Initially he gave the impression of being a knight in shining armour but then said that I had a really flat rear tyre and he would help me to change it. I very nearly fell for this trick but instead said I would take it to the garage, drove off and pulled in further up to check. The tyre was perfectly ok – just as I thought. I have been told that he was probably trying to get me out of the car to either take my handbag or my car. I have been told that whilst this is not a frequent occurrence there has been an increase in bogus callers.

David Blunkett, MP kindly arranged for 52 tickets on the guided tour and met the group in the new Portcullis House. It was a wonderful day, we were amazed at how many frequent sayings have their origins in the House of Commons; such as towing the line and keeping at arms length. These two phrases originate when the Commons was a more turbulent place, there is a line in front of the benches that MPs are not allowed to cross and the seats are an arm and a sword length from the opposing side.

Top safety tips The incidences of distraction burglary are low, but by always following these steps you can ensure you are able to confidently deal with unsolicited callers. Lock: Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home. Stop: Think if you are expecting anyone. Check that the back door is locked and take the key out. Look through the spy-hole or the window to see who it is. Chain: If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first. Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. (Normally, when the door is shut and locked, leave the bar or chain off in case you need to get out in an emergency.) Check: Ask for and take the time to check their identity card. Call the company they say they are from using the phone directory. Don’t call the number on the ID card as it may be fake. Be extra cautious of callers who: say they need help urgently; ask you to step outside; want to come in; ask to make a phone call; want to use your toilet; ask for a glass of water Only go to help if you have someone else with you. Don’t worry if you decide not to help – it is not rude or unfriendly.

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who was looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she’d like to have for her birthday. ‘I’d like to be six again’, she replied, still looking in the mirror . On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of coco pops, and then took her to theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald’s where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a fizzy pop, and her favourite sweets, M&M’s. What a fabulous adventure!

The Hot topic of the week has to be the adulterous relationships of Tiger Woods and Ashley Cole. The grovelling apology made by Tiger Woods lasting over thirteen minutes was watched by a record number of people across America and throughout the world. Although this may have been humiliating for Tiger, it pales into insignificance when one compares it to the suffering of his wife. Similarly, a few hours of stolen pleasure has cost Ashley Cole, by all accounts, his marriage to one of the most sought after beauties on the planet. Cheryl Cole will have no difficulty getting Mr. Right after her experiences with Mr. Wrong. John Terry’s wife, on the other hand has forgiven him, which I feel sends out the wrong message. Having been a serial adulterer for much of my married life, I now find myself to be poacher turned gamekeeper, and really pretty ashamed of my behaviour, although I have always endeavoured to be a good parent. Temptation is an awful thing, and as Tiger Woods quite rightly pointed out that being rich and famous has made it easy for such temptation to come his way. Fame and riches carry certain responsibilities; most importantly the effect one’s behaviour is viewed by all the young people to whom one becomes a role model. I don’t know whether Tiger and his wife will stay together, but what I do know is that the penalties, both emotional and financial, make this sort of conduct very high risk. At home in Dronfield Wood-

house, my radio is always tuned to Radio Sheffield, but in my girlfriend’s home in Brampton, I get the opportunity to listen to Peak Radio. They are currently running a competition which should raise a titter or two, having the most unusual prize of a free boob job. This has been most controversial, and apparently the entrants have now been cut down to the final twenty. Whatever the rights or wrongs of a competition like this, one thing is for certain, the radio station has received massive publicity, achieving a headline in the News of the World. Maybe, this newspaper should jump on the bandwagon and run a competition with a first prize of a member extension. How awful to be in the last twenty and your name and photograph being shown on the internet. That would be enough to make a competition of this nature a no goer, and rather restrict future liaisons. I have long maintained that Dronfield is the Las Vegas of North East Derbyshire, and it was never more evidential than on Friday night, when top local band Junkyard Dog, sporting a new drummer, appeared at the Victoria pub which is a short walk from my house. Next week poses a problem for me with two of my dearest friends on the circuit appearing simultaneously on Thursday night, Sunny Daye at the Victoria whilst top singer/ songwriter Vincent makes a welcome return to the White Swan, Dronfield. Rather than show any affiliation to either of these superb artistes, I shall be dividing my time between

the two of them, guaranteeing a superb night of top class entertainment. Far too often, I have called in at venues not knowing who was appearing, and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the entertainment yet dismayed at the small audience. I cannot stress the importance of advertising these nights as it would reap instant reward for a relatively small outlay. Has anybody noticed how much the new Mr. Katie Price is starting to look like the previous incumbent of that title? Alex Reid, at the behest of his new wife, has had a nose job and a bit of facial improvement, correcting years of being whacked in the face whilst pursuing his job as a cage fighter, and now has his hair spiked up, making him look uncannily like Peter Andre. This will not concern people’s favourite Peter, who as a result of all the publicity surrounding his problems with Jordan, has totally resurrected his singing career after it had been dead in the water for a number of years. He is at present on a nationwide sell out tour and must be laughing all the way to the bank. Whilst awaiting a programme on television to start, I endured ten minutes of Coronation Street, a programme mercifully, I have not had to watch since regaining my bachelor status ten years ago, and did not know any of the characters. Whatever happened to Albert Tatlock and Ena Sharples?

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, ‘Well Dear, what was it like being six again?’ Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. ‘I meant my dress size, you fool !!!!’ The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is going get it wrong.

LETS ROCK CANCER! “Let’s Rock Cancer” is a charitable organisation founded by Brant and Danni Clayton two years ago after their mum died of cancer, and then later being joined by Sophie Brumby after unfortunately experiencing cancer within her family. The aim of the organisation is to raise money for cancer charities, by organising music shows that aim also at promoting local talent in the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire area. As of 2010, thanks to a local youth grant, they have been able to secure the Holloways to play for them. 75% of all profits made will be going to four charities selected by Brant and Danni’s mum before she died. The remainder will go back into being able to put on the next concert. In the two months that have followed since the release of The Holloways’ last single ‘Happiness and Penniless’; the four young charmers from North London have been keeping themselves pretty busy. To celebrate signing their recent record deal with TVT records, the band played a triumphant, sold out gig at the 100 Club and soon after became the highlight of many peoples’ Camden Crawl. They’ve since stormed through the heats and currently sit in the final 14 out of 2,000 in V Festival/Channel 4’s Road to V competition. The winner will take the coveted opening slot at this summer’s V Festival (announced in July on Channel 4). In addition, notoriously late risers, The Holloways managed not only to be up on time for an 8am gig (in pyjamas and dressing gowns, of course) as part of the Carling 24 Festival, but also play a set of such contagious energy that the entire bleary-eyed crowd found themselves dancing on the tables and singing along at the top of their lungs... Even earlier that morning (around 2am) the group performed a hilarious impromptu duet with Channel 4’s Steve Jones, live on T4! The show is at The Leadmill on the 27th February, doors open at 7pm. The gig is 14+ so please bear that in mind! The Holloways will be supported by local bands Light Scars (from Grimsby) and Area (from Doncaster). The gig will finish around 10.30pm. LOVED UP DEAD LIKE AT THE HARRY PLUG! The Plug have a great line–up happening on the 25th this month; Exlovers headline the show. Their new 5-track EP ‘You Forget So Easily’ was recorded with Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Pete Doherty), who approached the band after seeing them supporting Pete Doherty at Shepherds Bush Empire for an NME Awards show. Formed in Spring 2007, Sheffield sextet Dead Like Harry consists of an eclectic mix of friends brought together by their love of writing and performing music. Since their early teens, song writing brothers Matt and Sam Taylor have been most at home in the spotlight, hitting the stages of various smoky Sheffield bars, from the tender age of fourteen for charismatic front man Sam. Joined by old school friend and vocalist Alice Faraday, talented rhythm section Robin Baker, John Redgrave and Adam Crofts, Dead Like Harry were ready to pen some fresh new tracks and put nearly a decades worth of material to good use. The result is a sound coloured by rock, blues, country and even folk influences, but which remains at its centre an honest, from-the-heart collection of songs written and performed by a group of young friends who want nothing more than to make great music. MOVIN’ IT OVER HERE At the age of 22, Foamo aka Kye Gibbon has already established himself as one of the best producers to come out of the UK in recent years. It’s not often that talent comes rising through the ranks fully formed, undiluted, and with as much potential as Foamo has done. Countless comparisons have been made between him and some of the very finest and he’s gained the support of DJs including Diplo, Armand Van Helden and Rob Da Bank. Not bad for a boy from High Wycombe. If you don’t already know, Gorillaz are an English virtual band created in 1998 by Damon Albarn of Britpop band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. Their first album sold an amazing 7 million copies worldwide. Albarn is really the only constant musician in the band, they use many others, bring people in and out etc. This single has, believe it or not, Bobby Womack singing on it?! Bizarre idea but great.

The song starts of with a very basic electronic drum beat followed by an eighties hip hop style vocal. Then the second (real) verse is a fairly pretty Albarn vocal then seemingly out of nowhere comes this soaring, almost gospel style Womack vocal that smacks you right in the face. It’s so full of passion and feeling. It has a Saturday Night Fever feel to it all, mixed with a bit of gospel and an early Afrika Bambaataa groove. I love this single! It’s original in the way its mixed its styles and its simplicity is endearing. This will be number 1 believe me and it’ll be up there for best single of the year.

We’re not a lover of boy bands (well man bands now) here at Drag as you probably know. But because of the shocking death of band member Stephen Gately then we should give them some leeway (but we’ll also be honest as always) . This is kinda nice because it’s their first release by the guys since Stephens death and its got a solo vocal of his on it. As songs go, it’s a pretty song. Ronan doesn’t overdo his accent on his vocal which can be sometimes very irritating, so fair play to him for that. Like Take That, they are sounding better with age. The video that goes with it is very heartbreaking, but also has its funny moments and is probably the saddest video I’ve seen since Johnny Cash’ Hurt.

We had to bring this release to your attention. If you’re in the diminishing (sadly) minority of wanting your music on a cd then this is probably the bargain of the century. All the first five of the Pretenders albums for less then fifteen pounds. I love a bargain! Their first album entitled quite simply ‘1’ is rock n’ roll genius. From the opening heaviness of ‘Precious’ to tracks such as ‘Up the Neck’ ‘The Wait’ and ‘Phone Call’ this album is punk done in a more rock n’ roll way. This album is as important musically as the Sex Pistols ‘Never Mind The B*ll*x’. Yes it does have the huge number 1 ‘Brass In Pocket’ but that isn’t really representative of what this album is about. Its much dirtier, has a grubbiness about it that I like and as my mum always used to say when singer Chrissie Hynde used to come on the tele “Ew, she looks like she wears dirty knickers” Of course there’s not just this important first album that’s any good, the others have real gems on them too such as ‘Talk Of The Town’ Don’t Get Me Wrong’ and ‘2000 Miles’ to name but a few. Go to Amazon or any similar website if you want to grab a very good musical bargain.

When we asked Mark Ritchie to vacate this space, after sterling service, it was intended that we would create editorial, encourage letters and make announcements that would stimulate a response and create debate. Well, I thought that we were doing that however it’s never a good thing to become comfortable or complacent. I have to concede that I do ‘go on a bit’ and also I pontificate when a subject becomes a bit of a ‘bee in my bonnet’. Derek Tomlinson has also upset a few and I have rather enjoyed the spirited responses from Bellhouse,

Firth Park etc. I’ve seen Derek knocking around at Mercury events and I know he’s going to be at Wadsley Bridge for the Variety Command performance but he seems to have gone to ground a little and personally I miss his contribution. The criticism, which came via the Mercury house critic, did set me thinking. We get letters and we also get people sending stuff that is really an advert, which we filter out, and we get comment and reviews but what we really want is good news. Send us something to shout about, let us know when you’re proud of something. It was suggested that I use this column to advertise Mercury events or as a vehicle for self publicity. I

Since I started writing this we have promoted, or been involved in, about a dozen hugely successful events or shows and Friday night at Wadsley is no exception. This is a Clubland Variety Performance in aid of the BBC Radio Sheffield Children’s Hospital Scanner appeal and it’s a sellout. On Saturday April 3rd we take a Mercury event into Sheffield City Hall. This is the follow up to the hugely successful event we held at Sheffield Cathedral just before Christmas which may well have been the ‘happiest’ concert I’ve ever been to. This one features Yorkshire Champion Band, Stannington Brass, the World Famous Bolsterstone

Male Voice Choir and a special guest appearance by the fantastic John Reilly of Boy on a Dolphin and Acoustic Angels fame. The concert will be compered by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Howie Pressman. This is on behalf of Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care. A special arrangement has been commissioned of Peter Skellern’s great song ‘You’re a Lady’ which will be a joint item for John the band and choir. Great venues, fantastic performers and wonderful charities. That’s got to be worth shouting about. Come and join us at the City Hall I promise you we’ll have a great time together.

Sheffield’s HBS Radio is celebrating the nomination of one its presenters for the Best Newcomer at the National Hospital Radio Awards. Adam Ellis will be travelling to Scotland for the awards ceremony in March where he will join fellow presenters and radio station volunteers. Among the judges for this year’s awards are veteran DJ Tony Blackburn, the Controller of BBC Radio 2 Bob Shennan, BBC Weather Presenter Carol Kirkwood, and TV Dr Chris Steele. Originally from Manchester, Adam came to Sheffield as a student and became interested in radio while studying for a degree in broadcast journalism. He started out with student radio and then joined HBS Radio in 2009. The 8 until 10 Tuesday night request show is co-hosted with Peter Davis and Alastair Sagar . Between them they visit the wards earlier in the evening to speak to patients and collect their favourite music requests to play on the show. It’s not just request show though as they also have featured artists and a mystery

IF YOU CUT YOU MIGHT END UP SHUT I’ve just had a conversation with a well known and respected agent. He informs me that some clubs are cutting their entertainment budget. If there’s one thing that all of the clubs have in common that have closed over the last 30 years it’s that they cut their entertainment budget. History should teach us lessons that help use make decisions for the future. It can’t be denied that times aren’t easy in some clubs but if you stop giving people a good reason to come out you’ll simply sell less beer and unfortunately it can lead down a rocky road. The most successful clubs spend the most on advertising and entertainment. It’s not my position to lecture anyone on how to run a business but please think very long and hard before you reduce the budget for entertainment.

VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 26 Well it ended up being coverage of just one ice hockey game this week. We were short-handed mid-week so had to bring in a line-change for Saturday. It was a game worth waiting for though; the comparatively experienced John and Joseph were joined by rookie Phil for coverage of an explosive game at the Sheffield Arena. The Sheffield Steelers against the Belfast Giants providing our sports commentary for the patients this week had just about everything, except a win for the Steelers, as a late goal gave Belfast the victory 6-5. Sunday this week was a day affected by electricity. As the hospital carried out its routine maintenance on the site generators various parts of the hospital had limited electricity supply. One of the areas who suffered a reduction in supply was the hospital Chapel, who were only able to proceed with their usual Sunday morning Holy Communion service with the aid of some temporary lighting and a ghettoblaster. The electricity restrictions meant that we

were unable to join them for the weekly live relay of the service on Radio Nightingale for the patients. So, not to leave people without a service we delved through the archives and came up with the first of our recordings from churches in Rotherham. Some six years ago, almost to the day we visited the Church of the Venerable Bede in Maltby and recorded a service led by the Rev Peter Turnbull. The service was a collection of poems, readings and hymns which celebrated the period of Lent and for those of us who remember the day it was fabulous to hear it again. Hopefully it brought some comfort to those who were hearing it for the first time, too. Next week we have ice hockey coverage and an outdoor collection on the activity list. We continue to search for new volunteers who can bring something to the Nightingale team. If you’ve ever listened to the radio and thought it sounded easy and fancied a go, do get in touch with us. Its not as easy as it sounds but we can train (almost!) anyone to present a programme. We’re really keen to hear from people who have a musical specialist subject which can be used as a theme for a programme, e.g. swing, brass, motown, etc. If presenting sounds a bit too technical or terrifying, then we have a variety of other tasks which don’t involve talking on the radio. Most of them do involve comput-

ers, but not all. Some are just about talking to patients, visiting people at their bedside to collect requests and feedback about the service. There’s admin jobs, making jingles, looking after the library of CD’s, even cleaning and tea-mashing! Whatever your skills, if you’ve got the time and inclination to get involved in providing our service to the patients of the Rotherham General Hospital do get in touch with us. Rotherham United earned a hard-fought point against Torquay in a 1-1 draw at Don Valley. Danny Harrison gave the Millers the lead but Torquay’s second half persistence paid off when Elliot Benyon earned the visitors a point on 85 minutes.Gary Roberts was sent off in stoppage time to cap off a frustrating night for the Millers. The visitors started brightly and forced a corner inside the first minute.Mark Ellis connected well with his head and forced a flying save from Andy Warrington to prevent the Millers getting off to the worst possible start. Torquay continued to push and captain Nicky Wroe tested Warrington again from the edge of the penalty area.Chris Zebroski’s cross was only half cleared but Wroe scuffed his volley, allowing the Millers ‘keeper to make a comfortable save. Barnes had another effort comfortably saved for Torquay before Le Fondre was put through on goal by an excellent pass by Roberts.The prolific striker ran through on goal and lifted his shot over Bevan, only to see it clip the top of the crossbar. On the hour Barnes had a terrific chance to equalise for the visitors when he volleyed over from 10 yards with only Warrington to beat. Torquay continued to press and with five minutes remaining were rewarded for their endeavour.A long throw from Chris Robertson was not dealt with, and when it bounced inside the six yard box substitute Benyon was on hand to tap in. Marc Joseph saw a header from a Stephen Brogan corner fly over the crossbar with three minutes remaining, and a frustrating evening was capped off when Roberts was dismissed after a late challenge to earn a second yellow card.

Ronnie frustrated after Millers pegged back Ronnie Moore couldn’t hide frustration after his Rotherham United side conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Torquay at Don Valley Stadium. The Millers lead for the vast majority of the game thanks to a Danny Harrison strike but were pegged back in the dying minutes by an Elliot Benyon equaliser. “We went too deep in the second half and gave away too many silly free kicks,” said Ronnie after the game. “Their goal was the only time during the night that we didn’t deal with the first ball. We have got to learn that we cannot drop as deep as we do in the second half. We wanted to put the ball in behind their back four but unfortunately in the second half we didn’t do that. In the first half we got some decent crosses into the box and we really should have put the game to bed.” The Millers lost Gavin Gunning to head injury in the first half and then also had Gary Roberts sent off for a second bookable offence in the closing stages. Roberts will miss Monday’s game against Shrewsbury but Ronnie is hopeful over Gunning: “Gavin has got a split head; he was very dizzy and sick so we are going to have to wait to see what happens with him,” he said. “He has had a couple of stitches but we are hopeful that he will be fine for Monday. I thought the sending off was a bit harsh to say the least because he made a genuine effort to get there first, he was only half a yard off the ball and on another day he gets there first and we are away. He has also hurt his shoulder as well so he is off for an x-ray now so there could be some bad news on that injury.”

Mixed Fortunes for Steelers After Four Games in Five Days On Wednesday night the Steelers squeaked a win over their rivals for fifth place, the Edinburgh Capitals, in a close 3-2 win. The Scots opened the scoring, with a powerplay goal from Owen Fussey at 9:12, before Doug Sheppard pulled one back for the Steelers at 26:45, and Jeff Legue added another powerplay goal, putting the Steelers in the lead at 35:54. It was Legue who scored first in the third period too, with just 14 seconds on the clock. A late push saw Mark Garside score the Capitals’ second goal at 49:46, but they couldn’t manage another despite pulling netminder Cody Rudkowsky in the final two minutes. On Friday night the Steelers faced the Belfast Giants at the Odyssey Arena, and it looked as if they were about to record a much-needed win as they sat 4-1 up with just over 10 minutes to go. The game opened with a fight as Steelers’ Mike Sgroi and Belfast’s Sean McMorrow went toe-to-toe and dropped the gloves, each taking 5 minute penalties for fighting. The Steelers scored first, with Captain Jonathan Phillips finding the back of the net at 7:01, and Jonathan Zion doubled their lead at 12:01. Craig Peacock ended the scoring for the first period at 14:34, with a powerplay goal. At 26:49 Doug Sheppard restored the visitors’ 2-goal lead, and Joey Talbot added their fourth in the final minute of the second period, sending the Steelers into the third period 4-1 up. The score remained 4-1 until 49:21 when Michael Jacobsen scored for the Giants, closely followed

by a goal from Tim Cook less than three minutes later. Evan Cheverie levelled the scores at 56:57, and with just 10 seconds left on the clock added his second goal of the night, winning the game for the Giants much to the travelling Sheffield fans’ dismay. The first game of the weekend saw the second leg of the Steelers v Belfast double-header, and it was a high scoring first period as Steelers’ Jeff Legue, Joey Talbot and Scott Basiuk, and Belfast’s Pat Bateman, Evan Cheverie and Jeff Szwez left the teams tied at 3-3 going into the second. The second period saw the visitors take the lead, but not before the teams’ two heavyweights had faced off for their second fight in 24 hours, which saw McMorrow tie Sgroi up pulling his shirt over his head and holding it closed. Their third fight soon followed, with both communicating between their respective penalty boxes for the duration of their time in the box. Joey Talbot put the Steelers ahead in the 24th minute, but Tim Cook quickly levelled for the Giants. The Steelers suffered a blow as young Brit Robert Farmer was ejected from the game for a 2+5+Game penalty after a scuffle saw his shirt pulled completely over his head. Pat Bateman put the visitors ahead for the first time with 6 seconds left in the second period. In the third period it was Legue once again who found the back of the net for the Steelers, but Colin Shields scored the game-winner for the Giants with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game. In the last of their four games in

five days, the Steelers travelled to Hull to take on the Stingrays. The Steelers opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Hubbauer, but it wasn’t to last and Adam Knight scored for the Stingrays at 15:20. The scores remained 1-1 through the second period, with both sides trying and failing to score. Konstantin Kalmikov put the home side ahead at 43:11, and it was almost 10 minutes before Robert Farmer fired one home for the Steelers to take the game into overtime. The five minutes of sudden-death overtime remained scoreless, and the game went to penalties, with Kalmikov firing home the winner. The Steelers are back at home at the Sheffield Arena on Friday February 26th against the Newcastle Vipers, and again on February 28th against the Hull Stingrays. Fans are invited to bring a soft toy in a plastic bag and, when the Steelers score their first goal, throw the toys onto the ice. There will also be an auction of bears made by the Steelers’ team, kindly donated by Build-a-Bear Meadowhall and kitted out with teddy-sized shirts by Rhino Sports. All soft toys collected will go to Amy’s House respite nursery in Handsworth, and money from the auction will be split between Amy’s House and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

FRUSTRATED BLADES LOSE OUT AT FOREST The Blades were unable to penetrate Nottingham Forest’s impressive home record on a frustrating night at the City Ground. Robert Earnshaw’s early goal was all that separated the teams, although United played the majority of the second-half with just ten men. United’s proud record of not having a player sent off this season was ruined at the start of the second-half when Darius Henderson was shown a straight red card. Boss Blackwell had the luxury of naming an unchanged matchday squad for the visit to third placed Forest. The Blades manager had concerns about the fitness over a number of players, but his selection indicated he would continue with a 4-4-2 formation. Forest counterpart Davies was vilified for leaving out Blackstock and Earnshaw in their last game and recalled the strike duo. United again made a slow start and had hardly got out of their own half when the home side took the lead after just four minutes. A Majewski corner was flicked on at the near post and fell perfectly for EARNSHAW to poke the ball home from a yard out. After a poor start and the shock of conceding so early United gradually came into the game and a marauding run from Yeates yielded United’s first chance of the contest but his left footed drive on the angle went well wide. Majewski was the first name in referee Miller’s book, for a challenge on Montgomery, before Blackstock scuffed a good chance from a corner although Geary was off the field receiving treatment. A good move ending in Anderson firing over from the edge of the box firmly put the

Blades on the back foot, with Morgan, Gunter and Cohen all prominent in the build-up. At the other end Kallio and the industrious Yeates combined on the left, but the Finn was unable to find an on rushing Blades shirt with his centre. Moments later a Nosworthy centre almost deceived everyone only for Camp to claw the ball away with an outstretched left hand, when it seemed set to nestle in the far corner. Quinn replaced the injured Geary, who had early received treatment. Ward slotted into an unfamiliar right-back role, with Quinn filling in on the left. On the stroke of half-time Blackstock freed Cohen and his cross looked destined to land at the feet of Anderson only for makeshift defender Ward to intervene. Neither manager made any changes at the break, with Ward continuing at right-back for the Blades, but disaster struck just 40 seconds into the second period. Linesman Fletcher flagged vigorously despite the ball being at the other end of the pitch and referee Miller took little time to brandish a red card at Henderson, before then, strangely, consulting with his assistant. The home side attacking the Trent End quickly tried to make their numerical advantage count, but after Bartley and Ward had slowed down Earnshaw, Bunn was quickly off his line to deny the goalscorer a second. With the game reaching boiling point Williamson and Yeates added to the card count, both yellows, before the latter fired just wide from the edge of the box with Kallio, Quinn, Montgomery and Camara all combining nicely to create the opportunity. The Blades replaced Camara with Cresswell as they looked to get a bit more height up

front and Yeates was quick to test Camp with a 25 yard drive which the keeper saved diving away to his right. Two excellent saves from Bunn in the space of four minutes kept the Blades in the game. Firstly he parried away a curling effort from Cohen, with Anderson unable to tuck away the rebound. Then he was at full stretch to tip over a rasping shot from Tyson, who had been freed by Earnshaw. Blackwell’s last throw of the dice saw Evans join Cresswell in attack, with Williamson the man sacrificed. Despite being a man down, most of the late attacking came from the Blades and a nervy moment in the Forest penalty area saw Camp spill a Yeates corner. Five stoppage time minutes gave United renewed hope and with Camp looking troubled Cresswell just failed to get on the end of Ward’s deep cross. However, with Forest stacking their defensive line, United had very few chances, although Perch had to be alert to halt Quinn’s late burst. To compound the Blades misery Cresswell picked up a late booking for a foul on Gunter Forest: Camp, Perch, Morgan, Wilson, Anderson (Tyson 74), Earnshaw (McGoldrick 80), Cohen, Gunter, McKenna, Blackstock, Majewski (Moussi 88). Posh A VIEW highs and FROM THE lows TERRACE The postponement of Saturday’s fixture at Peterborough United might have a sliver lining for the Blades who were left frustrated by the late announcement of a pitch inspection and subsequent call-off. Kevin Blackwell and his squad had finished their preparations and were getting ready to depart for the stadium when the bad news filtered through: “We felt a bit let down because we were in the hotel almost ready to set-off when we heard that there was a doubt - if it was unplayable at noon it must have been unplayable long before that. “It is disappointing that many supporters got all the way down - there was snow on one side of the pitch in the shadow of the stand and on the other where the sun had melted the ice it was virtually standing in water. “Although I understand from Peterborough’s point of view that they were probably desperate to get the game on, surely our fans had to be considered - it was hardly ten minutes down the road for them.” On the positive side, if the game had gone ahead Blackwell may well have been forced to field players who were not fully fit, but now he can plan for the visit of Plymouth on Saturday with real hope that the situation will have improved: “Marcel Seip, still recovering form a hamstring injury, would have had to play at right-back and Chris Morgan had had an injection for his rib to play but they needed time before playing - and extra week now means that ‘Morgs’ will definitely be fit, whilst Seip can’t play against Plymouth anyway because he is on loan from them. “Kyle Bartley was estimated to be between ten and fourteen days away when he picked up a knock so his availability at the weekend will still be touch and go - it depends how quickly he recovers.” Meanwhile, Derek Geary, who was injured at Nottingham Forest last Tuesday, will have an MRI scan on his still swollen ankle on Monday.

When Saturday comes It would be too easy to ramble on about the poor management of Saturday’s postponement, which saw around 2,500 make a premature return from Peterborough. While disappointing for the traveling fans, the pragmatist will recognise that the extra seven days could be crucial in allowing some of our walking wounded to edge further to fitness. So in the absence of a Sheffield United fixture this past weekend, I wanted to touch on something a little out of left field. While reading a Blades forum recently I came across a contributor asking his fellow fans for their thoughts on a burning issue he had. The decision in question was whether he should move to Australia for a year to work and how this would inevitably impact on his previously unwavering support for the Blades. And it got me thinking, what would my decision be? Is it complete madness to even consider that supporting a football club could affect decisionmaking on an issue as important as this? The bottom line is that whether crazy or not, it would effect my thinking considerably. For those who follow football properly, it’s not just about watching the odd game. It is like a fever that is central to life and in many ways defines who you are. While in isolation this may sound extremely sad, I do sometimes wonder what I would do without football. But what I am sure of is that there will one day be a time when circumstances dictate that I can’t follow football to the extent I do now. I am actually visiting Sydney for a month in July, and while I have no immediate plan to up sticks, you never say never. If I was to attempt a logical answer to the forum contributor’s dilemma, I would say grasp the opportunity with both hands, sound in the knowledge that the Blades will be right here waiting when/if you come back, steadfastly plying their trade in the second tier of English football. So after a Saturday with no football, I invite you to think how you could cope with every Saturday being like that.
