventry soon equalized however with a goal from Greg Owen at 13:21. In the second period it was Jeff Legue who renewed the Steelers’ one-goal lead, but just after the halfway point Derek Campbell leveled the scores once again. After Legue’s goal Coventry forward Greg Chambers was ejected from the game on a match penalty for Abuse of

an Official, meaning he also missed their game against Cardiff over the weekend. The Steelers’ game-winning goal came from Doug Sheppard, who fired home a goal which the Blaze could not answer. Saturday’s game at the NIC saw the Steelers’ five game winning streak broken, but not without a fight. The opening period alone saw 44 penalty minutes awarded, and in just over 10 minutes of play the Panthers had a two goal lead, Gascon and Galbraith scoring for the home side. It wasn’t until late in the second period that Joey Talbot and Jeff Legue evened things up for the Steelers, but in the third period the Panthers took the lead again with a goal from David Clarke. During the third period the Steel-

ers out-shot the Panthers 14-5, but only managed one goal as Jason Hewitt took the game into overtime with a goal at 56:32. After a tense five minute period of sudden death overtime the game went to a penalty shootout, Jade Galbraith scoring the only goal to give Panthers the win. The Foxes arrived at Hillsborough as favourites for this top against bottom clash but the Owls upset the formbook as goals either side of half time from Leon Clarke sealed three crucial points. Alan Irvine made four changes from the side that lost at Reading last time out as Darren Purse, Jermaine Johnson, Tommy Miller and Clarke all made the starting line-up. Johnson’s return in particular was welcome given the winger’s lightening pace and ability to conjure something from nothing but it was Clarke that made the first impression, firing a snapshot that Chris Weale parried to safety before the big man hammered the Owls into an early lead. With just six minutes on the clock, Darren Potter’s ball found its way to the former Wolves man, who blasted a fierce angled drive into the top corner. The Owls were buoyed by that perfect start but Leicester recovered well as the contest unfolded, with Lloyd Dyer looking dangerous down the left flank. The wideman chipped an accurate feed to Paul Gallagher on the 15minute mark and the striker’s header was not too far over the crossbar. Leicester went closer still ten minutes later when Martyn Waghorn drilled a low shot goalwards but Lee Grant delved into the top drawer to produce a quality save at his near post. But the visitors suffered a blow on 31 minutes when goalkeeper Weale was withdrawn with what appeared to be a facial injury and Conrad Logan took the gloves for the first time this season. But the Owls failed to test the Irishman for the remainder of the first half, although more crucially, Wednesday held on to their lead as they headed down the tunnel. Frank Simek started the second period in place of Tommy Spurr, who took a blow to the head just before the whistle that left the defender concussed. Versatile loanee Eddie Nolan switched across to left back to accommodate Simek. Johnson gave Nolan a scare two minutes in but the keeper reacted well to turn the Jamaican’s daisycutter round the post. Johnson was at the centre of the action moments later, ar-

Wednesday continued to play positive football and got their reward on the hour and again Johnson was at the hub. Tudgay sent the wideman scampering down the right and Johnson’s cross found Clarke in space to applying the finishing touch to the best move of the match. Leicester replied with Dyer sending in a vicious drive that Grant tipped expertly over the bar before Miller rolled a teasing shot wide at the other end. Johnson departed to a standing ovation with 20 minutes to go, with Luke Varney entering the action. But it was the Foxes that threatened next as Waghorn bore down on goal only to be denied by a vital last-ditch challenge by Nolan. The visitors pushed forward in the closing stages but rarely looked like scoring as Wednesday held firm to turn the screw on a string of sides locked in the demotion dogfight. Alan Irvine was lifted by his team’s performance in the 2-0 win over Leicester City at Hillsborough on Saturday. The Wednesday manager saw a goal in each half from Leon Clarke secure a vital three points in the battle against relegation and Irvine was delighted by his side’s response following last week’s heavy defeat at Reading. “It was a great response to what was a very poor performance last week. It was the kind of response that we’ve talked about all week and it was a response that we hoped we were going to get. It’s one thing to respond in the right way on the training ground but it’s something else to respond on the pitch and I am delighted about the way the lads went about their jobs from the start of the game,” the Owls boss said after the match. It was a great start for Wednesday as they stormed into a sixth minute lead when Clarke smashed the ball home from an acute angle. “Getting the first goal in this division is a really important thing and we actually had one or two efforts before the goal, even though that came early in the game,” Irvine said. “It was great to get the reward for the way that we started the game but then we probably put ourselves under a bit of pressure in the mid-part of the first half by giving away too many free kicks and from that we found ourselves on the back foot a little bit. “In the second half I felt that we were a bit more disciplined in the way that we closed our opponents down and we didn’t concede so many free kicks. As a result of that we didn’t find ourselves getting pinned back for any length of time.” Irvine admitted that he had deliberated over more changes to his starting eleven but eventually decided on four replacements in Clarke and Tommy Miller as well as skipper Darren Purse and winger Jermaine Johnson returning from injury. “Even up to yesterday morning I had a number of different teams in my mind but I settled on that one and I thought the lads did extremely well,” Irvine insisted. “Tommy Miller played really well. My one fear about him was whether he would be fit enough to play the whole game because we had JJ who I thought probably wouldn’t last the game and then we had Tommy who I didn’t think would finish the game so huge credit to him. I thought Leon may have a problem finishing the game too because none of those players has played much recently so it was great that Tommy could finish the game, especially with JJ and Leon starting to cramp. Tommy Spurr had to be taken off at half time so I needed Tommy Miller to finish the match.” Spurr was taken to hospital to be assessed having sustained delayed concussion from a blow to the head in the first half and the manager will be hoping that the left back can resume training ahead of Tuesday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion. Meanwhile Irvine praised goal hero, Clarke, and the influence of returning skipper, Purse. “Leon has terrific ability, he

ISSUE 839

can finish with both feet and he has been training really well. I was hoping that he would take that onto the pitch and he did. He had a volley in the first few seconds of the game which was a terrific strike and if it wasn’t straight at the goalkeeper he would have had problems. His first goal was really well taken and the second was really well made by Jermaine Johnson. Leon has got terrific ability and, like all the players, he needs to show that consistently between now and the end of the season. “Darren is a leader and he has done tremendously well since we’ve been here. In all the games he’s played (since I’ve been at the club), he’s probably had half a game at Barnsley where he made a couple of mistakes but since then he’s been faultless, so that was a huge bonus for us to get Darren back.”

BLADES BAD AWAY RUN OF FORM CONTINUES United’s dismal luck away from home continued on the long trip to Crystal Palace. Alan Lee’s first half goal ensured that United are still waiting for an away win in 2010. Under Paul Hart, Palace looked revitalised and the Blades took the brunt of the new-manager syndrome. Quinn returned to the starting XI, replacing frontman Camara, who dropped to the bench, which gave boss Blackwell the option of either 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 systems. New Palace boss named former Blade Derry as his captain after the midfielder shook off a back problem. Wearing black shirts, white shorts and socks, it did not take long to establish that United would play with Ward and Cresswell in attack, although the visitors could not repeat the impressive start of the previous week. Ambrose, Palace’s top scorer this season, was prominent in the early play. He had a free-kick blocked and then almost took advantage when Nosworthy’s back-pass hit Bartley, but the young loanee quickly recovered. The home team’s defence also displayed a lack of cohesion on a number of occasions in the opening 15 minutes but Speroni was not totally exposed and Palace survived when Ward was adjudged offside following Cresswell’s probing. It was Palace, though, who grasped the advantage at the halfway point in the half. A deep cross by Butterfield from the right dissected the Blades

Page 39

defence and LEE edged in front of Morgan to divert the ball beyond Bunn from close range. Bunn needed treatment moments later and was fit to continue but United were struggling to find a rhythm, particularly with Ward and Cresswell not getting any change out of Hill and Davis. Quinn was busy in the midfield and the visiting side’s best chance of the first half was following a rare free-kick award on 41 minutes. From a Yeates delivery, Ward added a flick at the front post and Speroni just gathered before Cresswell arrived. Three minutes of stoppage time was announced and both sides finished the half with ten men. Both Bartley and Lee trotted off down the tunnel early to receive treatment after a clash of heads. Bartley and Lee reappeared for the second period, both sporting bandages covering their head wounds, but the first notable action after the break was a booking for Derry, for a tackle from behind on Cresswell. The best opportunities in the early part of the second half fell for the home side. Ambrose anticipated Derry’s header but the winger couldn’t beat Bunn and then Lee lifted the ball over the top after Carle’s cross had evaded everyone and reached the back post. Camara was introduced with more than half hour to go, at the expense of Quinn with Ward moving to a wide role. The referee’s failure to spot Lee’s elbow on Montgomery was the catalyst for a number

of flashpoints which resulted in Davis, Bartley and Williamson cautioned in the space of a few minutes. Andrew headed over an Ambrose free-kick for the home side and a frustrated Williamson was withdrawn with 20 minutes to go, Harper taking over in the heart of the midfield. The last contribution of Yeates, who was replaced by Evans soon after, was to swing in a cross which Derry headed into his goalkeeper’s arms, but United were on the front foot going into the final ten minutes. Bunn did well to hold a longrange free-kick from Ambrose whilst the Blades poured forward and drilled balls into the box late on. Palace did all they could to frustrate the visitors late on, including wasting time with substitutions and N’Diaye picking up a booking. Camara lashed a shot wide in the last minute of normal time and Evans saw an effort blocked and other drift wide. Bartley and Morgan both spent more time in Palace’s box than their own late on but United were unable to claw back that all-important equaliser. Palace: Speroni, Clyne, Hill, Derry, Ambrose (Hills 90), Carle (Scannell 90), Andrew (N’Diaye 87), Lee, Butterfield, Ertl, Davis. Unused: John, Lawrence, Djilali, Mann. Blades: Bunn, Montgomery, Morgan, Nosworthy, Yeates (Evans 78), Williamson (Harper 70), Cresswell, Ward, Bartley, Quinn (Camara 58), Kallio. Unused: Bennett, Taylor, Stewart, Seip.

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton

If only….

When we look back at the football played during the 2009/2010 season, we will see a whole host of ‘what could have beens’. For example, if Arsenal had an accomplished striker with goalscoring pedigree, rather than a not-so-great Dane who couldn’t hit a barn door, they may have won the title. Or if the England national set up consisted of a professional and committed crop of elite athletes, rather than resembling an illdisciplined traveling circus, we could have won the World Cup.

But most importantly, if only Sheffield United had a style of play that could be readily adapted to away games as well as home, the Blades could have reached the Championship play-offs. This comment of course implies that I don’t think we will. Considering the points difference that separates us from the top six, as well as many of our rivals having games in hand on us, it is beginning to look like an uphill task. I think it can be taken as read that the injuries have played their part in our inconsistency, but this is not the sole reason. The fact that we lack a coherent style or form to our play is just as important. Regardless of fans opinions of the quality in our squad, the bottom line is that they are all professional footballers who have been trained to play the game by professional coaches since they were young. They can pass, they can tackle, and they can shoot, despite none of this being on show on Saturday. It is fair to assert that there is greater quality in our squad than that of say, Doncaster. Yet somehow they manage to deploy a consistent brand and style of football, wherever they play. They don’t always win, but when they lose, they do so sticking to their footballing principles. I wouldn’t swap our overall situation for theirs, nor am I a Blackwell knocker, but we need to re-discover our identity.
