SUCCESS FOR SHEFFIELD IN UK CITY OF CULTURE BID S6 MOTORS The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced today that Sheffield has made the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2013 title. This follows an intense bid process throughout 2009 involving Sheffield City Council, CreativeSheffield and Sheffield’s Culture Board. The other three cities shortlisted are Birmingham, Derry and Norwich, meaning that Sheffield will fly the flag for North of England. The aim of the UK City of Culture programme is to encourage the use of culture as a catalyst for making cities great places to live, to visit

and to invest in. It has been noted that the winner could have the opportunity to host the likes of The Brit Awards and The Turner Prize bringing major economic and reputational benefits to the city. At the same time the Sheffield bid focused heavily on encouraging the city’s people and communities to get more involved in culture – to take part as creators, makers, artists and performers. Leader of Sheffield City Council, Councillor Paul Scriven said the announcement was the result of months of hard work: “What fantastic news for the city. To be shortlisted to the final four just underlines the

strength of our bid and Sheffield’s future commitment to the arts and culture. This is a proud day for Sheffield and Sheffielders and I hope our city will be honoured with being named the UK’s first ever city of culture. “This news is hot on the heels of being named as a Candidate Host City for England’s World Cup bid and a great track record over the last 12 months of hosting some of the biggest and best names in entertainment from U2 and BBC Sports Personality of the Year to home grown successes such as Music City, Galvanise and Grin up North. Well done Sheffield!” Councillor Sylvia Dunk-

ley, Sheffield’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, added: “Sheffield is a melting pot of cultural creativity and innovation. From our diverse range of performers within our communities, such as the sword dancers in Grenoside and Handsworth, to our nationally recognised theatres complex, this is a city that lives, breathes and makes culture. “We want to prove that in Sheffield, culture is not limited to a select few, but is something which we all take part in every day. Whether it’s through our superb music, our popular literary festival, our celebration of the city’s metalwork

heritage or excellent exhibitions at our galleries and museums, we want Sheffield to be a city where people see culture as part of their everyday experience, and winning the City of Culture Bid would help us achieve this.” Sean Bean, who is from Sheffield and has excelled in the international cultural realm, endorses the Sheffield bid: “I am delighted to support Sheffield’s

bid to become the first UK City of Culture in 2013. Sheffield boasts an impressive array of cultural facilities, events and celebrations and is renowned for its diverse festivals around the city. As a city that prides itself on its history of creating culture, Sheffield has the passion and the capacity to make it happen. My message to the city is good luck with the shortlist, I think you’ve got the ability to go all the way and

win it!” The four shortlisted cities will be required to submit a final bid to DCMS at the end of May 2010 and the winner will be announced in the summer. The Sheffield bid team will now work closely with the City and DCMS to show that Sheffield has what it takes to make the UK proud if named the first UK City of Culture in 2013.

Starters Orders By: “Timelord” Welcome to my inaugural column of what I hope will soon become a frequent and successful feature in the Mercury. Just around the corner now is the annual renewal of the greatest spectacle on earth for all true racing fans – the Cheltenham Festival. This week I am kicking off by outlining my method and approach to punting and next week I will provide a preview for all the major races at the Festival (and perhaps a few of the handicaps if column space permits) I rely on speed ratings calculated from race times, weights carried, going allowances and distances between finishers. I have studied race times for longer than I care to remember now, based on the (not unreasonable) presumption that the fastest horse ought to win the race (oh, if only it were so easy!). When I started to follow racing I quickly became disillusioned with newspaper tipsters who seemed only to select horses at the head of the betting (and ones that often were beaten). Becoming frustrated with second and third place finishers I started to look for an alternative way of assessing relative merits of the runners. I started to use well-known time-based systems but then branched out into doing my own ratings after discovering the adjustments that some of them made to their ratings after the event. My current records cover virtually every race run in Britain and Ireland since the year 2000 that can be rated (and quite a lot from France). I use racecourse standard times to set a benchmark and then calculate a speed rating for each contestant in the race. I use a consistent system of going allowances for the various different ground condition descriptions and adjust the resulting figures for weight carried and distances between the horses at the finish of the race. Virtually any horse can win a race but they only seem to win when the trainers and owners want them to – often at long prices. This means that blindly backing short-

priced favourites can be a quick way to the poor house. Statistically just under 45% of odds-on shots win and when you look at longer priced favourites this figure quickly drops down below the 40% mark. I will therefore make you a promise – my selections will favour a “value” approach. If I think the favourite should and probably will win I will say so but I will also look for where there may be better value either against the favourite in that race or perhaps in a different race – you don’t have to bet in every race! I favour a risk-averse approach to betting so here are a few tips or rules that I use: • Don’t look at what you might win – look at what you might lose; • Only bet with your “spending money”, and be prepared to lose what you risk; • Never bet if you can’t afford to and never ever bet with the housekeeping money; • Be prepared for the dreaded “long losing run” – we all get them whatever you may hear to the contrary from your punting pals; • Seek out the best price you can get for your selection and never change your mind, unless there is a compelling and overwhelming reason to do so; • Be calm, logical and measured in your daily or weekly struggle with “the opposition”; • Plan your betting in advance and always remember that betting shops are only warm and comfortable to keep you in there. Those “free” cups of coffee can come at one heck of a price if you have a bad day at the office; • Always remember that the horse doesn’t know what price it is and it can’t tell you if it is feeling unwell before a race. If a horse is unruly in the paddock or sweating heavily it may have run its race before it gets on the track. However, if it is fit and well and a genuine character, it will try its best to win the race - even if all the punting

dogs are barking that an odds-on shot is going to hose up – no horse is unbeatable; • Look for horses that have consistent recent form and that have “done it before”, particularly in a similar class of race, and over course and distance; • Always use your own judgement of value. If the price offered is longer than you expected try and weigh up why. However, if there seems to be no good reason other than market demand for another horse (that you may think has a lesser chance than your own selection) then you might give some thought to whether you should increase your stake. If the chances of success are unaltered but the odds are longer than you anticipated then you should seriously review your stake; • Keep records – you need to know the truth about your punting, especially if you are losing; • Finally, keep firm control of your betting. Done properly it is harmless fun that can be rewarding, but if it gets out of control it can become a dangerous addiction’. When it comes to staking I use a small level stakes approach. Some punters favour a percentage points system from their betting “bank” and weight their staking according to their assessment of chance. When they win they increase their bank and consequently the value of their “2%, 5% or 10% of bank” stake goes up. Conversely when they lose their stake goes down. In the end it all comes down to personal judgement, not a little skill and quite often heaps of luck but the Sport of Kings is a truly fascinating pastime that is exciting and a great spectacle to follow and watch. Newlyweds A young girl gets married and a few days later her mother goes to visit. When she knocks on the door, she is shocked to see her daughter open it naked. “What are you doing?” she asks. “Mom, it’s my LOVE dress!! Don’t you like it?” I’ll come back in a few weeks when the honeymoon is over” replies the mom. When she goes back, she is shocked when once again her daughter is naked. “Now what are you doing?” “Mom, it’s my LOVE dress. It keeps the marriage spicy!” Later that night the mom decides to try it for herself. When her husband comes home, he gives the same reaction: “Honey, what are you doing?” she give him the same answer her daughter gave her, “It’s my LOVE dress! What do you think of it?” Her husband thinks long and hard and says, “I think you should have ironed it!” Shy Guy A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” She responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t sleep with you tonight!” Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean £200?”

I attended an eagerly awaited evening on Friday night, the Grand Variety Performance in aid of the B.B.C. Radio Sheffield Children’s Hospital Scanner Appeal, held at Wadsley Bridge W.M.C, and what a night it turned out to be. Top local comedian, Jimmy Carol, got it spot on when he said to me at the end of the evening that there would not be a better night of entertainment anywhere in Britain this year. I particularly like Jimmy and felt really sorry for him when I learnt that he returned from working in Benidorm to attend and compere the event, and had to endure a three and a half delay on his flight. This meant that he had to come straight from the airport to the club. As if that were not bad enough, he had to fit in another charity event elsewhere in the middle of the evening, thus doing two charity performances on the same night. It is little wonder that I have such respect for Jimmy, who despite his small stature is a giant of a man. Jimmy, is not your stereotype comedian, most of whom are in the main pretty fat. No better example of this was Bobby Knutt, who kindly made a guest appearance, and he looked as if he was on a diet of Slim Slow and chips. I know that Bobby will not take offence at this as he himself made reference to his size in his act. It is if it goes with the job. Ex Sheffield Wednesday hero, David Hirst, who attended with former Newcastle United full back John Beresford was a fine physical specimen whilst playing for my beloved Owls, is now a much sought after personality for corporate events

and whilst he has put on a lot of weight since his footballing days he has become hilarious as an after dinner speaker. Is there some connection between weight and humour? I have, as a result of stopping smoking, put on a stone in weight recently, but did not notice an increase in my ability to make people laugh. In order to arrest this state of affairs, I am now on a pretty strict diet, without giving up the beer, and have now resumed smoking on health grounds. At least my bad temper has now disappeared. Co-compere for the evening was the very talented Gary Phillips, who has stagecraft to die for. He has the knack of making instant rapport with the audience and is a fine entertainer. If you want to see Gary, his local appearances are pretty rare as he tends to concentrate on performing every weekend at his pub, The Forest Showbar on Rutland Road, where he appears every Friday and Saturday. I promise you that this free plug will be rewarded with a couple of pints on my next visit. This fine night of entertainment began with the wonderful Stephanie King’s Stage Show, comprising Stephanie together with three lasses and three lads, aged between thirteen and eighteen. This is a very impressive act which will be busy entertaining at the various holiday camps this summer. Next up was award winning duo The New Chevrons, who are extremely talented vocalists at the same time as being very funny. I predict a great future for these two lads. Although a hard act to follow, the superb One Way soon had the audience showing their

appreciation. Once again the full capacity crowd, (there was not a spare seat in the house) were being served with the cream of local entertainment. Next we had a bit of nostalgia with former Paper Lace frontman, Carlo Santana, giving a superb performance closing his act with his big hit ‘Billy Don’t Be a Hero’ The audience, by this time, had had more than their money’s worth, and still had the mouth watering prospect of top of the bill Billy Pearce and Whizzkid. Neither disappointed, with Billy showing why he is for me the best comedian in the country. I spent some time with him earlier in the evening, chatting about the entertainment business in general, when a lady came up and said that she had only ever seen him on television. I had to explain to her that tonight his act may not quite the same as she had previously seen, and I was right, of course. Billy had the audience roaring with laughter, managing to even put a smile on my face. Two auction items were interesting in so far as the opportunity to watch the Blades train fetched more money than the top prize of watching the Owls play. Obviously the Blades training is a bit of a collector’s item. The top prize of lunch and two tickets went to the highest bidder, who fortunately for me as it turned out was my managing editor and friend Andrew Platts, who kindly gave it to me in recognition of my work and commitment to this newspaper. Thank you, Andrew for this very kind gesture and I assure you it was really appreciated

If you don’t know Audio Bullys are an electronic music duo, consisting of Simon Franks and Tom Dinsdale. They were once managed by DJ and presenter George Lamb. (Really?) The duo released their debut album Ego War in 2003 to positive reviews, which helped to establish them as one of the best new acts in dance music. The album fused elements of breaks, hip-hop, punk, garage and house with clever beats and samples. In 2005 they released Generation, the follow-up to their debut album. Despite reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart with their 2005 hit, “Shot You Down”, which samples the Nancy Sinatra version of the song “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)”, the album was poorly received. Generation was seen as a step away from what made Ego War

The daft thing is, “Shot You Down” was the big hit, this old-school club track, but it was followed by a moody, dark record. It confused everyone.” In making Generation, the group worked with Suggs of Madness collaborating on the track “This Road”. Their new album, “Higher Than The Eiffel” will be released sometime in 2010, and the first single promoting that album entitled “Only Man”, will be released on March 22nd. reviews by presley artist: Goldfrapp single: Rocket release date: March 8th

The very first Goldfrapp album ‘Felt Mountain’ wasn’t a big seller, but was a true masterpiece. It’s one of the most unusual albums you’re ever likely to hear. Its lushness oozes over you like chocolate but its haunting parts can chill you, can make you feel like you’ve just fallen in love, just split up with your girlfriend, make you feel like you’re alone and make you feel like the world is THE most beautiful thing. There isn’t and I doubt there ever will be an album like this ever again. Then bang! They release their second album ‘Black Cherry’ and the change of musical direction gives them well deserved chart success. Hits such as ‘Train’ and ‘Strict Machine’ have an electro glam feel to them and the whole album is brilliant. ‘Supernature’ followed and this was in a similar vain but slightly less edgy. Then a year or two ago they released their fourth album ‘Seventh Tree’ which placed a greater emphasis on ambient and down tempo music, drawing inspiration from nature and paganism. It was quite frankly a bit of a disappointment for me and many others. A couple of decent tracks but it was just too floaty and without the massive depth of ‘Felt Mountain’. Now they’re back with a new album ‘Head First’ in a couple of weeks pre-ceded by this new single ‘Rocket’. Thank goodness they’ve gone back to a more electro glamness sound for this single, I’m still yet to hear the album though. This is a decent single, it’s in the ‘Ooh La La’ kinda vain, its probably a bit too commercial and poppy for me but it is good fun and bouncy. Goldfrapp are a great band so I really hope they’re back on form.

I met this band when they were touring their previous album in Sheffield. The Scandinavians and the drummer were lovely, the female lead singer………… the opposite. Seemed to have a bit of chip on her shoulder and was very unfriendly. Maybe I caught her on a bad day. I still feel today as I felt then that their album was very overrated, it just seemed very ordinary. The irony of this is, they had a huge label behind them. Now for this album, no more big label, all funded by themselves, released by themselves. And what you get is a hugely better album. It’s very electronic, but virtually every song is unique, has something interesting to it. Very different styles too, songs such as ‘Chaos’ are very New York punk with synths, ‘Stone’ is just plain odd, very experimental which I applaud. This album to me feels like an electronic Blondie. Some songs are sung very deadpan, others with passion. ‘Rapture’ (ironically) is done very straight and is what I always wanted the Long Blondes to sound like. I hope this album does the business for them because I know the risks of releasing an album yourself, but at least now the shackles will be off and they can sound how they want to sound plus…………. hopefully the lead singer will now be more pleasant.

A big talent, so many female singers around now, she could get lost in the crowd. But it’s obvious she’s got the balls to make it big. This song though is a bit of a disappointment. Its got the stupidly daft wobbly vocal effect at the beginning but also the whole song is rather bland. Shame, but better to come I’m sure.

A packed concert room at Wadsley Bridge Club had the privilege last Friday to witness what host Jimmy Carol rightly acclaimed as “the finest line-up ever brought together in Clubland,” as we proudly presented the Mercury Grand Variety Performance. There were a couple of glitches – in particular we would like to apologise to those readers who had bought a ticket but couldn’t find a seat. However the event was best summed up by the audience itself – when Jimmy asked them, at the end of the evening, “Would you like us to do it again?” the scream of “YES” from the crowd almost lifted the roof off the room.

Next up was Stephanie King’s Stage Show. The list of stars who started their careers with Steph is impressive: yet again we were treated to a show-casing of many youngsters who will undoubtedly go on to have successful solo careers in the not too distant future. They aren’t an easy act to follow – but the New Chevrons took to the stage and blew us away with a show-stealing 30 minutes of vocal magic. Marc and CJ complement each other so well with their tight harmonies and impressive range of music, and throw in a fair bit of comedy as an added bonus!

Nick Hogan was yesterday sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for refusing to pay fines and costs amounting to £10,236 imposed by magistrates for ‘allowing’ smokers to smoke in his pub/s. Why did he do this you may ask? Several reasons actually. Firstly Nick Hogan believes this law is utterly wrong - he is right! Secondly, Nick could not stand the thought of his two thriving businesses becoming boring, soulless, atmosphereless shells that invited the odd non smoking soul through the door to the stench of sweat & cleaning fluids. Thirdly, by denying smokers the right to smoke in his pubs he is throwing away 85%-95% of his core business, thus could not survive. (Both now sold) Nick also considered that the local councils were in a total win/win situation as no matter what allegations are thrown about, the courts deem EHO’s to be credible witnesses-more credible than us mere mortals. However, in this case Nick was cleared of 5 charges levied against him. The smokeban has long been seen as the new ‘cash cow’ for the financially flailing judicial system and Nick has basically stuck two fingers up at the system-for it is corrupt, of that I have no doubt. The costs incurred (apparently) by the local council in bringing the original case to court amounted to £7,236. Now just what sort of hourly rate are they charging to accrue that sort of unbelievable figure? I know Nick was determined not to pay this absurd amount, therefore I knew what the systems retaliation would be - so did Nick. With the way the prison system is being run at the moment Nick will more than likely be shipped off to an Open Prison for he is a non violent offender and as the prison system is ‘chokka-block’ with criminals (they’re the people who commit real crimes, like theft, GBH, serious drug offences, money laundering, rape, murder & sex offences against children)) he will probably only have to stay with HMP Hotel for 12 weeks as early release beckons, to make way for some more of those previously mentioned. Criminals! The amazing aspect here is that a man has taken a stand against a law imposed by the criminally insane, who earn vast amounts in London for dictating what the humble street person can and cannot do with his/her business. We are approaching 5,000 closures of businesses since July 1st, 2007 yet this spiteful, restrictive and totally destructive law (which still cannot be proven to have saved one single life) is still in place and is still penalising hard working, honest business people like Nick Hogan. Interestingly enough Deborah Arnott (the ASHite) has got in on the act by proclaiming, “ It was a myth that the anti-smoking legislation had forced pubs out of business.Many pubs have shifted their focus to serving food, so they have changed their

nature.” Note this statement comes on the back of Gillian Merron’s equally ludicrous (almost word verbatim) statement to a health debate in Westminster on Thursday 25.02.10) - this is obviously the new tactic pre smokeban review! So nearly 5,000 closures is a myth! 5,000 businesses that until July 1st, 2007 were merrily carrying on serving pints to happy customers, and yes, smokers! Wait a minute Nick Hogan was one of these businessmen carrying on his daily business until ‘nanny’ stepped in and said he couldn’t do it anymore - the way he was doing it. Profitably. As for ‘many pubs shifting their focus to serving food’ -well - what choice have they had? So many pubs are struggling for custom it is arguable which is cheaper now, eat out or eat at home? I remember one pub in Leicester advertising dinners for £2.00, just to try and get the customers back in. It’s now closed for good so, Ms Arnott, diversification into food certainly didn’t save that pub! Back to this imprisonment, what, exactly, have the council achieved with all their diligence and due process? Sure, they got their conviction in the courts but it has now cost them £7,236 - was it worth it? Are the council tax payers of Chorley going to thank them for wasting their taxes? The courts initially decided to further the ‘cash cow’ by £3,000 in fines but have now imposed a custodial sentence on the non payer and criminalised him for his beliefs. So, a long drawn out process which has cost a now non recoverable £10,236 has resulted in one defiant licensee spending approximately 12 weeks ‘dossing’ at Her Majesty’s pleasure - at approximately £272.00 per week - another £3,264 of taxpayers money down the smoking ban drain. So this whole episode has cost the ‘system’ approximately £13,500 - which Nick, in this present climate, could not hope to earn in 12 weeks behind a pub bar! Nick will be able to smoke ‘behind bars’ of this nature! What this idiotic and misguided anti smoking lobby do not realise is that they have created the martyr of all martyrs. They may well clap each other exuberantly on the back and guffaw at Nick Hogan’s plight but they have not broken the spirit of the man. As stated, they have created the one thing they never wanted - Nick Hogan, The Smoke Ban Martyr Nick, on behalf of freedom2choose I applaud your courage in standing up for every single smoker and licensee in this country. Now, where are the rest of you?

BATTLE OF THE BOOGIE Back in 1979 I was playing with the original Big Business when we received a call to ask us if we would be interested in touring as the backing band for Mick Jackson. After a meeting, and Mick coming to see the band at Woodseats WMC, agreement was reached and we commenced rehearsals. It soon dawned on us that we were working with a great guy and wonderful songwriter. The rest, as they say, is history. Born Michael George Jackson, singer, songwriter and music producer Mick Jackson grew up in Yorkshire before moving to Germany with the armed forces at the age of 18. He had developed a passion for music early in life, singing in various soul bands and decided to pursue music as a career when he left the army. With his brothers Peter and David he formed the band ‘JACKO’ and began writing songs and

establishing himself in the German music industry. In 1977 he became part of the booming Munich Disco scene and released “You Turn Me On”, his first single as a solo artist. The song opened lots of doors for Mick as a performer and songwriter in Europe. Around the same time Mick and his brother David wrote a song called “Blame it on the Boogie” with their drummer Elmar Krohn, which (after being rejected by 22 record labels) clinched the deal for Mick’s first album release as a recording artist, produced by Grammy Award winning arranger/ producer Sylvester Levay. Unbeknownst to Mick, his publisher also offered “Blame it on the Boogie” to American supergroup The Jacksons who after leaving Motown were convinced that this would be the song that would lead them into the next stage of their

gusto. Its no good relying on simple billboard which will only be seen by people frequenting the club. What about the occasional members who you are trying to attract back into the club. What a difference at Woodhouse Mill WMC. Coloured posters in the windows, entrance area and bar areas in fact they are everywhere except the toilets (must have a word with them about that) That’s what advertising and selling are all about. I have been in Dronfield today where everybody was raving over a group called Heroes who appeared at the Hilltop Sports and Social club over the weekend, I notice that they are appearing at the Arundel Club, City road on Friday 5th March. Might be worth a visit. Why the local clubs don’t get their heads together swapping entertainment information and dare I suggest making sure that between them they offer good bands and groups. Shared out they could make sure that every weekend is covered.

I saw a very good group over the weekend at the Handsworth social club “Big Time Charlie” excellent musicians and good voices. Numbers ranged from current chart toppers right back to the sixties. Personally I have never heard of them but having seen what they can do, I will be looking out for their next local appearance. On to one of my favourite topics. Clubs not advertising properly and not actively selling their club. Look at the majority of entertainment adverts. Names which don’t always convey what the artist actually does. The above is a classic case in point advertised simply as “Big time Charlie” ! The club was almost full which makes a nice change. With a bit of extra effort it could have been a packed house.I gather that this club is going to feature a monthly group. Its taken a long time for that penny to drop. Lets hope they advertise the Ian Bowen. next one with a bit more

As we celebrate another birthday, I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our supporters, whose generosity literally keeps PDSA running from one year to the next. We are also very grateful to our local volunteers and fundraisers, for devoting their time and skills for pets in need. LE FONDRE STRIKE WINS MILLERS ALL THREE POINTS Rotherham United recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burton Albion thanks to an Adam Le Fondre strike after 52 minutes. After a scrappy first half the Millers improved in the second and were only prevented from making the victory more comfortable by an outstanding performance from Brewers ‘keeper Artur Krysiak. Ronnie Moore gave loan signing Josh Walker a debut in midfield, with Micky Cummins dropping to the bench, and he impressed in his first outing for the club. The Millers had the first effort of the game after five minutes.Neat interplay between Tom Pope and Kevin Ellison found Le Fondre in space on the edge of the penalty area, but his curling effort was watched wide by Krysiak. Rotherham saw another effort drift wide of the post soon after, with Pope nodding wide from a Nicky Law free kick. Burton’s first effort of note came after 20 minutes when Steve Kabba found the in-form Shaun Harrad inside the penalty area, but the striker’s weak effort was comfortably saved by Andy Warrington at his near post. Five minutes before the break the home side missed an excellent opportunity to take the lead.Kabba found space for a shot inside a crowded penalty area, but Warrington saved his scuffed effort with his legs before Tom Parkes somehow missed the rebound with the goal gaping. The Millers took the lead on 52 minutes after Burton allowed a long ball to bounce inside their penalty area.Le Fondre found himself with time and space and somehow managed to bundle the LOCAL SPORT NEWS

Millers football delights Ronnie Ronnie Moore was understandably a very happy manager after his Rotherham United side made it five league games unbeaten with a 1-0 win at Burton Albion. Adam Le Fondre was once again the Millers hero, scoring a scrambled winner in the second half, with the Millers missing several other chances to make it a more emphatic scoreline. “We totally dominated the game in the second half,” said Ronnie. “We played some great football, and there is no doubt it could have been four or five. At half time we spoke about upping the tempo and we did that. We have picked up one or two little knocks, Alfie got a knock so he came off. We then went 4-5-1 to secure the points but to be fair our ‘keeper hasn’t really had too many saves to make.” Josh Walker made his Millers debut following this morning’s move from Middlesbrough and Ronnie was impressed with his performance: “He got on the ball and passed it,” added Ronnie. “That is his first full game for a while but three weeks ago he was playing in the Championship. There is plenty to come from him but I was impressed with him today.”

The Steelers got their weekend off to a winning start with a victory against Rob Wilson’s Newcastle Vipers, securing them the sixth place in the Elite League table, and pushing the Vipers down to seventh. The Steelers gave up a 5-0 lead, but were still 5-1 up by the end of the second period. It was a quiet start to the game goal-wise, as the 30 shots on goal from both teams only resulted in one goal, Sheffield’s Robert Farmer finding a way past Vipers’ goalie Michel Robinson at 17:14 on a delayed penalty call. The bulk of the damage was done in the second period, as Matt Hubbauer doubled the home side’s lead just over three minutes in. Dowd and Talbot added two more just after the half-way mark, with goals at 31:24 and 33:35, and it was another member of the Brit Pack who added the Steelers’ fifth goal. Jason Hewitt scored a goal just over a minute later, and during the game bravely opted to play on and finish the game against doctor’s orders when he had two teeth knocked out and a third knocked up into his mouth. At 38:13 Jason Tejchma scored the visitors’ first goal but Matt Hubbauer soon retaliated with another Steelers’ goal at 39:22. During the second period break the Vipers changed their netminder, replacing Robinson with 21-year-old back-up Richie Lawson. The third period was the Vipers’, as Mike Berry scored at 45:56

and Tejchma added his second of the night at 51:56 on the powerplay. Robinson went back in net after the Vipers’ third goal, but the score remained 6-3 to Sheffield. On Saturday the Steelers were without Hewitt, who remained in Sheffield after an emergency dentists’ appointment that morning, as they travelled to Whitley Bay for another go at the Vipers. The Steelers picked up where they left off and goals from Matt Hubbauer and Jeff Legue put them two goals ahead as the Steelers rained 23 shots on the Vipers’ goal in the first period. In the second period, however, the Vipers rallied their troops and scored two unanswered goals to tie the game from Tejchma and Ben Campbell. The Steelers fought back in the third, with Jonathan Zion adding the game-winning goal at 46:36 and Hubbauer added his second of the night to finish the 4-2 scoreline. The Steelers faced off on Sunday against the Hull Stingrays in their third game in three nights, and if there was any fatigue in the Sheffield side it didn’t show, as six different players netted for the home side. Mike Sgroi opened the scoring for the Steelers with a powerplay goal at 6:01, but the Stingrays levelled the scores at 9:39 with a shorthanded goal from Kalmikov. It was Kalmikov again in the second period as he put the Stingrays ahead in the 25th minute, but the rest of the

period was all Steelers as the home side fired away three unanswered goals from Jason Hewitt, Scott Basiuk, and Doug Sheppard. The Stingrays fought hard in the third period to stage a comeback, but to no avail as the Steelers continued their goal-scoring with shots from Jeff Legue and Matt Hubbauer finding the back of the net to complete the 6-1 scoreline. The Steelers are next at home against the Coventry Blaze on Friday March 5th at 7:30pm. The game will be played at Ice Sheffield and is NOT a Season Ticket game. Wednesday boss Alan Irvine shuffled his team at the interval reverting to a 4-3-3 formation, bringing on Tommy Miller for his first appearance since November and Leon Clarke for Soares and Gray. Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has branded his side’s 5-0 thumping at Reading on Saturday as ‘unacceptable’. The Owls were second best all over the field during a dismal afternoon at the Madejksi Stadium, the result of which saw SWFC slip back into the Championship relegation zone. Irvine has now called for the players to stand up and be counted and show the mental strength required to haul clear of danger. He said: “That performance was unacceptable. We were unlucky with the deflected first goal, I would agree with that, but after that the players had to show character and dig deep and have the strength to cope with those kind of things because they happen. From there, you have to respond in the right manner and we caved in. “We have to be mentally strong, because if you don’t have that kind of mental strength, every time something goes wrong, you will find yourself in trouble. “I’m still getting to know the players . We had a great start when we first came into the club but the time you really find out about people is in adversity. What I am looking for now is character in the group. We need men, we need leaders in order to get out of the position we are in at the moment.” Irvine insists there were no crumbs of comfort after the Owls suffered their heaviest defeat of the season so far in Berkshire. Reading attacked at will and were in control from the first whistle, leaving the manager and his coaching staff frustrated observers. He added:”We were awful all over the pitch. Even prior to the first goal, we were poor in possession and players didn’t take responsibility when they needed to. Our defending was poor, there was nothing that I could have said ‘we did that quite well’. Hopefully, this is just a one-off.”

Sheffield Wednesday defender Frank Simek has received a call-up to the USA international squad for next week’s friendly encounter against Holland. The game takes place in Amsterdam on Wednesday March 10. Simek will leave to join the American squad on Sunday before returning to England on Thursday. Simek has five caps for the USA under the belt and last featured on the international stage in 2007, when he played against Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. The Missouri product exclusively told swfc.co.uk: “I’m extremely happy to receive this call-up and hopefully I will play a part in the game. “First and foremost, the important thing was to get back playing for Wednesday and that has led to me being back in contention for my country. “I know it will be a difficult match against Holland but one that I am really looking forward to. We have plenty of good players in our squad and we know that we are capable of beating most teams on our day.” Simek will now have an eye on the World Cup finals in South Africa later this year, when the USA open Group C with a crunch clash against England.

A VIEW FROM THE TERRACE

Written by Bunsen Bob Trying to sugar coat a 5-0 defeat to a fellow relegation struggler is like trying to polish a turd. It’s pointless and will leave a nasty taste in the mouth so I won’t bother. The only thing I will say about the match is that the defending was not dissimilar to a Russ Abbott sketch. I have stressed that the remainder of the season will be a rollercoaster and I’m sure that there are plenty of twists and turns to come. Warnock (who has gone up massively in my estimation in recent weeks, needless to say he couldn’t get any lower, but for some reason I’ve warmed to the man) has left Palace for cross town rivals QPR which is interesting. I haven’t quite worked out what effect that will have on our survival chances but it can only add an extra ingredient to the desperate melting pot of Championship self preservation. I’ve studied our run-in more intensely than I studied for my A-Level sociology exams. The latter proved to be an inconsequential endeavour and the former will prove to be the same as you can’t accurately predict this league, or indeed Wednesday. Therefore, my approach to the nipple twistingly vital matches ahead is to take each game as it comes, win the personal battles, play to our strengths and not, under any circumstances, use clichés.

BLADES HANG ON TO WIN SEVEN GOAL THRILLER

Jamie Ward netted twice as United held on to secure three points in a seven-goal thriller at Bramall Lane. At one stage the Blades held a 3-0 lead over Plymouth but were forced to hold on at the final whistle as the Green Army staged a fightback. Henri Camara opened the scoring and Richard Cresswell netted a bizarre fourth after Ward’s double to end Plymouth’s mini-revival. Morgan and Cresswell returned to the starting line-up for the home clash with Argyle in place of the injured Geary and suspended Henderson. Accommodating skipper Morgan meant Nosworthy reverted to right-back allowing Montgomery and Ward to continue in roles further forward. For the visitors, boss Mariner named an unchanged team, which included Sheffield-born Barker. Bartley made an early impression, clattering Mackie after just six seconds, and despite the hardcore of travelling fans making themselves heard, United were the better side in the early exchanges. From the game’s first corner, on six minutes, Cresswell beat teammate Morgan to a Yeates delivery but headed wide. United grabbed the lead, however, a minute later and it was the result of Yeates cleverly helping on a forward ball with the outside of his right boot. CAMARA outpaced Arnason down the right channel before slotting beyond the hand of Stockdale and into opposite corner. Camara had a chance to add a quick second when Ward’s shot deflected to the goalscorer but this time Barker made the block, at the expense of a corner. The Blades looked the more potent and Ward’s delicate chip over the visiting defence almost put Williamson in. Half chances for the visitors saw Morgan keep out Mackie after Fallon had headed down a Duguid cross and then there were

weak appeals for a penalty when Mackie fell just inside the box. It wasn’t long before United were back on the attack and a good move resulted in Kallio trying his luck from 30 yards, but Stockdale was well positioned. The away goalkeeper, though, had no chance on 35 minutes when the Blades added a second. Kallio attacked down the left and his cross evaded a busy box until WARD fired an unstoppable first-time effort into the top corner. Mackie was industrious and Fletcher fired wide but the visitors offered little in attacking positions. The only noteworthy action in the remainder of the first period was a yellow card for each team. Cresswell was cautioned for accumulative fouls and he was followed into the book by Stockdale, for dissent. Mariner showed his displeasure at Plymouth’s first half display with a double change at the break, throwing on Bolasie and Mason, and both made an impression in a hectic first 15 minutes of the second period. United appeared to be continuing from where they had left off in the first period with a third goal on 47 minutes. From Nosworthy’s long throw, Morgan took the attentions of Barker and Arnason, allowing WARD to take a touch before beating Stockdale again, this time from less than six yards. United appeared to be coasting but Plymouth hit back and caused a number of nervous moments for the home players, management and crowd. It began when Bunn attempted to claim a long throw through a barrage of bodies but when he failed, BOLASIE was gifted a simple chance to touch into the empty net. Bunn went some way to making amends when he was quickly off his line to deny Mason but the goalkeeper was beaten in the air by Arnason, fortunately the ball landed on the roof of the net. Plymouth were having their best

spell of the game and closed the deficit once more on 56 minutes, thanks to another of their substitutes. Nosworthy failed to clear and a spell of head tennis ended with MASON clipping past an exposed Bunn. By now Mariner had used all his substitutions and soon after the Blades regained their composure, and had began to force the visitors back once again. Ward looked for his hat-trick with a long-range effort and then Cresswell fired over after a quick break. Morgan and Mackie were booked for a mild coming together and United’s first personnel change was on 78 minutes when Evans replaced the tiring Camara. The final ten minutes followed the pattern of the second half in terms of entertainment and goalmouth action, beginning with a bizarre fourth goal for the Blades. Stockdale collected the ball after diving at Cresswell’s feet but forgot about the United frontman when he rolled the ball out! CRESSWELL accepted the gift, took the ball from the goalkeeper and sidefooted into the unguarded net whilst Stockdale held his head. Stockdale saved with his legs, ironically from Cresswell, moments later and then gathered a shot from Yeates after an intelligent Montgomery pass. Blackwell threw on both Harper and Stewart but Plymouth pressed in the final moments and added a third goal, this time MACKIE being rewarded for his hard work, firing past Bunn after a neat turn. Five minutes of added time brought more nervousness, especially when Mason found space and fired just wide with Bunn at full stretch. Stockdale looked to make amends when he went forward for a late Argyle corner and he was involved but was let down by a poor touch. The final chance went begging in the final minute of stoppage time when Fletcher hammered wide. The final whistle signalled that United had stretched the unbeaten home run to ten matches but it wasn’t without tension, mainly in the second half.

Persistence A VIEW pays off FROM THE Bizarre doesn’t do his goal justice, but Richard Cresswell says years of trying finally paid dividends when he netted United’s fourth against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. Cresswell left on-loan Argyle goalkeeper David Stockdale redfaced, when he popped up from behind the keeper, pinched the ball and put it in the unguarded net: “I remember Dion Dublin doing something similar a long time ago. I just had a feeling he was going to put the ball down, and when he did I managed to get in front of him and slide it in.” “To be fair I still had a bit of work to do because he came straight at me, so it was nice to see it hit the back of the net. “I have tried it many times before but without success, so it was a great feeling and in the end we needed that goal to get the points.” United will have been disappointed to concede three second-half goals, but despite acknowledging the need to tighten things up, Cresswell was keen to draw on the positives, which included three of the Blades frontmen getting on the scoresheet: “It was a strange game. We totally dominated the first-half, but after going three up we dropped our guard and in the end it was all hands to the pump. “At the end of the day though it is three points and that was our only thought coming into the game. We know we must improve, but to score four goals is brilliant and everybody contributed. “I knew Henri would have the pace to get way from his marker, Wardy’s first was an excellent finish and to nick one myself made it a good day around.”

The Blades big dipper Like Alton Towers’ most unpredictable rollercoaster, Sheffield United’s season continues to twist and turn as we fast approach the business end of the season. Without ever setting the Championship alight, the Blades have steadily picked up enough points to have us sitting just outside the play-off places. In fairness to Kevin Blackwell the play-off positions have almost been a second home under his tenure, and many would bet on him getting us there again. But games such as the one we saw on Saturday seem to suggest that a second consecutive top six finish will definitely not be plain sailing. I’m sure that all football fans say this about their own team, but there surely can be no team like Sheffield United to have its faithful tossed between despair and elation, frustration and joy in the space of one five minute second half period. Against relegation threatened Plymouth Argyle we had the game all but sewn up after 50 minutes with a comfortable 3-0 lead, just as we had led against city rivals earlier in the season. But almost predictably, inevitably, the mini-crumble began. You sit there thinking for what reason are we doing this? A team such as West Brom, Newcastle or Forest would have raced into a 5-0 lead without any mercy of Plymouth’s plight, while the Blades’ benevolence sometimes knows no bounds. I suppose the reasoning still lies behind our terminally unsettled defensive set up. Chris Morgan came back into the team to line up against three other defenders who he has little or no knowledge of playing with. An understanding will most definitely develop, and this would be helped by Blackwell being able to name the same back line for a prolonged run of games. It seems to go without saying of late that our attacking prowess becomes more refined as each game goes by, but if we can’t find some sort of rhythm to the way we defend in this league, then the play-off positions may prove to be a bridge too far.
